I swear to God, if Movie Amy ends up as just a tough, take-charge, boring"Girlboss", I'm gonna actually choke to death.
As someone who engages with girl-targeted media with regularity, I can say with certainty that people can write female leads as compelling and interesting while still allowing them to display and even indulge in traditionally feminine traits, and not just lean on "badass".
Let Amy get excited at a pretty dress, THEN she beats Knuckles in an arm wrestling match.
Let Amy see a flower field and want to frolic in it, THEN she can crush a robot 8 times her size.
Let Amy talk about her dreams of finding her one true love, THEN she can punt Metal Sonic into a mountain.
If they HAVE to have a generic badass girl character, use Rouge or Blaze. Not that I want them reduced to such, but that personality would suit them WAY better than it would Amy.
I feel the same way about the games and the rest of the franchise. Somebody on the Sonic writing team keeps trying to push "badass tough girl" Amy and I'm so tired of it.
Evan Stanley please write for Amy in the movie please. You actually do her right.

the female writers in the sonic franchise are really underappreciated and have given us some of the best stories. tania del rio gave us the famous stargazing story which threw sallicole into the spotlight. her writing of sally is THE best characterization of her in the pre flynn era. aleah baker was responsibe for some of the best sonic universe arcs, including sparks of life (noticing a trend with female writers being himejoshis for sallicole and i'm here for it). evan stanley has fantastic art and i especially adore her writing of amy, she really gets her character. all the discourse has been focused on the male writers of the franchise, especially flynn, but the female writers are largely forgotten. we also need more female writers for the games so that the girls are treated with the care they deserve

HAPPY PRIDE FROM THE IDW SONIC SHOWDOWN! Made it just in time before pride finishes here in the UK, but pride lasts all year around anyway. However you celebrate and whatever flags you use to represent yourselves, I hope you have a good one Here's a little doodle featuring characters from IDW and a few other Sonic comics who have some degree of queer to them, either in the comics, word of god or popular headcanons. I wanted to include more (shout out to Mighty's gay dad and his dinosaur bf from StC!), but ran out of time and space A little more info about each character, in case anyone's curious:
From top left: Tekno the Canary - From Fleetway Sonic the Comic, a character widely embraced by the queer community. In a conclusion to StC written by series writer Nigel Kitching and released on StC:Online, Tekno is revealed to be in a relationship and have a child with Amy Rose. As of this year, Tekno's creator Lew Stringer gave his blessing for fans to think of her as non-binary, even if he himself wrote her as female - leading some fans to embrace Tekno as she/they Gold the Tenrec - From the Archie Sonic Comics, Gold has been stated by creator Evan Stanley to be attracted to women, although Stanley wasn't sure if Gold was strictly bi or gay, which is why I opted to give her the rainbow flag here Tangle & Whisper - As close as we can possibly get to being a couple without officially being a couple. Hopefully one day! I was actually going to use the rainbow flag for them as well, but as of this month's issue, the duo appeared with a lesbian patterned sky in the background, so they got the lesbian flag Dr. Starline - Headcanoned by some to be a transman because his spurs (which are naturally occurring in male platypuses) are artificial. It's also generally accepted (I think??) that his idolising of Eggman may be romantic. I did a poll for which flag to give him and the gay flag won, so he got that one Nite & Don - Our married bird guys! Good for them! Again, I gave them the rainbow pride flag because it hasn't been stated (that I know) if they're gay, bi, pan or otherwise, but they're happy and together either way Sally Acorn (with tiny Nicole!) - My childhood fave from the Archie Comics. This chipmunk is bisexual and there is nothing you can do about it Lanolin the Sheep - Many of us are optimistic that Lanolin might quietly be the trans rep we've been hoping for from Sonic, as she's a girl sheep with horns Cheese the Chao - As chao are non-binary, I included Cheese to represent them, because Cheese is cool Sonic the Hedgehog - A touchstone to many in the community. I included the asexual, aromantic and trans flags in his speed trail, as Sonic won the t-boy swag tournament on tumblr and Sonic/no one was voted the best Sonic ship on tumblr. As a trans aroace person myself, Sonic's lack of interest in romance and conformity was always inspirational to me growing up. The rainbow facepaint is because I'm sure that he's as important to other members of the community in their identities as well As always, these are my readings and takes on these characters that may not align with your own or be canon in anyway. But I hope that you can find joy and peace in pride as I do regardless :3

Listen, Amy is in my top three of fav Sonic characters and I agree with a lot of points in this post. Specifically that people don’t take notice of some of her best or badass qualities.
However, I think saying that Amy was never intended to be Sonic’s love interest is a bit disingenuous.
If we are to believe Evan Stanley, a writer for the Sonic IDW comics, then it would seem like Sonic Team does consider Amy to be Sonic’s love interest. It’s just that neither is pursuing a relationship as of now.
To me, the term love interest is more synonymous with having or developing a crush. Not so much being in a romantic relationship.
I agree the Amy was never meant to be Sonic’s girlfriend or lover when she was introduced. I also believe that Sonic Team will never really make Sonamy canon.
I just don’t think that statement is accurate.
