The jackal's words glued and echoed on Shadow's mind, he could simply not ignore the jackal's taunts anymore. He was getting tired of it, he did not like people messing with his head, he would attack Infinite—if only to silence him.

Shadow's aura glew, iridescent light emanated from him as he prepared a ball of energy.

"Hypernova Blast"

he shouted, as he shot a blast of hypercharged chaos energy towards Sonic—Sonic?! what was he doing here.

The blue blur barely dodged the energy blast of Shadow, but was hit by the shockwave of hot air traveling with it.

Shadow looked to his surroundings, he was no longer in the forest he was on with some of his friends—and some of his foes, No. He was in the middle of a ruined city.

He immediately recognized it as Sunset City, except it looked like if a bomb had detonated on it.

Sonic impacted against a pile of rubble, he looked back at Shadow, with fear on his eyes...Until that fear vanished, a small light of hope returned to Sonic's eyes.

He tried to stand up but couldn't, he was still in a lot of pain due of his recent injury.

"Shadow... is that really you..."

Sonic murmured to himself. Shadow was not looking at Sonic, he was more focused still very baffled and confused to his current situation.

"..."

"I hate this."

Shadow had already gone through a lot, all those weeks of fighting Death Star, all that time of peace where he managed to actually enjoy himself with Devil Horns and Flower. the pain he underwent after he made a deal with Ephialtes to wake up from a curse. All of that suffering, all that work, all the joy, all the good moments—just to realize none of that was real... and that everything was just way worse in reality.

Sonic tried to stand up again, but he immediately fell down to the floor, coughing. The hit had made him stab himself in the torso, and he was already suffering for this, thankfully Sonic was healing fast thanks to his chaos powers.

Sonic managed to stand slowly, and walk towards Shadow, who was still lost in his thoughts, he was angry, dissapointed, and feeling like a failure... and he still did not know all the details of this reality he had woken up to.

Have you ever thought of how one of your skelebois might react to being offered a flower? Not even in a romantic gesture? Just handed any old flower just because the person offering thought it looked pretty or thought it reminded them of one of your skeleton lads?

I haven't, no. I guess I'm not used to getting/offering flowers so it never crossed my mind x'D

The reactions would be a mixed bag if I were to include all my skelesons. Here we go!

Some would be really thrilled, like Big B, Razzle, Cyperus and Ghost (if he could get some, that is). Sedge would be thrilled too but he won't show that, baka.

Some would be happy for the sweet gesture, like Rook, Birch, Vienna, Sangria, Haze, Dullahan, Shard, Boss, Case, Silk, Zephyr and Rewind, and also (gladly) accept the flower.

Some would be "oh, a gift!", like Indi, Scam, Faux, Orange, Fennek, Monoceros, Fang, Stray and Slasher, because gifts are neat and that's most probably the only reason for their positive reaction.

Some would accept it with a smile but honestly don't really care, like King, Oneiros, Monarch and Vigil.

Some would be confused as to why the heck you're giving them a flower, like Ephialtes, Fault, Rum and Bad Dog. The last two would scoff at it too.

And Slate would lock up and give the flower deadly looks while *trying* to politely decline (emphasis on trying!).

Halfway through re-reading Doctrine of Labyrinths for the uncounted time - have any recs for what to read afterwards?

Rereading Doctrine of Labyrinths is always a good choice! Least as far as I’m concerned. And fic recs, oh boy. :D I went back through all my bookmarks and then the whole Doctrine of Labyrinths fic tag on AO3 just in case and pulled out…a bunch of things. So here you go, to taste.

Let’s kick off with some good not!sex-pollen fic! This one perfectly hits the intersection of “hot and fucked up” that I’m looking for almost all the time, and that’s especially apropos for this pairing. Set during Corambis while Felix is streetwalking and runs into some trouble - namely, some people who want to make sure he won’t give no for an answer. Mildmay helps.

Post-series fic where Felix finds some strange carvings in a cave by the lighthouse, and Mildmay starts having sex dreams about Felix. It’s a really good piece of post-series work with character development and feelings and also some plot that serves the former in the best ways (just like in the series itself!) and ultimately some sweet, sweet Felix/Mildmay. So sue me, I’m here for it.

