amitoufo he is carbondated
It's the Year of the Snake. Destiny 2's Heresy just came out. But this ain't about her. I sit on your shoulder, I am your xiaoren.
I'm Taiwanese! Let's carbon date The Drifter!
Lightbearers retain their semantic memory (facts, concepts, ideas) and procedural memory (memory of how to do things) of their original life before death. This is implied from game/lore instances of Guardians with unique accents, ethnic coding, memory of languages that are obscure post-Collapse, even cases of Guardians retaining pre-rez war PTSD. It is outright confirmed by Sen-Aret, a Guardian who- due to the sheer age of her remains or some error by her Ghost- was raised with only the knowledge she had in life, and had to learn about modern weapons/language from other Guardians.
Why does this mean anything? It means that the way a Guardian prefers to dress, talk, and generally behave tells you where they came from pre-rez!
Aside from his voice actor being Vietnamese, his entry in the official cookbook is banh mi, a Vietnamese dish, and his clothes are Chinese, which would point to him being Hoa, the Han people of Vietnam. (He also wraps his clothes in an orientation specific to corpses, because he doesn't count Lightbearers as truly alive humans.)
Behavior-wise, though, have you noticed how obsessed he is with jade? The coins, the necklace. Jade is a very precious stone in the Sinosphere, and jade jewelry is for giving luck or protection to the wielder- what you will hear less commonly is that it is meant to work by breaking instead of you when something happens. We give them to kids and elderly for this reason.
(You can wonder, for a second, the jade coins he always plays with before Gambit rounds, wraps around certain weapons for you, and the Red String of Fate ornament for Malfeasance. Is this a man perpetually deeply terrified for everyone or himself, or is he every middle aging ah-yi who just got back into religion while you were in school?)
So he's Vietnamese and the Chinese influence means his pre-rez life had to have been after Chinese imperial interference with Vietnam. Unfortunately, four different historical periods between 111 BC and the 1400s isn't good carbon dating. KE SHI NI HUI KANDAO THE SANDWICH,
banh mi is a baguette sandwich. this kind of bread comes to vietnam in the mid-19th century from French colonizers, and only during WWI did a mixed flour version make this bread accessible outside luxury. Early 1900s le. But "post-1900s" isn't a better narrowing down than "BCs to 1400s" in a future setting like Destiny.
Except that Drifter's banh mi recipe specifically uses pâté. This was only a common banh mi filling before the 1950s, when the partition of Vietnam sent an influx of northerners to Saigon and led to the Saigon sandwich that is modern banh mi. So, 1910s to 1950s. And the fact that he defaults to hanfu rather than Western dress or more modern standard Vietnamese ethnic clothing like ao dai skews him having been an adult on the earlier end of this time frame or living in a more rural area where colonization ideas were not as enforced. (One could explore him having other Vietnamese forms of cultural expression like lacquered teeth, actually.)
Ain't that something? He could have lived through WWI or even saw the beginning of the Communist revolution. The possibility that his first life was a survivor of colonization, war draft, and/or violent civil war could add a lot to readings of his character, especially his C-PTSD, but that's a whole other post if the people demand it. It's a neat thing to explore, huh?
And don't call him a rat le! Bad enough already the game think that is cute! White people calling East Asians rats is generally a slur in reference (from my collection) to immigrant "infestation" and part of general stereotypes about their uncleanliness (they cook with gutter oil, they eat rats, they cheap they scam they lie dadadada). You want source bigger than I grow up with white people shout in my face and their children pull their eyes to squint like a "jap"? Look up WWI propaganda posters about Japan. They did not invent that out of nowhere, they make Japanese people into rats because that's something they already say.
"It's just about Japanese-" what if I told you a large part of Western racism about Asians is that they can't tell the difference and don't care. and they're making fun of similar cultures and features.
"My Asian friend said it was okay-" the asian friend values your friendship and your comfort more than what they feel when you say slurs, dude. sorry i had to be the one to tell you that. one friend (or stranger online) giving you the pass to say it in front of them doesn't mean you're allowed to say it to everyone.
"it's fictional-" Real East Asian people getting beat down by Sinophobia matters a little more than how cute you think it is to call a Vietnamese man an animal that your culture associates with filth and plague.
"Chinese zodiac animal-" The snake is right there. The game won't shut up about how snake he is. We're having a Drifter-heavy episode right in the beginning of the snake lunar year. His personality matches the charm, mystery, and wisdom associated with the sign. He is never thematically associated with rats. He is never respectfully associated with rats.
It would be one thing if it was another asian character calling him that in the context of the rat's folkloric characteristics, but this is an American game by an American studio writing someone voiced by a non-asian to call him a rat as an insult about his cleanliness and food choices. Good for you if that doesn't hurt your feelings! Hurt many more people than you! They more real than him!
