Okay just hear me out
(You absolutely don’t have to agree with this, I’m just saying what I THINK)
I’m going to post the link to @austinslounge post with the timeline because I used that for help
My theory (based simply on my intuition of people & what I’ve watched, I could be very very wrong about all of this, I’ll be the first to admit if I am 😭) starts in 2023….kinda. Just stay with me while I lay out the timeline.
Tumblr media
Towards the end of the year they seemed fine, like they can still stand to be around each other and at least pretend to be in a “loving relationship”
End of 2023/beginning of 2024 Kaia starts attending more events alone around this time as well, she’s got movies and she’s getting invited places and it’s amazing for her. Everything seems great for Kaia, all the things she’s “worked so hard for” are in her reach.
It’s also notable that around this time Cindy DIDNT want Kaia to wait for Austin to settle down lol.
Then we get the infamous Dune 2 after party (sorry for the jumpscare), I think we can all agree that what Kaia did, didn’t please Austin. After that we get a month break from Kaustin and then those really bad gym pics came.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Honestly, compared to how they started the dune 2 after party, with kisses and hand holding…..this looks bad. She’s in front of him throwing the door open with no intention of opening it for him….that’s how it looks to me 🤷‍♀️.
When I read the situation I can see (humble opinion again) that the after party incident caused bad tension and by this point Kaia was kind of making her way to the top, so why keep “acting” “in love”? Why not get this break up on the roll?
I only think this because after those pictures Kaia has her palm royale premiere AND a Jimmy Fallon appearance! I mean that’s HUGE for her……except it isn’t. She goes to a few more solo events and the crickets keep chirpping. This whole time Kaia thought she bagged a W and she hadn’t. Her name was still connected to her mom, Austin, or nothing at all.
Tumblr media
Then we got these 🙄 she needed press for herself because she had more events coming up that she KNEW Austin wouldn’t be attending, just like he didn’t go to award shows & take her, just like he didn’t watch the Golden Globes with her, even though she tried to make it seem like he did. Kaia is not stupid, she’s pretty smart, she knows she needs another BIGGER name next to hers to get attention, Austin’s is perfect. If fans believe she’s with Austin or he’s with her, they eat it up and give her attention.
She had the Met Gala (which Austin didn’t go to) & another premiere after those pictures. At both events she looks like a kicked puppy. And with the Met you can pinpoint exactly when she gets sad.
While getting ready she looks fine, eyes look normal, then she walks out of the hotel………..she isn’t as popular as she thought she’d be 🥴 I need it to also be noted that after this we see the start of what we now know to be significant weight loss. In my opinion this was her relapse into ED.
instagram
At the end of May a fluff piece about Kaustin was written and not long after that, this comes out.
After this we get this 😂😂 if anybody has the link to the video please put it in the comments, but you can tell Austin was OVER IT. Like you can just tell.
Tumblr media
After this Kaia goes on a Vacation that looks a lot like a breakup trip. She was calling Camilla her one true love and using Travis to pose all seductive, as if saying “look what you lost”.
Tumblr media
Sometime after this is the first time Austin gets asked about Kaia in an interview and after that it happened a few more times, more than it had in the past years. And each time you could tell it caught Austin off guard and he was uncomfortable. Then we get the Bikeriders premiere with the separate arrivals and forced kiss that was posted WITHIN MINUTES. Austin was obviously taken aback and after that he’s seen on video dragging Kaia around like a child. Then they go their separate ways and sorta disappear, but Kaia still blesses us with her thirst traps and post-breakup feeling posts.
Tumblr media
After this we got the play date that was just hilarious tbh. @destinymoore05 THIS is the smugness lol. The video of him completely ignoring her for his fans and her DESPERATELY trying to be a star LMAO. Then the way he stares down the camera in confused amusement as she tries to be sexy and capture his attention LOL. Don’t even get me started on the phone in almost every picture 😂🤚
Tumblr media
After that was the Library Science event he went to, which correct me if I’m wrong, it was the only one. After that Kaia goes to Paris with mommy and no Austin in sight, even though so many shippers claimed he was there. Then we got the late night, still weird in my opinion, fan encounter.
Then there was the wedding Austin didn’t attend, followed by a pap walk and TWO birthday parties neither do them came to. Which is so weird for a “loving couple” lol. Event though Kaia wasn’t at Austin’s birthday celebration, they did a pap walk 3 days later.
Tumblr media
I love this pic, Kaia in her element, sucks she has to keep dragging Austin through it. After this Kaia does the whole Disney birthday trip and no Austin, but Ayo & Presley’s girlfriend do go.
Kaia has 2 premieres after this, which have traction for the NIGHT. After that she’s irrelevant again lol. She third wheels a date with Cole & Camilla before she and Austin go out ONLY AS DAMAGE CONTROL after the Marcello stunt she pulled. She showed her ass and it needed to be fixed, I find it telling that Austin pulled the mask and hat back out too. Since this they haven’t been seen together again.
Tumblr media
Interesting enough this article came out AFTER the Marcello incident and BEFORE this pap walk. Then we get sorta back to back articles, this one from Austin’s team, then another Cindy article that’s a whole 180 to what she started the year off saying.
Kaia has been to countless events by herself, from Times100 to Hollywood Next Gen. She’s going to after parties for movies directed by people she wanted to work with. She did the vogue cover, no Austin at the party despite being in the same city. Let’s not forget the Halloween party she attended, the same party Austin’s coworkers Matt Smith attended……We had the Austin stays in Mexico situation, followed by the weird thumb dude Kaia posted, and now we have the “I’ll sit on a lap, just not Santa’s” situation.
