Dragon Ball Z: Abridged Episode 20 Review
Originally posted on October 30th, 2015
Conflating anime with wrestling is, unsurprisingly, an amazing decision.
Tumblr media
“Namekimania 2011” is my favorite episode of Dragonball Z: Abridged, and it is my favorite for very good reasons: the episode is packed to the brim with great jokes, Team Four Star experiments with their approach to adaptation in it, and it even manages to find time to focus on the heroism and honor that are the crux of the source material.
In fact, “Namekimania” is so good that I could just list off all the great lines from the episode and end the review here. But I’m not gonna do that, because that’s no fun (though the strays are loaded with quotes this week because I have no self-control).
Let’s start with the key joke/device of this episode. “Namekimania 2011” has Team Four Star making the bold decision to reframe a somewhat inconsequential fight between Vegeta and Recoome (played by Ganxingba delightfully mimicking the staged charisma of a professional wrestler) as a live televised pro wrestling match.
And it works wonderfully, because Team Four Star commits fully to this device, incorporating an audience track of cheering and booing, having Jeice and Burter serve as announcers/commentators, and giving us “recaps” of what we’ve missed on the few times they cut away to other characters.
The “anime fight as pro wrestling” device also works extraordinarily well because it captures the ridiculousness of both of the mediums. Fights in anime are generally ridiculous affairs, with characters breaking the laws of physics and rules of the established universe very frequently, coupled with over the top blood, screams, and emotions. Wrestling similarly is over the top, with heroes and villains appearing as ridiculous caricatures, as well as allowing the wrestlers to clearly and blatantly disregard the rules in order to get an audience response.
When combined, the ridiculousness from both mediums complement each other, with the unreasonable action and caricatured fighters blending seamlessly, and it’s especially fun to see how the live commentary of Jeice and Burter serves to enhance the thrill of the fight itself.
“Namekimania” also finds time to embrace the hyperemotionalism of anime (its other extreme) in two scenes. The first is Gohan’s speech, as he walks slowly towards Recoome, broken and battered, that he is the son of Son Goku, the one man who can kick Recoome’s ass, and the second is the scene where Goku steps out of the spaceship, which pairs an 80’s rock song with a series of slow clips showing him gradually exiting the spaceship. With that scene, we know something is coming, and some serious shit is about to go down.
Rating: 5/5

Stray Observations
Recoome’s introduction speech is the greatest thing ever, and I will fight you if you say otherwise.
Gohan: “Who are you talking to?” Burter: “The audience.” Jeice: “We’re doin’ commentary, mate.”
Recoome: “Because the name’s Recoome. And it rhymes with doom. And you’re gonna be hurtin’, ALL…TOO…SOON!”
Recoome: “Silly Vegeta. The only thing Recoome sells, is merchandise!”
Spokesperson: “Spacey’s. It’s good food. In spaaace.”
Krillin: “Hey, Gohan, look! He picked Vegeta, like a…” Gohan: “Like a Vegetable, yeah.”
Krillin Owned: And we’re up to 12 with a lovely Recoome Kick.
Krillin: “Seems he threw my nervous system out of whack there. Can’t quite feel the pain. There it is. Owwwwww.”

Pokemon Horizons is so GOOOOOD- I just now finished Ep20 and loved it!
Anyways time for a whole essay on why I love this show already
I've grown up watching Ash and the Pokemon anime and I've rewatched some Pokemon animes many times (I've watched DPPT, XY, and Sun/Moon upwards of 5 times each I'd say!) and am so attached to it.. but I really think Horizons is like. The best thing to ever happen to the Pokemon anime. It is just a great SHOW in general and I love it's characters and original stories and ideas but also the way it shows the world of Pokemon it is SO GOOD
Anyways some thoughts on the recent episodes I watched (AND I GOTTA SPEED UP CUZ PART 3 JUST CAME OUT OH MY)
-The entire arc with Dot exiting the ship to help find Liko with Iono helping was so wonderful! Liko, Roy, and Dot all battling together against Spinel, but also Sprigatito, Fuecoco, and Quaxly all being together was just SO GOOOOOD ITS SO GOOD THESE EPISODES WERE AMAZING!! The first part we were introduced to Liko, Roy, and occasionally Dot from her room, and saw them all grow as characters in this adventure, and HZ015 and HZ016 really felt like a defining moment of Horizons as the three team up together I LOVE IT
-HZ018 was really amazing! I loved getting a look into Friede's past and this episode made me care so much more about Pikachu and Charizard as Pokemon species and characters! Friede is really wonderful!
-HZ019 was super charming but also fun to me bcuz I made a joke to myself about "wow we learn something new about friedes past every episode, i cant wait to randomly learn hes been divorced or something". The shock I felt when I learned MURDOCK WAS THE ONE WITH A DIVORCE
-Also between HZ019 and HZ020 I really appreciate the attention given to Galar. I'm not a huge fan of SWSH (even though Legends Arceus and SV are some of my favorite games) but Journeys robbed it so much of proper anime time, I'm really glad Horizons is picking that up
ALSO HZ020'S LITWICKS WERE SO CUTE I LOVE LITWICK SO MUCH AWWWW
My three favorite unevolved Pokemon are Litwick, Sprigatito, and Hatenna! So like.. Sprigatito as the main Pokemon, Litwicks all over HZ020, AND THE NEXT EPISODE IS CALLED "THE LONELY HATENNA" THANK U HORIZONS
I love the Rising Volt Tacklers so much. I love the airship and how we have a cozy hub area that goes across the regions- and I love how they actually show the adventure by having training or other type episodes while the Brave Olivine is on its way to a new area. The Brave Olivine gives me that same kinda comfort that say, Beach House from Steven Universe gives me and I love that
Also back on the Rising Volt Tacklers but WOW what a great cast of characters! I really appreciate when an animated show has adult characters, as I feel it opens up a lot more connection for older audiences (shout out to The Owl House and Gravity Falls for wonderful characters like Eda and Stan!). Friede is a delight, Mollie is absolutely wonderful and I love her, Murdock is so sweet, Orla is amazing, and Ludlow sure is fishing and I love him for that
Liko, Roy, and Dot also are just amazing characters! Liko is a fantastic protagonist and I honestly would say I prefer her over Ash! I find her character really amazingly written and relatable in a lot of ways! Like being socially awkward and trying to find her dream and purpose, or even smaller traits like "avoiding putting too much on her sandwich so everyone can have ingredients" LIKE YEA ME TOO I FEEL THAT LIKO 😭
I also think they fantastically handle the Pokemon variety. Journeys was "90% Kanto 10% other stuff" which really hurt the idea of all the regions together.. but Horizons KNOCKS IT OUT OF THE PARK. The Paldea starters are the main face, our adventure is in Paldea quite often, but the airship has other gens of Pokemon from Noctowl to Metagross to Rockruff to Alcremie, and we see Pokemon like Beheeyem and Oshawott in other episodes. The variety is PERFECT to where Paldea is clearly the focus but the other regions still have a role in the anime and its so GOOD
The variety is so well done, I love Pikachu and Charizard here! I would usually be a bit bored of these two, but the variety and focus on Paldea is so amazing that these two are wonderful additions! CAPTAIN PIKACHU IS AWESOME!!!
And the story is so interesting too! Searching for the ancient adventurers Pokemon and whatever secrets Terapagos may be holding. I already resonate so much with the characters I'm so excited for their adventures! I love the Explorers too! I love Team Rocket, but I think that they can often be repetitive and mess with the flow of the show, often cutting episodes short or ruining interesting episode concepts. With a new enemy, the episodes feel a lot more COMPLETE and fluidly flowing into one another, and it's such a nice refreshing change of pace!!!
This show really is just... wonderful!
I geniunely think that even only 20 episodes in this might be my favorite Pokemon anime. I've been so slow watching it because I actually wanna just sit down and properly focus on every episode (which is hard for me but this show deserves that much attention!)
I love this, and I'm so excited to watch more!

Welcome to another episode of B yells about Madlax, EP20! EPISODE TWENTY! I'M FROTHING AT THE MOUTH!
There was a lot and a lot of interesting information and I'll get to that later, but I need to get this off my chest real quick: LIMELDA REALLY DID SAY "I LOVE YOU, MADLAX" AND "I COULD'VE KEPT DANCING WITH HER" ABOUT A GUNFIGHT! I'M SCREECHING INTO MY PLUSH ORCA! (Interesting thing where she said "I'll forgive my own existence when I kill you." More on that later.)
And now that I got this out of my system, uh, okay so the most interesting thing is obviously that a) Madlax killed either her own father or Margaret's father - or they have the same father, either way Madlax killed him because Margaret wanted him to die (and I have a feeling that this might get icky if the world that is visible in that flashback is the world Monday Friday or Friday Monday, I'm getting confused, envisioned when he opened The Door) and b) that Laetitia is a moment, not a person, which makes me wonder if Poupée is also a moment or rather a person that got caught up in the moment (we also saw pages of one of the books/the book flying around in his flashback scene). Oh, maybe Laetitia is Margaret's moment caught in time, and Poupée is Madlax's moment (which would explain the part in the intro), but I'm not too sure on that.
I also wonder if the unease Nakhl feels is about the probably still missing page from Secondari that should still be with Madlax, who is currently bleeding out?! Because she threw herself in front of Vanessa?!?! (Side note: Am I kind of giggling about Limelda's continued annoyance with Vanessa? Yes. Something something we support women's wrongs.) Oh dear, this is going to go up in flames.
Blond Guy is also once again very creepy with his whole ~Margaret is my angel~ thing, I honestly had to gag. I also wonder if Lady Quanzitta knows what the unease that Nakhl feels is about. Things sure are getting interesting! On a little side note: I have a great fondness for Nakhl's and Madlax's conversation after Nakhl saved Madlax. Staying alive/in existence because of a promise is great (especially when one struggles to act on their internal convictions or whatever Nakhl called it. Especially especially because Madlax seems to think that she doesn't have a reason to stay alive.), I really loved that.

Hera and Persephone
Episode 119 was very striking to me, in many different ways. Hera’s speech/internal monologue in the cold open is quite possibly one of my favorite lines in the series. It gives us so much information on her character we’ve never seen before, and it’s powerful and tragic.
There’s a lot to unpack there that I can’t get to in this post, and it makes me even more curious about her past than I already was...But there’s one particular aspect of it I want to unpack, because that little speech made me realize something important about her character I never saw before.
I was already very struck in ep78 by just how sweet and gentle Hera was in the past. (Actually I was struck by the contrast between then and now in ep20). She’s so badass today, and can even be rather cold at times, it’s strange to see her as this sweet and innocent, warm and down to earth girl scared of a little blood. It almost doesn’t seem like she’s the same person.
It’s especially strange when compared with how she interacts with Eros and Artemis later in ep119. Despite knowing how she acts in modern day, I was actually surprised at how she treated them.
Despite being Queen, she treats Persephone with kindness, (a kindness that allows me to see that that sweet girl she once was is still there). Zeus is the main person we see her treating more coldly (with good reason), so I kinda thought she treated most people like Persephone and was surprised at her almost callousness towards Eros and Artemis.
The one thing I was surprised (but not ungrateful) about in her treatment of Persephone is that she is almost obsessed with her vision of Apollo. It made me happy that she is so concerned for Persephone, but I also wondered why the Queen of the gods put so much of her time and energy into this minor goddess and a vision.
But when I was saw these shots of 119...
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
And they finally made me connect something.
Young Hera...
Tumblr media
Reminds me of someone.
Tumblr media
And suddenly, when I connected that, a great many things about her made sense to me.
She treats Persephone the way she does, with such kindness, wanting to protect her, she is so reactive to her being hurt by Apollo...because she reminds her of herself.
She sees this sweet, on innocent girl, who loves the Earth, and her mother, and (who would kill for) her friends, but who is lively and full of fire...and she sees herself.
Why, in the end of ep119 she even becomes Persephone, further cementing to me that we are supposed to see the connections between them. I’m guessing she’s the only one with that power, and that’s why they asked her to do it, but I still think the implications are interesting. I wonder if it’s possible the reason she was able to pretend to be her is because they’re similar (or were once).
In the myths Zeus preys on Hera’s kindness...and ends up raping her, forcing her to marry him. I don’t know if that happened in LO, (I sincerely hope it went differently)...but if it did, it makes even more sense why she’d be so reactive to Apollo raping her.
Let’s not forget (though I’d very much like to)....
Tumblr media
I do actually like Zeus in LO, but he does do terrible things at times...and this ^^ is probably my least favorite line from him in the entire series right now. But if it’s true he raped Hera like in the myths...the connections are even stronger. Apollo even talks about making Persephone his Olympian...I really hope that’s not how things went down with Zeus and Hera back when...but it’s very possible.
Hera is as angry as she is at Apollo because...that’s what happened to her. except this time, she can do something about it. So she is going to (see end of ep120).
She reacts the way she does towards Hades way back in ep20
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
because she is so scared what happened to her is going to happen to Persephone.
At the time I thought she was just being nice to, and protective of, her, like any older woman should hearing that kind of talk. But it’s more than that. I think perhaps those lines could be applicable to her own past self too. Perhaps she was young and impressionable...and didn’t argue with Zeus. (I could see Zeus trying to impress Hera with little trinkets like he does Semele...and maybe if Zeus did make a speech similar to the one Apollo made Persephone...maybe Hera didn’t argue...)
Hera sees this sweet, down to earth girl, who loves the earth, and her mom, and is wild and free...and she doesn’t want her to be torn apart for Olympus. For a god. For a king. For a marriage...Like she was.
They call Persephone “something nice” in ep20, and she hates it...because that’s exactly how she was treated.
If Hades is going to be with Persephone, she wants to make sure he isnt going to treat Persephone like Zeus did her. (Notice that she only checks Hades as an acceptable suitor for Persephone until after it’s clear he’s moved on from her. ...I guess that was a test?? I’m not super familiar with the myths, just a few stories).
It goes without saying that I’m super excited to see what she does to Apollo in the next chapter. But I also am really hoping we get to hear more about their pasts at some point. Why is she his “golden traitor”? How did she get that scar? There were so many things that intrigued me. And how similar are Hera and Persephone, and Apollo and Zeus really? maybe the past will answer.