(Note: I will say, it’s completely possible that Sonic Team could developed Amy with her intended arc and not thought of her as a love interest (even though they kinda got off track after at max Sonic Adventure 2, game wise). I’m going off of more recent information and certain portrayals of their relationship. Sonic CD will be 30-years-old in Sept, Sonic Team’s stance on Amy being a love interest could have absolutely changed in that time. I just don’t know of any evidence of Amy not be Sonic’s love interest. I know she was kinda suppose to develop out of her obsessive crush to where they can be friends. The evidence I lack is about whether Sonic was always meant to develop/be more shy in regards to his feelings for her, or if that is a recent development that has been hinted at. Again, I don’t think it will ever become canon, but it seems like more Sonic things have been implying that Sonic returns her feelings. If it ever comes out that Sonic was never meant to have/develop romantic feelings for Amy, then I will concede. Also, this isn’t a post saying you must ship Sonamy or that Amy isn’t bi/pan, I just wanted to have a discussion.)
me explaining to people who don’t know sonic lore that amy was never meant to be sonic’s love interest, when the sonic team was told to make a gf for sonic they said he wasn’t the type to be in a committed relationship and so made amy as the child with a hero crush who follows him around and then in sonic adventure the first plot-based game despite her being aged up her entire character arc was focused on growing into her own as a hero outside of sonic and after trying and failing to build on the love interest aspect naturally she’s been consistently portrayed for YEARS the same way she was intended, as someone with a crush but who’s moved past it and can be his friend without trying to force him to date her and is a strong character in her own right and can summon infinite hammers from midair no joke she did that onscreen

Who do you think does a better job of characterization in IDW? Evan Stanley or Ian Flynn?
It has become very hard to distinguish the two if you don't know which one of them wrote which issue. It feels like Stanley tries her best to closely follow Flynn's characterization.
I still think she's the better writer of the two - her Shadow was horrible, but her Sonic is pretty decent, especially in that famous scene in #49 where he comforts Belle. There is one scene, before the Roadtrip arc, where Sonic, Tails and Amy are all chatting together, and it's very wholesome and IC :)
Tumblr media
Her biggest flaw IMO is that she relies too much on cheap angst, as seen with Belle, Surge in the current arc and Kit in #53 (which also incidentally made Sonic look like the most insensitive asshole ever). But if I have to pick my poison, I'll pick her angst over Flynn's obsession with being "meta" and his hypocritical Sonic.

So how come being a fan previously is only a bad thing in Ian Flynn's case? It doesn't seem to apply to the ten or so other writers who worked on the comics, never mind the artists (like Evan Stanley, still doing fan comics, or Tyson Hesse, now doing official animation). Meanwhile, with "professional" artist and writers we had Sonic with ears coming out of his forehead and Amy Rose flying, so it seems like it's not a bad thing to employ people familiar with the series, does it?
I should probably stress before I go on that I still think Ian is one of the best writers that the Sonic comics had. Compared to his predecessors he’s a marked improvement, and while there are details that I like more about previous runs, it’s mostly the small stuff. However, I still think that a large portion of his run, including 172-179, 197-212, and 230-247, has a lot of mediocre, bad, or outright awful stories, or even just ones that could’ve done with a few more rewrites before approval.
The chief difference between Ian and people like Evan or Tyson is that their content either is or was good (I lost interest in GotF around the time Evan decided to undo every small win that the heroes got within a page or two of it happening, and also decided to portray Scourge and Fiona’s abusive relationship in a positive light and use it to squeeze sympathy out of a character who casually decided to blow up two planets just to show off), whereas Ian’s fan-comic, Other-M, was utter dogshit.
Now, as for what’s bad about Ian being a fan-writer, it’s because there are certain things you can do in fanfics that you can’t do in official material.
If a fan-writer wants to leave characters out or change how they’re portrayed to suit their story, or experiment with something that isn’t guaranteed to pay off, they can, and nothing is going to stop them. Maybe they want to change backstories? Go right ahead. Nonsensical crack-shipping? Go nuts. Introducing an overpowered Sonic recolour that that beats everybody else up, steals Sonic’s girlfriend, and then spends the rest of his existence being a thoroughly unlikable cockwaffle? Well, I mean, they probably shouldn’t, but they can. (And yes, I am aware that Ian didn’t create Scourge on his lonesome, but he introduced all the worst parts of him)
But when you’re writing for an official book, that changes. You’ve got to make sure that what you’re putting out matches up with what came before, and since this is a licensed book, with what the license-holder wants for the franchise as a whole.
There are elements that have to be left at the door, and Ian didn’t do that. I call him a fan-writer because most of his work reads like fanfiction, and not good fanfiction. There are good fanfics. There are some really good ones. But at the same time, there are elements of those fics that should not be brought into official material, like the above-mentioned crackships, backstory retcons, and tryhard recolours.
Linking back to Other-M, there are a lot of similarities between it and his ‘magnum opus’ within the official comic, the travesty that was the Mecha Sally saga.
Both start with an interesting concept and then quickly fuck it up, both have massive tone problems, both completely fail to capitalise on their premise, both are drowning in unnecessary subplots that turn them into a gordian knot of confused and opposing plot threads, and both are overly long and bloated. The Mecha Sally arc didn’t collapse under its own weight like Other-M did, but given how often Ian failed to give his stories a satisfying conclusion, I wager that, had he had the chance to finish it, I’d be adding that to the list as well.

