One Song in Every Language

Okay, tumblr. Let's try something.

I want to make a playlist with one song in every single language. Of course, this is impossible- the spotify playlist limit is something like 5,000- but I want to try. Of course, I can't do this alone, and so I'm sharing the project with the entire online language nerd/ music nerd community. Together we can celebrate linguistic diversity- and find some really cool music :)

Here's how it works. This spreadsheet will document every song and language represented. When you want to add a song, first look in the spreadsheet to see if that language is already represented. If it isn't, add the song to the playlist, and then add it to the spreadsheet.

What counts as a language? This is, as we all know, a fundamentally political question (Russian/ Ukrainian? Hindi/ Urdu? "Chinese" and its "dialects"...) We don't have to solve those debates here. My thinking is: the point is to celebrate linguistic diversity in as many forms as possible. If you can make a reasonable argument for why a song and its linguistic variety should be represented, go ahead and add it.

Yes, this means conlangs count (cause conlangs are SICK!) This also means dead languages count- throw in all the Latin and Classical Nahuatl you like. Glossolalia (à la Sigur Ros) and semi-linguistic scat-esque nonsense (à la Kobaian)? Sure, why not!

I'm calling this one song in every language, but we also want to highlight small and minority languages. So maybe we don't want ten different French songs, but if there are two or three different artists singing in Sami (especially different varieties of Sami), throw it in!

Let's make this awesome. Let's make this huge. Spread it around to every language nerd and music geek you know.

One more Finland related Christmas Calendar hatch!

It’s 8th of December and this day is known here as Jean Sibelius’s birthday and day of Finnish music. In Finland the Finnish flag is usually flown only on special occasions: flag days or private or/and public events. This day is one of those flag days in honor of Jean Sibelius.

This hatch contains very short introduction of Sibelius, links to some of his well-known works and more Finnish music from different artists from about 1930-1960. Old but golden!

I would be glad to hear what you think about finnish music from the olden times (do you have favorite ones) and do you prefer older music to new one or other way around etc! n__n

Jean Sibelius

Jean Sibelius (8.12.1865 - 20.9.1957) was a Finnish composer of the late romantic and early-modern periods. He is known as one of Finland’s greatest composers and it’s said that his music helped Finland to develop national identity. The core of his works is his set of seven symphonies that people continue to perform and record all over the world. Some of his best known works are Finlandia, Karelia Suite, Valse Triste, Violin Concerto, Kullervo and The Swan of Tuonela (Tuonela is finnish word and means the realm of dead, underworld). Sibelius’s works were mostly inspired by Kalevala (Finland’s national epic; like Kullervo and The Swan of Tuonela), nature and Nordic Mythology.

The oldest childhood memory related to music is that I liked to watch accordion playing competitions for some reason on TV. Also the accordion was very fascinating instrument as a child because I liked buses a lot. And back then there were a lot of articulated buses that looked like accordions.

I don’t know anyone with the same age as me who has not grown up with the songs of the legendary finnish band Fröbelin Palikat. During the time I was in day care Fröbelin Palikat was the most badass band there was. I remember singing a lot of their songs during new year’s eve with my friend at their summer cottage and I can also remember rewinding a Fröbelin Palikat VHS tape again and again after watching it.

  3. Lordi - Hard Rock Hallelujah

In 2006 Finland went crazy because we had won in the Eurovision Song Contest in Greece. In the days following this song was playing and being mentioned everywhere. I can still remember one of the kindergarten teachers talking about how the suit lordi had on opened during the show. Also once during a grill party in our garden we played this song with my friend from a CD player and sang to it.
