Kai Parker returns for the 'supernatural Hunger Games' in Legacies first-look photo
Tumblr media
“Welcome to the supernatural Hunger Games.”
Kai Parker (Chris Wood) utters that line in Legacies’ upcoming two-parter (starting Feb. 6), which features the return of his delicious Vampire Diaries villain. (And this time he has a beard!)
Kai first appeared in season 6 of The Vampire Diaries, as a member of the Gemini coven so evil they used magic to lock him in a prison dimension with no one to talk to (or harm). But you can’t keep a good villain trapped for long. Not only did Kai return for Vampire Diaries’ final season, but now, nearly two years later, Lizzie (Jenny Boyd) and Josie Saltzman (Kaylee Bryant) are about to meet their uncle, and EW has the exclusive first look at his return.
“The prison world is inescapable up until now, so it’s not so much how he comes back into our fold as how we enter his,” Legacies showrunner Julie Plec says of Kai entering the picture. “It has a lot to do with Josie and the dabbling she’s been doing with black magic. It’s a consequence of those actions that leads them to the proverbial and literal door of the prison world.”
And seeing as how this week’s episode ended with the twins and Ric trapped in said prison world, it’s only a matter of time before the family members are reunited. However, a typical family reunion this is not. After all, this is the man who tried to kill the twins in utero and did kill their biological mom. According to Plec, the experience of meeting Kai will “rattle” the twins, particularly Josie, who sees him as “a mirror of what could be if she’s not careful.”
And no matter what he says or how he looks, know this: Kai hasn’t changed. As Plec puts it, “He’s forever an irredeemable a—hole… but he’s one of our favorites.”
Legacies airs Thursdays at 9 p.m. ET on the CW.

‘Legacies’ season 2 won’t be complete until we deal with this prophecy
Tumblr media
We’ve seen Santa do battle with the Krampus, and met Alyssa Chang since then, but there’s still the matter of this Legacies prophecy to deal with. Here’s what we think lies ahead for everyone.
Okay, so, we know Legacies season 2 still has some major developments coming down the pike. Kai’s return in episode 12 looms pretty forebodingly, as he will undoubtedly bring Merge talk back to the forefront as well as his usual brand of chaotic energy. We also know that Josie will have to deal with the dark magic rumbling around inside the mora miserium. It doesn’t look like that’s going to end well, but there’s always a chance that those visions were warnings rather than foretellings of what will happen.
But, despite those items looming large on the horizon, we also have a prophecy that must be kept in mind. One or two of these will probably be seen and felt soon-ish, but I think other lines will continue to hang over the heads of everyone at the Salvatore School like the ring of a funeral bell.
Here are a few of our thoughts on that prophecy, line by line:
‘There are two prisoners’
Tumblr media
This is pretty damn generic, but since we know that the Necromancer and Kai are both still alive, and that both have served as prisoners, either of Malivore or a prison world designed especially for them, they are more than likely our two prisoners.
However, if this, like so many prophecies before it, is leaving the word prisoner open to interpretation, this could also mean someone trapped in their circumstances or body instead of a literal prison.
If this is meant to be more of a symbolic prison, there is a possibility that either Raf or M.G. could be described as prisoners. Raf is technically a prisoner in his wolf body, forced to turn at every full moon, and since he’s still feeling some of the effects of having spent so much time in his wolf form, he’s feeling more trapped than ever. And M.G.’s discovery of his ripper nature is definitely a possible prison for him, too. Stefan definitely thought of his vampire nature as a bit prison-esque, so it wouldn’t be that far off.
‘One is the master of his cage.’
If we consider Kai to be one of the prisoners, then this could be describing him in his prison world. He’s been there a long time, so he could possibly found ways to make it work for him. Or, since he’s the only one there, he could be deemed the master of his prison by default.
However, if we consider the other options, maybe this is referring to M.G., instead. Trapped in his vampire body with no way out, he has had time to master his vampire powers, but, since he doesn’t have perfect control over his ripper side, it’s still his prison.
