Holiday Gift Guide for Swimmers
Looking for the perfect gift for the swimmer in your life? I am grateful to work with these companies, and could not coach or train the way I do without them. Read why these four brands and products are indispensable in my training, and take advantage of some exclusive discounts as part of the Train Daly community. Happy Holidays!
Vasa Trainer Dryland Training Equipment
Vasa Trainer played a big part in my dryland program in high school, as an aspiring collegiate athlete. For over 30 years, they have been helping aquatic athletes train smarter, and perform better with their line of products that fit a variety of training goals and budgets. I am proud to continue to work with them into my professional coaching and masters swimming career, training with their products, and creating the best content and training programs.
The Swim Ergometer is the ultimate dryland conditioning tool. It’s my favorite training tool for improving stroke power. The power meter provides objective feedback on stroke power, setting baselines with test sets, and monitoring left to right asymmetries. It creates accountability as fatigue sets in, providing instant feedback on progress, stroke for stroke, with great carryover to the water.
As a young swimmer, I cut my teeth with the Vasa Trainer Pro. It’s a total body training tool for developing swim-specific endurance, strength and power, head to toe. In addition to stroke technique and conditioning, it can be used to perform an endless amount of traditional pushing, pulling, and lower body squatting patterns. It literally replaced my commercial gym in 2020, and I could not have trained without it.
I do not go anywhere without a pair of bands in my gym bag. Dryland cords with hand paddles, are the easiest way to teach and reinforce technique on land, then hop right back in the water and apply it. They can be anchored to any door or pool ladder, making them the best investment for on deck dryland technique and muscular endurance work.
Save 10% OFF all Vasa Trainer products from the Ergometer, Trainer Pro, or Dryland bands with code DALY10 at checkout.
The Magic5 Custom Goggles

Toss your old swedes and vanquishers, and check out The Magic 5. The Magic 5 uses facial scanning technology through your mobile device, to custom fit the gaskets and nose bridge specific to your face. Their first-class comfortable fit also come with first-class materials that do not fog, rot, or fall off. Get 20% OFF with checkout code DALY20, and never look back!
Zygo Waterproof Headset
Swimming is a solitary activity. Unlike other individual sports, the water limits auditory motivation or immediate feedback. Now swimmers, get instant audible coaching feedback, while they swim, with Zygo’s wireless waterproof headset. I'm very excited to have a product that allows me to communicate and make stroke corrections immediately from the deck, while my swimmer’s faces are in the water. Zygo’s bone conduction technology and wireless walkie talkie are crystal clear, allowing my swimmers to get the feedback they need without having to stop. You can also stream your favorite playlist directly from your phone, swim with their app of guided workouts, or use the tempo trainer, making it practical whether you have a coach on deck or not. Get your set and enjoy 10% OFF with checkout code DALY10!
Air Relax Recovery Boots
The best gear and training is only as good as the recovery. The best athletes know that adaptation from training stress occurs between workouts, with a smart sleep, nutrition, and recovery program. If you are already maximizing your sleep and nutrition strategies, it’s time to focus on some of the additional methods you can use to accelerate recovery between workouts, and increase training intensity.
Pneumatic compression devices have been show to decrease perceived soreness between workouts, particularly upper body compression, specific to upper body dominant sports, like swimming. They improve blood lactate clearing after particularly grueling anaerobic conditioning sets. Compression also combats physiological stressors associated with travel, important for athletes who may travel to events and sit for prolonged periods of time.
I have been using Air Relax compression boots for the last 3 years. It’s a relaxing way to finish a hard day of work and training, boosting a diminished ability to recovery as I age and continue to train and compete. I appreciate their competitive pricing in the space, outselling all other brands, with industry-leading quality and durability. They are a FDA approved medical device, providing twice the pressure of comparable devices. If you are in the market for compression recovery, check out Air Relax.

