It’s curious that it’s usually children we reckon have trouble telling the difference, since the people who get worked up over works of fiction are almost invariably well over the age of majority.

A better argument would have been that this revelation could reflect badly upon King Edward Primary School, and upon Webb as a teacher. This sort of thing has always been applied very arbitrarily. For instance, when Henry Kissinger, the man behind the overthrow of the democratically elected government of Chile, gives a speech at a university it’s usually seen as a badge of honour. In its way, this is even more insidious than state censorship. The justice system, at least, is open to the idea that people can change. The administration at King Edward Primary School appear to believe, against the evidence of their own eyes, that Webb could not – that his time as Devvo should hang around his neck forever, as a mark of Cain.

Many have condemned this kind of non-state censorship, although the focus in that regard is usually on social media sites like Facebook and Twitter, neither of which have been at all shy about trying to stamp out stuff they disapprove of. With bodies both public and private trying to effectively regulate our personal lives, it begs the question: where does it end? In an increasingly politicised world, will we see banks freezing the accounts of anyone whose opinions they dislike? Will trains and buses refuse to stop for anyone who whips up too dank a meme? Laugh if you like, there’s probably a long list of these being circulated in the halls of power in Beijing.

Most great art has the potential to offend. The last thing we need is the artists behind it hesitating to create or publish it, with the fear of it coming back to ruin their life years later in the back of their mind. A lot of organizations focus on efficiency over effectiveness rather than being effectively efficient. It doesn't matter how efficient you are if you are not effective.

Often when we decide what's efficient, we do so on too short of a timeline. What's efficient in the short term is often increasingly fragile.

The costs of efficiency are everywhere -- just look at buying a car today. The 'just in time' inventory system of the manufacturers had only a few days of key parts in it. Of course, this is what every business school teaches. When supply chains got disrupted, factories were temporarily shuttered. All because a bigger buffer of these parts would show up on the balance sheet and look, at least temporarily, 'inefficient.'

The world is less predictable than we think. Random events happen with unpredictable results. The way to weather these is to have margins of safety, shock absorbers, and slack — in other words, inefficiency.

Inevitably, people will consider the latest disruption a fluke and no one will learn the lesson: When you remove the shock absorbers, you get the shocks. Don't win the moment at the expense of the decade.)

When you catch yourself saying “that doesn’t make any sense,” “that shouldn’t happen,” “I didn’t expect that,” you’re surprised. That’s your cue to pay attention.

Surprises are a clue that you’re missing something. Dive and figure out what.

So, as many of you may have heard, Dark Horse will be publishing a 'Stranger Things' comic in September. It's a smart move and as long as the book is in keeping with the aesthetic and quality of the Netflix show, then it ought to be the evergreen cashcow Dark Horse have been desperately searching for since losing the Star Wars license to Marvel a few years back.

Ought to be.

There's a documented history of the comics industry managing to drop the ball with franchises that are proven money in other media, though. Sometimes it's the fault of the publishers being lazy and arrogant with the properties they're handling. Assuming that the books will sell purely on the back of the name alone and letting the actual creative work to be done by...Not Ready For Prime Time Players, we said diplomatically. Leading to low-quality comics that tend to leave punters less than satisfied. And with the reasonable impression that if that's how shoddy the big license stuff is, then there's no point coming back to check out the rest.

The state of the comics is part of the problem, although publishers like IDW have certainly done their best to improve the general reputation of films and other media to comics (We'd highly recommend their Mars Attacks, Suicide Girls, Garbage Pail Kids and Fear And Loathing In Las Vegas comics, off the top of our heads.) but there is also more that the shops could be doing to push the books. There's an unfortunate tendency for some comics retailers to order these sort of books as if they were just rank and file Wednesday stock that will hopefully last until Saturday and sell out with a few copies put aside for eBay if it's a hot book.

So, something like 'The Prisoner' is filed between 'Pitt' and 'Punisher', probably only visible by a third of the actual cover on the shelf. It fails to sell because no one can see it, it's regarded by both stores and publishers as a failure and customers don't hear about it until maybe issue 3 is out by which time the shop is down to ordering for standing orders. By which time it's too late for anything except buying 2nd hand off eBay, doing nothing for the sales figures of said comic.

Which brings us to a concept we were taught while in the gainful employ of West End Shop Legend, Comics Showcase. The notion of the evergreen comic.

The middle table of Showcase, older readers may remember, was filled with work off the mainstream of the industry but placed close enough to the counter that casual browsers could see titles that might appeal to them. Books like Love And Rockets, Cerebus. Jay And Silent Bob, R. Crumb, Eightball, The Bradleys/Hate, From Hell (the book AND the single issues, which tells you how long ago that was.) Naughty Bits, Bacchus. A whole bunch of comics that may not have found their audience in the first week of release but were believed in enough both in terms of quality and long-term selling power to be worth investing in.

It wasn't unusual to see someone go from randomly picking up a copy of Cerebus 0 for a couple of quid to getting a copy of the first collection a week later, and then carrying on with the subsequent volumes in rapid succession. As a new comic, Cerebus didn't sell very well. As a series of 15 odd trades with only the taste of the stories in that teaser book to hook them in, it did very well. The same was true for Hate, From Hell, Love And Rockets, Naughty Bits, etc.

If those comics were put out the way licensed comics are today, they'd have died on the vine, probably not even publishing enough issues to actually warrant that first trade.

So, when we were handed the reigns of Raygun East, we employed much the same trick and we even had it much, much easier than the Showcase days. By this time, both Image and Marvel had started doing their $1 teaser books. Using some of our more, er, interesting resources, we loaded up the shelf next to the counter with cheap copies of Sex Criminals*, Marvel Zombies, Criminal, Hip Hop Family Tree, Archie, the Goon. We talked up the books using our patented two sentence synopsis technique. People bought the samples. Then they came back for the Volume 1, Volume 2, etc.

We were especially proud of shifting a Boom Tube's worth of Occupy Comics, figuring it a comic that was well worthy of people's attention but just hadn't yet found it's audience since most places didn't feature it face out, thus obscuring the globally recognised 'OCCUPY' logo, which had penetrated much more of the public's psyche than 'The Outsiders' or whatever.

Some publishers recognise the value of keeping their titles in print, and some shops are smart enough to see that you can't just chuck everything on the same shelf and hope.

And with a double album length intro under our belts, we have an insight to what went wrong with the Marvel Music line.

Marvel, like all comic publishers of note, had tried their hand at music-related comics before. It's common and a bit lazy to write off all those attempts as awful by citing the K.I.S.S and Alice Cooper books as a fair representation of the entire effort, but really, how much can you do with KISS in the first place? We're quite fond of the George Perez pencilled Beatles comic (Marvel Comics Super Special 4, in case you were wondering.) and tie-in to Rock Musical Movie 'Rock And Rule', which featured Iggy and Jagger on the soundtrack and what appears to be animation cels as artwork that look beautiful. As well as all this, there are pictures of Debbie Harry, which would improve any comic ever published.

There's also 1991's Nightcat which is a piece all by itself and depends on us finding a copy of the eponymous record one day. We have a copy of the comic already. Filed next to our copy of Stripperella.

As 1994 rolled around and Marvel were in a state of flux, slinging almost anything at a wall and hoping it would stick. Which can be the only reason why then Marvel President Terry Stewart would look at an outfit like Revolutionary (who specialized in cheap hack biographies of pop music and were constantly being sued for unauthorized usage of band logos.) and say 'That. Let's try that.' To be fair, Stewart also became President Of The Rock N Roll Hall Of Fame.

Obviously, the two major differences Marvel made to the process were paying for some decent artists to write and draw the actual books and working with the musicians involved so a more mutually agreeable idea would be published. On paper, the proposed line up isn't bad at all, from a merch point of view.