‘The other returns home without power.’
The Necromancer was returned to the world without any of his original powers, so this could definitely be referring to him.
But, again, if we look deeper, this could also be referring to Raf. Raf was returned to the land of the living, to the human world, and felt powerless to help himself. He has also recently returned home to his father, but is powerless to solve the issue of his mother running away all those years ago.
Legacies season 2 has a lot of variables up in the air right now regarding this prophecy. It could definitely refer to the obvious, almost generic possibilities, but it could also cause some serious problems if the sphinx was talking about our faves.
‘The sins of the fathers are visited upon the daughters here and not here.’
Tumblr media
The obvious daughters to consider for this part of the Legacies prophecy are Josie, Lizzie, and Hope. I’m leaning toward this being a little more related to Lizzie and Josie rather than Hope, simply because daughters is plural, and there have been a few more egregious sins from Alaric that could come back to bite him.
First there’s the confrontations he had with Vardemus. I definitely don’t think Clark is dead, so when Malivore’s first born returns, he could bring with him something to punish Alaric by hurting Josie and/or Lizzie. Also, we just watched Alaric silence Sebastian in Legacies season 2, episode 9. That could definitely also play a role here. As far as the “here and not here” business goes, I’ll start to truly worry if one of the twins leaves to visit Caroline or something. Unless this could be regarding Elena Gilbert, who Alaric once saw as a daughter…
‘New hero rises, but can be felled by the golden arrow.’
I’m SUPER curious about this line. I would like to think this is referring to Landon, especially since we heard a whole lot of “I’m a sidekick, not a hero.” coming from him in the last episode. I would like to think that one or more of his phoenix abilities kicks in and he morphs into a hero before our very eyes. And since he’s a phoenix, AKA a bird, it wouldn’t surprise me if the golden arrow could be used against him.
The golden arrow part could also refer to someone using his love for Hope against him. If someone threatens her or uses her to threaten him, that would also be a way to fell Landon by the golden arrow.
‘The wolf among you has many faces.’
Tumblr media
We have a lot of wolves floating around, so this is the most unclear line for me. Between Raf, Jed, the pack, and Hope, this could be referring to any of them.
However, wolves are often referred to as predators that hide in plain sight, a la the figure of speech, “a wolf in sheep’s clothing.” In that case, Clark literally wearing other faces could come into play here, especially if we see him resurrected in the next couple of episodes.
‘When time fractures, darkness overwhelms.’
Tumblr media
When the mora miserium, AKA the sand clock, breaks, the dark magic will spill and overwhelm both Josie, and, according to those flash forwards in the last episode, the school by means of flame. This is probably the most straight forward of all the points of this Legacies prophecy. I can’t think of many more interpretations that would make as much sense as this one.
‘But the greatest destroyer of all is love.’
This could definitely be referencing the earlier line about the new hero being able to be felled by the golden arrow, but, ultimately, I think this just means that someone is going to be left without someone they love. And that absence is going to destroy some part of them irrevocably.
Do you have a different interpretation of this ‘Legacies’ season 2 prophecy?

Chris Wood Reflects on The Vampire Diaries' Best Villain as Kai Returns on Legacies
Tumblr media
Kai Parker is back, and he hasn't changed a bit.
Tonight's episode of Legacies welcomes back Chris Wood as The Vampire Diaries' most infamous, most evil bad guy. He's been trapped in a prison world created by his witch nieces for the past decade, but in "Kai Parker Screwed Us," he's ready to party once again.
A couple of episodes ago, Alaric (Matthew Davis), Josie (Kaylee Bryant), and Lizzie (Jenny Boyd) found themselves trapped in the prison world, all because of the very annoying Alyssa Chang (Olivia Liang), which means they have to contend with whatever else is down there, including their worst nightmare Kai Parker.
