2024 Game of the Year Countdown #8: Fire Emblem: The Sacred Stones Nintendo GameBoy Advance, 2004

After playing the first Fire Emblem game on the Nintendo Switch Online service last year, I set off to play some of the older FE games, having only arrived on the scene with the 3DS. Sacred Stones has been called easier by some fans, but I still find plenty challenging, especially when it comes to managing resources. I swear, I was overloaded with iron weapons by the end!

I really like the idea of twin siblings for the protagonists. It creates an easy reason to want to seek out one if they get split up, and it was nice to see a main lord NOT have blue or red hair. 

Much like Marcus in Fire Emblem, I was immediately endeared to Seth because the man is, quite simply, a weapon of mass destruction. I was dropping him into incredibly perilous situations, and he was one-shotting almost everyone. And with crappy weapons, too. Can’t get enough of this sort of thing! Being able to rely on a unit is crucial to me, since I am not exactly a mastermind in SRPGs.

Speaking of being able to rely on units, I stumbled upon Myrrh. 

I have been a huge fan of manaketes since the very first time I played any Fire Emblem game, and Myrrh is horrifyingly powerful. In a late-game stage, the castle is being besieged by enemies. So, I dropped her into a hallway and she just devastated everyone. It sucked up a ton of uses of her dragon stone, but it got her to level 20 pretty quickly. 

The story is a bit more interesting when compared to the other GBA titles, Blazing Blade and Binding Blade, and I especially like the inclusion of the monsters/ghouls instead of just a constant stream of soldiers and brigands. There also seem to be a lot of dragon/wyvern monsters in this game, which I also find more interesting than just simple soldiers.

Overall, it’s tough to say that Sacred Stones offers a significantly different experience from the other GBA Fire Emblem games, but I do think it’s the best of the set.
