How Cost Estimating Services Contribute to Construction Project Success
Cost estimating services are fundamental to the construction industry, offering detailed insights into the financial aspects of a project. Whether it’s for a small home renovation or a large-scale commercial development, cost estimation plays a crucial role in ensuring the project’s success. The accuracy and comprehensiveness of a cost estimate can significantly impact a project’s timeline, budget, and overall execution.
In this article, we’ll explore how cost estimating services contribute to construction project success, from accurate budgeting to resource allocation and risk management.
1. Accurate Budget Development
One of the core functions of cost estimating services is the creation of an accurate project budget. By analyzing various factors like material costs, labor rates, and equipment expenses, these services provide detailed, reliable cost projections that help project owners, contractors, and stakeholders set realistic financial expectations.
A well-constructed budget is the backbone of any successful construction project. It ensures that the project is financially feasible and allows for proper allocation of resources. Without a solid estimate, a project risks overspending, which can result in delays or the need for additional funding.
How it contributes to success:
Ensures that the project is financially feasible from the start.
Helps stakeholders set realistic expectations for the project’s financial scope.
Prevents overspending and ensures that funds are properly allocated.
2. Enhanced Project Planning and Scheduling
Effective project planning relies on accurate cost estimates. Cost estimating services help define the scope of the project and determine the time and resources needed to complete each phase. With a detailed understanding of material quantities, labor requirements, and equipment needs, project managers can create more accurate schedules.
This enables them to allocate resources more efficiently, anticipate potential delays, and stay on track throughout the project. An effective schedule minimizes downtime, helps maintain project momentum, and ensures that the project is completed within the planned timeline.
How it contributes to success:
Facilitates the creation of realistic, achievable project schedules.
Minimizes delays and disruptions through efficient resource allocation.
Keeps the project on track by predicting and managing potential setbacks.
3. Risk Management and Mitigation
Construction projects are often susceptible to risks such as unforeseen expenses, material shortages, and labor delays. Cost estimating services help mitigate these risks by identifying potential issues early on. Estimators can include contingency funds in the budget to account for unexpected events or changes in scope.
By proactively addressing these potential risks, cost estimating services enable project managers to develop strategies to minimize their impact. This can help avoid costly overruns, ensure project continuity, and prevent unnecessary delays.
How it contributes to success:
Anticipates potential risks and integrates contingency planning.
Helps project teams remain prepared for unexpected costs or changes.
Reduces the likelihood of cost overruns and delays due to unforeseen challenges.
4. Improved Communication and Transparency
Clear communication is essential for the smooth running of any construction project. Cost estimating services enhance communication by providing all stakeholders with a transparent breakdown of costs and financial expectations. With a clear estimate, contractors, clients, and subcontractors are all aligned on the financial aspects of the project.
Transparent communication reduces the likelihood of misunderstandings or disputes over financial matters. It fosters trust between project owners and contractors and ensures that all parties have a shared understanding of the project’s budget and timeline.
How it contributes to success:
Promotes clear, open communication among all project stakeholders.
Reduces the risk of conflicts or misunderstandings related to costs.
Fosters trust and collaboration between contractors, clients, and suppliers.
5. Accurate Resource Allocation
Efficient resource allocation is key to keeping a construction project on track. Cost estimating services break down the resources required for each phase of the project, helping contractors determine the necessary quantities of materials, labor, and equipment. This enables them to avoid shortages or waste and ensures that resources are used effectively.
With an accurate understanding of required resources, project managers can schedule labor and material deliveries more effectively, minimizing delays and maximizing productivity. Proper allocation of resources also reduces costs, which helps keep the project within budget.
How it contributes to success:
Ensures the efficient use of resources, minimizing waste and shortages.
Helps schedule deliveries and labor efficiently, avoiding project delays.
Optimizes productivity and keeps the project on budget.
6. Competitive Bidding and Contract Negotiation
Cost estimating services play a critical role in competitive bidding and contract negotiation. By providing accurate and comprehensive estimates, contractors are able to submit well-informed, competitive bids that reflect the true costs of the project. Accurate cost estimates prevent contractors from underbidding or overbidding, which could lead to financial loss or missed opportunities.
For project owners, precise cost estimates help evaluate bids from different contractors, allowing them to select the most cost-effective and reliable option for their project. This transparency ensures that both parties are on the same page, leading to smoother contract negotiations.
How it contributes to success:
Ensures that bids are competitive and aligned with project costs.
Helps contractors submit well-informed and profitable bids.
Enables project owners to select the best contractor based on accurate financial data.
7. Controlling Construction Costs
Construction projects are notorious for cost overruns, often due to poor cost management or unforeseen factors. With cost estimating services, project managers can track costs throughout the project and compare them to the original estimate. Regularly monitoring expenses allows project teams to identify any discrepancies or deviations from the budget and take corrective actions quickly.
This level of control helps ensure that the project remains within financial parameters and that resources are used efficiently. Effective cost control is crucial for maintaining profitability and avoiding budgetary problems.
How it contributes to success:
Helps keep the project within budget by tracking costs in real-time.
Identifies cost discrepancies early, allowing for quick corrective action.
Ensures that financial resources are used efficiently throughout the project.
8. Facilitating Long-Term Success and Sustainability
For construction projects to be successful, they must not only meet immediate goals but also contribute to long-term sustainability. Cost estimating services ensure that the project is financially viable over the long term by accurately forecasting the costs involved in construction, maintenance, and future upgrades.
