If you don't want the hassle of finding this stuff out or talking to people to ask for these features, you do you I guess. But don't ever pay money for one of these apps, no matter what it does. It is festive season in South Asia, and women are some of the most overworked among all social groups.

Suddenly, it is not just you, your partner/parents/siblings anymore - it is the entire extended clan, khandaan, their nosy relatives even with several degrees of separation.

The bulk of festive burden falls on women. From the cooking, an extensive menu that comprises unhealthy food which will not be fully consumed because everyone is diabetic or dieting, and the heartbroken woman has to finish what she painstakingly prepared or watch it go to the trash, to endless decor needs, shopping and gifting the extended family (a fine art which, god forbid you gift one relative something and another differently, tempers erupt) not to mention your own professional deadlines because your boss wants everything early so he can justify the 3-4-5 fay holidays.

Then comes the dieting because you KNOW you will be judged for your appearance, the clothing choices, the exhaustion of dealing with nasty relatives and the politics.

And if you're queer, in the closet or struggling or even simply wanting to be single or avoid marriage, suddenly your life is everyone's business, and this endless social nightmare, the bullying and the ostracism is the opposite of divine, it is debasing. God forbid if you are part of an inter-caste or inter-faith coupling, the negativity is worse.

Here are a few tips on how you can take care of yourself during this season.

You've gotta put yourself first. You cannot fight multiple battles on multiple fronts if you cannot take care of yourself first. FEED YOURSELF FIRST.

Look in the mirror ' and tell yourself - this festive season I am celebrating ME - I will feed myself first. You cannot fight big battles on an empty tank.

1. Food: eat before everyone else - get in the kitchen, make yourself something healthy in half an hour, cut a salad, a bunch of fruits and eat first. Cut up a few veggies at night, put it in a tiffin box and leave it in the fridge. When everyone is snoozing, have that. They will balance out all the junk that will go into your stomach. Don't start any ridiculous fast that will drain you. Get a doctor's note if you are being pressured and say - sorry maa ji. Health reasons I have to be careful.

2. Get a pre-festival health checkup. Go to the doctor and get your stats checked. Some labs offer full-body general health checkups at discounted rates. Grab a package and finish it. When you know where you are struggling, yiu can avoid making it worse.

3. Protect your money. Festive seasons have a pile of insidious stupid expenses that pile up and guess who pays ? The woman, the wife, the daughter in law. Do you think your Husband or inlaws will shell money out for that cute decor and diya set? No way. If you hold them accountable, they will probably give some money for all the gifts relatives give. Remove your credit cards and debit cards from online shopping sites. Pretend something is wrong with your card and it got blocked. Make your husband or In-laws pay instead.

So get realistic, set up a budget and empty your bank account into an FD. Congratulations, you only have a SMALL amount of money left for decorations - use that to get inventive and clever. Pull out old newspapers, and get into wealth-from-waste mode.

If you are even smarter, you will quietly set up an alternative savings account WITHOUT a debit card or credit card and squirrel away your Dussehra - Diwali bonus into it. If your husband asks, "Sorry yar, iss bar company mein bonus nahi de rahe hain, kaafi projects mein behind hue and they arent doing that well"

If you are still living with your parents make it a point to save every money gift you get. Take the cash, hide it safely and don't touch it. First opportunity - put it in the bank account (your own, not a shared one)

4. Secure your Jewelry. A pot of desi women are given gold and precipus jewelry during their marriage but this is often sneakily taken away by your mother in law in order to "safeguard it". It is usually in the bank or a locker you do not have access to.

So, this festive season, go FULL on TRADITIONAL. Wear that old saree, and ask mom in law for your jewelry because your extended family etc are mentioning seeing those pieces from your wedding, because they got sentimental. And then sneakily after the festivities, hide them in your own little locker (which you bought beforehand) and quietly head to the bank, and deposit it in a safe deposit box in YOUR name.

Remember, GOLD is one of the most secure available financial assets for a desi woman. But the gold you have is often controlled by your in-laws once you marry over. So make sure you take iy back bit by bit. And when they ask - make excuses like - the clasp is broken, need repairs, mom wants to upgrade it a little etc. And never give it back to your inlaws. Your gold is YOUR legal property. It should not go to your inlaws.

5. Mentally prepare for tough conversations.

Festive seasons are hard on women and they socially slaughter your dignity. Prepare snarky, sarcastic answers or don't hesitate to shut down what comes your way. But since many of you are raised to be docile, remember to anticipate all the tough topics someone will raise to criticize you, think of their personaliry and prepare some snarky answers beforehand. If a relative is asking abiut your marriage, ask them when their son is going to move out or if they're still a financial burden. Ask if their husbands have stopped ogling the maid. Don't be scared of going offensive. These guys are not your friends and won't hesitate to pull you down.

6. Prepare Me time. Make a set of activities, like groceries etc, that that can leave you alone and give you breathing space from the khandaan. Take longer to shop alone and take a break in the neighbourhood park. Use this time to meditate, check in with yourself and your goals and give youraelf a spiritual pat kn the back.

7. Prep an easy menu and donate the remaining. Plan a food menu that is not extensive. Order delicacies if possible, instead of Doing it Yourself. There is no BEST BAHU and BEST WIFE contest to win. Get the load of cooking off your back. If there is food leftover, call an orphanage and send it to them. Do not eat excessively out of guilt. Donate it to those who need it. When the burden of cooking is reduced the guilt of forced eating goes doen and you won't be putting junk in your body.

Remember - you are your own best friend. Festivals will take a lot out of you. They will cause families to get into unnecessary pissing contests and you have to bear the laborous brunt. So safeguard your time and energy.

“The Demon King… rather egotistical if you ask me…” the Deity mutters, examining his fingernails from the man's throne, his legs hanging lazily over one of the armrests as he shoots a side eye to the door, the Former Gerudo standing in the archway, staring in disbelief at the seemingly glowing figure in the otherwise dark room.

“Who do you think you are sitting on my throne?” He growls, summoning his katana as he glares at the god, slowly stalking forward as gloom swirls around the room, oozing from the dark stone as the Deity sighs, dropping his head back before swinging his legs forward, resting his elbow on the armrest as he leans back, his legs spread wide as he watches the would be King, his eyebrow raised.

“I really am forgotten aren't I? No matter. Kneel.” He says, his voice echoing as Ganondorf falls to his knees, grunting at the sudden weight pressing on his entire body.

“What the- who are you?!”

The god smirks as he stands up, his hair slipping over his shoulder as he walks over, stopping in front of the man, grabbing Ganondorf's jaw as he examines his face, his white eyes narrowing as he looks into the King's.

“Pitty… this could have been fun for me. We'll see where this goes. Personally I don't see it going far.” He says, patting the man's face a few times before walking to the doors.

“I'll be seeing you again, Demon King.” He says, pausing at the doors and snapping his fingers, releasing the man from his grip, Ganondorf falling forward onto his hands as he growls, summoning his long bow and notching an arrow, aiming it at the god before firing.

His eyes widen as the god grabs it, snapping the wood in half as he glares over his shoulder, his eyes burning as he tosses his empty hand in the direction of the King, suddenly a blue and green blade shoots forward in a flash of light, stopping right before it stabbed him in the chest, the tip just scratching the man's torso.

“Try a cheap trick like that again, and you will be regretting it. Godling.”

Just as soon as the sword appeared it had vanished in another flash of light, blinding the Demon King.

He hisses a curse before looking up again, the being having vanished, a small note pinned to the wooden door with the arrow.

Ganondorf's eyes narrow as he walks over, ripping the paper off as he reads the note scrawled out.

first off, i'll assume readers are somewhat familiar with GGACR Anji's gameplan and mechanics. if not, short description: solid but specialized normals, consistent okizeme, Autoguard/Guardpoint on specific normals that either blocks strikes that hit High and Mid (High GP) or strikes that hit Low (Low GP) for a specific, usually single-digit, burst of frames; and belligerent defense and a way of consistently "getting in" that is colloquially considered "toddler-accessible". (mainly through H Fuujin being an advancing, extremely long range 1f invuln pseudoreversal that goes into mixup OR combo followups on hit or block)

that and a little skim of the DL page should get you well prepped for this iteration of our boy! this character makes people explode off of grounded mids and doesn't have a full gameplan yet.