Best Movies Coming to Netflix in August 2021
https://ift.tt/3yg0gQx
As quickly as the summer movie season of 2021 seemed to come upon us, it’s already about to begin its long, languid slide through the dog days of August into fall. That’s not to say that theaters won’t still have plenty of interesting fare to encounter, with films like The Suicide Squad, Free Guy, Respect, Candyman and The Night House all on deck. Hopefully the other hideous sequel happening at the moment — Pandemic 2: The Delta Variant — won’t set any of these potential hits back.
In the spirit of keeping August entertaining, Netflix is rolling out a slew of new streaming additions as well, including an underrated Spielberg gem, fantastic teen comedies both old and new, a couple of stoner classics and perhaps the finest film from the canon of one of the modern era’s most revered directors. We’ve rounded up our recommendations below, and hope you stay cool and healthy whatever you’re watching!
Universal
cnx.cmd.push(function() { cnx({ playerId: "106e33c0-3911-473c-b599-b1426db57530", }).render("0270c398a82f44f49c23c16122516796"); });
Beethoven (1992)
August 1
Hollywood in the 1990s was a glorious and furry era when studio executives never met a family movie that couldn’t be improved with the addition of at least one animal character. Beethoven is one of the most successful examples of this winning formula. Directed by Brian Levant from a script co-written by John Hughes himself (alongside Mystic Pizza co-writer Amy Holden Jones), Beethoven is basically the story of how a husband and father, Charles Grodin’s George Newton, feels threatened by the attention his family gives their new dog, a St. Bernard named Beethoven.
George eventually works through some of his issues and accepts the charming Beethoven into the family, a process that comes to a head when Beethoven is dog-napped into an animal experiment scheme run by evil veterinarian Dr. Herman Varnick. (Honestly, the plot isn’t dissimilar to the story in cinematic masterpiece Paddington.) The deep supporting cast includes Bonnie Hunt, David Duchovny, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Oliver Platt, Stanley Tucci, and Everybody Loves Raymond‘s Patricia Heaton. The film’s sequel, Beethoven Second, will also be available on Netflix starting on August 1st.
Dreamworks
Catch Me If You Can (2002)
August 1
As one of Steven Spielberg’s most charming and laid-back efforts, Catch Me If You Can is a breezy and star-studded entertainment. The story is loosely based on the real grifts of conman Frank Abagnale Jr., who beginning as a teenager was able to pass himself off as a pilot, lawyer, doctor, and many other things. But really, this is a cat-and-mouse chase movie between a still baby-faced Leonardo DiCaprio as Abagnale and Tom Hanks as the FBI stiff who hunted him down. It’s all good stuff, with the movie enjoying a light touch and fresh take on Spielberg’s favorite subject matter: fathers and sons.
Warner Bros. Pictures
Deep Blue Sea (1999)
August 1
A shockingly entertaining B-movie about a bunch of genetically engineered super-sharks which break out and take over a testing facility, this is horror silliness at its best with great turns from Samuel L Jackson, Thomas Jane, Saffron Burrows and LL Cool J. Partially shot on sets built around the same water tanks used for Titanic, with animatronic and CGI sharks, Deep Blue Sea is action-packed, schlocky fun from director Renny Harlin (Cliffhanger).
STX Entertainment
The Edge of Seventeen (2016)
August 1
A bit like Lady Bird before there was a Lady Bird, Kelly Fremon Craig’s Edge of Seventeen is an underrated gem that stars a teenage Hailee Steinfeld as a young woman stumbling through an especially awkward time in her life. Steinfeld is terrific in her best performance since True Grit, playing Nadine as a bundle of insecurities, yet still nobody’s victim. Also of special value is Craig’s hilarious and authentic script, which captures the specificity of growing up in the social media age while being near-universal in its accessibility and empathy for a wide ensemble which also includes Kyra Sedgwick, Haley Lu Richardson, and Woody Harrelson.
Paramount
Ferris Bueller’s Day Off (1986)
August 1
Just in time for the dog days of summer comes one of the best summer movies ever. Relying on charm and sharp characterization instead of special effects for its spectacle, John Hughes’ Ferris Bueller’s Day Off is a truly great teen comedy that follows the easygoing bon vivant (or secret sociopath?) of a high school’s senior class when he decides to take the day off in the best fashion: by faking he’s sick and then guilting his BFF into giving him the keys to his dad’s Ferrari.

Never Have I Ever Season 2 Review: This Netflix Teen Comedy Deserves to Run and Run
By Louisa Mellor
It’s silly yet curiously honest stuff about the pressures of young adult life, at least in 1980s suburban America, and a beguiling showcase for an ensemble that includes Matthew Broderick in his coolest role, as well as Alan Ruck, Mia Sara, Jennifer Grey, and a seriously stoned Charlie Sheen. If you haven’t seen it yet, you’re due.
Warner Bros. Pictures
Inception (2010)
August 1 Still Christopher Nolan’s most complete and satisfying film to date (yes, even more so than The Dark Knight), Inception is a cerebral sci-fi set of stacking dolls combined with a rollicking James Bond adventure that all happens to be mostly situated inside one guy’s head. Leonardo DiCaprio leads a team of professional thieves who steal things from people’s minds — only this time they’re hired to implant an idea, even if they have to dive deep into the mark’s subconscious to do it.
Mind-bending imagery and several jaw-dropping action sequences are wrapped around a surprisingly emotional core, with only the usual unwieldy exposition there to remind you that there are some things Nolan may never get right.
Lionsgate
The Lincoln Lawyer (2011)
August 1 Based on a novel by crime writer Michael Connelly, this gripping, suspenseful 2011 drama arguably kicked off “the McConaissance,” a shift from rom-coms to more serious roles by Matthew McConaughey that launched a new, largely acclaimed phase of his career.
McConaughey is formidable as attorney Mickey Haller, a slick lawyer who works out of his Lincoln Town Car and undergoes a crisis of conscience as his new case starts to feel disturbingly like an old one. In addition to McConaughey stepping up his game, this Brad Furman-directed thriller is the kind of character-driven, literate melodrama we don’t see much on the big screen anymore — although we see plenty of them these days on, of course, Netflix.
Paramount Classics
The Machinist (2004)
August 1 Director Brad Anderson followed up his cult classic 2001 horror effort Session 9 with this surreal, Kafka-esque psychological thriller. Christian Bale plays Trevor Reznik, whose inability to sleep leads him to cause an accident at his industrial job that costs a co-worker (Michael Ironside) his arm. Already physically and mentally deteriorating, Reznik begins an even deeper descent as he tries to unravel what’s happening to him and why. Bale is intense and viscerally shocking as the emaciated Reznik, with his riveting performance anchoring an atmospheric, visually striking film that is sometimes an exercise in style over substance.
New Line Cinema
Magnolia (1999)
August 1
Boogie Nights pushed director Paul Thomas Anderson into the spotlight, but it was his massive, sprawling jigsaw puzzle Magnolia that made him into a superstar filmmaker. Following multiple narratives and numerous characters all finally brought together by a climactic storm of frogs, this is high art packed with standout moments.

Top Gun: Maverick Footage Shows Tom Cruise in Real Jet Behind the Scenes

Best Modern Horror Movies
By Don Kaye
Tom Cruise is electric as a toxic motivation speaker, Julianne Moore is brittle and tragic as a trophy wife who has grown to love her dying husband, while the burgeoning relationship between Melora Walters’ addict and John C. Reilly’s cop added sweetness and hope to a tale of messed up people and damaged families. Epic.
Sony PIctures
Pineapple Express (2008)
August 1 After its trailer introduced everyone to M.I.A.’s amazing “Paper Planes,” Pineapple Express’s work was already done. It didn’t even have to produce a satisfyingly funny movie on top of that. Thankfully the filmmaking team of Seth Rogen, Evan Goldberg, and David Gordon Green decided to give us one anyway, because Pineapple Express is the ideal of the little-seen-or-attempted stoner action comedy.
Rogen stars as process server and marijuana enthusiast Dale Denton, while James Franco portrays his annoying drug dealer Saul Silver. When the pair witness a murder, they are forced to flee hitmen, a pair of corrupt cops, and worst of all, Danny McBride. The Rogen/Goldberg comedy catalog has very few misses and this one is particularly excellent.
Universal Pictures
Seabiscuit (2003)
August 1
No one would ever accuse Gary Ross’ Seabiscuit of being subtle. With its voice-of-god narration by Ken Burns fave David McCoullough, which helpfully spells out the themes of the movie every few scenes, and its achingly sentimental score and dialogue, Seabiscuit is a Cinderella story which all but asserts its titular race horse ended the Great Depression. Yet Ross captures some of the simple American grandeur of Laura Hillenbrand’s non-fiction source material book, as well as the beauty of this true story where a horse that everyone counted out as worthless was nursed by three men into becoming one of the greatest racing animals of all-time.
It’s the type of feel-good yarn that won people over in the 1930s and which is still winning now. When coupled with a handful of strong performances, including from Jeff Bridges, Chris Cooper, Tobey Maguire, and a seriously underrated Elizabeth Banks, you have a crowd-pleaser that actually pleases.
Paramount Pictures
Team America: World Police (2004)
August 1 Roger Ebert’s one-star review of Trey Parker and Matt Stone’s Team America: World Police sums up the film’s nonsensical political stance nicely. “I wasn’t offended by the movie’s content so much as by its nihilism,” the great film critic wrote.
Rog was right to criticize Team America’s incomprehensible worldview. Nearly 20 years later, its seeming position that Alec Baldwin and Kim Jong-Il are equally bad hasn’t aged that well (despite Mr. Baldwin’s best efforts). But it’s hard to argue that the South Park creators’ nihilism doesn’t lead to some great comedy. The novelty of Thunderbirds-style puppets saving the world amid graphic sex acts and voluminous barfing never quite wears off.

