Who is an Eye Care Specialist? Understanding Their Role and Types
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/e3284254616ce903c6ae68837e18c2a1/3fd82e76ea00ddde-41/s540x810/744ed6d2ba37ee734ef6f2a3fcd0439a18d1fc51.jpg)
When it comes to maintaining healthy vision, eye care specialists play a crucial role. These professionals ensure that our eyes remain in optimal condition, addressing everything from routine check-ups to advanced treatments. Eye care in Sri Lanka has seen significant advancements in recent years, with a range of specialists offering services tailored to meet diverse needs.
An eye care specialist is a trained professional who diagnoses, treats, and helps prevent eye-related issues. Their expertise ensures that individuals can enjoy clear vision and maintain eye health throughout their lives. Whether it is a simple prescription for glasses or managing complex conditions, these experts are indispensable.
Eye testing in Sri Lanka is a common first step in identifying vision problems. These tests, often conducted at clinics and hospitals, assess the overall health of your eyes and detect issues like refractive errors, cataracts, or glaucoma. Depending on the results, you may be referred to a specific type of eye care specialist for further assistance.
One of the most commonly encountered professionals in the field is the optician. Opticians in Sri Lanka are responsible for fitting and dispensing corrective lenses, ensuring that prescribed glasses or contact lenses meet your vision requirements. While they do not diagnose or treat eye diseases, their role is vital in helping individuals achieve clear vision.
For more specialised care, optometrists and ophthalmologists step in. Optometrists conduct comprehensive eye examinations, diagnose vision problems, and prescribe corrective lenses. They also manage certain eye conditions, such as dry eye or infections. On the other hand, ophthalmologists are medical doctors who handle more complex issues, including surgeries for cataracts, retinal disorders, and other serious conditions.
The growing popularity of contact lenses in Sri Lanka has further highlighted the importance of proper eye care. Specialists ensure that these lenses are correctly prescribed, fitted, and maintained to prevent discomfort or infections.
In a country where eye care is becoming incrv easingly accessible, it is essential to understand the roles of these specialists. Whether you need a routine check-up, treatment for a condition, or simply new glasses, Sri Lanka offers a range of options to cater to your needs.
Prioritising regular eye testing and seeking professional advice ensures not just clear vision but also the long-term health of your eyes. So, take the first step today—your eyes deserve it!

What An Eye Exam Can Reveal About Your Health
These days eye care in Sri Lanka is not just about getting your vision corrected or checking for eye related issues. An eye exam can reveal a surprising amount about your overall health, not just your vision. Here are some of the health conditions that an eye testing in Sri Lanka can help detect:
Diabetes: Diabetic retinopathy, which involves damage to the blood vessels in the retina, can be detected through an eye exam. This condition is a common complication of diabetes and can lead to vision loss if untreated.
High Blood Pressure (Hypertension): Hypertensive retinopathy occurs when high blood pressure causes damage to the blood vessels in the retina. An eye exam can reveal signs of this condition, such as narrowed blood vessels or bleeding in the back of the eye.
High Cholesterol: The presence of yellowish fatty deposits in the eyes, known as xanthelasma, or changes in the blood vessels of the retina, can indicate high cholesterol levels.
Autoimmune Disorders: Conditions like lupus and multiple sclerosis can cause inflammation in different parts of the eye. Eye exams can detect signs of these disorders through inflammation or optic nerve damage.
Thyroid Disease: Graves' disease, a thyroid disorder, can cause bulging eyes (proptosis) or eye movement issues. An eye exam can detect these symptoms.
Rheumatoid Arthritis: Inflammation of the eyes, such as uveitis or scleritis, can be associated with rheumatoid arthritis. Eye exams can detect these inflammatory conditions.
Cancer: Certain types of cancer, including melanoma, lymphoma, and leukaemia, can manifest signs in the eyes. Tumours in the eye or changes in the pigmentation of the retina might be detected during an eye exam.
Neurological Disorders: Conditions like multiple sclerosis or a brain tumour can cause changes in the optic nerve or affect the muscles that control eye movement. An eye exam might reveal these signs.
Liver Disease: Yellowing of the eyes (jaundice) can indicate liver problems, such as hepatitis or cirrhosis.
Aneurysm: Changes in the optic nerve or unexplained vision loss might suggest the presence of a brain aneurysm, which could be detected during an eye exam.
Cardiovascular Disease: Changes in the retinal blood vessels can be a sign of cardiovascular disease, which can be detected through an eye exam.
Regular eye exams through qualified opticians in Sri Lanka are essential not only for maintaining good vision, but also for detecting potential health issues early on. If you do have vision related issues, an eye test will generally recommend corrective spectacles or contact lenses online in Sri Lanka, that can help correct your vision.

The importance of regular eye exams
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/dfc35ba92d2ab65f454a6e6d2409d451/1dba366eb31d3b35-d6/s540x810/9db97a267d57cf4d1f38abcbe6ecc741174962bb.jpg)
Eye testing in Sri Lanka is a comprehensive assessment of your visual system and eye health. It is performed by eye care professionals who can include:
Optometrists: These professionals are trained in eye care in Sri Lanka, prescribe corrective lenses, and diagnose and treat various eye conditions. They can also provide pre- and post-operative care for eye surgeries.
Ophthalmologists: These are medical doctors specialising in eye and vision care. They can perform eye exams, diagnose and treat eye diseases, prescribe lenses, and perform eye surgeries.
Opticians: While opticians in Sri Lanka do not perform eye exams, they can help fit and dispense corrective lenses based on prescriptions written by optometrists or ophthalmologists.
During an eye exam, the professional will evaluate:
Visual Acuity: Your ability to see clearly at various distances.
Refraction: Your need for corrective lenses to address vision problems like near-sightedness or farsightedness.
Eye Health: Using tools like a slit lamp and a retinal camera to examine the health of your eyes, including the cornea, lens, retina, and optic nerve.
Intraocular Pressure: Checking for signs of glaucoma by measuring the pressure inside your eyes.
Eye Coordination and Movement: Assessing how well your eyes work together and how they move.
Regular eye exams are crucial for several reasons:
Early Detection of Eye Conditions: Eye exams can detect common issues like near-sightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism, as well as more serious conditions like glaucoma, macular degeneration, and diabetic retinopathy. Early detection can prevent or slow down vision loss, and also help to take corrective action by prescribing eyeglasses or contact lenses in Sri Lanka.
Overall Health Insight: Eye exams can also reveal signs of other health conditions such as diabetes, high blood pressure, and even some cancers. The eyes are often the first place where symptoms of these conditions can be observed.
Updating Prescriptions: For those who wear glasses or contact lenses, regular exams ensure that prescriptions are up-to-date, which helps maintain clear vision and avoid eye strain.
Visual Function: Eye exams help assess your visual acuity and how well your eyes work together, which is important for tasks like reading, driving, and using digital devices.
Depending on your age, health, and symptoms, your eye doctor might include additional tests to assess specific aspects of your vision and eye health.

So, you lied to me? - Lando Norris x Tourist! Reader
Plot: Going on a travel year you end up in Monaco, the plan wasn't too fall for the man who helped you to the British Embassy and gave you a place to stay when someone stole everything from you ...

You took a gap year before university and decided to travel you'd started off the New Year on a flight from London, to Qatar to New Zealand. You travelled around New Zealand and Australia for the majority of January, before moving on to Papa New Guinea, Fiji and Samoa.
You then travelled round the South Asian countries, like Indonesia, Singapore, Thailand, Vietnam and the Philippines and Taiwan all throughout February. You then moved onto China, doing both Disney Parks while you were there and sight seeing. You did South Korea and Japan.
Coming into April, you moved onto Sri Lanka and India, and The Middle East, doing Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Bahrian, Qatar, Oman and Saudi Arabia.
Afterwards, now having done 2 continents, you moved onto Africa, you spent the end of April and the majority of May travelling here, before leaving for Europe.
A nice 2 weeks island hopping around Greece, before a week travelling up the boot of Italy.
It was when you drove to Monaco in a rental car that things got difficult.
You were walking along the harbor where all the expensive yachts were docked wishing that one could be yours. You didn't have all your bags on you, the larger ones left behind in the hotel room you'd booked for the night. But you had your important stuff on you, like you passport, your drivers license and all your travel documents.
You were taking a picture on your nice Canon camera of the yachts and the street that had weird red corners rounding it that you put down to being measures to just help drivers slow down round the corners, but they were definitely an eyesore.
Every time nice cars drove by there was whistles and claps that made you look at what car it was, you could never tell what model it was but they looked nice and you guess you could say sporty.
As you were distracted taking your pictures a guy comes up to you with a small, parcel cutting knife in his hand. He slit the straps of what you thought was a really sturdy bag and the weight notifies you to the loss of the bag. You let your camera drop as you turn to see the guy now holding your bag and starting to run away with it.
"Hey! Stop" you shout before running after him.
"Aide, Aide" you shout as you continue to follow him, your minimal French not helping as people scold you for being a bustly tourist.
You aren't really looking where you going and you loose him at a busy intersection of people, you spin round looking at every possible direction he could have gone in.
"Shit!" you whisper to yourself quietly tears coming in your eyes. You spin round a little to quickly, bumping into someone who drops the bag that they were holding.
"Désolé, mon erreur" you try looking at the young gentleman you'd bumped into in a hoodie and jeans. He looks at you with a confused look, a smirk coming onto his face.
"Oh sorry, tu ne parles pas français? Maybe Italian, erm fuck scusa, parli italiano?" you ask with again the bare minimum of Italian you know.
"I speak perfectly good English" he smiles, laughing a little as your expression turns to shock.
"Oh! Oh I'm so stupid. Hello!" you smile looking at the very attractive man in front of you, you blushed a little looking up at him.
"You look panicked what's wrong?" he asks.
"I was tacking pictures of the harbor and some guy took my bag. It has everything in of mine and I don't know what to do" You say to him looking a little more panicked.
"Everything as in money ... because I can help with that" he says placing a hand on your arm.
"I don't care about the money, but he has all of my documents. My passport, my drivers license everything" you cry a little.
"Oh! Erm, I have a friend who was born here, and let me get him and he can help us file a police report. Then mmm the British Embassy is all the way in Paris and you cant get a flight so we'll have to drive there..." he starts to rant and your face turned shocked.
"We?" you ask, confused as to how this guy has just inserted himself into your life drama's.
"Oh yeah, I've gotta help you out now. You got that whole damsel in distress thing going on right now! Any way damsel, what's your name?" he jokes and you look over at him offended.
"I am not a damsel in distress! And Y/N" you retort.
"You so are, the tear stains, the wide, helpless eyes, the guppy fish face your pulling right now, the butchered French and Italian to a strange man who actually is British... Y/N" he laughs making you pout and push him a little.
"I don't even have a place to stay after 3pm today and I cant check in anywhere without ID" you say rubbing your head, looking around as if the man would randomly pop back up and hand you your bag back before saying how sorry he was.
"You can stay at my place, I have two spare bedrooms" he smiles and you look at him in shock.
"You live here, in Monaco ..." you ask.
"Yeah, I moved here a few years ago, for ...work" he offers, he phones his friend walking off for a few seconds alone before he pulls you along one of the side streets and too a quiet cafe he went to, to keep under wraps.
"Okay, Y/N this is my friend ... er Percy" he says pointing to Charles, so far you hadn't shown any signs of knowing who he is and he didn't want you to catch wind of that.
"Hello Percy, its nice to meet you" you smile and he looks at you with a vacant yet confused expression.
"Oh and whose this you are beautiful" you compliment looking at the girl behind him.
"Y/N this is my girlfriend Alex" Charles indicates to Alex behind him who smiles and pulls you in for a kind hug that you definitely needed. You could hear both of their strong accents as they introduced himself.
"Oh, I never got you name, what's your name?" you ask turning to look at Lando, who freezes for a second.
"Erm, my names Robert, but you can call me Bob" he smiles and you raise and eyebrow at him.
"Hmmm, you don't look like a Robert... or a Bob. Interesting choice" you voice your opinion making everyone awkwardly laugh.
Charles, Lando and Alex took you to the nearest police station in Monaco, Charles translated what they were saying and you answered to which he and Alex would help translate back.
Charles explained that they were escalating it because you are a tourist in need, but you picked up some words that made the sentence not sound like that at all.
You were asked if you had a place to say and Lando explained you'd be staying with him until everything was sorted out.
The Monegasque police got in contact with the Paris British Embassy for you, they explained that the police had sent over you information and if you wanted to hold off on a new passport for a few days to see if it would turn up you were more than welcome, but right now your passport was on lockdown.
And that was how you ended up spending the end of July and all of August with Lando, it was strange really. For a man who had and extremely nice collection of clothes and a very large apartment he didn't go to work often. There was one room you weren't allowed in which is where he often went, you assumed it was a man cave or gaming room where he played with his friends because you heard lots of shouting and aggressive banging.
He'd been so sweet, he took you on dates from going out to dinner, to picnics, to going swimming and lots more. It felt like more than a summer fling. Especially once he asked you to be his girlfriend, which you immediately said yes too.
But he got a lot more twitchy after he had.
Eventually, Lando or Bob as you knew him took you to Paris so you could get your passport. He explained that he travelled a lot for work and he would need to leave soon and you explained that before you bumped into him you'd been on a gap year travelling the world.
"Baby, why don't you come with me?" he asked randomly as you were both lying on the sofa, cuddling while watching a film.
"You wont even tell me what you do for work Baby! And besides I had a schedule that I'm already behind on. A week ago you said you didn't mind going our separate ways for a little bit until Christmas and then you'd come to England with me" you say playing with his curls.
"Okay, I'm going to be honest with you now... my name isn't Bob" he says shyly and you sit up at the speed of light turning to look at him.