Even in 2018, any Camden T-shirt stand is going to do alright with The Rolling Stones, Woodstock, Cheap Trick, Alice Cooper, Bob Marley, with Onyx, KRS One and a rumoured White Zombie on your roster. Much as we might be hard pushed to think of him as anything other than 'Miley's Dad.', Billy Ray Cyrus sold over 20 million copies of 'Some Gave It All' (which spawned the single 'Achy Breaky Heart.). Imagine if a tenth of that fanbase bought copies of his comic at shows or signings. (That's copies sold from publisher to customer. Not publisher to retailer.) and Image Comics would have been sick to the stomach.

So. 1994. Comics aren't selling in stupid amounts anymore because the speculators have realized it's a bad investment but the numbers aren't awful. Marvel Music isn't being tarnished with the same brush as the rest of their output as it's recognized to be a separate imprint and nobody knows about Marvel Mart yet (More on THAT another time.) There's a respectable set up for these books which feature the work of top-end talent like Kyle Baker, Neil Gaiman, Michael Zulli, Dan Barry and Dave McKean. While the Billy Ray Cyrus comic is at best ludicrous, but no worse than the later Eminem/Punisher, both 'Voodoo Lounge' and 'The Last Temptation' are timed to be released in conjunction with their counterpart albums. There's no way this could fail, right?

Well....

First off, Todd did not have the support of Marvel staff when pushing this project. Music tie-ins had been given such a sleazy reputation thanks to the actions of Revolutionary (who would go onto to become Bluewater and if you fancy a laugh, look up their biographies and you'll see the artistic standards we're talking about here.) that few in-house wanted the work enough to potentially run foul of Suge Knight and given Todd Loren (Head of Revolutionary) had been stabbed to death in a still unresolved murder a couple of years previously, it was probably considered not worth the page rate.

Marvel had to cede creative control to the musicians, not something they were used to doing and certainly not for the amount of money at stake here. 'The Last Temptation Of Alice' reads like a fill-in issue of Sandman. 'Break The Chain' is a visual accompaniment to the song bundled with the comic. The Onyx, Woodstock and Billy Ray Cyrus comics are...what they are. In most instances, it appeared to be a case of handing over lots of money for licensing, creator payment, 'other' and hoping what came back was publishable at best.

Although that alone shouldn't have been a factor. At the risk of continuing to abuse KISS fans, they are the apex of the concept that you can flog a devotee any old rubbish as long as it has the correct logo on it. Within 30 seconds of looking up proof of our theory, we were confronted with the existence of a KISS Waffle Maker. It's a waffle maker with Gene Simmons's Demon face on it. It costs $40. We are not making this up. If people were willing to buy that, then even the worst comic ever published would sell to a potential audience if it featured Green Day, Nine Inch Nails, Aerosmith and The Red Hot Chilli Peppers, right?

Pre-orders on the Marvel Music books were low. Relative to the hype, license fees and other expenses (At one point Mort Todd flew to Jamiaca to conduct research on the Bob Marley title.) the comics were making no money, with the highest ordered being Neil Gaiman's Alice Cooper book. To be honest, that was probably on the back of Neil's heat circa 1994 rather than anything to do with Cooper.

The whole imprint was hard to find within it's native home of comic shops who treated them like any other Marvel comics shipped that week, rather than thinking long-term that while Electric Blue Smurf Supermen and Purple Hoodie Spideys will come and go, there'll always be a Stones fan who has to have everything and will give you money if they see a rare item next to the till. Anyone who'd buy 'She's The Boss' on purpose deserves to be segregated from their money anyway.

'Onyx: Fight' would be Marvel Music's final output before the line was quietly cancelled in 1995. With the exception of the Gaiman/Cooper book, which was reprinted as a single volume by Dark Horse in 2005, the whole line remains out of print and are an utter nightmare to find due to the exceptionally low print runs.

We're experienced hunters of rare and ludicrious tat and in our twenty years have only seen 1 copy of Rolling Stones: Voodoo Lounge and 2 of 'KRS-ONE:Break The Chain', which we would happily call the very peak of the line. The saddest part of all this was that Dave Bowie was blown away by the Gaiman/Cooper thing and was looking to do a similar work for his upcoming '1.Outside ' album.