Allison Mack leaves Federal court Tuesday, April 24, 2018, in the Brooklyn borough of New York. Mack, an actress best known for playing a young Superman's friend, has been granted bail while fighting charges that she helped recruit women into a cult-like group. A federal judge in Brooklyn agreed Tuesday to release Allison Mack on $5 million bond and place her under home detention in California. She'll be living with her parents. AP Photo/Frank Franklin II NXIVM was formed by Keith Raniere and Nancy Salzman in the 1990s and billed itself as a self-help multi-level marketing company. The company ceased operations last year after a New York Times exposé alleged that female members were used as sex slaves within the group. The exposé prompted a federal investigation, and several members, including Raniere and "Smallville" actress Allison Mack, are now facing criminal charges. Visit INSIDER.com for more stories. When NXIVM first formed in the 1990s, it was billed as a self-help multi-level marketing company that offered professional development seminars. But over the last year and half, the organization has fallen apart after a New York Times exposé alleged that female members were branded and used as sex slaves by the group's founder, Keith Raniere. The exposé prompted a federal investigation and the arrests of several members, including Raniere and "Smallville" actress Allison Mack. In recent months three defendants have pleaded guilty and admitted to allegations made in The Times' piece, including blackmail and enslaving members. NXIVM has since shut down, but Raniere has yet to take a plea deal. Here's everything you need to know about NXIVM and the criminal case against the organization: Keith Raniere launched NXIVM as a self-help company in the 1990s. Photo by Amy Luke/Getty Images NXIVM — pronounced like "nexium" — is a self-help multi-level marketing company in Albany, New York. A self-help guru named Keith Raniere, and a former psychiatric nurse and consultant named Nancy Salzman, founded the business in 1998. Over the next twenty years, some 16,000 people enrolled in courses through NXIVM, which describes itself as "a community guided by humanitarian principles that seek to empower people and answer important questions about what it means to be human." Most people enrolled in NXIVM through its Executive Success Programs (ESP), a series of workshops designed to "actualize human potential" that cost up to $7,500. Founder Keith Raniere was born in 1960 in Brooklyn. He graduated from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy, New York in 1982. The second founder, Nancy Salzman, was born in 1954 in Newark, New Jersey, and later obtained a nursing license. Raniere's website describes him as a "the conceptual founder of NXIVM" as well as a prolific inventor and writer. Salzman's website touts her "thirty years of intensive study and practice in the fields of healthcare, human potential and human empowerment" and her "incredible wealth of knowledge, wisdom and experience." Forbes named several members in a 2003 report, including businesswoman Sheila Johnson and the daughter of former Mexican President Vicente Fox. Others who reportedly attended ESP sessions include Dynasty star Linda Evans and Virgin founder Richard Branson, according to Macleans. Seagram's liquor heirs Clare and Sara Bronfman lost more than $100 million investing in the organization, according to Vanity Fair. The meaning of the company's name, which is pronounced like the heartburn medication Nexium, is unclear. If they defaulted, they became a slave of the person who loaned them money. Journalists started labeling the company as a pyramid scheme in the early 2000s. Raniere had signed 250,000 people up for Consumers' Buyline, another multi-level marketing company. This one claimed to obtain products and services at a significant discount. In 1993, the New York Attorney General filed a lawsuit that accused Consumers Buyline of being a pyramid scheme. Raniere never admitted wrongdoing, and instead settled for $40,000. Forbes' 2003 article, titled "Cult of Personality," investigated whether or not NXIVM also portrayed pyramid-scheme-like tendencies. Seagram's late CEO, Edgar Bronfman Sr., who had previously taken courses with NXIVM, told the magazine: "I think it's a cult." Raniere, Salzman, and Bronfman's daughter Sara were reportedly upset about his remark, according to Vanity Fair. Cult experts told local media that Raniere was probably running a cult in 2012. Photo by Amy Luke/Getty Images The Times Union, a local paper that serves the upstate New York area surrounding Albany, published an article in 2012 in which it questioned NXIVM's motives. "Some experts say Keith Raniere, the guru behind the unusual training business, is really a cult leader," the article said. The article said Raniere was called the "Vanguard" within the group, while devotees called Salzman "Prefect." The Times Union reported that within NXIVM, there was a "close knit" group of women who "tended to [Raniere], paid his bills," and "satisfied his sexual needs." Cult Tracker Rick Ross told the paper that NXIVM was "one of the most extreme groups [he had] ever dealt with in the sense of how tightly wound it is around the leader, Keith Raniere." October 17, 2017: The New York Times published an exposé about NXIVM’s branding ritual and sex slave allegations. AP Photo/Kevin Hagen The New York Times exposé featured an interview with former NXIVM member Sarah Edmondson and her experience with the organization. Edmondson claimed that Salzman's daughter, Lauren Salzman, had recruited her into a secret organization within NXIVM in the mid-2000s. She claimed she had to turn over damaging information before joining that was held by NXIVM leaders as "collateral." Several women who were in the group told The Times that the organization inside NXIVM consisted of distinct circles, each led by a "master" who would control a number of sex slaves. The name of the organization was later revealed to be called Dominus Obsequious Sororium, which loosely translates from Latin to "lord over the obedient female companions" according to a later feature on NXIVM by The New York Times. The group was called DOS for short. Edmondson showed The Times a scar resembling