365 Day Movie Challenge (2017) - #61: Union Depot (1932) - dir. Alfred E. Green

Given the right opportunities, Alfred E. Green could be a great filmmaker, as evidenced in his pre-Code masterpiece, Baby Face (1933). Therefore it is not surprising that Union Depot, which is a bit like Grand Hotel set in a train station, runs like clockwork and displays fine direction, creative camerawork by cinematographer Sol Polito and excellent performances by the many actors. Douglas Fairbanks, Jr. and Joan Blondell play the two leads – a man recently released from jail from vagrancy and a showgirl on the run from a neighbor-turned-stalker, respectively – and the couple’s fast-moving romance (Fairbanks picks Blondell up when he is under the impression that she is a prostitute) is totally believable.

Other plum roles in the film are played by Guy Kibbee (Fairbanks’ friend, released from jail at the same time), Alan Hale (a crook involved in a counterfeit money operation), David Landau (a tough but fair detective), George Rosener (the creep obsessed with Blondell) and Frank McHugh (a drunk from whom Fairbanks steals money and a nice suit, which magically fits him just right), and you can also catch sight of George Chandler, Dorothy Christy, Mary Doran, Maude Eburne, Ethel Griffies, Theresa Harris, Eulalie Jensen, Charles Lane, Lucille La Verne, Mae Madison, Dickie Moore, Toshia Mori and Polly Walters, among others, in uncredited parts. The story, which concerns Fairbanks, Blondell and Kibbee getting mixed up in Hale’s money scheme thanks to a series of coincidences and chance encounters, is never realistic enough to seem like a gritty tale of survival of Great Depression; despite the flimsy narrative, the performers give their all and they make you care about every beat of the script.
