Clay pot cooler by Lea Lorenz. (display at Dutch Design Week 2023)
The bottom dish is filled with water, and as it travels up into the clay pot and evaporates, the interior of the pot becomes cool. Great for hot and dry climates, the original pot-in-pot method of cooling is well-researched, simple, accessible and cheap to produce. The interior of the pot can be protected from stains with waterproof glaze.

All kinds of meds will mess with the way your body processes water!
As someone who lives in a region that is regularly above 100F (~37C) 6-9 months of the year, here are some things I’ve learned living here:
1) stay out of the heat whenever possible, if you have to walk outside for a bit try to “building hop” (instead of taking the sidewalks, go through an adjacent buildings publicly accessible spaces that parallel the street). Do NOT spend more than 30 minutes outside/without AC, MAX. If you can, park closer to work, or if you can’t limit outside time to <30 mins, work from home. It’s ok to tell your boss you’re doing this for your own heath instead of asking for approval. This is one of those times it’s better to ask for forgiveness.
2) If your job requires you to be outside for longer definitely call your boss, make sure there’s AC nearby you can use frequently (remember a car takes ~10 minutes to really be able to start cooking you off and you will be sweaty), wear loose & long shorts (you don’t want your legs finding that one bit of exposed metal bench), brings towel to sit on, and open doors with, low cut & sleeveless top, athletic materials NOT cotton, an extra large water bottle (YES, take a small sip every 20 minutes or so), and don’t be ashamed about being that person carrying an umbrella!!! Also wear shoes with a solid base (no heels), and good traction. Keep your hair off your neck and out of your face. And make sure any hat you bring is BREATHABLE!!! You lose a lot of heat through your HEAD. And most of us have hair slowing that process down already. Hats will help with shade, but NOT if they overheat you!!!. When you get to shade, take OFF the hat!! Use it as a fan! Bringing a hand fan if you have one can actually be very helpful too! Slow fanning helps too!
3) if you start to feel hotter than you usually do when exercising, find AC IMMEDIATELY. Same goes for even a slight headache (even if you think it’s because it’s bright outside, it’s NOT, you’re overheating), get TO AC!!!
4) when you get inside you will want to reach for COLD water, DONT. Cold water is actually harder for your body to process, and will take longer to get into your system. Drink ROOM TEMP WATER!!! Not hot water, but not cold either. Your body will absorb it faster. And DONT put ice in it! If someone offers a cold water ACCEPT IT and use it like a cold pack to cool yourself off. If it’s the only water you have, definitely drink it in frequent small sips (just keep it open in your hand, sip, cool wrists, sip, cool forehead, sip, cool cheek, repeat). If you have room temp water drink that first, and just use the cold one as a cool pack.
5) If you are still warm grab a popsicle/ice cream, AND refill that water, AND put a damp cloth on the back of your neck and/or forehead and/or wrists. Your blood vessels are closer to the surface here and you can use evaporative cooking to speed up the process. Sometimes I use one washcloth to just wipe ROOM TEMP water on each of the aforementioned spots, then sit next to a fan to cool my neck and face and blow a little air on my wrists. I know, “but popsicles are cold and you said NO to cold water!” Key difference: you’re not bumping down the popsicle. Even if you eat it fast, your still chewing it which gives it time to normalize and get closer to your body temp. Also note you’re gonna want to intersperse big sips of room temp water in between bites of poosicle. Your throat also feel like it contracts a bit with coldness which will actually make eating cold foods harder. But sip room temp water between bites, and problem averted!
6) sit down. No matter what happens next your body needs rest. Don’t push yourself to keep going. Take it easy on yourself. Even if you’re body is more familiar with these temperatures it’s not really good for you. Be nice to your body. It’s working harder than usual. Also DO NOT STAND UP FAST!!! Take it easy! Your body is already trying to compensate for being overheated. Go slow. ESPECIALLY if you decide to lay down (like on cold tile or something) instead of sit! STAY SITTING until your body has returned to normal!!! ONLY get up for a SHORT walk to get more electrolytes, salty snacks, and hydration!!!
7) when it gets that hot outside, businesses are not allowed to force you to pay for water!!! If you walk in and ask at the pickup counter “could I please get some water” they HAVE to give it to you. LEGALLY! It would be really bad for business if they didn’t! Ask if they will put it straight into your water bottle. Some won’t (it’s a sanitary thing), which is fine, just ask for a glass/cup of water and they will let you pour it into the water bottle. Many baristas/hosts will bring you several glasses until your water bottle is full if they know that refilling it is your goal!!! And they will likely also usher you to a chair. Accept it! Also good for when waiting for a bus!!! I’ve seen a lot of people pass out while waiting for public transport! Find a nearby shop/lobby with a window view of the bus stop and wait IN AC!!!
8) ELECTROLYTES!!!! When you sweat you lose salt as well. Salt is the means by which your cells absorb water (osmosis). There’s a lot more to it, that’s an over simplified version, but you get the point. You don’t just need water, you need salt, sugar, and other electrolytes to replenish you! I find salty chips help. especially if I can’t seem to retain the water I’m drinking, if you gotta pee frequently but you still are dehydrated (chapped lips, cotton tongue, feeling like you’ve got a uti threatening to make a appearance, especially the ONSET of those feelings, etc), grab some salty chips and whatever NON CAFFEINATED drink sounds most appealing! If water doesn’t sound good to you, THIS IS WHY! It needs more than just hydration! Listen to your body! With ONE EXCEPTION: if you want to reach for an energy drink DONT!!! Energy drinks increase your heart rate. Guess what else also does that? You guessed it, excessive heat! And because the human body is delightful, they don’t just add together, they multiply! Use a little LESS caffeine than you usually do on especially hot days!!! If you heart feels like it’s beating out of your chest, guess what? Get indoors, hydrate, and eat something!!! Dilute that caffeine in you with good things that your body actually needs!!!
9) agin with the meds thing!!! Be aware of th warning labels! Those symptoms are even more likely when paired with potential onset of heatstroke!!!
10) SWAMP COOLERS DO NOT COUNT AS AC!!! The hotter it is outside, the more water the air can hold. And when it’s muggy, you feel even hotter. Swamp coolers PUMP running water past a fan. It doesn’t really cool things off so much as it humidifies EVERYTHING. Avoid swamp coolers!!!however misters are acceptable for a little while, they can prolong your time outside. But swamp coolers are more like humidifiers for when you have a cold, but like, the less useful more sticky version… I don’t understand why they are a thing (unless paired with a powerful dehumidifier). Just avoid them at all costs.
11) Evaporative cooling works when applied directly (see above note about washcloths, point 5, I think). And I have mini evaporative coolers that help.
Heres how to build a mini EVAPORATIVE COOLER (NOT A SUB FOR AC):
- get a fan, paper towel or otherwise thin towel (hand/kitchen towel sized that you can see light through if you hold it up), shallow bowl (needs to hold ~3cm/1in deep of water and be as wide as the towel), and something you can drape the towel such that the fan air will still be able to go through the towel and come out the other side.
- Soak the paper towels in the water dish and KEEP THE DISH OUT. Drape the towel over something in FRONT of the fan so that the fan air goes through said towel in order to get to you. Keep the bottom edge of the paper towel in the water dish and fill it with water. This way you won’t have to keep dunking it, if will just absorb water until the bowl is dry.
- Yes it has to go THROUGH it NOT AROUND, that just won’t cut it. That’s also why paper is better than an actual hand towel or something. Paper is both lightweight and air goes through it better, I’ve found. Whatever you do NEVER drape the towel directly over the fan. Your just asking for an electrical fire that way. Keep the plug and any power cords (even internal to the fan) AWAY from the water.
- this is the same principle that evaporative ACs use! They just use a paper cloth fiber based filter (with plastic edges, cardboard edges will not hold shape when they get soggy) or a corrugated cardboard to soak up water from a water tank. That’s the difference between a swamp cooler and an evaporative one. Evaporative soak up water from a tray, swamp pump water and really function like a crappy mist machine more than an AC.
- FYI, they will NOT cool off an entire room, even if you get more than 1. They only mildly cool off the space directly in front of them. They are NOT replacements for real AC, they are just tools to help cool off a little bit faster!
MORAL OF THE STORY: if your body feels off, LISTEN TO IT!!! Find REAL AC. Find ROOM TEMP liquids for consumption and cooling materials. Find a place to sit (cold tile can be surprisingly comfy, there’s no shame in becoming a starfish on your kitchen tiles, man). Find salty snacks to help your body absorb that hydration (careful not to over do these tho! Start with a small bag/bowl, then wait like 10 minutes after you’ve finished them before getting more). Remember, your body is trying hard to keep you stable, respect that and be kind to yourself!!! It’s ok to take it easy until temps are back to what your body is used to!!!
Got a scenario I didn’t cover? TAG ME and I’ll see what advice I can give. I don’t have all the answers, but I’ve been round this block before and I will do what I can for you, friend!!!
PLEASE REBLOG TO SAVE A FRIEND IN NEED REGARDLESS OF LOCATION ON THIS GLOBE!!!

Balance Your Home’s Humidity for Maximum Cool
Tumblr media
Want to know the secret to staying comfortable all summer long without racking up high electricity bills? Manage both your home’s temperature and humidity levels. Of course, lowering the thermostat helps, but for the greatest impact, you need the right level of humidity. It’s like how a drier day feels so much better than a muggy, sticky one.
Let’s dive into humidity and how you can maximize your home’s comfort with simple, portable air comfort solutions to reduce costs in the long run.
First things first: What’s humidity?