This long-term approach helps avoid future financial challenges and ensures that the project can be maintained without compromising its quality or functionality. For example, a well-estimated budget will consider ongoing maintenance and operational costs, ensuring that the project continues to provide value after completion.
How it contributes to success:
Ensures the project’s long-term financial sustainability.
Helps anticipate future maintenance and operational costs.
Contributes to a high-quality, durable construction that stands the test of time.
9. Maximizing Profitability
At the core of every construction project is the need to deliver value. Cost estimating services help maximize profitability by ensuring that the project is completed on time, within budget, and to the desired quality standards. Accurate estimates help contractors avoid over- or under-spending, ensuring that each project phase is financially managed to generate the most value for all stakeholders.
For project owners, cost estimating services ensure that the project delivers the best return on investment. By accurately predicting costs and staying within budget, the project has the potential to be more profitable and cost-effective in the long run.
How it contributes to success:
Maximizes profitability for contractors and project owners.
Ensures financial resources are used efficiently and effectively.
Increases the likelihood of delivering a financially successful project.
Conclusion
Cost estimating services are a cornerstone of construction project success. From creating accurate budgets and managing risks to ensuring effective resource allocation and fostering clear communication, these services provide invaluable support throughout the construction process. By minimizing the risk of cost overruns, facilitating competitive bidding, and maximizing profitability, cost estimating services help ensure that projects are completed on time, within budget, and to the highest quality standards.
For both contractors and project owners, leveraging professional cost estimating services is an investment that pays off in the form of reduced risks, increased efficiency, and ultimately, a more successful project outcome.

Things the Biden-Harris Administration Did This Week #39
October 18-25 2024.
President Biden issued the first presidential apology on behalf of the federal government to America's Native American population for the Indian boarding school policy. For 150 years the federal government operated a system of schools which aimed to destroy Native culture through the forced assimilation of native children. At these schools students faced physical, emotional, and sexual abuse, and close to 1,000 died. The Biden-Harris Administration has been historic for Native and Tribal rights. From the appointment of the first ever Native American cabinet member, Secretary of the Interior Deb Haaland, to the investment of $46 billion dollars on tribal land, to 200 new co-stewardship agreements. The last 4 years have seen a historic investment in and expansion of tribal rights.
The Biden-Harris Administration proposed a new rule which would make contraceptive medication (the pill) free over the counter with most Insurance. The new rule would ban cost sharing for contraception products, including the pill, condoms, and emergency contraception. On top of over the counter medications, the new rule will also strength protections for prescribed contraception without cost sharing as well.
The EPA announced its finalized rule strengthening standards for lead paint dust in pre-1978 housing and child care facilities. There is no safe level of exposure to lead particularly for children who can suffer long term developmental consequences from lead exposure. The new standards set the lowest level of lead particle that can be identified by a lab as the standard for lead abatement. It's estimated 31 million homes built before the ban on lead paint in 1978 have lead paint and 3.8 million of those have one or more children under the age of 6. The new rule will mean 1.2 million fewer people, including over 300,000 children will not be exposed to lead particles every year. This comes after the Biden-Harris Administration announced its goal to remove and replace all lead pipes in America by the end of the decade.
The Department of Transportation announced a $50 million dollar fine against American Airlines for its treatment of disabled passengers and their wheelchairs. The fine stems from a number of incidences of humiliating and unfair treatment of passages between 2019 and 2023, as well as video documented evidence of mishandling wheelchairs and damaging them. Half the fine will go to replacing such damaged wheelchairs. The Biden administration has leveled a historic number of fines against the airlines ($225 million) for their failures. It also published a Airline Passengers with Disabilities Bill of Rights, passed a new rule accessible lavatories on aircraft, and is working on a rule to require airlines to replace lost or damaged wheelchairs with equal equipment at once.
The Department of Energy announced $430 million dollars to help boost domestic clean energy manufacturing in former coal communities. This invests in projects in 15 different communities, in places like Texas, West Virginia, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Kentucky, and Michigan. The plan will bring about 1,900 new jobs in communities struggling with the loss of coal. Projects include making insulation out of recycled cardboard, low carbon cement production, and industrial fiber hemp processing.
The Department of Transportation announced $4.2 billion in new infrastructure investment. The money will go to 44 projects across the country. For example the MBTA will get $400 million to replace the 92 year old Draw 1 bridge and renovate North Station.
The Department of Transportation announced nearly $200 million to replace aging natural gas pipes. Leaking gas lines represent a serious public health risk and also cost costumers. Planned replacements in Georgia and North Carolina for example will save the average costumer there over $900 on their gas bill a year. Replacing leaking lines will also remove 1,000 metric tons of methane pollution, annually.
The Department of the Interior announced $244 million to address legacy pollution in Pennsylvania coal country. This comes on top of $400 million invested earlier this year. This investment will help close dangerous mine shafts, reclaim unstable slopes, improve water quality by treating acid mine drainage, and restore water supplies damaged by mining.
Data shows that President Biden's Inflation Reduction Act (passed with Vice-President Harris' tie breaking vote) has saved seniors $1 billion dollars on out-of-pocket drug costs. Seniors with certain high priced drugs saw their yearly out of pocket costs capped at $3,500 for 2024. In 2024 all seniors using Medicare Part D will see their out of pocket costs capped at $2,000 for the year. It's estimated if the $2,000 cap had been in effect this year 4.6 million seniors would have hit it by June and not have had to pay any more for medication for the rest of the year.
The Department of Education announced a new proposed rule to bring student debt relief for 8 million struggling borrowers. The Biden-Harris Administration has managed despite road blocks from Republicans in Congress, the courts and law suits from Republican states to bring student loan forgiveness to 5 million Americans so far through different programs. This latest rule would take into account many financial hardships faced by people to determine if they qualify to have their student loans forgiven. The final rule cannot be finalized before 2025 meaning its fate will be decided at the election.
The Department of Agriculture announced $1.5 billion in 92 partner-driven conservation projects. These projects aim at making farming more susceptible and environmental friendly, 16 projects are about water conservation in the West, 6 support use of innovative technologies to reduce enteric methane emissions in livestock. $100 million has been earmarked for Tribal-led projects.

The latest wastewater surveillance data show that the COVID-19 pandemic has entered its tenth wave in the United States. Last week’s spike in wastewater was the highest percentage increase in transmission in almost three years, though these figures could be revised downwards and the full severity of the wave will only become clear in the coming weeks. One reason for the rapid jump appears to be a later start for the “winter surge” than is typical, and thus the virus could be quickly rising to a level that has now become typical for this time of year.
The Pandemic Mitigation Collaborative (PMC) model estimates that 1.6 percent of Americans are presently infected and capable of transmitting the virus to others. That is 1 in 64 people and represents nearly 750,000 new COVID-19 cases per day. That means that on a flight of 100 people, there is an 80 percent chance that at least one person is infectious; on a flight of 300 people that rises to a 99 percent chance.
This level of transmission exceeds the levels for 73 percent of the duration of the pandemic to date. Given the known incidence of Long COVID, the current levels of transmission are generating an estimated 200,000 new cases of Long COVID per week.
Not a word about this latest COVID-19 wave has been uttered by the Biden administration or any major outlet in the corporate media. The entire political establishment is in agreement on the need to enforce the pro-corporate policy of “forever COVID,” in which the working class and broad layers of society as a whole are condemned to unending waves of mass infection, death and debilitation with Long COVID.
The PMC model projects that the current winter surge could peak between New Year’s Day and January 7. Because COVID-19 transmission followed a completely different pattern in 2024 than any other year of the pandemic, it is more difficult to forecast transmission during the current surge. This year’s summer surge was unusually late and sustained, while also declining abnormally rapidly, and the lull between the summer and winter surges was atypically long.
The latest data on test positivity and emergency department visits from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) show both these indicators on the increase. Hospitalizations and deaths are typically lagging indicators, and although they have not yet increased, they are likely to rise as well in the coming week or two.
The new XEC variant continues to increase as a percentage of COVID-19 infections, now estimated at 44 percent, compared to 33 percent a week ago. It is now the most common variant, having surpassed the KP3.1.1 variant per the most recent data.
Given the total absence of governmental support for the renovation of infrastructure to ensure that indoor air is purified in public spaces, the only defenses against COVID-19 continue to be vaccines and non-pharmaceutical measures, such as social distancing and masking. Vaccination additionally protects against the most adverse outcomes of COVID-19, including death and hospitalization, while providing moderate protection against Long COVID.
Unfortunately, misinformation coupled with the potential expense of paying for a costly vaccine have resulted in extremely low vaccination rates for COVID-19. Per the latest CDC data, only 21.0 percent of American adults reported that they have received the latest vaccine released at the beginning of the Fall. Coverage of children is even worse at 10.6 percent, or approximately half the rate of adults.
Dr. Alexander Sloboda, medical director of immunizations for the Chicago Department of Public Health, said:
There’s still a lot of misinformation, disinformation, particularly around the COVID vaccine, so just trying to overcome the misinformation, disinformation that’s out there with correct information is what we’re trying to do. Obviously, it’s a kind of an uphill battle.
In another development this week related to the science of COVID-19 treatment, a study from 2020 that purported to show that hydroxychloroquine was an effective treatment was finally retracted. According to the journal’s retraction notice, the paper was pulled because of ethical transgressions and major flaws in methodology.
Even though numerous scientists immediately spotted and exposed the flaws of the study, it took four years of campaigning before the journal editors finally relented and retracted the paper this month. In fact, a lead author on the study, Didier Raoult, at one point threatened legal action against the whistleblowers who challenged the study. One of the journal editors was a co-author of the study, likely a factor in the long time period between the paper being discredited and it being retracted.
The scientific discourse over the study included subsequent identification of additional serious methodological flaws in 2023. Recently, three of the study’s authors wrote a letter to the journal requesting a retraction, acknowledging that no confidence could be placed in the “results” and stating explicitly that they no longer wished to be associated with the paper.
Notably, Raoult has so far had 28 papers retracted, including this one. Raoult leads the French Hospital Institute of Marseille Mediterranean Infection (IHU). Overall, 32 papers authored by IHU members, including Raoult, have been retracted. Investigations are underway on at least 100 more papers by this group, mostly due to concerns that the studies violated ethical standards.
The discredited hydroxychloroquine study spawned massive misinformation promoting the drug as a treatment for COVID-19. The most infamous episodes involved then-President Donald Trump, who in a period of two months in 2020 made 11 tweets about unproven therapies for COVID-19 and mentioned them 65 times in White House briefings. Trump repeatedly referenced this now-retracted study, even after it had been discredited. During that time, purchases of hydroxychloroquine on Amazon surged by 200 percent.
