â a/n:Â I tried to make this as vague as possible but obviously coming from a country and a family that celebrate Christmas, I was a little bit biased, either way however you celebrate this time or if you're just chilling, I hope you can enjoy this little reaction regardless. Also, there might be a little continuity from previous reactions for some boys

NAMJOON: âMonie! Come here, boy! Monie!âÂ
Seeing only the rushing colours of the uncaring crowd, you waddled to the side and began to weep uncontrollably. Monie will get lost and die, and Namjoon will hate you forever. This was your first holiday together and you couldnât even do this one simple thing.
And perhaps, yes, it was the three cups of Svarak talking which youâd drunk while wandering the Christmas market in Prague and perhaps yes, it was the horrid jetlag clouding your emotional state to the point where light inebriation was the least of your worries. Oh, why did you pressure Namjoon into bringing Monie abroad? Who brings a dog to a romantic getaway abroad anyway?
âHeâll get lonely,â you whined, placing your palms against Namjoonâs chest as you adjusted yourself in his lap.Â
âHe doesnât understand that emotion,â Namjoon had snided, hands reaching up to grab your hips. âOr any emotion for that matter.â
âDogs can feel emotions!â you pouted in the poor thingâs defence whilst Namjoon brushed his thumb over your lower lip.Â
âI know, baby,â he affirmed. âIâm just saying he specifically doesnât have them.â
âYouâre so mean.â
Well, this idiot of course. Maybe you should have been meaner too, maybe then Monie wouldnât think it as funny to rip away from his leash and go running off in between vendors selling gingerbread cookies and hot wine. And now be lost forever.Â
âBaby?âÂ
Seeing Namjoon, trying to hold onto the thousands of gift bags to send home, running towards you, only made you weep all the harder, snot falling onto your jacket.Â
Tossing the paper bag into the slushed snow, Namjoon took a hold of your face and fretted, like he always did, a million miles per second.Â
âAre you hurt? Are you in pain? Did someone hurt you? Are your bones broken?!â
âYouâre going to hate me!â you cried, earning nothing but a confused frown and prolonged worrying.Â
âWhy would I hate my baby?â he cooed but you fervently shook your head, evading his kiss.Â
âI lost Monie! I-I lost him and theyâre gonna sell him, Namjoon! Oh god, theyâre gonna sell him to some mean kids as a holiday present who are going to pull on his tail and ears! Oh, God, what have I d-done?!â
âYou mean this Monie?â Namjoon asked with a smile as he stepped aside and lo' and behold without the slightest hint of shame in the eye stood a white dog, his leash stretching to tie around Namjoonâs wrist.Â
âOh my God, you bastard!â
The little dog was rather displeased by the callous and unrefined way of your hugging but you paid it no attention.Â
âI found him some five minutes ago,â Namjoon explained, more than a little bewildered at your outburst. âTrying to steal some poor guyâs chicken kebab.â
âAnd all the trip you fondled him more than me. I was but a decoration.â
âOkay, I get it.
âI mean, I bring my wonderful partner halfway across the world to the top 1 spot to celebrate winter holidays in Europe and what do I get? Nothing. They spend the entire time not admiring the splendour of a city with more than a thousand years under the belt, no, they spend that time buying dog treats.â
âWould you shut up?â you pressed a palm against Namjoonâs mouth, feeling the vibrations of his laughter against your skin. âIt was our first holiday together, sorry for being emotional about failing you.â
âYou could never fail me baby,â he muttered softly, taking your hand away. âHappy holidays. May we spent fifty more together.â
With a kiss against your temples, Namjoon tucked your legs closer into his lap. His apartment might not be a city with a thousand years under its belt and perhaps it did not smell of hot wine, but it was warm and comfortable, standing strong against the harsh weather of this year's winter and you were perfectly content on spending the holidays quietly in your lonesome. Either way just like he did in Prague, Monie slept the night away, only waking when needing to beg for some food.
YOONGI: âSo which one is yours?â
And because it made sense, your mother removed her glasses, squinting at the TV.Â
âThe second one on the left.â
âWhat, broad shoulders with a nice smile?â
âNo, mom, thatâs Jin! Iâm with Yoongi.â
âIs it the little one?â
After a partially amused albeit exhausted sigh, you affirmed.Â
âYes, itâs the little one.â
âHe looksâŠnice.â
âHe is nice,â you smiled softly to yourself. The broadcast ended and Yoongiâs face was replaced by a soft strumming of generic winter music. Looking out the window with a tangerine twirling between your fingers, you hoped he was at least warm somewhere in Seoul, warm and resting. As it was yesterday and as it will be tomorrow, there was a sunken pang that came when thinking of Yoongi. In times like these you wished nothing more for him to be normal, or at least a little less remarkable, for it to be ordinary enough to sit here with you, awkwardly nodding to whatever your mother said, holding your hand in his and gorging on these tangerines that you subconsciously bought for him.Â
But wellâŠlife was what it was and you had to accept him. All of him.Â
A ring at the door.Â
âOh!â your mother jumped, startled by the jarring sound perturbing the otherwise mellow evening. âItâs probably those damn singers!â she cursed, rolling up the newspaper as if a bunch of mitten-cladded carolers could be thwacked on the nose like a misbehaving dog.Â
âIâll get it,â you sprang to your feet, rushing to the door. âHey, listen,â you yelled at the ringing stranger, battling with the rusty lock. âThis is not a festive house so donât expect any - oh.â
âOh,â Yoongi echoed softly. His might be freezing red, along with his nose and his hat was perhaps so big it seemed to envelop his head as a whole, and he just might be covered in snow from head to toe as though heâd tripped and dove face down into a big pile, but to you, he was nothing but a vision.Â
âHappy holidays,â he whispered and stretched out a small parcel towards you which you clutched, head pounding away thoroughly dazed.Â
âYou donât even celebrate,â you muttered but Yoongi only shrugged.Â
âIâm here to celebrate you, nothing mo - wow!â
Wrapping your arms tightly around his neck you began to truly ponder if wishes could indeed come true in this harsh and unfair world as someone liked to say.Â
âYouâre choking me here, lilâ heater,â Yoongi gasped for air but you didnât listen, smelling in his faint cologne and breathing a heavy exhale of relief.Â
âDeal with it.â
He hummed lowly, with one palm reaching to pat your back. It might have been freezing but you didnât even notice. Unbeknownst to you neither did he.Â
JIN: âItâs fine, Jin.â
Nervously, he exhaled, still twiddling with the reindeer print of his singing tie in the front seat of the car.