Even if you haven't seen The Vampire Diaries in a while, it's hard to forget that wedding scene, where Alaric's pregnant wife Jo was murdered by her twin brother Kai. Kai then later tried to kill Alaric's daughters (who had been magically transported as fetuses into Caroline Forbes, very normal), so you can understand why this family hates him with everything they've got.
Chris Wood says that wedding murder is his favorite evil thing Kai did.
"I mean, it's really, really evil, but that whole wedding thing was pretty dreadful, where he killed his entire family," he told us over the phone. "And I think the reason i would cite that is because it may be the biggest smile we've ever seen on his face in the moment when he's doing it, and that was very fun to play. That's really dark and awful, but it was a great episode."
Wood said he didn't have much trouble getting back into character for Kai, mostly thanks to the writing and the fact that Kai is the kind of completely deranged person who would be thrilled to murder his entire family at a wedding.
"He has kind of no boundaries in terms of what is OK, and what is normal behavior, and he's such an eccentric that he's very freeing as an actor to play him," he says. "No choice is really wrong with him, and the wrong choice would be not making a big one, so that part was easy to rediscover because it's like, oh yeah, I can do whatever I want."
Tumblr media
Kai has truly done some of the worst things that anyone ever did on The Vampire Diaries, but we all love him anyway for some reason. Wood can only guess why.
"I honestly don't know. I don't know if I should be concerned," he said, laughing. "I think what's so fun about it is how irredeemable he is, paired with how goofy he is. On a surface level, he seems like kind of awkward and annoying and his sense of humor is really strange. But then he's done all these atrocious things, some of the worst things the history of the Vampire Diaries universe. I mean, he essentially killed Elena. He's pretty terrible."
(For the record, Kai just put a really mean eternal slumber curse on her while Nina Dobrev left the show, but she did get to wake up in the series finale.)
Legacies isn't used to monsters like Kai. He's not an evil Cupid or a dragon or even on the level of the Necromancer, but he's a beast all his own, with a much deeper in-show history than any of the big bads have had before.
"Honestly it was so great to be that sort of unique monster, because the show has a very different approach to this Salvatore-based universe," Wood says. "Kai is very different from anyone they've ever dealt with, and also he has, you know, not to quote the title of the show, but he has this deep legacy where all the characters there have heard the horror stories and know how awful he was. It just presents a really different interaction with a monster, because he is a monster, just one in human form."
Tumblr media
He's also a monster who killed Alaric's wife and Josie and Lizzie's mother, so while he's technically the twins' uncle and this is technically a family reunion, it's not a happy one at all. You can imagine how Alaric will react to his greatest enemy: badly.
"[The reunion] is every bit as confusing and full of anger and spite as you would imagine that it would be," Wood says. "Kai loves nothing more than a toy, and for him, someone to play mind games with, to torture, to trick, I mean that's when he feels things. So that's his one fuzzy place is ruining people's equilibrium, so it's full of that."
Josie in particular finds herself going head to head with Kai in unexpected ways, and Wood says the teen witch surprises her evil uncle a little bit, in a way that's almost not so horrible. Almost. Sort of.
"Kai at first still views her as that little kid, the one death that got away. He at first thinks it's going to be easy, and that she's stupid, and he can just get her to do whatever, and then I think there's a weird pride that eventually comes up when he starts to see her fight back and trying to outsmart him," he says. "But you know it's the Kai Parker brand of pride, because it still involves wanting to chop her head off."
Will Kai chop Josie's head off? Will he murder another entire family? Will he prompt another deranged storyline about unborn babies moving wombs, or will he surprise us all and do something brand new?
You'll have to wait until tonight's episode to find out!
Legacies airs at 9 p.m. on The CW.

Legacies Recap: Who Didn't Survive Kai's Assault on the Salvatore School?
Tumblr media
Revenge, redemption and red-hot revelations were all on the menu Thursday as Hope and her friends — plus a few reluctant frenemies — fought to defend their school against Legacies‘ sassiest, most menacing monster yet: Kai Parker.
