Born as Catherine Martin on September 20th, 1948, in Paris, Charlotte was a successful model in the 1960s and 1970s and remains a painter to this day. She is also famous for having dated both guitarists Eric Clapton and Jimmy Page. After a strict and confined childhood, she decided to change her name and move to London, living a hedonistic life as a model.

In Eric's autobiography, he writes: "At the Speakeasy Club, I had first met one of the great loves of my life, a very beautiful French model, Charlotte Martin. I was smitten with her from the very first moment I set eyes on her. [...] Charlotte was an incredible girl, more interested in films, art, and literature than in modeling, and we had a great time together." They had a relationship between 1965 and 1968. It is often said that Eric broke up with her because he fell deeply in love with Pattie Boyd (George Harrison's wife). Pattie also mentioned in her biography that she suspected Charlotte and her husband of having an affair after that.

It was Roger Daltrey's (The Who) wife, Heather, who introduced Jimmy and Charlotte backstage after the Royal Albert Hall gig in 1970, during Jimmy's 26th birthday party. He said he fell in love with her at first sight and, after speaking for a long time, did not hesitate when she invited him to her flat that night. Shortly after, she became known as the new "Mrs. Page," a title previously attributed to Pamela Des Barres. It was the beginning of a long and stormy relationship that ended in 1986. They never officially married, Page stating that the legal marriage system was not important to him. They also had a daughter, Scarlet Page, in 1971, who later became a photographer. Nowadays, Jimmy Page is on good terms with Charlotte. He said in an interview with The Independent in 2004: "Every Christmas, we are all together, all the mums and all the children (…). We are a close-knit family."

To this day, Charlotte has remarried (to Ernest D. Riall) and has been living as a painter. Through her paintings, she often explores her escape from her dark childhood, and the influence of 1960s pop culture remains strongly present in her art.

The week ended on January 10 with what seemed to be the completion of a makeshift control room by Glyn Johns. Given that the tape recorder is Harrison’s, it’s odd that on a day where good progress seems to be made, George casually announces he’s leaving the group, suggesting the group put an ad in the NME for a replacement in a discussion with John and Mal. The filming is stopped, and although it wasn’t captured by the cameras, Harrison apparently then says: “See you round the clubs.” One wonders if Harrison’s seemingly abrupt departure was premeditated because he was scheduled to attend a recording session for the Apple group Trash that evening at Trident Studios. The group was working on a song called “King of Fuh,” and John Barham’s string parts were being recorded at this session. Barham recalled the session as being lighthearted; “There was a lot of laughs when they played the tape in the studio,” he told author Stefan Granados in Those Were the Days: The Beatles and Apple. The day’s events also inspired Harrison to write the song “Wah Wah” when he returned home; it later appeared on All Things Must Pass. Much else happened at Esher that was part of a personal drama playing out for George. A French model named Charlotte Martin had broken up with Eric Clapton. Pattie was friends with the girl, and Pattie said she could come and live with her and George after Clapton broke up with her. While Martin was living with the Harrisons, she and George began having an affair. The affair prompted Pattie to go and live with Belinda (née Watson) and Jean-Claude Volpeliere-Pierrot, a fashion photographer, whose sister was the model Marie-Lise Volpeliere-Pierrot, one of Pattie’s closest friends during her modeling years. Jean-Claude’s wife Belinda was a model and fashion stylist. They had two sons (one of whom Ben, became lead singer of the 1980s British pop band Curiosity Killed the Cat). That night when George came home and Pattie wasn’t there, he supposedly asked Martin to leave and then rang Pattie at Jean-Claude and Belinda’s wanting to get back together. Harrison also had dinner at some point in the evening with Klaus Voormann and his wife Christine, most likely after leaving Esher and before he worked in the studio with the group Trash. Harrison was clearly at wit’s end, not only with the Beatles but also with his personal love life. He was obviously seeking some kind of comfort and solace and also went and visited his parents at their home in the country and went to Liverpool.

She was very beautiful in an austere way, classically French, with long legs and an incredible figure, but it was her eyes that got on me. They were slightly Asian with a downward slant, and a little bit sad. We started dating right away and soon moved in together into a flat in Regents Park belonging to Stigwood's partner, David Shaw, who was the financial brains behind the organization. Charlotte was an incredible girl, more interested in films, art and literature than in modeling, and we had a great time together.

How did you feel when Charlotte Martin was staying with you and George? What exactly made you think something was going on between them?

Charlotte and Eric had a huge row at Cilla Black’s New Years Eve party. Charlotte had been quite friendly with me, and when she’d needed a place to stay, I hadn’t hesitated a moment. I invited her to stay with us at Kinfauns. She had no where to go, Eric had told her to never come back to his and had left the party without her. By the light of day I knew I had made a mistake. Darling Hubby had not brought me tea in bed as he usually did and when I made my way to the kitchen, there were George and Charlotte, heads together, having a very cozy morning. I didn’t say anything then and Charlotte returned to the guest room and George went to his studio. Later after a lovely dinner I made, after washing up, the quiet laughter and whispering coming from the living room set off alarms. Later in bed, George denied anything was going on between him and Charlotte. “Don’t be a nag, Pattie,” he had the gall to say! And the next afternoon he told me he was tired of being trapped and wanted a go with Charlotte. Furious and heartbroken, I packed some things and went to stay with my friends in London. I got quite drunk, but Belinda refused to let me call George. “You must wait for him to come to his senses,” she told me. I’m glad I listened. I didn’t humiliate myself further. In a few days a very contrite George begged me to come back. I did and that was that. He only said he couldn’t live without me, but there were no promises he couldn’t or wouldn’t keep. We stayed together five and a half more years. It’s funny. I never forgave Charlotte, but apparently I could forgive George most anything.