âI need to be perfect,â he muttered, peering through the dark at your childhood home standing in the distance like a menacing shadow of an oppressive rock face. One he had chosen to smash his head against this night.Â
âYou donât need to be,â softly, you denied, kissing his cheek. Even with the ring on both of your fingers, he blushed. âBut you still are. Donât worry. As heinous as you are, you're an angel compared to my relatives.â
Because of the panic-filled tremor running up his spine it took a whole two minutes for Jin to truly register your words, during which youâd already climbed out the car, taken the largest bulk of presents in your arm and knocked on the door, fully awaiting to be greeted warmly back home for the holidays.Â
âHeinous?â Jin muttered absent-mindedly before shaking himself out whatever terrible spell besieged him. It wasnât your mother he was so afraid of -Â
âOh, Seokjinnie! Howâs my favourite son-in-law doing?!â
No, it definitely wasnât your mother, though he would appreciate sheâd pinch his cheeks just a tad less.Â
âSo, youâre the fiance that they divorced once already.â
It was your judgmental aunts that had him sweating in consecutive nightmares for many months now.Â
âAuntie A, please, letâs be civil,â you pushed yourself in front of the slowly brewing conflict. âNot on the holidays.â
âSo, Seokjin, we wanted for you to be more included so weâŠtried to make some of your home foods.â
Jin didnât know much of this nice woman who spoke kindly to him. She might be your second cousin twice removed on your fatherâs side, or your aunt thrice removed on your motherâs side⊠Either way, the spread on the table indeed looked far more eccentric than he was used to. And ever since youâd entered his life, it had been nothing but eccentric.
With bated breaths, the nice lady and your mom waited for his approval and cringing inside, he gave a hollow, polite smile.Â
âI like it,â he vomited a bit in his mouth.Â
As soft music travelled from downstairs, muffled multicolour of lights glimmered from the small window of your bedroom behind which stretched vast slopes of snow covered by dark.Â
âWhat are they talking about?â Jin whispered, stroking your hair as you laid on top of him. Usually, heâd never liked it but youâd been more of his firsts than heâd ever thought. He could hear just the end of the conversation but the drunken drawl made the words nearly incoherent.Â
âAbout how much they love you,â you muttered in reply, tracing absent-minded patterns on his chest.Â
âLiar, liar, ugly pants on fire.â
âHey, these pants are not ugly,â you whined and Jin hummed. âAnd I wouldnât lie. Not on this season of goodwill.â
âGood will, my ass, are you not grinding against my crotch?â
HOSEOK: âWould you sit still?âÂ
âSorry, my nose was just itching.â
âWell, do you want it green?âÂ
âNo, maâam.â
You smirked slightly before focusing back on the work at hand. Or should you say on the hand.Â
Hoseok really shouldnât be looking this good in nail polish. Especially how immediately much you wanted these fingers up in yourâŠWell, either way the polish would be destroyed then.Â
With the lights twinkling in the background and the fireplace burning, the night was swimming away into the late night with gracious, almost lulling ease. And while you drew the golden stars one by one, there might still be that treacherous minuscule pang of discontent in the lower pits of your heart, but you pushed it away. Ironically, the first night you painted matching nails it was a time much like this - winter holidays, here in snow-dusted Seoul.Â
âJust say youâre disappointed,â he had sighed.Â
âAnd what would that change?â you mumbled grimly, focusing on dragging the brush with near perfection, coating the nail slowly in all black.Â
Hoseok didnât say anything, only drew yet another heavy sigh, before laying his head in your lap.Â
âIâm sorry,â he murmured. You knew this would happen - no couple shirts, no photos, nothing shared in public, nothing to ever prove that this, whatever that even entailed, was real. You knew all that but if only knowing would hurt the hollow ache taking root. You felt the weight of his stare but rather than confronting it you decided to be a coward and focus solely on painting your nails. Because thatâs what mattered when the love of your life had to tuck you away in his home like a dirty sock otherwise youâll be harassed until mental breakdown. You knew he carried that ceaseless guilt all around, so much so, that even his ever-present smile was cracking at the seams like vinyl in a cold room.Â
âMaybe you can paint my nails?â
That at last had you glancing sparsely towards his side.