Masquerading as an old friend of Alaric’s named Joshua (“I was at his wedding, I brought quite the gift!”), Kai infiltrated the facility with minimal effort, though he did need to compel someone to invite him inside. (Am I the only person who kinda, sorta forgot he’s a heretic now?)
Under the guise of an equal “team-up,” he convinced Alyssa Chang (“Big fan of your work!”) to untether him from his prison world, thereby destroying the realm and everyone in it. (He conveniently forgot to tell her about that second part. Oops?) He also compelled Dorian to drag Landon out into the woods, where a crimson-robed archer — presumably The Necromancer — was waiting to shoot him with that prophetic golden arrow.
And here’s the kicker: While all of this was going down, Kai distracted Hope long enough that she only had time to stop one atrocity from occurring, forcing her to choose between saving Landon or the Saltzmans. She chose (gasp!) the Saltzmans, successfully convincing Alyssa to stop her untethering spell before she wiped them from existence.
Fortunately, Landon never really needed his “co-hero” in the first place! Dorian magically (and somewhat questionably) snapped out of his trance in time to take the arrow for Landon, nearly dying in the process. Fortunately, our little baby phoenix grew a majestic pair of fiery wings and flew Dorian back to the school, where he received the life-saving treatment he needed.
Elsewhere this week…
* After helping Alaric and Jade rescue Lizzie from her nasty little fender bender, Dark Josie explained the terms of their exit from the prison world: She could siphon enough magic to create a portal, but one person would need to stay behind and serve as an anchor. Alaric volunteered, but Sebastian popped up at the last minute to take his place. “It’s like I was trying to tell you the night you shot me — some people don’t know what to do with a second chance!” he told Alaric. “I put Elizabeth in danger. If you wish to thank me, take care of her.” (D’aww! Guys, I don’t think Landon isn’t the only “new hero” who rose up this week.)
* Via the magic of astral projection, Lizzie told Sebastian that he might be able to escape the prison world by jumping into Malivore, just as Kai did last week. But that would have also caused Lizzie to forget that Sebastian ever existed, and since she seemed pretty depressed in the episode’s final moments, my guess is that he didn’t make it out.
* Speaking of those final moments, I was honestly relieved to see that the darkness didn’t leave Josie upon her escape from the prison world. Not that I don’t enjoy original-flavor Josie, but Dark Josie is fun.
* Let’s end with the most surprising development of the week: Kai’s beheading! I mean, it’s not like the murderous maniac didn’t have it coming — and I’m certainly glad that Alaric was the one who got to do it, evoking Jo’s name in the process — but I’m just shocked that they actually decided to kill him off. (For the record, I know this isn’t even the first time Kai has been beheaded, so there’s always a chance he’ll appear again, but that felt… pretty final.)
OK, time to give us your thoughts on this week’s Legacies. Kai’s death? Landon’s wings? Dark Josie? Rafael waking up in that random trailer? Whatever’s on your mind, drop it in a comment below.

Legacies Sneak Peek: Hope Is Desperate to Save the Saltzmans from Kai's Prison World
youtube
Hope Mikaelson (Danielle Rose Russell) has come a long way since her loner days in Season 1 of Legacies. After mending a complicated relationship with Josie (Kaylee Bryant) and Lizzie (Jenny Boyd), and securing her own epic romance with Landon (Aria Shahghasemi), the powerful tribrid is now fighting to save her friends — even if that means risking her own life.
In an exclusive sneak peek at tonight's episode, Hope relays to Landon her plan to astroproject herself into the prison world where Alaric (Matthew Davis), Josie, and Lizzie are currently trapped thanks to Alyssa Chang's (Olivia Liang) last-minute betrayal. Her idea sounds great in theory, until you realize it also has the potential to backfire if she somehow cannot find her way back. It's a tall order for a Mikaelson, but these are desperate times and she'll try anything to bring her friends and surrogate dad back. However, it might not even come to that. Dorien (Demetrius Bridges) interjects with a new plan that just might save everyone, and for everyone's sake, we hope it works.
