Professional Engineers, Engineering Licenses, and Electrical/Electronic Engineers
youtube
I recommend you watch the video first to help you understand what I’m about to discuss.  Also, bear in mind that this post is really just meant for discussion and to shed light on a topic that I feel strongly about.
So, I, at some point, want to become a professional engineer.  What does this mean? Well, firstly, I live in the United States, which means the steps to become a licensed professional engineer are as follows:
1. Complete a engineering degree at an accredited 4-year university
2. Register for and pass the Fundamentals of Engineering Exam (FE) for the respective engineering degree
3. Work for the required number of years under a licensed professional engineer or gain some other equivalent work experience
4. Register for and pass the Professional Engineering Exam (PE)
As an electrical engineer, there may be a couple of reasons to become licensed, the big one being if you are working closely with civil engineers on large public projects.  While there is likely a nice paycheck and, of course, an amount of prestige in becoming a professional engineer, the purpose of the professional engineering license is for accountability.  If you as the professional engineer on a project signs off on plans for the electrical systems of a building even though those plans have proven faulty in past projects and the building later catches fire, you are the one who will “bite the bullet” as they say.
This will be important later in the discussion, but let’s go back to the steps towards acquiring a license.
Looking at those steps and comparing those steps to other disciplines that require licenses, you can see that it is a pretty rigorous process.  And rightfully so, I might add.  People’s lives are at stake in engineering as much as say in medicine.  Every bridge that has collapsed, building that has caught fire, and airplane that has crashed has costed people their lives.  Engineers who designed these structures and vehicles lost their jobs, lost the ability to every practice engineering again, and most certainly had to have serve some sort of sentence.  Engineering licenses are hard to acquire for a reason, and the amount of legality involved is, I believe, certainly justifiable.
Now, assuming you watched the video, let’s discuss that as well.  I don’t pretend to know the entire situation with the new professional engineering laws in Victoria, but from the video, it sounds like it is a step in the right direction.  I was pretty surprised to learn early on in the EEVblog series that Australia as a whole did not have any laws like this up until now, and I was wondering when it was going to happen.  I don’t mean any malice in saying that, I understand engineering culture and laws are very different there compared to the ‘States.
I found myself both agreeing and disagreeing with Dave.  The reason why I disagree with him should be obvious, but I do agree that the law should be more specific and in detail lay out the who and why.  Electrical engineers should most certainly have a license if they are to be working on building projects and such, but electronics engineers seem to be in this weird gray area.  Personally I could think of a few reasons why an electronics engineer would need a license, but again, the difference in law and culture between the U.S. and Australia means that those reasons may not be fully applicable to engineers in Australia.
For reference, electrical engineering is a broad term for the fields related to electricity.  This includes everything from power down to computers and micro-controllers.  Electronics engineering is a subset in electrical engineering primarily focused on the small-scale aspect, usually in PCB design, VLSI (interesting topic for another post), and semiconductor devices.
I think a lot of Dave’s argument is in this definition as well as in the legal definition of “professional”, which he mentions in his video.  But to reiterate my point and Dave’s, the law is too broad which is obviously causing some confusion.  You can apply common sense to it, of course, but, just like with electronics engineers, there may be a gray area that will need to be ironed out.  “Who needs to get an engineering license and why?”  The “why” seems to be mostly there, but the “who” might need some reworking.  Dave also talks about other states moving to pass similar laws, and my hope is that they do so but only after Victoria gets a good grasp on this one.  Set an example for those who follow.
It will be interesting to see how this plays out for the rest of Australia and to see if this has any impact on the wider engineering community.  If you are an engineer from Australia and you happen to read this post, please add to the discussion.  I’m very interested to get other viewpoints on this and updates on how this new law progresses and its effects on engineers working there.

What Are the Challenges in Studying for the FE Electrical and Computer Exam?
The FE Electrical and Computer exam is a challenging step toward obtaining your PE licensure. During your preparation journey, you may encounter several obstacles. Recognizing these challenges and addressing them effectively can significantly improve your chances of success. This blog discusses some common difficulties you may face and offers tips to help you overcome them.
Extensive Syllabus
The FE Electrical and Computer Exam covers a wide range of topics, and the amount of material can be overwhelming, especially if you haven't developed a solid study plan. To prevent this, it's important to review the syllabus and break down the chapters into manageable sections to create an effective study schedule.
Consider registering for the School of PE's review classes. These classes offer a personalized study plan tailored to your individual study level, ensuring you learn effectively.
Time Management
Not allocating enough time for studying can pose a significant challenge that affects your overall preparation. When developing a study plan, it's essential to assign specific time slots for each concept to enhance your learning efficiency. Spend less time on easier topics and adjust your schedule based on the requirements of each subject specific to the exam. Consider using online study planner tools to help you stay organized and prepare effectively.