Always bravely acquiesce by Petra (Felix/Mildmay)

This is a nice long fic establishing Felix/Mildmay with a lot of negotiation and consent issues and we all know how much I like both of those things. Set post-Mirador, but not Corambis compliant (written before it came out). And featuring some very good sex writing.

Settling by Harukami (minor Felix/Kay)

Truly lovely post-series fic with Felix and Mildmay (and Kay) negotiating what life looks like in the aftermath of the series. I’m such a sucker for fics like this - dealing with the aftermath and emotional repercussions of things, and, in this one, continuing the process of healing that began in Corambis, because for these folks there’s always further to go. But they’re getting there.

Ephialtes by Harukami (Felix/Malkar)

This fic is just…really well done. It’s Felix pre-series, but just pre-series, but also flashing back - showing the time when he gets free of Malkar and starts coming into his own at the Mirador, and digging a little into his pre-series relationship with Thaddeus. And also I’m always here for Felix/Malkar content. 

Lighthouse Maintenance by Tedronai

A minor accident at the lighthouse provides some opportunities for brotherly feelings. Short, sweet, delightful.

Oh, what a regular badass, Milly-fox. by Pitseleh

The modern model!Felix and bodyguard!Mildmay AU that was written for me several years ago and I love so much for so many reasons - I don’t often enjoy modern/non-fantasy AUs of my fantasy books, but this is one that really worked for me. I would have read a lot more of this one, but I love what there already is and the vivid picture it paints of Felix and Mildmay in this universe. 

At the Hands of the Wicked by Quasar

This was one of the first fics in this fandom I ever read, written for Yuletide way back in the day, and it’s a major standout in the fandom as a whole, I think. It’s nice and meaty (15k!) and plotty (which is a rarity, and while I don’t need it in my fic always a pleasure just the same). Set post-Virtu, Mildmay is seeing things, but it might not be that he’s crazy.

The Golden Ones by Ankaret

Set between The Mirador and Corambis, the fic where Shannon catches up with Felix and Mildmay on the road, looking for help with a problem he’s having. Both Felix and Mildmay’s voices are perfect in this, and while Felix and Shannon’s relationship isn’t something I’ve spent a lot of headspace considering, but I love reading other peoples’ takes on it, and find this point in the series such a productively emotionally raw time to set fic in. Also another nice long one.

Something Old, Something New by violet_quill

Post-series fic where news arrives at Grimglass regarding Shannon Teverius. Which takes the fic into a really interesting place both in terms of Felix’s sexuality, his relationship with Mildmay, and his past relationship with Shannon. I don’t really have a coherent way of expressing what I like so much about this fic, but it’s very much a post-series snapshot that fits very well into canon. 

Lie Down Weeping at Nightfall by Zaatar

Mildmay POV of some of his time with Malkar. It hurts so good, and is just a really well done piece with fantastic Mildmay voice. The way that it plays with the crossover between Malkar and Felix in Mildmay’s (very fucked up) head is absolutely fantastic.

The Heart of Light by Lena7142

When Felix shows up to rescue Mildmay from Malkar, Malkar already has his claws in Mildmay, which is to say his blood magic in Mildmay, which is to say he’s going to either have Mildmay kill Felix or vice versa. Things don’t quite go as planned for Malkar, but they don’t go very well for Mildmay either. Truly delightful whump fic where everyone suffers.

Inquiries into the Heart of the World by mikkey_bones (Felix/Gideon)

I have not read much Gideon point-of-view fic - probably because there isn’t much of it. But this one is incredible - basically, Gideon’s POV of his and Felix’s relationships, through the prism of the five books of his that Felix mentions at the end of The Mirador. It’s really well done.

some weird sickness in the dark by monsterq

As a complication of the obligation d’ame, Mildmay and Felix share dreams, which is fun for precisely no one. The dream sequence in this is gloriously, perfectly disturbing, and I love it very much.
