Canada has long been a draw for people from India's Punjab province seeking new opportunities elsewhere. But has the Canadian dream soured?
It's hard to miss the ardour of Punjab's migrant ambitions when driving through its fertile rural plains.
Billboards promising easy immigration to Canada, Australia, New Zealand and the UK jut out through ample mustard fields.
Off the highways, consultancies offer English language coaching to eager youth.
Single-storey brick homes double up as canvasses for hand-painted mural advertisements promising quick visas. And in the town of Bathinda, hundreds of agents jostle for space on a single narrow street, pledging to speed up the youth's runaway dreams.
For over a century, this province in India's northwest has seen waves of overseas migration; from the Sikh soldiers inducted into the British Indian Army travelling to Canada, through to rural Punjabis settling in England post-independence.
But some, especially from Canada, are now choosing to come back home.
One of those is 28-year-old Balkar, who returned in early 2023 after just one year in Toronto. Citizenship was his ultimate goal when he left his little hamlet of Pitho in the wake of the Covid-19 pandemic. His family mortgaged their land to fund his education.
But his Canadian dream quickly lost its allure a few months into his life there.
"Everything was so expensive. I had to work 50 hours every week after college, just to survive," he told the BBC. "High inflation is making many students leave their studies."
Balkar now runs an embroidery business from a small room on one side of the expansive central courtyard in his typical Punjabi home. He also helps on his family's farm to supplement his income.
Opportunities for employment are few and far between in these rural areas, but technology has allowed entrepreneurs like him to conquer the tyranny of distance. Balkar gets the bulk of his business through Instagram.
"I have a good life here. Why should I face hardships there when I can live at home and make good money?" he asks.
The BBC spoke to at least half a dozen reverse migrants in Punjab who shared similar sentiments.
It was also a common refrain in the scores of videos on YouTube shared by Indians who had chosen to abandon their life in Canada and return home. There was a stark difference one young returnee told the BBC between the "rosy picture" immigration agents painted and the rough reality of immigrant life in Toronto and Vancouver.
The "Canada craze" has let up a bit - and especially so among well-off migrants who have a fallback option at home, says Raj Karan Brar, an immigration agent in Bathinda who helps hundreds of Punjabis get permanent residencies and student visas every year.
The desire for a Canadian citizenship remains as strong as ever though among middle- and lower middle-class clients in rural communities.
But viral YouTube videos of students talking about the difficulty in finding jobs and protests over a lack of housing and work opportunities has created an air of nervousness among these students, say immigration agents.
There was a 40% decline in applications from India for Canadian study permits in the second half of 2023, according to one estimate. This was, in part, also due to the ongoing diplomatic tensions between India and Canada over allegations Indian agents were involved in the murder of Canadian Sikh separatist leader Hardeep Singh Nijjar.
There are also hints of deeper cultural factors at play, for a waning Canadian dream among an older generation of Indian migrants.
Karan Aulakh, who spent nearly 15 years in Edmonton and achieved career and financial success, left his managerial job for a comfortable rural life in Khane ki Daab, the village where he was born in 1985. He told the BBC he was upset by LGBT-inclusive education policies in Canada and its 2018 decision to legalise recreational cannabis. Incompatibility with the Western way of life, a struggling healthcare system, and better economic prospects in India were, he said, key reasons why many older Canadian Indians are preparing to leave the country.
"I started an online consultancy - Back to the Motherland - a month and a half ago, to help those who want to reverse migrate. I get at least two to three calls every day, mostly from people in Canada who want to know what job opportunities there are in Punjab and how they can come back," said Mr Aulakh.
For a country that places such a high value on immigration, these trends are "concerning" and are "being received with a bit of a sting politically", says Daniel Bernhard of the Institute of Canadian Citizenship, an immigration advocacy group.
A liberalised immigration regime has been Prime Minister Justin Trudeau's signature policy to counter slowing economic growth and a rapidly aging population.
According to Canada's statistics agency, immigration accounted for 90% of Canada's labour force growth and 75% of population growth in 2021.
International students contribute to over C$20bn ($14.7bn; £11.7bn) to Canada's economy each year, a bulk of them Indians who now make up one in five recent immigrants to the country.
India was also Canada's leading source for immigration in 2022.
The numbers of those leaving are still small in absolute terms with immigration levels at all-time highs in Canada - the country welcomed nearly half a million new migrants each year over the past few years.
But the rate of reverse migration hit a two decade high in 2019, signalling that migrants were "losing confidence" in the country said Mr Bernhard.
Country specific statistics for such emigrants, or reverse migrants, are not available.
But official data obtained by Reuters shows between 80,000 and 90,000 immigrants left Canada in 2021 and 2022 and either went back to their countries, or onward elsewhere.