Raniere's initials, and said every woman in the group had one. Dynasty actress Catherine Oxenberg also spoke to The Times, claiming her daughter had been initiated into the group. The exposé prompted an investigation by the Department of Justice. He had fled to Mexico after The Times story published the previous October. "Keith Raniere displayed a disgusting abuse of power in his efforts to denigrate and manipulate women he considered his sex slaves," FBI Assistant Director-in-Charge William Sweeney said in the press release announcing Raniere's arrest. He was charged with sex trafficking, sex trafficking conspiracy and forced labor conspiracy. Prosecutors alleged that Raniere "created a secret society of women whom he had sex with and branded with his initials, coercing them with the threat of releasing their highly personal information and taking their assets." According to a criminal complaint, prosecutors alleged that Raniere told followers that men need multiple sex partners while women need to be monogamous. The also claimed Raniere had "over 50 sex slaves," NBC News reported. March 30, 2018: "Smallville" actress Kristin Kreuk explains reports that she was part of NXIVM. Kristin Kreuk "Smallville" actress Kristin Kreuk told Elle in March 2018 that she had taken self-help classes through NXIVM, but she was never part of the DOS inner circle. "I took an Executive Success Programs/NXIVM 'Intensive,' what I understood to be a self-help/personal growth course that helped me handle my previous shyness, which is why I continued with the program," she said in a statement last year. She said she was 23 when she took courses with NXIVM, which would have been in 2006. "The accusations that I was in the 'inner circle' or recruited women as 'sex slaves' are blatantly false," she added. April 20, 2018: "Smallville" actress Allison Mack was arrested and and charged with sex trafficking and forced labor. A federal judge in Brooklyn agreed Tuesday to release Allison Mack on $5 million bond and place her under home detention in California. She'll be living with her parents. AP Photo/Frank Franklin II Mack was arrested on April 20, 2018 on charges of sex trafficking, sex trafficking conspiracy, and forced labor conspiracy. The actress was accused by two unnamed women of requiring them to engage in sexual activity with Raniere, CNN reported at the time. Prosecutors alleged that Mack received financial benefits in exchange for the women's cooperation. The women claimed they were blackmailed into performing sexual favors. INSIDER previously reported that Mack sent cryptic messages to prominent feminists on Twitter, trying to recruit women for "an organization that focuses on empowering women from the inside out." The women she reached out to include actress Emma Watson, parenting expert Stefanie Wilder-Taylor, and singer Kelly Clarkson. Mack pleaded not guilty to charges. Clare Bronfman, left, leaves federal court, Tuesday, July 24, 2018, in the Brooklyn borough of New York. Bronfman, an heiress to the Seagram's liquor fortune and three other people were arrested on Tuesday in connection with the investigation of a self-improvement organization accused of branding some of its female followers and forcing them into unwanted sex. AP Photo/Mary Altaffer NXIVM moved its operations from Albany, New York, to Brooklyn, in April 2018, the The New York Post reported. As Raniere faced criminal charges, longtime member Clare Bronfman — a multimillionaire heiress to the Seagram's liquor fortune — took control of the organization, The Post said. An insider told The Post that the organization's "crisis mode" as Raniere and Mack faced charges. May 4, 2018: Raniere pleaded not guilty and his attorney said "everything was consensual." "There are well-known groups of men who brand themselves," attorney Marc Agnifilo said. "A group of women do that and suddenly they're victims." Following his not guilty plea, Raniere was held without bail. May 30, 2018: Mack told The New York Times that she instituted the branding ritual. AP Photo/Seth Wenig Allison Mack told the New York Times Magazine that it was her idea to brand members of the alleged sex cult. She said tattoos weren't intense enough and wanted a stronger brand that would be more meaningful. "I was like: 'Y'all, a tattoo? People get drunk and tattooed on their ankle 'BFF,' or a tramp stamp,'" she told the Times. "I have two tattoos and they mean nothing." The Times said hundreds of NXIVM members were branded with a symbol that resembled a "K" and "R," which stands for Keith Raniere. According to The Times, Mack was once one of Raniere's sex slaves. When she acquired a slave of her own, the slave was branded with both the "KR" symbol as well as an "AM" symbol. June 12, 2018: NXIVM suspended all operations. The organization said in a statement on its website: It is with deep sadness that we inform you we are suspending all NXIVM/ESP enrollment, curriculum and events until further notice. We will be in touch with more information for anyone currently enrolled in upcoming events/programs. While we are disappointed by the interruption of our operations, we believe it is warranted by the extraordinary circumstances facing the company at this time. We continue to believe in the value and importance of our work and look forward to resuming our efforts when these allegations are resolved. July 24, 2018: Four more people, including heiress Clare Bronfman were arrested and charged with racketeering and conspiracy for their roles in NXIVM. Court papers say a trust largely funded by Seagram's liquor fortune heiress Bronfman is bankrolling the defense for her co defendants in a sex trafficking case. AP Photo/Seth Wenig Federal authorities arrested Clare Bronfman, Nancy Salzman, Lauren Salzman, and Kathy Russell on charges of racketeering conspiracy for their alleged involvement in NXIVM. Prosecutors alleged that all four women recruited and groomed women into being sexual partners for Raniere. The women are accused of using "harassment, coercion and abusive litigation to intimidate and attack perceived enemies and critics," according to the indictment, published by The Daily Beast. The indictment accused the women of a number of crimes, including identity theft, harboring of aliens for