Good game story. Mistakes happen! Doesn't mean you have special privilege to repeat it.
He is snake! Viper! Asp! Cost zero dollar to say that instead! Don't keep a pet slur in your pocket!

A bit about me!
🍄🏛️🌲🏛️🏔️🏛️🌲🔮🌲🏛️🏔️🏛️🌲🏛️🍄
I’m Isaac, I’m a baby polytheist born and raised Christian in the PNW! I’m pretty scarred from Christianity and the ablism I suffered in my upbringing as a result of autism and ADD, and the “special” schooling I received as a “treatment” for it. I am cautiously re-exploring spirituality, inspired by my 75 year old neighbor who is a witch! I’m starting my journey with Hellenism, Celtic Paganism, and Norse paganism and they have always been a fascination to me. I’m deeply connected to the earth and nature and always have been, and would love to become more spiritually in twinned with it.

I'm not sure why this is apparently important to say but I didn't make Olrox a bottom in fics because I see him as femme. If you equate being femme with being a bottom, that's a you problem. I write him as a bottom because back when I was thinking about how to set up Mizrox's and Alurox's dynamics in October 2023, it was just easier to write and more fun to make Olrox the bottom (and honestly I had arguments for doing it either way or just making them all versatile; Adrian is versatile, and what he chooses is partner-dependent; I could see Olrox being vers depending on the partner, too; Mizrak is more difficult to parse, but I did draft early versions of You reluctant demon and Too much conversation where the positions were reversed, and ultimately went with what's published). If folks want Mizrak or Adrian to be bottoms, that's perfectly fine, live your dreams (Adrian canonically bottoms at least once anyway; Mizrak bottoms for Olrox in my fic, Being Tender, largely because of logistics of tiny human + giant snake). And if you want to write femme bottoms, go for it.
Also, if you see a guy with long hair and assume that means he's femme, that's a you problem (the 80s called, they'd like a word with you). Especially from ethnic groups where both men and women historically have long hair. And it kind of mm... plays with racist patterns of emasculating men of color. Olrox is a hot buff dude whom I personally see as very masc. He's not as buff as Mizrak, but man's still buff (not that femme folks can't be buff, but I find it strange that people seem to either be ignoring how buff he is or focusing solely on the fact he has long hair for the "he is femme" arguments). And his style of dress was typical for men - particularly wealthy men/men hoping to rise in station - at the time. Please look at the history of high heels. There's an argument to be made for androgyny, but also just... learn more about different cultures? I also don't personally think Olrox is androgynous at all (no shade on androgynous folks, but he just isn't), despite comments insisting otherwise. Then again, lots of folks like to remove his beautiful square jaw...
Also not sure how to explain that people of all genders, historically, have worn jewelry. Often as a statement of class/wealth/family. Jewelry/an emphasis on said jewelry is not an indicator of being femme.
Obviously if anyone wants to write/draw him as femme, that's fine, knock yourself out. Just been seeing some weirdness in the tags for a while.

♡Lynette Vega♡
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Here it is!! The lore post about my girl!! @aspenm00n @ccstiles
Full name: Lynette 'Artemis' Vega
Nicknames: Lyn. Annette. Pretty bug. Star eyes. Bed bug.
Pronouns: she/her
Sexuality: pansexual/demisexual
Gender: AFAB
Realm: Al'terra
Hometown: Montell
Ethnicity and Race: middle eastern/human
Birthday: 29th of October
Age: 24 years old
Height: 5'5
Weight: 164 lbs
Disorders: Synesthesia and dyslexia
Job occupation: wandering doctor and an altruist for halfbloods.
MBTI: INFP-A
Family members
Believe it or not this girl's family is both alive and healthy.
Lynette was born in a loving home with caring parents and 3 older brothers. They were all followers of Kel.
Her brothers—from oldest to youngest, are: Aayan (33 y/o), Elias (27 y/o), Rowan (26 y/o). Lynette has a strong bond with all of them, they all have occasional hangouts where they catch up on everything they miss.
Aayan is a doctor, he was what inspired Lynette to become one as well. Elias is a temple guard, and Rowan is an architect!
Lynette's bond with her parents, Salma and Samuel, is just as strong as the one with her brother—if not a little more. Her parents were strict but loving, making sure Lyn and her brothers are living comfortably and happily.
Nadia used to be a wandering doctor, but now is a stay at home mother, while Samuel is a famous architect
So yeah—the Vega family is both functional and loving
Important backstory events
TW! Implied SA, slight gore description, and suppressed trauma.
Lynette mostly had a normal childhood, the first major thing that happened..
I. At 7 years old. Lynette and her brother, Rowan, were attacked by a wolf halfblood. They weren't sure if he was drugged or just violent towards humans, all they knew was they were in danger and bleeding profusely. They were both saved by a dawnbreaker, unfortunately it was a little late for her brother—his vocal chords were completely destroyed, beyond saving. Rowan went mute after that, and Lynnette was both guilty and traumatized by this incident..
II. At 9 years old. Little Lyn had to stay with a distant family member that she didn't really...like. It was all going okay, up until the last day. She was stuck in a room with 'snakes' wrapping around her. It felt wrong, it was wrong.
Lynette never felt clean after that incident.
But she never spoke a word.
III. At 13 years old. Lynette meets Tony! Yes, that Tony. It was a slow developed friendship, but a loyal one. They were both great friends to each other, having hangouts every weekend where they pulled pranks, made makeshift jewelry for the other, and gave comfort when one of them was sad.
Lynette also started learning first aid from her big brother, Aayan. He taught her everything he knew, and little Lyn was a very fast learner. Memorising all the medical terminologies in less than a week.
IV. at 15 years old. Lynette officially sets her goal to be a doctor, and help everyone, including halfbloods. Her family was against it..the helping halfblood thing, especially after the incident with her brother. But they let her be, as long as she stays safe, that's what matters.
Her friends were confused about her decision.. especially Tony. Why would you help what hurt you? But they trusted her enough to not get too involved with halfbloods..
V. At 18 years old. Lynette graduated! This was an especially special day in her life! She can finally get started on her medical degree—and she does!
Another event that happened here..a day after her graduation, Tony confesses, and boy was the feeling mutual. And so..Tony and Lynette were officially a couple from then on!
VI. At 20 years old. Her goal to become a doctor was annoyingly slow..so, she decided she'll finish 2 more years, and become a wanderer, only to learn about all the different methods of healing, the different cultures of it. Her parents weren't too worried, her mother did the same thing when she was her age.
VII. At 22 years old. Lynette and Tony unfortunately decided to break up. Their views were far too different, it was like they were strangers to each other rather than lovers. So, they decided to part ways, and pretend they never knew each other.
This was also when Lynnette discovered the sanctuary, they were short on medical supplies and she offered her help—but of course, they were all extremely suspicious of her, but as time went on, she would gain everyone's trust.
VIII. At 23 years old. Lynette meets..Marco.
It was an interesting friendship..a halfblood and a human. Lyn found him injured in a forest, of course she had to help him, and she did.
And slowly, it turned from a friendship to a relationship.
Lil facts about Lynette.
-The nicknames Lyn and Annette were from her parents, pretty bug was from Tony, star eyes from Marco. She doesn't mind which nickname others call her.
however! The nickname "Artemis" was given to her by the halfbloods in the sanctuary. Since she'd take the role of both a protector and a healer for the younger creatures.
-she can speak Arabic! Also very soft spoken.
-she's mostly a complete mystery to all cities and kingdoms in all of Al'terra, but her life story is surprisingly very well known in the sanctuary.
-the scar on her cheek is from when she was attacked by the wolf halfblood.
-the owner of Maria's raven boyfriend /hj
-she still has a good relationship with her family, even after wandering away.
-Lynette is a very shy and quiet person, but she's extremely adventurous.
-Not really a talker, she speaks in actions. But give her some time, and she'll be more open with you.
-she helps halfbloods in rehab, ones who were stuck in the arena and addicted to Malasythe. She's always patient with them, even when getting yelled at and continuously insulted.
-she's very observant of others emotions, reading everyone like a book.
-Lyn's a decent fighter..but really only fights when there's no other choice.
-while very into medicine.. she's also very into poison. Sometimes even making her own special brew of them.
-does not sleep.
-she hasn't met Bodie and Timmy....yet.
-her timeline takes place in the same universe as Warren x Bodie /srs
Tumblr media
That's all! For now. I'm definitely remaking this soon after I flesh out her story more.

The Story of Solah Shringar
Tumblr media
The Indian bride is the epitome of grace, elegance, and beauty. Her attire and traditional Indian bridal jewelry catch every eye and leave a lasting impression on everyone. While her wedding outfit accentuates her best features, her Indian bridal jewelry adds a subtle shine and a touch of sophistication to her entire look.
As per tradition, the Indian bride embellishes herself with 16 adornments on her wedding day. These adornments are called Solah Shringar. This ritual has been practiced since ancient times and is an integral part of bridal preparations.
The story behind the Solah Shringar features Rati, the wife of Kamdev, the Hindu god of love. Rati engaged in severe penance to appease Goddess Lakshmi. She was then blessed with the 16 adornments from Lakshmi and wore them to impress and marry Kamdev.
Tumblr media
16 adornments (16 sringar)are
1. Sindoor
The first adornment is Sindoor, also known as kumkum or vermillion. Sindoor holds a special place as it marks the beginning of a woman’s new journey as a bride. Sindoor is applied by the groom on the forehead between the hair partition of the bride. The bride then continues to wear sindoor throughout her married life.
