Let’s remind everyone what our criteria were: Because of the pandemic this year every show that we have reviewed was nominated for at least one category. We picked winners by a very specific set of criteria: What was this show attempting to do? Was it successful? Was it the most successful of all the shows that tried to do this? We apologize to anyone who thought that we would be announcing winners today. We decided that we wanted to save all of the spoilers for the live show on February 21st at 8PM EST. Alton Glenn Miller was an American big-band trombonist, arranger, composer, and bandleader in the swing era. He was the best-selling recording artist from 1939 to 1942, leading one of the best-known big bands. Miller's recordings include "In the Mood", "Moonlight Serenade", "Pennsylvania 6-5000", "Chattanooga Choo Choo", "A String of Pearls", "At Last", "(I've Got a Gal In) Kalamazoo", "American Patrol", "Tuxedo Junction", "Elmer's Tune", and "Little Brown Jug". The son of Mattie Lou (née Cavender) and Lewis Elmer Miller, Glenn Miller was born in Clarinda, Iowa. He attended grade school in North Platte in western Nebraska. In 1915, his family moved to Grant City, Missouri. Around this time, he had made enough money from milking cows to buy his first trombone and played in the town orchestra. During his senior year he became interested in "dance band music". He was so taken that he formed a band with some classmates. By the time he graduated from high school in 1921 he had decided to become a professional musician.

In 1923 Miller entered the University of Colorado, he spent most of his time away from school, attending auditions and playing any gigs he could get, including with Boyd Senter's band in Denver. After failing three out of five classes, he dropped out of school to pursue a career in music

In 1926 Miller toured with several groups, landing a good spot in Ben Pollack's group in Los Angeles. He also played for Victor Young, which allowed him to be mentored by other professional musicians. In the beginning he was the main trombone soloist of the band. But when Jack Teagarden joined Pollack's band in 1928, Miller found that his solos were cut drastically. He realized that his future was in arranging and composing.

In 1928, when the band arrived in New York City, he sent for and married his college sweetheart, Helen Burger. He was a member of Red Nichols's orchestra in 1930, and because of Nichols, he played in the pit bands of two Broadway shows, Strike Up the Band and Girl Crazy. The band included Benny Goodman and Gene Krupa.

During the late 1920s and early 1930s Miller worked as a freelance trombonist in several bands. On a March 21, 1928 Victor Records session he played alongside Tommy Dorsey, Benny Goodman, and Joe Venuti in the All-Star Orchestra directed by Nat Shilkret.

In the early-to-mid-1930s, Miller worked as a trombonist, arranger, and composer for The Dorsey Brothers, first when they were a Brunswick studio group and when they formed an ill-fated orchestra. In 1935, he assembled an American orchestra for British bandleader Ray Noble, developing the arrangement of lead clarinet over four saxophones that became a characteristic of his big band.

Miller made his first movie appearance in The Big Broadcast of 1936 as a member of the Ray Noble Orchestra performing "Why Stars Come Out at Night". The film included performances by Dorothy Dandridge and the Nicholas Brothers, who would appear with Miller again in two movies for Twentieth Century Fox in 1941 and 1942.

In 1937, Miller compiled several arrangements and formed his first band. After failing to distinguish itself from the many bands of the time, it broke up after its last show at the Ritz Ballroom in Bridgeport, Connecticut on January 2, 1938

Benny Goodman said in 1976

    In late 1937, before his band became popular, we were both playing in Dallas. Glenn was pretty dejected and came to see me. He asked, "What do you do? How do you make it?" I said, "I don't know, Glenn. You just stay with it."

Discouraged, Miller returned to New York. He realized that he needed to develop a unique sound, and decided to make the clarinet play a melodic line with a tenor saxophone holding the same note, while three other saxophones harmonized within a single octave. With this new sound combination, Glenn Miller found a way to differentiate his band's style from the many bands that existed in the late thirties

In September 1938, the Miller band began recording for Bluebird, a subsidiary of RCA. In the spring of 1939, the band's fortunes improved with a date at the Meadowbrook Ballroom in Cedar Grove, New Jersey and more dramatically at the Glen Island Casino in New Rochelle, New York. According to author Gunther Schuller, the Glen Island performance attracted "a record breaking opening night crowd of 1800..." The band's popularity grew. In 1939, Time magazine noted, "Of the twelve to 24 discs in each of today's 300,000 U.S. jukeboxes, from two to six are usually Glenn Miller's." "Tuxedo Junction" sold 115,000 copies in the first week. Miller's success in 1939 culminated with an appearance at Carnegie Hall on October 6 with Paul Whiteman, Benny Goodman, and Fred Waring also on the schedule.