âYou meanâŠlike matching designs?â
âYeah,â he shrugged, the tone sounding completely casual. Almost too casual. âI donât mind painting my nails andâŠ
âAnd Iâve never stopped wanting to have a little bit of you with me everywhere.â
âAs cute as it is, I think Baloo just farted.â
Hoseok threw a heavy glare towards your old, over-fattened Grinch of a Birman only to have it returned back tenfold.Â
âHe hates me.â
âJust a bit. All done.â
Blowing on his nails, Hoseok glimpsed outside and you watched as his stare turned wistful, seeing the many rows of families, friends and couples all enjoying outside, trading easy laughter and intoxicated cheer.Â
âYou donât regret it, do you?â he muttered, almost incoherently. âBeing with me?â
You brushed a hand over his knuckles with a sad smile.Â
âOur family might be small and our home might be a little quiet but itâs a good one. I donât need anything else.â
For a second, Hoseok almost appeared stunned before his eyes softened in the glimmering lights and he brushed his forehead against yours.Â
âHappy holidays, baby.â
JIMIN: As the years began to pile up, more and more you began to understand the unceasing back pain all adults seemed to complain about and even more so the sentiment behind Grinch standing on a hilltop and yelling down upon the entire city âI HATE YOU!â The hatred for you came shockingly easy, hey, maybe you were just a bad person but what was not easy was to remember that youâd lost your best friend and the man of your dreams all in one well-coordinated swoop.
Forever didnât seem so stable when it could be killed by a few petty, anger-driven words. The only forever would be the ceaseless taunting.
If only you would have spoken more; if only he would have listened more. If only you had been brave enough to finally tell your best friend you loved him. If only you were just bold enough to believe that his jealousy was out of fear and not some chauvinistic sign of unspoken ownership. If only youâd have the guts to crawl back and apologise. If onlyâŠ
If only youâd crashed into him harder and cracked your own skull in the process. Then you wouldnât have to be standing here, in the middle of a snowing open-air ice rink, with children skating amok, evading the pleads of their exhausted parents; you wouldnât have to be standing here looking at the stupid face of stupidly endearing Park Jimin, of his stupid red eyes that hinted at not so long before finished crying session, of his stupid mismatched hair, growing dark in the roots and still blond at the tips and most of all you wouldnât have to be feeling the unmistakable sensation of sheer joy as you were faced with someone whom in anger you swore to hate forever.Â
Guess that forever didnât last either.Â
His hands, red and roughened from the cold, shuttered to a halt, previously occupied with dusting off your coat as heâd bumped into you on the ice, hurtling you painfully through the air.
He wet his dry lips and gently ghosted those dry-ass hands of his over your elbows, wanting to trap you? Hug you?
Either way, you were pissed and the crowd as it turned could be extremely lonely. Snowflakes fell in large clumps from the blackened sky, behind which sprawled the infinite Cosmos. Infinite Cosmos! With planets and galaxies and universes beyond your comprehension so why? Why, oh why, did this man hold so much power over you?!Â
âDonât come near me,â you growled. âI donât want to forgive you!â
Jimin being an obnoxious, catty bastard of an angel leaned into your face, so close you could feel the warmth of his breath on your nose, his own expression marred with sheer spite.Â
âSo Iâm forgiven now?â
There were many things to hate about Jimin. How he made your heart quicken and how well he was aware of that fact. The cocky smile he wore as your face hued in unflattering shades of red. You hated how sad he looked when he was down and how it made you want to ruin the entire world for ever daring to upset him. You were supposed to be unflappable, unapproachable and yet slyly like a creeping cat he had pushed past all those finely built walls to make a home in your heart.Â
âIâm angry at you!â you curled up your fists only to receive a harsh scowl in return.Â
âIâm angry at you as well!â Then he smirked because, despite all your talk when his arm wrapped around your waist, you made no effort to remove it.Â
âStop doing that!â
âOh, Iâm sorry that my face makes expressions,â he rolled his eyes, pushing you closer.
Ask anyone and theyâll tell you that winter lights were pretty but they were cold, much like the sun at certain longitudes of the Earth, but currently, you couldnât possibly get any warmer. Your back was positively sweltering acutely aware of his stable touch and the fine line you so inappropriately were skating on. Friends. Not lovers. Friends. Just friends. Not even friends now, ex-friends! Strangers! But the way he was holding you was of no strangers. Of no friends.Â
Standing here in this stupid, overpriced ice rink with its stupid golden lights, you felt yourself falter, succumbing to weakness. It was all his fault! So why could you not stop the smile blossoming upon your lips?!
âPark Jimin,â you shoved an accusing finger into his chest that definitely hadnât been getting more toned as of late. âWill you hold yourself responsible when I experience emotional malfunction?â
âDo you mean feelings?â he clarified, eyebrows wrinkling in confusion. âBecause if you do, I've been experiencing emotional malfunction for a long time already. Iâm the victim here!â
âAnd what do you want me to do about it?âÂ
âI donât know,â he shrugged, but you knew that glint in the eye that had nothing to do with the glimmer of the decorations. âKiss it better why donât you.âTis the season of kisses.â
âItâs not.â
âIt is now,â he growled and pushed his lips upon yours.
TAEHYUNG: Honestly, of all the crazy moments within the last year, it was this one that made you fully grasp just how wild oneâs life could get. Here you were on this shaking metal box, after much snivelling and snarling to get a little piece of paper, cramped in between two sweaty dudes and travelling hundreds of miles per hour just to see someoneâs son. Embarrassing. And yet you were trembling inside.
Catching a taxi, you tried not to get overwhelmed by the bustling of this foreign city and instead focused on perfecting the tied ribbon, praising the heavens that it didnât get too smushed in your carry-on luggage. Your family were more than a little concerned and more than greatly disheartened by you skipping away across the world on winter holidays of all time but anyone with eyes could see - your heart was already long gone to that stranger in your phone.