In the episode, baring the unsettling title "You Can't Save Them All," Hope finds herself in a race against the clock as that pesky prophecy looms to save the Saltzmans. Meanwhile, in the prison world, Alaric must make a difficult decision to save his family.
Legacies airs Thursdays at 9/8c on the CW.

Legacies Recap: Love Takes Flight
Tumblr media
Love — and a whole lotta lust — was in the air on Thursday’s Legacies, which celebrated Valentine’s Day early with a visit from its horniest monster yet (which, ironically, had no actual horns).
“Cupid” was first spotted gliding over the Salvatore School by Landon, whose desperation to develop actual phoenix powers has reached a new high. Or maybe it’s a new low. I mean, I appreciate his determination, but did he really think that bouncing on a small exercise trampoline would unlock some sort of flying ability?
Then again, Landon made several questionable decisions this week, including charging at the god of love while shouting, “Phoenix powers activate!” Spoiler alert: Nothing was activated. And while Hope tended to other matters, she left Landon to babysit their guest, who effortlessly escaped after realizing that his barrier had no ceiling. (That wasn’t technically Landon’s fault, but it still wasn’t a good look.)
Landon continued his trend of poor life choices by forming a not-so-super supergroup with Wade, Pedro, Jedd and a quirky witch named — wait for it — Drusilla. (Damn, this show really is a love letter to Buffy, isn’t it?) The team was formed to locate Cupid, and it did (!), but not before he feasted on the hearts of a few unsuspecting Mystic Falls townies.
That’s when things got wacky. Well, wackier. After impaling Hope with the “burning love” arrow (very bad!), the monster revealed that he’s actually Cupid’s brother Pothos. And this time, Landon got to play the hero, showing up just in time to sacrifice his heart as Pothos’ next meal. Little did the “heart-eating ass hat” know, Landon had strategically ingested Pothos’ only weakness, ensuring that it would also be his last supper.
After a busy day of saving each other’s lives, Hope and Landon yet again proved the epic-ness of their love by (finally) triggering one of Landon’s latent phoenix powers. The two literally lifted off the ground during their latest cinematic lip lock, and although Landon had some trouble remaining… uh… above the ground, it was still a very nice first flight.
Elsewhere this week…
* Emma told Dorian that she needed to be by Caroline’s side during this twin-scendant crisis, to which Dorian replied, “Caroline can call Bonnie!” We’ve heard the Bennett name invoked on Legacies before, but is this the first time Kat Graham’s Vampire Diaries character has been mentioned directly? That’s fun.
* Speaking of Emma and Dorian, the estranged exes were among Cupid’s first victims, inspiring them to visit City Hall for a quickie wedding. And they would have gotten away with it if Jedd didn’t crash their big day and propose to his teacher. Honestly, we’re not even sure if Emma and Dorian actually went through with the wedding — and neither are they.
* Part of the Sphinx’s prophecy (“A new hero rises, but can be felled by the golden arrow”) came true this week. Not only did “new hero” Landon finally leave the ground, but The Necromancer discovered a golden arrow amongst the booty he swiped from the Salvatore School. And another part of the prophecy has already come to fruition; Dorian believes that “The sins of the father will be visited upon the daughters here and not here” is a reference to the prison world currently inhabited by Lizzie, Josie and Alaric.
* Hope’s plan for MG to seduce Alyssa into revealing the location of the ascendant totally blew up in her face. Everyone’s faces, actually. Not only did Kaleb nearly murder MG for two-timing his sister, but Kym was nearly killed by a supernaturally vengeful Alyssa. Can you blame Kym for deciding to leave Mystic Falls behind? I’m surprised she was so understanding of everything in the first place.
Your thoughts on this week’s episode? Landon’s powers? The upcoming Gemini showdown? Drop ’em all in a comment below.