In 1942, at the peak of his civilian career, Miller decided to join the war effort, forsaking an income of $15,000 to $20,000 per week in civilian life, including a home in Tenafly, New Jersey.  At 38, Miller was too old to be drafted and first volunteered for the Navy but was told that they did not need his services. Miller then wrote to Army Brigadier General Charles Young. He persuaded the United States Army to accept him so he could, in his own words, "be placed in charge of a modernized Army band". His patriotic intention of entertaining the Allied Forces with the fusion of virtuosity and dance rhythms in his music earned him the rank of captain and he was soon promoted to major by August 1944

Miller was due to fly from the United Kingdom to Paris on December 15, 1944, to make arrangements to move his entire band there in the near future. His plane, a single-engine UC-64 Norseman, departed from RAF Twinwood Farm in Clapham, on the outskirts of Bedford, and disappeared while flying over the English Channel.

Miller left behind his wife and two adopted children. He was posthumously awarded the Bronze Star, presented to his wife Helen in a ceremony held on March 24, 1945

We got together a bunch of motorcycle riders that either work in the industry or are members of a New Zealand motorcycle club and asked them all the same question. Tell us, what do you enjoy most about motorcycles?

What do you enjoy most about motorcycles? In short, everything. But particularly the heart of all motorcycles, the engine. The raw mechanical spirit of old motorcycles, the finely tuned scream of high-revving modern sports bikes, the solid rumble of a v-twin and the simple yet provocative thump of a single cylinder supermotard.

What do you enjoy most about motorcycles? There’s a definite and undeniable thrill that comes with motorcycling.  I’ve curbed my urge to try hit top speeds and reach personal best times, for me the most enjoyment comes from just going for a cruise. In saying that I do love really twisting that throttle hard from time to time, that’s part of the fun.  Sometimes as little as thirty minutes on the bike is just what I needed, not to get from A to B, just for the enjoyment of it.  I find it an unusual mix of both exhilaration and relaxation.

Denver took on the Resurgence Gear rights to both Australia and New Zealand when the Canadian brand first launched in 2013.

His first motorcycle was a 1982 Honda XR80 and he currently rides a customed 2006, Triumph Bonneville T100.

Advisory Board Meeting This was our first year attending GNOME’s Users and Developers Conference in Europe. Before the conference start, we were scheduled to attend the GNOME Foundation Advisory Board meeting. We were excited to meet the other board members from the community and learn about their current projects, especially to learn if there was any overlap on projects that we could collaborate together on. The other board members include representatives from: GNOME, Debian, Private Internet Access, Canonical, Endless, Red Hat, Suse, Free Software Foundation, and The Document Foundation.

Conference Talks

The talks overall were general updates about various pieces of the GNOME ecosystem, and what different individuals had been working on in the past year. Here are some talks that stood out:

The future of GTK

This status update focused on what’s coming next with GTK4 with regards to themability, app menus, new widgets, and more. There are several new widgets coming that we’re excited to try out, including the GtkPicture and GtkVideo widgets; we can definitely see a place for them providing rich graphics and animations throughout Pop!_OS, like in our installer, for example. The information about porting from GTK3 to GTK4 was also helpful, since we now maintain and ship a number of GTK3 apps in Pop!_OS.

Tests, profiling, and debugging Nautilus:

Tests help find performance issues, regressions, easier debugging, and finding memory leaks. Started by looking at sync vs async, modularity, refactoring for readability, etc.

GNOME Usage:

Interested in power management in Linux. “Batteries are efficient, but they’re not smart enough.” Usage is designed to tell its users (i.e. developers) what hardware and software is responsible for battery usage. Windows uses “Battery engine,” Android handles via kernel, and iOS also tracks it. Prospective design from Allan Day includes a chart of usage over time. reach.aditya.here@gmail.com

How to take over GNOME:

GUADEC helped Tobias (of Purism) start contributing. He started working on design projects (Todo, Fractal, App Menu), and then was hired by Purism to work on Librem 5. Kind of an interesting case study.

Freedesktop-sdk, the future of Linux runtimes (Aud)

This is all about FreeDesktop.org efforts for cross-distro and cross-desktop compatibility, something that will become increasingly important as we tailor the UX of Pop!_OS while leaning on the GNOME and Open Source community for applications and tools.

Building the Libre Desktop Computer

We gave a talk about building the libre computer, explaining what a computer containing all open parts could create for the future of open source. We presented where we’re at in launching the desktop. This is our first time announcing details on the open desktop to the public. The talk is viewable on Youtube.

