Robots (2005)

Research: The Art of BlueSky Studios (Book)
Bluesky Studios is a animation studio, founded in 1987 by Carl Ludwig, Eugene Troubetzkoy and Chris Wedge. The studio in Briarcliff Manor was the home and beginning of the studios. The company, although small, had a great passion for animation and despite developing animation software, produced some amazing pieces such as Epic (2013), Ice Age (2002), Robots (2005) and Rio (2011).

Queen Tara’s lilac dress - Concept art by Michael knapp.
The aim that the studios wanted to achieve was lighting affects in a 3D space. As shown by this Xenomorph from Alien: Resurrection (1999) you can see how the lighting suddenly adds depth and shape to the flat image. They worked with character CGI work with the Xenomorphs, which nicely contributes to my previous work studying Alien Covenant (2017).

Hiring illustrators Peter de Seve and Peter Clarke to produce and create the sketchs for the characters they began to bring the visuals more to life. Like other concept artists that I have researched, de Seve works in a similar way in that he most know the characters personality and traits before designing the character.

Its interesting reading how they describe the transition from paper to 3d software. They talk about how the character had to be the right proportions to be able to act out poses, and de Seve's biggest challenge was to be able to draw the character from all angles as well as just front facing. To help with this Mike Defo made a sculpture of the drawings with the help of the Modelling Department.

Blue Sky Animation
Blue Sky Studios is an American animation film studio from Greenwich in the state of Connecticut, USA. The studio was founded in 1987 by Michael Ferraro, Carl Ludwig, Alison Brown, David Brown, Chris Wedge and Eugene Troubetzkoy after the company they worked with one of the visual effects studios behind Tron (1982), this then shut down. Blue Sky Studios has been owned by 20th Century Fox since 1997. Using its in-house rendering software, the studio had worked on visual effects for commercials and films before completely dedicating itself to animated film production in 2002 with the release of Ice Age.
Ice Age was one of the animated films that we looked at, i found the process that it took to make ice age very interesting as it was such a long film that had many different aspects, illustration is the original steps to designing the characters, then it is down to the Sculptures to interpret the illustrators drawings into 3D characters with claw and then once the creators are happy with the aesthetic it is covered in digital dots and lines which allow it to be scanned into the computer and then digitally animated, once the basic scene is done its given to another team of animators who then add detail.
a for my animation i used 2D illustration to animate as well as 3D clay animation and then edited it on a computer, obviously after sketching and planning. i thought the way and order of which they made ice age was similar to mine.
i also very much admire the classic pixar digital animation style.
