ASAKE AND TRAVIS SCOTT - "ACTIVE"
youtube
"Asake immerses himself in American culture, transitioning from equestrianism to socializing at a skatepark..."
[6.62]
Julian Axelrod: Asake's made his financial status clear when he named his debut Mr Money with the Vibe (still one of the decade's best album titles) but "Active" sounds like a young man obtaining an ungodly amount of money and trying to spend it all in one song. The video features a private jet, a marching band and a fleet of horses. The beat interpolates Nigerian rap, New Orleans bounce and threatens to veer into Jock Jams territory. Even the Travis Scott verse feels like a tax write-off proposed by the label's accountant. The whole thing is so hyper-active (sorry) that it should fold in on itself, but every time Asake pops up on his own track (which isn't often enough) you can hear the joy in his voice, like he can't believe the heights he's reached and isn't sure he'll get to stay there. He sounds like a kid in a candy store, but there are less deserving kids and worse candy stores. [6]
Ian Mathers: Asake is such a winning presence, and that "oh man, I'm active" hook so fun, that it feels like a waste of our limited time when Travis Scott shows up. He's not bad, just beside the point (or, you know, minus one). [7]
Alfred Soto: A collaboration that makes sense, "Active" reanimates Travis Scott; he's an amiable, game presence despite stating he wants his dick sucked like he's the first one to come up with the order. But Asake's the star, singing over the quiet wet beats in search of intimacy. [7]
Taylor Alatorre: I really wish this had fulfilled its initial promise of transplanting the '90s Jock Jams ethos into 2024 Lagos -- it's even got the title for it! As a demonstration of the breadth and elasticity of the artist's "fuji vibe," though, it does what it sets out to do, forcing its American influences, including the N.O. bounce-style vocal chop, to play by Asake's rules. The choice to bleep out Travis Scott on the wrong words is the kind of dumb joke that works, whose humor stems mostly from the fact that they actually decided to go through with it. [7]
Jonathan Bradley: Wedging jock jam chords into Afrobeats turns out to be an exercise more interesting than exciting, which is the exact opposite of what jock jams are supposed to be. Wedging Travis Scott into Afrobeats turns out to be exactly as dull as wedging Travis Scott into anything else he's ever been wedged into. Forget interesting or exciting; I don't think the man has rapped a quotable bar in his life. [4]
Katherine St. Asaph: Was Travis Scott necessary? (Evergreen blurb.) [5]
Nortey Dowuona: Asake got a good verse out of Travis Scott. He is HIM. [10]
Jacob Sujin Kuppermann: Asake’s first two albums were thrilling — two concise journeys through the pop internationale, using the vernacular of contemporary afropop to venture into far stranger territory. “Active” instead dives fully into what musicologists refer to as the jock jam zone; part of me wants to be mad at how crass this is, but an even larger and more powerful part of me thinks this would sound so sick as the backing track for an Anthony Edwards highlight reel. [7]

Two broken hearts with matching sides - Chapter 9
Link: AO3
Notes: I'm so sorry it took me so long. This is the last chapter, I hope you like it.
Here you can find Chapter One, Chapter Two, Chapter Three, Chapter Four, Chapter Five, Chapter Six, Chapter Seven, Chapter Eight.
Together again
“Do you remember how we met?” Laxus asked, placing his skateboard on the grass and sitting in front of the skatepark where they always went to have fun.
“Yeah,” laughed Freed. “You hit me while you were on the skateboard,” he said.
“Technically it was your fault,” Laxus pointed out.
“Really? Because I remember I was standing still, and you failed to stop in time and fell on me,” Freed declared. Laxus smiled and rolled his eyes.
“You stopped at the last,” he objected.
“I don’t think so. It’s just that you’ve always had slow reflexes,” Freed chuckled. Laxus shook his head but didn’t reply.
Also, it’s not like Freed was all wrong. Laxus had lost control of the skateboard that afternoon and was unable to stop or turn in time, so he crashed into Freed and the two fell to the ground on each other. He had been lucky that Freed wasn’t one of those assholes he would have fought with, even though the boy had still told him to ‘learn to ride a skateboard’, as if Laxus didn’t already know how to do it.
Thinking about it, he just laughed. Freed sat across from him on the red skateboard. “And remember that time we crashed into Gildarts’ car?” he asked.
“Don’t remind me,” Laxus laughed and turned to the bar. The man was there and was drinking a glass of wine already early in the morning. Not much had changed in those years. “That old man made us clean the whole bar for at least a whole week.”
“Yeah, my mom was so mad,” Freed said placing his chin on his fist.
“My grandpa too,” Laxus said. “That bastard even seized my skateboard.”
“But then we got it back, thanks to me,” Freed reminded him.
“Yeah, and he pissed off even more,” he concluded and the two chuckled at the memory.
Makarov had forced them to dig the garden just to tire them as much as possible, and then he had made them arrange twenty quintals of wood, and had forced them to help the neighbor too. All in the same afternoon. The two had returned to Makarov’s house so tired that they had fallen asleep on the sofa without even having dinner.
“You say we were little vandals?” Laxus asked.
“Nah, we’ve never done anything that terrible” replied Freed quietly “We were just kids full of energy.” Laxus laughed, thinking they were downright rowdy. But it was nice to think back to those times in company, doing it with Freed was much better than doing it alone. Because now Freed was still there.
Laxus turned to the boy and found himself smiling genuinely happy to be there with him. They had spent so many moments in that park, from the happiest to the saddest. That was where they met, that was where they had fun, that was where they went when they skipped school, that was where they had their first kiss. And that was where they’d had that discussion that broke their hearts.
Freed turned to him and for a moment was surprised to see that Laxus was staring at him. Then his face relaxed into a sweet smile and Laxus felt, perhaps stupidly, his heart do a somersault in his chest.
Even after a long time things hadn’t changed. It was always the two of them, a little different and a little grown up, but in the end, they still managed to have that complicity that bound them.
“Do you remember Lucy’s party?” Freed asked suddenly. Laxus nodded. How can we forget it? It was at that party that the two had kissed, lying on the grass and with alcohol in their bodies. Despite this, Laxus remembered everything. To be honest, Laxus remembered every night he spent with Freed. He lied when he told his friend that with alcohol he didn’t remember half of the things they did. And he regretted it bitterly.
“And do you remember...?” Freed didn’t finish the sentence.
“Yup”.
Freed and Laxus looked at each other for a few seconds in silence, facing each other, each sitting on his skateboard. They didn’t need to say it to understand what they were both thinking. They both remembered their first kiss, the uncertain and awkward one they had shared secretly from the others.
The one that had sent Laxus completely out of his mind, because he had found himself addicted to Freed’s lips, and at the same time had scared him of what he had felt.
God, Laxus wanted to push forward and kiss him again. He wanted to know if it would be different or if it would be as good as it was then. Or if it would have been even better, because now they were both grown up and finally cleared up. They both wanted a love story.
Hell, they both wanted a love story. What the fuck were they waiting for? It was so stupid, just because they didn’t want to make the mistake of years ago didn’t mean they couldn’t kiss. Laxus’s eyes ran all over Freed’s face until they reached his lips.
He seriously wanted to crash into it, close that gap one once and for all and finally be with Freed.
“What are we waiting for?” the question came out of Laxus’ mouth without him being able to control. He returned his gaze to Freed’s eyes, who was looking at him with a strange light in his irises.
“I don’t know,” he replied.
Laxus then pushed his body forward, excitedly noticing that Freed was doing the same. He closed his eyes and pressed his lips to the boy’s, letting his actions speak for him. He placed one hand on the grass to keep himself balanced, with the other hand he gently took Freed’s cheek.
They slowly moved against each other, kissing softly and ignoring the world around them, as when they did it as teenagers. Only now they weren’t drunk, they didn’t hide from anyone, and they didn’t have to do it at night in order not to be seen by anyone. Now the morning sun illuminated both of their faces, as well as their real feelings.
***
“You say they’ll forgive us?” Freed asked with a full package of Japanese food in his hand.
“I hope so,” said Laxus, who was carrying beers instead, entering the elevator.
The two smiled, hoping that the roommates wouldn’t go out of their minds to know the news, which was that they were dating. Officially. Freed still felt excited thinking about it. Evergreen would have killed him, given how he had made her damned. He hoped the food would be enough to reassure her.
Once they got to their floor, they entered the apartment shouting goodbye to the roommates.
“Japanese for everyone! What are we celebrating?” Bickslow asked cheerfully, taking the sack from Freed’s hands and starting to take out the plates. Evergreen was already sitting comfortably on the sofa.
“Er... our engagement,” Laxus said, blushing slightly.
All of Bickslow’s enthusiasm disappeared and the boy looked up at them.
“Serious?” he asked.
“Well, not engagement in the true sense of the word” Freed was keen to clarify “But yes, we’re dating” he added with a smile.
“Well, it was time you dated,” Bickslow commented as he opened a tub full of noodles. Laxus and Freed frowned slightly.
“What does ‘it was time’ mean?” asked the blond. They both thought the two friends would be more surprised and thrilled. Instead, it seemed that they already knew everything.
“It’s since Laxus came out that we thought you two should be together,” Evergreen revealed.
“What?” asked the astonished blond.
“Come on, you were so close and… well, even when I didn’t know you were gay I thought so. You were together all the time,” Evergreen said. Bickslow nodded and Laxus and Freed sat on the sofa, a little disappointed by that reaction.
“You never said anything,” Freed noted.
“Well, we tried to do it when you left, but you were both two walls,” Bickslow explained. Freed and Laxus didn’t reply and began to eat.
“Anyway, we wanted to thank you. If it weren’t for you, we would never have solved our problems,” Freed said.
“Speaking of this,” Evergreen began. “If you want to be forgiven, I want to know what happened between you two and why the hell you weren’t talking,” she clarified, and her tone didn’t allow for replies. Freed and Laxus exchanged a glance and sighed in resignation. Besides, they didn’t have much to hide now, and Ever and Bickslow had been really patient with them.
“Let’s say there have been some misunderstandings,” Freed said.
“Really? Did you fight and punch each other only for misunderstandings?” Evergreen snapped. Laxus felt ridiculous enough now to explain the story, to think back they had been two idiots.
“Yes,” Freed replied calmly instead.
Then they both began to explain the situation, how they both had a crush in the last year of high school and how they ended up becoming a kind of friends with benefits, and then completely detaching themselves. Evergreen and Bickslow listened to them in silence, curious and a little surprised to discover certain things. When the story ended Evergreen was still very skeptical.
“Are you telling me you were fucking and didn’t realize that you were both in love for each other?” she asked. Hell, it made them look like morons.
“Well, we’ve never fucked” Freed pointed out.
Unfortunately, Laxus thought, and blushed at the thought. It also wasn’t really as simplistic as Evergreen said. If only he hadn’t persisted in dating Jenny, and if only Freed had been open to his emotions, they would have understood each other. But that had confused everything and, Laxus had to admit, he had really thought that Freed didn’t care about him, after how cold he had been.
“Either way, you’re two idiots,” Evergreen commented. Freed and Laxus rolled their eyes but didn’t reply and exchanged a glance and a brief smile, happy to have overcome all that. They spent the rest of the evening together with the two friends, eating and deciding to watch a movie that suited everyone.
***
The movie ended when it was almost one in the morning and everyone went to the bathroom to wash and sleep. Freed walked into his room with a smile and lay back on the bed, closing his eyes and looking back on his day. If he still thought about how things had changed with Laxus, he found himself smiling like a fool. God, after three years he was still as in love as he was when he was just a teenager. It was ridiculous, but he felt good.
He turned on his side and thought about how he and Laxus had decided to get engaged and not go around the subject anymore. They had done well, and luckily Laxus had taken the initiative, he honestly didn’t know if he would ever have the courage to do it.
He heard a knock on the door and surprised Freed sat up in bed, then turned on the light of the bedside lamp and told anyone to come in. Laxus came out from behind the door.
“Can I come in?” he asked.
“Sure,” Freed replied. The blond entered the room and closed the door behind him. He looked around uncomfortably and Freed looked at him confused. “Did you need something?” he asked.
“Um... well, I just wanted to be with you for a while,” Laxus admitted awkwardly with a slight blush on his face. Freed smiled softly and made room for him in the bed, inviting him to sit. Laxus did so and they both leaned their backs against the wall. They looked at each other for a moment and then exchanged a sweet and quick kiss, which again caused a certain warmth in Freed’s stomach.
“You say we really were two idiots?” Laxus asked referring to how Evergreen had called them earlier when they told them why they have fought.
“Maybe we are,” Freed admitted with a smile. He honestly didn’t care, he wanted all their misunderstandings to be just a memory. Laxus laughed slightly and ran a hand over Freed’s knee. Freed walked over to him, so that their arms touched. After so much time acting like idiots, he wanted to enjoy the contact with Laxus as much as possible, and he was glad that the blonde also seemed to want the same.
“You know, I wanted to kiss you from the moment I saw you in boxers when I walked into your room,” Laxus admitted in a half laugh. Freed raised his eyebrows in surprise and the blonde continued. “Or rather, I wanted to hit you against the wall, punch you and then kiss you.” Freed laughed slightly.
“Well, if you want to know, I wanted to do it when I saw you with Rufus. Even though my idea was to kiss you in front of him, punch him and throw him out of the apartment, and then punch you” he revealed and it was Laxus’ time to laugh.
“I was hoping you were jealous, even if it didn’t seem like it,” he commented. Freed’s eyes widened slightly.
“Did you go out with him just to make me jealous?” he asked surprised.
“Well, for that too,” Laxus admitted. “Not only for that, at least I can say I have a type.” Freed frowned. He hated being compared to Rufus. He still didn’t understand what was similar between them.
“Don’t compare me to him anymore. Seriously, we couldn’t be more different. He’s a presumptuous arrogant who thinks he’s above everyone else,” he said a little sourly. Well, he was still jealous and still the idea of Laxus and Rufus dating made him nervous. Laxus smiled and squeezed his knee, perhaps to calm him down.
“A bit like you,” he said though.
“Do you consider me a presumptuous arrogant?” Freed asked, stunned, and a little offended. He really wasn’t, he was still thinking with some irritation about Rufus.
“Well, you’re a little bit,” Laxus smiled. “And Rufus isn’t so presumptuous. Are you sure you aren’t saying this just because you’re jealous?”.
“Of course. Besides, I’ve no doubt that I’m better than him in many ways,” Freed commented. Did they have to talk about Rufus?
“About being presumptuous,” Laxus murmured and Freed gave him a dirty look. The blonde left him a quick kiss on his lips, which calmed him slightly. “In any case, you controlled yourself well, if I had seen someone go out with you, I would’ve surely punched him” he said seriously. Freed smiled.
“Do we have to talk about the other guys?” he asked. He would have preferred to spend a quiet evening with Laxus, and he doubted that the blonde had come in to talk about their past relationships or about Rufus.
“No,” Laxus smiled. “Actually I went in for something else,” he said, looking away and staring at the wardrobe in front of them. Freed looked at him curiously, waiting for the blonde to go on. For a moment he feared that he wanted to tell him something bad, but when he saw the boy’s cheeks blush, he calmed down a bit.
“I want you to know that I’m in love with you,” Laxus said and Freed was silent for a moment, feeling a flush of heat rising from his stomach. Laxus continued talking. “I know it’s early and it may sound stupid to you, but I really want there to be nothing more unspoken between us and… I love you, Freed. I did it years ago, even if I didn’t want to admit it, and I still do today” he revealed, continuing to stare at the wardrobe. Freed felt his heart beating furiously in his chest. He took Laxus’s hand between his.
“I love you too,” he said. Laxus’s face broke into a smile, and his shoulders relaxed.
Then the two boys pushed against each other to kiss. They hugged in a tight embrace and joined their lips in a more intense kiss than all those they had exchanged up to that moment. Freed felt that Laxus was pushing him to lie down on the bed and didn’t object.
He found himself lying with his back against the mattress, with Laxus on top of him. He ran his hands through Laxus’ hair so he didn’t move away from him. He had wanted that moment for so long. Not just sex with Laxus, but his love.
They broke away panting and looked into each other’s eyes.
“Can I sleep here?” the blond asked in a hoarse voice.
“You can do more” was Freed’s reply. Laxus smiled and leaned over him, capturing his lips again. Finally, they were together again.

10 Cool Things About Seattles Green Lake Neighborhood
Seattle is known for its greenery, which makes sense, it is the Evergreen state afterall. It’s no wonder one of our favorite spots is Green Lake, accurately named after the freshwater lake at the heart of Seattle. A little bit of history: the Green Lake neighborhood was settled in the late 1800s and has always been residential and the scenic backdrop to many people’s lives. Perhaps that’s why it’s still such a popular spot for locals and tourists alike along with the occasional celebrity! We’ve compiled a list of some of our favorite Green Lake legends, stories and highlights that show what a quirky, beautiful spot Green Lake is and we hope will continue to be!
Duck Island: Duck Island was originally created as a safe habitat for swans which obviously didn’t pan out. This small island is located in the middle of Green Lake and is off limits to visitors. In fact, it’s even against the law to trespass on this island as it was deemed a wildlife refuge back in the 50’s (this changed in the 80’s). If caught, you could get a misdemeanor for trespassing. But rules were meant to be broken, right? In 2017, a group of skaters handbuilt their own skatepark in the middle of Duck Island. Some videos can still be found online. Did they get caught, yes. Did they get in trouble? You know it. Let this be a lesson, Duck Island is for the birds.
Twin Teepees: There’s a local legend that Colonel Harland Sanders (yes! The KFC guy) was a short order cook at the former Twin Teepees, a local establishment that was destroyed by fire and then later torn down in 2001. John Owen, who wrote Walking Seattle said that the owner of the Twin Teepees, Walter Clear “met another energetic restaurateur who had fallen upon hard times. He offered his new friend Harold Sanders a temporary job as a short order cook at one of his Seattle restaurants. Clark moved his friend to the Twin Teepees, where the man’s fascination with herbs and spices continued.” After almost a year in Seattle, Harold decided to head home to Kentucky and later began to refer to himself as “Colonel Sanders.” We may never know if he developed his famous recipes here in our very own Green Lake neighborhood but it’s still a pretty tasty story.
The Green Lake Arch: Originally located as a prominent fixture in the Martha Washington School for Girls, a historic school building on Lake Washington. This looming piece of history now resides in Green Lake, but how? You may have heard stories about the Martha Washington School for Girls. Ghost stories to be specific. The school, which has since been demolished, was built in 1921. The school offered support for neglected and unfortunate young girls until the school closed their doors in 1952. It sat empty and neglected for decades, some say satanic cults took place in the structure which led to the 1972 decision to demolish it. The City of Seattle purchased and tore down the building and built a park (which you can visit today). Sightings only intensified of young girls haunting the shores of Lake Washington. So how did the huge arc get to Green Lake and not in a landfill? For some reason, it was put in storage in 2009 and brought to Green Lake as part of Seattle’s Shade Park and Plaza. For many decades this eerie arch greeted young girls as they entered their school each day and now you too can visit it in Green Lake, just watch out for the paranormal, it’s probably still haunted.
Magnet Fishing: It’s how it sounds and it works with varying success. Local man, Sam Miller was out magnet fishing on the lake and uncovered an unlabeled can with an expiration date of 2020. Sam, who is also a local comedian in Seattle, opened the mystery can at Emmett Montgomery & Brett Hamill’s Joketeller’s Union show in the summer of 2019 and proceeded to taste this mystery meat. Spoiler alert, it wasn’t spoiled! The cool lake temperatures keep things like beer cans and food cans nice and chilled! You can watch the “uncanning” here.