With Trump returning to the presidency and having nominated a slate of anti-science quacks to every public health-related leadership position in the federal government—overseen by the notorious purveyor of anti-vaccine disinformation Robert F. Kennedy, Jr.—the working class must heighten its vigilance against medical misinformation and follow the advice of principled scientists. Any one of Trump’s nominees is damaging, but collectively it will be catastrophic when their pseudo-science becomes official policy.
Official policy under Biden already is criminally permitting the pandemic to continue to cause death and disability virtually unchecked. The constant emergence of new variants, including at least three major new variants this year alone, is a product of the dismantling of public health measures to contain the virus. Protecting the public’s health requires more than just vigilance. The working class must organize on its own political program to replace capitalism with socialism, a social system that prioritizes human health over private profit.

At the end of January, clips from a film about the housing market in Russian-occupied Mariupol began circulating on TikTok and X (formerly Twitter). After the start of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine, the Russian army held Mariupol under siege for 85 days, all the while relentlessly pummeling the city with missile and air strikes. Mariupol was effectively reduced to rubble, and no one knows how many lives were lost — though some estimates place the number as high as 100,000. As soon as the Russian authorities had captured the city, they set about rebuilding it and erasing any trace of war crimes.
The film, titled “Shocking Prices for Apartments in Mariupol — Millions for Ruins” was released in November on the YouTube channel “Mirnyie” (the plural form of “peaceful” in Russian and the first part of “peaceful inhabitants,” a Russian term used to distinguish non-combatants from military personnel in conflict zones). The Mirnyie project is led by “war correspondent” Regina Orekhova, a journalist from the Russian state news agency RIA Novosti. In 2022, she received a special award from the Russian Union of Journalists for “courage in fulfilling journalistic duty.”
The Mirnyie project, as one might surmise from its name, explores the lives of ordinary people in the conflict zone. “These are the stories of people who found themselves caught in the crossfire — some left, while others stayed. [We share] their experiences, how they survive, and what they think about,” reads the description. Judging by the channel, Orekhova primarily works in Mariupol. Previous reports of hers cover topics such as Azovstal’s underground tunnels, the sea port, city maternity hospitals, and the drama theater, which was destroyed by a Russian airstrike while an estimated 1,000 civilians were sheltering there.
In the introduction to the half-hour film, Orekhova promises to answer the following questions: “How do you buy an apartment in Mariupol? Is it more profitable to invest in ‘ruins’ that you can resell once renovated? How do you rent commercial space for a business here and how much does it cost? What kinds of apartments are for sale and what determines the price?” Orekhova explains that in Mariupol, there are “damaged buildings” as well as “brand new and renovated ones.” “The real estate market is very unconventional. We’ve studied it in detail and we’ll tell you all about it,” she promises.
Orekhova speaks with three local realtors who show her properties for sale in different parts of the city. As it turns out, these are mostly half-destroyed apartments, hastily abandoned by residents who left all their personal belongings behind as they fled. However, even such properties, according to the realtors, are in high demand. In some cases, actual ruins, where just parts of the walls survived the bombings, are for sale. However, Russian construction companies will restore these buildings later for free, which significantly increases prices. There’s also the rare property untouched by war, or newly renovated apartments in restored buildings. Prices for these range from four to six million rubles (about $50,000-$66,000). Apartments in historic Stalin-era buildings in the center of Mariupol with surviving inner courtyards (i.e., enclosed parking), renovated entrances, and sea views are considered premium housing.
The film doesn’t explain why or, more importantly, by whom all the housing in Mariupol was destroyed. Realtors talk evasively about “all those events” or “military actions.” Orekhova asks how many real estate agencies are currently operating in Mariupol. “Well, there aren’t many surviving citizens per square meter, you could say, but they exist, of course,” a realtor answers.
Showing a damaged three-room apartment in the center of Mariupol, real estate agent Natalia remarks that “one shouldn’t focus on the consequences of what happened to the apartment but on the apartment’s potential.” There’s no electricity, the ceiling is leaking, and personal belongings, including toys and a highchair, lie strewn about — but the windows have been replaced. Natalia points out the “magnificent view” from the balcony. “These buildings have survived more than one war and, as you can see, are still standing,” Natalia says encouragingly. According to her, it would be too painful for the previous owners to come back and see their home like this, which is why they’re looking to sell the apartment in its current condition.
The realtors say that apartments are mostly bought by newcomers “from big Russia” and bemoan that locals can’t afford newly constructed housing. According to them, Russian authorities introduced a special two percent mortgage rate for people from the self-proclaimed “Donetsk People’s Republic” and “Luhansk People’s Republic” who have Russian citizenship. But locals can’t get approved because most aren’t officially employed — there are no jobs with decent salaries in Mariupol.
Luisa, the head of a real estate management company, explains that it’s virtually impossible for Mariupol residents to get an apartment without Russia’s help. She says they “can’t afford to buy back their old homes in Mariupol or to purchase new ones.” When new construction is put up where their destroyed homes used to be, the mortgage payments are out of reach. Luisa recalls how an apartment building in the center, leveled in the bombings, was cleared away to make room for new construction. Residents were offered housing somewhere on the outskirts as compensation, but they weren’t able to buy apartments in the new building being built on their property, even though they’re legally registered at the address.
Tatiana, another realtor, thinks everything in Mariupol is “getting back on track.” She says people are returning, “even those who didn’t plan to.” “The demand [for apartments] is very high, much higher than the supply,” Tatiana explains. “If an apartment is in poor condition but at a good price, it goes quickly. The interested buyers are mainly newcomers. People from Siberia are also eyeing our seaside breeze.”
