Literally just me gushing about eurobeat
Y'know what? Tumblr, you get a little treat. I don't have much better of a place to post something long-winded like this, so here we are.
I love eurobeat music. Big surprise from the girl with it in her handle, right? But I don't just love one kind of eurobeat. No, I'd go so far as to say I love it all. This genre becomes an absolute buffet of delightful, energetic, silly fun when you forget about trying to look for ways it "doesn't count", and try to look for the ways it does.
I love early eurobeat! I love the stuff that's indistinguishable from early Italo Disco, the formative things where the tempo was still low and the disco vibes were still high! That's Eurobeat and the first few volumes of Super Eurobeat are great for this!
I love later eurobeat, too! Even if some of the sounds aren't always my favorites, I love that folks were trying new things and dabbling with new sounds, experimenting in ways that in previous years seemed prohibited! Comparing some aliases who have been going for multiple decades from this period to when they started is also super fun!
I love traditional eurobeat, if I could pick a name for it! Faster, more rave-influenced, whether or not it's still got some disco elements in it, themes about nightclubs and love and loss and betrayal and that ever-ubiquitous fire! Maharajah Night has some great examples, leading into the bulk of pre-200 Super Eurobeat volumes!
I love J-Euro! It turns out, folks in Japan have different ideas and tastes and approach the genre VERY differently than the folks in Italy do, and I love how it sounds! I love how the sound design is so different and the speed jumps a little higher!
I love indie eurobeat! I love hearing how new and amateur producers take a crack at the sound, and seeing what folks do as the tools for making it grow and evolve! Even virtual versions of the synths the masters used to use are available now, and it's fantastic to hear how those things sound in new hands! I love the ways indie producers bend, break, and work around the rules of the genre and still deliver a uniquely "eurobeat" experience! Without this category, I would never have found DJ Command, DJ Bouche, Turbo, Vikas Beatbox, the Galaxian Recordings crew, and so, so many more!
I love happy eurobeat! The nature of the genre makes it so straightforward to pair its signature energy with joy, delight, empowerment!
I love sad eurobeat! That very same energy that powers joy and happiness can be just as powerful for driving home sorrow and sadness, and some lyrics even carry strong emotional weight (we're well past the days of eurobeat being only about Burning Love Car Baby Fire Desire Tonight Drift Tokyo, y'know)!
I love fandom eurobeat! Yup! Vocaloid, Touhou, MLP:FiM, Vtubers; whatever you may be a fan of, chances are good there's a eurobeat remix out there (or even an original) that suits your fancy!
I love Initial D eurobeat! How could I not, right? The classics are classics for a reason, and eurobeat and drift racing are a uniquely fantastic pair. Of all the things eurobeat could be about, it's one of a few that really knock it out of the park!
I love feminine eurobeat! Masculine eurobeat is great too, but it already gets a lot of love in the other categories, so I want to celebrate those eurobeat songs that feel quite the opposite while still being perfectly eurobeat! Eurobeat is broad enough to express feelings like this, too!
I love songs that aren't quite eurobeat, but have elements of it! And I love eurobeat songs that heavily include elements from other genres, too! Eurobeat is like any other genre-- it has not always had the same chances to rub shoulders with other sounds in the dance space, but when it does, some wonderful things happen! And the whole music world is enriched for that cross-pollenation!
I love the songs I used to dislike! To think I'd go from vastly disliking Norma Sheffield's discography, to adoring it so fully! Disliking "Higher Higher More and More" to seeking it out from time to time! Not being fond of SAIFAM/BBB's style, to knowing some of its songs by heart!
And most of all, I love that I get to MAKE this stuff for a living! I do not take the fact that this could've not worked out trivially, and I hope I've rewarded your patiences well with a lot of new favorites and starting points for diving deeper into the genre over the last... almost 20 years, now!
And that's just the tip of the iceberg! I understand some eurobeat isn't to everyone's taste, but I think if you haven't tasted all that there is out there, you owe it to yourself to see how you feel about it. You might be pleasantly surprised!

Batangas: My Sky and Earth—An Intimate Recollection and Reflection of My Childhood in the Philippines
To celebrate the first anniversary of Batangas: My Sky and Earth, the author is thrilled to present a special Second Edition! The eBook and hardcover editions feature high-resolution photographs in both monochrome and color, while the paperback offers enhanced black-and-white images from the original release. This unique Second Edition is a heartfelt gesture of gratitude from the author to thank readers and commemorate this significant milestone.
About the Book
When Bong Serrano learned that his older brother, Boying, had cancer, the notes he had jotted down about his childhood took on new meaning. Memories of his time with his family in the Philippines came rushing back. At the center of those memories were the precious moments he'd spent with his Kuya. Faced with his brother's impending death, Bong asked himself: "What if one day I lose my memories? Who will remember us?" Thus began Bong's yearslong journey of immortalizing not only his childhood but also his country's history and traditions. Bong grew up in the southern province of Batangas, on Luzon Island. Batangas: My Sky and Earth is a celebration of that childhood. This memoir takes you into a world made rich by the intricate descriptions of life in the Philippines in the 1970s and '80s, where the family unit is close, and many households are multigenerational. From family dynamics to church duties to delicious food and the inevitable annual typhoons, Bong invites you to experience his culture from the inside. Throughout this memoir, Bong honors his childhood home and country and the memory of his beloved brother. The choice to interweave Tagalog throughout this book's pages helps to steep the story in Filipino culture further. A whole village raised this boy, and as Bong looks back on his childhood, the lessons he learned come to the foreground: clarity, forgiveness, tradition, and love.
About the Author
Bong Serrano is a proud Batangueño, hailing from the picturesque and historic province of Batangas, Philippines. His debut memoir, Batangas: My Sky and Earth, not only pays homage to his roots but also takes readers on a nostalgic journey into the heart of Filipino heritage.
Bong completed his undergraduate studies with an academic scholarship at Ateneo de Manila University and was subsequently awarded a student exchange scholarship at International Christian University in Tokyo. After dedicating several years as an international flight attendant and Japanese speaker for American Airlines, immersing himself in diverse cultures around the world, he transitioned to roles as Digital Marketing Director at both a digital marketing agency and a not-for-profit organization for men’s health in Vancouver, contributing his expertise to both organizations over a twenty-seven-year career in digital marketing.
Though Bong has called Canada home for many years, his heart remains deeply connected to Batangas, where he frequently returns to visit family and friends. He cherishes the bonds he holds dear and finds joy in sharing stories, listening to music, taking long walks along the seawall, mastering the art of cooking adobo, indulging in Asian dramas during his leisure hours, and, naturally, pursuing his passion for writing and storytelling. Bong resides in Vancouver with his life partner of over thirty years.
Bong is currently immersed in his next project, which involves writing a historical fiction. Connect with him and explore more of his work on his website at bongserrano.com.

Read-Alike Friday: What You Are Looking Is in the Library by Michiko Aoyama
What You Are Looking For Is in the Library by Michiko Aoyama
What are you looking for?
This is the famous question routinely asked by Tokyo’s most enigmatic librarian, Sayuri Komachi. Like most librarians, Komachi has read every book lining her shelves—but she also has the unique ability to read the souls of her library guests. For anyone who walks through her door, Komachi can sense exactly what they’re looking for in life and provide just the book recommendation they never knew they needed to help them find it.
Each visitor comes to her library from a different juncture in their careers and dreams, from the restless sales attendant who feels stuck at her job to the struggling working mother who longs to be a magazine editor. The conversation that they have with Sayuri Komachi—and the surprise book she lends each of them—will have life-altering consequences.
With heartwarming charm and wisdom, What You Are Looking For Is in the Library is a paean to the magic of libraries, friendship and community, perfect for anyone who has ever found themselves at an impasse in their life and in need of a little inspiration.
The Girl Who Reads on the Métro by Christine Féret-Fleury
Juliette leads a perfectly ordinary life in Paris, working a slow office job, dating a string of not-quite-right men, and fighting off melancholy. The only bright spots in her day are her metro rides across the city and the stories she dreams up about the strangers reading books across from her: the old lady, the math student, the amateur ornithologist, the woman in love, the girl who always tears up at page 247.
