Let's also not forget that the one time we know of that one of Snake's snakes killed someone, it wasn't the intended target. Sebastian and our earl didn't seem to mind, as young Mr. Phelps was with Blue Star Line. His death might have also been beneficial to Lau.

But what if, during some conflict at the orphanage, one of his snakes strikes and ends up biting the wrong person? What if Emily turns against the others?

And what would happen to Doll, if a poisonous snake bit her?

What Will Snake Do?

I think one of the big questions weighing on people's minds is what will Snake do? Will Snake side with Doll and turn on Finny, or will something happen that will cause Snake to stand by Finny?

On one hand, there are those parallels I've written about previously between Finny and Snake. It stands to reason that when push comes to shove, Snake will try to protect his 'family' similar to how Finny protected o!Ciel.

But there's another factor to consider with Snake that may affect his reaction. Namely, his snakes.

When Snake started to tell Doll all that has happened, Wordsworth stopped him.

This even led to a discussion among the snakes, and only Emily seemed to trust Doll. The rest seemed to put the mission first.

So if (most likely when) the time comes to choose sides, the snakes are likely to remind Snake that Finny has been his friend and be the ones to note there is something 'off' about Doll.

In fact, I think Snake might be too blinded for his love for Doll to see that this is not entirely the person he once knew.

But the same might not be true of the snakes.

Plus, Snake attacks with his reptilian friends. If he tells the snakes to bite Finny, they might refuse.

If Snake does side with Finny, I think it will be his snakes that will convince him that this is the right path.

[The sounds of a storm in the background.] Beverly (Caldwell): What have you learned? Murph: He sits back down at his desk. Um, and you see he pulls out an old tome, and he begins flipping through it. And he goes-- Erdan (Murph): Okay, so. Apparently, there are multiple components to the Wraith's plague. It's not just a disease. It's something-- it's something more subtle than that. When you and I talked about it you described seeing the Wraith bounce from corpse to corpse when you first fought it. Beverly: Corpse stride, yes. Erdan: Right. [Emily laughs.] Well, what if the creature didn't have to be dead for the Wraith to be able to possess it? What if it merely had to be… asleep, or incapacitated? Beverly: So you're saying that… anyone that's infected could be possessed by the Wraith? Erdan: I-- I think that's possible. And if that were the case, then someone like you could hand an infected sword to someone like me. I'd be incapacitated by the initial disease, and you could cure me of it. But then, theoretically, the Wraith could still have possessed me while I was out. Not controlling me at first, but lying dormant in my body until an opportune moment-- [Emily: Mmmm.] -- Like when you and your friends left Gladeholm. Do you hear what I'm saying, Beverly? [The Purge begins playing.] Murph: You see Erdan's face begins to sprout bubbling cysts. [Emily gasps] That pop thick, dark green goo. Erdan: Someone like me would have access to the All-Caster. Someone like me would be able to cast a powerful Dominate Person spell on it, and turn the whole city against you. I know you felt guilty about endangering your friends, Beverly, but don't worry. It is they who are endangering you. Caldwell: My sword is already at his throat. Murph: You see three arrows fly through the window from an unseen attacker. [Emily gasps.] Jake: What?! Murph: You see Cran and Derlin-- Caldwell: No! Murph: --wielding rapiers with glazed eyes burst from a closed wardrobe [Emily gasps] and stab into you. We cut to Moonshine. Jake: (quietly) Fuck. Fuck! Murph: Um-- Beverly: (gasps, then yells) Fuck, guys! What the hell, I didn't do anything!

Emily: Okay, well, I gotta be hon-- I gotta be truthful to how I feel. Moonshine (Emily): Pee Paw, I-- I've been wanting to tell you, when you taught me Counterspell? I… I acted like it was really annoying and I didn't wanna learn it, and I just keep regretting that I didn't live in that moment a little more. Murph: Uh, you see he puts his hand on your shoulder, and he goes-- Lucanus (Murph): My daughter, I'm glad that you're embracing this side of yourself. Moonshine: Thank you. Lucanus: You know, your mother and I have been talking about you a lot. