“Before & After” California Home Renovation

Wendy Blackband and Rachel Azzolina of the Blackband Design team (previously featured here – a house tour you really can’t miss!) brought this home down to the studs and fully remodeled it into a modern Mediterranean open floor plan with hotel amenities. Their focus was bringing in warmth and comfort while creating additions and new layouts to best suit the homeowners’ lifestyle – including their two daughters Annie and Abbey (Golden Retrievers). Speaking for the pups, their favorite home features would most likely be the built-in food and water dish station in the kitchen island and their under-staircase sleeping nook in the master bedroom complete with a miniature headboard to match their parents. The homeowners recognized the value of investing in quality and luxurious details that they will forever appreciate in their dream home.

Can you believe this is the same house? The older kitchen felt dark and the “old Mediterranean” style had a heavy feel to it.

New Ideas

This home is located in a neighborhood where the houses feature Mediterranean-inspired architecture. It was important for the designers to respect the architectural details but they also wanted to reinvent this style and give it a more modern feel. This modern Mediterranean kitchen is a great example of that.

Customizing a pet food station in your kitchen island isn’t only a brilliant idea but it also very functional. It’s easy to keep the dogs’ food station fresh and cleaner with a pot filler and by being so close to a sink and the dishwasher.

The space had good bones but everything felt too heavy and outdated with the faux plaster walls and these ugly draperies… sorry.

2 Homes in Mediterranean Rustic Chic

Two home tours from the Med take us on an voyage of rustic decor discovery. Where rough stone and wood crash up against marble and sumptuous upholstery. At first glance, the large open plan homes with their high wooden rafters and exposed rustic stone appear as high-end American ranch houses. However, linear sofas, contemporary end tables and accent chairs swing the interiors in a more European direction. The colour palette throughout is a quietly relaxed play on taupe, with bolder tan elements in the first home, and an airy beach vibe in the second.

Visualizer: Angelina Alekseeva Our first home is an Italian villa in the Umbria region. An abundance of lush green indoor house plants bring a splash of vibrancy and organic form to the subdued surroundings.

An L-shaped modern sofa effectively divides the open plan living area, separating the lounge space from the dining room. The modern winged reading chair and matching footstool have been selected in a contrasting tan colour for added interest, under the spotlight of a chrome standing lamp. In the centre, a chunky round wooden coffee table pulls the contemporary notes back into the rustic vibe. Decorative vases keep the rustic table looking chic.

Sleek ice white units make up the kitchen, coupled with a freestanding kitchen island. At the central island, two kitchen bar stools have been added in a more beachy design. Woven seats over wooden legs aren’t the obvious choice to tie in with a minimalistic kitchen design but the selection compliments the natural stone wall perfectly.

A white range cooker blends in with the white kitchen units.

Diners have a view of the kitchen from modern dining chairs seated at a chunky wooden table. A flurry of dining pendant lights anchor the eating area in the open plan space.

A fireplace sits behind the dining table, sending a cozy glow of firelight through the wine glasses.

In the master bedroom, an ensuite bathroom extends directly into the sleeping and dressing areas.

The bed is an upholstered design, with an oversized headboard that extends behind a table decorated by a unique bedside lamp. On the opposite side to the Snoopy Lamp, further ambience is provided by a slimline floor lamp.

Marble covers the walls of the ensuite master bathroom in a typically Mediterranean chic vibe.

A wooden shelving unit brings warmth back to the cool marble scheme. Fronds bow from a couple of planters to soften the edges.

The kid’s decor in this home hits ranch style rustic again, with plaid bedcovers and rope pendant light. The rough rustic elements appear more playful by introduction of sweet typographical art and a friendly elephant to sit on.

Another kid’s chair sits at a wooden shelving arrangement, creating an inviting place to study or create artwork.

Hexagonal tiles decorate the walls of this bathroom scheme. Terracotta coloured tiling is distinctly traditional Mediterranean, though the irregular edging of this geometric design portrays a quirky contemporary look. A hexagonal shaped mirror matches the wall decor.

The bath and floor are finished in a mosaic tile.

Visualizer: Jenya Lykasova The second of our two home tours is a two-storey house on the Mediterranean coast. The brief was to embrace the seaside atmosphere and make the house a vibrant place with a cosy feel. The interior was also designed to have personality through appearing slightly aged and to become better with age, like a fine wine. Driftwood furniture has been implemented into the seaside reminiscent scheme, with two unique coffee tables looking as though they could have washed right up onto the beach.

The decor of light warm tones recall the warmth of sand at the seashore. Antique beams above old stone walls and aged furniture evoke feelings of a house built long ago but still full of life.

Two huge rattan pendant light shades decorate the ceiling, hung up like disused fishing baskets.

Over in the dining area, beachy wooden wall decor decorates the stone wall.

Mother-of-pearl pendant lights and a tropical plant continue the seaside theme.

The rustic elements in this space are balanced out with refined seating and a glass fronted dresser that displays a selection of best crockery.

Stunning wooden doors provide a focal point in this white space. A run of kitchen pendant lights illuminate the countertop.

The cabinetry crafted for this space is a high-end example of Mediterranean finesse.

A door slides back to reveal a smaller cooking space.

The concealed kitchen has a more rustic vibe than the scheme surrounding the dining room. Here, the units are a heritage grey with a complementary ceramic tile backsplash that resembles fish scale. Traditional faucets are an important accessory to the look of a rustic kitchen and the faucet in this space has been coupled with a modern undermount sink.

A slab of eye-catching granite clads the adjacent wall.

More driftwood can be found framing the mirrors, radiating beauty through imperfections.

Industrial style lighting adds a stronger note to this dreamy bedroom decor.

A small vanity chair completes the dressing table.

The rocking chair is of a simple rustic style.

A second bedroom brings in some rattan light shades to keep things beachy.

The reading chair has a furry throw for rustic charm.

Decor in the bathroom is an amalgamation of contemporary and rustic styles. The colours are grey and natural wooden tone, aside from the crisp white basins, towel heater and laundry basket.

This third bedroom is a more masculine take on the rustic beach theme, using old suitcases as a bedside table.

The black wall sconces and desk frame add darker notes to the decor.

Coastal breezy white decor fills the last bedroom.

Not everyone will agree with me, but I am a big believer that you don’t need to have a big house to have a great home, in fact, if you ask me personally, I prefer smaller homes because they tend to be done just right – you won’t find rooms that feel incomplete, unfurnished nor neglected with pointless things. When you live in a smaller home, every room has a purpose, every space feels complete and you end up with a house that feels homey. I feel that this Santa Barbara coastal home is a perfect example of well-designed interiors that not only look beautiful but are also smartly done.

Santa Barbara Beach Home Design

This home is very special! I am loving the combination of metal roof, stained Cedar shingles with this modern “Picket” fence.

New-Construction Home Ideas

Mike Stevens Homes was recently featured on Home Bunch (Southern-inspired Modern Farmhouse) and I am honored to have them back today to share this newly-built modern farmhouse. Here, the builder shares some important details:

“This home is a new-construction. The customers came to us knowing what they wanted and had many inspiration photos in mind that they wanted us to help bring to life while also keeping to the budget they had in mind. The stair railing is a great example of this. The couple moved to Knoxville knowing they would be retiring in the next few years and wanted a comfortable home to settle down in that fit their current needs as well as what they would like in future years. Another goal was to make sure their college age children would have a place to come home to on summer breaks and as they grow older. We helped them find a stock home plan (The Williamsburg from Visbeen) that was a very close fit to their needs and just needed a few small adjustments. As a custom home builder with a staff architect, even our stock floor plans get modified to some extent. The customers liked the modern farmhouse look and this plan really had a nice example of clean/simple lines that fit the modern farmhouse look. Part of the fun of the project was finding inspiration photos and ideas that would bring the modern farmhouse to the interior of the home as well as the outside.”

Windows are Pella- Proline- 4 over 1 grid pattern, Black.

The home features a three-car garage with bonus room.

Garage Door- Overhead Door- Courtyard Collection- Series 377T, 9’ by 7’, with Stockbridge Lights.

Siding Paint Color

Siding paint color is “Sherwin Williams Eider White”.

Trim Paint Color

Trim is also painted in “Sherwin Williams Eider White SW 7014”.

Front Door

Front door is DSA Alexandria TDL 6LT 8/0 and the paint color is “Benjamin Moore HC-154 Hale Navy” (it looks darker in the picture above – “Benjamin Moore Black” is a great option if you’re looking for a black paint color for your front door).

Brick: General Shale, New Castle Gray brick with Gray Mortar

I hope you take a good look at the details of this home because it’s really inspiring. For example, this is a great angle to see the trim used in this house and the true hue of the paint color, which is “Sherwin Williams SW 6232 Misty”.

When I think of beautiful homes in Florida, I immediately think of LunDev Custom Homes, which I am sure you remember from seeing their work featured on Home Bunch several other times, including here, here and here. With interiors by Jamie Gernert, this custom British Colonial Style, Winter Park, FL. home, features West Indies architectural influences. Master Bathroom

The master bathroom is divided into three parts: water closet, vanity are and shower. Great usage of space!

Vertical Board & Batten

This bathroom also features vertical board and batten wall paneling and herringbone floor tile.

Master shower floor: 12×24 Grey Tile in Herringbone Pattern.

2 Homes in Mediterranean Rustic Chic

A white range cooker blends in with the white kitchen units.

Diners have a view of the kitchen from modern dining chairs seated at a chunky wooden table. A flurry of dining pendant lights anchor the eating area in the open plan space.

A fireplace sits behind the dining table, sending a cozy glow of firelight through the wine glasses.

In the master bedroom, an ensuite bathroom extends directly into the sleeping and dressing areas.

Marble covers the walls of the ensuite master bathroom in a typically Mediterranean chic vibe.

A wooden shelving unit brings warmth back to the cool marble scheme. Fronds bow from a couple of planters to soften the edges.

Another kid’s chair sits at a wooden shelving arrangement, creating an inviting place to study or create artwork.

The bath and floor are finished in a mosaic tile.

The decor of light warm tones recall the warmth of sand at the seashore. Antique beams above old stone walls and aged furniture evoke feelings of a house built long ago but still full of life.

Two huge rattan pendant light shades decorate the ceiling, hung up like disused fishing baskets.

Over in the dining area, beachy wooden wall decor decorates the stone wall.

Mother-of-pearl pendant lights and a tropical plant continue the seaside theme.

The rustic elements in this space are balanced out with refined seating and a glass fronted dresser that displays a selection of best crockery.

Stunning wooden doors provide a focal point in this white space. A run of kitchen pendant lights illuminate the countertop.

The cabinetry crafted for this space is a high-end example of Mediterranean finesse.

A door slides back to reveal a smaller cooking space.

A slab of eye-catching granite clads the adjacent wall.

More driftwood can be found framing the mirrors, radiating beauty through imperfections.

Industrial style lighting adds a stronger note to this dreamy bedroom decor.

A small vanity chair completes the dressing table.

The rocking chair is of a simple rustic style.

A second bedroom brings in some rattan light shades to keep things beachy.

The reading chair has a furry throw for rustic charm.

Decor in the bathroom is an amalgamation of contemporary and rustic styles. The colours are grey and natural wooden tone, aside from the crisp white basins, towel heater and laundry basket.

This third bedroom is a more masculine take on the rustic beach theme, using old suitcases as a bedside table.

The black wall sconces and desk frame add darker notes to the decor.

Coastal breezy white decor fills the last bedroom.
