The buzz around Escape From Tomorrow when it debuted was enormous. Then everyone saw the movie. It’s a fascinating artifact but a mess of a film. An accomplishment but not essential.

Honestly, I suspect that Disney's not going to be anywhere near as aggressive on this as people fear. Their lawyers are fully aware of the Streisand effect and that aggressive hair-splitting a la the Doyle estate is a bad look for the company, especially when it's something that they can only claim ownership of for another handful of years.

The usual line trotted out about how aggressive the Disney lawyers are is to mention suing a daycare over Disney characters on the walls. That was 35 years ago. More recently, you get things like "Escape from Tomorrow", which was basically "Dear Disney: Please Sue Me, I Need The Free Advertising: The Movie". And Disney - which might have even legally had a case there, in my non-lawyer eyes - just left it alone, where it vanished without a trace. (Apparently it just wasn't that good of a movie.)

Honestly, I don't envy anyone who's trying to figure out exactly which elements of Mickey Mouse are and are not in the public domain at the time of this posting. Between poor record keeping, genuinely bizarre publication timing (e.g., Plane Crazy; originally test-screened as a silent cartoon in 1928, re-released with sound in 1929, but for some reason its copyright registration is dated 1930?), and straight up conflicting information (e.g., some of the claims regarding what's in the public domain depend on when one specific promotional poster was distributed, for which different sources give different dates), there's a lot of stuff for which you're basically rolling the dice. It's all going to sort itself out in a year or two, as records are much better from the 1930s onward, but I admire the courage of any author or publisher who's willing to wade into that mess right now.

Spectember/Spectober 2024 #10: Nosey Sea Monkey & Louse Mouse

Okay, let's finish up this year's round of speculative evolution concepts with one last post before we get back to normal paleoart content.

Belial Lyka asked for a "marine proboscis monkey with a somewhat buoyant nose":

A descendant of modern proboscis monkeys, Phusarhinus beliallykae is a large semiaquatic primate found in shallow marshy coastal areas of what was once Southeast Asia. Around 4m long (~13') it has a lifestyle somewhat similar to ancient early sirenians, feeding on soft aquatic plants and hauling out onto land to rest.

Its dense rib bones and long flipper-like grasping forelimbs make it rather front-heavy, allowing it to naturally float with its head and arms hanging down closer to the bottom for energy-efficient foraging. When it needs to resurface to breathe it shunts air from its lungs into its large inflatable nasal sacs, altering its buoyancy enough to tip its head back up towards the surface.

Unlike its ancestors the elaborate nasal structures are found on both males and females – although they're more brightly colored in males and are also used for visual courtship displays and as resonating chambers for loud booming calls.

Sanguichelonamys bunnyi is a highly unusual descendant of a rakali-like semiaquatic rodent that had a symbiotic relationship with early members of the Phusarhinus lineage. The rodents initially just removed algae and external parasites from the bodies of the increasingly bulky aquatic monkeys, but things have recently started to turn more parasitic.

At just 3cm long (~1.2") Sanguichelonamys is one of the smallest mammals to ever exist, with a wide flattened body and sharp hooked claws used to cling onto its host monkey's thick skin. Although it still does remove other parasites, during haul-out periods it will also use its sharp incisors to deliberately enlarge the wounds left behind – or even open up new ones – and directly feed on fresh blood from its host.

The thickened keratinous skin along its head and back has a specialized hydrophobic surface that traps a layer of air while underwater, acting as a "rebreather" bubble similar to that of water anoles. Along with the ability to drastically slow down its metabolism and respiration rate, this allows Sanguichelonamys to survive being submerged during its host's lengthy foraging dives.

something something.... in a similar vein of thought as to how crystal's mind eyes are supposed to represent her "being watched" (it was stated in an interview somewhere), what would the baby doll demon spider represent for edwin?

it took me a good while to figure out but i think it's Societal Pressure and Bullying. which is A Lot Lamer than it sounds but also,, think about it!! (a bit of a long read)

it makes laughing noises. Specifically children's laughter. It is made up of MULTIPLE doll heads and hands. It's like if an angry mob of children was a spider. And let's not forget about its nature -- If Edwin makes the slightest noise or the slightest utterance or makes a move, it chases him. It chases him relentlessly and is always there to eat him alive.

obviously the spider is terrifying in ways that also don't relate to bullying, but still kind of relate to the society around edwin. one of them being that it's made of dolls. they're fake. they're plastic. they're superficial. people tend to be so superficial to keep up appearances and ostracize anyone that doesn't.

it's also a spider. a doll spider. in a dollhouse. edwin is trapped in its web (the dollhouse). but also, he would be trapped in society's social obstacles and mazes for him if he were alive simply because he is Different from them. his true self is not one that society welcomes, accepts, nor tolerates. and they would hunt them down and hurt him any chance they get.

this also makes for some really poetic metaphors about him and his interactions in hell

i think one that's really sweet is when edwin says "I can't escape it... I can't." and charles replies "Yeah well, I'm here now." LIKE OH MY GODDDDDDD LIKE!! like think abt it. think of the implications and how it relates to the metaphor.

charles is there to FREE him from being quiet. he is free to run and to scream and to escape the web that he's in. that's so. they're everything to me.

as for simon,, i cant really say what it WOULD mean like metaphorically... except for the part where simon asks "Do you think it has to be torture? Being the way we are?" and edwin's like "No. It does not. I'm going to get out of here, you should come with me." like edwin KNOWS its not a sin and he's trying to escape the society that rejects them

other than that though, i cant really think what that interaction would mean...

maybe im just wrong about the metaphor, maybe it's Not societal pressure. maybe it's not anything at all! maybe the curtains were just blue, and a giant spider made of doll heads is just a giant spider made of doll heads. who knows?

either way it is 1am where i am right now so if anyone sees this post and has any ideas, feel free to rb/comment, id love to see your take :D

(though: in a similar vein,,, charles died due to hypothermia and internal bleeding. hypothermia or the cold is usually associated with loneliness in most fiction - the way warmth is associated with company - and internal bleeding represents,.. well you can probably guess. leads you to wonder the kind of life charles lived.)