Tatiana tells Orekhova that everything is “looking up” for the city:
Mariupol has never experienced such rapid growth. The city is developing before our eyes. It’s happening in such a way that even we don’t know where things will improve tomorrow, where slums will turn into upscale neighborhoods. Because our sky is blue. When I say this, everyone smiles, actually. But before, our sky used to be gray or brown, never blue. And now life is getting better; every cloud has a silver lining. You just don’t want to remember the military operations; you go numb. But when you see what’s happening in Mariupol — everything will be fine, everything will work out.

Latest statistical figures of Germany
Some interesting facts emerged from the latest partial census in Germany, which was carried out last year.
Total population
The German population is 1.6 % smaller than estimated. Instead of the projected 84.1 million inhabitants, there are only 82.7 million. In 2011, there were 80.2 million residents in Germany.
Distribution of population
In the 11 years between 2011 and 2022, the population in cities grew whereas the population in rural areas shrunk. The strongest growing city was Leipzig with an increase of a whopping 19.1 %.
The city of Dessau-Roßlau, which consists of two smaller cities and lots of rural area in between, experienced the biggest loss of population with 11.7 % during the same time.
With the exception of Berlin and Brandenburg, all of the new German states experienced a loss of population.
Foreign citizens
In 2022, 10.9 million residents did not hold a German passport, that is 4.9 million more than in 2011. Offenbach am Main is still the "capital of foreign citizens" with a percantage of 37.9 %, while only 2.9 % of the residents of the Ore Mountain district in Saxony are foreigners. With the exception of Berlin, the percentage of foreigners is generally lower in the new German states.
Homes
There are 43.11 million homes in Germany, 2.5 million more than in 2011. There are 1 million more houses.
The average size of a home is 94.4 m². Generally, homes are smaller in cities than in the countryside with an average of 75 m² vs. 105 m². The homes are the smallest in the city of Dresden (average 71.2 m²), while the biggest homes can be found in the district of Cloppenburg (average 128.2 m²).
Rents
Renters had to pay on average a cold rent of 7.28 €/m². In the three south-eastern states of Thuringia, Saxony-Anhalt, and Saxony, the average rent was less then 6 €/m², whereas they were the most expensive in Baden-Württemberg, Bavaria, and Hamburg with more than 8 €/m². 4.3 % of the homes are uninhabited, most of them only for a short time such as for renovation, future use by the owner, or sale. Only 1.92 % of the homes in Hamburg are unused, whereas 14.55 % of the homes in the district of Altenburg-Country are empty.
Heating
More than half of the German homes are heated with gas, about 20 % with oil, 15 % are heated from long distance stations. Only 2.7 % use a heat pump, but 25 % of the homes built since 2016 have a heat pump. Since 2010, almost no oil-fired heatings are used since 2010.

Hoard of 17th-Century Coins Hidden During English Civil War Found
During a kitchen renovation, a family in England unexpectedly discovered a hoard of coins that was likely buried for safekeeping during the first English Civil War.
A family in England discovered nearly 400-year-old buried treasure during a recent home renovation project. The find includes more than 1,000 gold and silver coins that were likely hidden during the first English Civil War.

Betty and Robert Fooks unexpectedly unearthed the 17th-century hoard at their cottage in South Poorton Farm, Dorset, in 2019. Now, these coins have hit the auction block and sold for upward of $75,900 (60,740 British pounds), according to the hammer prices listed by Duke's, an auction house in Dorchester that handled the sales.
Robert Fooks made the discovery while pickaxing the kitchen floor to remove about 2 feet (0.6 meter) of flooring material, including modern concrete, old flagstone and bare earth. Then, he saw a broken glazed-ceramic vessel brimming with coins in the layer of soil dating back about 400 years. It's unclear if the bowl was broken before or during the recent discovery, according to Duke's.
The couple contacted a local finds liaison officer, who arranged for the coins to be sent to the British Museum, where they were cleaned and identified, according to The Guardian. The British Museum noted that the coins were likely deposited on a single occasion between about 1642 and 1644, dates likely based on the coins' mint dates.

The coins in the collection, named the Poorton Coin Hoard, range from modest sixpences, which were worth six pennies, to a coveted gold "unite" coin that was worth 20 shillings, or 1 pound, and depict the visages of English monarchs Edward VI; Mary and her husband Philip; Elizabeth I; James I; and Charles I, who ruled successively from 1547 to 1649.
Many of the coins sold individually or in groups at auction on April 23. A single gold coin of Charles I brought in the highest price, at 5,000 British pounds ($6,260), while some lots went for far more than their estimated value.
The period in which the coins were likely hidden — 1642 to 1644 — coincides with the first English Civil War, which lasted from 1642 to 1646. The three civil wars were fought between supporters of the English monarch, then Charles I, and Parliament, to determine the balance of power between the crown and Parliament.

"Perhaps the most important short-term significance of the Civil Wars was that it culminated in the execution of King Charles I in 1649 and a republic was established for the first time in English history which lasted 11 years," Waseem Ahmed, a doctoral student of history at University College London who specializes in 17th century British political history but was not involved in the hoard's discovery or analysis.
It's no surprise that people hid their money back then, as warfare during this time included the seizure of opponents' property, he said.
