I spoke to the Old Man a couple of times, but I’m sure He didn’t hear a word I said. He had quit listening to man a million years ago. Now all He does is play chess by Himself or sit around playing solitary with old cards. ― Ernest J. Gaines, Of Love and Dust

When you’re a writer, you spend thousands of hours alone with whatever you choose to use for your stories: notebook and pencil, typewriter and ribbon of ink (old school!) or laptop and keyboard. Voices and landscapes and memories fill the pages, while the writer lives inside an imaginary world, seeing what no one else is seeing at that moment, trying to make sure readers see the people and places we’re creating.
But then your book of stories or poems, or your novel or memoir, is published, and you enter the world of readers, the people who matter most. I always tell my students and readers, around the world, that writers sometimes lead secretive, private lives, wherein they hide their work in a drawer in an attic, like Emily Dickinson, or never send that computer file to anyone. But most of us write because we want people to see our worlds, hear our voices and those of our characters – as Ernest J. Gaines, one of my favorite writers said, “I wrote because I didn’t see my people on the shelves at the library.” That quote kept me going for four years while I wrote my last book, a memoir about six generations of women who found their dreams in Southern California, and one of the first people I saw in the audience of the book launch, in Riverside, was CelenaDiana Bumpus, whose radiant brown eyes and perfect spiral curls and big smile greeted me, as she always did, when we talked about writing and mothers.
Author Susan Straight, a Riverside native, has a new memoir, “In the Country of Women.” (Courtesy of Felisha Carrasco)
Ms. Bumpus was my dream person to run into at Ralph’s every week, where she would be shopping for her beloved mother, with whom she lived until both passed away in February, in Riverside. I would be shopping for my beloved father, and we’d stand in the aisles – in 2019 and early 2020, before the coronavirus pandemic – and chat for a long time about how we handled life, caring for family and writing in the time we had. Ms. Bumpus came to every event I did in Riverside, and we talked about poetry, voice, form, and always, always, about how we loved to pass on craft and imagination to people who wanted to write.
Some writers lead solitary lives because that feeds their souls. Some writers, like Ms. Bumpus and like me, love to teach, love to tell stories to new readers and students, and love to hear other people’s tales.
CelenaDiana Bumpus taught hundreds of people in Southern California how to love their own words and images and stories. She was a participant in Inlandia’s workshops for many years, at the Riverside Public Library. For the last 10 years, CelenaDiana led an Inlandia workshop, Poets in Motion, through the Janet Goeske Senior Center. She was a member of Inlandia’s Black Voices Steering Committee. A survivor of metastatic breast cancer, she heard her students voices.
Mary-Lynne Monroe remembers, “Finding CelenaDiana’s online class was a magnificent stroke of luck. My participation began after completing cancer treatments last June. CelenaDiana spoke candidly of our shared journey. Her support was palpable. Her caring open invitation to simply be there kept me returning. She fashioned her Zoom classes as a welcoming place for everyone, so much so that our group included people from across the US and the UK. Her laughter was infectious and her critiques of participants’ work were always upbeat.”
CelenaDiana was also the author of the poetry collection, “Confessions” (1998, The Inevitable Press), with work included in “Street Lit: Representing the Urban Landscape” (2014, Scarecrow Press), “Verse/Chorus: A Call and Response Anthology” (2013, Scarecrow Press), “San Bernardino, Singing” (2020, Inlandia Books), “Orangelandia: The Literature of California Citrus” (2014, Inlandia Books), and multiple issues of the Writing from Inlandia anthologies.
Another former student, Constance Jameson, recalls, “Her attributes of caring, kindness and patience were especially important in helping the older individuals in the writing groups held at the Goeske Center. I learned much about writing and poetry in Celena’s workshops — from her writing prompts, information presented, and sharing done by our many interesting, talented class members.”
Writers love the perfect phrase, and I can’t think of a better way to pay tribute to a beloved reader and writer like CelenaDiana than this, from author Gayle Brandeis: “On January 21, less than a month before her death, CelenaDiana posted her final tweet: You either die a simile or live long enough to become a metaphor. CelenaDiana was and will remain a beautiful metaphor.”

At 2 p.m. on April 11, Inlandia will be hosting a virtual remembrance of CelenaDiana. To RSVP, please visit: tinyurl.com/RememberingCelenaDiana.
When I finish my next book, and I read in an auditorium somewhere in Riverside, I will look out into the crowd and miss seeing the brilliant smile and mobile face of CelenaDiana Bumpus, lover of words, the kind of reader we dream about. But every few days, when I’m in Ralph’s buying groceries for my family and my parents, I will think of her, finding joy and stories amid the shelves with me.
Susan Straight’s memoir, “In the Country of Women”, was a national bestseller. Her new novel, “Mecca”, will be published in March 2022.

