Rosa Passos tells of her love for Braslia, and much of her career
(photo: Marcelo Castello Branco / Divulgao)
The stage of Rosa Passos the world. Acclaimed from Tokyo to New York. But Brasilia who loves and lives with her family. From Salvador, the singer and songwriter came to the newlywed capital and, at the end of the 1980s, gained fame and praise for the rare voice and unique musical talent. Always accompanied by first-rate musicians, such as bassist Jorge Helder and guitarist Lula Galvo, she played in the bars of Asa Norte, like the extinct Degraus. “Singing for people to dance was the biggest school of my life. I grew up a lot as an interpreter singing at night ”, he remembers. In this series interview Candangas conversations, Rosa declares herself to Braslia, talks about the trajectory and the meetings with the bossa nova master Joo Gilberto.
When you hear the expression “Brasilia, capital of hope”, what emotional memory comes to your mind? You are the most brasilian Bahian in the capital …
“Brasilia, capital of hope” is very special to me. I came to Braslia married, young and started to make my life here. My public servant husband, I didn't know anyone musically, it took a while to form a group of friends with musical affinities. I had my children, and now my grandchildren. I was creating friendships, bonds of affection with the city. I'm a Brasilian-Bahian, really, with a heart.
And the music? How did the guitar begin to be part of your life? Which artists influenced you?
I studied piano before the guitar, but when my older sister took a double compact disc by Joo Gilberto, which was the film's soundtrack Carnival Orpheus, I heard that guitar, that voice, the sound division that I was impacted that, at that moment, I arrived at my father, still young, at the age of 11, and I said to him: “Painho, I don't want to play the piano anymore, I want the guitar . Joo Gilberto's influence has always been great in my life. my deception, my master. I learned from Joozinho and I owe him a lot, in the form of singing, saying, breathing. As a composer, I admire Tom Jobim, Ary Barroso, Joo Bosco, Djavan, Gilberto Gil and Edu Lobo, who are very important.
In the 1980s, Braslia had a busy night and first-rate musicians occupied the stage. Which spaces were preferred and would you highlight which musicians of that time?
I had small children, I did not live much then. I started singing at night in 1984, performing at the Amigos bar (105 North), with Helder da Silva Miranda, who is an engineer and guitarist. Then I went to the stage of Degraus, which even had a dance floor. I met Lula Galvo, Jorge Helder, Erivelton Silva and other musicians. Singing for people to dance was the biggest school of my life. I grew up a lot as an interpreter singing in the night.
The brasiliense became aware of a certain Rosa Passos, in the first half of the 1980s, when he took the stage, at the invitation of the pianist Antnio Adolfo (who came to release the LP Homemade), in the Sesc auditorium, at 913 Sul. When and how was this historic moment and what did you interpret that night?
It was beautiful! We are great friends. Antnio Adolfo is a person that I respect a lot and it was a surprise when he invited me. I was pregnant with Juliana.
You gained stage skills by serving in the bar and restaurant Amigos, at 105 Norte. What memories do you have of that time?
Amigos had a more intimate atmosphere, he played seated. But at Degraus, I was standing with the band. I had to have a performance on stage, people were dancing on the floor. I got a really good bed. It was music from 9 pm to 3 am. Wonderful! It was a study. It was very boring with repertoire, I wanted everything to a high level. People applauded like it was a show!
What has changed in relation to the present day? Do people no longer like to hear good music or are they simply not presented with quality music?
I think the Brazilian musical context is very varied and follows the trend. For the mainstream media (record companies, TVs and the like), the important thing is not the quality, but the commercial return.
How to train consumers when houses are being closed due to excesses of the Silence Law? Is Braslia a dormitory city today?
sad. There is a lot of good music in Braslia. Singers and singers who are out of space. I travel a lot, I'm not much in the city, but I notice the lack of space they have to show their work.
You are recognized worldwide, from New York to Tokyo. But there are love and musical reasons in the capital of the country. What do you like here?
I like the tranquility. My children and grandchildren were born here. I have a peaceful life. As I am an artist who travels a lot in Europe and the United States, Braslia is my beloved city.
How was it playing at Carnegie Hall? Place where bossa nova was released to the world with Joo Gilberto, Tom Jobim, Oscar Castro Neves, Roberto Menescal, Luiz Bonf and so many other stars …
It was one of the most important moments of my career. It was an invitation from Carnegie Hall, I went on stage alone with my guitar. This had been predicted by my father when I was 17 years old. He said, “If you continue like this, you will arrive at Carnegie Hall”. I was surprised by the phrase of painho. It was the most important moment of my life. I played, releasing my solo album, Rosa (2006), but I also sang with (the cellist) Yo Yo Ma, in the release of Thanks, Brazil, his record that I participated in – we won the American Grammy -, and then I also sang with Paquito D’Rivera, in the show 50 years of Paquito Music. It was three times that I performed at Carnegie Hall.
And your meeting with Joo Gilberto (he received rare people) in the apartment where he lived in Leblon? There is so much musical harmony with the father of bossa nova, that the journalist Ruy Castro calls you “Joo Gilberto in skirts”. How was that friendship?
The meeting with Joozinho was very magical. He did not receive anyone at the Rio Flat apartment, in Leblon (Rio de Janeiro). I had three dates, I took my guitar, we spent hours playing, it was fantastic. This “Joo Gilberto de saias” thing (laughs), a big responsibility, but I started doing other things, besides bossa nova. I don't do bossa nova, I do quality Brazilian music. The music I make also has a jazzy connotation, without losing the swing, the Brazilianness. That's why I have a solid international career. In Brazil, I have many fans too.
Jorge Helder and Lula Galvo are two musicians who started their careers here in the city, they are by your side in almost all projects. How important are they to the work you do?
Very large. We created a great bond of friendship. We grew up together musically. I am the godmother of Jorge Helder's daughter. We have a very great attunement. We are family, especially with the situation we are experiencing.
A curiosity: Ivete Sangalo who sang her songs at the beginning of her career, at the Canoa bar, in Rio Vermelho, in Salvador, after famously took her up in an electric trio, in a Micarecandanga here in the capital. What memory do you have of that experience?
This memory with Ivete was very funny. Very cool! I was at home, still living at 308, when she called and invited me to join the electric trio (laughs). My God! I ended up going with my three kids. I joined the electric trio and I had never had an experience like that. She has a lot of energy and outside, the person has to sing, dance and bring that crowd to sing along and accompany. very interesting. Ivete is amazing! Immense singer.
You are taking advantage of this pandemic period to make popular lives on social networks, a gift for fans. After that, what are your projects?
Even before this pandemic, I made videos for my fans. I have over 100 videos in those five years. I always like to make videos. The visibility of my work has grown a lot. The fans grew a lot. Nowadays, it is also a way to collaborate with people, at that moment so difficult. Everything is gonna be okay. Soon, we will be together soon. The concert schedule will be set up right after the quarantine.