One morning, avoiding the office for as long as she can, Juliette finds herself on a new block, in front of a rusty gate wedged open with a book. Unable to resist, Juliette walks through, into the bizarre and enchanting lives of Soliman and his young daughter, Zaide. Before she realizes entirely what is happening, Juliette agrees to become a passeur, Soliman's name for the booksellers he hires to take stacks of used books out of his store and into the world, using their imagination and intuition to match books with readers. Suddenly, Juliette's daydreaming becomes her reality, and when Soliman asks her to move in to their store to take care of Zaide while he goes away, she has to decide if she is ready to throw herself headfirst into this new life.
Big-hearted, funny, and gloriously zany, The Girl Who Reads on the Metro is a delayed coming-of-age story about a young woman who dares to change her life, and a celebration of the power of books to unite us all.
Before the Coffee Gets Cold by Toshikazu Kawaguchi
What would you change if you could go back in time?
In a small back alley in Tokyo, there is a café which has been serving carefully brewed coffee for more than one hundred years. But this coffee shop offers its customers a unique experience: the chance to travel back in time.
In Before the Coffee Gets Cold, we meet four visitors, each of whom is hoping to make use of the café’s time-travelling offer, in order to: confront the man who left them, receive a letter from their husband whose memory has been taken by early onset Alzheimer's, to see their sister one last time, and to meet the daughter they never got the chance to know.
But the journey into the past does not come without risks: customers must sit in a particular seat, they cannot leave the café, and finally, they must return to the present before the coffee gets cold . . .
Toshikazu Kawaguchi’s beautiful, moving story explores the age-old question: what would you change if you could travel back in time? More importantly, who would you want to meet, maybe for one last time?
This is the first volume of the "Before the Coffee Gets Cold" series.

Celebrate Space Mountain's 50th Anniversary at Walt Disney World Through Sound
Space Mountain, one of Disney's most iconic attractions, is not just a thrilling roller coaster but an auditory masterpiece. Its soundscape, carefully crafted to enhance the immersive experience, is a crucial part of what makes this ride unforgettable! In here, we’ll explore the history and evolution of Space Mountain’s music across its various iterations, from Disneyland to Walt Disney World and beyond. Whether you're a die-hard Disney fan or just someone who loves the magic of themed entertainment, this deep dive into the Space Mountain soundscape will leave you ready to blast off into the cosmos! https://youtu.be/d62ll-f-tC8?si=LNySQefUjs9n5Yoc
The Origins of Space Mountain and Its Soundtrack
When Space Mountain first opened at Disneyland in 1977, it was a groundbreaking attraction. Designed as an indoor roller coaster with a futuristic space theme, it quickly became a fan favorite. However, the ride initially operated without an onboard soundtrack. It wasn’t until 1996 that music was added to Disneyland's Space Mountain, transforming the experience into an audio-visual spectacle. The addition of music was spearheaded by composer Michael Giacchino, who created a score that perfectly synchronized with the ride's twists and turns. Giacchino’s work was revolutionary; he used sensors along the track to trigger specific musical cues, ensuring that the soundtrack matched the ride's pacing regardless of variations in speed. This innovation set a new standard for theme park attractions.
Disneyland’s Space Mountain
The current soundtrack for Disneyland’s Space Mountain is an exhilarating orchestral piece composed by Giacchino. It begins with a suspenseful buildup as riders ascend the first lift hill, accompanied by ambient space sounds and subtle melodies. As the rocket plunges into darkness, the music crescendos into a thrilling symphony that mirrors every twist, turn, and drop of the coaster. During seasonal overlays like Hyperspace Mountain, inspired by Star Wars, the soundtrack shifts to incorporate iconic themes from John Williams’ legendary scores. This overlay immerses riders in an intergalactic battle, complete with sound effects like laser blasts and TIE fighter screeches.
Walt Disney World’s Space Mountain
Interestingly, Walt Disney World's Space Mountain in Florida has taken a different approach to its soundscape. Unlike its Disneyland counterpart, it does not feature onboard music during regular operation. Instead, it relies on atmospheric background music in its queue areas and exit tunnels. The queue area features ambient tracks that evoke the vastness of space, setting the mood for adventure. The Star Tunnel music is particularly beloved by fans for its ethereal tones and sense of wonder. While onboard audio is absent during the ride itself, seasonal events like Mickey’s Very Merry Christmas Party introduce temporary soundtracks to enhance the festive atmosphere.
Space Mountain Tokyo and Paris
Space Mountain attractions around the world each have unique soundscapes tailored to their themes. Tokyo Disneyland’s version originally mirrored Disneyland’s but underwent significant changes in 2006. Today, it features a more modern soundtrack that aligns with its futuristic aesthetic. Right now the ride is undergoing major changes and will be closed for the next couple of years. Be sure to check back here for all future updates! Meanwhile, Disneyland Paris offers perhaps the most dramatic variation with Star Wars Hyperspace Mountain. This version combines Giacchino’s compositions with Star Wars themes to create an adrenaline-pumping experience that feels like piloting an X-Wing fighter through space battles.
Rockin’ Space Mountain and Ghost Galaxy
Disneyland has experimented with temporary overlays that introduce new soundscapes to Space Mountain. One notable example is Rockin’ Space Mountain, which debuted in 2007 as part of Disney’s Year of a Million Dreams celebration. This overlay featured an energetic rock soundtrack by the Red Hot Chili Peppers, including remixed versions of Higher Ground. The music was synchronized with colorful projections and strobe lights for a high-energy experience unlike any other! Another popular overlay was Ghost Galaxy, introduced during Halloween seasons from 2009 to 2019. This version replaced Giacchino’s orchestral score with eerie music and haunting sound effects. The result was a spine-chilling journey through a galaxy haunted by spectral apparitions!
The Role of Music in Immersion
The soundscape of Space Mountain does more than entertain—it immerses riders in its narrative. From the moment guests enter the queue, they are enveloped in an auditory environment that builds anticipation. Whether it’s the ambient hum of spacecraft or the climactic orchestral swells during high-speed drops, every note is designed to enhance storytelling! Michael Giacchino once described his approach as composing for a movie that people ride through. This philosophy underscores how integral music is to creating emotional connections between guests and attractions!
A Galactic Symphony That Endures
Space Mountain’s soundscape is more than just background noise—it’s an essential part of what makes this attraction timeless. From Michael Giacchino’s groundbreaking compositions at Disneyland to the atmospheric queues at Walt Disney World and innovative overlays like Hyperspace Mountain and Rockin’ Space Mountain, each iteration offers something unique while staying true to its interstellar theme! For fans of Disney Parks or anyone who appreciates immersive storytelling through music, Space Mountain remains a shining example of how sound can elevate an experience from thrilling to unforgettable. So next time you board your rocket ship and hear those first few notes swell around you, remember: you’re not just riding a roller coaster—you’re embarking on a symphonic journey through space! INQUISITION 25 is at The Factory Theatre on February 22
New Post has been published on https://qnews.com.au/inquisition-25-is-at-the-factory-theatre-on-february-22/
INQUISITION 25 is at The Factory Theatre on February 22
Since 1993 INQUISITION has been the premiere kink and fetish party on the Sydney scene and 2025 marks its 25th edition after a decade of hiatus since 2015.
Sydney’s “Naked Barber” Richard Savvy still remembers his first INQUISITION.
“I had relocated to Sydney from the Gold Coast in 2004 and a friend who had recently moved here offered me a spare ticket,” Savvy recalls.
“Having never attended a large-scale fetish event before, I was intrigued. While I had previously experienced events like Hell Fire Club, Mardi Gras and Sleazeball in Sydney, INQUISITION’s unique energy and atmosphere were unparalleled.
“The attendees were dedicated kinksters, and the performances and music were unlike anything I had encountered. It was a truly transformative experience.”
The first INQUISITION party was held in May of 1993 as a fundraiser for the Sydney Leather Pride Association but concluded with its 23rd iteration due to the dissolution of that group.
Twenty-one years later, Savvy is now running the event, having resurrected the iconic party last year.
“We are thrilled to celebrate the 25th INQUISITION, marking the second year of its return after a hiatus,” Savvy tells QNews.
