Professional Engineers, Engineering Licenses, and Electrical/Electronic Engineers
youtube
I recommend you watch the video first to help you understand what I’m about to discuss. Also, bear in mind that this post is really just meant for discussion and to shed light on a topic that I feel strongly about.
So, I, at some point, want to become a professional engineer. What does this mean? Well, firstly, I live in the United States, which means the steps to become a licensed professional engineer are as follows:
1. Complete a engineering degree at an accredited 4-year university
2. Register for and pass the Fundamentals of Engineering Exam (FE) for the respective engineering degree
3. Work for the required number of years under a licensed professional engineer or gain some other equivalent work experience
4. Register for and pass the Professional Engineering Exam (PE)
As an electrical engineer, there may be a couple of reasons to become licensed, the big one being if you are working closely with civil engineers on large public projects. While there is likely a nice paycheck and, of course, an amount of prestige in becoming a professional engineer, the purpose of the professional engineering license is for accountability. If you as the professional engineer on a project signs off on plans for the electrical systems of a building even though those plans have proven faulty in past projects and the building later catches fire, you are the one who will “bite the bullet” as they say.
This will be important later in the discussion, but let’s go back to the steps towards acquiring a license.
Looking at those steps and comparing those steps to other disciplines that require licenses, you can see that it is a pretty rigorous process. And rightfully so, I might add. People’s lives are at stake in engineering as much as say in medicine. Every bridge that has collapsed, building that has caught fire, and airplane that has crashed has costed people their lives. Engineers who designed these structures and vehicles lost their jobs, lost the ability to every practice engineering again, and most certainly had to have serve some sort of sentence. Engineering licenses are hard to acquire for a reason, and the amount of legality involved is, I believe, certainly justifiable.
Now, assuming you watched the video, let’s discuss that as well. I don’t pretend to know the entire situation with the new professional engineering laws in Victoria, but from the video, it sounds like it is a step in the right direction. I was pretty surprised to learn early on in the EEVblog series that Australia as a whole did not have any laws like this up until now, and I was wondering when it was going to happen. I don’t mean any malice in saying that, I understand engineering culture and laws are very different there compared to the ‘States.
I found myself both agreeing and disagreeing with Dave. The reason why I disagree with him should be obvious, but I do agree that the law should be more specific and in detail lay out the who and why. Electrical engineers should most certainly have a license if they are to be working on building projects and such, but electronics engineers seem to be in this weird gray area. Personally I could think of a few reasons why an electronics engineer would need a license, but again, the difference in law and culture between the U.S. and Australia means that those reasons may not be fully applicable to engineers in Australia.
For reference, electrical engineering is a broad term for the fields related to electricity. This includes everything from power down to computers and micro-controllers. Electronics engineering is a subset in electrical engineering primarily focused on the small-scale aspect, usually in PCB design, VLSI (interesting topic for another post), and semiconductor devices.
I think a lot of Dave’s argument is in this definition as well as in the legal definition of “professional”, which he mentions in his video. But to reiterate my point and Dave’s, the law is too broad which is obviously causing some confusion. You can apply common sense to it, of course, but, just like with electronics engineers, there may be a gray area that will need to be ironed out. “Who needs to get an engineering license and why?” The “why” seems to be mostly there, but the “who” might need some reworking. Dave also talks about other states moving to pass similar laws, and my hope is that they do so but only after Victoria gets a good grasp on this one. Set an example for those who follow.
It will be interesting to see how this plays out for the rest of Australia and to see if this has any impact on the wider engineering community. If you are an engineer from Australia and you happen to read this post, please add to the discussion. I’m very interested to get other viewpoints on this and updates on how this new law progresses and its effects on engineers working there.

Common Mistakes to Avoid in the Fundamentals of Electrical Engineering
Preparing for the Fundamentals of Electrical Engineering (FE Electrical and Computer exam) can be a daunting task for both recent graduates and seasoned professionals. Whether you are trying to enhance your skills or are working toward certification, the process requires careful planning, structured learning, and a clear understanding of key concepts. However, many candidates make common mistakes during their preparation that can hinder their progress. By being aware of these errors and taking steps to avoid them, you can improve your chances of passing the Fundamentals of Engineering Electrical exam with confidence.
Neglecting the Importance of a Structured Study Plan
One of the most common mistakes that students make when preparing for the FE exam is not having a structured study plan. The Fundamentals of Electrical Engineering involves a wide array of topics, and without a well-organized schedule, it’s easy to get overwhelmed. With our Fundamentals of Engineering Electrical preparation course, you can take advantage of a clear, structured approach that divides the material into manageable sections, allowing you to focus on one area at a time. Our course is designed based on the latest NCEES® FE Computer-based Testing specifications, which ensures you are studying exactly what’s required for success.
Relying Solely on Textbooks
While textbooks are essential, relying solely on them can be limiting. Many students fail to realize that practical application and problem-solving are key aspects of the Fundamentals of Electrical Engineering exam. Instead of just reading through the theoretical concepts, you should focus on applying your knowledge through exercises and quizzes. The FE Electrical and Computer exam tests not just your theoretical knowledge but also your ability to solve problems efficiently under time constraints. Our course offers over 150+ lectures and quizzes that allow you to actively engage with the material and test your skills.
Not Practicing Time Management
Time management is critical when it comes to the Fundamentals of Engineering Electrical exam. Many candidates make the mistake of not practicing time management, either by spending too much time on a single question or failing to finish the entire exam. It's essential to practice solving problems within a set time frame. By taking timed quizzes and mock exams, you can gauge your ability to complete the exam on time and manage your pacing effectively. With our on-demand preparation, you’ll have the flexibility to learn at your own pace while ensuring you can perform under time pressure.
Underestimating the Importance of Reviewing Mistakes
Many students make the mistake of moving on to new material without thoroughly reviewing their mistakes. Understanding where you went wrong is crucial in improving your problem-solving skills. Our Fundamentals of Electrical Engineering course provides detailed theoretical explanations and example solutions that help you understand why certain answers are correct or incorrect. By reviewing your mistakes and focusing on areas of weakness, you can improve your understanding and increase your chances of passing the FE Electrical and Computer exam.
Skipping Over Certain Topics
The Fundamentals of Engineering Electrical exam covers a broad range of topics, and it can be tempting to skip sections that seem less relevant or difficult. Discussing some critical topics and aspects you can’t afford to skip is necessary to ensure a rich understanding of lighting and Energy Efficiency in the PE Power exam.
Light sources
light sources are categorized based on levels of lighting, showcasing different energy efficiencies. The table below shows a categorization of key light sources based on their level of energy efficiency:Light SourceEnergy EfficiencyLifespanColor Rendering Index (CRI)Environmental Impact Incandescent Low Short Low High Halogen Low to Moderate Moderate High Moderate Fluorescent Moderate to High Moderate to Long Moderate to High Moderate to High Compact Fluorescent Lamp (CFL) Moderate to High Moderate to Long Moderate to High Moderate to High Light Emitting Diode (LED) High Long High Low
The table showcasing levels of lighting reveals that incandescent and halogen bulbs have lower energy efficiency, shorter lifespans, and lower color rendering capabilities. They also have a higher environmental impact due to higher energy consumption and carbon emissions.
Fluorescent bulbs and compact fluorescent lamps (CFLs) offer moderate to high energy efficiency, longer lifespans, and color rendering capabilities. They have a moderate to high environmental impact, mainly due to mercury in their composition.
LEDs emerge as the most energy-efficient light source with the most extended lifespan, high color rendering capabilities, and a lower environmental impact. LEDs consume significantly less energy, have a longer operational life, and contain fewer hazardous materials, making them the preferred choice for energy-efficient lighting in power engineering applications.
Understanding these differences in energy efficiency among light sources is crucial for power engineers to make informed decisions when designing lighting systems, promoting energy conservation, and contributing to more sustainable power infrastructure.
Lighting Calculations in Power Engineering
Lighting calculations are critical in lighting and energy efficiency in the PE Power exam power engineering to ensure efficient and effective illumination in various applications.
These calculations help determine the appropriate lighting levels, amount of lighting (produced or required), bulb or light placements, and energy requirements. Some key aspects of lighting calculations include:
Luminous Flux (Φ)
Luminous flux measures the total amount of visible light emitted by a light source, expressed in lumens (lm). It indicates the overall brightness of the light source, disregarding the direction of light distribution.