The LEGO movie shows no sign of racism and it’s a kids movie but adults have learned to categorize each other in groups for some reason. Art doesn’t mean what it represents sometimes, like Billie Eilish’s music is completely false.. it’s just there to mock or point at reality. What is dumb is that the movie is translated to multiple languages but people would still be able to guess emett is American bc of Starbucks.. nobody spoke in the movie about their debts or the costs being used to give live meaning to the construction workers.. or made god not Morgan freedom.. like out of some magic box the idea that Morgan freeman is god is only bc of Pangea and them thinking yeah makes sense if monkeys were before man.. but how do they know monkeys were black... then it’s what they think.. because of geography.. what’s the reason for Africans being black... it’s the unpurification of water.. or lack of it.. I think that it’s strange that if one software update contained a translator switch on control center then suddenly the world would be able to discriminate each other not in just their language but in all languages that dialect or where people are from would be... pointless. Like a curtain being lifted, racism would be gone within one year and employers would finally be able to hire by skill and not practice bigotry or selection of elimination of races. There’s also individualism that is kinda difficult to talk about because when you think of aliens you don’t think of black or white.. so individualism shouldn’t be about that either. I doubt any of this matters though Morgan freeman as a white man doesn’t make sense.. and Eminem as a black man doesn’t either.. and Eminem’s mom sued him for money after he got rich and micheal Jackson turned himself white just to further his point that the racism by Europeans is still something America had held but now America colonized everything on earth. America won by driving itself crazy and the Europeans just sat there thinking their tea party would never end. This is the revolution that was coming and the revolution that changed the landscape because Jony Ive and Deiter Rams knew design speaks in volumes but didn’t understand it also destroyed others for it. And that’s a bit of where people don’t like to be.. to pretend they aren’t consumers even though they go to stores.. but then also want to be treated with the respect of the queen... but totally forgot the royal queen drinks blood. so I guess my point is there is an in between... that is the American way and what I’ve learned from years of being a badass in video games is that you don’t have to be American to be American.. you just have to know how to play left for dead and pretend there’s a math problem before being able to reload your gun and pretend the solutions aren’t killing your european neighbors when you shoot the zombies even though they already kill themselves.. we can thank the Europeans, Freemasons and Robert Morris instead of letting John Locke do his shit for our failures in life, but under the eye of the Illuminati and knowing the Illuminati was also created in France and have secret tunnels with skulls in them called the catacombs but are kinda boring and really unnecessary the same way the stone henge really was just a sacrificial moon clock that believed they had to worship time cycles and continue practicing their crafts... if technology existed in all time periods I’m pretty sure racism, religion, individualism, or job discrimination would not and cults would have no meaning as would if somebody created multi addressable bitcoin block chain wallet apps then we would live on a morality currency, doctors who saved lives would have to be paid in the total net worth of the persons/ their yearly salary and paid by the taxes exactly taken away from his paycheck instead of just an insurance price off a list decided by some clown in DC... some things don’t make sense still and neither does this. 😴

Recovery is a bitch.

When I first crash-landed on the coast at the beginning of December, wearing my Shambhala tights and violently monologuing to whoever would listen, I couldn’t imagine a future that didn’t involve rage — and it was exhausting me, making me feel disgusting and anti-social. 

Really, deep down, I was sad.

One smart move I made on my way out of the Kootenays was to leave my computer and my phone behind with my roommate. I’d been receiving death threats on my phone, while my computer had three years’ worth of memories waiting to drag me back into the blackness. I was better off going tech-free. I took all my creative energy and funnelled it into painting. 

My parents accompanied me to Vancouver General Hospital the first day I got back, and sat in while doctors told me what I needed: to cut out citalopram, my antidepressant of four years, as well as cannabis. To replace them I was given new drugs, lorazepam and zopiclone among them, and I was told to take it as easy as possible. I was scared of withdrawal, but the new regimen worked nicely. 

I did a lot of sleeping, and had a good Christmas.