Lightning Talks

-Our UX Architect, Cassidy Blaede, presented on technical vs. social problems in app design. This is a talk that he wants to expand on for the LAS conference taking place in Denver this September. 

-Daniel Foré of elementary gave a talk on thinking about “the user as your romantic partner.” Advices product designers/developers to apply dating advice when engaging their users.

-Robert Ancell shared his work on a fun robot project for kids by making a Raspberry Pi based Python IDE that runs over SSH—the UI is done entirely in the TTY, and so you can remote into the robot and do all the coding directly. It was a pretty stark contrast to the gamified code learning tools we’ve seen from other people, and really demonstrated that there are different effective approaches to teaching kids how to use these powerful tools.

-Britt gave a talk about being an audiologist PhD student using all sorts of open source software and 3D printed research parts—he mentioned that the big “med tech” companies are so proprietary that it’s common for medical students and researchers to default to open tools instead. This really validates what we’re doing with Pop!_OS and was really cool to hear straight from someone in the field.

-Robin from Endless had one of the most popular lightning talks. She presented a walkthrough of UX testing and design practices, and how those methods can and should change throughout the development cycle. She plans to present a full-length version of her talk at LAS conference in Denver, and we can’t wait to hear it!

Workshops and New Projects Derived from Conference

GTK BoF:

Following up on the GTK talk, we attended the GTK BoF and workshop. It was mostly focused on release planning and low-level implementation ideas, but still valuable. There’s some new diff-based frame redrawing and other optimizations that should be good for performance and power consumption, which is always important to us.

Multiple Displays BoF:

BoF on this topic can be found at the GUADEC Wiki. We hosted a conversation about how we can improve the multi-displayexperience in Mutter, Shell, and Settings. Some suggestions from the discussion included looking into contextual feature options that detect the type of display, for example: a projector detection could enable a “Presentation Mode,” possibly including the Do-Not-Disturb feature that we debuted in Pop!_OS. We also talked about upstreaming much of the work we’re doing in the HiDPI Daemon to Mutter itself, and we were thrilled to hear that Marco had been exploring similar work in Mutter already. We look forward to collaborating closer with the GNOME and Mutter folks in these areas.

Theming & Ecosystem BoF:

How do we improve user experience despite different themes, multiple apps? The goal of this talk was to discuss how to provide a predictable platform for developers to build on. Complete notes on the talk are available on the wiki.

While we track GNOME changes very closely and are constantly dogfooding the Pop! stylesheet, a proposed standardized theming API for Adwaita could deliver more guarantees about things not breaking in third-party apps and between major Pop!_OS releases. The GNOME design team wants to hear from downstreams like Ubuntu and Pop!_OS about what sorts of things we theme, and how it differs compared to Adwaita. We plan to work together to figure out the best way forward.

Some GNOME designers are also working on a new icon style that looks much more modern in visual style while not clashing so much with general popular third-party apps (like the slightly flatter Firefox, Spotify, VS Code, etc.). Incidentally, this new GNOME icon style looks much closer to Pop!_OS icons, which could lead to some interesting things in the future. Stay tuned!

10. A Christian Secession – How Long will Apple Pie Remain?

Major League Baseball (MLB) and Coca-Cola (Coke) joined the ranks of the Demented Marxists (DM) this past week by deciding to move the All-Star game from Atlanta to Denver. The explanation was that they were opposed to the new racist voting laws passed by the Georgia legislature. DMs are all about political theatre. A review of the facts reveals this to be theater of the absurd:

1. Atlanta is predominately black and Denver is predominately white, so how does moving the All-Star game from a black city to a white city show solidarity with blacks?

2. The new legislation is “looser” than the standards previously labeled as being the threshold for acceptance by Biden and his mouthpieces in the so-called media but was still labeled “Jim Crow”. “Bad” can be white, southern, or both.

3. Perhaps the propaganda mills/media were simply attacking because Fulton County Georgia (Atlanta) last week also joined the list of communities being investigated for vote fraud. The Georgia Secretary of State and Board of Supervisors both lost court cases where they were attempting to block the investigation of the ballots used last November. If one is innocent, the investigation should be joyful. Of course, anyone that watched the videos from November knows fraud occurred.

Last week I mentioned that only baseball and apple pie were left from the “Racist List”. Baseball is apparently on the Racist List now. I wonder how the DMs will decide that apple pie is racist. Will it be the apples or the crust? I never thought about the color of the pie crust before… it is a shade of white or light brown. That must be why apple pie will be racist.