Naturally, you didnât enjoy seeing Taehyung so glum but the miserable reply of âDoubt soâ to your misleading little âHappy Holidays, dear!â did grant you a bit of selfish cheer. He was missing you.
As the decorated trees and many overrun shops breezed past the car windows, you smiled to yourself, nuzzling into the red scarf heâd gifted you. Though when the time came to rap at his door, after getting through the apartment security, you found a sudden knot forming in your throat. What if he didnât want you to see you? The plans after all had been seemingly set in stone - you return back home and spend the time there. What if heâd been preparing to go out with friends? What if he wasnât even home? Youâd look even more foolish after going through all this trouble.Â
Shaking off the nerves, you gathered yourself and knocked before the sliver of cowardice could nestle once again. You could hear Tannie bark on the other side which was a rather good indication he was home and just a second after were elatedly greeted by the sound of slippers shuffling across the floor. You threw a wink at the camera showing his doorstep, barely having the time to jump out of the way when light speed they were thrust into your face.Â
âYou might get stuck that way,â you teased as Taehyung stood in the doorway, floundering for air like fish out of the water.Â
âI thought you were going home for holidays.â
âWell, I couldnât leave you all alone,â you shrugged. âDonât say that youâre not - oof!âÂ
With the gentleness of a raging rhinoceros, Taehyung yanked you into his arms, swaying around as though he was hearing his favourite song.Â
âYou didnât even look at your present,â laying on the bed next to him, you pointed at the still-wrapped gift perched on the nearby bedside table. With an elbow braced against his head, he didnât even glimpse at the gift or attempted to deny the accusations.Â
âI will tomorrow,â he promised quietly and you hummed, twirling the button of his loose cardigan that truthfully sat too low on his chest for your mental well being.Â
âIâm sorry this probably wasnât the best winter holiday -â
âIt is,â he interrupted without blinking, tone gaining such a lilt of fierceness, you raised your head in astoundment.Â
âDid your wish come true or something?â
âYes, it did,â he answered simply.Â
JUNGKOOK: Perching the laundry basket on your hip, you tilted your head to the side, curiously inspecting the green thing attached to the ceiling. You knew Jungkook had his fair share of quirks but putting herbs in the doorway⊠Shaking your head, you gave a resigned sigh and decided to leave your boyfriend be. But the green thing seemed to haunt you like the worldâs shittiest ghost. It wasnât enough for it to be shoved in a random corner of Jungkookâs own home but soon it invaded yours as well. Waking up, with one cheek pressed against his chest, you shook Jungkook awake, pointing concernedly at the vegetable hovering on the lamp above your head.Â
âWhat is that for?â you inquired, confused but he merely smirked, wagging his eyebrows in nothing but the most annoying fashion.
âWhy donât you tell me?âÂ
âHow would I know?â you grumbled, kicking a leg out of the covers, missing the affronted look Jungkook threw your way, when you missed his puckered up lips.Â
As the month dragged on, you grew increasingly perplexed at how Jungkookâs green celery seemed to simply appear wherever your eyes strayed to. You were growing half convinced he had these things half a dozen shoved down his pants.Â
âYes, mom, I got the correct size,â you defended, trying to spot Jungkookâs car in the underground car park of the hellsite that was a shopping centre during the holiday rush. A black carâŠin a shopping parking lot...like looking for a needle in a stack of needles. Finally, seeing the correct licence plate, you drew a heavy sigh of relief.
âIâve got to go, talk to you later!â
Upon getting in, you threw the many bags in the backseat, ready to yap Jungkookâs ears off with some overdue complaining only to fall promptly silent when seeing that piece of kale hanging from the car mirror.Â
âEhmâŠI donât think itâs an air freshener, Koo,â you gently informed him and he scoffed, lips jutting out in a deeply offended pout.Â
âWhat did I do?â you whined, receiving a dirty glare as an answer.Â
âDo you hate me or something?â he glowered after turning his head to the other side and laying his chin on the steering wheel.Â
âWhy would you say that?â
âYouâve not given me any kisses,â he pointed glumly at his spinach.
âWhy wouldâŠwhy would a bundle of herbs equal kisses?â you frowned, failing to see his logic. It wasnât like it was rare but youâve never been this confused, especially given how resentful he appeared.Â
âHerbs-?â then all of a sudden he broke out in roaring laughter, startling you immediately. Clutching at his stomach, Jungkook threw his head against the seat. âOh my god, Iâm in love with a dummy.â
âDonât call me a dummy!â you insisted. âExplain why artichoke equals kisses?â
Whatever you said set him off even further and loudly clapping, it would seem Jungkook would commit suicide by choking himself with laughter.Â
âá”Êłá”ᶊá¶Ê°á”á”á”,â he gasped, tears streaming down his cheeks and blissfully ignoring your budding irritation.Â
âFucking Elmo laughing ass,â you groused, turning up your nose and hissing when Jungkook pressed a wet kiss against your cheek. Â

In the U.S., pumpkin pie is almost mandatory at Thanksgiving, while pumpkin makes occasional appearances in sweet breads and sometimes a creamy soup during the fall and winter. But pumpkin holds a special place in the stomachs â and history â of Sephardim. This versatile fruit is used in cakes, soups, stews, puddings, jams, pastries and pancakes. It can be savory or sweet and baked, boiled, roasted, steamed or stuffed. And, yes, itâs a fruit much like avocados, tomatoes and squash.Â
Pumpkins have been around as a cultivated food for a surprisingly long time. Native Americans grew them for nearly 6,000 years before pumpkins became one of the first New World foods introduced to Europeans by Spanish explorers in the early 1500s.Â
During the 16th century, the Jews remaining in Iberia were nearly all conversos, converts to Christianity, with many secretly hanging onto their Judaism, often through food. During the 16th and 17th centuries, these secret Jews continued to flee Spainâs inquisition across Europe to the Ottoman Empire and throughout the Mediterranean and Middle East, bringing with them their love of this new ingredient, pumpkin. As Gil Marks notes in âThe Encyclopedia of Jewish Food:âThe presence of pumpkin in early Mediterranean dishes is usually a sign of Sephardi influence.â You can read more about the history of Sephardim and pumpkin here.
