Day 21 — Artichecture
This public housing estate in Melbourne's Collingwood was built in 1971 as part of a controversial urban renewal program. 47 of these template designed steel framed concrete towers consisting of pre-cast slabs covered in exposed aggregate, some as tall as 30 storeys, were constructed across inner Melbourne during the 1960s and early 1970s.
Painted by the artist Matt Adnate, the work takes up the entire city facing wall of Collingwood Housing Estate’s 20-storey, 220 apartment tower block. The work profiles four of the estate’s residents and seeks to celebrate the multicultural community that calls the estate home. The residents chosen to represent the neighbourhood include: 6-year-old Arden Watson-Cropley and 10-year-old Ni Na Nguyen, both of whom are being raised in the flats by their single-parent mothers; grandmother Badria Abdo from Oromia, Ethiopia who lives with disability restrictions and came to Australia as a refugee in 2006; and Yulius Antares Taime, a newer resident who relocated to Australia from West Papua, Indonesia just over a year ago.

Honed Concrete: The Sleek, Durable Flooring Solution for Modern Spaces
What Is Honed Concrete?
Honed concrete is a type of decorative concrete finish created by grinding the surface to expose the aggregate, followed by the application of a penetrating sealer. Unlike polished concrete, honed concrete has a matte or satin finish, making it ideal for both indoor and outdoor surfaces.
Its smooth, slip-resistant texture and contemporary aesthetic have made honed concrete a favorite in residential, commercial, and public spaces.
Benefits of Honed Concrete Flooring
✅ Slip-Resistant Finish
Thanks to its slightly textured surface, honed concrete is ideal for wet areas like patios, pool surrounds, walkways, and driveways. It offers better grip compared to polished concrete.
✅ Durable and Long-Lasting
Honed concrete is extremely hard-wearing. It resists heavy foot traffic, UV exposure, and changing weather conditions, making it perfect for indoor and outdoor applications.
✅ Low Maintenance
With the right sealer, honed concrete floors are easy to clean and resistant to staining. Routine maintenance involves sweeping and occasional mopping—no waxing required.
✅ Elegant and Versatile Look
Honed concrete offers a clean, natural stone-like appearance. It can be customized with different aggregate exposures, colors, and finishes to match any design style.
Common Applications of Honed Concrete
Residential driveways and walkways
Outdoor entertainment areas and patios
Commercial entrances and courtyards
Retail spaces and showrooms
Public spaces like parks and plazas

How Is Honed Concrete Installed?
Surface Preparation: The concrete is cleaned and any coatings are removed.
Grinding: Diamond grinders remove the surface layer to expose aggregate.
Honing: Finer grits are used to refine the surface to a smooth, matte finish.
Sealing: A penetrating sealer is applied to enhance durability and stain resistance.
📌 Tip: Always hire a professional contractor with honed concrete experience to ensure a uniform and high-quality finish.
Cost of Honed Concrete Flooring
The cost of honed concrete typically ranges from $80 to $120 per square meter in Australia, depending on factors such as:
Area size
Existing surface condition
Aggregate exposure level
Type of sealer used
While honed concrete may have a higher upfront cost than traditional paving or tiles, its longevity and minimal maintenance make it a cost-effective solution over time.
Is Honed Concrete Right for Your Project?
Honed concrete is perfect for homeowners and businesses seeking a modern, functional, and stylish flooring solution. Whether you're renovating an outdoor area or designing a sleek commercial space, this finish offers durability and visual appeal.