To not be racist, will an apple pie have to be made with a black crust? I never cared for burnt pie. But I do love my pie a la mode. I prefer vanilla ice cream with my apple pie. Does that make me a double racist because my apple pie has a white crust and vanilla ice cream? Maybe apple pie a la mode with vanilla ice cream simply confirms my racism. My favorite apple pie has a little cinnamon in it. Do those dark brown flecks of cinnamon give me any slack on the status of my racism? I think it is best to just have another slice of apple pie while I contemplate the question of my racism Please make it a la mode with vanilla ice cream.

Last week I closed my Bank of America accounts and moved them to a community bank new to our market. The branch manager decided to handle our exit personally explaining that we would receive a survey and our reply would impact her performance review. On Friday the Bank of America sent me their email survey about my action seeking feedback. The dark side of Ned had some fun thinking of my reply.

1. You do not like Trump, but I thought he was both correct and a hoot.

2. If Trump was running your bank, it would be Great Again but you are running it so it is mediocre.

3. I am not stupid enough to be Woke so I am taking my money with me to a smart bank.

Finally, I decided to just be candid and stated that when they froze the accounts of some prominent Trump supporters in January, I knew I needed to exit Bank of America. Anticlimactic, but accurate. The branch manager was a nice young lady. Her only mistake was working for a big bank. Big does not mean better, it just means big and inefficient.

Two quick notes about the current bizarre society the DM’s are creating:

1. Nod’s “not a crisis” at the southern border continues to be catastrophic with over 100,000 illegal immigrants in February and over 170,000 in March. Apparently, Nod’s administration is thinking of building more wall. Does that sound familiar? Are they going to relocate the one that was around the U.S. Capitol? It is only slightly used.

2. Did you see the report that over 250 biological male inmates in California have self-identified as women and applied to be moved to a prison for women? How do the DMs deny that request? Will judges have to start asking prisoners to self-determine where they go to serve their sentence? I am giddily waiting for the lawsuit to be filed seeking to force unisex prisons.

86 days into the DMs’ coup, here are some quick observations of events that will impact our economy:

1. The 10-year Treasury continues to fluctuate around 1.70%. This increase of over 1.0 % since the end of October of last year means mortgage rates have increased. Forecasts from various sources suggest by the end of 2021 the 10-year Treasury will be 2.5% to 3.0% and mortgage rates will increase to 4.0% to 4.5%.

2. Rising mortgage rates reduces the amount of mortgage loan that a buyer will qualify to obtain. That impacts their ability to buy thus reducing the number of potential home buyers thus slowing a major economic engine of the US recovery. Economic pendulums always swing too far. Bubbles always burst. There is never a “soft landing”.

3. The DM’s two “Infrastructure” bills, each $2 Trillion, are bad jokes. The pictures I saw of the “announcement” by Nod in Pittsburg showed a crowd of perhaps 12 folks if you count the secret service members. I find myself wondering:

A. Who in the world thinks these proposals are going to benefit the USA other than the unions who want to make everyone join a union?

B. How much do the DMs benefit financially from these disasters?

C. How did we get so many folks in government who have no real-world experience?

D. Idiots self-identify by claiming they can tax and spend our way into prosperity.

4. HR-1 has passed the House and its mirror, S-1, is poised to pass if Manchin gets bribed enough. Apparently, the Senate Parliamentarian is now in the tank as she ruled the DMs do not need a Republican vote to pass the “Infrastructure” bills. Would you like to know how much it cost the DM’s to get that decision?

5. Keep watching the activity about the fraudulent election last November.

a. The Michigan Supreme Court ruled that the Michigan Secretary of State exceeded her authority when she approved a variety of changes to the state’s election laws. Was the “certified” election in Michigan a fraud? YES.

b. The Republicans in the Arizona legislature have authorized and selected who will handle the hand recount of 2.1 Million votes in Maricopa County, Arizona.

c. Two weeks ago, Wisconsin’s legislature voted to investigate the 2020 election. All the DM’s voted against it. Odd behavior for anyone convinced the election was honest.

d. Now, the Fulton County (Atlanta) Georgia ballots are to be audited. Stay tuned, there is more to come.

The recession that is coming will be the seventh one in my career. The current shortage of housing results from government regulations that delay new communities from being built. The industry cannot quickly adjust to increased demand. However, every previous time I have witnessed bubbles burst, shortage become surplus. This is the peak of this economic cycle.

Unsustainable things continue until that unpredictable moment when they stop. In a financial crisis “Cash is King”. Get prepared.