2. Hair care (Kesh Sringar):
We now focus on the ‘Kesh’, or hair. The Indian bride embellishes her hair using fragrant flowers and glittering headpieces. Traditionally, the bride made three braids that represented three holy rivers, Ganga, Yamuna, and Saraswati, and the trinity of the Hindu gods Brahma, Vishnu, and Mahesh. The fragrance of flowers keeps the bride fresh throughout the day and her Indian bridal jewelry embellishes her hairdo, adding another layer of elegance and beauty to her overall look.
3. Maangtika
The part of the forehead where the maangtika rests is believed to be the home of Ajna Chakra or the third eye. When the bride wears the piece of Indian bridal jewelry on her special day, she is believed to be connected with her third eye and has the ability to control her emotions and activate her knowledge, wisdom, courage, and willpower.
4. Bindi
The bindi also takes us to the third eye. Bindi comes from the Sanskrit word bindu, which means ‘point’ or ‘dot’. The bindi is closely associated with improving concentration and retaining energy. It is one of the most popular adornments worn by the Indian bride and is known internationally.
Tumblr media
5.Kohl or Kajal
From the forehead, we move to the eyes. Kohl, kajal, surma, kanmashi, kaadige, kaatuka, and kan mai are some names for one of the oldest natural beauty products in the world. Kajal accentuates the eyes of the bride and is believed to ward off the evil eye in various cultures. The darkening around the eyes also protects the wearer from the harsh rays of the sun.
Kajal is an essential element of the solah shringar and makes the eyes look more prominent. It is undoubtedly a beautiful way to enhance the natural beauty of the bride.
6 .Karn Phool or Earrings
A wedding day look cannot be completed without a set of dangling earrings. Karn Phool is a Sanskrit term that translates to ‘flower of the ears’ and is an essential part of the solah shringar.
7 .Nath(nose ring)
The nose ring is another beautiful element of the Indian bride’s attire and is a symbol of valor, fertility, and spirituality. The large nose rings hooked onto the hair with a chain take the bride a step closer to creating her ideal look. It is one of the most ethnic elements of Indian bridal jewelry and a wedding day look is surely incomplete without it.
8 .Haar or Necklace
The one thing that brings the whole look together is the necklace. Necklaces are said to represent safety and abundance and are believed to help the wearer control their emotions better. Some necklaces feature specific motifs or gemstones that are believed to bring good luck and ward off evil spirits.
Tumblr media
9 .Bajuband
This element of traditional Indian bridal jewelry is worn on the upper arm. The bajuband is believed to keep evil spirits away and protects the wearer. The Indian bride can embellish her wedding outfit with all sorts of armbands that are encrusted with diamonds and other colorful gemstones.
10 .Bangles, Bracelets, Choodiyan
Bangles and the Indian bride are inseparable. They’re a part of traditional Indian bridal jewelry that a woman always wears. It is believed that bangles and bracelets bring health, luck, and prosperity to the wearer and are more than a jewelry item or accessory for the traditional Indian woman. There are various wedding ceremonies related to bangles and bracelets across cultures that show us their significance in Indian culture.
11 .Hathphool and Aarsi
The hathphool is a clever mix of a bangle and a ring. Bringing the best of both together, this element of traditional Indian bridal jewelry embellishes the hand and wrist of the bride. The interesting crossover of the two pieces surely adds more flavor to the wedding day look.
A thumb ring known as Aarsi is also worn by some brides. Aarsi contains a small mirror. This mirror allows the bride to catch a glimpse of the groom since she is covered in a veil and cannot see the groom’s face.
12 . Mehndi
Henna, commonly known as mehndi, is undoubtedly one of the most amusing parts of a traditional Indian wedding. It is believed that mehndi brings good luck and joy to the bride. The darkness of the mehndi represents the strength of the bond between the bride and the groom. The solah shringar of the bride is incomplete without her hands and feet embellished with beautiful mehndi designs that add to her overall wedding day look.
Tumblr media
13 . Kamarband (waist band)
The use of the kamarband, or waistband, is scarce in North Indian weddings but it is an important part of a South Indian bride’s trousseau. The piece of Indian bridal jewelry is adorned with gemstones and is used to accentuate the female’s body and keep her bridal saree in place.
14 . Anklets and Toe Rings
Commonly known as payal and bichhu, these elements of traditional Indian bridal jewelry embellish the feet of the bride. Payals can be recognized by the beautiful chime sounds they make whenever the bride walks. Toe rings are seen as a sign of marriage and a bride wears them until the death of her husband.
15 . Itar
Itar is the perfume that a bride applies to freshen her aura and stay fragrant throughout her special day.