That he was overweight and in horrible shape, Brian knew even without a stress EKG and a physician's assistant. When he got off the ergometer after ten minutes, he was sweating like a pig and breathing hard like a steam locomotive.
FLASH
His physical therapist had him do some sit-ups next. He didn't enjoy the visits to the office. But they had to be if he wanted to get the back problems under control for good.
FLASH
Now it was off to the butterfly machine. Brian liked the gym. A quiet atmosphere, a pleasant clientele. And his personal trainer was a kick-ass guy. Actually, Brian hadn't needed assistance working out for a long time. But he just liked working with professionals.
FLASH
It was rush hour in the free weight area at Gold's Gym. The air literally reeked of testosterone. But after years of hard training, Brian and his buddy didn't notice. Whereas no one here had said Brian in years. Here he was simply Brutus
FLASH
That was a good workout. His client had been properly challenged. First at the workout, then in the showers of the hardcore gym, which was located in a run-down warehouse on the harbor. But next time jerking off will cost extra, Brutus grunted and let his lusciously tattooed muscles play once more as a farewell.

What a finish! 🚣 🤩
Lauren Rowles and Gregg Stevenson bring home the gold after a sprint finish 🥇
Afghan veteran triumph in rowing at Vaires-sur-Marne. The former Green Beret Royal Marines commando Gregg Stevenson serving with the 24 Royal Engineer Regiment on that fateful day in 2009, before suffering a traumatic injury in an explosion in Helmand Province - Afghanistan, as part of his tour in support of the Royal Marines, Gregg was on the lookout for roadside IEDs (improvised explosive devices) when he came under enemy fire, which led to a double leg amputation.
Now, Former commando Stevenson won gold 🥇 with his partner, Lauren Rowles 🥇 and are Paralympic rowing champions, in a nail-biting finish in the PR2** mixed-double sculls. Lauren Rowles, 26, who has no feeling below her chest, became the first woman to have won a rowing gold at three Paralympic Games.
🥈China 🇨🇳 🥉Israel 🇮🇱
Britain secures three rowing golds, including a fourth straight victory in the mixed coxed four.
**PR2 in rowing - Trunk and Arms - This category is for rowers who have functional use of the trunk and who are not able to use the sliding seat to transfer their power to the ergometer because of significantly weakened function or mobility of the lower limbs.

Abstract
Hand-grip strength has been identified as one limiting factor for manual lifting and carrying loads. To obtain epidemiologically relevant hand-grip strength data for pre-employment screening, we determined maximal isometric hand-grip strength in 1,654 healthy men and 533 healthy women aged 20–25 years. Moreover, to assess the potential margins for improvement in hand-grip strength of women by training, we studied 60 highly trained elite female athletes from sports known to require high hand-grip forces (judo, handball). Maximal isometric hand-grip force was recorded over 15 s using a handheld hand-grip ergometer. Biometric parameters included lean body mass (LBM) and hand dimensions. Mean maximal hand-grip strength showed the expected clear difference between men (541 N) and women (329 N). Less expected was the gender related distribution of hand-grip strength: 90% of females produced less force than 95% of males. Though female athletes were significantly stronger (444 N) than their untrained female counterparts, this value corresponded to only the 25th percentile of the male subjects. Hand-grip strength was linearly correlated with LBM. Furthermore, both relative hand-grip strength parameters (F max/body weight and F max/LBM) did not show any correlation to hand dimensions. The present findings show that the differences in hand-grip strength of men and women are larger than previously reported. An appreciable difference still remains when using lean body mass as reference. The results of female national elite athletes even indicate that the strength level attainable by extremely high training will rarely surpass the 50th percentile of untrained or not specifically trained men.