“INQUISITION is more than just a dance party. It’s a celebration of fetish and kink. Unlike any other event, it showcases our community’s diversity and creativity in a spectacular way.
“Since its inception in 1993, INQUISITION has consistently honoured and celebrated the talented DJs and artists within our community, a tradition that continues to this day.
“This year’s event features a stellar lineup of performers, including the talented Studio Kink crew, Gatsby Kinbaku, Billie Burnout, Mistress Tokyo, and Mark DeViate.
“The DJ lineup is arguably the best we’ve ever had, with legendary DJs like Rob Davis returning to the decks alongside Gemma, George Roussos, Sveta, Jonny Seymour from Stereogamous, Matt Vaughan, and Mark Alsop.”
This year’s party is taking over the Factory Theatre in Marrickville with two levels of dance areas pumping out deep, dark, and dirty beats.
Tickets include free coat check so that you can arrive in your street clothes and then switch into your kink outfits and dive straight into the party.
“We have a large coat check room, managed by our affiliated associations: Sydney Pup and Handlers, Sydney Dykes on Bikes, and Sydney Leather Men Inc,” Savvy says.
“A portion of ticket sales is donated to these associations to support their initiatives, including Mardi Gras floats and other events throughout the year.
“We’re excited to announce that Sydney Rubber Group will also be joining us this year, offering a Rubber Shine Station in the coat check room for rubber enthusiasts to maintain their polished look throughout the night.
“We strongly encourage attendees to wear their finest leather, rubber, or fetish gear. One of the highlights of Inquisition is the incredible array of outfits on display, making a reliable coat check essential to the party’s success.”
Savvy says he’s really looking forward to seeing Sydney’s kink community coming together at the party, where he will also be joining the performers.
“I’m excited to announce that The Naked Barber will be performing this year,” Savvy says.
“I’m eager to take the stage myself, as my last INQUISITION performance was back in 2011 at the Dome.”
INQUISITION parties often sell out so Savvy advises to book now to avoid disappointment.
“Tickets are selling fast and we have brought INQUISITION back during Sydney’s Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras so we are expecting to sell out before the event,” Savvy says. -INQUISITION is at The Factory Theatre, Marrickville on Saturday, February 22 from 6pm. To book your tickets go to www.hausofsavvy.au. QNews readers can use the discount code INQNEWS to receive $10 off the normal ticket price.

During the end of senior year, I supported one of my friends who struggled during the college admissions process and helped her navigate alternative options when she dealt with unexpected admissions decisions. To many, she would be considered an outstanding student with good grades, heavy extracurricular and community involvement, and high scores in the SAT and AP exams. In particular, she was known to be an exceptional writer, often scoring the highest in the class on essays, research papers, and timed writes. She had future career aspirations in law and wanted to pursue a career in corporate law. To everyone’s surprise, she was rejected from every college she applied to except for the University of Wisconsin, where she was waitlisted. Devastated by her decisions, she had difficulty determining what her options were. Although she faced pressure from her family and other figures to attend the University of Wisconsin because it was the only college that accepted her, she had several hesitations including out-of-state tuition, the weather, overall campus culture, and location in the Midwest. Alternatively, her dream school was UC Santa Barbara, and her other option was attending community college and transferring to UCSB. Although some of our mutual friends believed she would have been successful attending UW Madison, the conversations I had with her about what she wanted in college and what she planned to do convinced her to attend community college. Two years later, she is a political science and sociology double major at UCSB and is currently preparing for the LSAT. She agrees that attending community college and transferring was the better option and allowed her to become more prepared and eager to pursue a career in law. Ultimately, this experience allowed me to recognize the importance of friendship and how unique each specific relationship is. Everyone has their own path in life and as a friend, I should do what's necessary to help them pursue their goals rather than having them conform to a specific expectation.

Yakitori Omakase By Michelin Gourmand Chef Masahiko Kodama at The Counter at Ginza One
We experienced our own yakitori omakase last December with none other than Michelin Gourmand Chef Masahiko Kodama cooking right in front of us! It was a dining experience straight from Japan since Chef Kodama usually only cooks at his very own restaurant in Tokyo which is always fully booked. For one week only, and in collaboration with Ginza Japanese restaurants, Chef Kodama brought his mastery of yakitori from Tokyo to Manila for lucky guests at The Counter at Ginza One.
