A dress belonging to Grand Duchess Olga Nikolaevna, made in the workshop of August Brizak circa 1912-1914

Made of satin, silk, and lace, the dress is a delicate embroidered gown, reaching 140cm (55 inches) long. In photographs the dress appears slightly green, whilst those who have seen it in person describe it as very light blue. 

August Brizak was a particular favourite designer of the Romanov family, making several gowns for the four Grand Duchesses and Tsarina Alexandra. By 1914, the bill for the year sent to the Brizak was over 19,000 roubles. Originating from France, August and his family established a successful business in 1855 creating tailored gowns. The House of Brizak also made the miniature sailor suits worn by the four Grand Duchesses.

Olga is pictured wearing a very similar dress whilst holidaying at the Livadia Palace in 1913. Whilst this is *not* the exact dress preserved here, it demonstrates the popular style of the period and aristocratic fashion tastes. Olga’s English Tutor, Sydney Gibbes, recalled that “Olga was very modest. She liked simplicity and did not pay much attention to dress.”

The dress entered the Hermitage Museum’s collection in 1950. It has been exhibited multiple times, including internationally in Amsterdam, and was most recently exhibited at the ‘ОТМА + Алексей’ exhibition at the Hermitage.

Sitting next to your girlfriend, Sydney, in the cafeteria, your eyes landed on Kylar, staring at you from across the room. She seemed to be a constant presence in your life, despite you knowing next to nothing about her. Everywhere you looked, there she was. At work, at home, at school… it was unsettling to say the least, but you tried to ignore it. You saw how people treated her and the last thing you wanted to do was add onto that pain. 

Your gaze met hers and you quickly looked away, not eager to fuel her fire. Your thoughts trailed back to the statuette you’d seen in her locker, the drawing of you taped to it. You weren’t even sure how she could’ve drawn you so accurately, and it made you feel uneasy to think about it too much. Your girlfriend’s hand squeezing your thigh brought you back to the present.

“Are you alright? You seem distracted today.” She asked, voice tinged with concern. You flipped your hair behind your shoulder, looking back to your lover. You could still feel Kylar’s stare burning into the side of your head.

“I’m… fine. Just thinking,” You sigh, poking your fork into the mystery meat on your tray. 

“Do you know Kylar well at all?” Sydney looked at you curiously, brows furrowed and head tilted to the side. She glanced over at Kylar, who quickly looked away. An unmistakable look of sadness crossed Sydney’s features. She quickly recovered, shaking her thoughts away and answering you.

“I used to. We haven’t really talked much since I tutored her in English. Even then, she was pretty private. But we knew each other as kids, used to play together all the time.” Her answer was melancholic, and you could tell there was more to the story than she was letting on, but you decided to leave it for the moment. Nodding an acknowledgement, you went back to prodding at your food. 

“What makes you ask?” She interrupts your train of thought, stealing a chip off your plate. You think back to all the run-ins you’ve had with Kylar in the last week alone. It felt like you were under police surveillance or something. You didn’t want to worry your girlfriend, or get Kylar into any trouble, so you tried to be subtle. 

“Oh, nothing. I think she’s just got an innocent crush, is all.” A frown immediately crossed your girlfriend’s face, and she looked back over at Kylar suspiciously. 

“It’s not exactly innocent if you have a girlfriend, is it?” You give her a disapproving look, rolling your eyes. It wasn’t as if Kylar was going to do anything, right? There was nothing to worry about, you only have eyes for Sydney, after all. Finishing up your lunch, you dispose of your tray and kiss your girlfriend goodbye as you walk to your history class. 

Sydney returns to her post in the library, stewing on the supposed ‘innocent crush’ you mentioned. She sorted through the book returns, thoughts swirling in her head about her childhood friend. Sydney didn’t want to alarm you, but Kylar did have quite a reputation for being… unhinged. She wasn't the same docile girl she’d grown up going on playdates with. It didn’t exactly inspire comfort that she was interested in her girlfriend. 

As if the universe was tuned into her inner thoughts, Kylar approached the library counter holding a textbook. The petite girl didn’t meet Sydney’s eyes as she slid the book across the counter silently. 

“Are you… returning or checking out?” She asked quizzically, perplexed by the utter silence. 

“R-returning.” She says quickly and quietly, hardly audible. Kylar fiddles with the sleeves of her hoodie, staring down at the carpet as Sydney checks the computer system for her transaction. A few moments of painful silence later, Sydney takes the book and opens it up, examining for damage.

In the margins of the intro page, she spots several intricately drawn portraits. Each one bearing an uncanny resemblance to her girlfriend. She turns the book around for Kylar to look at, pointing at the drawings.

“What is this? You know doodling will incur a damage fee, right?” Sydney asks, a little harsher than she intends. She knows this crush is not as innocent as you think it is. Kylar finally looks up, brushing her hair out of her face to look at the sketches. Her face heats up, likely a result of being caught red-handed. Fumbling through her pockets, she pulls out a £20 note and slides it across the counter.

“Kylar?” Sydney asks suddenly, taking the money and placing it in the cash register. Kylar chews on her bottom lip, looking up expectantly, but she doesn’t say anything in response. 

“You’re really talented. I’d hate to see that be wasted on something that's not...appreciated, yeah?” Kylar’s eyes go wide but she doesn’t look up from the carpet; she gives a frantic nod and makes a small whimpering noise like she’s been injured. It doesn’t feel good for Sydney to be unkind, especially with her complicated feelings towards Kylar. On the other hand, she can’t just sit idly by while her girlfriend is stalked by an unhinged recluse with attachment issues. 

