Niles is a big tease when it comes to affection. You want to cuddle? You better beg for it.

He secretly wants it too, but he'd rather hear you ask for it. He'll wear a smug smirk on his face and pretend he wasn't listening to you.

If you decide to give up and leave, expect to be grabbed and pulled into his arms.

Niles will pretend to be annoyed but will enjoy the feeling of having you in his arms. He would hold you as close as possible and cherish the time spent with you.

Cuddling positions would vary depending on how he feels, but his favorite position is with your head on his chest and your limbs tangled together in every way possible.

Another position he enjoys is with his head on your chest. He can listen to your heartbeat and know you are safe in his arms.

Cuddling before sleeping is one of Niles's favorite things to do because you are the last thing he sees before he falls asleep

Will never admit that he loves cuddling and will not verbally ask for them either. Expect a back hug with a kiss on your cheek while slowly walking you to the nearest couch or bed.

Will love it if you played with his hair. He is often stressed and worried and finds the gesture very soothing.

Cuddles with Niles would be soft and sweet, where Niles can finally let down his guard and relax.

Saizo:

o  Starting out, a relationship with Saizo would actually not be that hard to get into- once he realizes his own feelings for Corrin.

o   He would spend months denying his romantic intentions to himself, but once he connects the dots, he sees no use in delaying his confession.

o   That is, unless Corrin confesses to him first. In this case, he would be so embarrassed and may ask Corrin what made his feelings so plain.

o   Saizo’s schedule usually consists of him returning home late because of his responsibilities involving surveillance and his Lord Ryoma. So, he doesn’t normally get a lot of cuddle time with Corrin unless she stays up for him (a fact which both of them dislike) but occasionally, he gets lucky.

o   His love languages are primarily acts of service and gift-giving- so he always makes sure to bring Corrin is cared for. If he happens to go somewhere interesting, he always brings her back something from wherever he goes (even if it’s just a flower).

o   He loves to surprise Corrin with his presence, if possible, just to see her face light up at his presence.

o   When returning home, Saizo may be a bit on edge for the first hour or so, as if he is settling back into his domestic husband role. This is not to say that he needs to be alone for the hour, just that his responses may be short, and he may be incredibly responsive to what’s happening around him.  

o   As for the actual cuddling, once he settles, he loves showing Corrin how safe he feels with her- even if he isn’t aware of it himself.

o   Generally, he loves to hold Corrin in his arms rather than being held himself. If Corrin insisted, he would let her, but he would feel rather silly for quite a while (he loves it- he’s just not used to being cared for).

o   He just loves to show her how important she is to him- because she truly is the light of his life.

o   His favorite positions to cuddle in are those that allow him to look at his partner because he doesn’t want to forget any detail of her lovely face

o   He’ll cuddle for as long as Corrin wants, but he can’t sleep unless he’s on his back. In the past, he’s even stayed up all night long cuddling Corrin because she fell asleep while they were cuddled up on their side.

Shura:

o   At the beginning of his time there, Shura was very shy. He didn’t feel as if he belonged to this group and especially didn’t feel as if he deserved the kindness of living after the sins he committed.

o   When Corrin confessed her love to him, he almost tried to talk her out of it- he was too old, too evil, too manipulative, too much emotional baggage- there was no way he would let her be corrupted by something as evil as himself.

o   Corrin was very adamant, however, to become someone that he could trust and stayed by his side. Because of this, he became attached to her and allowed himself to be her companion.

o   After a long day, Shura loves nothing more to cuddle Corrin.

o   I imagine that his love language is physical touch, more so than anything else.

o   Whether this means that he tries to sneak in a touch of hands when handing something to Corrin or enveloping Corrin in a soft, comforting hug as soon as the two are alone.

o   His favorite cuddle position is spooning. Because of his size, he always offers to be big spoon. In reality, he would have it no other way. He loves to hold her close to him, and sometimes (whether Corrin is awake or not), he brushes her hair to the side of her and plants sweet, gentle kisses to the back of her neck or her shoulder (anywhere he can reach really).

o   In these moments, he also finds it easier to admire her- whispering sweet nothings that he would get too embarrassed to say to her face.

o   Sometimes, just every once in a while, when he’s 100% sure Corrin is asleep, he practices the words he wants to say to propose to her- the ways he wants to pledge his life to caring for her and being by her side.

