Ernesto Chahoud presents TAITU - Soul-fuelled Stompers from 1960s - 1970s Ethiopia
Ernesto Chahoud’s ‘Taitu’ is a collection of soul-fuelled stompers straight from the dancefloors of 1970s Addis Ababa. A breathless journey through the unique Ethio sound that bands were forging at the time, the 24-track compilation is the result of the Lebanese DJ and crate digger’s decadelong love affair with the ‘golden age’ of Ethiopian music. Among the musical gems featured are 7”s by some of the heavyweights of the scene including the godfather of Ethio jazz Mulatu Astatke and Alemayehu Eshete, the vocalist dubbed the ‘Ethiopian Elvis’, alongside tracks by more obscure artists such as Merawi Yohannis and Birkineh Wurga. For ‘Taitu’, Chahoud has selected 24 of his essential Ethio-Soul 7”s, that never leave his DJ box, and together they capture this opportune moment in Ethiopian music history that saw bands experiment with an armful of influences: gliding through R&B, rock & roll, jazz, funk, soul and boogaloo. What came out was a distinctly Ethiopian interpretation: pentatonic scales, horn-driven melodies and soul-shattering vocals sung in Amharic. The songs are difficult to box in to one genre but they share a simplicity and rawness, added to by their lo-fi quality – with many recordings made in rudimentary studios with only a couple of mics for the entire band. From the R&B stomper ‘Honey Baby’ by Alemayehu Eshete to Astatke’s swaggering ethnic-jazz instrumental ‘Emnete’ and the bluesy melancholic vocals of Hirut Bekele on ‘Ewnetegna Feker’, ‘Taitu’ is a window in on the exciting records being made in Ethiopia in the 1970s.

Ziad Rahbani is Lebanon’s most famous living composer. The son of the legendary singer Fairuz, Rahbani began his career in his early teens. Beirut-born DJ Ernesto Chahoud and French label We Want Sounds have reissued a handful of Rahbani’s enduring albums recently, but this show will mostly concentrate on work by the composer that has yet to be published outside of the Arabic-speaking world. Opening tomorrow @opensourcegallery Image caption: "Ernesto Bautista, New Promises/Nuevas Promesas, 2012, intervention project on trucks crossing the U.S. border Those who left. Those who got lost. Those who arrived. Those who stayed. Those who came back." The Fire Theory presents ICE, an exhibition, residency and collaborative project curated by Omar López-Chahoud at Open Source Gallery. Immigration has been a cornerstone of the identity of the United States since its inception and the “American Dream” has been an often unattainable, yet inspiring dream for millions of immigrants from all over the world. Currently, racism and xenophobia limits the immigration that has made this country great, endangers immigrants and makes the path to citizenship inaccessible. I.C.E is the United States agency that is responsible for the border control, trade, immigration, deportation programs and as its name indicates, it generates a situation of freezing, a stand by between families, friends, on both sides of the border. The Fire Theory is an El Salvador-based art collective formed by Víctor “Crack” Rodríguez, Melissa Guevara, Ernesto Bautista and Mauricio Kabistan. During ICE, Rodríguez will open Open Source Gallery as a workspace, as well as an exhibition space for the group. Guevara, Bautista and Kabistan, whose travel visas for this exhibition were denied, will remain in El Salvador, sending their work digitally to Open Source for exhibition. Over the course of ICE, the group will work together remotely, exchanging ideas, stories and artwork, to explore immigration, both in New York and El Salvador. (at New York, New York)

“Two dollars each if you take the whole lot. Ten dollars each if you want only a few,” says the owner of an old music store in the north-eastern suburbs of Beirut. There are five or six thousand records, not including 45s, which are stored out back in another room.
Just five minutes earlier, Toufic and I had been drinking tea under the shade of a ficus tree, waiting…

Wikipedia - "The music of Ethiopia is extremely diverse, with each of Ethiopia's ethnic groups being associated with unique sounds. distinct modal system that is pentatonic, with characteristically long intervals between some notes. The music of the Ethiopian Highlands uses a fundamental modal system called qenet, of which there are four main modes: tezeta, bati, ambassel, and anchihoy. ... BEHOLD – Snackpoint Charlie’s “Music For Open Ears” Pledge Drive Special, with all the pedge-i-ifying gloriously intact. In fact I wouldn’t normally encourage you to skip over my between-song extemporaneous-izing because seriously WE REALLY DO NEED YOUR HELP, but a distortion-causing technical snag on the spoken portions of the archive file means you are forgiven for skimming, if and only if you go to wgxc.org/donate and become a sustaining supporter. Do it now! (Oh, and “Närrische Zeit” may still be available…. holla!)