first off, your normal that matters: anji isn't proximityless in this game, and c.S is your button. when FDC'd (an exploit-mechanic exclusive to GGX, where you kara cancel a sweep which you gatling into from another normal into FD to functionally instantly cut said normal's remaining active and recovery frames to zero, leaving you neutral and usually Plus A Lot), this move infinites into itself by doing a couple FDC ones in a row, doing an FDC microdash, and repeating.

yes, this hurts your hands (especially considering the Sweep input in GGX was 2S+H, as the D button didn't exist yet). it also has jab pushback, so even if you can't hit the FDC, doing c.S > c.SxN will crank guard bars while beating mash, jump, and usually recovering fast enough for you to catch their backdash (often with another c.S).

5H has autoguard because, like... whatever, sure. the move property was new. live a little. this does make it a reversal that beats meaties, and notably if you're pressing 4H on wakeup, this is an extremely belligerent, obnoxious, and easy option from throw OS since it will stick people in autoguard-stop until it's active if they're hitting you out of throw range and result in you getting wakeup thrown if not. only really loses to spaced lows and projectiles. good ass guilty gear.

Dust, however, tragically lacks autoguard, leaving 5D autoguard > Kou to not be an option anymore, alas. you do have your 6P, though, which uh-

huh

so, that's your overhead animation, with... randomly generated hurtbox shift frames, and it has high guardpoint at an entirely arbitrary (and mostly entirely useless) window. i guess it's uh... harder to challenge, though you still need RC to do anything with it. quite a move.

aside from that, his 3K is on his 6K, and both the tyrant 6K and 6H have f1 High guardpoint, but this creates an unfortunate lack of any low autoguard in Anji's kit, which is a significant thing to have, and prevents Anji - lacking any Low Crush options in his kit, in this state - from dealing with lows much of anywhere, and especially makes him unable to compete with strong sweeps and low profile moves, which he already has trouble with even in +R, where he's a much more complete character.

but hey, that's just buttons. how's butterfly?

...alright! so, meterless Shitsu is FB shitsu. neat. this lets Anji set up meterless high/low unblockables assuming he gets oki instead of just Raohing them. so that's neat. it is still butterfly, though, so it's not good at zoning, contesting projectiles, or pressure outside of okizeme. so uh... guess he can keep it.

Fuujin's the same, mainly, but you can't go into followups on whiff, and the H version has significantly shorter invuln, which... is a pretty big hurt considering the lack of other tools Fuujin could've compensated for. if nothing else, Anji can still play favorable RPS when the opponent blocks Fuujin, so-

(of note, this move is usually used as an air combo knockdown ender. and it still exists in GGX anji's kit, largely untouched. InvisibleWater describes this move as "Probably one of the worst moves I've seen that isn't some 'Oops, we forgot about our own juggle rules' followup".

it's an overhead that's minus a billion on block, gives a bad knockdown on hit, is slow, and doesn't combo from or into anything unlike the great move that's usually the overhead followup out of fuujin as Rin. FB rin is also missing, notably crippling metered options and options in general as Anji.

but hey, Nagiha's here and... it can't be used as a surrogate combo ender in the place of other missing tools... and uh... oh, there's no H followup, so we also don't have Hop, the usual K followup. so, uh... hm. that's pretty bad. Kou is probably still good, though...

Learning new cat colour genetics. Mocha, Amber, Copper, and Russet.

Basically, I learnt most of the genetics of cats and some rodents from a book called the Colour Inheritance in Small Livestock by Roy Robinson. Printed 2013.

But new genes have since been discovered. This us part 2

Mocha- Bangkok cats

What is it- more pink than mocha. A brown colour

Genetics- new c gene, (cm), recessive/codominant with other sepia

Notes- codominant with burmese and Siamese Bur-mocha is cbcm, Sia-mocha is cscm

Amber- Norwegian forest cats

What is it- normal cats matures into orange like cat if agouti. Non agouti is silver tabby looking but has black nose and paw pads instead of pink/red nose

Only effects black and blue based cats and their patterns. They are genetically this.