Spuds Fish N Chips: Founded in 1935, this place has history! Two brothers, Jack and Frank Alger, are credited with bringing the phenomenon that is “fish & chips” to Seattle. The brothers, originally from England (where the whole fish and chips fad started) decided to open a restaurant in Alki and later Green Lake. It’s rumored the brothers even helped out Ivar’s with his famous fish and chips recipe. Taste test anyone?
Milk Carton Races: This quirky event has been taking place every year since its opening event in 1972 (sorry 2020, the next race has been rescheduled for 2021). It’s officially called the Lucerne Seafair Milk Carton Derby and features the weirdest, most colorful milk carton boats you have ever seen. You never know what kind of boat or floatation creation will float by as they vary in size and designs. May the best milk carton boat win!
Water Lantern Festival: This is another annual event that has been rescheduled due to COVID-19 but their website says to check back in 2021. Watch as a spectator or take part by purchasing a lantern that you’ll personalize with a message or drawing. Watch as it drifts in tandem with hundreds of other lanterns across Green Lake. It’s a sight to see! Food trucks and live music make for a fun filled evening.
First Date: Green Lake can seem like the perfect romantic spot, a stroll around the scenic lake, canadian geese honking in harmony as you pass by with your new love…except when you realize you have absolutely nothing in common with your date and you’re only a quarter way around Green Lake. A stroll with your date can turn awkward really fast and can feel like a ride you can’t get off of. So romantics beware, Green Lake may be the best or worst place to go on a first date. It can be a long 2.8 miles around the lake.
The Aqua Theater: Originally built in 1950 for Seattle’s Seafair as a way to showcase “swimusicals”, which is just how it sounds. Singing, dancing and synchronized ballet swimming a la water musical! Besides swimusicals, many plays have taken place at the Aqua Theater along with jazz festivals, wrestling matches, comedy shows, and live music concerts. After the summer productions, the activity at the Aqua Theater waned (most probably due to the near constant wet weather) and was for the most part abandoned. After Led Zeppelin and Grateful Dead played at the Theater in 1960, the City of Seattle deemed it unsafe. In 1970 it was torn down and repurposed. Some sections of the grandstand remain today and offer a great way to exercise those glutes.
Gaines Point: The murder of Sylvia Gaines was huge news in Seattle when it happened in June of 1926. A man was walking around the north end of Green Lake on his way to work when he discovered a pair of women’s shoes. He investigated further and found Sylvia, dead near the shore. Sylvia Gaines was only 22 and had just moved to Seattle to reconnect with her estranged father whom she hadn’t seen since she was 5. It didn’t take long for investigators to charge her father, Bob Gaines with her murder. It only took 3 hours for the jury to find Bob Gaines guilty. The grove of Alder trees where Sylvia was found was replaced by Cottonwood trees (many of which were planted as a memorial to Sylvia). The trees grew to be 70 years old and offered a habitat to bald eagles but unfortunately their limbs began to fall. Deemed too dangerous, the cottonwoods were then removed. They have since been replaced with Populus Robusta trees. There are many who say the ghost of Sylvia has been seen peeking through the branches of these trees at night!

Commonwealth, Portland, Oregon
I've spent most of this year's rainy season skating the dry parts of Burnside, so a trip to the indoor park a few blocks away was long overdue. I finally checked out Commonwealth's skateshop and indoor concrete park this weekend.
The park is a U-shaped mini bowl, with a tiny mini-ramp attached at one end, and a bank down to some ledges and flat bars at the other. There are some cool little hips and wallrides scattered around the deck, and it's clear that the park is designed to flow together as a whole. Like other Evergreen parks I've ridden, using the decks and rolling in makes a huge difference with speed and lines here.
The bowl is small, but there's a decent amount of variety mixed in. There's a pool coping clamshell type of corner, steel pipe coping through more square corners, and a long bank wall. In spite of really being one bowl, the park seems to appeal to a wide range of tastes and styles
Another nice thing about Commonwealth is the skateshop. The shop is clean, bright, and has a decent selection of really nice stuff. It's a real departure from the typical indoor skatepark with a dusty shop in the spare room.
Commonwealth feels like when your local shop builds a ramp out back, but this one happens to be a full concrete skatepark.

Two broken hearts with matching sides - Chapter 5
Link: AO3
Here you can find Chapter One, Chapter Two, Chapter Three, Chapter Four.
Pretend nothing happened
Evergreen would have killed him. It was the second time Freed had disappeared and left in the middle of the night without telling them where. This time at least he had sent them a message, writing them that he was fine and that they shouldn't worry. That he’d come back to get his things and find another apartment.
Despite this, the girl had slept little, also because Laxus had been intractable all evening. She honestly didn't understand them. Bickslow put a cup of coffee in front of her and sat down on the table eating a croissant.
“Freed won't come back, will he?” he asked.
“I don't think so,” Evergreen replied, texting his friend. He didn't answer her calls, but at least he wrote them. She put down the phone partly realizing that her friend wouldn’t have said anything more to her. “You say we exaggerated?” she then asked. Bickslow snorted.
“A little,” he admitted, “I just thought a little push would do them good.”
“Yeah, I thought so too,” Evergreen said in a sigh. “Maybe they'll never go back to the way they used to be,” she added sadly. The point was, she didn't understand what had happened between them. She had come up with multiple scenarios, but she hadn't been able to confirm any of them.
Of only one thing she was certain, both were looking for each other and both were missing. She knew Laxus missed Freed, she saw him every time they mentioned the old high school days. And Bickslow had told her the same about Freed. And lately she too had noticed. Also, until the night before, Freed had stayed in their apartment. That surely meant something.
But neither of them wanted to take the first step. And she just wanted to help them, but not knowing what had happened was difficult. Laxus was like a wall and Freed… well, Freed was worse.
She picked up the phone and wrote to Freed agreeing to see each other that morning. Evergreen would bring him some clothes, she hoped Freed would finally talk to her, but she honestly didn't have much hope anymore. She finished her coffee and then got ready to leave. She took some of her friend's stuff into a bag and then turned to Laxus's room. The door was ajar. She pushed it lightly and noticed that the boy wasn’t home.
“Hey Bix, where did Laxus go?” she asked. She thought he was still sleeping with a hangover. The friend appeared in the corridor.
“He's not in his room?” he asked surprised.
“No,” the girl said, pointing to the unmade and empty bed. The two glanced at each other and then Bickslow, sighing heavily, called his friend, just hoping that he hadn't decided to leave too.
***
Laxus had now been sitting on his grandfather's sofa for twenty minutes, saying nothing, despite having gone there for a very specific reason. At least Makarov knew him enough not to rush him. He had brought him a freshly squeezed orange juice and then sat in the armchair, chatting about this and that and watching TV.
Laxus sighed in annoyance and ran a hand through his hair, thinking back to the fight he had had the night before with Evergreen and Bickslow. He had exaggerated, he knew it. And he had regretted quite a lot especially how he had yelled at Evergreen. And Freed too, to be honest. Because although he hadn't wanted to think about it until then, he had realized that he hadn't behaved as he should have done either. He hated to admit it, but that was it. He'd been the one who screwed it up, kissing his best friend three years ago and slipping his hands down his pants.
He put his hands in front of his face and didn't notice how Makarov was staring at him in anticipation, until the old man turned the volume down on the TV so that it was just background.
“What happens?” he asked.
“I had a fight with Bix and Ever,” Laxus explained, moving his hands by his hair up to the nape of his neck and glancing at his grandfather.
“And they kicked you out of the apartment?” Makarov asked.
“No,” Laxus said, shaking his head. “I left. I was... a bit short-tempered,” he admitted.
“Well, you've argued several times with them. They know your temper, I wouldn't worry about it,” the man said. Evidently, he had already understood that it was another reason why Laxus was there, why Laxus was fretting. The blond evaluated the words before saying them, but he realized that there was no good way to do it.
“I also had a fight with Freed,” he admitted at that point. Makarov knew that he shared an apartment with Evergreen and Bickslow so as not to make the train ride to university every day, and he also knew that Freed had been back for a couple of months. Laxus had told him a few weeks ago, but he had refused to say more.
“Why?” Makarov asked.
“Because... I don't know,” he snapped. Makarov raised an eyebrow and Laxus turned his gaze to the window. He hated admitting it out loud. Freed influenced him more than he ever thought. Since three years. Indeed, for more than three years. It had always been like this, only... if he realized it late. When Freed had got on the plane and left to Germany. “Because he went away for three years without telling me anything. He didn’t warn me or greet me.” he snapped. He couldn't say anything else aloud, because if he had admitted it...
“Were you together?” Makarov asked. Laxus's eyes widened slightly.
“What?” he whispered. “No, we... we were just friends.”
“Friends who spent their afternoons making out?” Makarov asked. Laxus looked up at his grandfather, surprised and speechless. How the hell did he know? The old man smiled slightly. “Do you think I didn't know what you were doing in the upstairs room when I was leaving you alone?” he asked softly. Laxus remained silent and only after a while did he find his voice again.
“We were just friends anyway,” he repeated. That was true. Makarov frowned and peered into his face, evidently waiting for the sequel. Laxus sighed in annoyance. The old man knew now, besides, it wasn't that it could have been worse than that. He leaned back on the sofa and crossed his arms.
“Well, we made out. Very. And we acted like boyfriends. But only when we were drinking,” he specified. “It was… such a thing,” he added with a shrug. “We were drunk, we had some fun, and then we pretended nothing happened,” he explained. Makarov nodded thoughtfully.
“So, you never talked about it?”.
“No,” Laxus grunted. Then he thought about it. “Well, maybe once, but it wasn't a real conversation,” he said, scratching the back of his neck. Makarov waited for him to explain exactly what they had said to each other and the blond did. Even though three years had passed, he remembered it well. How could he forget something like that? Besides, it's not like they were drunk. Not that time. The more he talked, the more he realized that he had been an asshole.
But he tried to fucking fix it. He had filled Freed with calls, messages, and his friend had never answered him. He was gone without even wanting to try to solve. Maybe Freed was right. Laxus put his head in his hands and was silent as he finished throwing everything out. He dared not look his grandfather in his eyes, thinking he’d be disappointed.
“Look Laxus, you were a kid,” Makarov began. “And you were both young and stupid, you both acted stupid. But now Freed’s here, and now that he's here you should talk to him.”
“He doesn't want to,” Laxus grunted. Whenever Freed started, he walked away. He had left the first time he had set foot in the apartment, he had left the night before. Damn, he still hated him. And Laxus knew that he deserved it a little.
“Have you ever tried to do it calmly?” Makarov asked. Laxus was silent for a moment without saying anything. He hadn't done it. Because with Freed it was difficult to talk calmly, just having him around made him pissed off. He always felt that desire to throw a punch at him, to make him understand how he was hurt to know he was in Germany without a shred of greeting. Wanting Freed to feel as bad as he felt at the time.
“Look, the only thing that can help you is being honest about your feelings,” Makarov said. “If it goes wrong, never mind. But always better than staying like this”.
Laxus knew the old man was right.
***
Freed and Laxus still hadn't spoken to each other that afternoon. They had gone out together, had skateboarded around the park but never looked each other in the eye. They had also avoided touching each other, which was strange, since up until a week before they couldn't wait to be alone just to rub on each other.
Laxus jumped around the skatepark trying not to think about what Freed had done and said that morning, but it was hard. Damn difficult. He still remembered how Natsu had approached curious and how he had asked Freed if he was gay.
And Freed nodded.
He just said yes.
It still baffled Laxus. He knew, of course. Damn, it was obvious that he knew, they kissed every time they could, even if Laxus persisted in pretending nothing happened. But he didn't think he would admit it like that, in front of everyone, as if nothing had happened. He hadn't said anything about Laxus, but given how close they were, then people would start talking. And he didn't want to.
Besides, it's not like he had anything to say. He wasn't gay. He made out with Freed because he was a friend, friends did something like that, he... he was just confused. Bloody confused.
That's why when Natsu asked him the same question, Laxus laughed and said he was with Jenny. He wasn't with her, he hadn't seen her for quite a while and maybe his classmates knew it, but he didn't care. It was better that they thought he had been dumped by her, rather than the other way around. Rather than him… he didn't dare think about it.
Frustrated Laxus threw his skateboard aside and left the park, sitting on the ground and lighting a cigarette. He glanced at Freed still wandering around the park and immediately regretted it. He just wanted to go to him, grab him and take him to a place where no one could see them, then kiss him and hold him, and pretend it was all normal. Being with him and locking themselves in a room pretending the world doesn't exist. That it was just them.
He looked down at the grass and swallowed nervously. What the hell was wrong with him? Why couldn't he stop thinking about his friend? Why couldn’t he go out with Jenny or any other girl? Why couldn't he say aloud what Freed had said?
He was so immersed in his own thoughts that he didn’t notice that his friend had approached him.
“Are you angry with me?” Freed asked standing in front of him, with the skateboard under his arm. Laxus shook his head but refused to speak and look up. “Listen... I won't tell either of us but ... may I know… what we are?” his friend asked and Laxus suddenly stiffened.
“What do you mean?” he asked with a dry throat.
“I mean... what we do...” Freed stammered.
“I don't know what you're talking about,” Laxus said dryly. Freed froze. Laxus didn’t dare to look up, realizing immediately that he had been an asshole. He tried to fix it. “Look, what… what we do” he began, not daring to say aloud what they were doing “We do it just because we’re drunk, because when we’re drunk, we do stupid and senseless things. I mean, I don't remember half of the things we do and I don't… I'm not gay. I’ve nothing against you, but... I'm not like you. I'm with Jenny,” he said awkwardly, staring at the cigarette between his fingers. That's why he didn't want to talk about it. Because then he didn't know what to say. Because his words all seemed wrong.
Freed said nothing for several seconds. In those seconds Laxus felt he was dying, almost hoping that his friend would throw a punch at him and tell him to wake up. Or that he would hug him and tell him he understood him. But Freed didn't do any of that.
“Ok,” he only whispered.
Laxus then looked up, noticing how his friend was staring at the park in front of them. Just ok? Laxus had thought he wanted to know more, and now he didn't know whether to be relieved at that reaction. He wasn't. He would have preferred that Freed insist, that he insult him, or that he have any other reaction. Anything would have been better. Better than that word that made it clear that Freed wasn't interested in him that much.
“I'm going home,” Freed said and put the skateboard on the ground, got on it and pushed himself with one foot, walking away from there. Laxus didn't stop him, just watched as he sped off down the street, his hair fluttering in the wind.
***
As soon as he got home, Freed had shiny eyes and streaked cheeks. He had been running around town on his skateboard avoiding the busiest areas and getting to his apartment as quickly as possible. He ran up the stairs and as soon as he was inside, he locked himself in his room, throwing the skateboard on the ground and throwing himself on the bed.
Why? Why had he done it? Why had he asked Laxus what they were? What had he expected? That he declared his love for him? Kiss him and tell him they were engaged? He threw his head on the pillow and heard new sobs rise up. He hated him. He hated him and he hated himself. What had he been thinking? That just kissing Laxus made him his boyfriend?
He tried to control his breathing and turned on his stomach, staring at the ceiling. He was a fool. He had completely fallen in love with his best friend and now he had made it worse. As if it weren't bad already. As if kissing him every time they were tipsy didn't hurt him enough already. He had thought...
He had thought wrong, that's all. Laxus wasn’t in love with him. He didn't care. It was just a momentary release, just fun. Maybe he liked boys, or maybe it was just a stupid thing he did when he was drunk without thinking.
Why must he have fallen in love with Laxus with all people? Why he?
He closed his eyes and pressed his fingers to his eyelids so as not to start crying again. With a shaky breath he reached for the phone and took it, deciding he couldn't go on like this. That he could no longer see Laxus. He was too sick. He had to go.
He entered the chat with his father and reread the message he had sent him a few months earlier, sending him the program of a university in Germany. Perhaps that would have been the best idea. Starting a new life away from Magnolia. Away from Laxus. The very thought made him feel bad.
And then how would he tell him? He had planned all summer with Laxus, they had decided that one week Freed would go to Laxus' grandfather's country house. The next week they would go to the beach in Hargeon with Freed's mother. Then they would stay in Magnolia together for a while and then they would go camping together, and then...
Freed began to feel sick. He didn't want to get away from Laxus. Maybe he could do it. If they hadn't kissed again, if they hadn't seen each other as before, maybe he would be able to get over it.
He turned off the phone and put it aside. He would wait for school to finish and decide, based on how things would change with Laxus.
What he didn't expect was to see the blonde go out and kiss Jenny a few days later. The afternoons he and Laxus spent together dwindled more and more. Laxus no longer spoke to him as before, he was careful not to touch him too much, he always invited Jenny when they went out together. They kissed all the time and Freed couldn't help but feel his heart breaking every time he saw them.
Until the afternoons were just a memory, because Laxus apparently preferred spending time with Jenny rather than him. The last two weeks of high school were terrible for Freed, who couldn't wait to leave Magnolia forever.
As soon as the final year exams were over, Freed called his father who paid him the ticket to Germany. Freed couldn't even tell Laxus, he didn't even get a chance to say goodbye. He didn't even tell Bickslow, or Evergreen. Only a few days later he would write to Bickslow, and he would have blocked Laxus on all social networks.
Notes: With this chapter the flashbacks are over. From the next there will be only parts about the present (and I assure you that in the next chapters they will talk). I hope you continue to like it.

Two broken hearts with matching sides - Chapter 2
Summary: Freed and Laxus were inseparable friends, they always spent their days together ever since they were children, so much so that they were considered indivisible. That’s why everyone was surprised when during the last year of high school, the two boys no longer spoke a word from one day to the next. That’s why everyone was surprised when Freed left for Germany and Laxus knew nothing about it. After three years the two will be forced to see each other again, and for a period to live under the same roof. [Freed/Laxus]

Here you can find Chapter One.
How relationships change
Eventually Freed stopped by their apartment. Laxus knew this because he had heard him talking to Bickslow and Evergreen from his room. He avoided him though. In fact, they avoided each other. When Laxus was with the two friends, Freed was locked in his room, and when Freed did, it was Laxus who locked himself away not wanting to have anything to do with him. Or rather, unable to bear the presence of the old friend.
For three whole years they hadn't heard from each other, Freed hadn't even sent him half a text, no calls. He had just gone and apparently had told Bickslow and not him. And Laxus still remembered how bad he'd been when he found out.
He remembered all the calls he had made, calls that had been ignored by Freed. He remembered all the unanswered messages. He had made a fool of himself for someone he considered his friend, for someone who treated him exactly like his father did, just by walking away and not giving a damn about what he left behind.
And that's just for a… Laxus didn't want to think about it, because if he thought about it, he realized that maybe, maybe, it was he who had ruined everything. That didn't mean Freed didn't blame him. The bastard was gone, and he hadn't even given him the opportunity to explain himself.
Laxus felt the irritation rise again, especially as he listened to the voices of the three boys on the other side of the wall. From what he understood, Freed intended to find another apartment, but Laxus knew it wasn't going to be easy. By now all the students must have already booked, so either Freed took one himself if he had the money - and he probably gave it that he had decided to go to rich daddy in Germany - or he would settle for cheap shit. Laxus just hoped he’d leave quickly so he wouldn't have to see him again.
Or that Freed would make up his mind to talk to him, explaining what the fuck was going through his head. He quickly pushed that thought away, not wanting to delude himself. Evidently, if he had been ignored for three years, Freed didn't give a shit about him. He certainly wasn't going to start now.
There was a knock on the door, and shortly thereafter Bickslow's head appeared from behind the door.
“Hey, would you like to take a walk downtown?” he asked.
“No” the answer came immediately. Laxus didn't want to go out with Freed. He seemed to have made it clear, but apparently the two friends were meddles who didn't understand shit, or didn't want to understand. Why the hell couldn't they just go about their business and leave it alone? He had almost forgotten Freed, and because of them, now he couldn't do it anymore. Because Freed was under his own roof.
“There isn’t Freed. He goes out with Ever,” Bickslow said.
“Anyway, I don't feel like it.”
“Not even if I buy you dinner?” the friend asked. Laxus didn't answer, honestly, he wasn't in the mood. He hadn't been for days, precisely since Freed had set foot in that apartment. No matter how hard he tried to avoid him, it was difficult to do so in such a small space. He was fortunate that Freed spent a lot of time in the library and that he never dined there.
“Come on,” Bickslow insisted.
“I want the double cheese pizza,” Laxus said, standing up.
“Gone,” Bickslow replied.
Soon after, the two went out downtown, heading towards the park where he and Freed always played hooky to skateboard. Not that there was a place that didn't remind him of Freed in Magnolia. They had spent years there, going around all corners, having fun like the kids they were. But if over time Laxus got used to it and managed to push those melancholy memories into a corner of his mind, now that Freed was back, he couldn't do it anymore.
The mood hit him again and as soon as they arrived at the park, Laxus lit a cigarette, hoping that it would help him calm down. It didn't work the way he wanted, unfortunately. Bickslow kept talking until two people caught his attention. Freed and Evergreen, at the bar in the middle of the park.
“Bickslow... I said don't get in the way,” the blonde told him, interrupting whatever his friend was talking about.
“They don't know we're here and we can leave if you want,” Bickslow said. “Can I just know what happened? You were inseparable…” he tried.
“No”.
Bickslow was silent and Laxus let his gaze wander towards Freed, feeling a new nervousness rise. The boy had taken an ice cream croissant, the same one he always took even in high school. Why did he have to get hit by those things? Laxus looked away but when he did, he saw the skatepark he and Freed spent hours on.
He fucking hated him. Why the hell was he back? Couldn't he have stayed in Germany with his rich daddy instead of going back there? Maybe because it had all been a game for Freed. Or maybe because a three-year journey was enough to forget him and move on. Or maybe he was still pissed about how Laxus had behaved three years ago.
In any case, whatever had happened, Freed had moved on. He didn't want to see it, he didn't care, he didn't even want to discuss it. It was just Laxus still thinking of him, pathetic as ever. And he hated himself for it. And he hated Freed for it.
“You two should talk,” Bickslow said.
“No”.
“I’m saying it for you,” the friend insisted.
“Maybe I wasn't clear,” Laxus began letting all his irritation shine through, because he was sure he would punch Bickslow in the face if he continued with that pantomime. He was unable to continue though because a third voice woke him from his thoughts.
“Guys, I finally see you” Gildarts greeted them “You arrived at just the right time. I’ve these packages to unload,” he said pointing to the truck full of cartons, probably full of drinks. Laxus snorted but forced himself to get up, knowing full well that complaining would do no good. Better get the job done right away and then get some free beers.
“You're a profiteer,” Bickslow said instead, but Gildarts smiled at them friendly.
“And you spent your whole adolescence getting me damned like a madman,” the man recalled.
The three each took a package and walked towards the bar. Laxus carefully avoided Freed's gaze, hoping the boy would leave as he always did, but Gildarts obviously screwed it up.
“Freed? You're back? Nobody told me anything” the man asked surprised, placing the cardboard on the ground to greet the boy. Laxus was forced to stop and only because he didn’t have the keys to the warehouse, which were in the hands of the man. He just hoped Gildarts would hurry.
“Hi,” Freed greeted him. “I've only been back a few days ago,” he explained kindly.
“I'm not surprised to see you here, I remember that you and Laxus spent hours skating and getting me damned like a madman” commented the man. The two concerned stiffened but said nothing. Laxus reached out to get the keys from Gildarts but he couldn't. “Maybe I should get you to work too, so as to take revenge for the swing you and Laxus destroyed.”
“Can we go into the warehouse?” Laxus asked slightly annoyed. The last thing he wanted was to start a chat about old times.
Gildarts handed him the deck, while Freed replied to the man telling him that at the moment he had other things to do. The blond thus managed to get away from there, not without hearing Gildarts remembering the old days, unaware that Laxus and Freed no longer spoke to each other. The warehouse wasn't far from them, so the blonde could hear the whole conversation.
“So, you live with Laxus, I'm not surprised. Some things never change” the man said cheerfully.
“Everything changes” was Freed's somewhat cold reply which, despite everything, sent a pang of anguish to Laxus's stomach. “And I'm looking for another apartment. Indeed, if you’ve to recommend me some places I’d be grateful”.
Laxus couldn't see how Gildarts reacted, but he bet he must have a pretty surprised look on his face. Obviously. Like anyone who knew them in high school. If someone had told him three years ago that he was going to fight Freed he would never have believed it.
***
“You can't handle alcohol at all,” Laxus laughed almost with tears in his eyes. Freed was trying to read something, but he was constantly swallowing the words and getting them wrong. The boy snorted and put the paper on the ground. Indeed, the friend wasn’t completely wrong. His head was spinning terribly, and he knew he wasn’t at the height of his mental faculties. Laxus's fault, however, he had proposed a drinking challenge.
“You're drunk too,” Freed said pointing a finger at him. Laxus laughed and Freed chuckled, he wasn't sure why he was doing it, but it looked funny.
The two were at Lucy's house. The girl had organized a birthday party for her, and she had invited all of her friends. Cana had brought a couple of bottles of vodka and dipped the gummy candies into a bowl by soaking them in alcohol. Freed had eaten a lot of them, found them good, and Bacchus, a guy who had sneaked into the party, had brought more drinks. And Freed had drunk them, perhaps stupidly.
“Shall we go out for a moment?” Laxus proposed, standing up. Freed nodded and stood up, but as soon as he did, his head spun and almost fell. Almost, because Laxus caught him on the fly but he too must have had little balance because they fell on a nearby sofa, bursting out laughing again.
“You're drunk” Evergreen said disgusted pushing them away and the two fell to the ground, still embraced and with their legs intertwined.
“And you're boring,” Freed said trying to sit up again, and avoid thinking about how good it was to be so attached to Laxus. With alcohol in his body, however, it was difficult not to, and drunk Laxus was much more physical than normal. In fact, as soon as they were both seated on the floor, the blonde leaned on his shoulders with a grin.
“Exactly. Boring,” he repeated. Freed nodded with conviction and Evergreen rolled his eyes.
