Emma the Tiger Shark 1 month after I removed her 3rd hook of 4 to date using affection to gain her trust in order to remove hooks and all parasites. After opening her mouth everyday for a month to watch her wound heal, I stopped after seeing only scar tissue...a complete recovery. Scar from this hook is just inside Emmas right jaw hinge muscle (left side of picture.) She started opening her mouth when she was close enough, perhaps thinking it was a game. Sharks are definitely sentient creatures that need our help to save them from their present course... EXTINCTION! 'Legacies' EP Brett Matthews Teases How Characters Face Their Demons in Film Noir Episode (Exclusive)
Tumblr media
It's an episode you do not want to miss!
Titled "There's a Place Where the Lost Things Go," Thursday's Legacies sees Hope (Danielle Rose Russell), Josie (Kaylee Bryant), Lizzie (Jenny Boyd), MG (Quincy Fouse) and Rafael (Peyton Alex Smith) transported to a fabulous film noir world.
In order to deal with all their recent traumas -- including Kai Parker's return and a black magic-filled Josie -- Emma (Karen David) makes them participate in a group simulation where they confront their conflicts head-on or risk the game's consequences. However, like most situations, things don't go as planned and the students come face-to-face with something they never imagined.
ET caught up with executive producer Brett Matthews, who also co-wrote the episode with Mark Ryan Walberg, where he shared the inspiration for the episode, why Professor Vardemus (Alexis Denisof) has returned and teased if there could ever be something more between Hope and Rafael.
Tumblr media
ET: What was the inspiration for this episode?
Brett Matthews: It really goes back to a class I took in college at Wesleyan University... Film noir is a genre that will stay with me forever and is something very near and dear to my heart that I never really thought the right opportunity would present itself in this way to explore. I'm really glad it did. It's like an itch I had since I graduated college that I finally got to scratch.
What will surprise fans most about it? Is this a one-off episode or how will this push the narrative forward?
We don't really do one-offs. We do a lot of format break episodes, but we only do them when it's really the best way to explore the characters' journeys and the things that all of our characters are going through as they come to a head. A format break episode or a special episode will do that better than a conventional one. That's when the time's right. So absolutely we are telling this episode because it's where our characters are at coming off of [episode] 12 and 13, and really traumatic events. It's a group therapy exercise that kind of goes awry. It always starts and ends with the characters and they got us into it and the discoveries and revelations that they experience in the film noir world will come to influence them on the other side, when we're back to our normally scheduled program.
Is there a reason everyone has their distinct characters in this episode? Is there more than meets the eye with their film noir roles?
Yeah, everybody is sort of at a point in their emotional journey for the season, where they have some things they have to face, and the therapy sort of puts them in a role which allows them to make the discovery that their, sort of, person needs to learn from, move on and process. Film noir is a really good fit because it has all these tropes and archetypes and it was really fun. Mark Walberg and I, who I wrote the episode with, who's our script coordinator here, really got those characters into those different types based on where they are coming from and where they were headed for the rest of the season. That's really the "why" of who's the movie starlet, who's the gumshoe and who's this. I got to say, it was really fun to put Quincy Fouse's MJ sort of front and center in an episode. That was a really neat opportunity. We really enjoyed to be able to do that.
Tumblr media
We see Alexis Denisof's Professor Vardemus back, I thought he was gone? Am I wrong? What's his role in this?
[Ryan] Clark took Vardemus' identity at the beginning of the season and [this episode] sort of gives us the answer to where Vardemus has been this whole season, which is his mind has been locked in the therapy box and his body has been stowed in the school. And inadvertently, the kids end up setting him free and we finally look forward to getting to know the character of Vardemus as Vardemus, and not someone pretending to be him. [We will learn] who he actually is, a scholar with a bit of an edge, who's lived a really interesting life, but has a really great amount of knowledge to share with Alaric and other educators at the Salvatore School. We just really love Alexis and what he did with the character, so we're excited to begin exploring this new facet and get to know the actual Rupert Vardemus.
So he will be sticking around for more episodes?
Yeah, we hope so. We obviously have a lot of characters to service and that's always the hard part about running a television show, there's never enough time. But Vardemus is just a character [we love], and Alexis is one of the kindest, most professional actors you hope to work with in this business. [Creator] Julie [Plec] and I really love what he's doing and he is a character you will see pop up here and there, and we would love to explore more in the future.
Landon is not in this episode, but we see Rafael and Hope together. How much tension is there between them and is this foreshadowing them getting closer in the future?
I think that Raf's takeaway from this episode is that he is part of a very deep mystery that disturbs him and that he needs to get to the bottom of, and obviously feels uncomfortable enough about it that he is lying to people about it. And so, that is sort of what's forefront in Rafael's mind, but he does have this deep relationship with Hope and a super neat and profound relationship with Landon. Both of those characters will help him unwrap and get to the bottom of, and hopefully solve, the situation he's found himself in.
Tumblr media
We've seen Josie, Kaylee Bryant, just come out of her shell this season, from a sweet, kind and shy girl to this badass, evil villain. How has it been working with and getting that dynamic range from her?
Kaylee is a wonderful actress and it's not real hard. Dark Josie really makes a lot of sense because it's just that repressed part of the character she usually plays. Josie is a selfless character and puts others above herself, and I think it's a very human thing to have that part that says, "What about me?" or somebody always putting off their own wants and desires, and that often comes to a head and people often snap. That's a little bit of what she's going through. So I think for her it's probably a little more hand and glove than it would be for somebody coming from the outside in because our actors really do inhabit their characters and live in their skin year-round in a way another person doesn't. I think it made a lot of sense to her and then to translate that to the physicality and the surface menace of it all. I think she's doing a great job with it.
How was the cast's reaction when they saw this script for this episode and started getting into their wardrobe?
I think they always enjoy the format break episodes because they allow them to really just do something fun and exciting, and I feel like the whole crew feels that way about it as well. Like Julie said, when I gave her the script, she's like, "They're not going to know what film noir is," and I said, "Well, I don't know if it's that large of a problem." But we did pull a couple landmark film noir episodes that we thought really encapsulated the genre and everybody watched them and did their homework and very quickly, whether they had prior experience with the genre or not, understood what it was and really gave it 110 percent, as did our director Mike Karasick. But the cast, like they usually do, gave it their all and made it shine. I'm sure it was fun for them because of wardrobe and they got to be in another world for an episode and those are always fun for everybody.
Will fans get to see another themed episode like this in the future?
We'll have another one or two over the course of the season. We're doing a really big, exciting musical episode this year, as we try to do one every year. So we're working on that one now and that's something that sort of revisits our history as a franchise. We're very excited about that. So you can definitely look forward to that one and seeing all your favorite characters singing and dancing and all that good stuff.
Last question, both Ian Somerhalder and Michael Malarkey told ET that they would love to work on Legacies. Ian wanted to direct an episode, while Michael wouldn't mind reprising his role as Enzo. What are your thoughts?
I love both of those guys! They are part of our family and like we say to all our members of our family, the door on Legacies is always open. All they gotta do is give me a call and I will certainly, always take that call. I'll always be interested. In terms of characters, you want to make sure that you have enough, you know, like, Vampire Diaries and The Originals, they had their own endings. So just on a character level, it's always a case-by-case basis to make sure that they're respecting the integrity of our cast, but god, if there's a way to do any of those things, we're always inclined to do them. It's just the people you know and the relationships you form and that makes up for the long hours and all these things. We're very lucky people to have worked with so many wonderful, talented artists and we would love to work with them all again in the future.
Legacies airs Thursdays at 9 p.m. on The CW.

Now We Know How The Vampire Diaries' Kai Parker Will Return on Legacies
Tumblr media
Praise the Gemini Coven, we may have just figured out how Kai Parker (Chris Wood) will return on Legacies! Though it's going to be very bad news for Josie (Kaylee Bryant), Lizzie (Jenny Boyd), and Alaric (Matthew Davis).
For those fans unaware, Kai Parker is Josie and Lizzie's evil uncle, who once upon a time terrorized Mystic Falls and its inhabitants, until Bonnie (Kat Graham) locked him away in a prison world. She also happened to have had the help of tiny Lizzie and Josie (They were just 5-years-old at the time). He's been there ever since, but now... he's got company.
Thanks to the nefarious Alyssa Chang (Olivia Liang) and a very old vendetta of hers, the new ascendant Lizzie and Josie created to send Josie's dark magic hourglass away ended up linked to the original ascendant that was the key to Kai's prison world. Through some sleight of hand, Alyssa managed to send not only Alaric, but also Lizzie and Josie to that prison as vengeance for Alaric stealing her memories of accidentally killing her own parents.
That's not even the worst part though! It turns out, Alaric and Emma (Karen David) have been sending "bad" students there over the years when it became clear they could not rehabilitate them. They nearly even sent Alyssa there when she started hurting other students, and they totally did send Sebastian (Thomas Doherty) there when he revealed his true intentions towards Lizzie. That means that every witch, werewolf, and vampire that Alaric and Emma played judge, jury, and executioner with was essentially fed to Kai in that prison world if he's been roaming free over there.
Can you imagine what he could do with years of siphoned magic from those students? Let alone the hourglass full of Josie's dark magic? We shudder to even think!
Unfortunately, we're not supposed to see Kai again until Episode 12, which is still two weeks away, so next week's Valentine's Day-themed episode might not be graced with his presence (at least not until the very last minute). In the meantime, we'll just have to hope that he's gotten over his little grudge against Alaric and the twins. Yeah, we already know it's wishful thinking.
Legacies airs Thursdays at 9/8c on The CW.

Legacies Review – Dark Josie Rises Ahead of the Merge (2×14)
Tumblr media
Forget virtual reality, students at the Salvatore School entered a simulation to process their trauma.
Emma transported them into a shared reality aka a film noir-themed chambre de chasse, an invention from the real Professor Vardemus, that would allow them to face their inner demons.
The rules were simple — upon completing their task and learning their lesson, they would get a safe word that would pull them out of the game.
Once in the game, it initially became a classic whodunnit with MG as the key detective working to crack a murder.
But when Emma got killed and pulled out of the game despite being the gamekeeper, she knew something was terribly wrong.
One-by-one, the players began getting killed off. After Emma, the real Vardemus (who comically believed he was Sherlock Holmes in the simulation) was gunned down before Jade succumbed to cyanide poisoning.
After gaining his consciousness, Vardemus rightfully declared that someone was harnessing black magic and had rewritten the rules.
Vardemus wrote down “Josie” before he got killed, but Josie was gunned down in front of MG. And while it wasn’t her, it was a part of her. It wasn’t long before we figured out that Dark Josie was running rampant in the simulation.
Her goal was to eliminate everyone so that only she and Lizzie we left behind to face each other. While the Josie we all know and love would never hurt her sister and proved it by protecting her in the simulation, Dark Josie was ready to end her so that she could win the merge and put this all behind her.
I’ve always wondered how the merge would play out between the Saltzman sisters because they are such forces of nature, but introducing Dark Josie was the only way to keep the balance. Josie may be the stronger sister in theory, but her love for Lizzie and her insecurities would never allow her to prevail without a darker side of her being forced out.
Dark Josie’s plan didn’t work in the simulation because Hope thwarted it and shot Josie while saving Lizzie, which speaks to their blossoming and pure friendship. Even without her memory, Hope came through for Lizzie.
Tumblr media
While Emma’s little therapy game didn’t go as planned, some good definitely came out of it.
MG realized he needs to stop viewing himself as a side-kick and become more confident while Lizzie learned she’s too self-centered and uses people when it benefits her. And in those growing pains, the two cemented a friendship that’s stronger than any feelings MG might have for her. We’d love MG to get his happy ending, but this dynamic between them is easily one of the best parts of the series.
Another major revelation was that Dark Josie isn’t going anywhere. Josie and her alter-ego were both gunned down in the simulation, but Dark Josie was the only one that returned to the real world and she was more powerful than anyone expected.
She put Hope to sleep with the twist of a neck, levitated out of the little mystical prison, and burnt down the school (thanks to some meh CGI effects) leaving it in flames as she walked away.
Josie, out. She’s the newest supervillain and far more interesting than the monster-of-the-week, plus, her actions will likely impact the storyline in a greater way especially as we near the dreaded merge.
How will the super squad deal with this one? I can’t even blame Emma and Dorian for packing their bags and leaving the school in their rearview mirror because she’s right, it’s always going to be dangerous.
Hope and Raf’s lessons weren’t as positive as MG and Lizzie’s. With Hope choosing to save a stranger over catching her bus to visit Landon in California in the simulation, she deduced that her relationship would forever be doomed. There would always be some obstacle that came between her and Landon, and she’d have to make a choice that wasn’t him.
We all wish we could console Hope and tell her that everything will be just fine, but you have to admit, it’s a pretty accurate description of what’s been happening lately. Maybe the lesson is that Landon can take care of himself and doesn’t need Hope to constantly worry about him.
But I fear that the very fact that she was talking to Raf about this means that there are some emotions brewing there under the surface that they’ll explore sooner rather than later.
Raf, on the other hand, got some insight into what happened to him when he was found after being “kidnapped.” In the photos he developed in the simulation, he saw the Necromancer, which he needs to take as a dark omen. Don’t keep that to yourself, Raf! Warn the others!
It’s safe to say that after exiting a black and white world, everyone found themselves looming in the gray areas unsure of what their revelations meant or how to proceed.
Unable to help his daughter from being overcome by the dark magic inside, Alaric found himself in the grayest area of all.
Does this mean it’s time to call in Caroline with reinforcements? The merge cannot happen without a guest-appearance from Candace Accola!
What did you think of the film noir theme?
Are you glad we circled back to Dark Josie? What kind of havoc will she wreak on the Salvatore School and the people that love her?

‘Legacies’ season 2, episode 14 review: Noir in more ways than one
Tumblr media
It feels so damn good to be back in Mystic Falls again! Legacies season 2, episode 14 brought the dark, but also the fun. Read on for the highlights!
I’m not gonna lie, I was really excited about this episode going in. I was a little mistaken as to how the noir world was going to be set up, but watching all our faves get to play amped up versions of themselves in such a classically trope-y world was an absolute blast. I think the biggest let down was not getting to see Alaric or Landon in that world, but, like Kaleb, I guess you can’t include all the characters all the time. But I so wish we could.
Anyway, read on for all my thoughts on Legacies season 2, episode 14, “There’s a Place Where the Lost Things Go:”
Jasie anybody?
Okay, so the last thing this show needs is another possible ship, but when we first saw Jade and Josie together in Legacies season 2, episode 12 a VERY long month ago, it seemed like these two were destined to play a role in each other’s story, one way or another. Although, it looks like Dark Josie does not approve, so I’m not sure what that says about Jade as Josie’s love interest long term.
Landon needs a spotter
While I was a little sad that we didn’t get to see Aria Shahghasemi’s Landon in this episode, his presence was definitely felt in Hope’s storyline. But how adorable that he is off somewhere trying to perfect his flying technique. I really hope that there are more abilities coming for him in the near future. I mean, if wolves get to heal, run fast, hear at great distances, AND turn into wolves every full moon (and vamps get all sorts of great abilities, too), there has to be more to being a phoenix than just self-regeneration and flying, right?
Any idea why M.G. was the central character of this shared story?
Tumblr media
Is it because he was so excited to help everyone before Emma put them under? I’m just curious if there’s a greater reason. I was glad to see M.G. play a bigger role in this episode, it just surprised me a little.
Has Vardemus been in that locker THE WHOLE TIME?!
I, for one, was really happy to see Alexis Denisof back in action on Legacies, and I really hope we haven’t seen the last of him. His energy just gives something extra to Legacies, and after the events of Legacies season 2, episode 14, “There’s a Place Where the Lost Things Go,” Alaric is going to be in need of an adult ally or two.
So, I’m crossing my fingers that he’ll continue to show up here and there as season 2 goes on.
Chambre de Chasse
We first learned what a Chambre de Chasse was in The Originals, and while this specific version had a few different rules, it’s really nice to see the tradition continue. We’ve had a lot of TVD Easter eggs hanging around, especially because the show is set in Mystic Falls, so it’s nice to see something so specifically linked to The Originals make such a bold appearance.
The hair and costumes in this episode are INCREDIBLE.
Tumblr media
Like seriously great work done here. All the ladies had such different and distinct looks. From Emma’s Billie Holiday bangs to Hope’s fleur-de-lys-inspired sweater, I kept finding myself wishing I had the skills to duplicate even one of those looks for Halloween next year.
I also loved what they did for the guys, but let’s face it, the girls’ style rocked this episode. There was something really special happening with Josie’s dress and the shoulder pads that made her waist look even tinier than normal. It all just looked so gorgeous and classic noir. This was such a fun way to do a bottle episode, and it still managed to move the plot forward, too. Bravo to all involved with Legacies season 2, episode 14!
I’m glad Lizzie is self-aware about her using M.G.
I’m glad that M.G. is aware of it, too. He likes being there for Lizzie in her time of need, but he also knows that he has to step into his own and become the hero he truly is.
And this self-awareness for Lizzie is another huge step forward for her character. Seeing how selfish and self-involved she can be is vital to her learning how to put others first sometimes. She’s definitely more aware of it when it comes to her sister, but M.G. is another shining star whose light dims just a bit when Lizzie steps into the room.
Raf is definitely dead… now what?
Yeah, the fact that he’s seeing the Necromancer (in totally ridiculous yet creepy pose, btw) and has a wound stitched up and definitely not healing leads me to believe our resident wolfman is dead, but was brought back by the Necromancer. Now I need to know what this means for his longevity. If the Necromancer dies, does Raf go back to the world of the dead or wherever supernaturals go now after they die?