Some 42,000 people departed in the first half of 2023.
Fewer permanent residents are also going on to become Canadian citizens, according to census data cited by the Institute for Canadian Citizenship. In 2001, 75% of those eligible became citizens. Two decades later, it was 45%.
Canada needs to "restore the value of its citizenship," said Mr Bernhard.
It comes as Canada debates its aggressive immigration targets given country's struggle to absorb more people.
A recent report from National Bank of Canada economists cautioned that the population growth was putting pressure on its already tight housing supply and strained healthcare system.
Canada has seen a population surge - an increase of 1.2 million people in 2023 - driven mostly by newcomers.
The report argued that growth needed to be slowed to an annual increase of up to 500,000 people in order to preserve or increase the standard of living.
There appears to have been a tacit acceptance of this evaluation by policymakers.
Mr Trudeau's Liberal government recently introduced a cap on international student permits that would result in a temporary decrease of 35% in approved study visas.
It's a significant policy shift that some believe may end up further reducing Canada's appeal amid a wave of reverse migrations.

How to Secure an Offer Letter for Your UK Skilled Worker Visa
If you're looking to work in the UK, securing an offer letter is a key step in the process of obtaining a UK Skilled Worker Visa. The UK government introduced this visa route to help employers fill skilled roles that may not be filled by local candidates. The visa allows qualified workers to enter and live in the UK while working for an eligible employer. Below, we outline the essential steps you need to take to secure an offer letter for your UK Skilled Worker Visa.
1. Understand the UK Skilled Worker Visa Requirements
Before you start applying for jobs, it’s important to understand the specific requirements for the UK Skilled Worker Visa. To be eligible for this visa, you must meet several criteria, including:
A job offer from a UK employer who holds a Certificate of Sponsorship (CoS).
A job that is on the list of eligible occupations and meets the required skill level (RQF Level 3 or higher).
The ability to meet the salary threshold, which is generally £26,200 per year or £10.75 per hour, though exceptions may apply for certain jobs.
Your employer will need to issue a Certificate of Sponsorship (CoS), which is a unique reference number that you will use in your visa application.
2. Find a Sponsor
The first step in securing an offer letter for your UK Skilled Worker Visa is finding a UK employer who is registered as a licensed sponsor. These employers are authorized by the UK government to sponsor skilled workers for the visa.
Once you have identified potential employers, you need to apply for open positions that meet the required skill level. Keep in mind that the job you are applying for must be listed as an eligible occupation, which includes a wide range of professions such as healthcare, engineering, IT, and education.
3. Receive a Job Offer
When you’re successful in securing a job interview and are selected for the position, your next step is to receive a formal job offer from the employer. This offer will form the basis of your Certificate of Sponsorship (CoS), which you’ll need to include in your visa application.
The employer will issue the Certificate of Sponsorship (CoS) once they’ve confirmed your job offer. The CoS will contain information about your role, salary, and employment terms. This certificate is valid for up to three months, so it’s crucial to submit your visa application promptly after receiving the CoS.
4. Check if You Qualify for the Job and Salary Requirements
Your skilled worker visa application must meet the minimum salary requirement as mentioned earlier. Some roles, such as those in health or education, may qualify for a lower salary threshold. However, the salary must still meet the minimum for the role to qualify for the visa. It’s important to carefully review the role and its salary to ensure it aligns with the eligibility criteria before applying.
5. Apply for Your UK Skilled Worker Visa
After receiving your job offer and Certificate of Sponsorship (CoS), the next step is applying for your UK Skilled Worker Visa. The process involves completing an online application and providing necessary documentation, such as:
Your Certificate of Sponsorship (CoS) number
Proof of English language proficiency
Passport and biometric details
Proof of financial support (to ensure you can support yourself during your stay)
It’s crucial to ensure your application is complete and accurate to avoid delays or refusal.
6. Additional Visa Options: The Start-Up Visa
If you’re an entrepreneur with an innovative business idea, you might also consider the Start-Up Visa. This visa allows individuals to start a business in the UK with the endorsement of an authorized organization. While this visa differs from the Skilled Worker Visa, it offers another route for talented individuals to enter the UK workforce, particularly those with skills in technology, creative industries, or other fields.
7. Wait for a Decision
After submitting your visa application, the Home Office will review your case and issue a decision. Processing times vary, but it typically takes several weeks. If successful, you will receive your visa and can begin working for your employer in the UK.
8. Move to the UK and Begin Your New Role
Once you have been granted your UK Skilled Worker Visa, you can travel to the UK and start working with your sponsor. You will need to follow the conditions of your visa, such as working in the approved role and reporting any changes to your employment status.
