Socks' Ultimate Phantoms list, part two
PART ONE
Phantoms, continued:
David Thaxton - Had this moment in Final Lair where it looked like he’d had a heart attack, and then Christine put her hands over his on his heart and just—🥺 David Arnsperger - Had a wild self-caress right before MOTN where he rocked backward. That's it, that's all I remember. John Cudia - I remember actively not liking his Phantom the first time I saw him, but I changed my mind at his Final Lair because it was so good. Jonathan Roxmouth - Has a slightly nasally tone and a slightly deeper voice than a lot of Phantoms. He did not have good pants. Actually the worst pants I’ve ever seen. Looks like a cinnamon roll, is not afraid to burn you if you’ve wronged him. I also don’t like how his wig looks like thinning hair at the very front. Tim Martin Gleason - Don't ask me why, I just like him okay. James Romick - Really like his voice. Does an excellent sad. Derrick Davis - Fantastic voice. Brought a touch of humanity to that awful restaged show and made it worth watching. Wish we could have seen him in Real POTO. Great ass. Brent Barrett - I remember liking him. Thomas James O’Leary - Good acting, good voice. Jon Robyns - Makes excellent noises during the Final Lair. Good voice. James Gant - Works best with Eva Shanu-Wilson. Okay acting, but nothing else really going on. Occasional good moments. Thomas Borchert - Unfairly pretty, beautiful voice, excellent choices during Final Lair, MOTN was mesmerizing. Bit of a slut. Top ten for sure.
Christines: Lisa Vroman - An "older" Christine. Great chemistry with Franc D'Ambrosio. Initiated a gentle hand-holding during the ring return with him which was an excellent choice that I don’t often see. Made some other excellent choices throughout the show in reacting to what was happening around her. Looks like she could kill you, is a cinnamon roll except when she’s going to kill you. Elizabeth Southard - Another "older" Christine. Love her. The best chemistry with Gary Mauer, her irl husband. Also had great chemistry with Jim Weitzer, who was her Raoul. Very, very good actor. Looks like a cinnamon roll, is a cinnamon roll but only for her husband, otherwise she can and will kill. Luzia Nistler - Love her voice. Austrian. (Like German, but elegant.) Emilie Kouatchou - I wanted to like her. But she has a ton of vibrato and she sounds like a child. I also don't care for her acting. She looked like she was only doing what she was told, rather than reacting to things happening around her. Meghan Picerno - I don't remember anything about her. I saw her live right after the reopening. Celinde Schoenmaker - I've only heard audio of her but I remember liking her. Kanisha Feliciano - Good Wishing. Looks fabulous in the blue dress. I love her wigs more than any other Christine. Hers doesn’t look like a frizzy mess. Lucy St Louis - She played a very sympathetic Christine, and has such a beautiful voice. Lily Kerhoas - fierce. Loved the anger she had in Final Lair. Holly Anne-Hull - too much vibrato Paige Blankson - too much vibrato Kelly Mathieson - She's fierce. Physically jumps in front of the Phantom and throws him off. Excellent voice. 100/10 no notes.
Raouls: Christopher Carl - Didn't get to see much of him owing to the fact that the boots he's in are Phantom-centered highlights. The little I have seen of him has been excellent though. I've heard an audio boot of him as the Phantom and it was excellent. Has a more "American" pronunciation than most Phantoms. ("ay" vs "ah") Ciaran Sheehan - I like him better as Raoul than as the Phantom. He was ready to throw hands. Has a very stilted way of singing that reminds me of the few clips of Colm Wilkinson, but sounds better than Colm. Willing to troll his associates irl. Bronson Norris Murphy - A. Dorable. The best. Looks like a cinnamon roll, is a cinnamon roll. Could probably do a murder if pushed far enough. Have heard audio and now seen a boot and he’s a protective Raoul. Hands down my favourite Raoul. John Riddle - Saw him live right after the reopening. I don't remember anything specific about him. Paul Schaefer - Nice chest. Matt Blaker - meh

Happy valley
“The picture becomes some sort of answer for me, making something invisible visible.”