Niles:

o   A relationship with Niles is quite the handful.

o   Being with Niles means dealing with not only Niles, the mischievous soul, but also Niles, the broken and distrustful.

o   The cuddling at the beginning of their relationship was kind of rough. Niles believed that Corrin wanted the side of him that she’d been used to- the one who teases her so plainly, so he put on a show.

o   Due to this, he oversexualized himself to Corrin. His cuddles could usually be seen as an invitation rather than purely cuddling. He would usually tease her with his words and his actions, touching her and encouraging her to touch him in return.

o   It wasn’t necessarily that he didn’t want to do this, he just believed that this is what Corrin wanted- and he believed that it was all he had to offer her anyway.

o   When she began to reject his advances, he began to get incredibly confused. At that point, he no longer understood their relationship.

o   Niles has never really needed to communicate before, so he was initially very bad at it. This lack of communication led to many fights or arguments, which started the rough period of their relationship.

o   However, If Corrin is patient with him in his learning to communicate (because he will certainly TRY, he’s just not very good at getting his point across), he will slowly start to truly trust her.

o   It would take a long time for Niles to get to the point where he could talk freely to Corrin, and even longer to communicate what he wants. He always thought that if he showed her who he really was, that she would leave him for someone better, someone less broken, and a part of him, the part that feeds on his abandonment issues, kind of hoped that she did. After plenty of conversations and reassurance, that part of him slowly began to lose its power and he began to hope.

o   After he realized that Corrin wanted him, not his mask he showed to the world, he realized just how precious she was to him.

o   Niles still enjoyed teasing his dear Corrin, but it was entirely different.

o   At their home, he started to become more open- this showed through little details such as taking off his eyepatch when the two went to bed.

o   All this to say, Niles loves to entwine his limbs with Corrin’s. Whether this shows through spooning, the honeymoon cuddle, or any other position, he has to have one part of himself touching her- even if its just one leg over her body or holding hands apart from each other.

o   The problem with this, however, is that Niles is a human heater. He is usually very warm, so cuddling with him gets very hot after a while. Through hot nights, Corrin usually has to wiggle away from him but he’s quite pleasant to cuddle with in winter.

o   Unlike the other two, Niles relishes in PDA. He couldn’t care less about who was around to see him cuddle his dear Corrin (which had led to many fun scenarios)

You roll your eyes at his comments, telling him if he’s not careful he’ll get some certain princes all protective and worked up

He chuckles at you, but he’ll cool the flirting when he can tell you mean it

Some people think he’s just a creep and don’t understand why you like him

But he really is much sweeter than he seems

He knows what it’s like to suffer, he understands loneliness well

So it’s no surprise that he’s prone to being a cuddle bug when he catches you feeling upset

You know he’d never let you tell the world about his softer side, but it really is incredible how much he can change in the quickest of moments

Truly, deep down, he doesn’t want anyone else to suffer the way he did

And that applies so much more strongly to someone he loves as much as you

As much as he rolls his eyes about being soft... He can’t deny that he is very soft for you

“Let’s just relax tonight,” he said. “It’ll be fun,” he said. It’s impossible to say that Niles was wrong - his guided tour of the fun parts of town really was enjoyable, for sure, but now that it’s over there’s a deep wave of drowsiness settling over you. You’re about to tell him as much, but then he tugs you over, a peculiar kind of emotion present in his eye. It’s something different and you’re very sure you like it, so you push away the tiredness and continue the night.

The next thing you know, you’re back in your room. The familiar bed and sheets and atmosphere are broken up by a head of white hair, which brings a sleepy smile to your face. “Niles,” you say, and the man in question looks up. “Did I fall asleep?”

He hums a short note of agreement before the usual smirk appears on his face. “I thought you’d have a bit more stamina, we could have gone a few more rounds.”

You blink at him, half due to drowsiness and half from your confusion. “Niles, we practically went through half the city. That sounds pretty impressive to me, and I was the one who did it.”

He laughs. “That you did, that you did.” There’s a short pause as you collect your thoughts, trying to will away the fog of sleep as it continues to try and claim you. Niles yawns and stretches almost dramatically. “Well, I’d better get going,” he turns, ready to leave just like that when you reach out to grab his shirt.

“Sleep with me,” you demand, not even waiting for him to turn around. He laughs again, slow and deep as he removes your hand with his own, cradling it with a weird sort of care.

“As much as I’d like to spend the night with you,” he pauses for effect. You wait. “You need to sleep.”

“And you do too, so let’s sleep together.” You move over, making as much room as you can on the bed. Niles stares, contemplating the idea.

“Well…”

“Please?”

He sighs. “I suppose it wouldn’t hurt.” You smile at him and he chuckles again, like his own drowsiness has made everything a little bit funnier. Carefully, the two of you arrange yourselves on a bed that isn’t really made for two, but precarious squishing makes it work.

Closing your eyes leads to a quiet, for a while. The sound of Nile’s breathing is strangely comforting, making you very aware of him beside you. It’s… nice. Very nice. So nice that you could probably go to sleep right this very second but somehow you can’t. You sigh, the sound coming out as a partial yawn. It’s comfortable, but there’s something...

You open your eyelids, peeking at the Niles who lies just before them. His eye is closed like yours had been and he looks a little more peaceful like this, asleep. Or, maybe, not asleep, since he blinks and suddenly you’re staring at him and him at you. It’s quiet.

“...Can I hold your hand?” you venture, letting the strange thought float into the open. Niles looks at you, very still for a moment, before he laughs for what must be the millionth time.

“I figured you’d be braver than that, but sure,” he replies, and then your hand is warm. “Goodnight,” he says, and you repeat the sentiment as he closes his eye. You follow suit, but it’s hard to not focus on the warmth of your hand, as well as the warmth of your heart that follows it. As you finally drift off, you’re struck by how nice it is. Maybe every day could be like this if he wanted it as much as you did.

Niles is a flirt. Most days you’re not particularly bothered by it—at least, it’s what you tell yourself. Truthfully, in your heart of hearts, it makes you wonder if he even truly felt the same way for you. The pretty words that he speaks with his glib tongue come with such ease that he has no problem showering the other members of the army with his words and sultry grins. 

You thought that, at the very least, they were yours. 

It’s only until you see him leering at Felicia that you gather your courage to take his hand and drag him away with the simple command of, “Give me attention.”

Once the two of you are sufficiently tangled into a heap on the bed in your room, your arms wrapped tightly around his middle and your head buried into his chest, he chooses to speak.

“What’s brought this on, darling?” He asks you, tone light and teasing.

You bury yourself deeper into his chest as you tell him, a little untruthfully, “I’ve missed you.”

He chuckles, low and rumbling. “Is that all?” At your nod, he continues. “I was surprised with how forward you were earlier. I wouldn’t mind if you… commanded me a bit more.”

Where usually you would rise to the challenge, you offer only silence.

“Oh?” He drawls, drawing the word out. “This is about something else, isn’t it?”

You hum in agreement, lifting yourself off of his chest to meet his eye. Hesitantly, you ask, “You love me, don’t you?”

“Of course,” He assents. “I wouldn’t have married you if I didn’t.”

His words give you a bit more courage, and they make you smile, if only a little bit.

“It’s just…” You pause, searching for the words to tell him what’s been on your mind. “You flirt with everyone. A lot.” 

“I admit that I do.”

“You tell them the things you tell me.”

“I mean them more when I’m with you.”

“It doesn’t feel that way sometimes, Niles.” You confess softly, watching his face for some sort of reaction. He returns your gaze as if he was frozen, and you feel the weight of his nonchalance in your heavy heart, tempting you to burrow back into his chest and tell him to forget it.

You almost do, almost giving in to the pull of gravity, until he sighs, a small, defeated kind of sound. “I’m sorry.”

He purses his lips. “I’m new to this… marriage thing. To being yours and yours alone.” His eyes widen, as if recognizing what his words mean, and he’s quick to continue and fill the silence, telling you that “It doesn’t mean that I don’t want to be. You’re one of the best things to happen to someone like me.” 

He lifts a hand from your waist to cup your cheek, “Your love and affection are new to me, too. It makes me feel… something, something I’ve never felt before, something that I used to think made people weak.” He lets out a small chuckle. “Somehow I’ve convinced myself that if I continue to act as normal, I’ll go back to normal as well, because when I’m with you, my heart feels like it’s near bursting, and the ache is unbearable.” He smooths a thumb over the curve of your cheekbone, favoring you with a smile that’s different from the ones he usually gives, and it makes your heart flutter. “Strangely, I don’t mind the pain.” 

Carefully, he guides your head back onto his chest, wrapping his arms tighter around your form and nuzzling his nose into the crown of your head. You feel his lips curl into another smile against your forehead as he purrs, “Especially if it’s from you.”

   it's not the first time you wake up before he does, nor will it be the last.

   "an old habit," he always says, "from sleeping late after being gone all night from my old thieving days." normally, you'd wake him up, seeing as it was time for breakfast, but he looks so peaceful, a word you would never use to talk about niles were he awake. 

   you mark it as him being finally comfortable around you after slowly wearing him down until he was open enough with his feelings to marry you.

   your thoughts are interrupted by him burying himself further into your neck, his hot breath tickling your neck. you let out a quiet laugh, now this is something niles would do when he's awake, some things never change. 

   you entwine your hands into his white hair, it still mussed up from last night's events. he stirs, groaning before pulling you into his arms.

   "niles!" you whisper harshly, "we should get up soon, i have to meet with xander this morning!"

   "screw 'im," he mumbles, cradling your head against his chest. you roll your eyes, pulling out of his grip and sitting up, the coldness of your room suddenly hitting you. your sheer nightgown offers little protection, so you reach to pick up your armor, discarded hastily on the floor. 

   "five more minutes?" you hear him ask, wrapping his fingers around your wrist. "i'll make it worth your while." you huff, a light blush tinting your cheeks. despite every ounce of nohrian in you telling you to stick to your duty and get dressed, the bit of your husband that's rubbed off on you wins, and you slide back in bed.

Headcanon: Niles Having an Adventurous/Clumsy S/O Would Be Like...

Request: What would it be like if Niles/Leo had an s/o who was rlly rambunctious, skateboarded down a hill and then proceeded to fall off and bleed from all over? I can see this turning out real comical (。-∀-) thank you xoxo Requested by @running-from-tender-salami Tag List: @kuntasage-11

- Him liking to join you on your adventures, both to keep you safe and to spend time with you

- Him teasing you almost the whole time

- But secretly loving the alone time with you

- He is not one to back down from a challenge, so if you challenge him he would definitely join you in your “crazy” adventure

- Neither of you would ever forget the time when you challenged him to ride in a horse drawn cart down a large hill and shoot at targets

- Halfway down the hill, the cart hit a rock and tipped over

- Luckily neither Niles or the horses were injured in the crash

- The cart was completely destroyed though

- Nobody back at camp was really pleased with that news

Graceless Heart Fic (Spoiler) Notes

These are notes for my 80K Fire Emblem fic “Graceless Heart.” These notes are full of SPOILERS! Please read the fic first! Beware at your own risk!

SPOILERS SPOILERS SPOILERS BELOW:

GENERAL NOTES:

Sumeragi was at work while Corrin was saying goodbye to the Hoshido family. He already said goodbye to Corrin that morning. That’s why he doesn’t appear here.

Xander texting Inigo back a heart emoji: I don’t see Xander as an emoji person, but I think Inigo is definitely the type to use a lot of hearts and whatnot when texting. Xander would not do that on his own, but if you look at his phone, you’ll see his most used (and only) emojis are the heart ones that Inigo sends him. Because Xander is willing to mimic how Inigo shows his affection for the sake of mutual reciprocation. Plus he got made fun of for being so stiff and formal when he writes.

Dock Fight with the Trio: Owain is genuinely embarrassed and Inigo really is going to tease him with those memes, but they’re all friends. This is not a serious fight. Severa and Inigo are not being deliberate assholes here. They’re all having fun.

The book Leo is reading when Owain asks is The Gift of Fear by Gavin de Becker.

Everyone’s swimsuits are based on what they wear in FE Heroes as summer units or their outfits in the Beach Brawl DLC, minus Corrin, who wears a swim t-shirt on top of whatever bathing suit you imagine for them.

In a real situation where someone is drowning, you should probably not grab them the way Corrin grabs Inigo. A drowning person is very likely to harm or hinder their rescuer due to panic. I just wrote that scene a little less realistically in the fic because I didn’t want to deal with that and, like I say in the notes, I’m functioning on action movie logic. Action movies aren’t realistic.

When Corrin tells Inigo that they’ll keep his almost drowning a secret so long as he lets them know if he has health problems later and Elise tells Inigo to let them know if he has bad dreams, what Elise is actually saying is “Hey, if you start to get PTSD over this, let us know so we can help you.” But she doesn’t want to be so blunt, making this be the type of thing Inigo keeps to himself and suffers through alone, so she says “bad dreams” instead to phrase it with less stigma.

You’ll notice after Inigo’s near drowning that I mention how exhausted he feels when he’s having a freakout on the floor of his cabin, how tired he is the next morning before, during, and after the shopping trip, how he leans heavily on stuff and people, etc. His fatigue can be explained by stress and other normal things. However, it is also a result of the lake water being genuinely bad for people! Most people who go to the lake naturally get this vibe and don’t swim too far out into it/tend to visit the lake in groups or pairs so the chances of drowning decrease. (I almost wrote some of this into Anankos’s dialogue but it felt wonky and didn’t fit.). Corrin also feels this same exhaustion in subsequent scenes, although it’s emphasized less.

Likewise, when Owain and Corrin are stranded in the middle of the water, they also grow quite exhausted rather quickly because (a) the closer to the center of the lake, the more powerful the Bad Vibes that drain your energy and (b) there’s so much rain and water everywhere that as they swallow, they’re also growing more and more tired. Also, fear takes a lot out of a person in general.

Similarly, when Corrin’s foot gets grabbed on the docks, I mention a few times that their legs feel heavy, etc. This is all related to Evil Lake Energy. Severa’s almost drowning is the same deal as Inigo. Everyone who gets in the water (especially if they swallow any) experience this same lack of energy. It’s worse if you actually swallow some water right out there in the middle of the lake and you’re just more susceptible to that kind of bad magic like Anankos unfortunately was. Corrin has been through the wringer at the end of this fic because of constant exposure. They’re on nothing but bedrest for a good number of days after the end of this fic. Lots and lots of sleep for them. Owain is only mildly better in that he doesn’t have to be admitted to the hospital but does need A Lot of sleep. Rest assured that they do eventually recover though.

Elise “lying to Xander and Camilla about stuff all the time” — A reference to in-game canon about how Elise regularly ditches her retainers and goes around to the poorer parts of the city where she is explicitly forbidden to go. She’s surprisingly sneaky and has no problems not telling her siblings about this.

I paraphrased some dialogue from in-game between Leo, Niles and Owain when the latter are trying to convince Leo to swim because it mimicked a Beach Brawl DLC scene.

“Pot, kettle” = a reference to Niles canonically reminiscing about the past in his and Leo’s support. He likely does that in this AU on occasion as well.

Camilla’s SUV has 3 rows of seats because she loves the extra room for bags/extra passenger space.

Some of Camilla and Xander’s interactions and some of Xander’s narration referencing her is also a direct reference to their Supports in Fates also. In this fic, Camilla’s jab at being surprised Xander would ever notice how she felt about Severa because he’s always so busy is more a jab to get him to back off than a pride thing like in canon, but the pride is probably still there too.

Severa lives! She lived because I wanted her too (and because I cannot stand any character death in fics that isn’t like “The Villain Died Forever Ago And Maybe There’s Danger But Everyone Else Is Fine”), but it is a sort of miracle. Camilla did not do proper drowning rescue procedure here. Nobody did. I’m sure you picked up on that from the panic and flashbacks and whatnot. Everyone did their best at handling that rescue, but it wasn’t great. There is too much Panic™ to remain calm, although in real life that’s absolutely what you should try to do in an emergency. Camilla’s one (1) exchange of air is not usually going to save the life of somebody who is really in danger. The only reason it worked is because (a) Severa wasn’t really dead, although she sure looked like it and (b) this is fantasy fiction. Please call emergency services in a situation like this irl or immediately drive to the nearest hospital if there is no cell service and it’s safe to do so.

Xander’s last conversation with Inigo in this fic directly stem from his fear of (a) not being in control and (b) not being strong enough to protect those he cares about.

Originally Elise was going to be the one who figured out Anankos drowned, but somehow while writing it just didn’t work that way, mostly because she ended up stuck by the cars. Whoops. You’re the real hero in my heart, Elise.

 CHARACTER NOTES:

Owain’s insecurities stem from his Felicia and Severa supports where Owain reacts very negatively to being called weird. Also from the hc that growing up in modern AU with public school would probably emphasize that insecurity too, since kids can be real bullies. I very much picture him as the “Weird Kid” in class who was in his own little world and other kids whispered about him for it. Which is unfair, because he’s really just having fun :( By middle school/high school, he’s likely learned to tone this down a little, but only after a series of Bad Memories that make him develop a fear that everyone is just barely tolerating him or is making fun of him behind his back. It’s an infrequent insecurity because Owain is pretty good at not really caring what others think, but it’s one that exists all the same. He’s known Niles and Leo for a year or maybe two at this point, but when Leo admits (like in canon) to hating Owain when they first met, it triggers those insecurities again and sets back the progress the three of them had made in working up to a relationship together.

Corrin has a peacemaker type personality in Fates and always wants to believe the best in everyone to the point where they only seem to learn their lesson of “trust but have a backup plan” near the end of the Revelations route. I think I was mostly true to that character of Corrin in my other horror fic Dark Things Grew. And I think I was mostly true to that version of canon here until the part where Corrin and Owain are stuck in the middle of the lake together. (If you think Corrin was 100% what you expected all the way through, yay! But if not: ) Perhaps Corrin is a little more freaked out or snappier than some of you might have expected. However, I am taking some liberties with the fact this is a modern world AU here. In Fates, magic is real. Dragons are real. Ogre monsters that you can summon out of thin air to do your fighting for you (i.e. Faceless) are real. Some things are less likely than others, but there’s a whole realm of magical possibility that doesn’t exist in our reality. So when you find out that the lake your mom used to visit all the time is possessed (huh????) by a demon (?????) whose voice you are hearing in your head (???????) and also who is not a demon but actually your ghost dad (????????) who is trying to kill you and all your friends you guess (????????) but you’re not really sure what’s going on still except for the fact that oh, Ariana, we’re really in it now, aaaahhhhhhhHHHHH—

Well, you, too, would probably be a little upset. Corrin is the same at their core. They’re just allowed to go “Yo, what the heck” now. (I almost had Corrin say the F word in just their narration once and I couldn’t do it :/) They go through a lot of feelings in the climax of this fic, actually, and I hope they felt at least somewhat reasonable reactions to you, the reader, since the situation Corrin finds themselves in is so unprecedented, stressful, and wack.

Also, this is true for all characters! They’ve been mildly adapted into modern counterparts. This means some experiences that shaped them in Awakening/Fates didn’t happen here or were adapted into modern equivalents. (For example, Inigo is a little less able to run face first into battle than in Awakening/Fates bc he didn’t experience the terror and necessity of having to fight the Risen as a young kid. He still grew up shy and is a (self-admitted in Supports) crybaby who tries to hide those facets of himself, however. Hence why he feels the need to put on a brave face after Bad Things Happen. He still feels like he needs to be a pillar of support for people, although he’s a less steady than his more hardened counterpart. Similar extractions can be applied to other characters throughout this fic.

I often write Severa/Camilla as a very doting, established relationship. A lot of the time the conflict in my stories comes from some outside factor—a dragon, a war, magic, etc. I don’t write a lot of interpersonal conflict, and it’s something I thought I should try my hand at least once. Camilla and Severa’s dynamic here specifically draws from Camilla’s habit of keeping her true feelings close to her chest in her supports. In canon with Selena, she very obviously gives noncommittal answers to Selena’s demands that Camilla praise her for being the best. With Xander, Camilla lies by omission—when he guesses her favorite food wrong, she pretends he’s right for the sake of (presumably) not embarrassing him and proving he doesn’t actually know his siblings better than she does. I’m sure there are other incidents where Camilla hides her true feelings too. I’ve always wondered about these events. Emotionally, Camilla is a very interesting character to me. She has a lot of thoughts and feelings, but she seems to keep a lot of them to herself. I wish that was explored more in-game.

Here, I combined Camilla’s natural tendency to keep her true feelings to herself with her canonical childhood loneliness. She canonically felt bereft of maternal love as a child, and that’s why she tries to shower so much on Corrin. In this fic, Camilla is afraid of opening herself up to love from others. She can dole it out because she doesn’t want to deprive anyone (specifically Corrin, who was isolated a lot via Garon) of that same love, but in turn she never wants to actually be vulnerable with anyone. Family gets special privileges, but even her siblings don’t get to see everything. She has romantic feelings for Severa, but she’s afraid of opening herself up to potential hurt and having that love thrown back in her face later. So Camilla does herself the favor of not allowing herself to be vulnerable in the first place. There’s some part of her that really does want to openly love and be loved by Severa, however. So that’s the yo-yo affect Severa is dealing with throughout this fic.

