hi! read your long public transit rant that you responded with to someone a while back. i partially disagree ! and im making it your problem <3
ill try to account for your arguments being made specifically in the american context but i will fail becuase i am tired and ill and europe ian and silly and am responding from my memory of reading it 10 minutes ago now
firstly: you claim introduction of buses would necessitate widening of roads, would risk bus breakdowns, and would create a harmful reliance in rural areas. 1. a person in a bus means a person not in a car. if i remember correctly in america an average car trip will involve 1.2 - 1.6 people in the car? a bus then needs to carry around 4 passengers to take up less road surface ! public transit is regularly suggested and implemented by people smarter than i as a measure against congestion. the roads will not need widening. 2. breakdowns, while potentially impactful are... such an edge case? sure, even if the average american is, say, even 1.5 times heavier than any european country. that simply doesnt matter? even if it was a problem, theres no way american buses wouldnt be ordered from an american firm, where a Tiny portion of the environmental benefits can be traded for a bus that is up to that task. 3. the first thing id like to say is: no one would Ever, ever here, suggest public transit to 100% replace cars. especially in rural areas, people will simply continue to have cars. taxis and ridesharing services may shrink, but theyll always be there in a pinch. most times transit is advocated for, it isnt in rural areas anyway. one of the main trouble points with cars is the large necessity for parking space in cities, and that in many places, the average car trip is comedically short, and is only taken for lack of a better option. both are problems transit easily solves, alongside myriad other benefits. removing this large parking requirement can allow for greater density, better land use, and easier transition to walkabilty, which is usually the ultimate goal.

first, as for the money: yes! you are right ! amercia has no monry for anything! not healthcare not road maintenance not science ! thats not the trains fault ! but the humble asphalt road is far worse. its attacks on your nations budget are multipronged: a. car dependency leads to the need for quite a few, and alongside zoning laws, creates very many low density suburbs that must all have city funded services, including the roads. so low density, that many wealthy culs de ballsack are actually a net loss in tax revenue ! with less asphalt (and better zoning) cities would readily have more money to spend, by way of having to maintain smaller utilities networks, which service the same or more people ! 2. asphalt road is cheap to build and a bitch to maintain. so much so, that it is a constant drain on treasuries, to such an extent that more constantly needs to be built to try and scrounge up more tax revenues to pay for ehat is already there.google "growth ponzi scheme".
2. maintenance! thats simply not true. a high initial investment is needed for trains, yes, but maintenance? generally, a wellbuilt track's maintenance schedule involves a semiregular visit by and engineering car to ensure the track is intact, which is a few salaries and a pitance of electricity, and a track replacement every few decades, which is considerably cheaper than what and asphalt road seeing similar ridership would need.

I'm not going to lie to you when I said I skimmed to this. And the reason is because you clearly need to go back and read my post.
The United States actually has some degree of public transportation. But the post that I was responding to in one of those posts, did not state that we would have to widen the roads if we introduced buses. We actually already have public buses. In most cities. Hell since it is even have trolleys. Some I'm actually have both. My statement was more towards if we got rid of vehicles which they wanted to outside of public transport, We would have to increase the amount of buses. That would facilitate a need to make wider roads in general. Unless you created an entire fleet of short buses, which would in turn actually make things worse as far as traffic.
You are so vastly underestimate the size of the United States in the amount of money that it would be required to maintain public infrastructure such as public transportation across states. Also you ignore the amount of damage that it would need to be done to upend a lot of different locations especially those of rural types. What's more, American natural disasters have to be taken into effect in regards to this maintenance. And further still the initial investment needs to be able to happen.
So what I would strongly suggest is doing yourself a favor and reading into the abject failure that was the high speed rail that California was supposedly attempting to make and has spent I think north of a billion dollars on and if not even gotten an entire mile done. So I would go back to my post, whichever one it may be, reread what I said with an open mind and try to understand where I'm coming from. Because it sounds like you read what I wrote while trying to come up with a rebuttal. Rather than attempting to understand what I was explaining.

Though domestic fossil fuel production reached record levels under Joe Biden, his policies to boost renewable energy still sparked fear among oil and gas companies, said Mark Jones, a political scientist at Rice University in Houston, Texas. “There was a threat of moving toward a net zero world … maybe not now, but there was an idea that would happen if Democrats stayed in the White House,” said Jones.
For Warren and other oil billionaires, Trump removed that fear, Jones said.