Jade and Raf’s role in the Chambre de Chasse
Jade was the investigative journalist Raf was supposedly working for. Was this supposed to represent the fact that Raf isn’t just Raf anymore, but a servant of the Necromancer? Or is Jade wrapped up in his storyline somehow, too? Raf’s definitely not working for her, but there’s still so much we don’t know about Jade at this point, I wouldn’t be surprised if she was tangled up in the Necromancer side of things, too, somehow.
Bye bye, Emma?
I’m sad that this seems to be Emma’s goodbye. Hopefully she will reprise her role again sometime in the future, but I will definitely miss her presence in the series if this is it for her. However, if Karen David’s absence makes room for Candice King to step back into Caroline’s shoes and into Legacies for the first time, that I could live with. Only time will tell, though. (But I really, really, really, REALLY hope that Caroline makes an appearance sometime soon!)
Were the words they all saw in the noir world a spell or something?
Liquet. Caecus. Heros. Mortem. Fatum.
The five words we saw that triggered all of them into self-awareness. Vardemus read “Liquet” which is latin for clear. Lizzie read “Caecus” which means blind. M.G. read “Heros” which means man of superhuman strength or physical courage. Raf read “Mortem” which just means dead (definitely a spoiler, lol). And lastly, Hope read “Fatum” which appears to mean either weird or fate.
I’m leaning toward fate on that one. If the words are simply just descriptors of the lessons each of them learned, then that explains that. But I’m curious if the combination of these words could have greater significance down the line.
Josie and Jade didn’t see words. They just died. Interesting.
Tumblr media
Damn. Josie’s got some power at her disposal
It definitely seemed understood that sending everyone back through the portal from the prison world was supposed to burn up a lot of the dark magic in Josie. We knew that she had at least some residual dark magic still in her right before our month-long hiatus, but I didn’t think she’d have the power levels that she displayed at the end of Legacies season 2, episode 14.
Choice vs. Destiny
I’m starting to wonder if one of TVD‘s most recurring themes has wormed its way into the heart and soul of Legacies. We experienced a lot of instances of choice versus fate with Elena and Damon and Stefan throughout the years, but Hope’s desperation to be able to choose Landon over everything else makes me think we’re headed toward more discussion of this grand theme.
And that’s it for Legacies season 2, episode 14. Any thoughts to share? Leave them below!

Legacies EP Talks [Spoiler]'s Return, Dark Josie's 'Dangerous' Next Move
Tumblr media
After escaping a black-and-white world on Thursday’s Legacies, Hope & Co. found themselves navigating some serious gray area.
To help the students of the Salvatore School work through their ongoing issues, Emma transported their collective consciousness into a noir-themed chambre de chasse, a brilliant invention of the real Professor Vardemus. (Side note: “chambre de chasse” is probably my least favorite word in the entire TVD-verse, if only because I have to Google its correct spelling every single time.)
“We explored a lot of different [genre] options,” executive producer Brett Matthews, who wrote this episode along with Mark Ryan Walberg, tells TVLine. “We looked at western, we looked at steam punk and we looked at the Victorian era [before landing on noir].”
What ensued was a classic whodunnit, featuring MG as an ace detective investigating a potential murder plot against Lizzie, now a famous Hollywood starlet. Though everyone learned important lessons about themselves throughout the process — including Lizzie admitting that she’s been too self-centered and MG realizing that he needs to have more faith in himself — the most game-changing revelation was that Dark Josie, who used her magic to overpower and manipulate the experiment, is officially here to stay.
“The next episode is really about the kids at school dealing with the Dark Josie problem, and it is a capital-P Problem,” Matthews tells TVLine. “Dark Josie is going to make her presence known and her want known, and it is going to put all of our characters in a very dangerous situation. She sort of declared herself as a super villain at the end of Episode 14, and in Episode 15, she starts proving why. Episode 15 will bring some pretty bold moves that will have major impacts on the show moving forward.”
On a slightly more upbeat note, this week’s episode revealed that the real Vardemus has been trapped on campus in a gym locker this whole time. His consciousness was also sucked into the chambre de chasse, so when his character died in the noir fantasy, he awoke in the real world.
“We love Alexis [Denisof], and that’s a love affair that goes back to the Buffy days when I was a production assistant,” Matthews says. “It’s a joy to have him around, and he’s been a really good fit, so we really wanted to keep him in our universe. This begins an interesting chapter for that character, certainly. We’re at an exciting tipping point in the season where we’re cresting that last big rollercoaster drop. Now, things start coming together really quickly — and Vardemus is a big part of that.”
Let’s discuss: Did Dark Josie’s explosive exit leave you as shook as the literal structure of the Salvatore School? Drop a comment with your thoughts on this week’s Legacies below.