Limited Study Materials
Having the right study materials is essential for exam success. Studying the FE Electrical and Computer subjects can be challenging without quality resources. It's important to seek out online materials and invest in those that align with NCEES specifications. Gather review guides, study notes, practice exams, and practice problems to enhance your understanding. Consider registering with the School of PE to access high-quality study materials and prepare effectively for your exam.
Not Utilizing the FE Reference Handbook
The FE Reference Handbook is the only resource you will have during the exam. Many candidates struggle to navigate it and are often not familiar with the essential information that can help them succeed. To prevent this, download the handbook from the NCEES website and use it throughout your preparation. By doing this, you will become familiar with its layout, which will allow you to find formulas and tables more quickly during the exam.
Lack of Practice
The exam requires theoretical knowledge and the ability to apply concepts to problem-solving. Lack of sufficient practice can hinder your ability to tackle exam questions efficiently. To improve your skills, work through a variety of practice problems and take mock exams to develop your testing strategy and timing. These practice sessions will help you grasp the concepts more effectively, so you will be well-prepared to excel in the exam.
Stress and Anxiety
Exam pressure can lead to stress and anxiety, negatively impacting your focus and confidence. If you are taking an exam for the first time, you may experience this pressure. However, managing it can help you concentrate better on your studies and achieve success. Practice meditation or engage in warm-up activities to reduce stress and improve your concentration. Regular exercise and a healthy diet can also enhance mental clarity. Building confidence through consistent preparation is the most effective way to lower exam-related anxiety.
Conclusion
The FE Electrical and Computer Exam is certainly challenging, but with the right preparation strategies, you can overcome these obstacles and succeed. This article will help you tackle common challenges to ensure your preparation is effective. At the School of PE, we offer preparatory courses designed to streamline your studies and help you avoid common pitfalls.

Which One Is Better: Electrical Engineering or Computer Engineering? - Arya College Jaipur
Computer engineering vs Electrical Engineering is closely related. In high school and college, you will likely take many of the same courses to prepare yourself for these careers also you’ll need certain skills to succeed as an engineer, no matter what type you choose. Those skills include:
Creative thinking
Problem-solving
Analytical thinking
Communication skills
Work well within a team
Detail oriented
Strong skills in math and science
What Is Electrical Engineering?
Electrical engineering (EE) is the study and creation of systems, components, and machines that use or produce electricity, also the field of electrical engineering offers a broad array of research, design, and development. Examples:- They are improving electricity-fueled vehicles and their automotive parts, including engines, brakes, and sensors, to advance the efficiency and safety of self-driving cars In the renewable energy field, also electrical engineers are researching and designing new wind turbine technology for cost-effective energy production and creating microgrids to make energy storage and distribution more efficient during natural disasters. Electrical engineering is vitally important in numerous industries also therefore electrical engineers have their pick of focus areas regarding job opportunities and skill development. These focus areas include:
Electronics
Computer engineering
Control systems
Power and energy engineering
Robotics
Radio frequency engineering
Signal processing
Telecommunication engineering
What Is Computer Engineering?
Computer engineering (CE) encompasses the research, testing, design, and development of computer systems and components, also this field of engineering combines the use of electrical systems and components (hardware) with the development of programs and applications (software) and computer engineering is a blend of electrical engineering and computer science.
Professional computer engineers are leading innovative initiatives that can reshape the way humans interact with each other and technology, also some examples of computer engineers exploring the use of materials other than the standard silicon to create computing technology that is smaller yet more powerful and efficient than its predecessors and The results of these efforts could improve processing and data storage in practically every application also CEs in the automotive and transportation industries are working to improve automated driving systems and set the standards that ensure these vehicles operate as safely as possible.
Three major specializations for CE professionals:
Every hardware engineering focuses on creating, assembling, and testing physical computer components.
Every Software engineering/development involves designing, programming, and maintaining computer systems and software applications.
Encompasses designing, maintaining, and building networks and systems of multiple computers, machines, and devices done by the Network Engineer.
Electrical Engineering Vs. Computer Engineering: Education And Licensure Requirements
Most entry-level electrical and computer engineering jobs require a bachelor’s degree in ECE, EE, or CE, also some employers only consider applicants who have also passed the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam in electrical and computer engineering and If you have at least four years of professional experience in electrical and computer engineering, employers may require you to take the Professional Engineer. Some Specialities:
Computer engineering.
Electronics, controls, and communications.
Power
If you want to apply for a leadership position with additional management responsibilities and/or specialized duties then the advanced training of a master’s program can give you an advantage over other applicants and some examples of specialized electrical engineering roles (like a radio frequency engineer) or leadership positions (such as senior electrical engineer) may list a master’s degree in electrical engineering as a requirement for hire also Careers in academics or research engineering will likely require a doctorate in either EE or CE.
