I have like 40 pages left of Gideon the Ninth and here are some thoughts (SPOILERS through "everything except the last 40 pages")

>Ianthe going "I'm a Lyctor now, suckers!" and skittering off like a rat instead of being The Big Bad is super funny to me. Like at the Lyctor reveal I figured this was "big reveal! Ianthe was responsible for everything!" which I hadn't suspected only because it would be TOO obvious, with her being the most antagonistic character. But her just being like "I got mine", then killing two people for good measure, then skedaddling into the proverbial sewer is peak evil shitty woman. Queen.

>Really into whatever the fuck Coronabeth's final line was about. Fuck yeah queen go be sadgirl break-up-core over not being codependently killed and absorbed by your sis. Get some ice cream and cry it out.

>After the "Protesilaus was the body in the incinerator" reveal I did spend the next ~100 pages going "okay but earlier you all said two bodies in the incinerator. you said two." Which meant every time something vaguely suspicious about anyone came up I went "were you the second body in the incinerator?" Cool thing about that was that I was eventually dead-on right as soon as they dropped the "Dulcinea said Palamedes was a stranger" I was like "incinerator!" which is a very normal thing to yell at a book and also be completely correct about.

Anything where anyone says another person’s interpretation of a character is wrong. I just like seeing people be happy. Sometimes someone else’s happiness includes reading a character differently than you do. This includes but isn’t limited to: spawn batstarion, transcharacter readings, autistic character readings, tavxorigin children, straight people, lesbians, asexual astarion, sexual astarion, tavxraphael, top raphael, dad gale, women, things contrary to “canon”, and that ship you find annoying.

Idk if Capcom were deliberately trying to make RE4R have at least some romantic undertone when it came to Leon/Ashley bc to me it's pretty obvious, there's a bunch of romantic imagery. Like a lot of the side characters reference it; Luis with his Prince Charming comment at that moment and calling Ash a princess (Dulcinea), Ada seeing that Leon actually cares for Ashley (calls her his "friend" at one point in a weird tone of voice), Ramon referring to them as knight in shining armor and princess and keeps taunting him when he loses her, the queen and king puzzle, the way Krauser taunts him and uses Leon's concern for her against him knowing the way to get to him is to mention Ashley, the merchant commenting if he's having a rough day after Ashley stabs him and runs away, Saddler using Ashley specifically to kill Leon knowing it would be torture for them both (he can read people's minds, right? So he knows), Ashley being so strong willed for resisting Saddler for trying to make her commit something she would never even think of and saving his life again when she jams the gun (yeah she prob didn't know that would happen but her unwillingness to shoot regardless of the mind control making her hand shake so much), Leon himself changing when getting to know Ashley and caring for her personally not for the mission he was forced into. He literally was ready to die for her even if it meant that she most likely wouldn't make it out w/o him. The way he carried her at the end!!! Like that's not just his professionalism and determination, there's devotion there and she shares the same sentiment. The way they ride off into the sunrise after "rain" starts pouring and they both smile at each other??? How is that not romantic imagery? If you saw that scene w/o context you would think they were the surviving couple of an action movie. There's more I'm missing bc I've been playing other games but there's a lot of evidence and context clues.

I mean, I absolutely believe that it was intentional on Capcom's part and the Leon and Ashley romance is actually, in fact, what the developers were going for. It would be absolutely batshit for this gigantic mountain of evidence to be an unintended coincidence. But I don't think that they went into it going, "Okay, this time around, we're going to have Leon and Ashley be The Canon Ship in RE."

What Capcom actually did was take Resident Evil 4 and turn it into a fairy tale. It was a really creative take on the game and was likely meant as appreciation for the fact that OG RE4 was such a major part of so many people's childhoods. (Ashley's line at the shooting gallery of "It reminds me of being a kid" plays into this, too, as a little tongue-in-cheek thing.)

So, as a self-contained story, yes, RE4make is a romance between Leon and Ashley. And that's where I think a huge portion of the fandom is getting tripped up on not being able to see it for what it is. They look at Leon and Ashley and go "okay, but this can't actually be the intention because we know xyz happens later in the series." That doesn't matter. That's not the point of what they did.

The point of it was to pay tribute to the way that so many people -- after coming into the series with RE4 OG in their adolescence -- thought of Leon as being a big, dreamy, hero-type character. So, they did that by actually turning him into one this time around who saves the day and gets the girl.

It doesn't mean that Capcom is committing to the actual ship, though. Just because this romantic storyline happened in RE4make doesn't mean that the next installment in the Remake series is going to confirm that Ashley is Leon's girlfriend or someshit. It is still entirely possible that we will never see Ashley Graham ever again.

As part of a greater whole, RE4make is just another stop along the horrible, winding road that is Leon Kennedy's shitty, shitty life. But, at least this time, he actually got to be the big damn hero for once.

Next to Me (Chapter One)

Elizabeth Weatherwood was a young girl. She had light brown hair with amber eyes eyes that seemed to glow. The girl  came from a family of lords and ladies who were respected. Her mother and father had taken on the roles that had been passed down for generations. She had a younger sister who looked very similar to her. Elizabeth got along with everyone in her family. She was bright, kind, and caring. Everyone in the town adored her.

One day, as the Weatherwoods returned from a summer ball, they were shocked to find their mansion on fire. Everything inside was burnt. All the money was gone. Luckily no one was hurt. But the Weatherwoods has lost it all and were in desperate need of a new start. So they gathered what they could and set sail for a new life.  Elizabeth was only nineteen when she left her home.

The Weatherwoods were off! The sea was calm and the weather was good! Unfortunately, their ship got caught in a raging storm that came out of nowhere. The sea was vicious. Anyone who was to fall in would drown.

Elizabeth was just trying to get her little sister back into the cabin when a wave washed over the deck, dragging her into the sea. Her parents tried to save her but it was too late as Elizabeth drowned. She was lost forever to the sea.

A couple of days later, an old woman living in the woods walked to the beach in search for washed fish to eat. She was shocked to make such a discovery! Elizabeth had survived and washed up on the shore. The old woman took Elizabeth back to her cottage and took care of her. When Elizabeth woke up, she was surprised. 

"Where am I?" she asked, removing the towel from her head. She propped herself up on the bed she laid on. The old woman brought her a bowl of warm soup, smiling gently.

"You're in my house, dearie," she said. Elizabeth rubbed her head.

"All I can remember was the water dragging me down," she said. 

"Well, you're safe and sound now," the old woman replied. "My name is Sasha, what's yours?"

"Elizabeth."

"Nice to meet you Elizabeth."

For two years, Elizabeth lived with Sasha, helping around the house. She raised Elizabeth as if she were her own, making sure she was safe. Sasha taught Elizabeth her wisdom. She was now a young woman, age twenty. She was beautiful than ever and she still remained kind. She learned how to sing and had such a beautiful voice! The birds and animals would join in song or sometimes quiet down to hear Elizabeth's lovely singing. Sasha was proud of her. She saw that Elizabeth was going to be apart of something great! And whatever that was, she was not going to find it in the woods. 

One night, Sasha called Elizabeth into the kitchen. Taking her hands, she said, "Elizabeth, you are such a wonderful person. You are going to accomplish great things and I am so proud of you. But, in order to accomplish your dreams, you have to leave." 

"But Sasha, you need me!" Elizabeth protested. "You have gotten older and are no longer spry. You need me to help around. Please, let me stay." Sasha laughed, patting Elizabeth's hands.

"You are a good child," she said. "I've lived a happy life. You don't need to worry about me anymore, so go, see the world, find love. Show this world the wonderful you." Elizabeth smiled.

The next day, she set off for a kingdom not far from the cottage. She would seek out a job in the village, or even in the castle! Fairchanton was said to be a great kingdom.

Oh how wrong the rumors were.

Queen Millicent was the new queen of Fairchanton. Two years previously, she had overthrown Queen Genevieve and her daughter, Princess Annelise.  She took over the kingdom and completely destroyed the kingdom of Dulcinea, taking all the gold. The royal advisor, Preminger, had all of Fairchanton's gold and was unwillingly to return it. Millicent needed it. But she loved how sassy and evil Preminger was, so she broke him out of jail and promoted him to her advisor and treasurer. He became the richest man in the kingdom! The people of Fairchanton began to starve. Businesses began to shut down, fights broke out, and the kingdom fell apart.

The only ones who were living happily in the castle were Millicent and Preminger.

But Millicent's reign of terror would soon end and Preminger would find something more valuable than gold that would change his life forever...

So as some of you may have noticed (...) I finished Gideon the Ninth some hours ago, then went to sleep (bc apparently I still need sleep, amateur) but after waking up I'm still #shook.

So here's one of my long nosense lists (FULL SPOILERS ahead):

THE POOL SCENE

"“Too many words,” said Gideon confidentially. “How about these: One flesh, one end, bitch.” The Ninth House necromancer flushed nearly black. Gideon tilted her head up and caught her gaze: “Say it, loser.” “One flesh—one end,” Harrow repeated fumblingly, and then could say no more."

Yes, yes, of course I died.

“If anything moves—” “Yaaas, I know. Let it head for Camilla.” (Gideon was wild until the end, a queen)

"I have you. We bring hell." (the tears)

"With Harrow there, suddenly it was easy, and her horror of the monster turned to the ferocious joy of vengeance. Long years of warfare meant that they each knew exactly where the other would stand—every arc of a sword, every jostling scapula. No hole in the other’s defences went unshielded. They had never fought together before, but they had always fought, and they could work in and around each other without a second’s thought."

I'm sorry but did Gideon take on a freacking Lyctor with just her sword, a broken kneecap and other wounds?

And Harrow waking up "Step off, bitch", like not on my watch

When Gideon said "I'm just me" I swear I heard my heart breaking

"Her hands were not shaking anymore" YES BUT WHAT ABOUT ME SOBBING?

The whole scene of them fighting the Lyctor, like Gideon being her smartass self until the end I cannot even

If no one ever tells my hallucination "I cannot conceive of a universe without you in it." then what's even the point

A very honorable mention:

"“He say anything?” Gideon wavered. “He said to tell you he loved you,” she said. “What? No, he didn’t.” “Okay, no, sorry. He said—he said you knew what to do?”"

This was just so real and Palamedes and​ Camilla were #squadgoals.

Now all I'm left with are overthinking stuff and making up theories.

Like there is NO WAY IN HELL Gideon is dead. My girl survived killing gas when she was weeks old. She woke up sore from something that should have sent her in a coma. And the fake Dulcinea telling she knew another Gideon once. Also you all suggested that the Emperor might be the evil one here (excuse my naive self, I'm slow with this stuff we don't have many conspiracy theories where I live). And hell yeah, I'm on board, let's break the shackles of the girl in the Lost Tomb and overthrow an Empire. I mean how could the Undying King not find any body, I mean Judith was dying and there were no others necromancers left on the planet.

And now my wait begins. For now:
