With the shock overthrow of the Assad dynastic dictatorship that ruled Syria since 1971, new diplomatic opportunities are opening for the incoming administration. If President-elect Donald Trump is serious about his “ending forever wars” rhetoric, Syria offers him a chance to grab a low-hanging fruit.

Encouragingly, Trump himself seems to realize that. Commenting on Syria, he suggested that the events unfolding there are “not our fight”. He said that the “U.S. should have nothing to do with it (the situation in Syria). Let it play out. Do not get involved”. 

The Vice-President-elect JD Vance echoed this sentiment. When the neoconservative Washington Post columnist Josh Rogin categorically declared that in Syria “Freedom won[;] Russia, Iran, Hezbollah and Assad lost,” Vance admitted that such comments “made him nervous because the last time this guy was celebrating events in Syria, we saw the mass slaughter of Christians and a refugee crisis that destabilized Europe”. 

Trump-Vance’s prudence, as opposed to the wildly optimistic hawkish takes, is well advised. As Stimson Center’s Emma Ashford warned, “the track record of Arab Spring revolutions suggests a healthy amount of caution is warranted on where this is headed”.

13 de noviembre de 1967. Una solitaria figura se detiene ante la puerta principal. Era George Trevor, el popular arquitecto norteamericano responsable de su diseño y construcción.

Oswell E. Spencer lo había invitado a su inauguración, junto con su familia, como agradecimiento. Se lo tomó como un hiato antes de comenzar con la reforma de Ashford Hall solicitada por Edward Ashford, a quien había conocido por recomendación de Spencer.

Jessica, su esposa, y Lisa, su pequeña hija de 14 años recién cumplidos, serían las primeras en acudir. Luego iría él después del trabajo…

Pero al llegar, no pudo ver a su esposa e hija por ninguna parte.

Entró en la casa.

13 de noviembre de 1967

Terminé de trabajar, me fui de Nueva York y aparqué frente a la mansión por la noche, sobre las 6 p.m. El espacioso vestíbulo principal. Las ornamentadas dos escaleras que conducían al segundo piso… joder, lo echaba de menos.

Tardé cinco años en erigirla según las directrices de Spencer, mucho más de lo previsto, pero mereció la pena.

Vi a Spencer descender las escaleras a mi encuentro. Exculpó la ausencia de Jessica y Lisa explicando que se habían marchado para visitar a la tía Emma, que había caído enferma.

En el comedor de la primera planta, brindamos por la mansión. Spencer había dispuesto sobre la alargada mesa de caoba una colección de lujosos platos de fina cerámica. Arriba destacaba una estatua de Rodin colocada junto al pasamanos de la galería de la segunda planta. La estatua parecía observar el servicio con envidia.

Tratándose de una inauguración, no me imaginaba como el único invitado. Aparte del tic-tac del reloj de pared, un desolado silencio reinaba en la estancia.

Echaba de menos a Jessica y Lisa.

Spencer me contó que la fiesta inaugural se celebró hace tres días, y que Lisa tuvo la oportunidad de tocar el piano tanto como quisiera. Al parecer, había tocado la sonata para piano número catorce de Beethoven, la preferida de Spencer. Dijo que aplaudió mientras la elogiaba por su talento. Soñé despierto con la sonrisa de mi hija.

Me sentía muy solo sin ellas.

Spencer me hizo una visita guiada por el lugar. Me quedé boquiabierto con el excesivo esplendor y extravagancia de la decoración. Todo formaba parte de su colección privada.

Sin noticias de Jessica y Lisa.

No podía comunicarme con ellas porque la línea telefónica estaba sin instalar. Fui a beberme un café a la galería de la segunda planta, donde se había colado una hueste de cuervos que no paró de graznar.

Mal presagio. Tenía la sensación de que alguien me observaba. También vi algo extraño en el patio… Detrás de la catarata artificial descubrí una escalera no incorporada al diseño original.

Tres hombres vestidos con batas blancas aparecieron de repente. ¿Quién es usted? Por favor, no nos haga perder el tiempo dijo uno de ellos, como si me regañara, y me sacó de allí. Su bata blanca desprendía un ligero olor a desinfectante. ¿Y estos quiénes eran?

Perdí el mechero.

Me lo regaló mi esposa por mi cumpleaños. Creí haberlo dejado en la habitación con el rifle de caza.

¿Alguien me lo robó? ¿Jessica y Lisa no van a volver?

Estaba ansioso…

Spencer se rio cuando le comuniqué mis preocupaciones. Le aseguré que no podía soportarlo, que me marcharía para reencontrarme con ellas.

21 de noviembre de 1967

Empaqué mis cosas y me despedí de Spencer. Él me siguió hasta la primera planta y entró en una de las habitaciones.

Tras su desaparición, me topé con un hombre ataviado con una bata blanca. Miraba un cuadro. Era uno de los tres hombres del patio.

La vida es larga y a la vez tan corta, susurró. Luego sonrió y se rio.

Algo me golpeó la cabeza y quedé inconsciente.

Tres días encerrado. Es por una cuestión de seguridad dijo el hombre de la bata blanca mientras me pasaba un plato de comida cruda.

Y me di cuenta. Las dos únicas personas que conocían todos los secretos de la mansión eran Spencer y yo. Si yo muriese, Spencer sería el único.

Tenía que escapar. ¡Pero no podía zafarme de las trampas que yo mismo creé! Unas cosas se desprendieron del techo para caer sobre mí. ¡Arañas! Aplasté a varias de ellas intentando escapar.

He dado una vuelta completa. Es inútil. No puedo salir. Siento cómo mis sentidos me fallan… Jessica… Lisa… Perdonadme.

111 years since the Titanic sank.

There are many stories about the sinking of the Titanic and the people who sailed on her. This my story; originally published in Bygone Kent magazine issue:37 Number 2, over 8 pages.

The Titanic sank on the 15th April 1912. Of the 2,223 onboard, 1517 were lost.

Many were searching for a new life in the United States. One of these was 36-year-old Kate Buss 1873-1972 from Sittingbourne, Kent. She was making the journey alone to marry her Kent-born fiancé, Samuel Willis in San Diego in California. Kate survived and they married three weeks after the disaster.

Samuel Willis ran a tailor’s shop in Sittingbourne, first in the High Street and then later at 110 East Street. Kate Buss was born at 37 Shakespeare Road, Sittingbourne. In 1901 her father James Buss was listed as a grocer-postmaster at 68 Shortlands Road, Sittingbourne.

Samuel Willis sailed to America in 1908 and settled in San Diego and then opened his own grocery store. Saving enough, to send money back to Kent to pay for his wife-to-be voyage. Kate sailed on a second-class ticket for E-Deck, number 27849, which cost £13.

At 11.40pm on the 14th April she heard a crash and went on deck. Meeting a friend, she returned to her cabin and put more clothes on, then returned on deck. Along with a female friend they were escorted to lifeboat Number 9. Kate later wrote to a friend, Elsie Sparkes in Halling, Kent: “ I’d just my nightdress, my dressing gown and a long coat. It was terribly cold by the iceberg.”

“ I’ve lost everything to remind me of home, all my photographs, my letters, everything except my rings and watch.”

Lifeboat Number 9 was lowered at 1.30am and it was picked up by the Carpathia at 6.15am. The ship picked up 712 people from 13 lifeboats. The rescue ship arrived at Pier 54 in New York at 9.25pm on the 18th April.

Staying in the east side of New York at the home of; Reverend William Dalziel 1855-1935 and his wife, Emma 1856-1921, formally of Greenstreet near Faversham. Kate wrote to her mother in Sittingbourne.

“ I do hope you don’t believe most of the newspaper stories. I am well and want you to know this. I have been preserved from reporters, who have been trying to find me.”

She later left New York and started the journey to San Diego, where she was reunited with Samuel Willis. Kate wrote several letters to friends in Halling, near Rochester. “ They had to haul me up the last few steps of the rescue ladder and then someone wrapped me in a rug. I had hot brandy and water in the saloon.”

The memory of the terrifying climb, she said would stay with her for the rest of her life.

Kate married Samuel Willis as planned on Saturday, 11th May 1912.

Kate Willis never spoke in public about the tragedy but did so in private, when she became emotional. She successfully avoided the press and didn’t testify to either, to the American or the British boards of inquiry.

In one of the few public statements she made, Kate said: “ I willingly would have waited, if I had known how few lifeboats there were.”

On the 12th July 1972, Kate Buss Willis died in Independence, Oregon. On her gravestone her daughter added a,  “ Titanic survivor.”

Tasting Notes

Plan? Who needs a plan? Although, I did want to follow up a Dolly Parton track with a Pet Shop Boys track, and I succeeded in that. So, hooray for planning, I guess? A Dolly Parton disco remix. Who knew.

I’m late, and the first 20 minutes of the set are pure chaos. My opening song has a skip in it. I have to quickly switch to another track. Sylvester. What a jam. “YOU MAKE ME FEEL, MMMM MIGHTY REAL.” Makes me realize what a huge influence the gay club scene has on my aesthetic, but I’m too much of a dilettante to ever stay in one groove long. I love the totality of the musical experience, and I try to fit things together in a pleasing way. And tonight I did some of my best work. Will dialed in the sound system this week and provided booth monitors, which made a huge difference, since I have a kind of hybrid mixing technique. I like to listen to the house to make sure the transitions are working the way I want them to. I’m still learning, even after decades of doing this.

There is no one in the bar. It’s weird. Then, there are a lot of people in the bar. Saturday night in downtown Boise! The continual crawl. People come, people go. I hope they tip well.

The crew is different from last month. Except for Beth. The door person Abby introduces themself, but I never meet the second bartender, Emma. They all work hard, and take care of the crowd. Abby even works some crochet into their night! It rules.

Apparently there have been complaints from upstairs at the speakeasy about our volume, which is part of the reason Will put in so much work on the PA. No complaints this time around. I work hard to make sure I keep the music present, enveloping without being overwhelming. There is fellowship and hooking up happening, and I want to complement it, not ruin it.

No one I know is there, and no one is making any requests. A dude comes up to the booth and says, “I’ve got Cokane running around in my brain” and gives me a fist bump. “Man, I never expected to hear that around here!” I was gratified, because I often wonder what goes through people’s minds as they listen to my set. I must say, I was chuffed.

DJ Retronaut and his traveling party, which included Mrs. DJ I.G.A., roll into the bar. I am happy to see them. They are family. They also understand the life, and realize I’m at a job, and allow me to do it. I love them for that. Happy Birthday, Henry Dryden. Big Red is 21!

They stay awhile, but I don’t get to play “Headhunters” by Herbie Hancock for Retronaut. That would just be showing off anyway.

I played many of the 12” records that I acquired since the last time I played. They are thick and cheap on the resale market right now. Germboy Newcox scouted out a killer single for me, “Something For Nothing,” and I played the A-side next to the Time, and it fit so well. I had not heard of this record before, a 1984 slice of Electro Funk mastered by Brian “Big Bass” Gardner at Bernie Grundmans. So I obviously have much left to discover! The search goes on.

I started late, so I tacked on another couple of minutes with “Sugar Shack” by Jimmy Gilmer and the Fireballs. This amuses Beth behind the bar, which was a nice note to end on.