Whole Egg Vs. Egg White Ingestion During 12 weeks of Resistance Training in Trained Young Males: A Randomized Controlled Trial
Whole egg vs. egg white ingestion during 12 weeks of resistance training in trained young males: a randomized controlled trial. J Strength Cond Res 35(2): 411-419, 2021-The primary purpose was to compare the effects of whole egg ingestion and egg white ingestion during 12 weeks of resistance training (RT) on muscle cross-sectional area, body composition, muscular strength, and anaerobic power in resistance-trained young males. A secondary purpose was to examine systemic hormonal responses. Thirty resistance-trained young males were randomly assigned to one of 2 groups: Whole eggs + RT (WER; n = 15) or egg whites + RT (ERT; n = 15).
Whole eggs + RT ingested 3 whole eggs immediately following RT, whereas ERT ingested an isonitrogenous quantity consisting of 6 egg whites immediately following RT. Before and after 12 weeks of whole-body undulating periodized RT (3 sessions per week), knee extensor muscle mass and cross-sectional area (computed tomography), lean body mass and body fat percentage (bioelectrical impedance), muscular strength (knee extension, handgrip strength), Wingate (cycle ergometer), and serum concentrations of hormones were assessed. There was a significant group × time interaction for body fat percentage, serum testosterone, knee extension, and handgrip strength with greater improvements observed in WER. There was a significant main effect of time (p < 0.05) for knee extensor muscle mass, cross-sectional area, lean body mass, anaerobic power, and all other blood hormones. There was a trend (p = 0.06) in the WER group for having a greater change in lean body mass compared with that of ERT.
Postexercise whole egg ingestion increases knee extension and handgrip strength, testosterone, and reduces body fat percentage compared with postexercise egg white ingestion, despite no group differences in muscle mass, in resistance-trained young males. Whole eggs consumption may be preferable during RT programs geared toward the improvement of muscular strength and body fat percentage.

For the question game:
14: What are your favorite apps besides tumblr?
and 25: Do you/ Have you played any sports?
Thank you for asking! (from this list)
14: I already talked about Pixels, now I wanna mention Too Good To Go: it's a food "saving" app, via which restaurants and grocery stores can offer surplus food at severely reduced prices. You can see who's participating near you and whether they have any offers today, and reserve/pay through the app and go and pick them up. Mostly they're "surprise bags", so you don't know exactly what you're getting - I've gotten pre-packed and pre-cut ingredients for a Korean soup that way, and a big bag of fresh pasta. So it's a bit of an adventure, but if you can handle that, it is a really nice way to get really good food for cheap.
25: I used to row in school. The town I grew up in was on a river that is just right for rowing: not too big (so no commercial ship traffic) and not too small (rowboats can be LONG and need a lot of space to turn 180!) I love rowing, especially in actual boats, ESPECIALLY in wooden boats. Ergometers are okay, but nothing beats the motion of being on the water. And wooden boats are just. beautiful.
I no longer row on the water, though, because the nearest river here is the Rhine, and that is WAYYYY too big and busy. I don't wanna row on it. Also, I don't really want to find a team again? My social battery these days is minuscule, and trying to find a team you mesh with, plus then interacting with them every time you want to go on the water, is not what I want to spend it on. So I row on my machine and try to not pine too much.
Thank you for these!

Kräht der Hahn auf dem Mist…
Handy sagt 10 Grad, also nein und gehe hinunter.
Also kein Damm, keine Hunde, die uns begrüßen ..
Also toi toi toi…

That's the main reason I went to the gym for my PE in the uni (we have mandatory PE for two semesters, and we can choose from various sports and exercises).
I had a great trainer who did a lot of different exercises with weights and to increase stamina. I loved it so much and I hope to go to his class next semester and maybe train to compete in rowing ergometer races (I was really good with it and with some training I might set a new uni record)!
If you have the money or means, go lift some weights!! You might just find another way to enjoy exercise.
I’ve been getting into weightlifting recently (I’m certainly not a gym rat and never really took exercise seriously) and when I tell you what they have been HIDING from us!!!!
Lifting heavy weights makes you feel so physically GOOD. I feel strong, I feel balanced, I feel powerful and capable. The mental and physical health benefits of weight lifting are nearly infinite, and I’m getting these benefits within two weeks of starting! I can already see changes in my body and in my mind.
Women are discouraged from heavy weightlifting because society demands we are dainty, small, and submissive, so many women do weight loss-type workouts like Pilates and cardio. (Nothing wrong with these either! But perhaps analyze if you are doing these things to make yourself healthier or to make yourself look better for men).
Please please please do not be intimidated by weightlifting. Please find a beginners program online and start lifting heavy! You will never regret it, and it’s much easier than it looks!