16. Wedding Outfit
Finally, the one thing that clubs every element together and brings the bride’s imagination to life is the wedding outfit. The traditional Indian bride wore the classic red wedding outfit but with the evolution of Indian weddings, other colors have started to take center stage as well.

I don’t think anyone understands how much Francisco Morales plagues my MIND. Idgaf if he’s a drug dealer with PTSD.
(CW: mentions of being a swiftie… sorry, and possibly either being female or liking feminine things)
Tumblr media
I don’t care because, in my mind he’s the most perfect man that would call me “baby” and pet names in Spanish.
Francisco Morales would beg for kisses and slap my ass even when I pretended to be annoyed.
Cause he’s a handy man, when he’s fixing something around the house, and I ask him if he needs help with anything, he’d say yes, but then he’d make me “stand there and look pretty”
Frankie Morales would let me make my ethnic food for him and fucking love it because he loves me. (Even when I accidentally add too much of a certain sauce and it’s strong; because that’s how I was taught).
Frisco Morales would hold me so hard while we slept that I wouldn’t be able get up for a midnight piss and he’d cling to me just as hard during heat waves when his body heat is unbearable.
He wouldn’t care that I’m too fiercely independent for my own good. He’d just smile and shake his head as I tried to do something wildly out of my bounds of rationality.
He’d make fun of me for liking my coffee overly sweet, but steal sips of whatever overpriced iced latte sits in the cup holder.
He’d let me play whatever Taylor Swift song I wanted in his truck… because he loves me. And overtime he’d find himself humming along or drumming his fingers on his steering wheel to the overplayed albums that I force him to listen to.
In fact, after all those days in the truck with his passenger princess, he would give me his spare set of aviators when it’s too sunny out, because I forgot mine.
We spend so much time together in that truck because in the warming months of spring and into the hot months of summer, he likes to frequent farmers markets to buy me fresh flowers and locally made jewelry.
Francisco Morales would love my body at any season of life, because he’s Francisco Morales
Fuck I could go on and on
Someone help me. HELP ME!
Also note: sorry if this wayyy to specific. It was supposed to be a short post but then I couldn’t stop. Also I’ve been obsessed with Francisco Morales for over a year, so these little head canons have been brewing. 🥰❤️

The Nebra Sky Disc
Tumblr media
By Frank Vincentz - Edited version of this photo File:Oberhausen - Gasometer - Nebra sky disk.jpg, Public Domain, https://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?curid=117229202
The Nebra sky disc is a 30cm (12in) bronze disc that weighs about 2.2kg (4.9lb) that has a blue-green patina. On the surface, gold is inlaid with gold in circles and crescents. These are generally attributed to be the sun or full moon, the crescent moon, stars. There are two arcs on the edge, though one is now missing its gold, that are thought to denote the rising and setting of the sun, the distance between them marking the difference between the solstices at 51°N. Another arc toward the bottom is thought to be the solar boat.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
By Dbachmann, CC BY-SA 3.0, https://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?curid=1500789
The Nebra sky disk was created between 1800 BCE and 1500 BCE and it was found with a cache of weapons, tools, and jewelry that was found in 1999. The wood that remained with the swords was dated to about 1600-1560 BCE. It is thought that the disc was several generations older than the swords. They are thought to be made by the Únětice culture, an archaeological culture from central Europe. An archaeological culture is one that shows shared styles of artifacts and buildings, but we don't know if they were an actual ethnic or political culture or part of a trade network.
Its discovery was at the hands of treasure hunters who were looting sites with a metal detector. The disc was damaged and the site was partially destroyed with the spade the looters used. The looters then sold the items they found for 31,000 DM (Deutsche Mark). From there, it's theorized that the items were sold multiple times and were sold for up to 1,000,000 DM. In 2001, the existence of the disc became public knowledge. Then, in February 2002, the police conducted a sting operation on a couple who'd put the disc up on the black market for 700,000 DM. The looters were traced and in a plea bargain, they led the police to the site where the disc had been found. Other items and traces of bronze in the soil verified their claims. In 2003, the state of Saxony-Anhalt, Germany tried to register a trademark on the disc and sued Querfurt, a town in Saxony-Anhalt, for producing souvenirs with the disc depicted on them, as well as the publishing houses of Piper and Heyne. The court in Magdeburg, the capital of Saxony-Anhalt, heard the case, with the state arguing that since the disc had been recently discovered, that copyright law applied to it and the defendants arguing that since the object was about 3500 years old, that copyright law no longer applied. The Magdeburg court sided with the state. On appeal up to the Federal Court of Justice in 2009, the court sided with the defendants. Saxony-Anhalt then went on to file trademark with the European Union Intellectual Property Office. In 2023, Saxony-Anhalt filed a DMCA against Wikimedia Commons and Wikimedia Deutchland filed a DMCA counter-notice stating that the implementation of Article 14 of the Directive 2019/790 of the European Parliament placed the disc in the public domain.