How Effective Is Non-Slip Epoxy Flooring in Wet Conditions?
When it comes to ensuring safety in both commercial and residential settings, flooring plays a crucial role—particularly in areas frequently exposed to water. In Australia, where humidity and coastal environments are common, Non-Slip Epoxy Flooring Brisbane has become a sought-after solution for tackling slippery surfaces. But just how effective is this flooring system in wet conditions?
Below, this article explores the characteristics, benefits, and real-world performance of Non-Slip Epoxy Flooring Brisbane, especially under wet and potentially hazardous conditions.
What Is Non-Slip Epoxy Flooring?
Non-slip epoxy flooring is a specially formulated coating system that combines resin and hardeners to create a durable, seamless surface with anti-slip properties. It is applied over concrete floors and is often enhanced with aggregates or textured finishes to improve grip. This type of flooring is known for its resistance to chemicals, abrasion, and water—making it ideal for high-traffic and moisture-prone environments.
Why Wet Conditions Demand Non-Slip Solutions
Wet environments significantly increase the risk of slip and fall accidents. Kitchens, bathrooms, garages, pool surrounds, and industrial zones all face this risk regularly. Moisture reduces the friction between the surface and footwear, making traditional flooring materials like tiles, vinyl, or untreated concrete inadequate. That’s where Non-Slip Epoxy Flooring Brisbane excels, offering not just durability but also improved traction underfoot.
How Does Non-Slip Epoxy Flooring Perform in Wet Conditions?
Non-Slip Epoxy Flooring Brisbane is designed with water resistance and traction in mind. Its effectiveness in wet conditions can be attributed to several key features:
Textured Finish: Additives like quartz, silica sand, or aluminium oxide are often embedded in the epoxy layer. These materials create a micro-textured surface that maintains grip even when wet.
Seamless Installation: The flooring is installed without joints or grout lines where water can accumulate. This seamless quality prevents puddles and helps keep the surface dry and clean.
Hydrophobic Properties: The epoxy surface naturally repels water to a certain extent, reducing the likelihood of persistent wet spots and helping to maintain traction.
Customised Slip Ratings: In compliance with Australian standards (AS 4586), epoxy coatings can be tailored to meet specific slip resistance ratings, depending on the intended use. This ensures that each installation provides optimal safety.
Applications Where Wet Resistance Matters Most
There are numerous locations where Non-Slip Epoxy Flooring Brisbane is particularly beneficial, especially when constant exposure to water is a concern:
Commercial Kitchens: Spills and steam make anti-slip floors essential for employee safety.
Public Bathrooms: Frequent use and wet foot traffic demand reliable slip-resistant surfaces.
Garages and Workshops: Oil, water, and other fluids create a hazardous environment without the right flooring.
Pool Decks and Changing Rooms: Barefoot traffic in combination with water exposure necessitates non-slip finishes.
Food Processing Plants: Hygiene and safety standards require flooring that resists both moisture and bacteria.
Longevity and Maintenance in Moist Environments
A major advantage of Non-Slip Epoxy Flooring Brisbane is its low maintenance requirements. The impermeable surface is easy to clean and resistant to stains, mould, and bacteria growth. Regular cleaning with non-abrasive detergents is typically sufficient to keep the floor in optimal condition. In wet environments, this is crucial, as standing water can lead to hygiene issues and long-term structural damage if not properly managed.
Moreover, epoxy flooring’s durability ensures it maintains its non-slip characteristics for years, even under heavy usage and exposure to moisture. Unlike mats or tapes, which can wear out or peel away, epoxy remains firmly bonded to the substrate.
Compliance and Safety Standards in Australia
In Australia, safety standards for floor slip resistance are governed by AS 4586 and AS 4663. These guidelines ensure that floors in commercial and public spaces meet minimum requirements for slip prevention. Non-Slip Epoxy Flooring Brisbane can be engineered to meet these criteria, offering property owners peace of mind when it comes to legal compliance and workplace safety obligations.
Visual Appeal Without Sacrificing Safety
In addition to performance, Non-Slip Epoxy Flooring Brisbane also provides aesthetic flexibility. It can be customised in various colours, patterns, and finishes, ensuring that safety does not come at the cost of design. This makes it an ideal choice for modern interiors and public venues where both functionality and appearance are important.
Conclusion: Is It Worth the Investment?
In wet and humid climates like Brisbane, safety concerns related to slippery surfaces cannot be overstated. Non-Slip Epoxy Flooring Brisbane proves to be an effective and reliable solution, offering not only improved safety but also durability, hygiene, and aesthetic appeal.
With its high resistance to moisture, long lifespan, and compliance with Australian safety standards, this flooring system is an investment that delivers long-term value in both residential and commercial settings.
Choosing Non-Slip Epoxy Flooring Brisbane is not just about addressing current safety concerns—it’s about future-proofing a space against potential hazards and creating a secure environment for all occupants.

Is a Coloured Concrete Driveway Worth the Investment?

When planning a driveway, functionality often takes the front seat. But who says practical can’t also be visually appealing? A coloured concrete driveway offers both durability and design, making it a popular choice for homeowners across Australia.
So, is it just about looks, or does it come with real long-term benefits?
What Sets a Coloured Concrete Driveway Apart from Standard Options?
Unlike plain grey concrete, a coloured driveway brings personality and charm to your home’s exterior. Using pigments mixed directly into the concrete or added through surface treatments, it creates a finish that is uniform, long-lasting, and tailored to your style.
Beyond appearance, coloured concrete is just as tough as regular concrete, making it ideal for withstanding vehicles, foot traffic, and the elements.
What Colours Are Available for Concrete Driveways?
From natural tones like sandstone, beige, and charcoal to bolder choices such as terracotta or slate blue, the colour range is extensive. Some homeowners opt for earthy shades that blend with landscaping, while others choose darker hues that mask tyre marks and stains.
Finishes can be further enhanced with exposed aggregate, stamped patterns, or sealed gloss effects for added depth and texture.
Does a Coloured Concrete Driveway Last as Long?
Yes, and often even longer. A coloured concrete driveway that is professionally installed and sealed can last decades with minimal maintenance. Sealers help lock in colour, resist UV fading, and prevent water and oil from penetrating the surface.
Routine cleaning and occasional resealing keep the surface looking fresh, even after years of use.
How Does It Compare to Other Driveway Materials?
While brick and pavers offer a charming look, they often require more maintenance, such as weed control between joints or replacing damaged sections. Asphalt, on the other hand, can fade and soften in the Australian heat.
Concrete stands out for its strength and low upkeep, and when colour is added, it competes visually with more decorative (and often more expensive) options.
Is It Expensive to Install?
A coloured concrete driveway may cost slightly more than plain concrete due to the added materials and labour involved. However, it remains more affordable than premium stone or tiled surfaces.
Given its lifespan and visual impact, many homeowners view it as a worthwhile investment that adds value and kerb appeal to their property.
Can You Add Colour to an Existing Driveway?
Yes. If your current driveway is in good condition, colour can be added using tinted sealers or resurfacing products. This is a cost-effective way to refresh the look without a full replacement.
However, results can vary depending on the surface condition, so it’s best to consult with a professional before proceeding.
Final Thoughts: Is a Coloured Concrete Driveway Right for You?
A coloured concrete driveway combines style, strength, and longevity in one solution. It offers a personalised touch to your property while holding up to the daily wear and tear of vehicles and weather. Whether you’re building new or upgrading your current surface, it’s an option well worth considering.
Thinking about giving your driveway a fresh new look? Colour could be the perfect way to make a bold first impression.

