Cornbury, of New York Drag in the 18th Century
Originally posted January 28, 2009 I used to shill for a stodgy uptown joint called the New-York Historical Society. (Don’t ask about the hyphen). The oldest museum in New York, its holdings include the complete set of Audubon originals, significant paintings from the Hudson River School, the desk at which Clement Clark Moore wrote “The Night Before Christmas”, and relics from…

My buddy, Everett Quinton died tonight. He was a downtown/uptown theater icon, unofficial mayor of the Greenwich Village and one of my dearest friends for more than 35 years. When I first came to New York and heard about him, and his partner, Charles Ludlum, of Ridiculous Theater fame, I was terrified. Men in drag, performing in basement theaters for predominantly gay audiences. As a closeted gay man, there was nothing more threatening. A few years later I was performing in a off-Broadway basement in a play about phone sex, called Jerker. Charles and Everett came back stage after the show. They both had fabulous coats draped around their shoulders and were so gracious. Who are these dignified creatures? I was still awed and terrified of them. I never saw Charles again as he died of AIDS soon after. But I did see Everett. I met him when I stopped drinking in 1987. He stoped drinking five years before me and gave me his number. I have called him about any issue, mostly mundane, for more that 35 years. One of my fondest memories of him is on my first Christmas after I am disowned from my father for being gay. I was not allowed to any family event for more than a decade. The first Christmas is hard. Everett takes me to Tiffany Diner on Sheridan Square. The food is sub par, and the dreary place is filled with mostly gay men. It fills me with dread. By the end of our Christmas breakfast I look around at the other gay men and i feel lighter than when I first walk in. These men, like me, are with their families of choice. Everett was my family. My brother, mentor. He taught me how to live and accept the shame of being queer. He did it through his courage of living his true creative self and not allow his doubts and homophobic self-hatred dominate his life. Another fond memory is his starring in the Off-Broadway revival of Irma Vep. The scene is after midnight, Everett walks on stage in a nightgown and a long flowing wig of brown curls. In just the tilt of his head he is the weary countess grieving her beloved. At that moment he is the most beautiful woman I had ever seen. He is one of the the most beautiful men I have ever known. Gutted, but so grateful. (at Manhattan, New York) https://www.instagram.com/p/CnyR7Bzu4_x/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Natural Born Killers (1994)
Something To Keep in Mind While Watching: Oliver Stone has always maintained that the film is a satire on how serial killers are adored by the media for their horrific actions, and that those who claim the violence in the movie itself is a cause of societal violence have missed the point of the movie entirely.
Interesting Fact: According to Oliver Stone, the use of television commercials was an attempt to illustrate the comforting power such commercials have. Every commercial comes after a horrific moment or a flash cut of a demon, and Stone's idea was that commercials work to soothe people after they have been exposed to something extreme.
True Crime Connection: In an infamous incident after the film had been released, Oliver Stone and Time Warner were sued by Patsy Byers, with the support of author and Producer John Grisham. In March 1995, eighteen-year-old Sarah Edmondson and her boyfriend Benjamin Darras (also eighteen) allegedly dropped acid and watched this movie. Later that night, Sarah shot and paralyzed Byers, a store clerk in Ponchatoula, and Benjamin killed cotton gin Manager William Savage in Hernando, Mississippi. John Grisham was a personal friend of Savage's, and after the murder, Grisham publicly accused Oliver Stone of being irresponsible in making the film, arguing that filmmakers should be held accountable for their work when it incites violent behavior. Byers decided to take legal action against Stone and the studio, and supported by Grisham, she used a "product liability" claim in the lawsuit, which argued that Stone had incited the teenagers to commit the crime. Initially, the case was dismissed in January 1997, on the grounds that filmmakers and production companies are protected by the First Amendment. However, in May 1998, the Intermediate Louisiana Court of Appeals overturned the lower court's decision, and the case went ahead. The attorneys for Byers' attempted to prove that Oliver Stone and Time Warner were culpable in the murder and in Byers' injury because they had purposefully meant to incite violence by "distributing a film they knew, or should have known would cause and inspire people to commit crimes." All of Hollywood eagerly awaited the outcome of the trial, because if Stone was found guilty, it would mean a drastic reexamination of the industry practices and would carry all kinds of far reaching implications as regards the content of movies. However, in a landmark decision, Byers' action was thrown out of court in March 2001, and its dismissal was confirmed by the Louisiana Court of Appeal in June 2002.
This is a neat connection, but Wayne Gale says the following referring to your average television consumer: “Do you think that those nitwits out there in Zombieland remember anything?” Woody Harrelson would go on to star in Zombieland 15 years after this film was released.
ESE: 100/100

R.I.P. Everett Quinton
I was running around from pillar to post yesterday so couldn’t respond as immediately as I would have liked to the sad news of the passing of the great stage star Everett Quinton (b. 1952). I’d only learned recently that he was unwell from some of his regular cast members. He’d developed glioblastoma, suffered a rough course of treatments, his decline hastened by a bout of Covid. Celebration 20!, New York's 20th Annual Lesbian & Gay Pride Rally, hosted by Heritage of Pride, was held on Saturday, June 24, 1989 in Central Park. Under an alternately cloudy and sunny sky, 2,000 participants were welcomed to the Great Lawn by co-emcees Kate Clinton, a celebrated stand-up comedian, and Everett Quinton, Artistic Director of the Ridiculous Theatrical Company. [...]
A potpourri of viewpoints and attitudes provided irreverence mixed with anger, reminiscence and joy well into the afternoon, At 2:30, as the Lesbian & Gay Big Apple Corps played "I Am What I Am," the AIDS Coalition to Unleash Power entered the Great Lawn, capping off their march from Sheridan Square with a standing ovation from the audience already in attendance, The group was large and loud, and their entrance swelled the crowd to nearly twice its size.
Tim Powers, an ACT UP member, person with AIDS and one of the architects of the "Montreal Manifesto," a document asserting the rights of PWAs, challenged the policies of Governor Cuomo and Mayor Koch in one of the afternoon's strongest speeches.

"She was the seductive queen of Egypt and he one of the generals of Rome. Their tempestuous love affair would tear empires apart. Nicole Ari Parker (Boogie Nights, Soul Food) and Esau Pritchett (Fences) join director Emily Mann for this sizzling production of William Shakespeare's Antony and Cleopatra, one of literature's great masterpieces. Full of romance, passion, and betrayal, don't miss this intimate tale of two legendary lovers whose desires shaped the destiny of the world."
"Indeed, if Romeo and Juliet is the Bard's take on the perils and passions of first love, Antony & Cleopatra is his ode to the smoldering and complex nature of last love. It is the work of a master playwright at the top of his game."
The cast also includes Philippe Bowgen as Agrippa, Keith Eric Chappelle as Soothsayer/Menas, Zainab Jah as Charmian, Mairin Lee as Iras/Octavia, Warner Miller as Eros, Everett Quinton as Mardian/Clown, Tobias Segal as Octavius Caesar, Thom Sesma as Lepidus/Scarus/Diomedes and Michael Siberry as Enobarbus.
