Young Critics Workshop 2017

It is the fourth edition of Young Critics Workshop in Belgium, and the third time we help Photogénie (Cinea) celebrate the talent of the five YCW participants as well as the quiet charm of Film Fest Gent. This year's highlights: CALL ME BY YOUR NAME (2017), Nick Pinkerton's know-how, and sitting together around the campfire of cinephilia.

We are truly elated by the opportunity to renew our partnership with Photogénie's Young Critics Workshop and Film Fest Gent, thus offering you a collection of fifteen film reviews and five videos from this year's, third edition of the workshop! And even if you have had a chance to meet the five lucky participants through their online cinephile profiles before the event, you would be amazed to see them at the end of the festival, a little bit tired but very enlightened, not without the contribution of their mentor Nick Pinkerton...

FFGENT: RAMS

Twee rammen, een wedstrijd en een broedertwist. Meer heeft regisseur-scenarist Grimur Hákonarson niet nodig als brandstof voor ‘Hrútar’, zijn laatste beestige langspeler die op gang komt als een Diesel-motor maar steeds meer gaat ronken van levendigheid.

IJsland, een afgelegen, schilderachtige boerenvallei. We worden ontvangen op het gedeeld landgoed van Gimmi en Kiddi, twee oude knarren die ondanks hun bloedband al veertig jaar geen woord meer hebben uitgewisseld, tenzij via opgerolde papiervellen in de bek van Kiddi's keffer. Allebei de broers zijn vrouw- en kinderloos, en storten al hun zorgen op hun schapen van zeldzaam geslacht. Zelf voorzien van een wollige baard en een heftig temperament, brengen ze hun dagen door in de stal en op de wei.

Op de dag van de wedstrijd wint Kiddi's zwarte ram van Gimmi's Garpur, die een halve centimeter rugspier tekort komt. Zegeviering voor Kiddi, tot Gimmi stiekem ontdekt dat de zwarte ram van zijn broer besmet is met 'scrapie', een ziekte die de doodsklokken doet luiden voor al het levend wol in de vallei. Enter de miserie.

Het minimalisme van Hákonarson trekt zich door in alle aspecten van de film: karige dialogen, donker kleurgebruik, subtiele karakterisering, soigneuze camerabeweging. De trage, tragikomische strijd tussen de broers verraadt hoezeer ze nog om elkaar geven. Rams is The Straight Story gekruid met een onvolprezen geestigheid die herinnert aan Force Majeure, of het laconieke filmuniversum van Roy Andersson. 'Un certain regard', kooi.

FFGENT: The Lobster

The Lobster is nog maar twee shots ver, of ik hoor mijzelf al luidop ginnegappen. Als dat geen krachttoer is. Het gaat zo: een vrouw banjert uit haar bolide en knalt meedogenloos een grazende ezel af langs de weg. Dat zien we gebeuren doorheen de beregende voorruit waarover tevergeefs twee wissers zwiepen. De titel verschijnt, ik schuifel in mijn zitje. Wat ben ik gulzig naar die kreeft!

Het universum van The Lobster steekt even krankzinnig als simpel in elkaar. Al wie alleen komt te staan in de liefde wordt stante pede naar een hotel gestuurd om binnen de maand een nieuwe partner te vinden. Gebeurt dat niet, dan verandert de ongelukkige single in een dier – naar eigen keuze weliswaar. Onder dit Orwelliaans regime (allesbehalve futuristisch, net heerlijk oubollig vormgegeven) gaat David gebukt, die pas na drie oogknipperingen herkenbaar is als een ietwat bolwangige, koddig bebrilde Colin Farrell. Een tweede schaterlach ontsnapt.

Davids vastberaden transformatiekeuze gaat uit naar een kreeft: het diertje is met zijn blauw bloed aristocratisch, en blijft gedurende zijn hele, honderdjarige leven vruchtbaar. Of David daadwerkelijk zijn vel zal inruilen voor een pantser laat ik in het midden, maar de deadline haalt hij natuurlijk niet. En dan begint alle ellende, of net niet?

The Lobster is een dolle les in de liefde zoals je ze nergens vinden kan. Eindelijk wordt de datingdictatuur van dit Tinderiaanse tijdperk te kakken gezet, eindelijk worden kinderen (letterlijk) uit hun heilige onschuld geschopt, en eindelijk mag de liefde weer onbeschaamd blind zijn 

Mijnheer Yorgos, bedankt voor deze introductie tot de Greek Weird Wave. Voor zij die nog niet ingewijd zijn, kan ik de gekke Griek misschien ’t best zo omschrijven: Wes Anderson meets Roy Andersson meets de Coen-brothers. 

Staande ovatie!