We only heard about this limited-time event a week before Chef Kodama arrived in Manila to serve his special Christmas omakase. Luckily, there were still a few seats remaining at this new intimate 12-seater restaurant in Makati which opened just a few months ago. You can find The Counter at Ginza One at the Ecoplaza Building along Chino Roces Avenue. This building used to house several embassies and visa processing centers, which we remember visiting last year when we processed our Schengen Visa, so there are also lots of pay parking slots on the upper levels.
The Counter at Ginza One offers a multi-course yakitori omakase faithful to Chef Kodama’s standards for exceptional quality. Each yakitori is prepared fresh daily using top-quality chicken that is masterfully grilled over Japanese binchōtan and seasoned with finesse.
Here, guests are introduced to the delicious depth and breadth of the humble chicken, featuring thigh, skin, heart, liver, and more like a deeply flavourful bowl of hot soba. Though chef Kodama continues to split his time between Tokyo and Manila, you can catch him at The Counter for at least one week every month where you can experience the art of yakitori, crafted and curated by a true yakitori master.
For the special Christmas omakase, Chef Kodama prepared a special 13-course yakitori set that brings the festive holiday spirit into his menu. There were two seatings for the lunch period, 12:00nn and 2:30pm. Since it was just around a week before Chef Kodama arrived, we could only book the 2:30pm time slots for ourselves.
We first saw Masahiko Kodama when he was featured in that episode of Ugly Delicious with host and celebrity chef David Chang. He enjoyed Chef Kodama’s yakitori so much, praising his technique and talent.
Our Omakase course started with the Christmas Salad which comes with chicken, mixed vegetables, and vinaigrette dressing.
The next appetizer was the Chicken Liver Pate with fresh berries and Camembert cheese. I enjoyed this one which was actually quite different and did not seem very Japanese.
Now the real yakitori dishes are starting. The Kamo Negima has duck breast and onion leeks cooked and grilled perfectly by Chef Kodama. The meat is really very tender and juicy.
Then comes the Momo or Chicken Thigh. This was one of my favorites that afternoon, especially with their signature tare sauce. It captures the essence of smoky binchotan charcoal, chicken juices, and time-honored tradition.
The Tebasaki or Chicken Wings was one I was hesitant to eat at first because I am not really a big fan of wings, but I made an exception for today. These chicken wings are cut and prepared so that they are easy to debone and eat, so I really appreciated that effort.
Guests can order a bowl of gohan or steamed Japanese white rice. If you want an additional bowl, there will be an extra charge of P160. You can also order additional servings of each of the skewers that are served for P200 per skewer.
Next on the yakitori list is the Kamo Tsukune or Duck Meatball. This was followed by the Bonjiri or Chicken Tail. My husband loved these chicken tails or chicken butts as I call them.
The Seseri or Chicken Neck is quite different from the usually yakitori here. It's a part of the chicken that we don't often encounter so it's a unique experience at The Counter at Ginza One.
The Kawa or Chicken Skin is one of the usual favorites by guests. These are chicken skin grilled into crispy bite-sized delicacies.
The next course comes with a choice for the guests. They can choose from chicken liver, heart or gizzard. These internal organs are not on the top of my list but I eventually chose the liver while my husband got the heart. These may not be for everyone, so choose wisely.
The 11th course is the Grilled Vegetables while the 12th course is the Kamo Kakesoba or Japanese Noodles in Duck Broth. This will fill you up and is a good way to finish the yakitori course.
Lastly, the final course is Kodama's Christmas Pudding which is a dessert course. This was also quite good.
We enjoyed our Christmas yakitori omakase especially with Chef Kodama personally cooking for us. For this month, you can experience Chef Kodama’s exclusive ‘Fuyu’ (winter) omakase at The Counter from January 19-26, 2025. The rates may be on the high side, but you can only get this authentic yakitori experience if you travel to Tokyo yourself. We had a wonderful afternoon with Chef Kodama right in Makati.