Energy Transfer Partners reported a year-over-year increase in profits in the first quarter of this year. In an earnings call last month, company top brass praised the new administration and more supportive regulatory environment.
Among Trump’s moves that have benefited the company: a day-one move to end Biden’s pause on liquefied natural gas exports, which enables Energy Transfer to proceed with a long-sought-after LNG project in Lake Charles. On 13 May, Trump’s Federal Energy Commission (Ferc) also granted a three-year extension for the LNG project, which the company said was necessary for the project to succeed.
Since that Ferc decision, Energy Transfer Partners has also secured a 20-year deal to supply a Japanese company with up to 1m metric tons of LNG a year.
Other Trump orders to “unleash American energy” and declare an energy emergency to promote fossil fuels despite already booming production, for instance, are set to benefit Energy Transfer Partners by making it easier to expand the use all kinds of fossil fuels, thereby boosting the demand for pipelines.
Also fueling that demand: the projected boom in datacenters. Energy Transfer Partners has received requests to power 70 new ones, the Guardian reported in April, marking a 75% rise since Trump took office.
In the week after the Ferc decision, Warren’s wealth rose by nearly 10%, noted Sarah Cohen, who directs the climate and wealth inequality-focused non-profit Climate Accountability Research Project (Carp).
By appointing fossil fuel-friendly officials to top positions, such as the former energy CEO Chris Wright to head the energy department and the pro-oil and -gas Doug Burgum to the interior department, Trump has also “showed his allegiance to companies like Energy Transfer Partners”, said Cohen.
“They’re really creating this environment that’s great for oil and gas,” she said. “The message is ‘We’ll give you what you want.’”
Warren ranks among the richest 500 people in the world, with Forbes placing his net worth at $7.2bn. He has long deployed his wealth to support the GOP, including by becoming the 13th-largest corporate funder to Trump’s Make America Great Again Super Pac last year with a $5m donation.
The pipeline mogul accumulated most of his wealth from Energy Transfer Partners, which owns and operates about 130,000 miles of energy infrastructure in the US. In recent months, the firm has been criticized by advocates for its successful lawsuit against the environmental non-profit Greenpeace, which in March yielded a verdict that threatens to bankrupt the organization.
Warren has long enjoyed a relationship with the president, donating generously to his first campaign and attending closed-door meetings during his first term. Though Warren is not known to have attended the infamous May 2024 meeting during which Trump asked oil bosses for $1bn and pledged to overturn environmental rules, he did co-host a fundraiser for the president in Houston weeks later.
He is one of a handful of the most powerful oil billionaires from Texas, where there are no limits on contributions to candidates and political committees.
“Texas has always been kind of a testing ground for the most extreme politics and issues that the Republicans pursue,” said Matt Angle, founder of the Lone Star Project, a Democratic Pac in the state. “In Texas, people like him are used to being able to donate to get their way.”
The reconciliation bill, which the House passed last month and the Senate is now debating, is also expected to be a boon to Energy Transfer Partners and Warren. Known as the “one big beautiful bill”, it is expected to slash Biden-era incentives for renewable energy, tamping down competition in the energy market.
A number of more esoteric provisions in the bill will also prove beneficial for the company, according to a review by Carp shared with the Guardian. One provision in the House-approved version, for instance, would allow the Department of Energy to determine that a proposed LNG export facility is in the “public interest” if the applicant pays $1m – something Energy Transfer Partners could afford to do. It’s a “pay to play” scenario, said Carp co-founder Chuck Collins.
Other provisions would expedite the build-out of LNG export infrastructure, force the government to hold lease sales for fossil fuels even when demand is low and reverse protections to allow drilling in some areas without any judicial review. Still others would stymy federal agencies’ ability to implement new climate rules by requiring that major changes obtain congressional approval, allow gas developers to pay a $10m fee to bypass permitting processes, limit who can bring lawsuits over gas infrastructure and allow firms to pay taxpayers less to use public land, Carp found.
The bill is also set to hand fossil fuel companies huge tax breaks – including by extending tax cuts in the Trump-backed 2017 reconciliation bill, from which Energy Transfer Partners reported a tax benefit of $1.81bn.
Under Trump, Energy Transfer Partners will also probably save money on pipeline safety compliance. Since the president re-entered the White House in January, enforcement from the Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration has dropped. Across the pipeline industry, the PHMSA opened only four enforcement actions in April, and zero in March – marking the first month since the subagency’s 2004 launch when no cases were initiated, E&E News reported.