"I knew it! So you lied to me?" you exclaim laughing.
"So, what's my boyfriends actual name?" you ask looking him dead in the eyes, he leans up on his elbows before sitting the full way up.
"Lando, I am Lando Norris" he smiles.
"Hmmmm, Lando... Lando. I could get used to that" you smile.
"You aren't mad?" he asks looking over you, brushing you hair back and tucking it behind your ear before kissing your cheek.
"I knew you weren't being completely honest when we first met... but I also knew you had your own reasons" you offer.
"I think its going to be easier if I just hand you my Instagram" he admits with a gulp as he hands you his phone. The first thing you notice is how many followers he had, there was around 10million and he had nearly 2,500 posts.
You look at the friends list, and one peeks your interest. Charles Leclerc, who looked exactly like Percy who Lando had introduced you too.
You then go back and look at his bio, that told you his actual job.
"So, I'm dating a super famous athlete?" you ask looking up at him away from the phone to see his head down in his hands. He turns to the side to sneak a look at your expression, his eyes a little glossy.
"To be specific, a Formula 1 driver" you ask again and he nods.
"You are such a muppet, my god" you laugh before pulling him into a hug.
"How aren't you upset with me?" he ask unsure.
"Well, I agreed to date you, because you are you. I doubt you change into Mr Hyde when you become a what was is Porsche race-car driver? I fell in love with you, not Bob, not Lando, you. So whether that is Bob, who kindly helped a crying lady on the street who just had her passport stolen from her, or Lando a cool and amazing race-car driver. Whoever you are is the person I love" you grin and he pulls you into a hug.
"So you want to join me for the last few races? Or you want to finish this world trip of yours?" he asks.
"Well, looking at your calendar, I can actually meet you at the rest of the races, While travelling. I'll continue to do Europe until you have the Netherlands, and ill go back to Italy, just for you. I'll miss Azerbaijan and Singapore because I did that, but I'll knock out some of South America, I'll meet you for Austin, then we can do Mexico and Brazil together, then we can do Vegas together! And by that point I can call it done with my trip!" you exclaim and he looks like he considers it for a second.
He's shocked, he cant remember the last time a girlfriend tried so hard to link up their schedules like this, and proved that they'd be able to work despite some potential scheduling issues.
"I love you. I fucking love you" he grins pulling you back down onto the sofa kissing all over your face making you giggle.
A/N: I've been doing a lot of Lando recently, I don't know if you can tell but I love writing about him, he's my fav to write about right now.

Crystals It Works Well With: Aquamarine, garnet, pearl
How It is Created: Moonstone is a type of feldspar composed of potassium aluminum silicate. It can be found in a number of colors, but all examples demonstrate a particular sheen known as labradorescence; an effect also found in labradorite and blue moonstone. Labradorescence is a light effect caused by parallel hairlike structures laid down within the crystal matrix, which reflect light back and forth, creating different-colored effects, including blue, yellow, silvery gray, and white.
History: Moonstone is the sacred stone of India. During the earliest traditions, the gem was said to have been embedded in the forehead of Ganesh, the four-handed god of the moon, since the beginning of time. It was written in Hindu mythology that moonstone is made from moonbeams, thus its luster.
The magnificent gem is never displayed outside for sale unless placed on a yellow cloth, as yellow is a sacred color. According to other legends, Moonstone can give gifts of prophecy and clairvoyance to the wearer. It could also clear the mind for the wearer to welcome wisdom. But to unlock this ability, Moonstone must be placed in their mouths during the full moon. Since ancient Egypt it is considered as a spiritual stone as it is seen as the gem of protection for night travelers.
Since Moonstone looks a lot like the moonshine, ancient Romans believed that it was formed from moonlight. If you look at the gem closely, you’ll see a dance of light that lurks on the insides of the gem. Ancient Greeks merged the names of the goddess of love (Aphrodite) and the goddess of the moon (Selene) and christened Moonstone as “Aphroselene”. While the Romans believed that the gem exhibits the image of their moon goddess, Diana.
It is also known as an aphrodisiac and when worn by two people, they will fall passionately in love when the moon is high. Moonstone was once called the “Travelers Stone” as it is said to protect those who travel at night, especially at sea.
What It Can Do:
When worn, can attract true love and arouse passion
If you give your lover a moonstone during the full moon, there will be passion between you always
Can settle disagreements and return things to peaceful status
Sewn into garments can enhance fertility
Wearing moonstone protects sensitive emotions
Enhances divination, prophetic dreams and prevents nightmares
Great for meditation and scrying
Represents yin and attracts peaceful energy
Protects travelers at night and by sea
Considered good luck
Balances male-female energies and aids men who want to get in touch with their feminine side
Affects the female reproductive cycle and alleviates menstrual-related diseases and tensions
Helps with digestive and reproductive systems, assimilates nutrients, eliminates toxins and fluid retention, and alleviates degenerative conditions of the skin, hair, eyes and fleshy organs such as the liver and pancreas.