Copper/flaxen/akita- British shorthairs

Agent Collins, at eleven years of age, was S.H.I.E.L.D.’s youngest recruit.

Many opposed, as a battlefield was no place for a literal child, but Director Fury insisted. He understood that she was more of a liability to S.H.I.E.L.D. than an asset, but he also knew that the world was better off with her as S.H.I.E.L.D.’s liability than HYDRA’s asset.

Agent Collins was aware of the circumstances of her recruitment. Not because people kept on reminding her, but because she wasn’t granted the luxury to be naive. The world was cruel and unforgiving during her tender years — and she wasn’t foolish enough to think that it changed for the better as she aged.

With her involvement with S.H.I.E.L.D., at least she could pretend that the balance between good and evil was tipping more gray than dark.

She was never the best soldier and, frankly, anyone who believed she would be the perfect agent was — for the lack of a better word — an idiot.

To her credit, no one specifically forbade her to tag along on the mission concerning her former manipulator. So, technically, she wasn’t disobeying any direct order. To S.H.I.E.L.D.’s defense, no one knew she got a wind of the said mission. So, they couldn’t’ve possibly forbidden her in participating, either.

Unfortunately for Agent Collins, since no one technically knew her current whereabouts, that meant she was alone with no backup. If — heavens forbid — everything went south, then she was highly susceptible to being kidnapped without a trace. Again.

"Riptide has found her way back home," Dr. Wilhelm Fischer celebrated with a maniacal laugh. The two HYDRA agents that brought her into the room roughly made her kneel on the floor, close to the doctor. "Did you miss your father, Phantom Riptide?"

Agent Collins’ stealth uniform covered her entire body. In addition to the body-fit suit, she was wearing boots, gloves, and goggles. She was also donning a hood and a mask that fully covered the lower part of her face to complete the ensemble.

Her S.H.I.E.L.D.-designed stealth uniform was specifically customized with her in mind, as they aimed to protect her identity. However, as an indirect consequence, her uniform also concealed her emotions pretty well. In any given day, she couldn’t care less about her expressions being hidden. However, at the moment, she wanted nothing more than letting the doctor see the burning hatred in her eyes.

"You’re not my father," she spat. Since nonverbal cues were difficult to convey with her outfit of choice and her hands cuffed behind, she was left with the only other option.

"Right," Dr. Fischer wasn’t even taken aback. "Because everyone made you believe someone else owned that title. Isn’t that right, Winter Soldier’s daughter?"

Agent Collins froze momentarily, she had forgotten about that nickname. She regained her composure a moment later, her sense of bravery renewed. "I’d rather be known as his daughter than yours."

He feigned offense, "A cruel reminder, really.

"I spent my whole life perfecting HYDRA’s new wave of soldiers and the most viable experiment ended up being credited to another asset."

Agent Collins wanted to go on this mission for two main reasons: first, to ask her former manipulator her questions and second, to kill him with her own weapon.

(Because an assassin would never be above revenge and debts.)

"How many Phantom Riptides did you make?"

"Three hundred." Her heart churned with the knowledge that 300 lives were experimented on. Hers and 299 others. Worst of all, the doctor blurted that number as if it meant nothing — as if he merely said how many beakers he had broken over the years, not how many lives he had ruined for the sake of his project.

"How many survived?" She was finally reminded that she merely crashed someone else’s mission when a new voice joined the conversation.

Agent Collins wasn’t sure if she expected to see anyone when she turned, but she definitely didn’t expect to see the Avengers there. With them being in the premises, that meant only one thing: she just crashed into an Avengers’ mission. Uh-oh.

She was in for an intense earful once S.H.I.E.L.D. hears, for sure.

"One," she heard Dr. Fischer answer. "Her."

Agent Collins waited for this day way before she even regained enough of her right mind.

Once she understood how Phantom Riptide came to be, her fear and grief manifested into a lot of things — including the need for revenge.

"However entertaining stalling you have been," Dr. Wilhelm Fischer started a moment after answering one of the Avengers’ questions, "I’m afraid my ride is almost here."

"Wait," Agent Collins chose that moment to interrupt. She looked up to the HYDRA agents guarding her, "my legs fell asleep. Can you guys help me stand?"

Sensing no harm in her simple request, Dr. Fischer motioned for one of the HYDRA agents to help her up.

Except, unbeknownst to anyone else, that was just a hoax to have one of them be at her arm’s reach.

Agent Collins secured a hold on a knife she had hidden in her boots while the HYDRA doctor was stalling for time. When one of her guards pulled her up, she carefully shifted her hold and blindly planted the knife on him.

Guard 1’s sudden stagger caught everyone’s attention. She used that second to lay the handcuffs down her wrist and force her arms apart, breaking herself free with a loud, satisfying sound.

Wasting no time, she immediately took another knife out and threw it in the air. She pulled out the knife she planted on Guard 1’s abdomen the same second the other knife landed on her free hand.

By the time her audience recovered from their shock, Guard 1 was already lying on the floor — bleeding out from a stab on his abdomen and two slits on his throat.

"Ugh," she couldn’t contain her disgust. She removed her goggles, as they were newly decorated with blood splutters. "I forgot how messy that can be."

"What are you doing?" Dr. Fischer asked, dumbfounded. Despite the circumstance, she could hardly blame him. As far as she could remember, he never actually saw his most viable creation in action before — outside the mandatory trainings, that was.

"Cleaning up," she answered nonchalantly, as if she didn’t just kill a man with an audience. She casually took the gun from Guard 1’s belt. "I don’t like leaving witnesses."

To further prove her point, she threw a knife straight at Guard 2 without looking. She didn’t even turn to confirm if she succeeded in what she aimed to do, like she knew that the knife’s trajectory would only end at where she aimed for.

"The Winter Soldier trained you well." He made no move to alert anyone with eyes on him. He just subtly took a notebook from somewhere behind him, without looking away from her figure.

Rather dramatically, she did a somersault to avoid the bullet from Guard 2’s barrel. As the latter was sporting a newly impaled eye, his aim was unsteady. Which was a stark contrast to hers, despite firing her gun twice whilst in the air.

The bullets hit Guard 2 on his chest, one hitting right in the area where his heart lied.

She landed perfectly on her feet, now back to facing the doctor. "If I ever see him again, I’ll be sure to pass on your compliment."

Even with the two HYDRA agents dead, Dr. Fischer was seemingly unfazed that he was left alone with her and the Avengers. He merely flipped the pages of the notebook on his hands.

Agent Collins observed the cover of the notebook. It was a plain navy blue, with white waves near the top.

Oh.

"Loathe," he began reading. "Young."

She moved closer to the Avengers, not bothering for introductions before conversing with them in a low tone. "You guys are done questioning him, right? Can I kill him now?"

Purely based on his outfit, she assumed Captain America was the one who responded. "We have to take him into custody."

"Archangel."

"Yeah, no. That’s not happening." If anyone could see under her hood, they would see the quick judging look she casted him. "No offense, but he’s literally trying to trigger me right now. He’s not gonna go with you alive."

She quieted down for a moment, just long enough to let them hear Dr. Fischer continue reading off of the notebook. "Four. Deception."

"You have," she paused as she counted in her head, "five words left before Hell breaks loose. Decide quickly."

"Spring."

"Is killing him your mission?" Black Widow asked, eyes obviously trying to read everything she could.

"It’s more for personal revenge; but sure, you can say that."

"Clever."

"Fine, you can kill him." Iron Man eventually gave her permission. "But you’re answering to our superiors when they question why we brought Fischer dead."

Agent Collins fought the urge to say that she’d have to answer to Director Fury either way. She figured it was best that the Avengers didn’t know she was with S.H.I.E.L.D., at least until they were safely away from a HYDRA base.

"Stark. Orphan."

Instead of saying anything to acknowledge the given permission, she murmured a comment to herself. "‘Stark’ isn’t Russian."

Truthfully, she didn’t have her trigger words memorized. She just knew the first word, for the obvious reason of it being the beginning. Somehow, though, she also remembered the last two words Dr. Fischer just uttered. Not because they were near the end, as she couldn’t even recall the very last word, but because they seemed as though they were purposefully listed in that order.

It certainly didn’t help that ‘Stark’ was the only trigger word in English, either.

"Eighth." Dr. Fischer looked up as he closed the notebook. He sported a satisfied smirk when his eyes landed on her unmoving figure. "Experiment 218?"

She made a show of the daggers hidden in her sleeves falling perfectly onto her grasp. "Ready to comply."

"Kill them."

Valentine’s Night

Notes: Set after the events of 4.06 “Valentine’s Day” with spoilers for S3 and 4. “Tacoma FD” doesn’t do romance among its ensemble but the “Raiders” homage in 1.08 got me thinking about these two as a ship. Tagging: @fluffbruary

After a final shower, Lucy had changed into her civilian clothes and was standing in Station 24’s garage, debating what to do tonight when Ike acknowledged her.

“Hey, Lucy, I’m heading out,” he called as he walked past her. She nodded and gave him a wave, watching him climb into his pickup truck before deciding she had to say something.

“Hey, Ike.” She jogged over to his driver’s side door, and he looked down at her, the door held half-open.

“I’m sorry you missed working Valentine’s Day at the club this year.” She knew he needed the tips, having had his savings wiped out. Twice.

“Aw, it’s okay,” he assured her with his usual good humor. “I got to spend the day with you.”

Something about the open, frank manner in which he said this made butterflies appear in Lucy’s stomach.

“Uh, thanks,” she mumbled, instantly feeling like a fool. Seeking to correct her lame reply, she quickly followed up with “You doing anything later?”

A hesitant look crossed his face. “Yeah, I was gonna go out…”

She held up her hands to stop him. “Got it.”

“Oh, no, but you could come with!” he said, the words spilling out in an excited rush.

“You sure?”

“Yeah, yeah.”

With that, he leaned over to his right and opened the passenger door for her from the inside.

She climbed up and they buckled themselves in.

Lucy had been expecting to head to a bar or a club, but Ike drove them out to a skatepark of all places.

He parked in a lot and as Lucy got out, she shot him a look.

“You skate?” she asked, trying to picture him wearing a helmet and pads on a skateboard and biting back a laugh at the image.

“Nah,” he said with a laugh of his own as they ascended the slope of an embankment. “I just like to come up here sometimes.”

They reached the crest of the rise and Lucy couldn’t help a gasp as she stared out at the view before them. The lights from the city twinkled far off in the distance while in front of her, a series of concrete skating ramps were laid out in an alternating pattern from left to right. A few skaters were flying back and forth on three of the ramps. The skateboarder at the top of the ramp closest to them, a boy wearing elbow and knee pads and a blue helmet, paused to adjust his chinstrap and nodded at Ike.

“What’s up, old man?” he said in greeting. “Whoa, you brought a girlfriend?” he added as he noticed Lucy behind Crystal.

“Hey!” she snapped as she marched toward him. “Show some respect, you little asswipe!”

Blue Helmet let out a chuckle and just skated away from her down the ramp.

She huffed, using her annoyance to distract from the fact that she hadn’t corrected the kid’s assumption that she and Ike were dating. Neither did Ike, a small voice inside her said, making her butterflies return.

“Can you believe him?” she asked her fellow firefighter, shaking her head.

“Yeah, no, Kyle’s not that bad. That ‘old man’ thing’s kind of a joke. Besides, he hasn’t met Cap.”

“Or my dad,” she muttered.

“And he’s nothing compared to Hunter.”

Lucy had to agree, and she let the subject drop.

They settled themselves on a strip of grass at the edge of the park, Ike alternating between watching the skaters practice doing tricks on the ramps and looking up at the sky or out at the lights of Tacoma in the distance. Lucy followed suit but she also snuck glances at the handsome man beside her.

As the sun set, the air turned colder, and Lucy’s jean jacket over her black dress didn’t afford her much protection from it. She found herself nestling into Ike for warmth and shelter from the wind as they lounged side-by-side on the grass. He wore a beige workman’s jacket that Lucy had never seen before, and he shrugged out of his left sleeve to share it with her without being asked. She gave a contented sigh when she felt the jacket’s thick flannel lining drape over her shoulders and back, cocooning her in warmth and the scent of Ike’s…soap?

“You’re not wearing cologne?”

“Nah, I’m not working at the club tonight.”

“Well, thanks for sharing your jacket with me,” she said quietly, not wanting to disturb the comfortable atmosphere between them.

“Anytime.”

Now that they were talking again, she let her curiosity take over.

“How did you find this place?”

“Oh, a friend of Kyle’s broke his arm out here one weekend and I drove Granny over. That’s how I met Kyle—he called 911. I come back once in a while when I feel like I need some space.”

“Yeah, it’s got plenty of that,” she agreed as she adjusted the side of his jacket collar that was by her neck.

“Happy Valentine’s Day, Lucy. You get any good stuff this year?”

She turned her head to look back up at him and nodded. “Yeah,” she agreed. “I think I got something really great.” A wide grin broke out across her face as she remembered her conversation with her parents, and she raised her hand for a high five, which Ike happily returned.

“Happy Valentine’s Day, Ike.”

She leaned her head against his shoulder and went back to watching the skateboarders fly by against the backdrop of the darkening sky.

Hi Swolesome,

I enjoy your content on YouTube, and I was wondering if I could ask for some advise.

I'm a writer among other things (another one of those things is also being a fellow bisexual disaster), and I do a lot of writing on this and other sites. But lately I've been thinking about trying my hand at starting my own channel on YouTube.

I don't exactly have high expectations for my future channel in terms of how many people will watch, nor am I anywhere near expecting to acquire much in terms of monetary gain. I don't exactly expect to gain the following the likes that Contrapoints or Philosophy Tube have gained over the years

But I do have ideas to share for video essays topics (original ideas and work with sources cited of course, I've been keeping up with that particular discourse). I guess what I'm trying to say is I could use a little advice as someone who is just starting out. What to do, what to say, HOW to say things? I'm not the best actor, but I think I'm fairly descent in terms of presenting things (I've also been pretty good at writing both fiction AND essays both online and in school).

Also maybe some tips on actually creating videos.

Hey! So glad you reached out, and thank you so much--I'm really happy to hear you enjoy the content I make. :) Also stoked to hear you're looking to start a channel of your own! It sounds like you're coming at it from a very realistic place, because it's kinda thankless work, especially in the early days. Some people know how to game the algorithm, but I am sadly not one of them, so I don't want to lead you astray on that front (FD Signifier would be a good source there, he has some more recent videos talking about content creation with some tips and tricks included.) The advice I can confidently offer is to be yourself. And I know that sounds like cliché right out of an after school special, but I mean it. What do you love? What perspective do you bring to a subject? If you're more of a presenter, you might find yourself connecting with educational content. If you're a writer, you might be drawn to storytelling or poetry. One of the nice things about videos as a medium, if the focus is specifically art and communication, is that they're so flexible. I fell into my style of videos because I genuinely love connecting with people and encouraging honest examination of thoughts, emotions, and how they interact; this is why I never say anything unless I mean it. Even if I later come to change my mind on a subject (which definitely happens), I think it's important to give people the same honesty I'm trying to encourage in them. Every YouTuber has an onscreen persona, of course. We all contain multitudes and it's important to have your self-self and your visible-self, if that makes sense, both for your style to come forward and for your mental health. But the content that will be the most enjoyable and rewarding will be whatever you can bring sincerity to. While there is certainly something to be said for acting as a talent in itself, I personally love creating and viewing YouTube content that gives a glimpse into the person making it. It doesn't have to be baring your soul (not unless that's what you want), but rather something about yourself that you're secure in sharing: an artistic talent, education you've received, your sense of humour--that part is up to you.

And don't get discouraged if there's something you want to talk about that other people have already addressed. This is something I still struggle with, worrying that my voice is just adding clutter, but we need more people sharing their passions and insights. Every perspective brings something new and increases the likelihood of someone else connecting with the subject. Whether you're everyone's cup of tea or someone's shot of whiskey, you're reaching others. Finding your voice is the key to getting started, recognizing its value is the drive to keep going. Oh, and on the tech side, if you had to select only one thing starting out, make sure it's a good mic. For a hearing audience, good audio is often the deciding factor as to whether or not someone will watch. You got this! 💙
