I know this is nothing new but i wanted to point out again how much sense these two very opposite statements make. Erik knows that the kiss must be one of the big factors of whatever is wrong between him and Mathias. Ever since it happened they haven’t talked at all and all attempts from Erik got ignored or cut short with interruptions.

So he knows he needs to bring the topic up.

At first Erik wants to talk about what happened and says “it was nice”. Because it was. He is sorting it into positive memories. He doesn’t have a problem with the kiss. He didn’t feel bad during it. He was just surprised. I don’t think he’s at the point of wanting another one yet, because he hasn’t sorted his feelings, but that kiss happened and it’s fine with him.

The second one is Erik‘s attempt to just delete the kiss from their friendship. Not necessarily because he needs it to be deleted but he thinks that’s what Mathias needs. Erik only knows that Mathias ignored all his messages, didn’t initiate any conversation about it and then the ugly scene with Felix happened, which ties the kiss to something bad.

So after the first positive try (which was cut short), Erik goes another route. And why shouldn’t he? Even tho Felix was the reason they didn’t finish their first conversation, Mathias did not reach out on his own to finish it but seemingly kept avoiding Erik. So Mathias did not take that positive branch that Erik offered.

We do know that the second one was the worst thing Erik could’ve said. We did see Mathias heart break and maybe they could be at a completely different point right now if Erik repeated his first positive thoughts but it‘s miscommunication, it‘s teenagers, it‘s a slow burn and the first few eps are doing a pretty good job at delivering all that.

Ok so I get that Erik probably wanted friends over the summer and decided to hang out with Felix but summer is over and Mathias is back so you can stop now Erik!!

Honestly I think Erik's behavior makes a lot of sense. Erik had a really tough time adjusting to life on the island. He essentially only had two real friends, Mathias and Sara. Erik probably didn't want to be friends with Felix at first, but then they were stuck together the whole summer because they had the same job. And since Sara moved and Mathias spent the whole summer ghosting him, he didn't really have anyone else to turn to. He's probably still a little scared of Felix, but he's stuck with him for two months and he doesn't have any other friends. So of course he tries to be friends with Felix. What other option does he have?

Felix said a lot of awful shit in ep 2, but remember Mathias has been avoiding him* all summer. Last time Erik tried to help someone (the girl in Bergen) he got beat up and had to move. And the last time Felix and gang beat him up, Mathias kind of let them (I know there's more nuance to this, but trauma doesn't always care about nuance).

I'm not excusing what Erik did (or didn't do) or saying that he should be friends with Felix, but I do understand why he's behaving the way he is.

*Edit: because I'm now rereading what I wrote and I just want to clarify, I mean that Mathias has been avoiding Erik all summer so that's why Erik didn't stand up to Felix, not that Felix said what he said because Mathias had been avoiding Felix.

Ohhh my god I physically recoiled when Erik tried to kiss Thea. What happened to my boy 😭😭😭 He used to just let things happen to him but now he's actively initiating, which would've been good development if he wasn't initating unwanted advances on every girl at the party (as he says). Like the change in his character could be attributed to him having a friend group now and not being bullied, but when we look at his past where had equally shitty friends, he stood up against them. Where tf is that attitude now???

Like yeah he obviously has this weird obsession with Mathias and has since season one. Always been super jealous and possessive (but only when it comes to Erik and never Sara don’t think I didn’t clock that) and yeah while I don’t want him to be secretly in love with Mathias it’s kinda the thing that makes the most sense to me?

Like internalized homophobia, in love with your best friend, and while he’s dating girls it’s fine because guys are never even an option so of course he doesn’t like you but then he starts to show interest in a guy that isn’t you and you just? Lose it?

Idk it kinda makes sense to me.

Also Felix only being homophobic toward Mathias when he was standing there long enough to hear Erik say that he thought the kiss was nice is.. interesting.

Idk though. He sucks but I wanna study him under a microscope and then throw him in the trash.

This is my headcanon for Erik’s character and kind of how I could potentially see things going based on the story so far:

- He is on the asexual spectrum and will only sleep with Olivia out of curiosity and pressure from the bet, not necessarily attraction or desire. This is a guess for now but he hasn’t expressed any interest in anyone in that way thus far and seems kind of… ambivalent? about it? maybe?

- He does have romantic feelings for Mathias but they are buried really deeply at the moment and all jumbled up in there with his deep affection for Mathias as a friend, so I think he will take a long time to recognize that they are in fact romantic feelings (unfortunately for Mathias’ heart 😭).

I’m curious to see what others here think. It makes perfect sense to me as someone who was really confused about the appeal of sex as a teenager and realized that I am in fact ace-spec. And I kind of see some of that in Erik’s character but maybe I’m just projecting onto him. 😅 Ace representation is not that common or diverse in media even nowadays so it might just be wishful thinking on my part.

At the same time, friends to lovers is my favorite trope and in my opinion is the deepest, truest form of romance between two characters, so I’m loving this story. I’ve always been kind of a hopeless romantic and I really want Erik/Mathias to happen, but I think they both have different journeys of self-discovery to go through before they end up on the same page.