The bronze in the disc was made with copper from Bischofshofen in Austria and tin from River Carnon in Cornwall in England. The gold appears to have come from a couple of locations and was applied in four separate phases. The first part, which included 32 small circles, the large circle, and the crescent, was made of gold from Cornwall. The second phase was the two arcs on the sides of the disc, which had one small circle on the left moved slightly inward and two on the right covered over. The gold for this and the next two phases of development came from the Carpathian Mountains. The third phase was the addition of the solar boat. The fourth phase was the addition of between 38-40 holes on the edge punched out, each about 3mm in diameter. The damage due to looting makes it difficult to know for sure.

The disc shows the Pleiades on it as a cluster of seven circles just north of the line created by connecting the winter solstice sunrise and the summer solstice sunset. With its connection to the crescent moon, its thought that this was used to synchronize a lunar and solar calendar. This was also found in the ancient Babylonian MUL.APIN. In the MUL.APIN, a leap month should be added with the Pleiades and the crescent moon appear close to each other in the early spring, which happens about every three years. There are trade connections between the area the disc was found and ancient Babylon. It's also thought that the number of stars is also significant, representing the 32 days between the 'new light' of the moon and when the depicted conjunction of the moon and the Pleiades. It could also represent the 32 solar years in 33 lunar years (adding in the large circle) within 2 days. It is also possible that the solar boat represents the path of Vega in the sky at the winter solstice.

Chapter 12: Name me Dragon
I filled out my forms, I submitted them along with the administration fees. I did that over a week ago.
Today is my court date.
I find it fascinating as I enter the building and cue up to the metal detector that this is the first time since dracomorphosis that it occurs to me that I’m naked. I’m going to court naked, except for my purse.
The purse goes in a basket on the conveyor, to be examined more closely by the little boxy x-ray machine. Rhoda helps take it off for me, before dealing with her own stuff, because she’s accompanying me.
Today she’s my emotional support human. That’s what she told me. And I appreciate it.
But then she says that she just really wants to be there to see me get my new name.
She seems more proud of me than I am.
And I appreciate that, too.
It’s really nice.
The guards are cordial and usher me through, and I set off the metal detector.
There are sighs all around, and I’m directed to step aside while one of the officers examines me with a wand. And the wand doesn’t stop humming. There is not an inch of me that doesn’t set it off. I’m wondering if this isn’t telling me something about my physiology I didn’t know. But I’m also getting nervous about it.
Another wand is used to the same effect. Then both wands are tested on Rhoda, who rolls her eyes, and they don’t buzz.
The guard lowers his chin and looks at me through furrowed brows and says very straight faced and sternly, “Do you swear not to breathe fire or eat anyone while you are in this building?”
“Yes,” I say.
“Okay. That’s going to have to do. Do you know where you’re going?”
“Yes,” I reply.
“Courtroom A,” Rhoda supplies, reaching over to put my purse around my neck again. “Judge Nguyen.”
“Excellent. That’s name changes today, isn’t it?”
“Yes.”
“Congratulations, I hope it goes well for you,” the guard says.
“Thanks.”
“Thank you,” Rhoda adds.
“The elevator’s that way,” the guard gestures.
And we go.
For some reason, I half expected a recreation of the Matrix lobby scene. I don’t know what makes me more rattled. That there was the one glitch that caused the extra hullabaloo, or that it went so smoothly anyway.
When we get to the courtroom, we’re early. But it’s open, and people are filtering in from the thin traffic of court goers, lawyers, and petitioners headed to other places. Most people in this building are regular citizens taking care of unfortunate or hopeful business, dressed in everything from a yellow windbreaker and a hoodie to a Men’s Warehouse suit. The people with more expensive clothing, if they are here, are already in the rooms they want to be in, few and far between.
In this courtroom, there are a handful of women of different ethnicities and ages in either their Sunday best or professional work clothes befitting a restaurant hostess, and a couple men accompanying their teenage children. And one couple that look like they’re feeling all newlywed. Presumably. For some reason, besides the children, I’m gendering everyone based on how they look, and I’ve been trying to avoid that.
I can’t sit in any particular chair, but we find a space that’s usually set aside for wheelchairs and I use that. I’m not exactly mobility impaired, but I am disabled in other ways, and I’m certainly space impaired. I’ve definitely gotten bigger.
I’ve been hoping I might be the Artist of transformation, just so that I could change my own size and shape, to avoid the day I wouldn’t be able to enter a building like this. But, Chapman’s agreed to work on another piece of jewelry for me, to reduce my size back down to where I started when I wear it. It just won’t be ready for a couple years, is all.