Kylar quietly excuses herself, rushing towards the exit before Sydney can say anything else. Your girlfriend continues on with her duties, feeling both satisfied and melancholic. She wishes things were different, of course. She wishes the very best for Kylar. As long as the very best is far, far away from you.

Anna Vyrubova—quite possibly Alexandra's dearest friend. Typically viewed as a bit of a simpleton or a cunning spy--the reality is probably that she was neither. Also very attached to Rasputin.

Lili Dehn—another of Alexandra's friends, a lady-in-waiting. Also close with Nicholas and the children; was with Alexandra when Nicholas abdicated.

Elizabeth Naryshkina—the elderly mistress of the robes.

Sophie Buxhoevedon—lady-in-waiting, affectionately known as "Isa" (also spelled "Iza").

Catherine "Trina" Schneider—also attempted (unsuccessfully) to teach the Romanov sisters German. Taught Russian to Alexandra. Lutheran.

Grigori Rasputin—infamous. Especially intimate with Alexandra, also a sort of mentor for the daughters. Killed in 1916.

Kolya Demenkov—Alexei’s friend.

Gleb Botkin & Tatiana Botkina—the children of Evgeny Botkin.

Grand Duke Dmitri Pavlovich—one of Nicholas’s favorite cousins, and once considered a possible groom for Olga. Under the care of Elizabeth Feodorovna. One of Rasputin’s assassins.

Grand Duchess Elizabeth Feodorovna—Alexandra’s sister. Became a nun after her husband Sergei’s assassination in 1905; sent coffee and chocolate to the family during imprisonment. Murdered by the Bolsheviks.

BONDI JUNCTION WESTFIELD ATTACK

Six people (5 women and 1 man) have been murdered in a mass killing in Bondi Junction Westfield on Saturday, when at 3pm, Queensland man Joel Cauchi walked into the shopping centre wearing a green and yellow sport jersey and then left. He returned 10 minutes later and then started stabbing and killing people, mainly targeting women. There are twelve people in hospital suffering serious injuries.

            Ashlee Good was stabbed to death by Cauchi, who also stabbed her 9-month year old baby daughter who had to get emergency surgery. Australian millionaire John Singleton’s daughter, Dawn, 25, was also a victim; and there were also two victims who from overseas.

            There were many heros yesterday, including a man from Russia who tried to prevent the attacker from killing more people by fighting him off with a bollard. There were men who ran after the perpetrator, one of the them carrying a chair. One man walking behind a woman with her children (possibly his partner and children) realised the danger they were in and turned around and attempted blocking the way to protect the three. Instead of running towards the man, Cauchi dodged him and ran into a different direction.

The NSW police officer, Amy Scott, who was the only police officer on site at the time who ran towards Cauchi and shot and killed him and saved more lives in doing so.

            The perpetrator was known to police and had mental health issues. It was said that he had no police record but there are rumours online that he had been previously arrested for DV and assault - however, this is all heresay.

            There was a woman, 36, who was stabbed on Bondi Beach on Friday, 12 April - the day before the Westfield stabbings. The perpetrator of that attack hasn’t been arrested and was still under investigation when the Westfield stabbing took place. Some believe that the Bondi Beach stabbing may have been linked to Cauchi or perhaps it was just a coincidence?

            Some commenters believe he was a drug addict, we don’t know if that is true or not. One man who knew him up in QLD told the media that Cauchi owned knives which he named his ‘everyday knives’. On his Facebook account he described himself as ‘single’. He was known to go to nudist beaches, strip clubs as well as listing himself on an escort website in Sydney in June last year.

            Criminal psychologist Dr Watson-Munro stated that Cauchi ‘knew what he was doing’ and that he was ‘bad not mad’ and ‘there’s clearly planning attached to this’. He stated, “But here was somebody who was on a mission, he knew what he wanted to do and he did it with deadly affect.”

            He came down from QLD to Sydney only a month ago, rented a small storage facility and went to Bondi to learn how to surf. He went surfing at Bondi 6-days ago. In 2010, he was an online English tutor. There is still a lot of information we don’t know as yet as the investigation continues.

Are there any interesting facts about Maria

I think it's fairly common knowledge that she had the 'royal memory for faces,' and never forgot a person, but it seems she just had a really good memory in general. Alexander Spiridovitch, who was head of Nicholas II's personal guard for about 10 years, mentioned this:

Marie Nicolaievna was a well-developed, robust girl, with large blue eyes, of a typically Russian beauty. She had an excellent memory, and whenever it was a question of remembering something, her sisters left it to her.

It was the nanny, Margertta Eagar, who mentioned her royal memory for faces. And of course Eagar left the staff when Maria was still quite young, but I find this description of her pretty interesting as a contrast to some of the other descriptions of her:

Marie was more remarkable for her goodness than anything else, but she also learned very quickly. She was always very anxious to begin lessons and she would listen and look and try to reproduce. [. . .] She has great determination, and whatever she attempts to do she always finishes and carries through.

And that reminds me of an anecdote from Sydney Gibbes, the English tutor, where one time Empress Alexandra sat in on one of Maria's lessons and was concerned that Gibbes had left the book open on the table. He assured her that "Marie never looked, or, if she did, always confessed immediately."