Much of O’Leary's work questions what is deemed acceptable or natural within a particular community, and how these agreed upon norms often function as a method of social control.
Eva O’Leary (IE, 1989) received a BFA from the California College of the Arts in 2012, and a MFA from Yale in 2016. She was the recipient of the Hyères Festival Photographie Grand Prix in 2018, the Vontobel Contemporary Photography Prize in 2017, and was named a Foam Talent in 2014.

International Women’s Day Recs
For International Women’s Day, I wanted to put together a post celebrating books/series by some of my favorite female authors! I’m giving just the briefest of descriptions because otherwise this post would be massive, but if you’re curious I’d love to talk with you more! These recommendations are going to span several genres, but primarily fall under science fiction, fantasy, and romance, and I tried to get a good mix of backlist titles in addition to more recent ones.
Fantasy:
Howl’s Moving Castle, Diana Wynne Jones: meta conversations about fantasy + extremely dramatic wizard/angry shouty witch dynamic
The Vorkosigan Saga, Lois McMaster Bujold: complicated female characters + disabled genius main character who makes so many bad decisions but always talks/thinks his way out of them
Tooth and Claw, Jo Walton: Pride & Prejudice but with dragons
Sunshine, Robin McKinley: slow and atmospheric take on vampires
Kindred, Octavia Butler: extremely profound and powerful time travel slavery examination
The Fifth Season, N.K. Jemisin: amazing world-building of a world that constantly goes through apocalypses + powerful character arcs
In Other Lands, Sarah Rees Brennan: hilarious take on portal fantasies
Trail of Lightning, Rebecca Roanhorse: post-apocalypse Navajo setting +  monster hunter woman with a lot of baggage
Science Fiction:
Ancillary Justice, Ann Leckie: gender examination + AI ships + space empire
To Be Taught, If Fortunate, Becky Chambers: novella about the future of space exploration, quiet and profound
Gideon the Ninth, Tamsyn Muir: snarky lesbian necromancers solve a locked house murder mystery
The Wanderers, Meg Howrey: character study about astronauts and the people they leave behind
The Murderbot Diaries, Martha Wells: Murderbot just wants to be left alone to watch their soap operas and anime but has to rescue their dumb humans
The Calculating Stars, Mary Robinette Kowal: alternate history where an asteroid hits Earth and we need to leave for the stars, anxious Jewish protagonist who is extremely relatable
Romance:
The Rogue Not Taken, Sarah MacLean: Regency road trip, extremely sexy
The Kiss Quotient, Helen Hoang: main female lead has autism and hires a sex worker to help her practice sex
The Flatshare, Beth O’Leary: two people agree to share an apartment by never occupying it at the same time and fall in love
The Lady’s Guide to Celestial Mechanics, Olivia Waite: f/f historical romance with so much detail about the period
Get a Life, Chloe Brown, Talia Hibbert: contemporary, main female lead has a near-death experience and decides to grab life with both hands by hanging out with hunky male lead
Soulless, Gail Carriger: steampunk romance, woman who turns supernatural creatures human again with skin-to-skin contact gets embroiled in a mystery and falls in love with a werewolf
Misc:
Anne of Green Gables, L.M. Montgomery: classic female friendship tale with an emphasis on the importance of imagination (books 2 & 3 are my favorites though)
The Dublin Murder Squad, Tana French: murder mystery novels set in Dublin, very character-focused
New Worlds: Year One, Marie Brennan: nonfiction worldbuilding help, discussing all sorts of aspects of societies and worlds
Honorable Mentions:
The previous lists in no way represent all of the amazing female authors out there, so I just wanted to shout out a few more authors who have written books I’ve loved that didn’t quite make it onto these lists:
Courtney Milan, Tamora Pierce, Charlie Jane Anders, Kameron Hurley, Megan Whalen Turner, Mary Roach, Susanna Clarke, Gretchen McCulloch, C.L. Polk, Alyssa Cole, Eva Ibbotson, Alison Croggon, S.A. Chakraborty, Kat Howard, Katherine Addison, and Ursula K. LeGuin

WELCOME TO DAY ONE OF THE 2041 SHOW CHOIR MIDWEST REGIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS!
today’s program includes:
THE NEW DIRECTIONS
Your Song, Moulin Rogue ( Featured: Julien Schuester, Molly Pearce.) Heaven is a Place on Earth, Belinda Carlisle ( Featured: Candy Motta. ) Closing Time, Semisonic ( Featured: Miles Pearce, Jaz Evans. )
THE CRAWFORD CANARIES
Here You Come Again, Dolly Parton, DJ Ricky Luna ( Featured: Gianna Stone. ) Girl in the Movies, Dolly Parton ( Featured: Margot Stanley. ) 9 to 5, Dolly Parton ( Featured: Aubrey O’Leary. )
AND THE HOOSIERDADDIES!
LET’S SEE WHAT THE JUDGES HAVE TO SAY. . .
[ Post Regionals Day 1, Sue, Wendy, and David S. Pumpkins are sat around a conference table. Time to get down to business! ]
SUE: [arms crossed, against a wall] That was the most horrendous performance I have ever witnessed in my 35 years of living, and that's coming from someone who was one of the original members of Milli Vanilli.
DAVID: I'm David Pumpkins!
WENDY: I for one loved those bird girls. Clap if you think the cardinals should win!
DAVID: I'm David Pumpkins, man!
WENDY: no? nobody? alright well, i'm just saying what everyone is thinking...how about those new directions? they were fun! wholesome! real star quality!
SUE: Wendy Williams, it is a disgrace you are touching Ohio soil at this very moment. I think we all know who needs to win and it's not the private school lesbians or the public school cesspool of cretins that so happen to refer to themselves as New Directions.
WENDY: What was the other team? I don't even remember! [laughing at herself, she snorts]  Between the girls and the New Directions, I think I liked the New Directions more. The Chickadees were cute, they were real cute, but the New Directions were fun! I wanted to get out and join that flash mob, but I don't think anyone would have wanted to see that...Just like nobody wants to see you in that track suit, Sue.
SUE: These track suits have been in my family since we were on the Cherokee reservations in 1881, Wendy Williams. I know you know absolutely nothing about music because your brittle bones wouldn't allow you to hold a microphone, but I once performed with Oliva Newton-John and I think we can all recognize that you and Pappy Van Winkle over here are the saddest and laziest excuses of a celebrity judge.  So that makes me the perfect person to choose today's winner, which should be the Hoosierdaddies. A terrible play on words, but at least they have a smidgen of talent.
WENDY: I'll have you know, Sue Sylvester, I was on the masked singer as the lips and I did NUMBERS on tiktok. okay? alright? yeah, that's what i thought. I say we just go ahead and vote and let the ballots do the talking...
SUE: I couldn't have said it better, Wendy Williams. [she sits down and writes on her ballot. New Directions, first. You win this time William Schuester and Wendy Williams, no relation involved. The Hoosierdaddies, second. The Canaries, third.]
WENDY: Mhm. [She fills out her ballot, New Directions first, Canaries Second, Hoosierwhatsits Third.]
DAVID: [Freezes in his seat with finger guns pointed at Wendy and Sue while his back-up skeleton dancers fill out his ballot for him. New Directions, first. Canaries, second. The Hoozierdaddies, third.] Any questions?!
WENDY: Where did they come from? Oh, they're cute! But no, no questions.
[About an hour later, Sue walks onto stage, the other two celebrity hooligans behind her]
SUE: Thank you all for coming. I know all of you are here because your kid is on stage because I can not imagine anyone wanting to be here willingly except for [she points to a decrepit Will and Emma Schuester], Justin Timberfake and Eva over there and I'm sure you all want to get out of here to take the good ole winners to the Olive Garden in Westerville so let's get this started. Second runner up, [she rolls her eyes at her favorite team losing], the Hoosierdaddies! And for first runner up, the Canaries from Crawford Country Day! [she hands their captain, some blonde girl who looks like she's pushing thirty the trophy, and just as Aubrey tries to talk to her, Sue pushes her face away], back over that way Pitch Perfect. [in a monotone voice] And that leaves the New Directions with first place. Congrats.