How to Get the Best Out Of: Wear as a ring or place on the appropriate body part, would recommend the forehead, for spiritual experiences, and solar plexus or heart for emotions. Women may need to remove Moonstone at full moon.
How to Cleanse and Charge: Moonstone is relatively soft stone, 6 on the Mohs scale, so it should be handled with care as it can be easily scratched or crushed. Moonstone should be stored separate from other jewelry in its own soft bag or lined box and should not be worn while performing strenuous tasks that could result in it getting bumped or scratched. It can be cleaned with plain water and a soft cloth. If it gets scratched, take it to a jeweler to have it polished out.
Charge your moonstone in the light of the waxing moon and keep it out of direct sunlight.
Crystal Grid: N/A Couldn't find one that wasn't too complex @_@

Newt’s Birthday
Newt heard a knock at the door. He got up and went to answer the door. He opened it and saw his brother there, a small box of chocolate cake in his hands, and a big smile on his face.
“Hello, Newt,” Theseus said happily.
“Hello, Theseus.”
“Happy birthday!”
“Thank you.” Newt smiled, stepping aside to let Theseus in.
Theseus set the cake on the dining table and took out a candle and his wand.
“How’s your day going so far?” he asked as he prepared the cake.
“Good! I took care of my creatures, and I also got word of a new creature in Sri Lanka. I’m going to set out for there in a few days.”
“Ah, that’s great. Must be excited,” Theseus said warmly.
“I am,” Newt said.
“Well, I’m especially glad I’m here then. I get to see you before you go for…who knows how long.”
“It’ll be a month.”
“A month, then.”
Newt smiled at him. “I’ll miss you, too.”
Theseus gave him a small smile.
Then, Theseus lit the candle with his wand.
“Alright. Ready?” Theseus asked, grinning.
Newt took a deep breath. Oh boy, Theseus was really going to do this.
“Happy birthday to you,” Theseus began to sing.
Newt smiled sheepishly as Theseus continued singing. When it was time, Newt closed his eyes, made a wish, and blew out the candle.
“Yaaaay!” Theseus cheered. Newt chuckled.
Newt cut the cake and they both ate, chatting happily as they did so.
It had been some time since they had spent time together. It was nice to finally catch up.
Before long, it was time for Theseus to go. To Theseus’s surprise, Newt hugged him.
“Thank you for coming,” Newt mumbled into his older brother’s shoulder.
Theseus tightened his hold on Newt.
“Of course.” He smiled. “I love you.”
“I love you, too.”
They held each other a little longer. Then, they pulled out of the hug.
“Happy birthday,” Theseus farewelled.
“Thank you.”

Doug’s fresh from a trip across Southeast Asia, and in today’s episode, we dive into the contrasts between East and West. From the comparative pristine streets of Thailand to the hotel standards in Malaysia, Doug lays out why he believes that part of the world is the place to be – and what that means for those of us still dealing with the decay of Western cities.
We also get into some historical events of the day, from Encyclopedia Britannica’s pages to an old encounter with Sean Connery. WIP WEDNESDAY!!!
week #11
more amnesia au! originally, i had wanted to do the seven sentences for caroline's b-day fic that won the poll, but like ... i may not have finished. those seven sentences.
She’d hoped that calling ahead would also ensure that there would be no surprises for them, but the first thing Rebekah tells them when they step over the threshold, hands on her hips, is, “Okay, I need you to understand that I only invited one of them. The other two tagged along.” Caroline’s eyes narrow immediately, and she grabs for Klaus’s elbow to prevent him from flashing off somewhere and commencing the aforementioned (again and again) refusing to talk to anyone. “Invited who, Bekah?” She rolls her eyes and crosses her arms over her chest. The whole thing is painfully theatrical. “Your secondary maid of honour.” Ah. Bonnie. That’s … actually, that was smart. “You’re both equally my maids of honour, there’s no secondary—” “If you say so, sweets. But she brought the doppelgänger—ugh—and Stefan with her. I don’t know why. Or how. I thought Stefan was in Sri Lanka, but apparently not.” Klaus perks up under her hand. “Stefan’s here?” “And bloody Becker Wexer—what a stupid name, gods—sent your secretary an email, signed by the—oh, what’s her name? The new leader of the Lacernas.” “I can deal with Wexer and Theresa Davenport later,” Caroline says. “Bonnie is here? To help? Where is she?” “The yellow room.” Rebekah waves a careless hand. “And she bitched about having to assist my wanker of a brother—” Klaus’s quiet “Hey!” goes ignored. “—I swear I nearly snapped her bloody neck, but she’s here.”
Caroline snickers, and starts for the yellow room. Both siblings hurry to follow—Klaus has, apparently, abandoned his plan of hiding upstairs in favour of seeing Stefan, which is actually very cute of him, not that she’ll tell him that. The yellow room is a pretty sitting room in the east wing, done like the rest of the house in baroque style. It gets its name from the furniture that’s upholstered in brocaded yellow silk, imported from the Parisian townhouse, and the paintings Klaus had selected personally to follow the theme. She doesn’t get to see much of it, because as soon as she steps over the threshold she’s beset by all three of her friends, talking at once, so fast that her brain nearly short-circuits trying to follow. “Okay, everyone stop talking—now.” Well-trained by years of obeying her orders to the letter before every school dance, they all three shut up. “One by one,” she says then, lifting a finger into the air. “Hi, Care,” Elena greets, somewhat embarrassed if the tone of her voice and the colour high on her cheeks are anything to go by. “How’s life?” “Not great at the moment,” she answers truthfully. “How on Earth are you and Stef here? I thought you—” She inclines his head sharply in Stefan’s direction, “—were finding your inner peace or whatever in Sri Lanka. I was afraid you’d become a hippy and then I’d have to drag you out of that lifestyle by the ear, because I’m not having you arrive dressed in rags and barefoot to my wedding.” “I wouldn’t—Elena, tell her I wouldn’t.” Elena, to condemn him further, looks away.

Plymouth couple told they can leave Gaza — but not their kids
A Plymouth, MA family that has been trapped in Gaza since the Israel-Hamas war began is still inside the enclave, after being told at a border crossing that the children would not be allowed through to Egypt.
Hazem Shafai, 47, Sanaa Shafai, 36, and their children, Seera, 13, Yomna, 10, and Jaser, 2, had already been turned away at the Rafah Crossing at the Egyptian border with Gaza multiple times over the past few weeks. Diplomatic talks produced a breakthrough earlier this week, allowing injured Palestinians and foreign nationals to escape the war zone.
So the Shafai family traveled to the crossing again Thursday but “they were expected to leave the children behind,” Hazem’s brother Hani Shafai told The Boston Globe.
According to Hani, Hazem and Sanaa’s names were on a list of people who would be allowed to enter Egypt, but their children’s names were not. They made the decision to return to the place where they had been sheltering.
The fact that the children were not given safe passage baffled the family.
“Nobody is going to just leave a 2-year-old, a 10-year-old, and a 13-year-old behind,” Hani told the Globe. “These kids were born in the U.S., they’re citizens just like everyone else, to say ‘leave them behind’ is just inhumane.”
Another Massachusetts family, also with a young child, was allowed to leave Gaza Thursday morning. Medway residents Abood Okal; his wife, Wafaa Abuzayda; and their 1-year-old son are now safely in Egypt, planning a way to return home. An attorney and family friend of theirs, Sammy Nabulsi, shared some details of how the border crossing process works. Nabulsi had been advocating for the Okal family and other U.S. residents to be let through the crossing.
There are two lists of people who are allowed through, Nabulsi told the Globe. One is maintained by U.S. State Department officials and the other by Palestinian officials. It is Nabulsi’s understanding that those looking to escape must be on both lists, and that the Palestinian list is subject to frequent changes.
The children’s names were apparently not on both lists, forcing the Shafai family to head back into Gaza and hope that the situation changes in the future. They are in touch with the U.S. Embassy, the State Department, and congressional representatives to coordinate an exit plan, the Globe reported.
The humanitarian crisis in Gaza continues to spiral out of control, even with a slow trickle of aid now allowed in from Egypt. The Okal family described staying inside for days on end, surviving off canned goods and, occasionally, saltwater as bombs rained down outside.
The Shafai family has also had trouble getting clean drinking water, Hani told the Globe. Dehydrated already, their situation was made worse when many of them contracted the flu last weekend. Most of them have recovered, but 2-year-old Jaser still has a fever and is throwing up. While he works to care for his family, Hazem is also on the hunt for desperately needed diabetes medication.
Palestinian officials released a list of almost 600 people that were approved to leave on Thursday, Reuters reported. Those names were all checked by Israel, with the country reportedly vetting lists to make sure no Hamas fighters escape. Residents of Belgium, Greece, Sri Lanka, the Netherlands and more were included on the list. But many others were turned away, despite having valid passports.
Egyptian national Ghada el-Saka told Reuters that she was visiting relatives in Gaza when the war broke out. She and her daughter wept in frustration at the Gaza side of the Rafah Crossing Thursday after being told that they could not cross.
“Why are you leaving us in this destruction? We’ve seen death with our own eyes,” she said, according to Reuters. “I want to pass. We are not animals. I have Egyptian rights, we are Egyptian.”

I'm not gonna reblog the post because it's super long and mostly about Saris (and how it's fine for white people to wear them for any reason they feel like) but there was like a two-sentence mention of how some people (wrongly) think it's not okay for non-Japanese people to wear kimono. First of all ime most Japanese people's reaction to a foreigner wearing a kimono is "oh my god, rad!!" Second of all a kimono is literally just. A garment. The complex, intricately patterned, vividly colored kimono that people associate with the word "kimono" is just a really fancy expensive dress. (there's a history associated with the making of really nice and beautiful kimonos because the hand woven fabric and the carefully planned and placed designs and theme/meaning of the imagery and colors and the traditionally made dyes used mean that that expensive kimono is a work of art in the same way that a painting in a museum is a work of art. Some Japanese people use kimono as an artistic expression, and honoring those carefully made and often historically significant pieces is honoring the talent and hard work that went into creating them, not honoring like. The concept of clothes. Someone, even a Japanese person, acquiring a priceless kimono and then slam-dunking it into the trash would cause outcry not because "white person" but because "HEY MY ARTWORK :(") But there are very plain and cheap kimono and mid-price kimono and knockoff kimono made in like Sri Lanka and imported and sold to tourists. Both men and women historically wore and still wear (differently styled according to presenting gender) kimono, both expensive ones to important events and regular ones to other places and times where they feel like wearing one. It's like the difference between wearing a nice dress to a wedding and a sundress to the local garlic festival. Similarly, there are special types of garments (I can't be arsed to look up the proper names for these) that are for religious and/or cultural ceremonies ONLY, and those are often made specially for the person who will be wearing them or have been handed down through the family and thus have family significance (like a family crest). If the garment wasn't made with specific-you in mind, then it's weird and rude for you to walk around wearing it in the same way people are gonna side-eye you for showing up at mass dressed up like the priest. But the takeaway here is that in the phrase "special clothing" the important word is "special," not "clothing." Get a kimono if you want. Plain, fancy, made in Japan, made in Finland, whatever. Put it on, run around in it. Do housework in it. Wear it wrong. Set it on fire. No one cares.

Yoruichi's Beast Transformation
I'm deciding that House Shihōin's beast transformations are mostly limited to Felidae (cats), with maybe the rare member being more generally from Feliforma (cat-like). Personally, I'd restrict them to Panthera tigris (see below), but I'll allow that it could vary away from a particular species because of handwavy supernatural genetics, since Bleach has got giants and all sorts of weird stuff in it.
Anyway, based on the below screenshot and my own allusions on this blog in the past, Yoruichi's transformation is a giant black tiger. While tigers apparently only entered India about 12,000 years ago (as they never made it to Sri Lanka, and despite being in Southeast Asia for up to 2 million years, which feels rather strange but that's a matter for paleontologists) and leopards are perhaps the better fit, I just like tigers more and I think they fit her better. Black tigers have never been fully scientifically confirmed, but again: I don't care. (It also makes her having tiger stripe tattoos for a while highly ironic.)
Yoruichi at the shoulder is almost exactly 11 times (roughly) the width of Ichigo's skull. Based on production drawings, Ichigo's skull should be about 134 mm wide, so she should be about 148 cm tall at the shoulder. To quote Wikipedia quoting an old book, "39 adult female Bengal tigers weighed an average of 132 kg (291 lb) with a maximum of 156 kg (344 lb) and an average total length of 254 cm (100 in) ranging from 239 to 277 cm (94 to 109 in)." By comparison with males, their average shoulder height should've been around 89 cm. This would suggest Yoruichi ought to be about 1.66 times bigger than average, suggesting a length of 421.6 cm and a weight of 219 kg. Considering we know Soul Society Arc Yoruichi is scrawny and is actually well below a healthy weight as a human at this time, while using her human bulking up as a guide (42 kg to 56 kg) would suggest 292 kg, which is heavier than the heaviest known female tiger (164 kg scaling up to 272 kg), it ought to probably wind up in about the same place as she'd be starting from below average.
Having said all that, I personally get the feeling that as portrayed, she ought to be taller at the shoulder than Ichigo standing up as of this time. (The square-cube law would apply in real life, but magic, so again: who cares.) Thus I'm going to instead scale her to 180 cm (5'11"). This would make her 513 cm (16'10") long, and using the known maximum would give her a "fit" weight of 331 kg (730 lbs). This would make her about as tall (though much longer and not nearly as heavy) as the tallest Clydesdale horse.
I'm also going to just assert here that Chika was the equivalent of a white tiger or golden tiger by comparison, thus his hair being a different color but not his eyes.
To really get into the weeds of how this all came about, we have to do some digging. Doing more homework now, and discovering that based on genetic evidence the Toba supervolcano eruption almost certainly did not result in a population bottleneck feels hard to square with the supposedly "Pompeii-like" excavations noted here, but at any rate people were apparently in India before Toba erupted. So I'm going to soft-delist "Story" as blog canon.
So the basic gist is probably something to the effect of, there were Tiger Yōkai in Southeast Asia, one ran off to India, fell in love with a human there, had a kid ("Yuvan") that was a Hanyō, and he was a great warrior and was around when the Soul King appeared and was involved with his binding. This could've happened up to ~80,000 years ago, or notably nearer to the present (but probably still more than 15,000 years ago).

My critique of these outfits. I am not a professional and these are just opinions.
Bolivia: Festive and inspired. Unmistakable South American vibes. I dig it. 7/10
Brazil: What the hell? Did you get this outfit from Spirit Halloween? I know you can do better Brazil. 2/10
Cambodia: Back to some traditional garb. I like it. 7/10
Cuba: Who's uncle is this? Non-offensive, but just normal. 5/10
Czechia: Not bad. Feels historic but lacks a little bang. 6/10
Dominican Republic: I'm sorry, I can't hear you over the sound of those tights screaming against those muscular thighs. Almost enough to make me forget the colonialism associated with that outfit. 8/10
Ecuador: Alright, I see most of South America decided to use the same playbook. Each distinct, but similar vibe. 7/10
France: What are you doing France? It feels like you tried to steal South America's homework. This feels wrong, and no amount of sexy abs is going to distract me from that. 2/10
Hong Kong: Ok now, this I like. This feels both traditional and modern. I see we are trying to bribe the judge again with sexy abs.... I'll allow it. 9/10
India: This looks very nice. Elegant and professional vibe. A look I wish was actually more common. 8/10
Indonesia: This is interesting. Furry, but has an almost Mortal Kombat vibe to it. I'm intrigued. 8/10
Japan: I've definitely seen this look before. Was it the fisherman or during one of the festivals? Like the jacket, but the back profile means that I can't see the full outfit. And it's just long enough to be a tease. Shorts? A fundoshi? Show me the goods Japan!!! 6/10
Laos: Kung Lao? Is that you? Not bad, but not too memorable. 6/10
Macau: Are you wearing a transparent suit over swim trunks? I am perplexed. 4/10
Malaysia: Alright sir, I'll keep it real for you. The outfit is an ok tan suit with a nice turban. The pose though makes me curious about the movie that you are the lead in. 6/10
Mexico: Vibrant South American vibes. +0.5 for the Bi pride colors. 7.5/10
Myanmar: I just feel calm looking at you. You look so chill and peaceful that I just feel relaxed. Soft vibes. 7/10
Nigeria: TAJADOR!!! (Yes, that is a Kamen Rider OOO reference) Serious red bird vibes. 7/10
Panama: Namor? Seriously, Wakanda Forever's Namor is all I can see. 6/10
Peru: Sexy scantily clad man covered in gold, eh? I've warned you all about trying to bribe the judge... 9/10
Philippines: Who is responsible for the copypasta of homework? Yes it looks fine, but seriously people. 7/10
Puerto Rico: You look exhausted after spending a long day out in the fields. 6/10
Romania: Nice traditional garb. The head ornament is a bit distracting. 6/10
South Africa: Queen Titania, I didn't realize you would be joining us. Bold choice. 8/10
South Korea: Thank you for not trying to bribe the judge. Very strong Joseon vibes. Good luck on the imperial exams. 7/10
Spain: Ferdinand, I don't care what you or Isabella have to say about the Inquisition, you in fact DID NOT have to do it to them. 3/10
Sri Lanka: Sir, you look fabulous. 8/10
Switzerland: Go home, you are drunk. 2/10
Thailand: So we got the gold covered man, but looks like he is actually inspired by some traditional art instead of just eye candy for the judge. 9.5/10
United Kingdom: Oi guvner! Dis here is a competition, and you are just some bloke. 1/10
USA: What the hell is this? You and France copied the homework of South America, and you look silly. Nope. DQ. -2/10
Venezuela: Did you even try? Boring. 2/10
Vietnam: Ok, what kinda god are you supposed to be, and what are your myths. I must know. I see we are still using the sexy abs, but now we have the thin hair line down the stomach to... ahem. See me after the competition sir. 10/10
brb the whole discord in an uproar at the UNCONSCIONABLE results of Mister Global 2022