And as I sit in that spot, I feel my tablet buzzing in my purse while I wait for the Judge to join us. I resolve to ignore it through the whole process. Nothing is as important to me right now as getting through this court hearing.
And then the bailiff announces Judge Nguyen’s entrance and tells everyone to stand, which I do along with everyone else who is capable of it. By the time this happens, a few more people have joined us, including someone in a wheelchair who is across the aisle from me.
Nguyen enters looking slightly less like a judge than I expected. She’s dressed very professionally, but for some reason I expected a robe. But, maybe that’s for fancier courtes. Or just for photos? I’m going to have to look that up.
But she carries herself like a judge, and pushes her glasses up as she casually and cheerfully says, “Hello. Thank you for attending today. This is one of my favorite functions as a judge, and I hope to make this process as smooth as possible for all of you. You may be seated.” Then she sits down. “Now. When I call your name – your new name – I’d like you to come forward with your identification ready, and answer my questions. And when you and I are done, you may either be seated, or you may leave. If I award you your name, I will hand you your signed court order, which you should take to the clerk’s office to get it stamped and recorded. And the public list of name changes will be displayed in the hallway tomorrow morning. You won’t need to check that, because you’ll already have the paperwork you need verifying your new identity.”
She pauses to look around the room to see if everyone was listening.
“If you have further questions, the clerk can help you with them. Now, I’m going to go about this alphabetically by last name,” she says. “Can Corin Ascalia please come forward.”
I do pay a lot of attention to what is said, to make note of it and know what to expect, but my emotions and thoughts are occupied by how cool it is that I seem to be going through this procedure with other trans people.
Corin looks so happy, and they are bouncing a little bit throughout the whole interview, which is short.
And when Judge Ngunyen is done, she signs the court order, then hands it to Corin Ascalia with a hand shake, saying, “Congratulations. It is my honor to serve you with your new name, Corin Ascalia.” And she’s beaming with her own smile.
As Corin leaves looking pumped full of endorphins, Judge Nguyen calls forward the next person, who I guess is a single young woman who is probably changing her last name. I don’t know if it’s due to a marriage or a divorce, or to distance herself from her family. But she seems satisfied with her decision and pays extra attention to every direction.
With my new last name starting with a “D”, there are only two other people before I’m called up. I do my best to appreciate each of them in turn, to try to remember who they are. But I’m getting too nervous and dissociating a little.
Then Judge Nguyen says, “Can Meghan Estragon Draconis please come forward.” And she looks directly at me over her glasses, and everyone else follows her gaze. She smiles. It’s not her first smile today, but it’s directed at me and it looks genuine.
Rhoda pats me on my shoulder, then hands me my ID and birth certificate, which I take gingerly in my mouth.
And I get up and walk down the aisle to Judge Nguyen’s bench.
My tablet buzzes, and I continue to ignore it. It doesn’t seem Judge Nguyen heard it.
“May I see your identification?” she asks.
I place it on the bench, and she picks up my card and then my birth certificate and looks at them reverently and carefully, comparing them to my file, which she’s just opened in front of her. She nods, placing my items back on the bench in front of me. Then she speaks some more.
“Meghan, do you swear that you take this new name in good faith? That you are not using it to evade responsibility or debt? And that it represents who you feel that you are and want to be moving forward?” she asks.
“Yes,” I reply, in my own voice. I gathered from all previous applicants that I wouldn’t need my tablet for this. I’m proud to use my own syrinx to speak these words.
“Very good,” she says. “Then it is my honor to sign this court order stating that you are, from this day forth, to be known as Meghan Estragon Draconis.” She doesn’t offer to shake my hand, but she does carefully bundle my identification with my newly signed court order, and files it in a folder with a paperclip, before holding it out to me. Her eyes are sparkling, as she adds, “I’m proud of you for this. It’s a good name. It suits you.”
She obviously saw my deadname. She knows I’m trans, not just a dragon taking on a new draconic name.
I’m a little overwhelmed.
“Thanks,” I say, wishing I’d learned a more formal version. I could add “you” now, but thanks you” would sound even weirder.
Then, I smile as I take my paperwork.
I take a step back and bow low, lowering my shoulders and my head, rising quickly enough after a beat that she doesn’t have much chance to comment. Then I turn and walk proudly back up the aisle to Rhoda, my head held as high as possible.
My tablet is going mad with buzzing.
Dammit, what the fuck is happening?
I can’t deal with it. I need to go to the County Clerk’s office. That’s next.
The clerk’s office is just annoying simple bureaucracy with a line and more paperwork. But short paperwork. Mostly paperwork handled by the person behind the counter.
And then we’re done and making our way out of the courthouse.
