I Spit On Your Grave, 1978

and another thing about the i spit on your grave tagline. as if miscounting the rapists wasn’t enough i think the claim she blah blah blahed them ‘beyond recognition’ is so very funny. like there isn’t a (beautiful, iconic, stunningly composed) shot of eron tabor’s castrated corpse looking profoundly recognizable. hello?? hello??????
#i am once again saying spit is theeeee most egregious case of the distributors not even remotely bothering to watch the movie#comical levels of false advertising#i spit on your grave#meir zarchi

I've seen "THRILLER: A Cruel Picture" (1973). That was tamer even with the pornographic inserted scenes were unnecessary in that film.
Also Better to find the R-rated version called, "They Call Her One Eye" (1973). Much better film.
But despite being far less sexually graphic, this movie is more intense and uncomfortable. Featuring the longest rape scene depicted on film. 25 minutes.
The writer/director, Meir Zarchi, had found and helped a woman who was raped. He Took to the police, they questioned her aggressively over a few hours. The police disturbingly ignored her injuries and worsening condition to the point that Zarchi then took matters into his own hands and took her to the hospital without assistance of the police.
That experience gave him the inspiration to make this film. Which is in itself is somewhat disturbing.
A British feminist, Julie Bindel, had protested the movie but reversed her opinion after seeing it saying it was a feminist film.
And I didn't see that immediately. Not until Jennifer (the main character) lures the mechanic guy with her to the wilderness and listening to his "reasons" that he and the others couldn't help raping her.
That's when I saw it's not just a movie with gratuitous nudity, violence, and a rape in the middle to facilitate the revenge half of the movie. The revenge is just that, but it's that moment that makes it feminist.
I'll argue for the sake of some people's mental health, it's still flawed, especially for anyone that's disturbed by the plot and the scenes.
⚠️It's definitely not for everyone even if you're a feminist. So I thought it prudent to say that.⚠️
Further Trivia:
1. Camille Keaton is Buster Keaton's great-niece.
2. All four male actors asked to appear naked in the film, to remove awkwardness or embarrassment about their own nudity, and to show solidarity for Camille Keaton who spends much of the film nude.
3. British feminist Julie Bindel actively picketed the film when it was first released in the UK. She later recanted that view, stating that she now considered it "a feminist film".
4. Camille Keaton said in 2019 that she doesn't feel this film or those like it are misogynistic at all, as some have claimed. She said, "The first film was inspired by true events after Meir Zarchi rescued a woman who'd been raped, so I don't think it's exploitative, it's empowering to women. That's what I love about Meir's work, it doesn't glamorise anything and even the grittiness of the cinematography shows the tone of what's happened. Statistics show that in the United States 1 in 5 women have been raped, so the truth is that it's a very real and worldwide issue. Most of us know someone who's been affected. When a movie takes on a subject like this, I think it's very brave." She added that the censorship of this film is a hypocrisy. "We can go on the internet right now and see porn, which children can easily access, but we can't show a portrayal (i.e. it's not really happening) of someone being raped which is a real issue. I believe art can wake people up, especially something that makes a statement."

'I Spit on Your Grave: Deja Vu'- Is it More Tolerable Than What Came Before?
‘I Spit on Your Grave: Deja Vu’- Is it More Tolerable Than What Came Before?
As much as I abhor “I Spit on Your Grave,” its power to shock and deeply unnerve its captive audience is something I have to admire even if I do so begrudgingly. The 1978 cult classic is like a scab which I cannot help but pick at even when I know doing so is harmful and pointless. Meir Zarchi’s controversial revenge flick was such a poorly made motion picture, and yet it maintains a raw power…

I Spit On Your Grave, 1978

‘I Spit on Your Grave’ Remains an Infinitely Repulsive Motion Picture
I should have known better than to sit through this infamous motion picture. Years ago, when I received my first Roger Ebert Home Movie companion as a Christmas present, I read his review in which he described this particular movie as a “vile piece of garbage” and that attending it was one of the most depressing experiences of his life. After I finished reading his review, I felt as though I had…

October 18, 2017 (TRIGGER WARNING sexual abuse and violence will be discussed in the review)
Film: I Spit on Your Grave (1978) Day of the Woman (original title)
Directed By: Meir Zarchi
Featuring: Camille Keaton, Eron Tabor, Richard Pace
This film has been on my IMDB watch list for 2 years now. I put it on there back then I took a drive-in theatre course. So history and context are important when judging this film. shock, horror, gore, and violence were what got people out to see the films. There were hundreds of films made during the 60s and 70s. Low budget and unknown actors were common factors in these films. the films got progressively more violent and shocking as the years went by. According to many sources, this is the worst of the bunch and has the longest rape scene in film history.
A female writer moves to cabin country for the summer. She is sexually assaulted and left for dead by 4 local men. She then avengers herself and hunts and murders them all. I am still reeling from the shock of this film. I ran the gambit of emotions watching this. It was way more graphic than anything I'm used to seeing. I did like that revenge was taken. It was violent. I am glad that the female lead got revenge on her attackers.
edit
No longer in shock. I noticed a few more things I just had to tell you about. The plot is the vehicle to get to the shock parts. That and budget are most likely why it ends just moments after the last murder. Pay attention to the motorboat. Whoever is in the boat has all the power.