The History of a Drink
“After the first glass of absinthe you see things as you wish they were. After the second you see them as they are not. Finally you see things as they really are, and that is the most horrible thing in the world.“
Oscar Wilde
According to A Dictionary of Food and Nutrition, absinthe is a “herb liqueur flavoured with wormwood”. However, this emerald green spirit is not usually known for its ingredients. It is infamous for its bad reputation, misunderstanding, controversiality that have been weighing its name down for centuries.
History
Throughout the years, wormwood had become a frequent component of different medicine, mostly for its anti-inflammatory compounds (Indigo Herbs, 2018). However, the first person to use the herb for the making of an alcoholic drink was a Swiss man - Dr. Ordinaire (Absinthe101, 2017). During the French revolution time, he developed a recipe for something that we now call absinthe. In his deathbed, he gave the secret away to his sisters, who later on sold it to Henri-Louis Pernod. After that, Pernod was able to successfully open distilleries in Switzerland and France, gaining popularity for the green elixir and quickly becoming one of the most influential names in the absinthe franchise, even to this day. Back then, absinthe was not consumed only for leisure purposes. Doctors treated French soldiers’ malaria with the green spirit. However, because of massive shortage of wine, by 1910, absinthe quickly grew into the drink of choice for artists, writers, intellectuals (Cranmer, 2019).
L’heure verte (“Green hour”) soon became a part of every bohemian’s evening. Everyday, at 5PM, they had what we now call “The happy hour” where the green fairy flowed freely, intoxicating many. The French absolutely loved absinthe, which lead to other countries picking it up as well. Spain, Czech Republic quickly became hot-spots of the drink. The spirit that started off as a medicine to treat illnesses was now motivated by experiential, utilitarian factors (Charters 2006). People drank it to intoxicate themselves (as wine was not as widely available). Absinthe was also enjoyed as an experience – the ritual attracted many individuals.
Cros, C. (n.d.). L'heure verte
Absinthe was a major muse to many writers, artists and is up to now considered the drink of literature (Ciabattari, 2014). Oscar Wilde, Vincent Van Gogh, Ernest Hemingway all regularly indulged in the drink, believing that it affected their creativity, helping them create their masterpieces, which made them famous (Hopkins, 2014).
What happened?
After years of heavy drinking, different issues started coming up. More and more people were sick with deadly illnesses, such as epilepsy, tuberculosis. Since the drink of choice at that time was absinthe, everyone started putting the blame on the components of the spirit, not the amount of it consumed. In 1905, a tragic event took place, which resulted in absinthe being banned in most countries (Swigonski, 2013). A heavily intoxicated man killed his wife and two daughters and according to him, the Green Fairy was the one to hold accountable. The murderer was explaining about the hallucinations that made him commit the crime and from then on, everyone started to believe that absinthe causes hallucinations. However, it does not. Thujone – a chemical component of some plants and herbs that are used in the recipe of absinthe was rumoured to bring people vivid dreams and make them see things, that were not real. Briefly, the dose of thujone in the spirit is simply not enough to attract hallucinations. On the other hand, the high content of alcohol absinthe has can easily lead people to a high level of intoxication (Marcelis, 2017).
Absinthe today
Since 2007, absinthe remains legal worldwide (Absinthe 101). Now, absinthe is not widely consumed among the population. It is mostly served in bars, that specialise in absinthe. A great example of those is a bar/museum “The Last Tuesday Society” based in London. There everyone can choose from a wide variety of absinthes to try. They also organise absinthe tastings, where a specialist introduces the visitors to the history of the spirit and lets them taste all different types of the drink. As well as that, they have the “L’heure verte”, which through out the years was moved onto a later time – 6PM (The Last Tuesday Society, 2019).