"If you were a royalist or suspected royalist, you could have your estates sequestrated (seized) by the Parliamentary side and vice versa," Ahmed explained. This may be the case for the 17th-century homeowner, as Dorset was a hotspot for troop movements and the turbulence that followed.
It's likely that someone buried the Poorton Coin Hoard with the hopes of safeguarding it and retrieving it later. And while the treasure was certainly safeguarded, its retrieval took four centuries longer than its owner likely desired.
"If we hadn't lowered the floor, they would still be hidden there," Betty Fooks told The Guardian. "I presume the person intended to retrieve them but never got the chance."

On the one hand, curses aren't real; but on the other, the yarn is obviously cursed
Once upon a time I made a sweater for my BIL and had so many accidents and fuckups that each stitch of the sweater was knitted at least two times, some of them three. As a result, I referred to this sweater afterwards as the Cursed Sweater.
But I didn't know what I was talking about.
The purple yarn that is the subject of this post is the TRUE cursed yarn/sweater(s).
A brief summary of the mishaps that have occurred with this cursed yarn:
Shortly after I started Sweater 1 (Fickle Heart by Justyna Lorkowska, a very well-written pattern), summer 2019: my MIL died while the house we were buying with her was half renovated, and then a pipe exploded, flooding our basement and destroying our hot water heater, and then the septic tank under the garage overflowed, flooding the garage with sewage. In the confusion, the knitting got lost.
Spring 2020: I found the knitting and finished most of the body before I discovred I'd made a small error near the center of the back lace panel which could not be fixed without unraveling about 50% of the body and reknitting.
Spring 2020: I ordered a zipper for the project and it got lost in the mail. I ordered a replacement zipper, which arrived.
Fall 2020: Put the knitting aside when MIL's estate cleared probate and we had to try to finish renovating and moving to a short deadline. We ended up moving all our stuff from one half of the duplex to the other in about two days and in the process lost my favorite sweater, a bunch of MIL's kitchen stuff, the living room door (don't ask) and the (SECOND) zipper for this project.
Fall 2021: I gave up on ever finding the zipper and ordered a THIRD zipper. I blocked the sweater and discovered a moth had eaten a tiny hole in the center of the back lace panel while it was in a drawer waiting for the zipper and it started unraveling right away, meaning it would have had to be at least 70% redone to fix. I tried it on and it was also too tight, while the holes in the lace were too big and let in a bunch of cold air.
Fall 2021: @waxjism frogged the sweater for me (unraveled it) and I chose a different hoodie pattern without any lace (Zingiber by Susanna Winter, also a great pattern) and started Sweater 2. I knitted about half, then succumbed to Pandemic Anxiety/Depression.
November 2022: I redesigned the hood about five times before finding out that I didn't have enough yarn to finish unless I wanted to use the yarn from the pockets and have a sweater without pockets. Frogged the hood.
I tried it on to place the zipper and discovered the zipper wouldn't work anyway because the fit was too tight over the hips. Ordered toggle buttons instead. Used the yarn from the hood to finish the front edge.
Wore it for a few weeks before giving up. The toggles didn't work right, the fit still wasn't right over the hips, and my neck finishing looked dumb.
April 2023: Bought a third patttern (Lenu by Ankestrick), a saddle-shoulder pullover (less yarn than a hoodie, and I had lost some to moths. Also every time you frog a sweater you lose a bit of the yarn). Started Sweater 3. I only knitted a few inches of it before having doubts and weighing the yarn to estimate how much I had left and discovering there wasn't enough to finish it.
November 2024: Weighed the yarn to estimate yardage again and determined there wasn't enough for a sweater with sleeves, so I picked a sweater vest pattern that I liked (Beneath Waves by Johanna Kunin). I was pretty excited because I'd never knitted bobbles before. I finished the sweater last night and wove in all the loose ends BEFORE holding it up and noticing for the FIRST TIME that the back of the armholes looked funny, almost like a racerback. I examined it and realized I had accidentally left out one whole horizontal repeat of the lace pattern on the back. There are four on the front and three on the back. And I had knitted the ENTIRE VEST without noticing!!
As @waxjism said, it will be safer to get the entire sweater out of the house. (Burning would be ideal but wool doesn't burn easily and it probably wouldn't burn up in our woodstove.) Wool does compost, though, so we might do that.
Although I protested that curses are not real, I eventually agreed that even if the curse is actually my subconscious mind sabotaging me it still has devastating effects, and it would be better not to risk it destroying another sweater.
In fact, I have two balls of it leftover, but I'm not sure I dare use them in a stashbusting project in case they ruin it.
The yarn (Svarta Fåret Ulrika in Lila Melange) was purchased originally for its exact color match to a cheap cotton pullover hoodie from H&M (2008ish?) that I loved passionately and wore to pieces, and I really still have my heart set on it being a hoodie anyway. I'll start over with new yarn.

"RIP to a real one (was it real?)" - @waxjism

Traditional Cost Estimating vs. Software-Assisted Cost Estimating Services | What’s the Difference?
In the construction industry, cost estimating is a vital component of project planning and budgeting. For years, professionals relied on traditional methods, such as manual calculations and spreadsheets, to estimate the costs of a project. However, with the rise of advanced technology, software-assisted cost estimating services have become increasingly popular.
Both traditional cost estimating and software-assisted estimating have their advantages, but understanding the differences between them can help construction managers and project owners make informed decisions on the best approach for their specific needs. In this article, we’ll explore the key differences between these two methods and discuss their respective benefits and limitations.