In March, Energy Transfer Partners also sued the PHMSA, claiming that its enforcement system is “unconstitutional”. Success in the suit could mean the company is forced to pay fewer penalties.
Another Trump policy from which Energy Transfer Partners will benefit: an exemption for oil and gas from his new tariffs. The president provided the industry wide shield after a meeting with the American Petroleum Institute lobby group, of which Warren’s company is a member.

The physicist has some awkward facts for those that are pushing EV’s - because they are somehow environmentally friendly – they aren’t. Even if half of all cars on the roads become EV’s, they will reduce CO2 emissions by just 10%. In the meanwhile, each 1,000-pound car battery requires the mining 500,000 pounds of rock – and the processes used to extract, refine and create a chemical battery require a lot of fossil fuels. The lithium in a lithium io battery is a tiny fraction of the battery – the rest s made up of all sorts of metals ores and minerals.
Oh, and the Inflation Reduction Act subsidised each EV with 30,000 bucks and the manufacturers of EV’s are still losing 50,000 bucks per EV.
The hypocrisy of raping the earth “over there” so the smug can virtue signal and say “look how green we are” is matched only by the ugliness and cost of “renewable” energy AND the actions of “green” countries like Norway and Australia that export “fossil fuels” to the EU and China – and pretend they aren’t contributing to CO2 missions.
And that is quite aside from the fact that there is no climate crisis or CO2 issue I the first place.
Smug and stupid is, as smug and stupid does.

one of the reasons im so cynical about things like electric cars and slow fashion retailers is because reusing what already exists will always be better for the environment than creating brand new “eco friendly” things… its a marketing ploy most of the time and also i feel like a lot of peoples relationship with so called environmentalism is vibe based… ie they like the feeling of driving an electric car bc it feels like theyre doing something good when in reality it wouldve probably done more net good to buy a 20 year old gas car and then walk/bike ride some days when possible… same with clothes and other consumer products

As socialists, we need people to believe real, positive change is possible. Most people can’t see beyond the current system, but they can tell that it is broken. This leads to hopelessness and apathy. Complacency. I believe real change is possible, but change is not on the ballot this election, or indeed any election (except, perhaps, negative change: a cancelling of the meagre improvements to the social safety net added in the past few years under a potential conservative government, and international trade leading to the disempowerment of workers - whether that be in the form of a return to free trade or a continuation of these new tariff policies). The conservatives offer suffering, the liberals no relief, and the NDP the smallest of reforms. Socialists must be the ones who offer real change for working people. Let’s look into the failures of each of the 3 major parties.
Firstly, conservatives don’t only want to maintain the system, they want to make it worse - on an accelerated course. They’d cut from healthcare and possibly eliminate dentalcare, pharmacare, and childcare entirely. Conservatives believe cutting taxes is an affordability measure - rather than a give away to the rich. They have no plan for climate change whatsoever and are endorsed by billionaires - both Canadian and American. They hate unions, they hate the poor, the hate those who are addicted to substances or who cannot find shelter. They want to make life harder for the masses so the rich can exploit us harder. They’ve promised to repeal labour-friendly legislation, privatize more infrastructure, and weaken regulations around dangerous industries — all while offering up hollow culture war distractions to keep people divided and misinformed. Their base is kept loyal through fear and resentment, but their donors are loyal because the Conservatives deliver: lower corporate taxes, deregulation, and union-busting. Their political project is one of austerity and authoritarianism: dismantling public services, criminalizing dissent, and gutting environmental protections. While they talk about "freedom" and "choice," their policies concentrate power and wealth into the hands of corporations and the ultra-rich.