The absinthe ritual
Perhaps the most mysterious, fascinating part of drinking absinthe is what is called the absinthe ritual. From historical evidence, it is known that every person, who drank absinthe, enjoyed it with an absinthe ritual - no matter of their social class, income, age or gender (Absinthes, 2019). This activity is still commonly practised in absinthe bars today. So what is the absinthe ritual?
Firstly, a fountain with ice cold water is vital for the ritual. If not mixed into cocktails, absinthe is usually drunk with cold water. Secondly, a special absinthe spoon has to be balanced on the glass, with a sugar cube on top. The purpose of the water fountain is to slowly let the ice water drip into absinthe. This part cannot be performed quickly or sped up, because all the essential oils, ingredients need a chance to let out their aromas. As the water drips onto the sugar, it starts to collapse, falling into the green spirit, because of the holes in the absinthe spoon. When all sugar is dissolved, the drinker may stop the water fountain and enjoy their drink.
The ritual is what attracts most people to try absinthe. It is very aesthetic, fun and different. Although, some people consider the ritual to be the only joy of drinking absinthe, the drink itself is very unique and worth trying (Sangvhi, 2010).
My experience with absinthe
If I had to choose my poison of choice, without a doubt, I would pick absinthe. I first tried absinthe about a year ago. I did it, because I am a fan of trying new, infamous foods and drinks, putting myself into discomfort zones. Previously, I had heard that absinthe causes hallucinations, that it is so strong that one drink will knock a person out. I wanted to clarify these opinions myself and I was pleasantly surprised to know that none of the things I had known about absinthe before were true. I enjoy the drink, because of its taste. Mixing it with water and sugar, it sounds as a very strange, yet simple combination, but the taste is so unique. It gives you different sensations too. Compared with other alcohol, which burns your throat, absinthe softly pinches your tongue, numbing it. As well as that, the absinthe ritual is glamorous. I love sitting next to a large absinthe fountain, watching the cold water slowly drip into absinthe, changing its colour into pale green. It takes me a few centuries back, making me feel that I am sitting amongst a group of bohemians, discussing the books we have recently read, diving deeper into the poetry books by famous writers.

LGBT Therapy
LGBT Pride Month, observed in June, is celebrated around the U.S. with parades and activism events. At the same time, many people do not know Pride Month’s origin, which honors the 1969 Stonewall riots — a demonstration which blazed the trail for activists across the country.
In 1970, the first Gay Pride marches took place in New York, Los Angeles and San Francisco. There has been a lot of progress since then, but LGBT advocates are still working toward a future without discrimination in the workplace and beyond.
Here are some powerful quotes from changemakers who are have contributed to the movement for LGBT equality:
“The only queer people are those who don’t love anybody.” — Rita Mae Brown
“This world would be a whole lot better if we just made an effort to be less horrible to one another.” — Ellen Page
“Why is it that, as a culture, we are more comfortable seeing two men holding guns than holding hands?” — Author Ernest J. Gaines

