BOTD: Horned Lark
Tumblr media
Photo: Doug Greenberg
"On open fields in winter, flocks of Horned Larks walk and run on the ground, examining the soil and stubble in search of seeds. If disturbed, the flock makes away in swift, twisting flight, making soft lisping callnotes. This species, the only native lark in North America, begins nesting very early in spring in those same barren fields, and the tinkling songs of the males come from high overhead as they perform their flight-song display. The 'horns' of the Horned Lark are little tufts of feathers, visible only at close range."

A Yellow-feathered Feathursday
Today we bring you all the yellow-feathered birds illustrated in hand-colored wood engravings by British author and wood engraver Eric Fitch Daglish (1892-1966) from his 1948 publication Birds of the British Isles, published in London by J. M. Dent & Sons in 1948 in a limited edition of 1500 copies. From top to bottom:
Eurasian Golden Oriole (Oriolus oriolus)
European Goldfinch (Carduelis carduelis)
Horned Lark or Shore Lark (Eremophila alpestris)
Yellowhammer (Emberiza citrinella)
Yellow Wagtail (Motacilla flava)
Birds of the British Isles is a donation from our friend, Wisconsin wood engraver Tony Drehfal.

I found range maps that show worldwide and I think I'm just gonna post the maps instead of describing them. Orange is breeding, blue is nonbreeding, and purple is year-round.

Horned larks nest on the ground in open grasslands and often place things such as pebbles and clods of dirt around their nest.
Female courting displays resemble taking a dust bath. This is unfortunate, because they do actually take dust baths too, which means sometimes a male will try to mate with a female that was just trying to keep her feathers in good condition.
Unfortunately they're in steep decline.

Some ideas for Gym Leader surname headcanons
Falkner Hayato (from his Japanese surname, which means "Falcon.")
Bugsy Kamakiri (from Japanese for "mantis", a reference to his Scyther. The name "Bugsy" is a nickname he got because of his love for Bug-type Pokemon.)
Whitney Akane (again, from her Japanese name.)
Morty Misuto (from Japanese for "mist." Referencing the fact that his badge is called the Fog Badge.)
Chuck Shijima (from his Japanese name.)
Jasmine Kotetsu (from Japanese for "steel.")
Clair Blackthorn. (Named after the city she's from.)
Norman Hayashi (I already gave May this surname, and Norman is May's dad, so...)
Winona Tsubame (from Japanese for "swallow.")
Roark Tougan and Byron Tougan (from Byron's Japanese name.)
Fantina Delacroix (A French surname meaning "of the cross", which I think fits because A) Fantina is implied to be from Kalos (which is based on France) and B) she has a plus-sign on her dress that is kind of cross-shaped.)
Candice Fubuki (from Japanese for "snowstorm.")
Skyla Alpestra (from the Latin name of the Horned Lark, AKA Eremophila alpestris. According to Bulpapedia, her English name may be based on "skylark," a bird in the same family as the horned lark.)
This is all I'm able to think of at the moment!
Pokemon headcanons: Names
These are my personal headcanons for the names of the protagonists and some of the rivals of the Pokémon games.
Kanto:
Red Akiyama
Blue Oak/Green Oak (canon)
Leaf Aoki
Johto:
Ethan Hibiki
Lyra Koto
Kristine "Kris" Mariner
Silver Rosso
Hoenn:
May Hayashi
Brendan Birch (I HC him as the rival character, meaning he's the professor's kid.)
Wally Tsuru
Sinnoh:
Dawn Yugata
Lucas Kagayaki
Barry Palmer (I HC that his dad Palmer goes by his last name.)
Unova:
Hilda and Hilbert Grayson
Cheren Kuroki-Petrov
Bianca Caro
Rosalind (Rosa) Whittaker
Nathanial "Nate" Blake
Kalos
Serena Fontaine
Calem Belmont
Alola
Elio Taiyo
Selene Yoru
Notes (mostly based on headcanons):
I HC Hilda and Hilbert to be twins, so they have the same surname.
Cheren is part Sinnohan (so the Pokemon world's equivalent of part-Japanese) and part "whatever the Pokemon equivalent of Bulgarian is."
Ethan and Lyra's surnames in my headcanons come from their canon names in Japanese (Hibiki and Kotone.)
Elio and Selene are originally from the Kanto region before moving to Alola. Their surnames mean "sun" and "night" respectively.
Nate's surname comes from the English name of his manga counterpart.