Illuminance (E)
Illuminance is the amount of lighting falling on a surface area, measured in lux (lx). It represents the light intensity or brightness perceived by the human eye. Illuminance depends on the luminous flux emitted by the light source and the area over which the light is spread.
Lighting Level (L)
Lighting level quantifies the amount of lighting required for a specific task or environment and is measured in lux (lx). It determines the adequacy of lighting in a given space and depends on factors such as the activity performed, visual comfort, and safety requirements.
Reflection and Absorption
Lighting calculations consider the reflection and absorption characteristics of surfaces in a space. Different materials have varying reflective properties, affecting the amount of light reflected in the environment.
Therefore, it is the new norm in modern houses to use white or light themes, paint, and curtains to improve the reflection of artificial and day lightening in the room or hall.
Let’s consider an example to illustrate lighting calculations.
Suppose we want to determine the required illuminance for an office space of 500 square meters based on a 200 – 500 lux lighting level recommendation. We will use energy-efficient LED bulbs with a total luminous flux of 100,000 lumens. (For an idea, a single 9W LED has 800 Lumens replacing 60W bulb or 15W CFL)

Everything You Should Know About the EIT Certification Exam
Engineer-in-Training (EIT) or Engineering Intern (EI) is a professional designation given by the National Council of Examiners for Engineering and Surveying (NCEES) to a person who has passed the NCEES Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) Examination. In this blog, we answer some of the frequently asked questions on the EIT certification exam.
What is the EIT Certification exam?
The EIT certification exam, also known as the FE exam, is the first of the two exams engineers must pass to get their Professional Engineering (PE) license in the United States. Upon passing the FE exam, engineers can apply to the respective state boards for an EIT certificate. The state boards will review the application and grant them an official designation as an Engineer-in-Training.
What is the EIT Certification exam pattern?
The FE exam is 6 hours long and consists of 110 MCQs. This exam is offered year-round in seven different disciplines, and they are as follows:
FE Chemical
FE Civil
FE Electrical and Computer
FE Environmental
FE Industrial and Systems
FE Mechanical
FE Other Disciplines
Is the EIT Exam a computer-based test?
Since 2014, the NCEES has offered all the EIT/FE disciplines in computer-based testing (CBT) format rather than pencil-and-paper format. It has resulted in the following changes:
The EIT certification exam will no longer be a pencil-and-paper exam.
Exam registration is open year-round.
The number of questions dropped down from 180 to 110.
The removal of the common breadth section of the test.
Who can take the EIT exam?
Recent graduates and students in their senior year of an EAC/ABET-accredited undergraduate engineering degree program can appear for the FE/EIT exam.
Why should I take the EIT exam?
To secure a Professional Engineering (PE) license, you must pass the FE exam. Becoming a PE has a lot of advantages, so passing the FE/EIT exam early in your career is essential to become a successful engineer.
How to register for the exam?
You can register online via the NCEES website. Login to your MyNCEES account, choose the 'Register' option and follow the instructions on the screen. An exam fee of $175 is payable directly to the NCEES.
When is the FE exam offered?
The NCEES offers the FE exam year-round in four 2-month testing windows:
January-February
April-May
July-August
October-November
Can I retake the FE/EIT exam?
You can take the exam once during each testing window and up to a maximum of 3 times per 12-month span. However, the policy may vary from state to state, so check your state board's regulations to avoid confusion.
What is the ideal time to take the FE/EIT exam?
Taking the exam soon after graduation or in the final year of your undergrad program is a wise decision because the basic concepts will be fresh in your memory, and it can boost your chances of passing the exam. If more than 4-5 have passed since your graduation, the FE exam can be notoriously hard to pass.
How long should I study?
Starting your prep early, at least 4-6 months before the examination date, gives you a better shot at passing the exam. Spend 1-2 hours on the weekdays and half a day on weekends, and do not miss out on any topics in the syllabus.
Does the EIT certification guarantee job opportunities?
Having an EIT adds value to your resume, and some companies prefer candidates with an EIT over others. However, passing the FE exam does not guarantee job opportunities.
However, more government and private firms are interested in hiring licensed engineers down the line. So, having an EIT certification is essential for earning the PE license.
Hope we have answered some of your burning questions regarding the FE/EIT exam.