Conclusion
Securing an offer letter is the first step to obtaining your UK Skilled Worker Visa. By finding an eligible employer, ensuring your job meets the skill and salary requirements, and applying for the visa, you can begin your journey to a new career in the UK. If you’re looking for professional guidance to help you navigate the visa process, feel free to visit us at MRK Immigration for expert advice on skilled worker visas, Certificate of Sponsorship (CoS), and more.

Securing Financing for Restaurant Renovations in the UK
Tumblr media
Starting and running a successful restaurant in the UK is no small feat. It requires a well-thought-out plan, significant funding, and meticulous financial management.
This guide will walk you through the essential steps of securing funding and managing your finances to ensure your restaurant thrives.
Understanding Your Financial Needs
Before you dive into securing funding, it's crucial to understand your financial needs. This involves calculating your initial capital requirements, ongoing operational costs, and having contingency funds for unexpected expenses.
Initial Capital Requirements
Setting up a restaurant involves substantial initial costs, including lease or purchase of premises, interior design and renovation, kitchen equipment, furniture, licenses, and initial stock. This initial outlay can range from tens to hundreds of thousands of pounds, depending on the restaurant's size and concept.
Ongoing Operational Costs
Operational costs are the day-to-day expenses required to run your restaurant. These include salaries, utilities, inventory replenishment, marketing, and maintenance. Having a clear idea of these recurring costs is essential for creating a realistic financial plan.
Contingency Funds
It's wise to have a contingency fund to cover unexpected costs such as equipment breakdowns, fluctuations in ingredient prices, or unforeseen market changes. A general rule is to set aside at least 10-20% of your initial budget as a contingency.
Creating a Solid Business Plan
A comprehensive business plan is your roadmap to success and a crucial tool for securing funding.
The Role of a Business Plan in Securing Funding
Investors and lenders will scrutinize your business plan to assess the viability of your restaurant. A well-prepared plan demonstrates your understanding of the market, your business strategy, and your financial projections.
Check: Steps by Step Guide to Open a Restaurant in the UK as a Foreigner by UK Business visa Consultant.
Key Elements of a Restaurant Business Plan
Your business plan should include:
Executive Summary: A brief overview of your restaurant concept, mission, and goals.
Market Analysis: Detailed research on your target market, competition, and location.
Business Structure: Information about your management team and organizational structure.
Menu and Services: A description of your menu offerings and unique selling points.
Marketing Plan: Strategies for attracting and retaining customers.
Financial Projections: Detailed financial forecasts, including projected income statements, cash flow statements, and balance sheets.
Exploring Funding Options
There are several avenues to secure funding for your restaurant. Each option has its advantages and disadvantages, and the best choice depends on your specific situation.
Personal Savings and Family Loans
Using personal savings or borrowing from family and friends can be a straightforward way to secure initial funding. This option often comes with flexible repayment terms and little to no interest but can put personal relationships at risk if things go wrong.
Bank Loans and Overdrafts
Banks offer various loan products and overdrafts tailored for small businesses. These traditional funding sources require a strong business plan and good credit history. Interest rates and repayment terms vary, so it's essential to shop around for the best deal.
Government Grants and Loans
The UK government provides grants and loans to support small businesses, including restaurants. These funds are often more accessible than private loans and come with favorable terms, but competition can be stiff, and the application process can be lengthy.
Angel Investors and Venture Capitalists
Angel investors and venture capitalists can provide substantial funding in exchange for equity in your business. They often bring valuable expertise and connections but may demand significant control over business decisions.
Crowdfunding
Crowdfunding platforms like Kickstarter and Indiegogo allow you to raise small amounts of money from many people. This method can also serve as a marketing tool to build early customer interest, but it requires a compelling campaign and can be time-consuming.
Applying for a Bank Loan
Preparing Your Loan Application
A successful bank loan application requires thorough preparation. Gather all necessary documents, including your business plan, financial statements, credit history, and any collateral you can offer.
Understanding Bank Requirements
Banks will assess your ability to repay the loan, your business's potential profitability, and the value of your collateral. Understanding these criteria will help you present a stronger case.
The SmartMove2UK’s Success Story: Mr. Roop Pratap Chaudhury recently started a new restaurant, Colonel Saab, in London, and was assisted in the process by Mrs. Falguni Y Parekh, a UK Immigration Solicitor and Founder of The SmartMove2UK.
Tips for a Successful Loan Application
Build a Strong Relationship with Your Bank: Having a history of good financial management can work in your Favor.
Be Transparent: Clearly explain how you plan to use the funds and how you will repay the loan.
Showcase Your Experience: Highlight your background and experience in the restaurant industry.
Leveraging Government Support
Types of Government Grants and Loans
The UK offers various grants and loans for small businesses, such as the Start Up Loans scheme and the Small Business Grant Fund. These can provide crucial funding without the high interest rates of traditional loans.