Then came the New Year. By that point I’d levelled out for nearly a month, and I was starting to take social calls. But my head was still in the Kootenays, and I found myself processing my feelings with my series “Anatomy of a Mental Breakdown” — some of the rawest shit I’ve ever written, and cathartic too. But as my psychologist pointed out, I was purposefully throwing “petrol on the fire”.

Then Mike Spry wrote his piece “No Names, Only Monsters” , hosting it on a website called CanLit Accountable. He was busting his own glass house so he could throw some stones. Suddenly my feminist classmates, who had been engaged in a multi-year battle with UBC about the Steven Galloway situation, had a new reason to throw truth-grenades on Twitter. While I sat at home, bored, my friends were engaged in social media warfare.

So of course I joined in.

Looking back now, I’m embarrassed by how clumsy and ridiculous I must’ve appeared to everyone else online. While thoughtful women like Chelsea Rooney and Alicia Elliot put forward nuanced arguments, I was making everyone uncomfortable by tweeting outrageous shit at Galloway, using YouTube clips from The Wire and The Sopranos.

“Sorry I’m late,” I wrote to Chelsea. 

For me, the situation came down to tribal loyalties. And the fact was I’d spent years feeling guilty for not speaking up, for not backing up my friend Sierra Gemma. I’d been paralyzed by fear of saying the wrong thing, or messing up my employment opportunities, but suddenly I was free to say whatever the fuck I wanted. I felt like I’d unleashed a feral version of myself, like I’d transitioned from being Will Johnson into a snarling attack dog otherwise known as the Kootenay Goon.

By this point, I wasn’t sleeping again. When I started disturbing my siblings, I decided that the best course of action was to chain-smoke while driving all over the Lower Mainland in the early hours of the morning — from Surrey to Vancouver to Richmond and back. I was spending a lot of time crying, sorting through my Nelson memories, and worrying about what was going to happen next in my life.

“You need to stop looking into the past, and start looking into the future,” my Dad said. “Nelson is just making you angry.”

Along with my brother Cody, he brought me back to Nelson to pack up my stuff in mid-January. I still wasn’t sleeping properly, so around 4 a.m. I woke up Cody and drove around, ultimately leaving five of my paintings for friends I cared about — at the Hume, Vienna Cafe, Windsor Barber, Finley’s and Power By You. We went out to the bridge where bank robber Andrew Stevenson was arrested after jumping over the side.

Then, later that morning, I saw a tweet from Jacob Mooney where he noted that UVic teacher Lee Henderson (a good friend of Galloway) had taken his name off the UBC Accountable letter. It was a huge moment, being applauded all over Twitter, and in celebration I drove across town to see my friend Syd. I took a photo I posted with a provocative caption calling out a local asshole, and though I told my Dad not to answer his phone within half an hour we’d gotten frantic calls.

“Let’s just get the fuck out of here,” I told him.

Once I was safely back in Tsawwassen, I returned to Twitter to check if anything else had happened. Apparently the teachers Mike Spry called out at Concordia were no longer teaching their classes, and there was a sense that shit was happening right here, right now. With new access to my photo archives, I shared pictures from SD8 and noted that former Superintendent Jeff Jones was the first person to ask me about Galloway — which is true.

One night, buoyed by everything happening online, I drove out to UBC at 3:30 a.m. to hold my own “peaceful protest”. Different women had chastised me for “taking up too much space” in the dialogue on Twitter, so I decided to leave my RAV parked diagonally in front of the UBC sign and walk off with the music blaring. Somewhere deep down I understood that nobody was going to come, but in my mind I pictured my friends hosting a raging protest around my car.

Instead, they put me in the psych ward.

When I was doing the intake, the doctor was a muscular black man who resembled Dr. Dre. I told him I’d been watching “I Need a Doctor” by Dr. Dre repeatedly, along with a bunch of Eminem tracks, and I felt like I’d been screaming that sentiment for weeks: I need a doctor! Now, finally, I was getting some help!

As it turns out, the psych ward was a blast. I met a bunch of amazing people, had daily meetings with psychiatrists who were introducing me to new meds, and my journalist brain was carefully recording everything that happened around me. If nothing else, this was a good story. When I walked out 7 days later, shaking hands with Dr. Hutnyk, I thought for sure I now had the resources and support to scamper off into the world.

