New story in Politics from Time: Melania Trump Walks Through Ghana’s ‘Door of No Return’ During ‘Impactful’ Africa Trip
(CAPE COAST, Ghana) — Melania Trump walked out the infamous “Door of No Return” at a onetime slave-trade outpost Wednesday and gazed over the crashing ocean waves that carried millions of Africans to lives of servitude. She later called her visit “a solemn reminder of a time in our history that should never be forgotten.”
“It’s very emotional,” she said.
“The dungeons that I saw, it’s really something that people should see and experience,” she told reporters.
The setting was Cape Coast Castle, a 17th century structure overlooking the Atlantic on the coast of the West African nation of Ghana.
Swedes built the castle for use in the trade of timber and gold. But along the way it became a warehouse for Africans as they were rounded up and shipped to the New World and into lives of servitude.
The castle is a familiar stop for U.S. dignitaries visiting Ghana. Then-President Barack Obama brought his family in July 2009. U.S. lawmakers have come, too.
Adding her name to the list Wednesday was the wife of President Donald Trump, who isn’t unanimously seen as a friend of Africa.
Mrs. Trump arrived at the castle after a two-and-a-half hour drive over bumpy roads from the capital, Accra. The first lady spent a few minutes meeting privately with her guide, Kwesi Essel-Blankson, and getting an introductory history of the castle before they emerged into an open area in 80-degree heat and humidity.
The two stood on an upper level before descending a staircase to walk along a stone path as waves crashed below. Essel-Blankson showed the first lady an old cannonball and then escorted her to the “male slave dungeon.” They spent about 10 minutes inside the mostly dark, cramped holding area before the first lady walked down a pathway that led to the Door of No Return.
It was through this door — and others like it all along the coast of West Africa — that Africans were loaded onto vessels that then took them across the Atlantic with little hope of ever returning to their homeland.
Afterward, the first lady tweeted: “Day two in #Ghana was so impactful. My visit to Cape Coast castle was a solemn reminder of a time in our history that should never be forgotten.”
Day two in #Ghana was so impactful. My visit to Cape Coast castle was a solemn reminder of a time in our history that should never be forgotten. Thank you to Chief Osabarima Kwesi Atta & the chieftains for the warm welcome & cultural ceremony. #FLOTUSinAfrica2018 pic.twitter.com/pdf9yrmQL8
— Melania Trump (@FLOTUS) October 3, 2018
Before leaving the compound, the first lady laid a wreath, observed a moment of silence and signed a guest book, writing: “Thank you for your warm welcome.” She called the castle “a special place.”
The first lady’s visit was a lower-key affair than Obama’s visit as the first black U.S. president, and reminders of his visit with wife Michelle were prominent.
A marble plaque unveiled by Obama and his wife during their visit hung near the entrance to one of the dungeons.
Before the visit, Mrs. Trump visited nearby Emintsimadze Palace to participate in a traditional ceremony where a regional tribe leader granted her permission to tour the palace. Obama had also been to the palace and his presence was documented there, too.
The ceremony was held inside Obama Hall, a building on the palace grounds that was renamed after the former president’s 2009 visit. A large photo of Obama greeting the chiefs hangs in the lobby.
Mrs. Trump entered the hall following a procession of girls blowing horns. She was escorted to a high-backed chair alongside Osabarimba Kwesi Atta II, chieftain of the Fante tribe, before an audience of fellow tribe members, U.S. Embassy staff and journalists.
Thank you #Ghana! The arrival ceremony, visit to Ridge Hospital, tea at the Jubilee House & meeting the hard workers at the U.S. Embassy made for an amazing first day. Thank you to @RAkufoAddo & the people of #Ghana for such a memorable visit. pic.twitter.com/BCSqgCyGOM
— Melania Trump (@FLOTUS) October 3, 2018
He called her “Your Excellency,” and said: “We welcome you to Cape Coast and hope your short stay will be a memorable one.”
Mrs. Trump replied that she was very honored” to be there, accepting a gift of Kente cloth and slippers as a remembrance of the trip.
Mrs. Trump, who was born in Slovenia, is on her first visit to Africa, with a goal of highlighting child welfare on the continent. Her five-day, four-nation tour will also include stops in Malawi, Kenya and Egypt.