financial gain, extortion, forced labor, sex trafficking, money laundering, wire fraud and obstruction of justice. It described Bronfman as "a member of the Enterprise and a high-ranking member of Nxivm" who served on the organization's board from 2009 to 2018. AP Photo/Mark Lennihan During court hearing on March 27, Bronfman fainted in court after a discussion about whether she was being represented by lawyer Michael Avenatti. According to The New York Post, Judge Nicholas Garaufis had asked Donna Newman, one of Bronfman's lawyers: "Did she retain Mr. Avenatti to represent her in this case, yes or no?" The question came days after Avenatti was charged with trying to extort more than $20 million from Nike. Newman requested a sidebar discussion with the judge, and on Bronfman's way back to her seat after the conversation, she fell forward and fainted. Paramedics were called, but Bronfman was not taken to a hospital for treatment. April 2, 2019: Lauren Salzman pleaded guilty, admitting she enslaved a woman for just over two years. Lauren Salzman, a co defendant in the sex trafficking and racketeering Nxivm cult, departs the Brooklyn Federal Courthouse, following a hearing in New York. REUTERS/Brendan McDermid Lauren Salzman — the daughter of NXIVM co-founder Nancy Salzman — became the second defendant to plead guilty on April 2. The 42-year-old pleaded guilty to racketeering and racketeering conspiracy and admitted in court to keeping a personal slave locked in her home for two years, according to the New York Post. "I knowingly and intentionally harbored Jane Doe 4, a woman whose identity is known to me, in a room in the home in the Northern District of New York," Salzman said in court, according to The Post. She also admitted to being a member of NXIVM's inner circle, DOS. April 8, 2019: Mack reverses her not guilty plea and pleads guilty to one count of racketeering conspiracy and one count of racketeering. Actress Allison Mack leaves Brooklyn federal court Monday, April 8, 2019, in New York. Mack pleaded guilty to racketeering charges on Monday in a case involving a cult like group based in upstate New York. AP Photo/Mark Lennihan Mack reversed her plea on April 8, nearly a year after she pleaded not guilty charges including sex trafficking, identity fraud, and money laundering for her role in NXIVM's alleged sex ring. Mack entered a plea agreement on racketeering charges, according to the Associated Press. Prosecutors alleged that Mack helped procure women for a cult-like group within NXIVM that recruited sex slaves for its leader in upstate New York. "I know I can and will be a better person," Mack said at her hearing on Monday. She is scheduled to be sentenced on September 11.

my biggest fear for sonic 4 now that amy is confirmed for the movie is the writers are gonna make her the "mom friend" or make her entire character "girlboss". people say that her entire character shouldn't revolve around sonic and that's true (never mind that the only point that WAS true was maybe early archie sonic), but stripping her of ALL her character just to make her a girlboss isn't good writing either. i know all the characters had their personalities changed to an extent for the movies and i don't mind if they make some changes to amy's character (or heck, even give her some backstory. PLEASE i want her origins) but i really hope she isn't completely unrecognizable. please just write her as three dimensional like the male characters. better yet, get evan stanley on the writing team, out of all the current writers she gets amy the best.

Opinion: How could Sonamy progress in IDW?
Tumblr media
[note: the original article was written in Spanish by @latin-dr-robotnik]
Today we’re going to discuss a recurring topic on my blog, with a more complete perspective.
Today’s article was inspired by an ask I got a few days ago about my possible perspective on the future of IDW Sonamy. I thought it would be interesting to revisit and expand this topic, because it’s still something of great interest for thousands of fans all around the world, and because SEGA has recently adopted a very peculiar position on the couple and their dynamic. As I detailed on my article SEGA and its most recent Sonamy side – more canon than ever, the dynamic has been going through a shift that can be distinguished into two main parts: 1) the commercial potential of Sonamy as a merchandising and marketing icon; 2) the stability of the interactions in the comics, in the short monthly stories on Sonic Channel, and so on.
That being said, there’s no need to mention that we’re going to focus entirely and nothing more than on this ship. I usually suggest other articles for those who prefer to read on other subjects, but today I will recommend our Discord server [translator’s note: the server is mainly Spanish-speaking], where discussions about ships are limited on their own canal that is separated from other themes: general discussions, music, fangames and mods, fanfics, fanart and even gaming in general. As you know, if you want to bring something else to our community, or just avoid talking about Sonamy, you’re more than welcome to join. Now, back on track.
Tumblr media
What’s going on with Sonamy in IDW?
To recap what’s happened in these last months: Sonic and his friends finally got through the nightmare that was the Metal Virus, he and Amy hugged a few times, and since very recently they’ve been involved in a short arc about Chao races in Twinkle Park Zone, with a sinister background. In these last months after the eradication of the virus, there have been much closer and warmer interactions between our two hedgehogs, and I suspect that part of this is what inspired that question in the first place: what’s going on?
As I commented in the article where I proposed that Sonamy is “more canon than ever” (I know that it’s an exaggeration, that was the point), SEGA is treading carefully and the main canon seems to be willing to negotiate a more open representation of the relationship between the two in their different continuities, from best friends to something more. What I did not expect to happen was reading an answer from Evan Stanley (artist and writer that replaces Ian Flynn) about their dynamic, summing it up with “they like each other”.