Top Benefits of Honed Concrete Floors for High-Traffic Areas
In both commercial and residential settings across Australia, choosing the right flooring material for high-traffic areas is a crucial decision. From office lobbies to retail spaces and busy household interiors, floors must withstand daily wear while maintaining aesthetic appeal. Among the many flooring options available, honed concrete has emerged as a top contender due to its blend of strength, style, and functionality. This article explores the top benefits of honed concrete floors for high-traffic areas, offering insights into why this surface is increasingly preferred by architects, builders, and property owners.
What Is Honed Concrete?
Honed concrete is a smooth, matte-finished surface created by grinding down concrete to remove imperfections and expose a refined aggregate layer beneath. Unlike polished concrete, which is brought to a high-gloss shine, honed concrete offers a low-sheen, satin-like appearance that is both modern and practical. It is often sealed to enhance durability and resistance to moisture and staining, making it ideal for spaces that experience constant foot traffic.
1. Exceptional Durability
One of the most significant advantages of honed concrete is its unmatched durability. Designed to endure the pressure of heavy footfall, this flooring option resists cracking, chipping, and other common forms of damage. It holds up exceptionally well under the weight of heavy furniture, shopping trolleys, and continuous use, making it a preferred solution for commercial properties such as shopping centres, offices, and schools.
2. Low Maintenance Requirements
Floors in high-traffic areas often require constant upkeep. However, honed concrete offers a low-maintenance alternative. Its sealed surface repels dust, dirt, and spills, making cleaning effortless with simple sweeping and occasional mopping. Unlike carpets or timber floors, there is no need for frequent polishing, waxing, or deep cleaning. This ease of maintenance contributes to long-term savings and operational efficiency.
3. Slip-Resistant Surface
Safety is a critical concern in high-traffic zones, especially in public and commercial environments. Honed concrete can be treated with a non-slip finish that improves traction, reducing the risk of slips and falls. This feature is particularly beneficial in areas exposed to moisture, such as entrances, kitchens, and outdoor walkways, helping businesses meet Australian safety standards while protecting patrons and employees.
4. Visually Appealing and Versatile
Beyond its functional benefits, honed concrete is valued for its stylish, contemporary appearance. Available in various tones, textures, and aggregate exposure levels, it can be tailored to match a wide range of interior and exterior design aesthetics. Whether the goal is a sleek industrial look or a softer natural finish, this flooring solution delivers visual appeal without compromising on performance.
5. Cost-Effective in the Long Term
While the initial installation cost of honed concrete can be higher than some alternatives, it proves to be cost-effective over time. Its long lifespan, minimal maintenance, and resistance to damage significantly reduce replacement and repair costs. For businesses and property owners, this means less disruption and more value for money over the floor’s life cycle.
6. Environmentally Friendly Choice
Sustainability is an increasing priority in Australian construction. Honed concrete supports green building practices as it utilises existing concrete slabs, reducing the need for new materials. Additionally, it does not require harsh chemicals for cleaning or upkeep, further minimising environmental impact. The use of energy-efficient sealing products can also contribute to LEED or Green Star certification efforts.
7. Resistant to Weather and UV Exposure
For high-traffic areas that extend to outdoor spaces, honed concrete stands out due to its weather-resistant properties. It performs well in varying Australian climates, from coastal humidity to intense inland heat. UV-stable sealants prevent the surface from fading or degrading under sunlight, ensuring the floor retains its aesthetic and functional qualities throughout the year.
8. Increases Property Value
Investing in honed concrete can enhance the overall value of a property. Its sleek finish, durability, and minimal upkeep appeal to potential buyers or tenants looking for practical yet elegant design features. Whether for commercial real estate or residential applications, quality flooring is a key selling point that can influence purchasing decisions.
Conclusion
When it comes to flooring options for high-traffic environments, few materials offer the comprehensive benefits of honed concrete. From outstanding durability and low maintenance to safety, aesthetics, and environmental responsibility, it ticks all the boxes for Australian property owners seeking a long-lasting, stylish, and functional solution. As urban design and construction trends continue to prioritise performance and sustainability, honed concrete is well-positioned to remain a top choice for years to come.