U.S. first lady Melania Trump lays wreath at ’emotional’ slave castle in Ghana
CAPE COAST, Ghana (Reuters) – U.S. First lady Melania Trump on Wednesday laid a wreath at a slave fortress on the coast of Ghana, vowing never to forget the place where Africans were held before being shipped away into further hardship, most across the Atlantic.

“It’s very emotional… I will never forget (the) incredible experience and the stories that I heard,” she said after seeing the dungeons and walking through the ‘door of no return’, the castle’s final exit towards the ocean.
She arrived in Ghana on the first stop of her first solo international trip as first lady, a tour of Africa, a continent her husband has been reported to have referred to derisively. She will also visit Malawi, Kenya and Egypt.
President Donald Trump has not visited Africa since taking office in 2017. In January U.S. media reported widely that he described African states as “shithole countries” during a discussion with lawmakers about immigration. He has denied making the remark.
The 17th century Cape Coast castle, now a monument, has attracted world dignitaries including America’s first black President Barack Obama and his family, who also shared their emotions at the site.
During her tour on Wednesday, Melania Trump walked slowly with a guide through various wings, asking questions. She passed a row of cannons and descended into a dungeon where male slaves were held in chains.
“It’s really, really touching,” she said. “The dungeons that I saw, it’s really something that people should see and experience, and what happened so many years ago — it’s really a tragedy.”
Before proceeding to the slave castle, she visited the palace of the head chief of the area and obtained royal approval to visit the fortress after presenting drinks to the chiefs.
The ceremony took place in Obama hall at the Emintsimadze Palace, a hall that was renamed in Obama’s honour after his visit to the area in 2009.

Three Key points from the visit of Vice President Kamala Harris to Emintsimadze Palace

Three Key points from the visit of Vice President Kamala Harris to Emintsimadze Palace
The Vice President of the United States of America, Kamala Harris yesterday paid a courtesy call on Oguaahen when she visited Emintsimadze Palace as part of her visit to Cape Coast. She joins the list of the uncountable high profile dignitaries and celebrities who have visited Cape Coast and the 19th Century palace (Emintsimadze Palace was built in 1825).
There was an hour conversation between her team and that of Emintsimadze Palace. The Central Regional President of the House of Chiefs was present. The Central Regional minister, Vice Chancellor’s of both UCC and CCTU were present. Central Region Chamber of Commerce, Business men, heads of all Secondary schools, heads of Churches, head of all security agencies in the region, CCTH, Nursing colleges etc were all present.
There was a lengthy conversation between institutions in Cape Coast/Central Region and the delegation lead by the vice president to Cape Coast. However, there were three major issues that stood out;
1. Oguaa Traditional Council in collaboration with Smithsonian Museum of African American History have agreed to set up a Ghanaian Museum for Slavery and African History in Cape Coast. This will be located at the site of the abandoned old post office building and the deteriorating high court building. The multi million dollar project will have a museum, hotel and a shopping centre for African arts exhibited around the Castle.
2. The USA ambassador to Ghana has been appointed as a liaison between the White House and Emintsimadze Palace to further deepen the relationship between Ghana and Cape Coast and USA
3. More collaborations and visitations between USA universities and academic institutions in Cape Coast.
The people of Cape Coast are really excited especially by the first point as it has been something everyone who lives in or comes from Cape Coast and the region has always wished. The old post office building is in bad shape and we hope the place is put into good use. We heard about this project about 5years ago but there have no been any progress. Hopefully, the visit by the Vice President will help speed up the process.

It was to recognize the role the company has played in contributing to the preservation of the Ghanaian tradition and also its diverse contrition towards the activities of the Oguaa Traditional Council. Having one of its distribution points in Cape Coast, the company has employed several youth thereby reducing the unemployment situation in Cape Coast and its environs.
Madam Genevieve Oblikai Commey, General Manager and Madam Yvonne Mensah, Marketing Manager of GIHOC Distilleries received the award on behalf of the company. Speaking during the event, Osabarimba Kwesi Atta II appealed to investors to exploit the potential of Cape Coast and invest.
According to him, Cape Coast can boost many potentials which have still not been exploited “Hence bringing your investment as done by other individuals and organizations can help protect and promote Cape Coast to the rest of the world and I encourage others to emulate your good example and they would never regret they did”, Osabarima stated.
He reiterated that looking at tourism and other comparable potentials in Cape Coast places the ancient city top among its peers. Nana Omanhen however noted that the Emintsimadze Palace is open to all investors and individuals who wish to invest in Cape Coast.