For a while, I was right. The following month was low-key and productive, as I found a new mental health team and started taking lithium. At times it was frustrating, like when my Dad and I drove out to Surrey to have a 20 minute conversation that could’ve easily been done over the phone, but I had the sense that people were mobilizing on my behalf and things were about to level out. No more drama!

But I hadn’t finished processing what had happened in Nelson, and I was still furious every day. I’d spent a lot of time contemplating anger, and the unhealthy ways I’d expressed it online up to that point. It was clear that controversial shit didn’t belong on Facebook, so I started funnelling my content more carefully through Twitter and Tumblr while I built my new friend base. I’d started a new Facebook to ensure that my friends were actually my friends. 

Then I wrote a post, on a Monday morning, that would cost me more than I’d anticipated. Because of the way I’d worded it, the person I was angrily addressing misread my sentiments. I was threatening to release information — which I ultimately did — but he took it as a death threat and reported me to police. At first it seemed so funny I couldn’t believe it, but a few days later I was in the segregation wing of the Surrey jail, wondering how the system could fail so profoundly.

While I was inside, I met with a psychologist named Dr. Worth twice. The first time I was wrapped in a Velcro smock, the second time in the red sweat-suits worn by all the other inmates. We discussed my actions at length, and talked about what I would do next. I told him I was planning to turn my experiences into blog posts at the very least, but maybe even a book.

“You’re definitely going to have a rich experience here,” he said. 

Four days later I was back in Tsawwassen, dealing with the bullshit around finding myself a lawyer, but I actually felt better than I had in months — I’d successfully thrown a truth-grenade that had a legitimate impact. I was told my boss didn’t leave his house for three days, and I was thrilled that I’d successfully fucked up his world. I’d gone from feeling powerless to powerful — I’d successfully established my moral dominance over him, and called him out for legit wrong-doing.

But again, my head was still in Nelson. And it would have to be for a while, because I had to ride-share back there for a court appearance a few weeks later. Luckily this visit, in March, went better than the one before. I was doggy-piled by love and moral support, saw a bunch of my favourite people in the world, and left town again feeling like a conquering hero.

That being said, I was still bored and jobless. There was the legitimate fear that these court proceedings could result in me having a criminal record — again, something so ludicrous I can only call it funny. I was vindicated by the fact that the local school district hadn’t considered me a threat, probably because they knew me better than my absentee boss, and I happily tweeted with them as soon as I was free. 

Now here we are: I’ve got three weeks ahead of me in the “low-stimulus environment” of Tsawwassen my psychiatrist recommended, and I’m trying to lose some of the weight I’ve gained while living at my parents’ house by joining a Master’s swim team and jogging up to Fred Gingell Park. I’ve signed up for whitewater rafting school and the biggest thing I have to battle in the meantime is boredom. 

Does that mean I’m recovered? No, probably not. But I’ve got faith that I’m getting there.

Starbucks will be closing its stores and corporate offices on May 29 for company-wide racial bias training. The announcement comes in response to public protests and calls to boycott the coffee chain after the arrest of two black men at a Philadelphia store last week. The store manager called 911 when the men refused to leave after trying to use the store's restroom without making a purchase. Starbucks in L.A. accused of racism after bathroom incident caught on video "CBS This Morning" co-host Gayle King sat down with Starbucks' executive chairman Howard Schultz to discuss how the company is handling the incident. "I'm embarrassed, ashamed. I think what occurred was reprehensible at every single level. I think I take it very personally as everyone in our company does and we're committed to making it right. The announcement we made yesterday about closing our stores, 8,000 stores closed, to do significant training with our people is just the beginning of what we will do to transform the way we do business and educate our people on unconscious bias," Schultz said. "It will cost millions of dollars, but I've always viewed this and things like this as not an expense, but an investment in our people and our company. And we're better than this," he said of the company's plan to close on May 29. According to Schultz, the Philadelphia store manager who called the police has left the company.
