Writer and cartographer who documented the landscapes of the west coast of Ireland in a series of influential books
Tim Robinson, who has died aged 85 after contracting Covid-19, was a cartographer, visual artist and writer who made a sustained study of the landscape of the Aran islands and Connemara after moving from London to the west of Ireland in 1972. A walker in all weathers, he wrote a series of influential books, and created intricate hand-drawn maps to accompany them, which were published by Folding Landscapes, the imprint he set up with his wife, Máiréad.
In the two volumes of Stones of Aran, Robinson recorded his walks around Árainn, the largest of the Aran islands, which sit by the mouth of Galway Bay. Pilgrimage (1986), the first book, which won the Irish Book Awards literature medal, traced the endless perimeter of the island’s rocky coastline, Robinson in search of “a single step as adequate to the ground it clears as is the dolphin’s arc to the wave”. Observing patterns of rock, wind and water opened his prose to the fractal dimensions of the inlet, the cove, the cliff and darkening pool.
Labyrinth (1995), the second book, headed into Árainn’s interior. Understanding the Irish language as the living code that connected humanity to the deep time of stone and water, Robinson was a meticulous collector of names, stories and places. His life’s work laid new strata in the cultural history of Ireland.
The Connemara trilogy – Connemara: Listening to the Wind (2006), Connemara: The Last Pool of Darkness (2008) and Connemara: A Little Gaelic Kingdom (2011) - continued Robinson’s exploration of the relationship between the human and the inanimate, and won him two more Irish Book awards. He had a long association with academics at the National University of Ireland Galway, from whom he sought advice on everything from rock formations to language puzzles. These questions evolved from conversations with the local communities of which he was part and whose knowledge he respected deeply.
The resulting fusions created a culture of collaboration, or meitheal, that for decades drew artists and scientists to the Robinsons’ home in Roundstone, County Galway, where they had settled in 1984. Spry, sharp and gently intent, Robinson encouraged John Moriarty, Moya Cannon, Robert Macfarlane and many others, his natural frugality leavened by the supply of tea and chocolate digestives. Robinson signed his correspondence with Andrew McNeillie, whose magazine Archipelago situated Robinson beside another great coastal artist, Norman Ackroyd, with a cormorant’s “squawk”. This mimicked the sound of the bird on a rock as it made room for another, just as Robinson shared his learning with so many of his contemporaries.
He was born in St Albans, Hertfordshire, and grew up in Ilkley, Yorkshire, one of two sons of Grace (nee Drever) and Frank Robinson, whose family business sold engineering equipment, stipends from which kept Tim going as a young artist and writer. As a child he explored “the watery intricacies” and “airy uplands” of Wharfedale and Ilkley Moor with his brother, landscapes that were later echoed in the Burren area of County Clare and in Roundstone Bog.
Educated at Ilkley grammar school, Robinson did his national service in the RAF as a technician servicing radar devices in Malaya. He studied mathematics and physics at Sidney Sussex College, Cambridge and in London in 1959 married Margaret Fitzgibbon, known as Máiréad, whom he met in a house share soon after graduating.
Máiréad, or M in the books, was Tim’s constant partner, reading to him, encouraging him, and travelling with him on his unlikely expeditions, first to Istanbul, and then to Vienna, where he painted and exhibited. Unsettled on their return to London in 1964, Tim – using the name Timothy Drever, after his Scottish mother – worked as a subeditor and technical illustrator, and continued to paint and show his work; he later donated his geometric paintings from this period to the Irish Museum of Modern Art, in Dublin.
The Irish phase of his life began with his arrival in the Aran islands in 1972, a westerly terrain that consumed his imagination ever after. His first work was Setting Foot on the Shores of Connemara, published by Lilliput Press as a pamphlet in 1984. The notes and maps made during these years filled the flood-prone ground floor of the Robinson’s home in Roundstone, the upper floor of which looks over the pier and the landward bay, out towards the Twelve Bens of Connemara.
No matter what the talk, this was a hard place to keep the mind still, the clouds scudding across the far mountains, squalls racing the water. At the back was a cluttered hall and a bedroom whose doors opened to a garden hedged against the salt winds of the Atlantic. On spring days Tim and Máiréad lay in bed and waited for the robin to feed from the dish of crumbs they kept beside the bed.
