After reading lots about Mycorrhizal Networks and Trees and Bryozoans, I believe intelligent extraterrestrial life might be far more different from us than we assume.
It is so common to be stationary and fixed in place as an organism, I think aliens might not be able to grasp the concept of "travel," let alone space travel.
Communication is another difficulty. Would an organism adapted to communicate by chemical signals or by simply being linked physically to other organisms be able to comprehend the idea of sending messages between stars?
And then there is the issue of scale.
Organisms the size of, for instance, bees would take so long to establish a global/planet-wide communication, travel and trade network that progressing to interest in space travel might prove impossible.
As life forms go, humans are incredibly large. We are megafauna. The vast, vast majority of all living things on earth, even counting only multicellular things, are smaller than a human. It is deeply out of the ordinary for us to be so big.
This means that the spread of human populations, the impact of humans on their environment, and the ability of humans to communicate with each other over long distances progressed much, much faster than it would have if we were more average in size.
But it would also be detrimental if we were larger. The larger the creature, the harder it gets physically not only to overcome the gravity of your planet, but to create any type of transportation that can move you faster than you can move yourself.
The bigger you are, the more economical it becomes to either be in water or not move around at all.

The Sandown Clown is a mysterious humanoid that was encountered by 2 children in May of 1973 at Lake Common in Sandown on the Isle of Wight in the UK. The Sandown Clown is described as a tall humanoid standing around 6.5 feet tall and very thin with white skin that had the feel and look of paper; it's hands and feet also only had three digits on them and it had two triangular blue eyes, a brown rectangular shaped nose, and yellow lips which all appeared to be painted on it and it also wore a hat in where reddish-brown hair could be seen under it; it also had two antenna which appeared to be made of wood and it also carried a microphone. The Sandown Clown was said to be friendly but very shy and scared of humans; it was so scared of humans in fact that it said if it were attacked, it would not defend itself. It drank water from the stream that it cleaned before drinking it and ate berries that it ate oddly; it ate them by putting its head forward and moving the berries back and forth between both of its eyes and then down into its mouth. It had a sign that had the words, "Sam" and "All colors". When the kids asked if it was a ghost the Sandown Clown replied, Well not really, but I am in an odd sort of way." Any other questions the children asked it about itself it replied with "You know". The kids talked to it for 30 minutes then it was never seen again. To this day, the Sandown Clown still remains a mystery.

Humpback whale "conversations" provide valuable insight on how humans may one day communicate with life beyond Earth.  Researchers from the SETI Institute, University of California Davis and the Alaska Whale Foundation recently "conversed" with a humpback whale named Twain using an underwater speaker and recorded a humpback "contact" call. Twain responded to the researchers' call by matching the interval variations between signals of each playback call over a 20-minute period.  If you're having a Star Trek flashback, yes, this is awfully reminiscent of that one film in which the crew receives alien whale transmissions that can only be decoded underwater. And in fact, mirroring our sci-fi fantasies, this demonstration of interspecies communication has implications for the search for extraterrestrial intelligence, according to a statement from the SETI Institute.

Every time I see or hear people discussing the Fermi paradox they talk about stuff like the great filter, aliens hiding from us, humans being the first intelligent life, etc, but I almost never hear what I think is the simplest and most probable solution. That the aliens are really far away from us because the universe is fucking huge

Running a few numbers through his head while eating, it had struck him that even if only a vanishingly small proportion of our galaxy's 250 billion stars have habitable planets,* outer space should still be teeming with aliens.
*The International Astronomical Union reported in August 2008 that since the first discovery in 1995 we have now found 360 planets outside our own solar system. None seems likely to support life, but the director of the French Space Agency's planet-hunting program told the Union, "I am really confident that we have an Earth-like planet coming in the next two years."

[W]hen you're playing hide-and-seek, you usually know that you're playing with someone else. We have no idea if there are aliens out there to find! It's possible there's no other life out there, and it's possible there are aliens right next door. Until we find examples of life besides our own, we won't know how common life is in the universe.

Voyager's Golden Record is so fascinating, yet I can't help but wonder what if someone finds it after the Sun has gone out and all life on Earth has died and it's the only thing left of that life that once flourished on planet Earth. Seriously though, I don't think it's very likely that anyone will ever find Voyager plus enough developed life could surely find us by other means, if they haven't already (assuming they would even care because it's possible there's more interesting things out there than our planet)

Upon a cosmic breeze, a soul did wander, seeking solace from the vast expanse of space. A cosmic whisper called, and it answered, drawn by alien song. Interstellar travels led it far and wide, but naught could match that fateful day. An encounter with celestial life, a transformation profound. In moments, in an instant, a being changed - forever bound to the stars.
