i don’t post a ton about my life here but i do music writing occasionally and have started doing it again after years and years. anyway, here is the most recent one on Beauty Pill’s Blue Period reissue, written for Post-Trash. if you’re unfamiliar and read the review, i hope you’ll check out the record!
http://post-trash.com/news/2023/5/11/beauty-pill-blue-period-album-review
https://beautypill.bandcamp.com/album/blue-period
an excerpt if you’d like one:
While the subject matter is weighty, the band’s consistent tunefulness permeates even the darkest sentiments. Take “Prison Song,” which features Rachel Burke’s voice, the musical keystone of the record, over simple acoustic strumming and the musings of lovers estranged by incarceration and a love that’s curdled into obligation, or “Such Large Portions!,” which has some of the most indelible guitar playing on the record in the form of the lush, whammy barred chorus riff, pure kinetic energy before all tension releases and Burke’s voice comes out from the black. When she sings “The food is poison here, you can’t eat it / but in such large portions!” the sentiment is somehow even more biting when paired with the sweetness of her voice.

Savak- Flavors Of Paradise (Ernest Jenning Record Co.)
The last Savak record, 2022’s Human Error/Human Delight was a nice jagged pop record that not enough folks heard. I sure hope more folks hear Flavors of Paradise as this NYC band has made a huge step forward (and it would be a darn shame if more folks didn’t hear it). The trio, vocalist/guitarist Sohrab Habibion, other vocalist/guitarist Michael Jaworski (both he and Sohrab also play bass, keyboards, etc.) and drummer Matt Schulz are a tight unit, a well-oiled machine at this point.
RE: the huge step forward comment, how so you ask? The hooks are bigger, the songs are more crisp (did I just say “crisp?” why yes I did) and the playing and songwriting have tightened up all the way around.
The first cut, “Up with the Sun’ is among the band’s best (if not their best). They (effortlessly) toss off more gems like the mid-tempo “Let the Sunlight In” and the darker “The New New Age.” They tuck two more gems near the end in the breezy/hooky “What is it Worth” and “Will Get Fooled Again “ (see what they did there?).
The name and the band themselves are so low-key they’re easy to miss but do not miss Flavors of Paradise. Just don’t.

+/- (Plus/Minus) "All the Light Left Behind" (2021)
+/- (Plus/Minus) “All the Light Left Behind” (2021)
Ernest Jenning Record Co.Buy: Bandcamp +/- (Plus/Minus) are a great indie rock/pop or “indietronic” (thanks Wikipedia) band that I’ve actually got some discs from on my shelf behind me. I grew up a big Versus fan, and Plus/Minus is the project of James Baluyut, who had played guitar in that wonderful band. When Versus took a long hiatus, James continued on with Plus/Minus, along with Versus’…

Savak - Flavors Of Paradise LP (Peculiar Works, Ernest Jenning Record Co.)
Savak’s sixth album, Flavors Of Paradise, is a vibrant burst of energy, ideas, and musicianship that never ceases to amaze. Over the course of five LPs, an EP, and various other releases, this Brooklyn-based post-punk outfit has steadily built a reputation for weaving together the sinewy intricacies of post-hardcore with the infectious charm of 60s power pop and the jagged edge of 80s indie rock.…

Exclusive: WATCH 'My Book On Siblings' - The new video from SAVAK
Exclusive: WATCH ‘My Book On Siblings’ – The new video from SAVAK
Words: Andy Hughes Ever have that feeling a fad completely passed you by? (I mean, not these days – I’m 30+ so everything passes me by now…) There was a host of fads in school that went right over my head. Never had a Tamagotchi. Never collected Pokémon cards. Never had a light up yo-yo. Watching the latest video from Brooklyn, New York lot SAVAK has got me hankering for a go on that last one,…

Savak (Brooklyn, New York) are a supergroup of sorts. They are made up of members of The Obits, Holy Fuck, and Nation of Ulysses. I would say their sound is pretty hard to pin down. But, I’ve enjoyed nearly every song on this - be sure to listen to “Keys to the City”. Look at this list of “sounds like” that I’ve compiled: The New Pornographers, Mission of Burma, The Byrds, R.E.M., and Thin White Rope.
This record is being released by Ernest Jennings Record Co. Their previous release was put out by Comedy Minus One.

New Video: Miranda and the Beat Share a Feral, New Ripper
New Video: Miranda and the Beat Share a Feral, New Ripper @ejrc @ClarionCallPR @imtherealcb @nickzinner
New York-based garage punks Miranda and the Beat — currently founding duo Miranda Zipse (vocals, guitar) and Kim Sollecito (drums) with Dylan Fernandez (Farfisa) and Alvin Jackson (bass) — can trace their origins back to a small California town, where the band’s founding duo met. Zipse, a high school dropout, had been working for her mom’s estate sale business going through dead people’s…

Is this really our first post mentioning Savak (Brooklyn, New York)? I find that hard to believe. Savak contains members of The Obits, Holy Fuck and The Cops. In all honesty, I don’t know any of those bands, but I do like Savak.
Apparently members have played in Ted Leo & the Pharmacists. AllMusic compares them to The Gotobeds. I feel like early 1980s West Coast comparisons are more in line: True West and The Dream Syndicate.
This is being released by Ernest Jenning Record Co (also out of Brooklyn).