Saying all of that leads me here, so if you stuck along I appreciate it, I promise there’s payoff 😭
I THINK, the year started with them gearing up for a breakup. That’s why the Cindy article dropped and Kaia was everywhere solo for a while, pap walks included. They didn’t really need Austin anymore, Kaia “had a name” and a foot in the door. As the year went Kaia realized she didn’t have any of what she thought she did. She wasn’t important or popular and the Met Gala cemented it for her 💯. She went from clear eyes getting ready, to that brief upset on the bus, to red eyed on the red carpet, because the truth began to show itself. After that she and Austin are back “together” expect after the Dune after party I think Austin made it clear, I won’t take you to any more events. Pap walks are fine and I’ll even support you at yours, but you have to keep yourself & your paps away from mine. After that they stopped acting, no longer pretending to like each other, let alone love and stand one another. Kaia keeps trying and nothing, those pictures of them smoking were done on purpose and if I’m not mistaken an article followed not long after. She was already planting the seed that Austin was a bad egg, starting all the way back with Cindy’s first article. She goes to the Met Gala and all these events and realizes, she still needs Austin, but he’s not going. He’s over it and tired and just wanted to focus on his career in peace. My guess is Kaia tried convincing him to do more events together and he said no, because soon after that his team drops an article that bluntly states they have nothing in common, it even planted the seeds for a summer break up. Which is why we were all kind of shocked about the pap walks and premiere kiss. That break up was supposed to happen this summer, I firmly believe it, but Kaia & her family used their “power” to pressure Austin. The article even said they would if he didn’t take their daughter to the three year mark things could get ugly. So Austin settles in for the rest of the year. He’s done pretending, he won’t feed into it anymore, because just like Kaia’s been planning, he is too. He gets smug, staring at the camera, keeping contact minimum, really showing us with body language (and ig likes) that he does not like her. By then I think they were really finished which is why afterwards Kaia went on a whole post-breakup Instagram coping phase. The ONLY reason she was at the Bikeriders premiere is because Austin flirted shamelessly during the press tour, which he didn’t really do during Dune. It was definitely a statement on his end, especially if you pair it with his disinterest with Kaia in any sense when it came to the public. She forced a kiss to prove a point, but it backfire, as all her plans do. She keeps trying, wayy too hard, and Austin is eating it up. He’s happy she’s making her own trap, all he has to do is pull the cord and in all honesty Austin has the most control in this situation. (He may not be Uber rich, but his name hold weight within the movie world, if he was a bad guy he could ruin Kaia’s whole career tbh.)
Back to the theory, Kaia goes to Paris with her mom for the Olympics and some Omega bullshit. Shippers start rumors that keep Kaia’s trip relevant, Austin was NOT there, but they had to make the delusional claims that he was. After that is the wedding Austin doesn’t go to, but he does go to Canada for their vaca? That’s weird to me and no real couple would do this. He was only in Canada to talk over game plans and contracts between him and Kaia (my opinion!) What they didn’t account for was Kaia’s messy, disrespectful, slutty nights out. So damage control had to be done because Kaia can’t look bad when the breakup drops, it has to be Austin if she wants to keep come relevance. So they do a few more pap walks, they have to keep Kaia’s name trending as well as make it to that three year mark. They don’t spend their birthdays together, don’t even pretend, because by this point it’s strictly business. Austin’s going out with friends and doing things by himself for himself, by all accounts he’s free. Meanwhile Kaia keeps shoving her foot further and further in her mouth. And to make it even clearer that he’s DONE, his team drops an article about Austin outgrowing Kaia & the relationship, another very clear indication that he’s ready for this to be over. Then to combat his article, Cindy releases one, she has to tell the people her daughter isn’t boring, she’s trying to keep herself busy & interesting! And let’s not forget the Gerber article where they basically shit on Austin AND beg him to love Kaia lol. I think that came from Austin’s team. Why would the Gerber camp release an article that made them look crazy? They wouldn’t, but Austin would & could to help protect his image against these powerful leeches.
Going back to the Deuxmoi situation, I do actually think Austin said something about Kaia, but only that yeah they were still together. No breakup article is out so they have to keep the appearance up, but also, it makes Kaia look bad when she does things like get on her knees for a guy then spend 20 minutes in the bathroom alone with him, or sit on some rando’s lap. People are literally turning on Kaia before our eyes, it isn’t many, but an avalanche always starts as a snowflake. Now, it’s pretty clear they aren’t together. The last few things we’ve seen from Kaia have involved different guys and Austin is MIA. Austin can’t afford another post Vanessa break up situation. He caught so much hate and still does because of rumors and misconstrued situations. He knows that Kaia & her family can milk him for a while after the breakup and by letting Kaia bury herself it leaves Austin with solid ground to stand on after this is all done. Kaia tends to act a certain way when things don’t go her way, and right now the pattern is patterning.
Austin is smart and I’d like to hope his team has his best interest at heart. I hope they’re letting all the snow fall before letting out the yell to release the avalanche.
The Gerbers have been playing Checkers, and whole time Austin might’ve been playing Chess.
And again, I could be very very very super wrong….😭

FIC WRITER INTERVIEW
Tagged by @lamialamia
How many works do you have on AO3?
13
What’s your total AO3 word count?
423,658. Hoo boy.
What are your top 5 fics by kudos?
Fundamentally People (Good Omens (TV) Kudos: 782
The Most Dangerous Thing is to Love (Sherlock (TV) Kudos: 283
S2.7: 49:07: A De-Montage (Bridgerton (TV) Kudos: 279
The Opposite of Undercurrent (Sherlock (TV) Kudos: 275
The Force of The Interaction (Sherlock (TV) Kudos: 238
Do you respond to comments? Why or why not?
Yes and sometimes almost immediately after I get them and frequently I stop and reread them and read them aloud and tell everyone they were the best part of my day.
What’s the fic you’ve written with the angstiest ending?
I write exclusively happy endings, because I have a pathlogical need for a happy ending, and every fic I've written happened because I wanted it to exist so I could read it. That said, maybe From This Day To The Ending of The World? Because...it's still a little complicated? (Not really though, it's still A Happy Ending TM)
What’s the fic you’ve written with the happiest ending?
Uh. They're all really happy. But I think Fundamentally People was the sweetest.
Do you write crossovers?
Haven't yet!
Have you received hate on a fic?
No, never have (thank heavens)
Do you write smut? If so, what kind?
Ohhhhh yes. Looking at my fandoms, it's often the "oh no, what's happening I seem to be very attracted to you, what can that possibly mean? NOTHING AT ALL CLEARLY except we should do that more but never ever talk about and certainly not talk about FEELINGS." Sometimes it's that. Sometimes it's "ohholygodwecanbonebecauseyoulovemetoowhew." One time it was "We are in love and married but Victorian Repression so we don't quuiiiiiite know how to do sex?"
Have you ever had a fic stolen?
Not that I'm aware of.
Have you ever had a fic translated?
Yes! Or they're in process, anyway...
Have you ever co-written a fic before?
No! It would be very fun to try, though!
What’s your all-time favorite ship?
Johnlock Winnix Ineffable Husbands Brad/Nate Why would you ask someone to choose between their best beloveds?
What’s a WIP that you want to finish but don’t think you ever will?
I'm pretty good about finishing, actually. I have some ideas kicking around that I might never get to, but I don't have anything I've genuinely started that I've left undone.
What are your writing strengths?
I think I'm very good at dialogue, and decent at pacing (current fic-in-progress notwithstanding grrr). I think I capture voice pretty well.
What are your writing weaknesses?
I'm not always great at setting a scene. I tend to rush through, and I feel like I'm capable of quite lovely writing, but I'm impatient and skip over it. I'm not always great about plotting - I long to write something heavily plotted and gripping, and then I'm like...crickets.
What are your thoughts on writing dialogue in other languages in a fic?
Whelp, as somebody with one (1) language skill, I'm not great at it. On occasion, I've needed to use another language--Russian and German have come up recently, I've called upon Good Old Google Translate which is obviously not ideal, but I checked in with a couple of friends when I wasn't sure it was correct. One time I intentionally used Bad French (it was for Aziraphale, who is supposed to be bad at French, and a French-speaking reader was very upset. I explained why I did it, and it was fine, but it was pretty funny).
What was the first fandom you wrote for?
My very first fanfic was for Twelfth Night because I am a Giant Nerd.
What’s a fandom/ship you haven’t written for yet but want to?
I'm in the midst of a Gen Kill fic, so that's on its way. I want to write IronStrange! And Webgott!
What’s your favourite fic you’ve written?
I'm very proud of From This Day To The Ending of The World. It was a new form of storytelling that I'd always wanted to try, and I'm really happy with how it turned out. I'm also really pleased with The Most Dangerous Thing is to Love because it did exactly what I wanted it to do (i.e., it was the fic I wanted to read).
Wheeee tagging @jenkil @latibvles @basilone and anyone else who feels like it!

Not to keep harping on Veilguard, but...
Isn't it a little weird how we got a fuckton of (largely hella spoilery) content basically every day when it was 1,5 - 2 months to release, and then up until *checks* 9 days left it's... crickets?
I mean, I realize the voice actors are still on a strike and all, so no cast panels or interviews etc. is understandable, but... yeah. It's been dead silent after that IGN exclusive. Guess they're still in crisis management mode and haven't figured out how to put their best foot forward yet? Or something?
All in all, very strange way to promote a new piece of media, frankly.

Exclusive: Imran Khan on His Plan to Return to Power
— By Charlie Campbell | April 3, 2023 | Time Magazine
Tumblr media
Former Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan sits for a portrait in his Lahore residence on March 28. Next to Khan are tear gas canisters he says were thrown at his house. Umar Nadeem for Time Magazine
Political leaders often boast of inner steel. Imran Khan can point to three bullets dug out of his right leg. It was in November that a lone gunman opened fire on Khan during a rally, wounding the 70-year-old as well as several supporters, one fatally. “One bullet damaged a nerve so my foot is still recovering,” says the former Pakistani Prime Minister and onetime cricket icon. “I have a problem walking for too long.”
If the wound has slowed Khan, he doesn’t show it in a late-March Zoom interview. There is the same bushy mane, the easy laugh, prayer beads wrapped nonchalantly around his left wrist. But in the five years since our last conversation, something has changed. Power—or perhaps its forfeiture—has left its imprint. Following his ouster in a parliamentary no-confidence vote in April 2022, Khan has mobilized his diehard support base in a “jihad,” as he puts it, to demand snap elections, claiming he was unfairly toppled by a U.S.-sponsored plot. (The State Department has denied the allegations.)
The actual intrigue is purely Pakistani. Khan lost the backing of the country’s all-powerful military after he refused to endorse its choice to lead Pakistan’s intelligence services, known as ISI, because of his close relationship with the incumbent. When Khan belatedly greenlighted the new chief, the opposition sensed weakness and pounced with the no-confidence vote. Khan then took his outrage to the streets, with rallies crisscrossing the nation for months.
Tumblr media
Photograph by Umar Nadeem for Time Magazine
“Imran Khan can communicate with all strata of society on their level,” says Shaheena Bhatti, 63, a professor of literature in Rawalpindi. “The other politicians are … not going to do anything for the country because they’re only in it for themselves.”
The November attack on Khan’s life only intensified the burning sense of injustice in members of his Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf party, or PTI, who have since clashed with police in escalating street battles involving slingshots and tear gas. Although an avowed religious fanatic was arrested for the shooting, Khan continues to accuse an assortment of rival politicians of pulling the strings: incumbent Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif—brother of Khan’s longtime nemesis, former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif—as well as Interior Minister Rana Sanaullah and Major General Faisal Naseer. (All have denied the accusation.)
In addition to bullets, Khan has also been hit by charges—143 over the past 11 months, by his count, including corruption, sedition, blasphemy, and terrorism—which he claims have been concocted in an attempt to disqualify him from politics. After Sharif’s cabinet declared on March 20 that the PTI was “a gang of militants” whose “enmity against the state” could not be tolerated, police arrested hundreds of Khan supporters in raids.
“Either Imran Khan exists or we do,” Interior Minister Sanaullah said on March 26.
Pakistan sometimes seems to reside on a precipice. Its current political instability comes amid devastating floods, runaway inflation, and resurgent cross-border terrorist attacks from neighboring Afghanistan that together threaten the fabric of the nation of 230 million. It’s a country where rape and corruption are rife, and the economy hinges on unlocking a stalled IMF bailout, Pakistan’s 22nd since independence in 1947. Inflation soared in March to 47% year-over-year; the prices of staples such as onions rose by 228%, wheat by 120%, and cooking gas by 108%. Over the same period, the rupee has plummeted by 54%.
“Ten years ago, I earned 10,000 rupees a month [$100] and I wasn’t distressed,” says Muhammad Ghazanfer, a groundsman and gardener in Rawalpindi. “With this present wave of inflation, even though I now earn 25,000 [$90 today] I can’t make ends meet.” The world’s fifth most populous country has only $4.6 billion in foreign reserves—$20 per citizen. “If they default, and they can’t get oil, companies go bust, and people don’t have jobs, you would say this is a country ripe for a Bolshevik revolution,” says Cameron Munter, a former U.S. ambassador to Pakistan.

“Our economy has gone into a tailspin,” says Khan. “We now have the worst economic indicators in our history.” The situation threatens to send the nuclear-armed country deeper into China’s orbit. Yet sympathy is slim in a West put off by Khan’s years of anti-American bluster and cozying up to autocrats and extremists, including the Taliban. He calls autocratic Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan “my brother” and visited Russian President Vladimir Putin in Moscow on the eve of the Ukraine invasion, remarking on “so much excitement.” Khan can both repeatedly declare Osama bin Laden a “martyr” and praise Beijing’s confinement of China’s Uighur Muslim minority. He has obsessed on Joe Biden’s failure to call him after entering the White House. “He’s someone that is imbued with this incredibly strong sense of grievance,” says Michael Kugelman, the deputy director of the Asia Program at the Woodrow Wilson Center.
Yet Khan can legitimately claim to have democracy on his side, with poll numbers suggesting he is a shoo-in to return to power if the elections he demands happen. “His popularity has skyrocketed,” says Samina Yasmeen, director of the Centre for Muslim States and Societies at the University of Western Australia. “No matter what he says, even if it’s irrational, the reality is that people are angry and taken by his message.”
“Imran Khan is the best bet we have right now,” says Osama Rehman, 50, a telecommunications engineer in Islamabad. “If [he] is arrested or disqualified, people will come out onto the street.”
The state appears to flirt with the idea. Police raids on Khan’s home in the Punjab province capital of Lahore in early March left him choking on tear gas, he says, as supporters brandishing sticks battled police in riot gear before makeshift barricades of sandbags and iron rods. “This sort of crackdown has never taken place in Pakistan,” says Khan. “I don’t know even if it was as bad under martial law.”
After Khan left his compound to appear in court on March 18, traveling in an armored SUV strewn with flower petals and flanked by bodyguards, the police swooped in while his wife was home, he says, beating up servants and hauling the family cook off to jail. He claims another assassination attempt awaited inside the Islamabad Judicial Complex, which was “taken over by the intelligence agencies and paramilitary.”
Tumblr media
Police arrested 61 supporters of former Prime Minister Imran Khan during a search operation near Khan’s residence, in Lahore, Pakistan, on March 18, 2023. K.M. Chaudary—AP
The confrontation could remain in the streets indefinitely. Prime Minister Sharif has rejected Khan’s demand for a snap election, saying polls would be held as scheduled in the fall. But “every narrative is being built up [for the government] to justify postponing the elections,” says Yasmeen. On March 22, Pakistan’s Election Commission delayed local balloting in Punjab, the country’s most populous province, from April 30 until Oct. 8.
“Political stability in Pakistan comes through elections,” Khan points out. “That is the starting point for economic recovery.” From the U.S. perspective, he may be far from the ideal choice to helm an impoverished, insurgency-racked Islamic state. But is he the only person that can hold the country together?
“Never has one man scared the establishment … as much as right now,” says Khan. “They worry about how to keep me out; the people how to get me back in.”
It’s indicative of Pakistan’s malaise that its most popular politician in decades sits barricaded at home. But the nation has always been beyond comparison—a wedge of South Asia that begins in the shimmering Arabian Gulf and ascends to its Himalayan heights. It’s the world’s largest Islamic state, though governed for half its history by men in olive-green uniforms, who continue to act as ultimate arbiters of power.
The only boy of five children, Khan was born Oct. 5, 1952 to an affluent Pashtun family in Lahore. He studied politics, philosophy, and economics at Oxford University, and it was in the U.K. that he first played cricket for Pakistan, at age 18. Britain’s sodden terrain also provided the backdrop to his political awakening.
“When I arrived in England our country had been ruled by a military dictator for 10 years; the powerful had one law, the others were basically not free human beings,” he says. “Rule of law actually liberates human beings, liberates potential. This was what I discovered.”
Tumblr media
Khan in his Lahore residence on March 28. Umar Nadeem for Time Magazine
On the cricket pitch, Khan was a talisman who knitted together mercurial talents and journeymen into a cohesive whole, a team that overcame extraordinary odds to famously lift the Cricket World Cup in 1992. There were glimpses of these qualities when Khan rose to become Prime Minister: running on an anti-graft ticket, he fused a disparate band of students and workers, Islamic hard-liners, and the nation’s powerful military to derail the Sharif political juggernaut. His crowning achievement remains the Shaukat Khanum Cancer Hospital in Lahore, which he opened in 1994 in memory of his mother, who succumbed to the disease. It is the largest cancer hospital serving Pakistan’s impoverished, boosting Khan’s administrative credentials.
Khan spent 22 years in the political wilderness before his 2018 election triumph. But once in power, the self-styled bold reformer turned unnervingly divisive. Opposition is easier than government, and Khan found himself bereft of ideas and besieged by unsavory partners, even kowtowing to the now-banned far-right party Tehreek-e-Labbaik Pakistan despite its support for the extrajudicial killing of alleged blasphemers. There were some successes: Pakistan received praise for its handling of the pandemic, with deaths per capita just a third that of neighboring India. His “Ten Billion Tree Tsunami” reforestation drive was popular, as was the 2019 return of international test cricket, the most prestigious form of the game, following a terrorist attack on the Sri Lankan team and a decade-long hiatus.
Khan’s private life has rarely been out of the headlines. His first wife was British journalist and society heiress Jemima Khan, née Goldsmith, a close friend of Diana, Princess of Wales. She converted to Islam for their wedding, though the pair divorced in 2004 after nine years of marriage, and her family’s Jewish heritage was political dynamite. (The couple’s two sons live in London.) Khan’s second marriage to British-Pakistani journalist Reham Khan lasted nine months. According to a 1997 California court ruling, Khan also has one child, a daughter, born out of wedlock, and he’s struggled to quash gossip of several more. In 2018, six months before he took office, he married his current wife, Bushra Bibi Khan, a religious conservative who is believed to be the only Pakistan First Lady to wear the full-face niqab shawl in public.
Tumblr media
Khan, left, lifts elder son Suleman while his ex-wife Jemima carries younger son Qasim during a march towards the U.N. offices in Islamabad in 1999. The Khans led some 100 demonstrators in an anti-Russian rally protesting against attacks in Chechnya. Reuters
It all fed Khan’s legend: the debonair playboy who grew devout; the privileged son who rails against the corrupt; the humanist who stands with the bloodthirsty. His youth was spent carousing with supermodels in London’s trendiest nightspots. But his politics has hardened as his handsome features have lined and leathered. He provoked outrage when in August 2021 he said the Taliban had “broken the shackles of slavery” by taking back power (he insists to TIME he was “taken out of context”) and has made various comments criticized as misogynistic. When asked about the drivers of sexual violence in Pakistan, he said, “If a woman is wearing very few clothes, it will have an impact on the men, unless they’re robots.” Khan has refused to condemn Putin’s invasion, insisting, like China, on remaining “neutral” and deflecting uncomfortable questions onto supposed double standards regarding India’s inroads into disputed Kashmir. “Morality in foreign policy is reserved for powerful countries,” he says with a shrug.

At the same time, Khan’s ideological flexibility has not stretched to compromises with opponents. He claims it was the military’s unwillingness to go after Pakistan’s influential “two families”—those of Sharif and the Bhutto clan of former Prime Ministers Zulfikar and Benazir—for alleged corruption that caused his relationship with the generals to fray. “If the ruling elite plunders your country and siphons off money, and you cannot hold them accountable, then that means there is no rule of law,” he says.
Yet analysts say that it was Khan’s relentless taunting of the U.S. that torpedoed his relationship with the military, which remains much more interested in retaining good relations with Washington. To journalists and supporters, he has accused the U.S. of imposing a “master-slave” relationship on Pakistan and of using it like “tissue paper.” To TIME, he insists that “criticizing U.S. foreign policy does not make you anti-American.” Still, by 2022, the generals no longer had his back. The common perception among Pakistan watchers is that Khan’s fleeting political success was owed to a Faustian pact with the nation’s military and extremist groups that shepherded his election victory and he is now reaping the whirlwind.

He appears to relish in the perceived injustice, the walls closing in. On March 25, Khan addressed thousands of supporters in central Lahore from a bulletproof box above a green-and-red flag with the initials of his PTI emblazoned on a cricket bat—once Khan’s weapon of choice, though now he wields words with similar potency.
“I know you have decided you wouldn’t allow Imran Khan back in power,” he said. “That’s fine with me. But do you have a plan or know how to get the country out of the current crisis?”
If Pakistan’s economic woes are reaching a new nadir, the trajectory was established during Khan’s term. A revolving door of Finance Ministers was compounded by bowing to hardliners. (After appointing renowned Princeton economist Atif Mian as an adviser, Khan fired him just days later owing to a backlash from Islamists because Mian is an Ahmadi, a sect of Islam they consider heretics.) In 2018, Khan pledged not to follow previous administrations’ “begging bowl” tactics of foreign borrowing, in order to end Pakistan’s cycle of debt. But less than a year later, he struck a deal with the IMF to cut social and development spending while raising taxes in exchange for a $6 billion loan. Mismanagement exacerbated global headwinds from the pandemic and soaring oil prices.
Meanwhile, little was done to address Pakistan’s fundamental structural issues: few people pay tax, least of all the feudal landowners who control traditional low-added-value industries like sugar farms, textile mills, and agricultural interests while wielding huge political-patronage networks stemming from their workers’ votes. In 2021, only 2.5 million Pakistanis filed tax returns—less than 1% of the adult population. “People don’t pay tax, especially the rich elite,” says Khan. “They just siphon out money and launder it abroad.”
Instead, Pakistan has relied on foreign money to balance a budget and provide government services. The U.S. funneled nearly $78.3 billion to Pakistan from 1948 to 2016. But in 2018, President Trump ended the $300 million security assistance that the U.S. provided annually. Now Pakistan must shop around for new benefactors—chiefly Saudi Arabia, Russia, and China. When Khan visited Putin last February, it was to arrange cheap oil and wheat imports and discuss the $2.5 billion Pakistan Stream gas pipeline, which Moscow wants to build between Karachi and Kasur. More recently, China has stepped in. In early March, the Industrial and Commercial Bank of China approved a $1.3 billion loan rollover—a fiscal bandaid for a gaping wound.

But if Khan recognized the problem, he did little to solve it. After his election in 2018, he was in an uncommonly strong position with the backing of the military and progressives, as well as the tolerance of the Islamists. Now, with all the bad blood and open warfare among these factions, even if he claws his way back, “he’ll be in a weaker position to actually effect any reforms,” says Munter, the former U.S. ambassador, “if he had any reforms to begin with.”
When asked for his step-by-step plan to get Pakistan back on track, Khan is light on details. After elections, he says that a “completely new social contract” is required to enshrine power in political institutions, rather than the military. If the army chief “didn’t think corruption was that big a deal, then nothing happened,” Khan complains. “I was helpless.” But the path to this utopia remains murky. Asked how he plans to turn his much trumpeted Islamic Welfare State ideal into a reality, Khan talks about Medina under the Prophet and the social conscience of Northern Europeans. “Scandinavia is probably far closer to the Islamic ideal than any of the Muslim countries.”
But the military looms large in Pakistan partly because national security is a perennial issue. Many assumed that the newly returned Taliban would stamp out all cross-border attacks from Afghanistan. But Pakistan recorded the second largest increase in terrorism-related deaths worldwide in 2022, up 120% year-over-year. “It was Khan who was pushing for talks with [the Taliban] at all costs,” says Kugelman, of the Woodrow Wilson Center. “That embrace is now experiencing significant levels of blowback.”
That Pakistan is moving away from the U.S. and closer to Russia and China is a moot point; the bigger question is who actually wins from embracing Pakistan. The $65 billion China-Pakistan Economic Corridor was supposed to be the crown jewel in President Xi Jinping’s signature Belt and Road Initiative, linking China via roads, rail and pipeline to the Arabian Sea. But Gwadar Port is rusting and suicide bombers are taking aim at buses filled with Chinese workers. Loans are more regularly defaulted than paid. Today, even Iran looks like a more stable partner.
Ultimately, competition with Beijing defines American foreign policy today, meaning Washington prioritizes relations with Pakistan’s archnemesis India, which is a key partner in the Biden Administration’s Indo-Pacific Strategy to contain China. Toward that imperative, the White House turns a blind eye even to New Delhi’s continued close relationship with Putin. The U.S. kinship with India may mean Pakistan was always destined to move closer to China. But after the U.S. pulled out of Afghanistan, Pakistan is not the strategic lynchpin it once claimed to be—and memories are hardly fond; Pakistan secretly invested heavily in the Taliban. “Lots of Americans in Washington say we lost the war in Afghanistan because the Pakistanis stabbed us in the back,” says Munter.
What happens next? Many in Khan’s PTI suspect the current government may declare their party a terrorist organization or otherwise ban it from politics. Others believe that Pakistan’s escalating economic, political, and security turmoil may be used as grounds to postpone October’s general election. Ultimately, all sides are using the tools at their disposal to prevent their own demise: Khan wields popular protest and the banner of democracy; the government has the courts and security apparatus. Caught between the two, the people flounder. “There are no heroes here,” says Kugelman. “The entire political class and the military are to blame for the very troubled state the country finds itself in now.”
It’s a crisis that Khan still claims can be solved by elections, despite his broken relationship with the military. “The same people who tried to kill me are still sitting in power,” he says. “And they are petrified that if I got back [in] they would be held accountable. So they’re more dangerous.”

'Been shuffled too much but never said no. That's my problem'
Tumblr media
All eyes will be on Mehidy Hasan Miraz to fill the vacuum left by the renowned all-rounder, Shakib Al Hasan, as he is not participating in the Champions Trophy. While it is unclear if he will bat at number four, Mehidy is adamant that he wants a permanent spot in Bangladesh's 50-over lineup.
Mehidy discusses expectations, captaincy, and his preferred batting position in an exclusive conversation with Skybets.
Excerpts from the interview:
Are you feeling the pressure of the Champions Trophy?
It would be difficult for all of us because we are playing for the Champions Trophy after eight years. When I participated in the campaign (in 2017), I was only beginning to play cricket internationally. Our team at the time included several seasoned players. This time, there will be a few of them, but we must fulfill the duty that was formerly held by the elders. Although we have a lot of responsibilities, we are not under any pressure. Since I have played international cricket for seven to eight years now, I know how a situation unfolds. I just have to focus now. We don't have much time. The BPL recently completed. We didn't get the chance (to train in this style), and there is also a problem of getting rest. Hopefully, though, the experience will be useful.
Do you feel the pressure of replacing Shakib?
When Shakib bhai was here, I performed. I will have greater responsibility and be held to higher standards when it comes to bowling and batting. That is what the team wants me to do. Sincerely, I make an effort to assist both areas as needed by the team. The results may vary from time to time for various reasons, but occasionally it also works. It is critical that each player assume accountability. I play a crucial function. I will do everything in my power. However, perhaps when Shakib bhai was here, I was not under as much pressure. Perhaps it is why I performed well. Since I can't meet the higher standards, I might now face additional jeering. Additionally, if I can perform, I will feel fantastic. I'll do my best for the nation. It takes time to build expectations. Perhaps by performing, I was able to instill it in individuals. There is no way to go back. I hope I can give my 100%.
Can you tell us your favorite batting position?
Look, I do not believe that any player in the Bangladeshi team has been moved about this much like I have. The number of tests conducted on me... Few players, in my opinion, have dealt with that. Do you not believe that I ought to settle for a particular job? The squad will benefit and I will be able to perform successfully. As you can see from the West Indies tour, we put up a strong showing on the scoreboard even though we most likely lost the series. We achieved 290, or 300+. Both the team and I benefited from it. We were unable to prevail on that particular problem.
Regarding having a constant batting position, do you think you are unlucky?
The management's choice is more important than chance. But since I never said "no" for the team's benefit, I am also to blame. If more tests are conducted, I suppose neither the team nor I will benefit.
Do you feel number four in ODIs suits you?
I performed well during the four innings, scoring three scores of 70 or higher. Yes, I may occasionally fail. However, that does not preclude me from succeeding there. Everywhere I have been asked to play, I have proven myself. I believe a choice needs to be made now, and I have informed management that it would likely be best to assign me to a particular role.
Since I will have time there, I would say that number four will be beneficial for me. I am capable of playing that position. Mushfiqur bhai, who played at number four for a while, was a big help to me. He has scored a lot of runs in his seven or eight years as a batsman for Bangladesh, making him one of the best in that position. He and I have discussed how to play there. I believe I have adapted nicely there.
You did well at seven or eight also in ODIs...
I have spent the last seven or eight years playing at number eight. When Shakib bhai was not playing, I most likely played number five for one to one and a half years. I am aware of the pattern there and how to complete a match. I defeated India in one of my few victories at number eight. At number eight, I partnered with Afif (against Afghanistan). There, play is played differently. There is no labor to be done at number eight unless you are in danger, in which case you will have support. It is not like I want it, thus I will not get it if I can embellish the order. The team management has made the decision. A player must be given an opportunity. I can still succeed there even if I lose two or three matches up at the order. To be stable in a position, you must allow time.
Do you think your willingness to accept any role has contributed to your current situation?
I am never able to say no. My issue is that. I have no idea why that occurs. This is true not just in my cricketing life but also in my personal life. I am unable to say no. It is now time to make a choice. I have already had conversations with the President, my coach, and my captain. I expressed my viewpoint to them. They will either consider it or provide feedback right away.
Some believe there's a competition between you and Najmul Hossain for the captaincy. Do you see it that way?
Our relationship dates back to our U-15 days. He played for me for seven or eight years in addition to one U-19 World Cup. It is all about a team game, but someone has to be the "captain" to march all over the field. Furthermore, nothing is larger than the nation. I have to respect his position even though he is a buddy of mine. In the changing room, Tamim bhai said something that I found endearing. In particular, he informed me that everyone wants to be captain because it is a distinct setting and experience, but everyone should also respect the captain's role. There should not be any animosity, regardless of disagreement or anything else. He most likely shared this based on his personal experience. That was significant since Shanto and I had a close friendship and mutual understanding. This is a complete misunderstanding. He assisted me when I was his captain.
How difficult will it be for spinners in the Champions Trophy?
Very challenging for spinners, and I need to prepare mentally in advance. Pakistan will be really difficult. However, it will assist that I have expertise playing Tests in Rawalpindi. There, I gained some insight on the wicket's behavior. I have also performed in Dubai before. I hope these will be useful.
What kind of mindset do you carry when you bowl in ODIs? A separate mental game is ODI. Now you need to know what the batter wants to do. There are moments when you must launch an attack and other times when you must adopt a defensive posture. You will remain stuck if you maintain an aggressive mindset all the time. The field or bowl must be set up based on the requirements of the situation. Making a choice is crucial. If you can make the right choice at the appropriate moment, you will succeed. It is another matter entirely whether you win or lose.

[ad_1] Jalal Saxena. Image: Instagram. Kerala’s remarkable journey in the Ranji Trophy this season has been nothing short of extraordinary, and one of the key figures in their success has been seasoned all-rounder Jalaj Saxena, who has bagged 34 wickets at an average of 16 while scoring 271 runs with the bat – including a crucial 67 in the quarter-final. In an exclusive interview with RevSportz, Saxena reflects on Kerala’s historic run to the semi-finals, the thrilling quarter-final clash against Jammu and Kashmir, and the spirit that has driven him to push himself on the field. He also opened up about not getting picked for the Indian team despite scoring close to 7000 First-Class runs and picking up almost 500 wickets. Here are the excerpts: Q: A sensational season for Kerala so far. Semi-finals of Ranji Trophy. How has the journey been this season? Jalaj Saxena: It’s has been an exceptional season for us. We are all very happy. The credit goes to each and every member of the team, be it a player or a support staff or the coaching staff, administration. So, kudos to everyone. We have been doing an exceptional job on the field. I hope that we create history this time. Q: Take us through that quarter-final against Jammu and Kashmir. A one-run lead in the first innings and then you guys had to bat it out to draw and progress. Saxena: It was a crazy match. That’s the beauty of Test [style] cricket, that you have two chances. And the kind of excitement we had in those two innings was exceptional. Salman (Nizar) played some brilliant innings. In both the innings, he has played exceptionally well. Based on that 81-run last-wicket partnership between Salman and Basil Thampi, I will tell you one secret. When we were 200 for 9 and the day got over, Amay Khurasiya sent us a message saying let’s meet at the meeting room at 7 o’clock in the evening. So, we went there. We were all feeling down that we have to score 80 more runs and we were in a tough situation. He showed us an innings of Michael Hussey and Glenn McGrath where they contributed close to 100 runs for Australia versus South Africa. So, we kept on watching that innings for like 30-40 minutes. And then he said that if they can do that, we can also do that. And in the morning, exactly the same thing happened. You know, Salman was playing as if he is Hussey, and Basil was playing as if he was McGrath. And we did it. It was something exceptional. We all enjoyed it thoroughly. Q: Amey Khurasiya was sending some chits and calculations when you were batting. What was that all about? Saxena: Those were all calculations. I won’t be able to talk much about those things since it’s an internal part of the team. But he is a very well-educated coach, has some great innovative ideas as well. And the results are obviously there. I am 200 per cent sure that this Kerala team is one of the most hard-working teams just because of the coach. He is making sure that each and every player is working hard. He is providing those facilities to each and every player. That is very important. That change is quite visible this season. Jalaj Saxena in action (PC: Insta) Q: Season after season, you come and pick up wickets for fun, score runs in plenty. What is the secret? Saxena: I don’t want to jinx it. I think it’s all about the hard work. It’s all about the determination and the grit to take wickets. Every season, I try to become better. I try to learn a few things. If you are playing professional cricket, you have to be there. You have to learn new things every year. You have to work on your bowling. So, the process is the same every day. Every day, every season, off-season also I am working very hard towards my bowling, towards my fitness. This consistency and the hard work I am putting in, I think the result is just the outcome of the process. Q: Does it hurt that players younger than you, maybe less skilful than you, with lesser accolades than you in the domestic circuit have made their respective debuts for India?
Saxena: I don’t know anyone who is less talented than me. Whoever has played for India, they are exceptionally talented. I am very happy for them. There are no grudges. There is nothing against them. I am not hurt at all. Yes, there was a phase when I was expecting an India call. Yes, you know, phases come in your life. But then, right now, I am in that zone where I am enjoying my cricket. I am hopeful that one day I will play for the country. And because of that hope, because of that motivation, I can work really hard in the off-season. I can think about learning new things. I am using that as a motivation. But I don’t have any grudges nor am I hurt. I am enjoying my cricket thoroughly and I am really looking forward to these games. Q: Can you talk more about those phases where you expected that India call-up? Saxena: I think I am a human being. When I was young, I was performing, so naturally as a human being, you expect things. But later on, with age, I realised that there are things which you cannot control. Things which are uncontrollable, you should not think about. You should focus on the things which are controllable, which are in your hands. And that is process, that is your hard work, that is your grit, that is your positivity. Those things only you can work on. Later on, as you grow, you read books, you talk to people. So they teach you, they tell you what is more important in life. To be happy, to be content is far, far better than just being hurt and feeling that you are not getting selected. People will come to you and say that you should have been there. But I think that phase is gone. I am still hopeful that I will play for India. But I am very happy and very content. I am enjoying my cricket. Q: Have you had any incidents like that where you have just walked up to a selector attending domestic games and asked why you aren’t getting picked? Saxena: I think this is not my job. My job is to play cricket. And it is not fair if I go to a selector and ask why I am not there. It is not what a cricketer should do. A cricketer’s job is to go into the field, express himself and play cricket. And the rest, it is up to the selector. That is their job to decide what team they want. And I am pretty sure that every selector, if they select a team, there has to be a reason behind it. Every selector has their own opinion. I really respect that. I have never had such an incident where I went to a selector and asked why. Q: Throughout your career, has there been any sort of communication from the selectors, past or present, explaining why you aren’t getting picked? Saxena: No, nothing like that. Nothing like that. Because as a player, you just need to focus on your things. You can’t expect that everybody will come to you and give you sympathy. I don’t want sympathy. I am very happy and I am very content and I am enjoying this beautiful game. So, I don’t have any grudges. Saxena: People keep changing. So, Jalaj Saxena, when he was 19 years old, he was a different person. Jalaj Saxena, when he was 25, was different. Jalaj Saxena, when I see myself now, I am a different person. So, you know, there were phases in my life where I was totally into cricket. I was spending 10 hours in the ground. I was doing training and everything. Right now, I am in a phase where I am enjoying my cricket with my teammates. I am not only working on my skills, I am also trying to help the other players as well. Trying to motivate them, trying to give whatever little I know about my cricket or whatever little I have experiences in my cricket. So, I am trying to share these experiences with my fellow cricketers. My role has changed and I am thoroughly enjoying that role also.