“And you two are unbearable when you team up. Get out of here, go annoy somebody else,” she told them. Laxus stood up and held out a hand to Freed, who immediately accepted it so as not to fall again. The two stood up and giggling at something that only they understood, came out of the sitting room.
They walked down the hall, passing Gajeel and Levy who were making out great in a corner thinking they weren’t seen, and passed Loke who was doing a striptease on a table trying to attract the attention of as many girls as possible.
It took them longer than expected, because they both had little balance and leaned on each other. Before they could leave Jenny walked over to Laxus and took his face in her hands.
“You're drunk,” she said worriedly. The blonde chuckled and leaned even more against Freed.
“And you're boring,” he replied.
“Hey,” Jenny complained, but she wasn't particularly offended, probably realizing that Laxus didn't understand what he was saying. “Really, you can't walk around like this alone.”
“I'm with Freed,” the blond objected.
“He's drunk too,” she said.
“We’re just tipsy” retorted the person concerned. Jenny looked at him skeptically but Laxus nodded in agreement with his friend.
“Exactly. We're just tipsy,” he repeated and chuckled. Jenny rolled her eyes.
“Where are you going?”.
“Where are we going?” Laxus asked, turning to Freed, still with his arm wrapped around him to stand upright. Freed smiled.
“To get some air”.
“To get some air,” Laxus repeated turning to Jenny, who was looking at him worriedly. But then Hibiki grabbed her by the arm and told her that they were organizing a dance competition and she had to participate. He dragged her away without her being able to complain and Laxus and Freed walked back towards the exit.
They reached it but as soon as they were there, Freed forgot about the steps and slipped, dragging Laxus with him. The two found themselves lying between the steps and the grass of the lawn. The blonde laughed in his ear and Freed felt his face flush, but he too burst into uncontrolled laughter. They struggled to their feet.
“Where do we go?” Laxus asked.
“Let's go get ice cream in the park,” Freed replied.
“Nice idea,” the blond said and the two set off.
Luckily Lucy didn't live far from the park, and luckily there were no cars on the streets. They reached it and as soon as they got there, they realized that the Gildarts’ bar was closed. The two, however, had already lost interest in ice cream, and in agreement, without even speaking, they headed for the skatepark. Unfortunately, they didn't have skateboards, so they sat on the ground on the grass. They were silent for a few seconds, trying to recover from the hangover, at least as much as they could.
“Have you already had sex with Jenny?” Freed asked suddenly, morbidly curious and hoping the two hadn't done anything. Laxus turned to him and shook his head.
“Nah,” he replied. Freed felt the relief in his stomach and smiled as he lay on the ground, placing his hands behind his head and staring at the dark sky above him. Now that he was out in the open air and that he had walked, he was already feeling better. He didn't know if it made sense, but it seemed to him that the hangover was a bit over. Just a little, because he was still dizzy.
He turned to Laxus and watched as he tried to light a cigarette with little success. Freed found himself staring at him more than he normally would, completely in love with the sight. Good heavens, Laxus was so beautiful it was impossible not to fall in love with him.
‘Crush’ thought the boy. Being in love was too much. Freed wasn't in love, he just had a huge crush on his best friend. And a crush passed in no time. And even though it had been going on for so many months now, Freed persisted in telling himself that it would pass. Because obviously it would pass. Laxus was dating Jenny, and even if his friend didn't seem very interested in her, another girl would come anyway.
Laxus finally managed to light his cigarette and turned to Freed.
“But she gave me a blow job,” he said. Freed forced a smile but when he was drunk, he couldn't lie. He therefore remained silent not knowing what to say. “Has anyone ever done it to you?” Laxus asked.
“No”.
“Well, you should find a girl to do it for you,” Laxus commented.
Freed found himself blushing when the idea of the friend doing certain things to him crossed his mind. He chased it away, he couldn't think of Laxus like that! That was already too much.
“A boy,” escaped his lips. Laxus turned to him in surprise and Freed found himself blushing even more. Damn alcohol. “Nothing,” he laughed embarrassed. Laxus didn’t answer and continued to smoke in silence, without looking at him. For a couple of minutes Freed tried to recover, trying to control his heartbeat and not linger too long to look at his friend. He just hoped that Laxus was so drunk that he couldn't remember anything the next morning.
“Maybe a boy would be better,” Laxus said after a while. Freed turned to him with wide eyes. Had he heard right or was it his imagination?
Laxus finished smoking and crushed the cigarette butt under his shoe. He lay down beside him and turned to look at him. Freed became aware of their proximity, he could feel his friend's thick breath of smoke and alcohol on his face. Again, his heart began to pump faster. Perhaps for the alcohol or perhaps for the speech, he was able to take courage and ask what he wanted to ask him for too long now.
“You like boys?” he asked in a low voice. Laxus shrugged.
“You?” he asked and Freed almost felt his heart burst in his chest. Maybe… maybe he had a chance.
“Yes,” he replied in a whisper. Laxus looked at him without saying anything. Freed hoped the blond would tell him something, maybe tell him he liked boys too. The friend, however, didn’t speak. He kept staring at him strangely, and Freed didn't know what to think.
That was until Laxus pushed towards him. Uncertain and awkward he put their lips together and Freed immediately felt a rush of excitement rising from his stomach. For a moment he remained motionless and incredulous, and only shortly after he closed his eyes and went towards his friend. He moved his lips slightly, and Laxus cocked his head without moving away. They kissed for only a few seconds, and when they parted, they both looked surprised and red in the face.
Freed didn't believe it. Laxus had kissed him. A whirlwind of emotions was running through him, so strong that he was feeling high. Even more than it had been up to two seconds before with alcohol in the body. The blonde reached out and gently moved his hair behind his ear. Freed dared neither move nor speak, lest he break the moment.
Then Laxus pushed back towards him and again their lips joined in a second kiss.

@montanapoolservice “The concept for the name, Montana Pool Service, was sort of an homage to IPS, Wally’s deal. It started off with stickers and stuff. Simultaneously, I was getting involved with getting skateparks built in Montana... It goes all the way back to helping get a park built in the Seattle Center 25 years ago when I took some of my philanthropic funds from Pearl Jam and we gave them $50,000. We used to give all of the money from our home shows to local organizations. That was the beginning of MPS... From the very beginning, punk rock and skateboarding, have been one and the same. When I moved to Seattle, at least half the kids I knew that played in bands skateboarded. Even going back to the guys I skated with in Montana, all those guys ended up playing in bands... If you really allow yourself to feel the music or to feel what’s it’s like to ride a wave or be in the ocean or on a skateboard and carve a ten-foot wall or pull a trick or whatever, it’s all that same amount of aliveness.