It’s Thursday, September 19th, and I’ve received my new legal name on Talk Like a Pirate Day. I kind of want that to be special, but it really mostly feels kind of funny.
But the clouds coincidentally move just as I step out of the building to uncover the sun, which shines down on me with as much warmth as it can muster, and I’m struck.
It literally feels like the Earth, the mother of all dragons, is blessing me and my new name, and it’s like the blessing is warming my heart, gizzard, and fire sack directly. And for quite some time after that my very soul feels larger than my body and visibly radiant.
Rhoda lets me see her tears, crying about something happy.
She pats me on my shoulder again, and then manages to gasp out a question, barely able to talk from emotion, “Maybe you should check your messages? Or should I do that for you?”
I look at her, partially closing my eyes, and then I look down the street toward our coffee shop, which is just two blocks away.
“Yeah,” she says, more strongly. “Let’s go do that over some tea and cookies.”
There are a bunch of things I do not think about as we walk to our actual home, our coffee shop. But it’s probably a good idea to review them here anyway. Things that might matter.
They are certain to occur to me fairly soon, in any case.
I’ve not been particularly attendant to my groups of people, humans or dragons. I set them up. I pushed them in directions I wanted them to go. Or, rather, I stated clearly what I hoped they would become. And then I found myself forgetting about them.
I’ve only delved into Discord, for instance, to deal with the things I’ve wanted to deal with, and I’ve found it hard to look at or review many of the notifications. I’ve been pretty good at private direct messages, but there haven’t been very many of those directed specifically at me.
I’ve treated my group SMS chat fairly similarly, though I’m more engaged with that. Until today, obviously. I was busy today.
I did post that document of advice for direct action and group security that Rhoda gave me to my discord and to our group chat. But then, I didn’t really do anything more than that. I’m not sure what I expected of myself or others there. I just did what I felt I could, and then I got distracted by other things. And then I didn’t hear from the Arboretum Klatch, as I’ve continued to call them, since.
Everything seems to have been fine and operating smoothly.
And I also haven’t really been paying a lot of attention to the local news, even though my situation seriously depends on it. I guess I’ve been relying on Rhoda and Chapman to keep tabs on that and alert me to any issues. But it means I don’t immediately know what’s going on in the government or what’s about to come down. I don’t know who has said what, and I’m not as familiar with the local politicians and their stances as I really should be.
I’ve been scared about Daniel Säure, and his influence over the local law enforcement and his demonstrated ability to kidnap me in my sleep. And so I’ve been focusing on addressing that directly by searching for that big gun I can use against him. My innate, inherent power that I’m maybe supposed to have, having been the center of the dracomorphosis.
I’ve maybe been a little too focused on that, but I still don’t know what I could have done differently, except maybe take time to write more letters with the help of the other dragons? It seems silly, though. I don’t know if our letters are even read.
Except the Mayor had been impressed with the one I sent her.
And this is saying nothing about national or even global politics, because fuuuuuuuuuuuuck. The tidbits of news I get about that from other people’s conversations and memes on the internet are terrifying and too much to handle.
Really cool things are happening with dragons around the globe. Really surprising and wonderful things. Individual people are praising and lauding the dragons in their lives. And dragons are reporting how surprisingly wonderful their humans are.
But then there’s the violence. The legislative violence and the physical violence. The words that people in power say on occasion.
Before August 24, the global focus seemed to me to be on trans people, and that was bad enough, and it was one reason I was still in the closet.
Now, it’s all about us dragons.
And I’ve been doing my best to ignore all that and focus on me, my people, my territory, my block, my building, my coffee shop, my two Artists and their weird stories and theories, Rhoda, and my name. And mostly on the latter three, because that’s where I seem to have the most strength, potential impact, support, and joy. The most agency.
I think I’ve been following the common old advice to do the easier things, the small things, to make sure the fundamentals are taken care of first, and work outward from there as possible.
But I’ve definitely been avoidant, too, and I should fix that.
I have also been feeling like I’m forgetting things, losing track of little details. But since I’ve forgotten them, I can’t do anything about them, and so I brush the thought aside and move on.
And since I’ve gotten my name changed to what it feels like it has always been, for those two blocks of walking with Rhoda in the late Summer sun, I’m simply blissful.
If I’m thinking of anything else, I’m maybe wondering if my soul is as old as Wentin’s.
As Rhoda opens the door for me, and I strut into the coffee shop all ready to utter my full name with my own syrinx, which I spent the last week and a half teaching myself how to do, I see the look in Jill’s eyes.
They are wide with alarm and eager to get my attention. She’s shaking behind the counter, and Cerce is carrying that nervousness too as she tries to work the espresso machine to fulfill orders.
The rest of the shop is very quiet, despite how many customers are in it. They’ve all been looking at their phones, tablets, or laptops. But now they’re looking at me.