From this Sephardi influence, Italian Jews were among the first to robustly incorporate pumpkin into their cuisine, becoming known for their pumpkin-stuffed ravioli and tortellini, puddingsand sweet pumpkin fritters (fritelle di zucca). Sephardim who found new homes in what is now Turkey and Greece made many pumpkin dishes, including filling flakey Ottoman pastries to make borekas de kalavasa(pumpkin in Ladino, the language of Sephardim) and deep-fried pumpkin fritters or sweet pancakes, both called bimuelos de kalavasa. There are, by the way, different versions of the name, which include bumuelos, birmuelos and, in Central America, buñuelos.Â
We canât talk about pumpkins without bringing up its 21st-century status as a âsuper foodâ acclaimed for its nutrient-dense benefits. Pumpkin flesh is fat-free, and high in fiber, potassium and vitamin C. It provides antioxidants and is one of the best sources of beta carotene. All this adds up to being good for hearts, eyesight, weight control and cancer-fighting. Canned pumpkin still has these healthy benefits including 7 grams of fiber per cup, more than two slices of whole wheat bread. In fact, unlike most fruits and vegetables, nutritionally, canned pumpkin is usually as good, or even better, than the homemade puree⊠and a whole lot less work.
Sephardim recognize pumpkinâs importance during the fall holidays. At the traditional Sephardi Rosh Hashanah seder, one of the special seven blessings is symbolized by pumpkin (or its close relative, squash). At Sukkot, not only is pumpkin a fall crop, but the many seeds symbolize fertility and abundance. These pumpkin patties, bimuelos de kalavasa, are perfect for Hanukkah along with the deep-fried version.Â
So this year, for your very American Thanksgiving dinner and potato latke-laden Hanukkah, let these pumpkins patties bring an easy and tasty bite of Sephardi history to the table.
Notes:
To refrigerate or freeze, put cooked patties in an airtight container with layers separated by parchment paper. Can be refrigerated for four days or frozen for up to a month.Â
To reheat, defrost slightly, just enough to separate patties. Place directly on a parchment-lined baking sheet or on top of wire cooling racks placed on a baking sheet. Heat in 350°F oven for 8-10 minutes.
1/4 cup granulated sugar can be used instead of maple syrup.
Date syrup (aka silan) is available at Middle Eastern and some kosher markets.
These are best when served immediately, but the cooked patties can be kept warm in a 200°F oven on top of wire cooling racks placed on a baking sheet for up to 40 minutes.Â

The only thing an A&R man needs, Seymour Stein once said, was a good pair of ears. Stein, who has died aged 80, might have added indefatigable enthusiasm, a streak of opportunism and a shrewd business brain, all of which he deployed in a career that saw him sign the deals that launched the careers of Madonna, the Ramones, Talking Heads, kd lang and many others.
Those artists enjoyed their first hits on Sire Records, the label Stein co-founded in 1966 and with which he remained synonymous even after his company had been absorbed by the Warner Music group. By the time he stood down in 2018, unhappy with corporate politicking, Steinâs achievements had long since earned him a place among the finest ârecord menâ â as they were known â of his generation.
âI have no easily definable skills or talents. Iâm a hit man, a record business entrepreneur,â he wrote in the introduction to his autobiography, Siren Song, in 2018. He played no instrument and had no technical knowledge, for which he was ultimately grateful, believing it might have got in the way of an appreciation of artists who could not be judged by conventional musical standards.
The story of how Stein acquired the US rights to the then-unknown British band Depeche Mode for his label typified his modus operandi, based on instinct and energy. One day in 1980 he picked up the latest issue of a British music paper in his New York office and read about a new group signed by a UK contact, Daniel Miller, to his Mute Records label. On a hunch, he grabbed his passport, booked a ticket to London on Concorde, and went straight from the airport to meet the group in Basildon, Essex, their home town, an hourâs drive east of London. âI signed them on the spot,â he remembered.
Their subsequent success made them one of a string of British bands whose records he released in the US. When his rivals called him an anglophile, it was not always, he recalled, meant as a compliment. But it was British musicians, from the Climax Blues Band to the Smiths, who provided a bedrock for his business.
To sign Madonna Ciccone in 1982, he summoned the singer to his bedside at the hospital where he had undergone heart surgery. Having listened to her demo tape, he offered the 24-year-old $45,000 for three singles with the option to release an album. Going on to sell more than 60m albums in the US alone while helping to reshape feminism for a new generation of young women, she was his greatest success.
He was born in Brooklyn, New York, to Dora (nee Weisberg) and David Steinbigle, Orthodox Jews whose own parents had emigrated from Galicia, the region of eastern Europe straddling Poland and Ukraine. His father was employed in Manhattanâs garment industry while his mother worked at her familyâs market in Coney Island.
A heart murmur in infancy kept him away from sports at Lafayette high school, where he discovered that he preferred applying his prodigious memory to Billboard magazineâs charts of current bestselling pop records than to his lessons. The love of music was kindled by listening to the records brought home by his older sister.
During a summer holiday he talked his way into an internship at Billboardâs offices on 47th Street and Broadway. It was there that he met Syd Nathan, the myopic, asthmatic, choleric boss of King Records, the label of James Brown, based in Cincinnati. In 1961 Nathan suggested that he shorten his surname and offered him a job, asking, âDo you want to be a spectator or do you want to be in the game?â
It was at King that Stein learned, from the ground up, how the record business really worked. His knowledge would be expanded while working for George Goldner, another old-time record man, at the Red Bird label, where the Shangri-Las and the Dixie Cups were the hit acts.
There he met the songwriter and producer Richard Gottehrer, with whom he founded Sire, each putting in $10,000. The Climax Blues Band, Barclay James Harvest, Matthews Southern Comfort â all from the UK â were among early successes, along with an album by the Dutch band Focus, before the pair began releasing their own self-recorded albums from 1970.
After Gottehrer had left the label in the mid-1970s, Stein and his wife Linda could be seen patrolling the New York clubs, scouting a new generation of local bands. They were quick to pounce on the Ramones, with their two-minute blasts of brattish attitude, and the cooler art-school rock of Talking Heads. From the UK came Echo and the Bunnymen, Soft Cell, and the Pretenders, whose American singer, Chrissie Hynde, was impressed by Steinâs extraordinary recall of lyrics old and new.
As well as continuing to sign emerging acts â many of them from the UK, such as My Bloody Valentine, Aphex Twin and Everything But the Girl â Stein also played a significant role in the later careers of established stars. Brian Wilsonâs eponymous first solo LP was released on Sire in 1988; the following year Lou Reedâs artistic momentum was revived by the first of a series of Sire albums, titled New York.
While on a constant search for new music, Stein used his fortune to eat well and to collect art and antiques, including The Siren by the pre-Raphaelite painter John William Waterhouse, which he sold at Sothebyâs in London in 2018 for a reported $5m. In 1983 he helped found the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, into which he was inducted in 2005.
He and Linda Adler were married in 1971, shortly after she had recovered from the shock of his announcement that he was gay. Their formidable and often turbulent partnership, which also produced two daughters, was ended by divorce after seven years. Samantha, their elder daughter, died of cancer in 2013. Stein is survived by their younger daughter, Mandy, and by his sister, Ann.

Source websites are CBS news, Berkeley School of Public Health, & science direct host platform for the paper. Important to note the organic tampons tested in this study were NOT free of these toxic metals because exposure is ubiquitous on some levels.
Edit: not to burst anyone's bubble's but I thought it went without saying that disposable pads are usually made from the same sorts of materials as tampons.
From Fast Company:
The study was conducted on 30 unique tampons from 14 different âtop sellingâ brands in the U.S. and Europe. The researchers assessed the products for 16 different metalsâincluding lead, arsenic, nickel, mercury, and zincâand alarmingly, they reported finding measurable concentrations of all 16 metals âin at least one sampled tampon.â
Unfortunately, the paperâs corresponding author, Jenni Shearston, told Fast Company that the names of the brands in the study could not be shared.
Most notably, every tampon that was tested contained some amount of lead
Also:
Compared to the concentrations of other metals, researchers found high levels of calcium and zinc in the products. They also identified differences between organic and nonorganic brands, finding that organic tampons tend to contain less lead but more arsenic.
Fast Company
Unfortunately, not all reusable period products are guaranteed to be free of harmful metals or chemical compounds.
This New York Times Wirecutter article details the unintentional PFAS exposure vs intentional addition of PFAS chemicals to products:
Forever chemicals are everywhere, including in period and incontinence productsâeven in some that companies claim are free of such substances.
Thatâs the conclusion from independent lab testing we solicited that looked for signs of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) in 44 productsâincluding period underwear, tampons, menstrual cups, and moreâand found plenty.
&
The researchers found that nearly half of the 44 period and incontinence products we sent for testing showed fluorine levels suggesting unintentional PFAS contamination (meaning these substances could have slipped in during production, packaging, shipping, or beyond). And eight products showed high enough levels of fluorine to suggest that PFAS-treated material had been added to them.
... Two of the 10 pairs of period underwear we sent showed high enough levels of fluorine to suggest that PFAS had been added to them at some point in the manufacturing process. Two of the remaining eight showed levels that suggested unintentional PFAS contamination. These included period underwear from brands that have published documentation certifying that their products are free of these substances.
Unfortunately it's nearly impossible to avoid PFAS exposure altogether due to its prevalence in textiles and a wide variety of other goods (see also: anything marketed as non-stick) and how frequent unintentional contamination happens. For reusable cloth items, it's recommended to wash them before using.
I'm not always sure if Mamavation is...entirely reliable, but they have tested a wide variety of period underwear and ranked their results by fluorine detected in parts per million. (The brands I've tried â Bambody, Modibody, and Aisle all had non fluorine detected results. Saalt's period underwear also corrected an issue which brought them to 0).
Likewise per the Wirecutter article, surgical grade silicone menstrual cups/discs tested extremely low for fluorine (if at all) - seemingly suggesting unintentional exposure when present.