On the other hand, we’ve lived under the liberals for nearly 10 years, and things haven’t gotten better. Rent has gotten more expensive because liberals side with landlords and speculators over working people who need a place to live. Food has gotten more expensive because liberals side with big grocery chains ripping us off over the right of people to eat, and it’s not like farm workers are paid well in return. In fact, the UN recently called the temporary foreign workers program, which the agricultural sector gets the most permits for, a "breeding ground for contemporary forms of slavery." Other essentials like telecommunications have also become more expensive, as the liberals side with monopolies over people, as demonstrated by allowing Rogers and Shaw to merge. All of this while they lie and flip flop on the issue of the day, whether it be climate action or Palestinian liberation. Let us not forget, the liberal government under labour minister Steven Mickenen (now reassigned to “jobs and families”) broke 3 strikes (or 4, depending how you count it) using section 107 of the labour code last year: the rail workers in august, dockworkers in November, and the postal workers in december. Carney hasn’t shown any sign of changing this - much the opposite. He worked for Goldman sachs in the 1990’s and early 2000s - right when jeffery sachs was “advising” the post-soviet economies, otherwise known as crushing the solidarity movement in poland and helping yeltsin and his cronies sell off the state in russia. He’s more recently worked at brookfield - a corporate landlord and tax dodger, among other things, which recently announced that “the future is debt” - meaning they make money off of the suffering of the working class by burying them in debt. As prime minister, his first moves have been lowering the capital gains tax and a cabinet shuffle which seems to get rid of important positions like disability minister and gender equality minister - now subsumed into steven guilbeau’s culture ministry, and rename a whole set of ministries (including labour) into the portfolio of “jobs and families” and give this important position, now with a less pro-labour framing (not that the liberals were ever pro-labour, as discussed before) to everyone’s least favourite minister and strikebreaker in chief: steven mickenin.
So what really makes a liberal government different from a conservative? The record shows… not much, with the two parties voting together to block progressive reform over 600 times between 2004 and 2021, according to the breach. Their policy consensus includes “huge tax breaks to corporations, a punitive criminal justice system, a less generous social welfare state, a restrictive immigration system, a hugely profitable private pharmaceutical regime, pro-corporate trade deals abroad, and opposition to expanding workers’ rights.” Under Paul Martin, this came in the form of blocking anti-scab legislation, which has now been forced through by the NDP, more restrictive immigration rules and less accessible EI, maintaining unsafe federal workplaces by refusing to ban “psychological harassment,” and siding with pharmicetical companies over people who require medicine to live. Under stephen harper, the party duopoly agreed to refuse to enforce safe practices by the rail companies, allow pollution, maintain the right of the defense minister to authorize offensive overseas missions without the approval of parliament, refuse to give lighter sentences to young people, refuse to compensate those who’s employer robbed them by not contributing to their pension, passing back to work legislation (which the Harper government used many times, including against workers at Air Canada, Canada Post, and CP Rail), advancing free trade, passing bill C-51 (the anti terrorism bill), lowering the capital gains tax (which the liberal government undid and then re-did), passing the “Zero Tolerance for Barbaric Cultural Practices Act” (bet you didn’t know the liberals voted for that one), and refusing to increase safety standards for pregnant or nursing employees. Under the trudeau government (up to 2021), they refused to coordinate a strategy to end poverty, refused to guarantee housing as a right, continued selling weapons abroad (tanks to the Saudis and bombs to Israel etc.), refused to expunge records for past crimes relating to (now legal) cannabis, refused to enforce international law, allowed for discrimination based on “social condition” (which I think means class?), failed to adequately regulate commercial fishing, refused to commit to paris climate goals, refused to establish national pharmacare (now partially pushed through by the NDP), allowed the Canada Pension Plan to invest in unethical businesses including ones which do not meet basic environmental or workers’ rights standards, refused to establish national dentalcare (now partially pushed through by the ndp), and refused to establish a wealth tax or provide affordable telecommunication services. This long record shows what we’ve always known to be true: liberal, tory, same old story.
If not liberals or tories, why not the NDP? The NDP claims to be the party of the working class. They do not fill this role effectively, and they are losing ground in the polls because they cannot offer a real alternative to capitalism, instead framing themselves as slightly nicer liberals who will expand pharmacare and EI: good ideas, but not nearly enough. The NDP plays a frustrating and contradictory role in Canadian politics. On the one hand, they have used their position to push through partial wins — the early stages of pharmacare and dental care being key examples, as well as anti-scab legislation. On the other, their refusal to break with liberalism in any meaningful way makes them appear weak and directionless. Instead of mobilizing the anger and desperation many working people feel, they seek to temper it — framing small reforms as radical change while avoiding confrontation with the wealthy. They speak the language of justice but fear the consequences of acting on it. Even within their own party, there’s a tendency to sideline grassroots voices in favour of PR consultants and central office messaging. This alienates not just the left, but ordinary people who are tired of being pandered to without being listened to. If the NDP cannot define itself against both the liberals and the conservatives — if it cannot imagine and fight for a world beyond capitalism — it risks irrelevance, even as conditions worsen.
So what of the election? I do recommend voting to avoid the worst (for example, i’ll be voting for Elizabeth May next week when advance polling opens even though I don’t particularly like her or the green party) - but that is a minimum “action”, and cannot be the extent for our politics. The liberals are winning because they’re the “rally around the flag” party. Carney can get away with offering less because people are scared of Trump and American dominance in international trade - which is a real problem. But the problem isn’t america, or americans, most of whom are working class people just like in Canada and every other nation, but the american bosses and corporations who seek to take over every industry everywhere they can with the cheapest labour available. And due to this newfound (especially among liberals) nationalism, people forget the enemy at home. People cheer for loblaws and SNC lavalin (or whatever they call themselves now) as brilliant examples of Canadian industry. Company groups appear on the news - sometimes next to union representatives - in a disgusting display of class collaborationism against the perceived enemy. Canada needs neither an election nor a trade war - it needs a socialist revolution to bring true democracy and true freedom to the Canadian worker, and eventually, the workers of the world.

I've been having thoughts of a roblox game concept "FAILSAFE" ,,, mostly ramblings down below ,,, might make concept art for it too
The game takes inspiration, setting-wise, from flee the facility, area 51 games, and "hmm..." . I'm also slightly inspired off of other games like something evil will happen, doors and pressure, forsaken, lethal company, repo, SCP containment breach, etc
The main idea of the game centers around a lockdown science facility that had a containment breach of some sort, leading to all sorts of monsters wreaking havoc. I imagine it'd be a sort of "survive the waves" type of game, where you see how far you can go? Maybe there's main objectives to complete for additional rewards/progress/levels? Something along the lines.
The characters are going out of their way to face the dangers in order to retrieve various resources to bring back home, like food, materials, etc. and also to wipe out as many monsters if possible so they have better chances of escaping the facility (dare i say . fleeing the facility)
The character ideas, so far, are:
The Intern - starter character, no downsides or upsides, a jack-of-all-trades who had all this happen literally on his first day bless his heart. Starts with nothing, has a high running speed, maybe able to craft improvised weapons using less material than others? I like to think one of his passive abilities is being able to dodge a potentially lethal attack once per wave
The imprinted - a really weak and cowardly scientist who incidentally had one of the experiments, a drakobloxxer, imprint onto him when it hatched. The drake (probably with some affectionate moniker) is friendly to survivors and acts like a tank for the group, but requires food and healing a lot more than the average survivor. Lore-wise, I imagine he has some sort of health issue that prevents him from being a good fighter (maybe has to walk with a cane?). the Drakobloxxer operates on AI, but will follow commands. If the imprinted dies, Drakobloxxer remains, but refuses to eat and takes no orders. Can be pet between rounds.
The janitor - a slightly mysterious janitor who usually flies under the radar. Much more stealthy than other survivors, I like to imagine he has access to maps. Able to go through vents in order to get through objectives easier
The engineer - on-sight fixer-upper that got caught up in all this. You likely guessed by his name, but he's able to build various structures, some entirely unique to him, otherwise able to construct structures faster and for less materials than the rest. Also able to do certain tasks quicker
The doppleganger - A sentient pile of flesh that was intended for cloning purposes. When using their ability, they're able to copy another player's abilities. They're unable to change it again until a cooldown of a minute, but otherwise they're free to keep the taken abilities for the whole game if they wanted. Their other ability includes disguising themselves as other monsters and using a few of their powers/attacks, for purposes like defeating them or luring them away . based off of the freaky clone copy from regretevator . still learning to speak properly
The warden - Meelee version of the containment officer. Big burly fella, also another tanky character. I'm not actually too sure on him yet lol . He seems like a very gruff and stern guy but is actually quite friendly
The containment officer - ranged and less friendly version of the warden . uses a tranquilizer and rifle, as well as being able to deploy stun traps like nets that are meant to be used alongside her weapons.
The safety regulator - World's best OSHA employee who was sent in to review the site due to many rumors of malpractice. Immune to most forms of environmental damage, very tanky, and their active ability includes setting down a flare beacon that can stun enemies (might change this ,,)
The field medic - was meant to be part of the rescue team from outside, now locked inside the facility. They were raised in the military, but he's also kind of emotionally stunted so he comes across as a bit mean/blunt during interactions.
The chemist - A very disgruntled scientist who badly wants her promised coffee break. Spawns with, and able to make, various explosives and concoctions (e.g tear gas, smoke bombs, molotovs, etc). I like to think she has burn scars across her body
The radio operator - uses a screen/some sort of tablet that connects to the speakers, thus allowing her to broadcast warnings to the team. Maybe able to use cameras and reveal significant positions of monsters/items?
The "waves" in the game, I imagine, are counted by if all objectives are complete, to which the next wave progresses by moving into the next chunk of the facility (e.g a map change) that'd randomly generate.
As for the actual monsters, I imagine there's redundant bug-like ones that serve as common enemies, and then there are more complex ones that serve a slightly bigger threat (e.g like. imagine the lizards from rainworld)
Each significant wave (10, 20, 30, and so on) there is a unique boss encounter for each round. I'm kind of blank on any bosses just yet, but one of the ideas I did have so far is the rest of the Drakobloxxers, divided between the big momma (slow and heavy hitting) and the kids/scouts (fast and slightly weaker, have a chance of scampering away when damaged too much)
I like to think there'd also be some sort of merchant-esq character every few floors (5,15,25, and so on).
Between that, there's also the main lobby which is the hub the survivors and a few npcs are currently holed up in. It's in this safety bunker-esq area, and I imagine entering a game is through an elevator? (Large enough to include the imprinted's drakobloxxer,,,)

Report hails benefits of the EU's multi-billion-euro environmental action
A cost-benefit analysis by the European Commission says nearly €3.5 billion of EU money pumped into real-world environmental schemes through the LIFE programme gave a tenfold return on investment – justification, green groups say, for massively ramping up spending.
The EU’s flagship environmental protection scheme has improved the conservation status of 435 species while cutting greenhouse gas and nitrogen oxides (NOx) pollution, producing a tenfold return on the €3.46 billion invested in the seven years to 2020, the European Commission has claimed in a review of the last budget period.
The LIFE programme is the only European instrument which directly funds environmental action on the ground, with the 1,167 projects supported during the 2014-2020 period, ranging from ‘traditional’ projects like boosting vulture populations in the mountains between Greece and Bulgaria to supporting policy makers in redesigning the EU emissions trading system, which sets a cap for industrial carbon emissions.
Energy saved amounted to the average energy consumption of nearly a million European households, while carbon dioxide was cut by 11.8 million tonnes a year, equivalent to the net annual emissions of Cyprus, according to the report published on Thursday (1 August).
The yearly production of NOx, another greenhouse gas which is also linked to respiratory illness, was cut by around 152,000 tonnes – more than Portugal emitted in 2019, the EU executive noted.
A relatively small proportion of the funding was used to co-finance the purchase of 3,127 square kilometres of land at a cost of €83m, helping to expand the Natura 2000 network of protected areas, which covered some 18.6% of the EU’s land mass by 2021, according to the European Environmental Agency (EEA).
“LIFE contributed to the overall objective of moving towards an environmentally friendly economy that uses resources wisely, lowers carbon emissions, and can withstand climate changes, as well as protecting and improving the environment,” the report concludes.

The nature-friendly farming budget is set to be slashed in the UK spending review, with only small farms allowed to apply, it can be revealed.
Sources at the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) confirmed the post-Brexit farming fund will be severely cut in the review on 11 June. It will be part of a swathe of cuts to departments, with police, social housing and nature funding expected to face the brunt.
Labour promised a fund of £5bn over two years, from 2024 to 2026, at the budget, which is being honoured, but in the years following that it will be slashed for all but a few farms.
The nature-friendly farming fund is a package of payments that replaced the EU’s common agricultural policy and paid land managers for the amount of land in their care, with the aim of paying farmers to look after nature, soil and other public goods, rather than simply for farming and owning land. Many farms rely on these payments to make ends meet.
Defra is understood to be focusing the money on areas that it has mapped out as having the best potential for nature, such as the uplands, and paying farmers not to cultivate on peat soil. Defra sources said the scheme will be targeted at “small farms”; wealthier farmers will not be eligible, meaning larger farms will be locked out of nature-friendly farming incentives.
Environmental groups fear that along with the planning and infrastructure bill, which removes nature protections from areas that were previously protected under the EU, nature will decline.
In Europe, the common agricultural policy is being overhauled to include some payments for nature. Now it is feared British farms will have to intensify production to make ends meet as the post-Brexit subsidies are stopped completely for some landowners.
It is understood ministers will argue farming profitability will be boosted during this period, and that the new nature restoration fund created by the planning and infrastructure bill will provide private investment for nature-friendly farming.
Biodiversity net gain rules for developers are also expected to be watered down after the Ministry of Housing and Local Government launched a review into the efficacy of developers creating space for nature when they build houses. Under the plans, development sites as large as 49 houses could benefit from simplified rules. At the moment, developers have to provide a 10% uplift for nature on the sites they build on.