Robinson was elected to the Royal Irish Academy in 2010. His maps of the Aran islands, the Burren and Connemara – places he referred to as the “ABC of earth wonders” – are little miracles of collective assembly, combining topography, language, geology, myth and physics. Robinson was acutely conscious of the damage, both representative and real, that centuries of conflict over land and language had caused. A Land Without Shortcuts, his Parnell lecture in Cambridge in 2011, while he was visiting Parnell fellow at Magdalene College, was a manifesto of his belief that attention to the local invited wonder at the universal. In Robinson’s last book, Experiments on Reality (2019), he reflected that the “course of evolution that brought us forth from cosmic dust is a sequence of marvels the contemplation of which has dazzled and delighted me my whole life”.
From 2006 to 2014 he donated much of his archive material, including photographs, manuscripts, place name records and correspondence with other writers, to the James Hardiman Library at the National University of Ireland Galway.
For decades the Robinsons kept a flat in West Hampstead in London, where Tim wrote and to where they moved in late 2015 due to increasing ill-health. Máiréad died two weeks before Tim; he is survived by his brother, Nigel.

Traveling Round-up: Summer Vacation recommendations
If you’re wondering just where to go to your summer vacation, help is at hand. This post is filled with inspiration for destinations, all of these advocated last year by bloggers that travelled there. To Europe, from the united kingdom, to further afield, there are a number of holiday options here. Do click on the respective site titles to read the destination posts.
UK
Pembrokeshire
Sarah Ebner, who blogs in Family Travel Times says ‘Pembrokeshire is indeed stunning — brilliant for a family vacation. It’s beautiful and the beaches are excellent, and there are plenty of household things to do in seeing with Pembroke castle into top complexes in heatherton!’
Alloway
Trish Burgess, aka Mum’s gone into…. Enjoyed a vacation in Scotland this past year and says: ‘Just how about daily in Alloway, the birthplace of Robert Burns? The drive up the shore was beautiful about the day of a summer. Alloway is a village along with its connections with Burns makes it a very intriguing destination: families will love it.’
Orkney
Janice in Scots2Travel recommends Orkney. She says: ‘wildlife that is inquisitive, world renowned history and archaeology, Fantastic beaches and a larder that is wonderful. Getting there by @NLFerries and Easy to drive around is an experience too!’
Isles of Scilly
Katy Stern blogs in Otis and Us and she says: ‘We loved the Isles of Scilly. You feel like you have stepped back in time when you arrive. With its turquoise seas, bright sand laid back honesty stalls and vibes in the streets. We’d return in a heartbeat.’
Devon
Shobha George of all Just Go Places says: ‘My children loved the Saunton Sands hotel in Devon. We travelled for a weekend and we had 2 sunny days which were glorious with miles of sandy beach to play. On the last day the heavens opened but we moved from the pool and had a blast. In case your children prefer pools into the 14, there is also an outdoor pool. The route down to Saunton Sands beach goes straight from the front of the hotel. There are surf schools that teach children.’
Lucy Mackcracken of all Momma Mack, can also be a Devon lover. She says: ‘I would recommend a vacation to North Devon, we found there were plenty of items to do to all weathers and for all ages.’
Yorkshire
Jo Addison of all Kiddieholidays says: ‘Quieter than the Yorkshire Dales, however, equally striking, ” the North York Moors is a national park in North Yorkshire renowned for its enormous expanses of purple heather, woods, moorland and dramatic 26 mile shore. The North York Moors has all of it; beachfront cities, unforgettable wildlife encounters Malton, and also the most Dalby Forest, among the capitals of the United Kingdom. There are a number of fantastic family friendly cycling trails and it is also close to the historical town of York.’
Europe
France
Nell Heshram blogs at The Pigeon Pair Me and she says: ‘La Garangeoire is a famous vacation park in the Vendée, France. It’s a great sense, with kids biking around until late at night, also sessions for adults in the 18th-Century manor house of the park. We travelled with Eurocamp, along with the kids’ club was outstanding: the summer vacation kids’ club we’ve experienced so far.’
Corsica
Karen in Mini Travellers recommends Corsica for 10 different motives (which you can read in her article), but she says that she’d particularly recommend it since it is an absolutely stunning mixture of French devotion, and just 2 hours from the united kingdom.’