The issue is that no product is free of all concerning chemicals or metals, there's currently very little regulatory testing, and no transparency about how much of this exposure is incidental/unintentional/environmental and how much is additive (on purpose, if PFAS). The tampons likely aren't going to kill you, but cotton and viscose production is often chock full of dangerous/toxic chemicals and we have no idea to what extent the consumers or manufacturers are being impacted by this.
my period is back again and id like to take this moment to remind everyone with a uterus to avoid using tampons at all costs, if you can. a recent study was conducted with 14 different popular brands of tampons, revealing that every single one of them contained toxic metals such as lead, arsenic, and more.

Reuse way forward in packaging sectors â Zero Waste EuropeÂ
Evidence suggests that reuse systems are the way forward for various packaging sectors, including takeaway food and drinks, according to a new report by Zero Waste Europe. Switching to these systems may reduce greenhouse gas emissions by as much as 54% in Aarhus and 34% in Berlin, the report based on these two city case studies in Europe says.
In line with the recently agreed EU Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR), this new report, produced by Eunomia Research & Consulting, titled 'Facilitating the Adoption of Takeaway Reuse Systems,' shows the course of action for public authorities to maximize the environmental and economic benefits of reuse systems.Â
The report explores the costs associated with six formats of single-use and reusable takeaway packaging systems based on the two city case studies and investigates the policy instruments likely to drive higher levels of market adoption of reuse systems for packaging. While the difference in net cost varies by format, small vendors in cities such as Aarhus in Denmark and Berlin in Germany could see cost savings covering takeaway drinks cups and food service formats while large businesses may face higher costs due to the economies of scale favoring single-use packaging.
The study, seen by Packaging South Asia, modeled the climate change impacts associated with providing a single serving of takeaway food or drink across all six packaging formats used in Europe â bowls; boxes for pizza, burgers, and sushi; and cups for warm and cold drinks. All results were normalized to individual servings of takeaway items â for instance, reusable packaging impacts are allocated per serving based on the packaging's total lifetime servings.Â
The study found that, for all formats except pizza boxes, switching from single-use (both plastic andÂ
paper) containers to reusable ones in an efficient system has good potential to reduce GHG emissions. The extent of possible reduction varies between container types, with cups showing the largest reductions. Some types, such as pizza boxes, are likely to need further design improvements to fully realize the benefits of reuse. Â
The report says while single-use packaging seems cheaper, there are hidden costs, such as those related to litter clean-up, litter disamenity and carbon impacts, that make it more expensive for vendors and consumers than a reuse system. To level the playing field, these external costs must be factored in, and public authorities should implement fiscal measuresâsuch as levies or taxesâto create fair competition with its single-use counterparts.
In addition to fiscal intervention, the report outlines a series of complementary measures: while setting minimum requirements for reuse systems or making reuse the default packaging option in shops can encourage gradual shifts, more stringent measures like setting meaningful targets for reuse or establishing an outright ban on single-use packaging are considered more effective.
The results show there is definite potential for a reusable system to outperform a single-use system in the takeaway sector, the report says. âHowever, such a system must be designed and implemented well. Some of the key assumptions are driven by aspects of behavior that require a mindset change, one that must be ingrained into societal norms. While the study demonstrates the art of the possible, this cannot happen without thinking beyond simply swapping one packaging type for another.âÂ
According to Larissa Copello, packaging & reuse policy officer at Zero Waste Europe, nobody can question the fact that reuse systems for takeaway packaging are needed to address our waste crisis. âBut without a serious scale and a rock-solid framework, it's just not going to cut it. Single-use packaging still dominates the market, with reuse playing catch-up. Itâs time to level the playing field through policy intervention to unlock reuseâs full potential.â
Andy Grant, technical director, Eunomia Research & Consulting, says increased interest in the development of reuse systems for takeaway packaging within EU cities, regions and member states is a positive step forward. âHowever, single-use takeaway packaging is currently the prime choice for vendors due to its low cost and convenience, with externalities unaccounted for in supply chain costs. Our analysis shows that to enable reuse systems to compete against these strong market forces, public authorities should implement specific policy measures to level the playing field. This will set up the right conditions for reuse systems to thrive and eventually become the norm.â
Fernando RodrĂguez-Mata, director general at the New European Reuse Alliance, states that âAs pioneers of a future where reusable packaging becomes mainstream, we need to create a level playing field with single-use alternatives. This starts by acknowledging the hidden and externalized costs of the latter, often disregarded by policymakers and public authorities. Then, we must adequately apply the polluter-pays principle, making producers responsible for bearing the total costs of the end-of-life of the packaging they place on the market. This report is unique in shedding light on the costs associated with both reusable and disposable containers for six of the most common types of takeaway packaging. The results are unambiguous: we need policies that provide the conditions and incentives to transition to well-designed reuse systems, unlocking their full environmental and economic potential."
According to Louise Lerche-Gredal, managing director at Plastic Change, plastic is deeply rooted in modern lifeâs consumerism and convenience culture. âThe massive consumption of plastic has led to plastic pollution affecting our environment, biodiversity, climate and health. The only way to mitigate the consequences from plastic is to reduce the demand for plastic. When we move from single use to reuse of our products, we reduce the need to extract new resources from the planet and we reduce the negative consequences from increasing plastic production.â
Geir SĂŠther, SVP circular economy and head of TOMRA Reuse, says, âSince the Aarhus pilot began in January 2024, the municipality has seen less litter from disposable cups on city streets. Also, the largest vendor participating decided to replace all disposable beer and soda cups with reusables, reducing on-site litter and waste management costs, following the success of the pilot. However, achieving the necessary adoption levels for full environmental benefits remains challenging, despite positive feedback on the systemâs convenience. We believe regulatory measures are essential for reusable takeaway packaging to become the norm. The reportâs findings from the Aarhus pilot should be valuable for other cities and countries considering similar systems.âÂ

ESG Trends in the Green Packaging Industry
Green packaging or eco-friendly packaging or sustainable packaging is anything that reduces the environmental impact. When it comes to the impact of green packaging on the environment and society, it has a very high negative impact both in terms of environmental and social factors.
Fast-moving consumer goods (FMCG) companies, packaging manufacturers and retailers have taken a giant stride towards a circular economy with investments in green packaging. Consumersâ preferences for sustainable packaging and the repercussions of plastics on the environment have prompted governing bodies to look beyond plastic bans.
Spain introduced Plastic Tax (a special tax on non-reusable plastic packaging) by Law 7/2022 to promote a circular economy and manage waste and contaminated soil; the law came into force on January 1, 2023. In August 2021, the Whitehouse introduced REDUCE (Rewarding Efforts to Decrease Unrecycled Contaminants in Ecosystems) Act to encourage recycling and impose a USD 0.10 per pound fee on virgin plastic resins used for the single-use product, rising up to USD 0.20 per pound in 2024.
With single-use plastic becoming ubiquitous, the burden on the environment and society has become a grave concern. So much so that green packaging has become synonymous with biodegradability and instrumental in fostering corporate social responsibility. That said, several companies have received the flak for greenshiftingâa part of greenwashing wherein brands shift blame from themselves to consumers in a way that would not hold specific companies accountable for the environmental crisis. Several pundits, including Heather Rogers, claimed that Coca-Cola and companies, such as Dixie Cup launchedâKeep America Beautifulâaimed at making Americans believe that it was their personal responsibility to keep the environment clean.Â
Environmental claims are pervasive in Europe, too. The Guardian cited a Changing Markets Foundation report, noting that P&G âs Head and Shoulders shampoo bottlesâdyed blueâcannot be recycled further, although these products are touted as being made of beach plastic. Meanwhile, P&G stated that the pack was recyclable and is no longer available in the U.K. While consumer protection laws are in place, better ESG performance has become invaluable for brands to avoid landfills and bolster share value.Â

Amcor Invests in Responsible Packaging to Enhance Environmental Profile
Sustainable packaging solutions have received global traction to facilitate a circular economy. Recycled-ready products can be the mainstay for brands striving to keep abreast of ESG trends. For instance, Amcor is gearing up for 30% recycled material across its portfolio by 2030, up from the previous target of 10% by 2025. In January 2022, the company committed to establishing science-based targets and attaining net-zero emissions by 2050. It is contemplating augmenting recycling value for PET Thermoformed Trays; boosting value in PET recycling; using on-pack recycling instruction; minimizing virgin plastic use in B2B plastic packaging; and bolstering recycling value in rigid HDPE and PP.Â
Amcor has forayed its penetration in Latin America to ramp up âinclusive and economically viable recycled projects.â It joined forces with Delterra in OlavarrĂa, Argentina to fund the project boosting recycling, waste collection and composting. OlavarrĂa could recover 2,000 metric tons of plastic annually by 2024. It is worth mentioning that the brand is poised to make all packaging recyclable, reusable or compostable by 2025. In FY 2022, Amcor Flexibles Latin America teamed up with a customer to create an innovative compostable packaging solution for paper-made butter and margarine.Â
Mondi Navigates Social Initiatives to Enhance Sustainability Solutions
The need for positive social practices has prompted industry players to inject funds into diversity, health & well-being, and community welfare and play a part in overcoming sustainability challenges. Mondi expanded its footprint in Africa through investments in corporate social projects and offering sustainability training opportunities in South Africa. Besides, in 2022, it poured âŹ8.9 million (approximately USD 9.8 million) into social initiatives to underpin environmental protection, health, education, infrastructure and local enterprise. Amidst Russiaâs invasion of Ukraine, the packaging and paper group donated âŹ2 million (roughly USD 2.2 million) to the World Food Program for humanitarian causes.Â
Mondi furthered personal development opportunities, mental health and diversity and inclusion. The company tested Mental Wellbeing Index for employee surveys across different locations to emphasize safety, mental health, inclusive behavior and climate action. Additionally, in 2022, approximately 31% of all employees participated in the online Performance and Development Review Process.Â
DS Smith Reinforces Good Corporate Governance
The principles of sound corporate behavior, board diversity, transparency, ethics & compliance and anti-corruption have become paramount to underscore brand position. DS Smith is aiming to engage 100% of its people on the circular economy and is optimistic about removing 1 billion pieces of problem plastics from supermarkets by 2025. Bullish corporate policies could complement buoyant strategies to achieve the target and spearhead the ESG rankings. The company has formed a circular business around sustainable packaging.Â
The prevalence of bottlenecks, such as bribery and corruption, has compelled DS Smith to introduce strict anti-bribery and anti-corruption policies. The company has exhorted a zero-tolerance approach to bribery and corruption and urged to conduct third-party background checks by reviewing third-partyâs likely business partners; and the payment terms, among others. The company also prepares a companion report, along with the sustainability report annually, to provide a deep-dive into the quantitative detail of ESG and sustainability performance across non-financial indicators.Â
At a time when sustainable packaging could bring a green revolution, forward-looking companies are expected to inject funds into ESG strategies. For instance, in March 2023, DuPont joined forces with the members of the Water Resilience Coalition to infuse USD 3 million to boost access to safe water and sanitation. The high-impact investment validates Grand View Researchâs projection of the global green packaging market at 6.1% CAGR from 2020 through 2028.Â