did cas really tell dean to kneel before their new god? did that actually happen? i thought him beating the shit out of dean in that alley was the most unrestrainedly horny thing this show had ever done ACTUALLY you know what scratch that new question: top horny moments from the cw's supernatural (2005 - 2020)
getting this ask feels like my sins of the last week have been weighed against the Trials I Have Gone Through since the premier of supernatural on the wb in september of 2005 and I’m not sure if it is a punishment or reward
some notes before we begin:
the ep with dean’s male siren was like, conceptually horny but not actually that horny because the dude was uglie. I’m sorry to this man
all you sam girls out there. I respect you but I do not respect jared padalecki who is JUST tall and has zero sex appeal. but those eps where he’s like, drinking ruby’s blood and then eating her pussy are. you know. I’ll give you that
I am ONLY UP TO SEASON 10 so fair warning this is not comprehensive but the horniness does seem to drop off sharply after the mark of cain is no longer in play lol gotta love a good demon murder tattoo plot
this is easily the most insane thing I’ve ever done, including the destiel manifesto
S1 EP12: the scene where dean gets healed by the faith healer, on his knees with a hand in his hair and looking somewhere between religious ecstasy, brain death and an orgasm. starting this list off great
S1 EP22: azazel possessing john winchester. no I will not explain further if u know u know <3
S3 EP10: dean being taunted by a dream version of himself, this is where we first got the daddy’s blunt little instrument line. still burned in my hippocampus a good 13 years later thank yew
S4 EP1: dean crawling out of his own grave covered in grave dirt. hot. the HANDPRINT. HOT. also tangent but this reveal after the s3 finale was WILD back in 2008 I hollered in my dorm room after canvassing for obama. simpler times man
S4 EP 1: cas’ intro scene. the barn. the shadow wings. the hair??? getting stabbed in the chest by the man you just pulled out of hell. getting aaaallll up in that personal space. his little eyebrow. “you don’t think you deserve to be saved.” OUTRAGEOUSLY FLAMING
S4 EP02: “I dragged you out of hell I can throw you back in.” <<< this angel tops. mark dean down as scared and horny etc
S4 EP16: this ENTIRE EPISODE but specifically the part where dean tortures alastair as some kind of foreplay and then alastair kicks his ass. carved you into a new animal. jesus.
S4 EP16: wait I forgot about the part where cas also gets his ass kicked and looks all....hm. dazed and covered in blood while he’s on his knees and about to die. yeah.
S5 EP4: I mean this entire ep is unfairly horny considering everyone is dying of a zombie plague and hasn’t showered in like, 4 years but if I had to pick one hmmm. the dean/dean interrogation scene with the panty kink yeah I know it’s not original but hm. it happened. also misha collins just being able to convey that CAS IS A FLEXIBLE SLUT with a single roll of his shoulders. who SAYS this man can’t act!!!!!
S5 EP18: the ALLEY SCENE. DEAN DOESN’T FIGHT BACK. CAS HOLDS HIM UP OFF THE GROUND AND THEN THROWS HIM ACROSS THE ALLEY. WHY DID EVERYONE THINK CAS COULDN’T TOP. you all had brainworms.
S5 EP18: when cas locks dean in the panic room to stop him from saying yes to michael and “well cas not for nothing but the last person who looked at me like that I got laid” I hate this show. wait I think the blow me cas line is in this episode too what the fuck were they on here
S6 EP5: the scene where dean gets turned into a vampire. between the old dude who I think calls dean a pretty boy (??) and soulless sam....watching??? no ******* but there were just some absolutely foul energies in that scene and I still do not understand WHAT they were thinking
S6 EP20: cas doing a double smite on two demons by slamming them to the ground and then shoving another demon back in its vessel and then smiting him in the same motion. TOP. ENERGY.
S6 EP22: season 6 is possibly cas’ horniest season because he’s like, going through angel puberty after getting his first boner for dean, but the final cas eps are. whoof. cas eats a bunch of souls and proclaims himself to be a new god in order to handle said boner, and then the season ends with cas telling them to bow down and profess their love to him, their new lord, or he will destroy them. note: the way this is framed makes it look like cas is only staring at dean while he says this, even though sam and bobby are also there. the season ends with dramatic zooms on both cas and dean’s faces respectively. this made me actively regret ditching this show after s5 lol
S8 EP??: literally EVERY SINGLE PURGATORY FLASHBACK. cas dean and benny are all purgatory hot in the “pop 10 cranberry pills and risk the UTI” kind of way but also. dean being the hot girl bottom between two tops who hate each other. I really. whew. I need to go take a shower.
S8 EP17: if I get canceled for including the crypt scene on this list I blame you bud. but dean on his knees begging a brainwashed cas to stop killing him WAS sexy. how many times has dean been on his knees in this list wait there’s another one coming up next jsldjfsldkjf
S9 EP2: abaddon getting dean on his knees (YEAH) and pulling his hair and praising him for always coming when called HELLO???? the only thing that ruins this is dean says “I can’t tell if we’re gonna fight or make out” because this is the CW and they won’t let him say fuck
S9 EP6: ah. this entire episode is Emotionally Horny but the horny horny part is when they’re in the car and dean is telling cas to unbutton his shirt and. watches. I know this was on my destiel manifesto but I need it here too
S9 EP9: cas, covered in blood, slitting another angel’s throat and eating his grace after getting tortured. that shot alone made me understand why this website was so goddamn horny for misha collins for nearly a damn decade
S9 EP11: MARK OF CAIN BABEY. cain watching dean beat up a bunch of demons as an audition for taking on the mark, while crowley also is a fucking voyeur to the whole thing. cain is also a hot silver fox with daddy energies. I said what I said
S9 EP 16: dean getting the first blade. he’s chained to a pillar and being menaced by a foppish dandy who wants to add him to his “collection” (WOW). dean then kills him with the blade and whew. murder is sexy sometimes
S9 EP21: dean being pinned against a wall by abaddon’s power, then using the mark of cain to break her hold, calling the first blade to him psychically and then killing her. god the mark of cain is hot
S9 EP23: dean waking up with the demon eyes NUT
S10 EP2: demon dean beating up that dude with the boring backstory and kicking his ass. really was a go on baby I got your flower moment because I hated that dude and I love demon dean
S10 EP3: demon dean being chained up and taunting sam about how his brother is gone, then hunting sam through the bunker. demon dean in general was VERY fun for me, someone who loves trash
S10 EP9: dean going berserk and killing a bunch of pedophile rapists/child abusers. I’m sorry I know this show is trying to preach morality at me about monsters and unnecessary murder and humanity or whatever but we blew past that like 8 SEASONS AGO. also the mark of cain is sexy
S10 EP14: the rest of this list is really gonna be mark of cain stuff isn’t it look I’m here to have fun. cain and dean’s fight. cain continuously tossing his mane of hair back and taunting dean with the picture of what he’s going to become, who he’s going to kill. dean begging cain to tell him that he can stop, and then ultimately killing him. rip daddy.
S11 EP4: again I have not watched this however. every shot of this episode is PRESTIGE TELEVISION because driving a muscle car is sexy. and especially the shot of dean all beat to hell and begging his car to start and giving her a little kiss from his fingers to her dash. ugh. masculinity.
S12 EP10: the bearded salt-and-pepper daddy look returns, only it’s an angel this time and he’s wearing a vest and shirtsleeves and he swordfights with a hot redheaded lady in a suit and an eyepatch. this show is good sometimes!!! and oh fuck lol I just realized this is the same guy who played krissy’s hot hunter dad in s7 probably the first guy who’s hotter as an angel than a hunter. huh.
S12 EP 11: dean riding larry the mechanical bull to “broomstick cowboy.” I have no idea where this factors into the ep but I have seen. the youtube clip
S13 EP23: from what I can tell s13 is way more emotionally horny than boner horny, although dean burning cas’ body was sexy. but the horniest part was dean saying yes to michael and then michael taking over and saying “thanks for the suit.” we are going to ignore the silliest fight scene in existence as well as the final shot ending on a FREEZE FRAME like a goddamn tiktok
S14: not gonna pick a specific moment because I have not watched yet!!! but michael dean is hot. idk why michael is weirdly hot and I cannot stand any iteration of lucifer on this television programme. it should be the reverse but I’m forever an older sibling stan apparently. someone who is catholic could probably explain this better.
S15 EP13: genevieve padalecki and danneel ackles fight flirting as ruby and anael I CANNOT BELIEVE THEY HELD OUT ON THIS TILL THE LAST SEASON
I know I am missing things but this is already an absolutely incomprehensible screed. I know I’m missing shit from the latter seasons but give me time I’m pacing myself

So there’s a really interesting interview with Deborah Pratt here. If you don’t want to pay for it, I’ll paste what I can below, but a few points first.
Deborah says she doesn’t know where Dean is, and says she misses him. I guess she hasn’t had contact with him since he left for NZ? And with Russ Tamblyn saying Dean’s hanging in there in answer to a recent Twitter question, that brings up more questions about his condition.
Deborah claims she came up with the idea of Quantum Leap, which I’ve never seen come up before. Also Don wanted to send Sam home?? I feel like she’s misremembering a lot of details/making herself seem better than she is.
“Theorizing that one could time travel within his own lifetime, Dr. Sam Beckett stepped into the Quantum Leap accelerator and vanished… He woke to find himself trapped in the past, facing mirror images that were not his own, and driven by an unknown force to change history for the better. His only guide on this journey is Al, an observer from his own time, who appears in the form of a hologram that only Sam can see and hear. And so Dr. Beckett finds himself leaping from life to life, striving to put right what once went wrong, and hoping each time tht his next leap will be the leap home…”
The premise of Quantum Leap succinctly and empathetically explained by a voice that spoke to viewers week to week, setting the scene at the opening of the episode. It is a voice that left an indelible print on the show, from its inception to its finale. This is the voice of its Head Writer. No, not Donald P. Bellisario, but a woman of color who was leaps ahead of her time – co-executive producer and uncredited co-creator, Deborah M. Pratt.
Deborah wrote or co-wrote 40 episodes of this sci-fi gem and her authorship of the show runs deep through its five seasons. Aside from the opening narration, Deborah is audible as the voice of Admiral Al Calavicci’s pocket computer, Ziggy. She also guest stars in the episode ‘A Portrait for Troian’ (S2, Ep11) as a grieving widow who hears the voice of her husband calling her.
Deeper still, Quantum Leap was a family affair. It was co-created with her husband at the time, Bellisario, and their daughter, also named Troian, appears as a little girl in ‘Another Mother’ (S2, Ep13, who can not only see Al, but also sees Sam as he really is, rather than as her recently divorced mom.
Prior to helming Quantum Leap, Deborah rose through the ranks as an actress, racing the screen in Happy Days, CHiPS, The Dean Martin Show and many more, and was also a writer on shows such as Airwolf and Magnum P.I. She is a five-time Emmy nominee, Golden Globe nominee and winner of countless other awards. She went on to produce CBS comedy cop show, Tequila and Bonetti, and then to co-create and produce the TV series adaptation of Sandra Bullock tech thriller, The Net. But Quantum Leap was Deborah’s brainchild – one which is emblazoned on the hearts of its faithful fans.
Deborah has since moved into directing, including on hit show Grey’s Anatomy (2020), but was generous with her time when spoke in late 2020 to leap back into the past.
It does seem that you were really ahead of your time as a female head writer and a showrunner in the ’90s, especially in science fiction TV. Was it hard for you to progress and to get Quantum Leap made?
“Usually women were relegated to comedy, very rarely was it drama or heavy drama. It’s changed, finally, with people like Shonda Rhimes (Grey’s Anatomy, Bridgerton, Scandal). But yes, I was a true pioneer, even though I don’t have a ‘created by’ credit, it was a ‘co-created by’ show – with Don. I brought him the original concept, and we were married, and he said ‘Let me just run with this. I can get it made.’ And to his credit, he understands how to tell a story to the audience. He simplified it in a way that you could welcome Quantum Leap into the world. But it was still a tough show to sell.
“I think we went back three times to pitch it to the network. It was complicated to explain. Brandon Tartikoff [the executive] said ‘It’s a great idea – It’s like nothing I’ve ever seen on TV. Let me think about it.’ Then he asked us to come back, ‘I want you to pitch it to me like I’m six years old, then pitch it to me like I’m 80 years old’ and finally he took it. Then even after the show first aired, they decided to introduce that opening where I tell the story. That was created to explain every week to a new viewer what was going on and it worked really well.”
On rewatch now, the best part of three decades later, the show feels groundbreaking in terms of the subjects you cover. Did you feel like you were pushing the envelope?
“I feel we got to do so much on that show. I remember when I did ‘Black on White on Fire’ [S3, Ep7], the networks in the South in the United States wouldn’t air it because it was a black/white relationship. Even though there is no scene where you see a black person and a white person being intimate.
You saw Sam, who was white, and the girl who was white, but because he was playing someone who was black, it was an issue. They wouldn’t air the show in the South. This was around 1992.
“It was challenging for sure. I think we pushed the limits.
“The beauty of the show too, was that it was about hope, which I see so little of on television today. Everything’s so dark, so mean, so vicious, bloody – how many people can you kill? How mean can you make your lead characters and antiheroes. I think it’s why I didn’t work as much afterwards. A) I was a woman, and B) a black woman. There weren’t any black female executive producers that I knew of in drama. I got to do The Net because it had a female lead, but that was almost ten years after Quantum Leap was created. Any show I brought in that had a black lead was never bought, or a female lead, was never bought.
“I remember I wrote a big action piece – like an Indiana Jones, but female-driven, feature film – and pitched it and the studio executive said, ‘Yeah, yeah, but when did the guy come and rescue her?’ And I said, ‘She doesn’t – she rescues him.’ The look on his face. I’ll never forget it as long as I live.”
The show darted around TV schedules, but the fans remained with it, and still to this day hold it dear to their hearts. Was that palpable at the time, or has that grown since?
“I think near the end of the first season, Harriet Margulies [Production Assistant on the show] found a chat room after an episode where people from across the country talked about it and it became the ‘watercooler.’ We were the first television show that had a chat room as a watercooler. Before that, it was literally you going into your office and standing around the watercooler and talking about movies or TV shows you were watching. Suddenly, it was online. So we started to go into the chat room and talk to people about what they liked and what they didn’t. Not necessarily telling them who we were, but that fan base is what kept us on the air because the network didn’t know what to do with us. There was no show like it, so they couldn’t like pair us with anybody.
“In the five years we were on, I think they moved the show six times and the fans still found it, they followed it, they watched it. That’s how we knew we had something unique and special. To this day, I’ll go into a meeting with a young executive who’ll go, ‘I have to tell you, I loved Quantum Leap. I used to watch it with my mom and dad’.”
Scott Bakula was such a great hero and heartthrob as Dr. Sam. What was he like to work with?
“He was so approachable, you know, in the sense that he had this great, easy acting style. He took chances and he was likeable – in a way that he could be a man’s man and a woman’s man at the same time. He’s really a brilliant actor. I am saddened by the fact that he has not had the opportunity to do movies in the way that could really have lifted his career. He’s had an incredibly successful television career. He’s a good actor. He’s a kind man. I’ve always admired him and felt like when we were working together, I had a friend that I loved to write for because he was always so giving and willing and wanting to take chances as an actor. So it was fun to go down to the trailer and say, ‘Guess what? You’re going to be pregnant this week’.
He does everything in the show from sing and dance to baseball, football, hopping over car bonnets to fights and martial arts. Did you know he had such a wide skill set from the outset, or did you write the challenges for him to rise to?
“I think we had conversations with him about that. I also knew that he had been on Broadway doing musicals. I knew he could sing and dance. When I wrote ‘Sea Bride’ [S2, Ep20], I wrote a tango number – that was unique for him. When Don knew that he could play the guitar… We asked Scott, ‘What do you want to do?’ And he said he wanted to do a musical and I think that’s how the ‘Catch a Falling Star’ episode [S2, Ep10] came about, which involves a performance of ‘Man of LaMancha’.”
Admiral Al Calavicci – he’s so much more than wisecracking and surface jokes or flirtation. There’s so much depth to his character. Was that fleshed out early on with an end to end journey for him in mind, or did his character evolve through the seasons?
“It was a little bit of both. Dean Stockwell had been on Broadway at five-years-old and had been a major child movie star. I remember when we wrote the show where Sam had the chance to save Al – ‘The Leap B4, Ep1] – he was so good in that. I’ll never forget how beautiful that was. And then in the very, very end, I love the fact that Sam did change history and Al ended up wih his beautiful wife with five kids.
“I remember once asking Dean, ‘Do you want us to write more drama for you? Big dramatic moments?’ And he said, ‘I want you to look at me right now. I want you to tell me what you see.’ And I said, ‘Well, your performance, the pain, fear and loss and all that, because you’re such an incredible actor.’ And he said ‘For me to perform that, I have to be it and live it. So don’t do too many.’
“He had that depth of acting talent. He is so good – Dean, wherever you are, I love you. I miss you.”
The episodes that follow later in the seasons involving celebrities – Sam as Elvis, Dr. Ruth, or Lee Harvey Oswald, was that kind of a direction that you always foresaw? It feels like a sea change as the show progressed.
“The stories were designed, for the most part, to be so, so simple in that they were everyday stories. They weren’t change-the-world stories. I think the biggest one was Lee Harvey Oswald, and maybe the one involving Marilyn Monroe – those were with people that could have had a ripple effect.
“But there were other little kisses with history in the show, but they were very hard to do. They ran into a child version of Donald Trump in a taxi cab, [‘It’s A Wonderful Leap’ – S4, Ep18], then they ran into a little boy who is supposed to be Michael Jackson – Sam teaches him to moonwalk [‘Camikazi Kid’ – S1, Ep8]. The first time I did a kiss with history was ‘Star-Crossed’ [S1, Ep3] – Sam meets up with the woman that left him at the altar and they’re at the Watergate Hotel. That was fun stuff.”
Sam managed to awkwardly kiss lots of ladies in that sense of ‘Oh God, they’re going to kiss me and I’ve got to be this person, what am I supposed to do.’
“We never, ever really discussed what happened to Sam. We didn’t want him to be encumbered by a relationship. But I didn’t get to kiss him. My husband wouldn’t leave the set on the episode I was in!”
Your move into directing – from your TV drama Cora Unashamed back in 2000, to Grey’s Anatomy just last year. Is that something you wanted to do sooner? Were there barriers prohibiting you?
“I was supposed to direct on Quantum Leap four times. Every time it was coming up, something would happen. The only women who directed on the show were two black women – Debi Allen [Fame, Everybody Hate Chris, Jane the Virgin] and the other was a woman named Anita Addison. They each did two shows.
I said, ‘If I’m not doing this, I want black women.’ There were no other black women. And it was a fight. I tried to get black women directors on the show, but I could never get them past.
Then when I went to do The Net, the studio blocked it. I give huge amounts of credit for executive producing to Shonda Rhimes and what she has been able to do. She did what I thought I was going to be able to do. She’s so talented and I’m such a fan of her and her shows. I’m looking forward to what she’s going to do on Netflix. And it was an honour to do Grey’s Anatomy because I’m a fan of the show and I’m really grateful to have that opportunity.”
Has there been progress in terms of female directors and filmmakers being given opportunities?
“It’s very hard for women because there aren’t a lot of women executives at the studios. There are more now. And so there is an evolution that’s happening, but it still feels slow. There were shows run by people I gave opportunities to back in the day, but when I said, “hey, I want to direct on your show,” the response was, “oh, there’s too much machismo. There’s too many male hormones around here. They’ll eat you alive.” And I went, “no, they won’t, you’ll protect me. How about if I do my job?” And that was only last year. But there are more opportunities. There are more women making decisions, but we have to do more because women’s stories and women’s voices are more than half the population – we need to hear those stories. The historic ones as well as the contemporary ones.”
Is there a leap that was your favourite overall? That you feel made you made your mark with?
“’The Color of Truth’ [S1, Ep7] touched so many people and it opened a dialogue. I remember we got a letter from a teacher who said she brought the VHS in and she played it to her class, up until Jesse [Sam as an ageing black chauffeur in ’50s Deep South] goes and sits down at the counter in the restaurant. Then she stopped it and asked the students what they thought happened next. They thought that he just ordered lunch. And then she played the rest and that hostility and the animosity he endures and the fact that he had to get up and leave really incensed these children. They had never heard of or experienced racism. They didn’t want to believe that it really happened. This is how history gets buried and why television is so powerful and important. It opened a conversation that she could not have necessarily had in her classroom, according to her, had she not brought that show in to share with her students.
“We had another letter that was very moving, and I want to say it might’ve been ‘The Leap Home’ [S2, Ep1-2]. There was a couple who wrote and said they had a child that was on a cancer ward and every Thursday the whole ward would watch Quantum Leap. Their child was dying and they had kind of given up and it was just time to help that child transition out of this world. They watched the show and she said, ‘We realized we gave up hope. When we watched the show, we realized we didn’t have to give up hope and we wanted to write to you. It’s now six months later and the crisis has passed. The cancer is in remission. Our child is up and going back to school. And we just want to thank you for reminding us that hope has its own power’.”
Its power and poignancy has never diminished. Though the final episode, ‘Mirror Image’ (S5, Ep22), with the caption saying Sam doesn’t get to go home, does leave a sucker punch.
“That was our last fight. Don was going to send him home. And I said, ‘You can’t, you can’t send him home. If you ever, ever, which we’ve not ever been able to get Universal to let us do it, want to do a movie… If you want to keep the story going, you have to leave Sam out there in the hearts of people, leaving people thinking he could leap into their lives’. And at first Don said, ‘No, no, we need to bring him home’. And I said, ‘Do not bring him home. Or you will end the show. If you leave the hope out there, that Sam is out there and he could leap into your life and make a difference’. You keep the show alive in the hearts and the minds of the fans. And I think I was right.”
The ending was poetic for me as a viewer, but your point about Sam still being out there – Is there a leap back to the future for Quantum Leap?
“I started writing a project called Time Child about Sammy Jo Fuller. I actually wrote a trilogy in Season 5 where Sam leapt back three times into the same family and the second time he leapt he ended up in bed with this character and conceived a child. Then the third time he leapt in, he met her at 10 years old – a girl named Sammy Jo Fuller. So in my vision, Sammy Jo Fuller grows up. I actually have Al say, ‘Sammy is in the future with me. We’re trying to bring you home.’ That was my set-up way back in 1993, in Season 5, to say someday, Sammy Jo being his daughter might take over….
“This was the ’90s. Women heroes didn’t exist really – other than comic books – Wonder Woman was there, Super Girl was there. But I set it up in the show that Sammy Jo was going to bring him home. Sadly, I have not been able to get Don and the studio to give me the green light for Time Child. It might happen someday.”
Right now, it feels like we need more shows that offer hope. Is there a place for a reboot on streaming platforms?
“Universal keep saying they want to bring it back. They’re not going to give it up to Netflix because they have [US streaming service] Peacock now and still have NBC. I personally think it should be on a full blown network. The hard part would be that it would have to be recast if there was a female version using my character Sammy Jo Fuller. Or if they just redid the show, it would be interesting in the sense that there was such an innocence about the show. I still believe that there is an audience out there that wants it, that longs for looking at the past through the eyes of somebody in the present. But who would that person be if you did the show now, what are those eyes like?
“We’re living in the time of COVID and suddenly you go back in time. How do you warn people that this is going to happen? How do you warn people about 9/11? How do you warn people about things in the future?
“I mean, one of the beauties of that innocence too, and I thought that was a great gift from Don to the concept, was that Sam’s memory as Swiss cheese – he didn’t remember things and that made it a lot easier, and Al was not allowed to tell him what was happening in the present. There’s a lot of detail woven into the mythology that allowed it to be innocent and in the moment of time travel. You didn’t have to drag the future back with you.”
Do you have an actress in mind to play Sammy Jo in a reboot?
“Oh my gosh, Jennifer Garner. I always felt she would be a great female Sam. She’s an ‘every woman.’ She’s funny. She does great drama. When I think of a female Sam or even Sammy Jo, I think Jennifer – in a heartbeat. She’s so great in Alias. That show just never stopped. You couldn’t take a breath. If I had to go younger, somebody that would have that kind of believable humour that you think could actually rescue you – maybe Jennifer Lawrence. She’s pretty formidable in that sense.”
“To bring Quantum Leap back. If they’re thinking about it, now’s the time to happen. Tell people to write to Universal! Write for the attention of Pearlena Igbokwe – if anyone can bring it back, she can do it. Write! Write to Pearlena – she’s the one that’ll make it happen. That’s how we stayed on the air for five and a half years. Fans unite and write!”

I’m late to the top 5 ask game (whoops) but I can’t pass up the chance to read your answers about ouat! Top 5 favorite episodes & top 5 favorite ships (which I’m sure you’ve been asked too many times but I’m always intrigued!) 💛🧡💛
Not late at all! <33 Tysm Renee, I’m always grateful for any asks but especially OUAT related asks :) <3
Fave Episodes:
1. S1 EP20 “The Stranger”
YES I’m bias but what does anyone expect at this point. Season 1 was truly peak OUAT and ohhhhhhh this episode....I’ve definitely said this before but the ‘fixing things’ scene is just my favourite scene in the entire show. The weight that scene holds...uGH. The angst and emotion in this episode is incredible. That scene with Emma and August in the woods is so emotionally charged. We’re coming up to the end of the season at this point and everyone is just reaching their limit. August has tried EVERYTHING at this point and none of it has worked out for him. And so when Emma (who is also at breaking point for very different reasons) just...doesn’t believe and doesn’t break the curse. That’s it. He has nothing left and so he goes to spend his last few days alive with his father. And, despite not knowing that August is his son, Marco still welcomes him with open arms and I won’t ramble anymore but I just love this episode so much oh my god.
2. S2 EP18 “Selfless, Brave and True”
I PROMISE NOT EVERY EP HERE WILL BE AUGUST CENTRIC. But yeah everything in this ep is great minus the awful ending of course. August is so beautifully in character and I’m so happy that we got to see a bit more of his life outside of Storybrooke. The way that this episode showcases both the absolute WORST parts of his character (aka, stealing money from a woman that he thought would die without said money) and the very BEST parts of his character (aka, facing his fears and dying for his trouble) because he’s learnt from his mistakes and has grown and changed....oh...i just love it so much.
3. S6 EP12 “Murder Most Foul”
This probably seems like a strange episode...but hear me out. I swear, I spent 6 seasons being indifferent about David’s character. Don’t get me wrong, I didn’t dislike him (except maybe on my first watch of season 1 because cursed!David is genuinely an idiot and not in an endearing way) but there were just...more interesting characters around him. And then this episode happened. And I feel like we FINALLY got some much needed depth to his character. His speech to Killian at the end is just *chefs kiss*. “What if being Prince Charming isn’t enough?” AIAUGDBUASBYAKSJBN IT WAS JUST SO GOOD. And the OST for that scene just makes it even more emotional. (oh yeah and August is in this ep as well)
4. S4 EP11 “Shattered Sight”
I’m putting this episode here for two reasons. 1. Because some of the fight scenes between all of the characters were hilarious (if ridiculous) and I just loved them all. But 2. Emma and Ingrid. Oh my gosh, talk about an underused character. I always thought that the frozen arc in ouat was...a shame. Because, as someone that LOVES frozen and Elsa, it just would have been so much better without it. That’s not to say that I didn’t enjoy ouat!Elsa (and the other frozen characters) during the season. But the Snow Queen really deserved an arc to herself so they could really flesh her out properly. The fact is that she genuinely loved Emma, and it’s just so heartbreaking that those memories of Ingrid and being loved and cared for were stolen from Emma. The scene, at the fairground, when Ingrid tells Emma that she’s filling in the adoption papers for her have made me tear up on multiple watches, I’m ngl. Comedy and heartbreaking emotion are apparently the two things I love most in an episode of OUAT and this has them both.
5. S2 EP4 “Lady of the Lake”
I was initially gonna try and think of an episode from season 3A to put here (because I love season 3A as a whole) but then I remembered this one scene from this episode and I will never be over it. The episode as a whole...I enjoy, yeah. I love that we get to see Lancelot, Ruth and Mulan (because they’re just some of my fave side characters). But it’s the scene at the end when Emma and Snow are left in the nursery together. And just Emma’s “I’m not used to someone putting me first.” line, followed then by Snow’s “Well get used to it.” <3333
6. S1 EP19 “The Return”
Adding a quick number 6 because I just remembered that “The Return” exists and I can’t not mention it as well. The way this episode is built up...incredible. And, you know, I really did genuinely feel for Rumple. Idk it’s just an episode that when I rewatch ouat I’m like “oooh yes. this is a good ep :)”
I’ve actually just posted my top 5 ships on my sideblog! So hop over there if you’re curious (or I can link you the post directly if you like?) <3 Thank you again and omg I’m sorry for rambling so much I just...I have a lot of thoughts about OUAT

F@TT SPOILERS FOR EPISODE 20! I AM SO PUMPED TO HEAR THE FRIENDS PLAY KINGDOM AGAIN!!! The Kingdom Game Holiday Special from Counter/Weight was an early standout as one of my favorite things F@tt has done. I loved the mechanics of the game so much, and I remember it was the first thing they really did that was fairly GM-less (though they hacked in a GM) and it really brought out a ton of great stuff. The original Kingdom Game still is among my favorite arcs in all of F@tT and I'm so excited for them to bring it back now. I had already been getting vibes from these two downtime episodes that the groups would be mixing and possibly reorganizing following downtime (it felt very similar to some things that were going on in the post-holiday special stuff for TM when they formed the Notion and 20 episodes is halfway to 40 which is the average length of most seasons so far). That said, I was not expecting this, mostly because I have come to accociate switching systems with a holiday special, and it is not the normal holiday season. Also, season 5 did not have this sort of midpoint and I thought maybe they were moving away from this structure. I'm sure I'll have more to say about it after the next episode and I still have to process everything that happened in ep20 but I am just so beyond excited for episode 21!

(Europe-Anon) Me @ Allesand: WHAT THE FUCK?! I. Am. SHOOK. Anyway, the new episode was okay, I guess, though I find the animation style more and more lacking. Sadly. But I'm curious to see where this will lead with Cheerios now going to Eibos (Eidos?) I just don't want to see him turn into some kind of martyr because he did some great jazz with Bahamut. Just leave him alone. How many more episodes to go? 4? 6? Mugaro's farewell to Azazel was so bittersweet especially WHEN YOU LOOK AT THE ENDING
Tumblr media
snb:vs ep20: in defense of alessand
azazel’s face is there bcs i just like his face okay
we have 4 eps left.
I’m a bit conflicted about alessand :’)
on one hand I can’t condone what he did, but I kinda see why he did what he did.
in early eps, aless says he joins the orlean knights bcs of jeanne, but she’s gone by the time he does join. meaning he joins maybe 5-3 years ago.
back then the onyx soldiers obviously hasn’t been promoted and doesn’t have its current status, meaning orleans knights is still the most prestigious order to join if you’re looking for glory.
aless is naive, and pretty much inexperienced, and obviously comes from nobility. he’s also pretty prideful (as shown when he gets angry at kaisar for not doing anything when the onyx soldiers take on the orleans knights status and duty). he may not show it much, but pride and family dignity is still important to him.
he may say he joins the orleans for jeanne, but being part of an elite knights order will sure bring prestige to his family.
bcs of kaisar’s link to rag demon, the orleans loses its status
kaisar attacking the king in ep 8 not only puts him in prison, but it also makes the rest of the orleans knights suspect and put shame over them
kaisar running away together with the rag demon in ep15 kinda cements his status as traitor, and srsly at this point, orlean knights is pretty much kinda over.
aless joins to bring prestige to his family, yet all he gets is shame instead.
diaz may know what’s up with kaisar, but diaz never shares this insight with aless. he coddles him, takes care of him, but he never tells him the truth.
after all that, kaisar does apologize and everything in ep18, and aless somehow agrees after punching him, but at what cost?
aless’ family name is on the line when he agrees to their little rebellion. yet in the party itself, nina doesn’t care one wit about what’s at stake, be it aless’ family or their plan.
nina calls herself aless’ fiance to a guy who knows aless’ family, and yet without any hint of shame she boldly asks the king for a dance - right in front of her so called fiance and the nobles.
aless tries to remedy that by calling her his sister, only to have said sister embrass herself in front of everybody and the king, before getting involved in a plot to murder the king - right in front of everybody.
they all manage to run away of course, but nina is still aless’ sister/fiance for the guests, and it will sure to impact his family later.
when aless is lost, azazel finds him, which is quite a consideration, since it means aless is part of their team.
but then in ep20, everyone is gathering, including sofiel and bacchus, yet none remembers poor aless.
it’s understandable for diaz to not be there since he’s still pretending to be loyal to the king, but the same can’t be said for aless since he admits to the guests that nina is his fiance/sister, making him part of the murder plot too.
him stabbing mugaro is probably his attempt to restore his family name and denounce his involvement in the murder plot.
aaaaand looking at it this way, I really can’t blame him for what he did.
he puts his family on the line, only for them to forget all about him after the fact.
if anything, I’m more suprised he still gives his loyalty to the king after meeting jeanne, his idol, and knowing the holy child is jeanne’s kid.
or maybe that’s exactly bcs of it: jeanne’s supposed to be holy saint, so how dare she have a kid and be human like the rest of them? and in cahoot with the rest of the traitors at that.
while I can’t blame aless, I also can’t condone him bcs mugaro. damn it.
and it’s kinda useless honestly, even if aless go tell the onyx captain he just killed the holy child, without a body as proof it doesn’t mean anything. without him telling the captain of their hideout, it doesn’t mean anything.
Tumblr media
I always thought of aless as a naive crybaby incapable of killing, but damn he’s cold at the end there. I guess he really is a knight after all.
also I really think using alessand is smart choice (Even if this feel a bit out of nowhere) and more interesting than chari or his soldiers doing the stabbing.
this way, you really can’t guess where the story would go (well other than the charinina end part that is)
ps:
I just hope with aless running away at the end there, none’s going to think azazel stabbing mugaro, since the last person to be with mugaro is azazel after all.
rita/kaisar may vouch for azazel since they both know about azazel & mugaro, but i’m unsure about jeanne (but she does thank him for taking care of mugaro tho, so maybe not), and pretty sure sofiel would blame him.
also i’m pretty sure mugaro’s not dead, in one of sato’s tweet was a pic of rita in her doctor getup after all, so maybe that’s that.
(we’ll also *probably* getting a scene where lucifer’s closing his book in the next ep or maybe the next one after)(I’m still wondering why did the director delete the tweet that contains lucifer’s legs? is it too spoilery lulz)
other things:
i really can’t care about the king at all
in ep19 (or 18?) fava says they could just cut the king’s arm to steal his bracelet, and yet in this ep he says they can’t take off the bracelet unless they kill the king? so which is it?
i’m surprised fava is covering up nina/chari relationship. this is… rather naive (?) of him, unexpectedly. rita’s the one who always saves them all in the end and comes up with the plans, so covering this up might be trouble for them later tho… or is he confident enough to ward off any trouble?
nina’s the lead, so why is the bad ugly things always happening to jeanne and azazel tho?
also I wouldn’t blame either azazel or jeanne if they finally have a breakdown and decide to destroy all things now
the title for next ep is vengeance. it’s probably would be about nina trying to exact revenge on chari anyway.

Pokemon Anime - Continuity references in Sun & Moon
Horrible title is horrible.
Ever since Sun & Moon started airing, the fandom seems to have been divided on believing whether or not Sun & Moon is a reboot of the series or not. Well mates, I’ve come to make this post to bring up all the points that point towards continuity, and also try debunking the points that would point for a reboot!
And with that, let us begin! (Since this post is freaking long, I’ll put a cut here.)
Cases that support continuity
1. Ash/Satoshi returns his Kalos pokemon at the start of the show to Oak/Okido’s lab!
Tumblr media
Honestly, we don’t know if it’s his Kalos pokemon, and the number of 5 pokeballs doesn’t match. If it were his Kalos pokemon, he’d have 4 pokeballs since Numelgo/Goodra was left in Kalos. Gekkouga/Greninja’s ball would also possibly not be shown here since it was left in Kalos as well, thou I’d argue that to be only temporary. Although, some people do like to believe that Ash/Satoshi is the kind of trainer that’d keep his pokeballs of released pokemon as sort of a memory, so I guess that’d make sense in this case. However, this isn’t such a great evidence on continuity.
2. Ash/Satoshi mentions his Tauros in EP1!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Straight up reference to his Tauros group that he caught during his Kanto adventures. Sadly it’s the banned episode so not every fan might know this. But this is a very strong evidence on continuity.
3. Ash/Satoshi knows Flabebe!
Tumblr media
In Sun & Moon EP6, Ash/Satoshi mishears Rotom’s word Flámbe as Flabebe. Flabebe is a Kalos native pokemon, and so far hasn’t appeared in any other region even in games, so this would definitely support the continuity!
4. Sonansu/Wobbuffet exists!
Tumblr media
Surely it could be argued that Jessie/Musashi might have got it differently, but its existance is pretty much what supports continuity. IF we go with the reboot theory that suggests Ash/Satoshi only having been to Kanto’s few towns. Sonansu/Wobbuffet was got by Jessie/Musashi during the Johto Saga after all.
5. Ash/Satoshi seems to know about Mega Evolutions!
Tumblr media
In the latest episode of Sun & Moon, EP33, Lana/Suiren teases Ash/Satoshi by saying that she’s gonna go fish up a Mega Gyarodos (At least it’s how I understood the case). Ash/Satoshi doesn’t ask what that is, but instead says he didn’t know you can fish up something like that. (Alas, you can’t, Lana/Suiren trolled him here <3) This would suggest that Ash/Satoshi has indeed been to Kalos, since Mega Evolutions debuted there. Although, it could be argued that Mega Evolutions would exist in Kanto as well in supposed new timeline, but I don’t really see that as a possibility. Then again, it’s just me.
6. Ash/Satoshi knows the move Aqua Jet!
Tumblr media
Once again in the newest episode of Sun & Moon, EP33, Popplio learns a new move, Aqua Jet. Ash/Satoshi immidiately recognises the move! Aqua Jet is a move that debuted in 4th generation, and from his previously owned pokemon, only Buysel and Oshwatt know this move. Of course it could be argued that some Kanto pokemon he’s encountered before might have known this move in new timeline, but again, I don’t find that claim so good. This for me is strong evidence on continuity.
Now, these are the continuity references I could think of right of the pat. Now let’s start debunking some cases that people take as a sign of reboot.
Cases that would apparently support reboot
1. Ash/Satoshi acts and sounds more like a child in Sun & Moon than in XY(&Z), it must be a reboot!
Tumblr media
This is something I constantly see as an excuse for stating Sun & Moon to be a reboot. Honestly, it’s not a very strong excuse and I could give out many reasons for Ash/Satoshi to act like he is in Alola. First, Alola’s a vacation resort, people tend to go there to relax. Second, at the moment the series is very lighthearted and nothing serious has been going on, so there’s no reason for Ash/Satoshi to not live like the 10+ year old kid he is! Kalos on the other hand had lots of serious stuff going on. Although he was sort of a kid there too at times.
This exact same argument was apparently used when Best Wishes! aired as well, and that reboot theory turned out to be bollocks (2nd season was filled with continuity, and apparently so was first episode. I always miss this reference :D)
Also! Even if there hasn’t been that many fights in Sun & Moon at this point, the fights that have been shown to it’s fullest have shown that Ash/Satoshi is still very skillful strategist, like he was in XY(&Z). Best examples I’d say at the moment are the trials in Melemele Island.
2. Ash/Satoshi forgot about Nurse Joys being the same again! It must be a reboot!!
Oh boy. This is something I actually understand people using as an excuse, but, I’ve come up with an explanation that can be used to debunk this. Be prepared, this section is long!
First of all, let’s take a look at the looks that Nurse Joy has.
Tumblr media
Nurse Joy looked the same throughout the journey from Kanto to Sinnoh. Satoshi had no reason to think that Nurse Joy would have different rules in these regions.

In Hoenn, it was May/Haruka who questioned this. (Then Brock/Takeshi goes on telling about the little details that differinate all Joys from each other.)

In Sinnoh it was Dawn/Hikari. However...
Tumblr media
Nurse Joy got it’s first official redesign in Unova. It’s also where Ash/Satoshi got confused about Nurse Joys again after a long time.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
...wait a minute.
Tumblr media
WAIT A MINUTE!
Tumblr media
HE ACKNOWLEDGED IT! He did in the end realise that the same rule from before applies here too! Wow. Who said he didn’t recognize Nurse Joy “clone” thing in Best Wishes! in the first place?!
...moving on!
Tumblr media
Nurse Joy received yet another redesign in Kalos. Sure, you guys must be thinking that wait, Ash/Satoshi wasn’t questioning this in XY, it was Serena, but just you wait:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Serena may have asked about it but see, Ash/Satoshi wasn’t certain here. I think this was also the first time Ash/Satoshi meets Joy in Kalos so Serena beat him on questioning this.
Now onto the case that is Sun & Moon:
Tumblr media
Once again, Nurse Joy received yet another redesign in Alola. (My personal favourite design btw.) She hasn’t appeared much in Sun & Moon, but when the group moved onto the Akala Island in EP31, this happened:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I think that judging from those two previous cases we can say that whenever Ash/Satoshi reaches a new region, and Joy has a new design, he is not, I repeat, not certain that the same rules apply. So, I debunk this evidence for reboot theory as false!
(I’m so sorry this Nurse Joy section is so long. I just had a lot to say for this.)
3. XYZ didn’t end with the usual “Next time, a new beginning”, but instead it said “And to our own Way”. It must mean XYZ ended that timeline and Sun & Moon is a reboot!
Tumblr media
I don’t know what to say to this claim. Maybe they just wanted to change the sentence to this one here instead. I don’t see it as a proof for XYZ ending it’s timeline in any way thou. I mean come on, they left his goal undone. That’d be horrible way to end a series. I highly believe in what I just stated before: they just wanted to use another sentence this time.
4. The anniversary episode EP20 didn’t mention any of the past adventures! Reboot!
Hmmmmmm. This is just a lousy evidence. Sorry. The episode focuses on the bond that Ash/Satoshi and Pikachu has and have had since the first day they met in Masara Town. It was also a good episode that showed that they CAN handle themselves with just the two of them.
Also, the series was just beginning at that point, newer viewers wouldn’t know what the heck he’s talking about if he had mentioned previous regions or friends. This show focuses on introducing the Alola region and it’s people at this point after all. I know how upset people were at this, and I get why, but I also understand from story point why it wasn’t relevantly needed.
And that’s it! This post is already freaking long so I think I’ll stop this here, since I can’t think of anything more at this point. If any of you can think of some more evidence for continuity, or want me to debunk another reboot theory evidence, fire away!
Hope you enjoyed reading this! Smiling Performer, aka Aleira, signing off!

So I watched s2 ep20 of Shadowhunters. and wow. here we are at the finale. I knew it was gonna be pretty intense, and I wasn't disappointed. A lot of things payed off and everything was wrapped up quite nicely. 10/10 that was a lot of fun. (overall, this season gets a solid 8.5/10 for such a vast improvement in both story + overall quality.
(as always, spoilers below the cut + book plot speculation)
First off, it was so so so satisfying seeing Valentine die in that ep. And having Clary kill him too was so excellent. I loved her so much and it’s great to see her grow up so much over this season.
I mean, it’s sad a lot of it was to with her loss, but I’m so happy to see her become such an excellent shadowhunter and really grow into herself. It’s so great to see. :’)
Also, I was surprised that they led with Sebastian being not quite dead yet - I thought they’d leave that at maybe the end of the episode, but I like it. The teaser at the end w/ who I presume is Lilith is pretty interesting.
I’m a lot less familiar with the plot of books 4 - 6 (mostly bc I’ve only read them once. I might’ve read city of fallen angels a couple times, but I’m not too sure). Though I do remember a lot of what happened anyway. I was way deep into the book fandom. So it’ll be interesting to see this next season going forward.
And speaking of the books can I just say the scene with Jace dying + the cuts back to Alec were fucking excellent and the right kind of “fuck you” to the books where Alec literally didn’t feel a damn thing.
(and speaking of Alec the reunion with him and Magnus at the end was so lovely and some Pure Gay Love™ shit right there).
Next season tho, I am so keen to see how the Simon stuff plays out too - that was an interesting move and it’s not book material so I’m curious to see how that’ll play out and when the mark of cain will come into the story. Maybe during this Seelie stuff.
And the stuff with Molly and Luke too - that was left hanging and I’m curious to see what might happen next with this. There’s something interesting there and since Molly is an OC Shadowhunters creation she’s a lot more interesting to me bc she’s all tv show.
But yeah, a solid season and I’m so impressed with how much this show has improved overall since the camp as fuck pilot. It’s a good time.