It’s like cricket has given so much to me. Now, it’s payback time. I am trying to give something to other players also. I am trying to share my experience with them. So, it’s a beautiful feeling. As a person also, I think I am evolving. When I was young, I was short-tempered. Even in the field, there were instances where there was a rush of blood. These things happen when you want to perform and you are not performing. So, I was like, why am I not performing? I have to. I used to get angry at myself, that why am I not performing? I should do better. Right now, I am controlling my emotions also. So, I have learnt a lot in these last 20 years. As a human being, I think I am evolving. I have picked up many hobbies as well. I started travelling. I really love to travel. I do yoga a lot. I do meditation. I started reading a few books also. So, yes, as a person also, I think I am evolving. Photography is also my hobby. I think India is very beautiful. We should explore India. When I started travelling, I didn’t realise that India is so beautiful. When I started travelling, I was like, wow, India is so beautiful. There are so many hidden places which we have never explored or which we have never heard of. You meet new people, you explore places, you learn from the culture. So, again, I think everyone should travel and it teaches you a lot. I definitely feel that every place has its own energy and you can really connect to that. Especially mountains. When I go to the mountains, I feel that there is some positivity in those mountains. I really enjoy doing my meditation and my yoga and training also. In the off-season, I go to the mountains. I try to train myself. I try to trek. Mountains are a great place to train because the weather is pretty cool. And because of the low oxygen level, you can train really well. So, I try to go there for a month or so and I train really hard there in the mountains. Q: You talked about the dream of playing for India still being alive. That motivates you. But at the age of 38, do you think it is realistic? Saxena: It’s not realistic at all. But at the same time, it’s not my job to think that it’s realistic or not. As I said, it’s not my job to think that I should get picked. It’s not my job to say that I should not get picked. My job is to motivate myself. My job is to work hard and prepare myself for professional cricket. And to do that, my process when I was young was to dream of playing for the country. And that was the reason I was doing well, I think. That was the reason I was putting in my efforts. The process is still the same. I’m dreaming of playing for the country and I’m working very hard. And every year, I’m learning new things and I’m trying to develop my game. The process is the same. So, as I said, it’s not my job to think why I didn’t get picked. Similarly, it’s not my job to say that I should not be picked. My job is to just follow the process Q: Recently we saw the likes of Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma coming back to Ranji Trophy among all other international stars. What is the importance of grinding it out in domestic circuit? Saxena: Domestic cricket is very important for Indian cricket. If you see all these legends, all the international stars which we are producing, they are all coming from the grassroot levels. It’s all because of the structure we have in India and the kind of domestic cricket we have in India. It starts from under-14 cricket to Ranji Trophy, Irani Cup, Duleep Trophy. We have a beautiful structure in India and it plays a huge and vital role to produce international stars and great players. I don’t think the charm is fading away. I think the domestic cricket, Ranji Trophy especially, is still relevant for Indian cricket. And Virat, Rohit, their playing Ranji Trophy shows that they are giving importance to Ranji Trophy and domestic cricket, which is a very beautiful sight. And I am sure that this will motivate youngsters to do well. TRAILBLAZERS 3.0 Q: Any advice that you would want to give to young cricketers?
Saxena: There is no substitute for hard work. This is what I will tell all the youngsters that keep working hard. You can make it. Q: Is the semi-final against Gujarat the most important game for Kerala? Saxena: Obviously, it is a very important game for us. We have worked really hard for this game, for this season. God has been very kind that we are playing this tournament and this semi-final match. We have only played one semi-final till now, Kerala. And this is the second time we have qualified for the semi. It is a very big thing and we all are very excited about it. We all are working hard, and being a professional cricketer, I can tell you that we are doing all the things right. We are putting in our hard work, our discipline. We are very positive and as I said, it is a very important game for us. So, hopefully, we will do well and create history. It is an important moment for us. Q: What are the three best memories from your cricketing career? Saxena: One very special moment for me was when I shared the dressing room with Sachin Tendulkar. I was playing for Mumbai Indians and that was my first season for Mumbai Indians and we won the trophy. I clicked a picture with Sachin sir and that was a very precious moment for me. When you see Sachin Tendulkar, you don’t talk much. You just keep looking at him and you are like, what a player he is. You just observe him. You don’t talk to him. You just observe him. I was young and for me, he was God. I was just observing him. When I clicked the picture with him, holding the trophy was something very special. That was a moment which I will always cherish. I played a game against North Zone in Deodhar Trophy long back. Virat was also there. So, I bowled to him and that was also very special because he is a player. After Sachin, I think he is the most impactful player. He changed Indian cricket and we admire Virat a lot. I admire Virat a lot. He changed Indian cricket. He changed the dynamics of Indian cricket. He served Indian cricket for a very long time. So, it was a big moment for me too. I was bowling to Virat Kohli in a domestic match. It was a very memorable moment for me. I would say my first India A match in West Indies. We were playing against West Indies A in West Indies. There were a lot of talks that Jalaj got selected and he didn’t do well in domestic cricket and he still got picked for India A. I was young and I wanted to prove myself. I went there on the field. I did well in that tour. So, that tour was very special. I played with many players. Like all the international players who are right now in Indian cricket. Rohit [Sharma] was there. [Cheteshwar] Pujara was there. Bhuvi [Bhuvneshwar Kumar] was there. So, all these players who have been playing, who have been in the Indian team. They were all there. I shared the dressing room with all these players. And I did well in that tournament. It was something very beautiful for me. Also Read: Spin or Pace?