Camilla knows, factually, that Severa likes her too. But she also has this defense mechanism she’s used her whole life. She wants the best of both worlds; she wants to teeter on the edge of romance/intimacy she and Severa both crave while still keeping Severa at arm’s length so she never actually has to face the danger of being potentially vulnerable with Severa and therefore hurt. Which, you know. Is shitty. (Sometimes the people you love can do shitty things. Sometimes you can do shitty things. I think Camilla’s character is more complex, realistic, and interesting here because of it. I hope you think the same.)

And Camilla keeps it up until she realizes losing Severa is still a very real possibility whether or not she admits her feelings. It’s too late to pretend otherwise. She’s already vulnerable to that hurt she wanted to avoid. The shock of that revelation, the fear of losing Severa, and also McFreaking Water Ghost is enough to get her to admit her feelings and change her behavior. It’s not all peaches and cherries from here on out for them, but it’s a start. They’re taking it slow.

Camilla isn’t a villain here, which I say because I worry some people may think I wrote her to be villainous. Sometimes the people you love have baggage. Severa has it too. So does everyone else in this fic and in your actual real life. That’s natural. Sometimes we do shit things because of that baggage. It happens. Does that mean you get an excuse for your actions? Absolutely not. Apologize. Do better. Camilla is trying. They’ll go from here.

I was trying for a lot more nuanced, complex approach to these two this time around rather than the zero interpersonal problems approach. It was new for me too. I hope it payed off.

I’m not adding this to that earlier post, because the reblog chain is getting long, but it has to be said.

I think perhaps my biggest issue with self-insert pairings, in FE or in any other medium, is that they are fundamentally egotistical. They’re great for feeling like you’re in the story, like you’re doing all these amazing things and falling in love with the fictional character of your choice - but how do you share that experience with anyone else? FE Avatars are always going to be in an awkward place in fanwork, and in fanfic especially where an author who’s including them any more than in passing is going to have give them some character likely beyond what they display in canon. The totally silent and personality-free Byleth has it worst of all; this game has been out for months and I’m still thrown off whenever they so much as speak in fics, because it’s just not something they do in canon and I’ve never cared enough to imagine them ever doing so. Avatars in fanwork are barely more than a step above self-insert OCs, and just like those characters can be infamous for they can be very difficult for the reader/viewer to engage with unless they happen to share the specific concept of the character and/or the wish fulfillment they generate as the author or artist.

And when it comes to the subject of the kinds of same-sex representation that are the most impactful for fandom, I do think that’s a serious problem. Personal engagement with a piece of media can only develop a fandom so much; fanwork is what creates a sense of community and gives longevity to a work. Using Fates as an example and AO3 as a metric (not a perfect one, but a good starting place), Leo/Takumi has more than twice the number of fics as m!Corrin/Niles and is the most popular pairing for that game, M/M or otherwise. In five years or so when the fandom at large has moved onto FE17 or 18 it would not surprise me in the slightest if the M/M pairings with the most lasting legacies for Three Houses were Sylvix and perhaps Ferdibert, with Byleth’s canon gay pairings passing into comparative obscurity. (Now, as regards queer representation more broadly I think Edeleth will have more staying power, but it’s got something no other Byleth pairing can claim - direct story relevance and scenes dedicated to developing it as an explicitly romantic relationship outside of supports.) Avatars might be popular for the individual experience they offer, but even people who can get deeply invested in them have trouble doing so with other fans’ similarly invested concepts of the character and their relationships. With the Lions pairings, Ferdibert, and so on one can establish the parameters of these relationships based on who these characters are and what their arcs are like and how they fit into the broader scope of the story and the world they inhabit, and that’s something people in the fandom who support those ships can agree upon and explore together with that foundation in mind. With Avatar pairings half of all that is the individual player’s projection, and the other half is an expression of how the chosen character would act in response to that projection.

I’m keeping this sfw because this is some dangerous shit

Loki and Niles are very imposing alone. As a couple? Good Lord.

They are probably the most feared couple out of any other in camp.

They’ve made a game out of seeing who has more bark by going back and forth teasing each other. It’s a draw every time.

Should they gang up on someone and tease them? That person will probably pass out from embarrassment.

On the battlefield they are a force to be reckoned with. You can see the fire in their eyes when they get put on the front lines.

Leo is the only one who isn’t afraid of them, just because he’s known Niles for so long and trusts him not to do anything that would make him look bad.