1. Traditional Cost Estimating: The Old-School Approach
Traditional cost estimating typically involves manual calculations and the use of spreadsheets, paper-based records, and historical data. Estimators manually review plans, specifications, and other documentation to identify the quantities of materials, labor, and overhead costs. They then calculate unit costs based on previous project experiences or industry-standard rates.
Key Elements of Traditional Cost Estimating:
Manual Calculations: The estimator reads blueprints, takes measurements, and performs mathematical calculations to determine the quantities of materials and labor.
Reliance on Historical Data: Traditional cost estimators often rely on their experience and historical cost data to make accurate assumptions about project expenses.
Spreadsheets: Many traditional cost estimators use spreadsheets to organize cost estimates and track budget items, which can be time-consuming and prone to human error.
Benefits of Traditional Cost Estimating:
Personal Expertise: Many experienced estimators trust their knowledge and familiarity with specific projects, which can lead to highly tailored cost estimates based on first-hand knowledge.
Flexibility: In some cases, traditional estimating methods may allow more flexibility when dealing with highly customized or one-of-a-kind projects.
Low Initial Cost: Traditional methods require less upfront investment compared to software-assisted estimating tools, making it a more affordable option for small projects or firms with a limited budget.
Limitations of Traditional Cost Estimating:
Time-Consuming: Traditional methods can be slow, especially when dealing with large or complex projects that require numerous calculations and revisions.
Prone to Human Error: Manual calculations are subject to human error, and mistakes in estimations can lead to significant budget overruns.
Limited Scalability: As project size and complexity increase, traditional methods become increasingly difficult to manage, especially when there are multiple stakeholders involved.
2. Software-Assisted Cost Estimating: The Modern Approach
Software-assisted cost estimating services, on the other hand, leverage technology to streamline the estimating process, improve accuracy, and enhance efficiency. These services typically involve using specialized estimating software that automates the calculation of quantities, unit costs, and overall project expenses.
The software integrates various data sources such as historical cost data, material prices, labor rates, and location-based factors, offering a more precise and faster way to generate cost estimates.
Key Elements of Software-Assisted Cost Estimating:
Automation: Software tools automate many aspects of the estimating process, such as calculating material quantities, labor hours, and unit costs, saving time and reducing human error.
Integration with Databases: Cost estimating software can integrate with databases that provide up-to-date information on material prices, labor costs, and other factors affecting project budgets.
Collaboration: Modern estimating software often includes collaborative features, allowing multiple users to access, edit, and update estimates in real time.
Benefits of Software-Assisted Cost Estimating:
Accuracy: One of the biggest advantages of software-assisted estimating is its ability to provide highly accurate estimates by automating calculations and relying on up-to-date data from multiple sources. This reduces the chances of mistakes that are common in manual methods.
Speed: Software tools can significantly speed up the estimating process by automating many tasks, such as material takeoffs and calculations, allowing estimators to generate cost estimates in a fraction of the time it would take manually.
Consistency: Estimating software ensures consistent results across multiple projects. By using the same parameters and data, estimators can ensure that the estimating process is standardized and reliable.
Cost Control: With real-time data integration, software-assisted estimating helps construction managers stay on top of material prices, labor costs, and potential cost overruns. This enables proactive adjustments to the budget as needed.
Scalability: Software-assisted estimating is ideal for large and complex projects, as it can handle vast amounts of data and multiple variables with ease. Estimators can manage larger projects more efficiently and track costs over time.
Limitations of Software-Assisted Cost Estimating:
Initial Investment: Software-assisted estimating requires an initial investment in purchasing and setting up the software, as well as training personnel on its use.
Dependence on Data: The accuracy of the estimates generated by the software depends on the quality and accuracy of the data entered into the system. Outdated or incorrect data can lead to inaccurate estimates.
Learning Curve: There can be a learning curve for users unfamiliar with estimating software, and the system may require time and training to use effectively.
3. Key Differences Between Traditional and Software-Assisted Cost Estimating
FactorTraditional Cost EstimatingSoftware-Assisted Cost EstimatingAccuracyProne to human error and miscalculations.Highly accurate with automated calculations.Time EfficiencyTime-consuming, especially for large projects.Fast, generates estimates quickly.Data IntegrationLimited integration with external data sources. Can integrate with databases and real-time data.FlexibilityMore flexible for unique, custom projects.Standardized processes that ensure consistency.CostLow upfront cost but higher long-term costs due to inefficiency.Higher upfront cost, but greater long-term savings through efficiency.ComplexityDifficult to scale for large, complex projects.Handles large, complex projects efficiently.CollaborationManual collaboration; version control issues.Allows real-time collaboration across teams.
4. Which is Better?
Choosing between traditional cost estimating and software-assisted cost estimating largely depends on the scope, complexity, and budget of the project. For small projects with simple scope and limited resources, traditional cost estimating methods may still be a viable option. However, for large, complex projects with multiple stakeholders, software-assisted cost estimating provides numerous advantages in terms of speed, accuracy, and scalability.
For construction companies looking to improve their estimating processes and reduce the risk of budget overruns, adopting software-assisted estimating is often the best choice. The investment in software tools can be recouped through the efficiency gains and reduction in errors, ultimately leading to more successful project outcomes.
5. Conclusion
Both traditional and software-assisted cost estimating services have their place in the construction industry. Traditional methods may still work well for smaller, simpler projects, but for large-scale, complex projects, software-assisted cost estimating offers enhanced accuracy, speed, and collaboration.