Croatia
Kate Sutton of all Wit Wit Woo claims she urges Croatia. She says: ‘It provides beautiful island-hopping, beaches, beaches and interesting cities. Something for Everybody.’
Italy
Lisa of all Travel Loving Family loved visiting the Lakes. She says: ‘My loved ones and I fell head over heels in love with Lake Maggiore in the Lakes. It provides so much for families including trips, private islands beaches, watersports and cable car rides into neighbouring Switzerland and is a truly stunning area of the world.’
Ireland
Natalie Tyler blogs in Crazy little thing called love, and she says: ‘My article is about a trip to Dublin which I highly recommend it’d wonderful places to visit and turned into a gorgeous town to keep in. We found some places to eat along with the scenery was magnificent.’
Travel round-up: summer vacation recommendations
Spain
Chloe blogs in Sorry About The Mess and she says ‘I would 100% recommend the Costa Brava for a summer vacation. Beautiful beaches, wonderful meals, culture, and just a trip away. We loved there.’
Menorca
My blog will be Mums do journey along with my recommendation is Menorca. Last year I moved for the first time on a blogger trip, and I loved it. It’s undoubtedly and a gorgeous, relaxing, unspoilt place somewhere which I’d love to return to with my loved ones.
Megan Morgan of Truly Madly Kids agrees. She says ‘I urge Menorca, using its bays and warm seas and a lot of family-friendly areas.’
Mallorca
Laura Moore of all Mum to some mission says: ‘I would recommend Mallorca for anybody, but particularly for families with a handicapped child. It’s a gorgeous island with plenty to do, fantastic food and lots of beaches.’
Slovenia
Cath — aka BattleMum — says: ‘I would urge Lake Bled in Slovenia. We and our toddler visited a few years ago and while we had been hesitant about a vacation, it prove to be excellent. There’s plenty to do with children of all ages. You may swim in it. And Bled Cake will never be overlooked. A castle is as well as the monastery in the middle of the lake would be worth the gondola ride across. You can hire a boat and throw. Either way I highly recommend Lake Bled.’
Greece
Sarah Christie of Extraordinary Chaos says: ‘For ultimate luxury and a fine dining experience Sani Dunes is the perfect spot for a family trip. Sani Resorts are arranged offering endless dining choices. But also offer you the chance to escape and watch the real Greece. Should you want to keep fit to keep off those holiday pounds for wellbeing yoga paddle boarding and there is a complete schedule of classes.’
Further afield
Cape Verde
Cathy Winston of all Mummy Travels recommends Cape Verde. She says: ‘It’s difficult to top a glowing island for a vacation with children, but if you’re looking for somewhere a bit Cape Verde is ideal. We seen Sal, among the selection of islands off the shore of West Africa, where you are able to spot lemon creatures, float in a salt lagoon and find colourful villages. Strong breezes imply that temperatures stay during the summer around the high 20s and the sea is better for paddling also, and there are a number of lovely resorts right on the beach, with pools and children clubs, such as Melia Dunas where we remained. Among the most relaxing vacations I have taken!’
Sri Lanka
Jenny of all TraveLynn Family says: ‘We travelled to Sri Lanka last August and it’s by far among the best family vacations we’ve had! It’s in fact the rainy season on the West Coast (not that we saw any rain), but it’s the ideal season for the stunningly pristine beaches of the East Coast and hiking in the Central Highlands. Sri Lanka is super kid-friendly — children will love eating the hoppers (somewhat similar to a pancake in the shape of a flying saucer) and there are mountains where even small legs can reach the summit (our 2yo caused it into the very top of Little Adam’s Peak!)’
Cambodia
Helen Wills, ” Really Mummy, says: ‘I would definitely recommend Cambodia for a family trip this summer — it’s just this eye opening experience for a household to find together. We learned so much!’
USA
Daisy of all Dais Like These says: I would recommend the North Fork of Long Island, USA, as a dazzling destination for a summer vacation, notably the town of Greenport. The combination of fab pubs, bars and restaurants, vineyards that are stunning, close empty beaches and great weather make it a truely lovely place to head during the summertime.’
Over for you
Which of these places would you like to see? Do you have some recommendations to include for summer vacation destinations?