Character Asks - Peyton Sawyer, Buffy Summers, Jess Mariano, and Effy Stonem
Peyton:Why I like them: she cares DEEPLY about her friends and loved ones, she recognizes her mistakes, takes responsibility for her actions, she doesn’t take shit from anybody and is quite the sass queen tbh, Why I don’t: eh i don’t really /not/ like her but her attitude in season 5 was kind of rough sometimes (not that i didn’t understand it, but it was just the constant girl vs girl drama that pissed me off) Favorite episode (scene if movie): ugh idk man there are quite a lot but my absolute fave is probably 3x13Favorite season/movie: season 6Favorite line: This is who I am. This how I am. And 95% of the time there isn’t a moral, or a victory, or a silver lining. Take it or leave it. If you leave it then you’ll miss that other 5%.Favorite outfit: everything tbh but i’m still really in love with the vegas dress in 6x01OTP: leytonBrotp: paley, adult breytonHead Canon: peyton is bisexual Unpopular opinion: peyton associating with lucas didn’t bring out the worst in her, only in someone else lmaoA wish: seeing more of married!leyton and sawyer :/ bitterAn oh-god-please-dont-ever-happen: married j*yton *michael scott voice*god pLs No GoD5 words to best describe them: iconic, empathetic, the best, beautiful, better than you My nickname for them: p. sawyer
Buffy:Why I like them: she’s badass and doesn’t care about like the popular labels at school like when cordelia was all over her but she chose to sit with the “less popular” girl willow she gained instant sympathy points from meWhy I don’t: i never disliked her only when she said ily to sp*ke in 7x22 ops Favorite episode (scene if movie): my memory of btvs is so bad sorryyyyFavorite season/movie: if i recall correctly season 1 and season 5 Favorite line: “i’m buffy the vampire slayer and who are you” “she irons her jeans, she’s evil!” “if the apocalypse comes, beep me!” “the hardest thing in this world is to live in it. be brave. live. for me” and so many more she literally has the most iconic quotes Favorite outfit: tbh that one dress she wore in the season 1 finale i think ? i can’t remember and when she wore angels black leather jacket dfhsjhOTP: bangelBrotp: scoobie gangHead Canon: don’t really have one Unpopular opinion: deserves better friends than w*illow/x*ander A wish: i’m quite happy with how the show ended tbh the romantic sp*ffy could have been left out thoAn oh-god-please-dont-ever-happen: sp*ffy endgame ew fuck the comics tbh5 words to best describe them: iconic * 5 My nickname for them: idk buff ? lol
Jess:Why I like them: first of all…. he’s good looking lmao (i’m not superficial i promise) but i guess the kind of bad boy vibe was attractive when i first watched the show (compared to the bland and boring vibe dean was giving out) anyways i liked that he was into books and stuff which is kind of unusual for boys at least in the show lol idk man i just loved him okay he deserved betterWhy I don’t: i guess he was kind of impulsive sometimes, like he couldn’t control his emotions (when he put rory in a choose me or the other thing kind of situation or when he sexually assaulted her at that party) not cool :/
Favorite episode (scene if movie): like i said…….my memory isn’t that good of gg either lmaoFavorite season/movie: i don’t know…….sorryFavorite line: “you know what i mean. this isn’t you. i know you. i know you better than anyone”, “you know ernest has only lovely things to say about you”Favorite outfit: umm none of his outfits really stood out for me lmaoOTP: literatiBrotp: luke/jessHead Canon: don’t have oneUnpopular opinion: jess is still better than that blonde dick from yaleA wish: erasing the rebootAn oh-god-please-dont-ever-happen: a season 2 of the reboot5 words to best describe them: broody, handsome, impulsive, caring and sassyMy nickname for them: -
Effy: Why I like them: i really don’t have an explanation for liking her i just do. like when i started watching this show i was like 15 or something? i don’t know i was just blinded by her recklessness and not giving a fuck about the world. i wanted to be as carefree as her, also i knew her face from tumblr already and idk Why I don’t: she’s kind of hard to read sometimes? like idk she says she’s in love with guy a but then she kisses guy b in front of him and the way she said to jj “blabla everybody loves me” like yikes. she was hurting people’s feelings a lot like not cool manFavorite episode (scene if movie): 4x07 as heartbreaking as it is this whole show is fucking depressing tbhFavorite season/movie: season ¼Favorite line: Sometimes I think I was born backwards, you know came out my mum the wrong way. I hear words go past me backwards. The people I should love I hate, and the people I hate…..Favorite outfit: her outfits were cool tbh but i don’t remember any of them lmaoOTP: freffyBrotp: i don’t have a THATS MY BROTP SHIP but i liked her with pandora and katie and emilyHead Canon: she’s still together with freddie lolUnpopular opinion: c*ffy is fucking trashA wish: for her to get out of prison and reunite with freddie (yes im bitter)An oh-god-please-dont-ever-happen: idk 5 words to best describe them: broken, complex, detached, beautiful, recklessMy nickname for them: eff

Let me pass, Marcus, Pauline was saying. I’m telling you, now. What he got on you? Marcus said. What’s the matter with you, woman? I’m telling you, let me pass, Pauline said. What’s the matter with you? he said. I been working up there all night like a slave, like a dog—and all on ’count of him. What’s the matter with you? I’m telling you, she said. Let me pass. He moved closer. Don’t you put your hands on me, she said. I mean it, don’t you put your hands on me, you killer. He hit her and knocked her down. She got up. If I tell him, he’ll kill you for this. He’ll kill you. You white man bitch, he said. He hit her again. She fell again. Leave that woman ’lone, boy, Pa Bully hollered at him. Mr. Grant, Aunt Ca’line said, warningly. You hear me out there, boy? Pa Bully called. Pauline was up again. You bitch, Marcus said to her. You bloody whore. She was running toward the gate now. You whore, he called to her. She was running in the yard now. She ran in the house and locked the door. He stood there a while looking at the house; then he went on. ― Ernest J. Gaines, Of Love and Dust

It was the kind of "here" your mother or your big sister or your great-aunt or your grandmother would have said. It was the kind of "here" that let you know this was hard-earned money but, also, that you needed it more than she did, and the kind of "here" that said she wished you had it and didn't have to borrow it from her, but since you did not have it, and she did, then "here" it was, with a kind of love. It was the kind of "here" that asked the question, When will all this end? When will a man not have to struggle to have money to get what he needs "here"? When will a man be able to live without having to kill another man "here"? ― Ernest J. Gaines, A Lesson Before Dying