The redrawing of Sonic’s expression when Amy hugs him in a recent drawing of hers made people wonder if this was yet another example of SEGA’s “censoring” (comparison below), to which Evan answered that it was modified to keep Sonic in character: he’s a guy that does not show much emotional vulnerability or too many negative emotions, and this is why sometimes the artists have to adjust WIPs to keep in line with this official point of view. Evan assured that this is not any kind of confirmation that Sonic does not like Amy, and doubles down by highlighting that in the official material, in the wikis and on Sonic Channel they show that, and I quote: “They like each other, but Sonic just isn’t the kind of guy who is going to make goo-goo eyes at Amy or perform grand acts of romance. If you wanna see that, that’s what fan works are for.”
And Evan’s words are a great way to sum up what’s going on with IDW Sonic right now. When it comes to interactions, they’re working with two characters who deep down “like each other”, but both show it in their own way. Amy is much more proactive when it comes to express her feelings, while Sonic only sometimes shows a glimpse of his feelings, with a smile or a small gesture. But at the end of the day they’re still friends and, depending on the situation, the comic can focus more or less on these details.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Comparison between the first sketch showed by Evan and the final product. The modification of the expression was minimal: Sonic’s slight blush was changed into a smile, maybe being a little overwhelmed by the gesture of affection.
The “progression” of the dynamic in the future
A good part of the answer to this question is based on my idea that right now, when it comes to Sonamy, we reached some kind of comfortable plateau. What am I referring to? To the fact that there have been a lot of varied interactions in these last 3 years of the comic, and they’re everything I could have asked for and then some. When we talk about Sonamy in canon, as Evan said, we don’t tend to hope for great romantic gestures from Sonic, we barely even ask for a look that hints that they understand each other beyond what it seems at first glance, so the fact that the IDW continuity is betting so much on this ship is basically a dream come true. For this reason, I don’t think things will change much in the future.
If I have to make a prediction on Sonamy’s future in IDW, I believe that there are still a lot of possibilities that our known writers (and maybe new writers!) could explore more, to see what makes this dynamic work so well. Actually, about 10 years ago, Ian Flynn wrote that if they could take advantage of the abilities and similarities between the two characters as adventurous spirits and with a strong moral sense, they would be “like poetry in motion”. This largely happens in IDW Sonic if you look carefully, but there are always new stories to tell and opportunities for them to work together and explore a bit more their strong bond, stronger than other friendships that they share. When the next major arc comes (which seems to be getting closer), they could explore aspects of their dynamic that are slightly more experimental, like being separated for extended periods of time and under dangerous situations… as long as they don’t turn it into a painful experience like the Metal Virus arc.
Tumblr media
What Ian Flynn wrote about Sonamy, what works and what doesn’t. This was written in 2011, when Archie Sonic was still the major comic continuity, and when, according to Ian, Sonic was still “tied” to Sally Acord, leaving little room to the writers’ opinions.
The reality is that I see a stable future for the dynamic in the IDW universe. Sonamy is not fit for a lot of drama (fights, breaking up, etc.) without feeling forced or completely out of place, and only fanfics and fanart could be capable of capitalizing on this kind of content. On the other hand, for reasons I detailed in past articles, SEGA would not dare to alter the established order of the dynamic, let alone new that they managed to recover and maintain control over the ways Sonamy is being portrayed everywhere. SEGA won’t pull a Dragon Prince, which ended up confirming the main ship and then they made them go through a crisis and break up in a heartwrenching way in the graphic novel that acts as a bridge between season 3 and 4.
Tumblr media
In short
The future of IDW Sonamy is looking bright and stable. I don’t think there will be serious changes to what we’re experiencing right now, and this is why both Evan Stanley and Ian Flynn agree that the dynamic is practically in the perfect place, keeping in line to how SEGA wants them to be represented together. This means we won’t see more affectionate gestures than what we’re seeing now (I doubt we’ll ever see again Sonic offering Amy a rose like in Sonic X), but it also means that we have now a solid basis for our expectations. In the now old IDW Sonic #2, Sonic and Amy had the chance of seriously talking a bit about what they thought of each other, with Sonic being determined to keep living life his own way (although he wouldn’t mind Amy to accompany him… or even suggesting himself that she could come), and Amy being determined to respect his way of life, because that’s what she loves about him, and she doesn’t want him to change. Since then, all we have seen and we’ll keep seeing in the comic is a consequence of this key moment; the two philosophies that they have and they share, in a constant back-and-forth with some tense moments and some cute moments.
An interesting detail that wasn’t included in the ask and that makes me think is the possibility that all of this will feature in the games as well. This is a completely different matter for another day, but I like to think that there is the possibility that we’ll see SEGA being more interested in inserting more Sonamy in the games, even if in an indirect way like in Sonic Unleashed and its emotional support, especially if the rumors that we’re about to get a soft-reboot are true. Romance is not something Sonic games are famous for doing well… at all, but that doesn’t mean it would be a bad idea to add a little sprinkle of IDW Sonamy in the mix.
And finally, I think I’ve talked enough about this topic, As you know, we’re waiting for some news, and I hope we’ll see each other again here or on our Discord. We’ll see if on this 25th something interesting happens. In any case, see you next time!