By understanding the differences between these two methods and carefully assessing the specific needs of the project, construction managers can make the best choice for their team and ensure that cost estimating is done efficiently and accurately, keeping projects on track and within budget.

A Beginner's Guide to Fix and Flip Lending for Real Estate Investors
Investing in real estate has long been a proven methodology for personal wealth development, and one of the hottest vehicles recently has been the fix-and-flip strategy. The essence of this strategy is purchasing properties, improving them to create additional value, and repurchasing at a profit. However, financing is one of the most crucial aspects of this strategy. Thus, this blog will be about everything fix-and-flip lending, especially what it is all about and how it can be maximally utilized in Alabama.
What is fix-and-flip lending?
Fix-and-flip lending usually refers to short-term loans for property investors who wish to buy, renovate, and sell houses. Such loans usually amount to the purchase price of the property as well as some part of the renovation costs. Fix and flip loans differ from conventional mortgages in that they are easier and faster to get, and they are designed to suit the investor who wants to conclude projects in a short period of time.
Key Features of Fix and Flip Loans
Short-Term Duration
Fix and flip loans typically have a term of from 6 to 18 months, so that, fittingly, this is the period to which most investors would require renovating and selling their property.
Flexible Loan Amounts
These often lend the amount required by the investor for the purchase price of property and renovation costs. Such systems suffice to make it easier for the investors in concentrating upon adding value to their projects.
Interest Rates
Similar to any other type of loan, fix-and-flip loans have a higher interest payment compared to traditional mortgages. Such is because of the nature of these loans being short-term and riskier.
Quick Approval Process
These loans can be approved and funded in a hurry so that investors can immediately get to act in very competitive real estate markets.
Benefits of Fix and Flip Lending
It would deliver the following features for fix-and-flip lending as a real estate investor.
Funds Accessibility: Even if an investor lacks cash at hand to buy and renovate the entire real estate property, he/she may get the loan from the lender.
Project-specific Funding: The loan is based on a project, covering purchase costs as well as renovation costs.
Market Flexibility: For instance, the opportunity for dynamic housing markets exists, such as in Alabama.
Fix and Flip Lending in Alabama
Real estate in Alabama offered lucrative opportunities for fix-and-flippers who would invest in their affordable price and real demand for renovated homes. Such projects flourished throughout the state. Birmingham, Huntsville, Mobile, and other cities have emerged as continuously moving places with many prospective buyers looking for homes that resemble what they have recently seen.
It takes a good plan before any investor can venture into the Alabama fix and flip lending business. For consideration include the following:
Trends in the Local Market: Understanding specific neighborhoods' property valuation and buyers' preferences is crucial.
Cost of Renovations: Precise estimations go a long way in preventing excess spending.
Loan offers: Working with a lender who understands real estate in Alabama will ease the financing process.
How to Get Started with Fix and Flip Loans
Monitor and Detect Prospective Properties:
Properties that have got an apparently high potential for value addition and alteration but actually are found under serious disfigurements, neglect, and severe repairs are also great resale or wholesale properties.
Consider the Best Lender:
With reputed lenders like Zeus Commercial Capital, borrowing in a sometimes chaotic world turns very smooth and simple. They get real estate investor needs and things naturally offering them special and tailor-made solutions.
Draw Up an Impressive Framework:
And often the biggest and, of course, most impressive models have multi-million-dollar budgets and timelines put down into one place and include, among other things, purchase price, renovation fees, and contingency allowances.
Marketing the Loan:
Forward your loan application with all supporting documents, like the project plan, estimated costs, and property details.
Perform the Renovation:
Bring that reliable contractor on board and keep the renovations within your budget and time schedule.
Sell the property:
When all the renovations are done, put the property up for sale as best as possible.
Conclusion
It allows you to renovate and sell an asset or part of it. Fix-and-flip financing is great for all types of real estate investors who want to have financial flexibility in transforming potential projects into profits. And Alabama's booming real estate market offers some great opportunities for fixing and flipping.
Whether you are an experienced investor or just getting started, understanding the basics of fix and flip lending would be your first step toward success. Working with a knowledgeable lender such as Zeus Commercial Capital will help you navigate this journey and achieve your investment objectives.

wordcount roundup
So around this time each year I take a picture of all of the drafts I wrote in the last year piled up on a kitchen scale and post it here. In previous years, I've had over a pound of drafts. This year I do not have any paper drafts.
This year I have not been doing 24/7 escapism from my life and I feel several types of ways about the writing bug coming back in early November.
However
My actual published wordcount is far from zero although it's pretty hard to count up each word
for work, I helped create about 300 pages for a wiki. Even though I didn't write every single one of them in its entirety, I have edited every single one of them. I'm estimating about 100k words, plus images, that I made.
for my project notebook blog, I made 15 posts about half of which covered the huge renovation that took me the better part of the last two years and which I only just finished up a few days ago. There's still probably 5 more posts in the pipe about that, too. I'm estimating more than 4500 words plus images there.
And I dumped 12,893 words onto ao3. These words were spread across 4 fics.
for a total of around 117500 words, which is actually substantially more words than when I was writing a ton of fiction out by hand.
idk, I feel pretty good about it.
#dilan writes#I've been working on some DEEP cut wips though so maybe someday those will hit ao3.#let's just say that some of these predate my migration to google docs........ and I'm now on a different system