Eligibility Criteria
Eligibility varies by program but generally includes factors like business size, location, and industry. It's important to thoroughly research and ensure you meet the criteria before applying.
Application Process
The application process typically involves submitting detailed business plans, financial projections, and other supporting documents. Be prepared for a thorough review and possible interviews.
Attracting Investors
What Investors Look for in a Restaurant
Investors seek businesses with strong growth potential, a unique concept, and a capable management team. They will also look at your financial projections and market research.
Preparing a Pitch Deck
Your pitch deck should be a concise and visually appealing presentation that highlights your restaurant's concept, market opportunity, financial projections, and team. Practice delivering your pitch confidently and clearly.
Networking and Finding Potential Investors
Attend industry events, join business networks, and use online platforms like LinkedIn to connect with potential investors. Building relationships takes time, so start networking early.
Utilizing Crowdfunding Platforms
Popular Crowdfunding Sites for Restaurants
Platforms like Kickstarter, Indiegogo, and Crowdcube are popular choices for raising funds. Each has its own rules and audience, so choose the one that best fits your needs.
How to Create a Compelling Campaign
A successful crowdfunding campaign needs a compelling story, attractive rewards, and a strong marketing push. Use high-quality images and videos to showcase your restaurant's concept and engage potential backers.
Benefits and Drawbacks of Crowdfunding
Crowdfunding can generate buzz and provide funds without giving up equity, but it can be time-consuming and uncertain. You'll need to invest significant effort into your campaign to reach your funding goal.
Managing Finances Effectively
Setting Up a Financial Management System
A robust financial management system helps you track income, expenses, and profitability. Consider using accounting software tailored for restaurants to streamline this process.
Monitoring Cash Flow
Regularly monitor your cash flow to ensure you have enough funds to cover expenses. Cash flow issues are a leading cause of business failure, so staying on top of this is crucial.
Budgeting and Forecasting
Create monthly budgets and financial forecasts to plan for future expenses and revenue. This helps you make informed decisions and avoid unexpected shortfalls.
Implementing Accounting Practices
Choosing the Right Accounting Software
Select accounting software that suits your business size and complexity. Popular options include QuickBooks, Xero, and Sage Business Cloud. These tools can automate many tasks and provide valuable financial insights.
Keeping Accurate Financial Records
Maintain accurate and up-to-date financial records. This not only helps with day-to-day management but is also essential for tax purposes and when seeking additional funding.
Understanding Profit and Loss Statements
Regularly review your profit and loss (P&L) statements to understand your restaurant's financial health. This statement summarizes your revenues, costs, and expenses over a specific period, helping you identify areas for improvement.

Controlling Operational Costs
Managing Food and Beverage Costs
Monitor food and beverage costs closely by tracking inventory and reducing waste. Consider negotiating with suppliers for better prices and buying in bulk when possible.
Efficient Staffing Practices
Optimize your staffing levels to meet demand without overstaffing. Use scheduling software to plan shifts and avoid unnecessary labor costs.
Reducing Overheads
Look for ways to reduce overhead costs, such as energy-efficient appliances, renegotiating lease terms, and cutting down on non-essential expenses.
Enhancing Revenue Streams
Diversifying Menu Offerings
Expand your menu to include items that appeal to a broader audience or capitalize on current food trends. Offering seasonal or limited-time items can also drive repeat visits.
Implementing Marketing Strategies
Invest in marketing strategies to attract and retain customers. Utilize social media, email marketing, and local advertising to build your brand and increase visibility.
Utilizing Delivery and Takeaway Services
Offer delivery and takeaway options to reach a wider audience. Partner with delivery platforms like Uber Eats and Deliveroo to make it easier for customers to order from your restaurant.
Building a Financial Cushion
Importance of an Emergency Fund
An emergency fund provides a financial cushion during tough times. Aim to save enough to cover at least three to six months of operating expenses.
Strategies for Saving
Regularly set aside a portion of your profits into a savings account. Cut unnecessary expenses and look for ways to increase efficiency to boost your savings.
Insurance Considerations
Having the right insurance can protect your restaurant from unforeseen events. Consider policies for property damage, liability, and business interruption.
Evaluating Financial Performance
Key Financial Metrics to Track
Track key metrics such as gross profit margin, net profit margin, and customer acquisition costs. These indicators help you assess your restaurant's financial health and performance.
Regular Financial Reviews
Conduct regular financial reviews to stay on top of your restaurant's performance. Analyze your financial statements and compare them to your forecasts to identify trends and areas for improvement.
Adjusting Strategies Based on Performance
Use insights from your financial reviews to adjust your business strategies. Whether it's tweaking your menu, adjusting pricing, or changing marketing tactics, being adaptable is key to long-term success.
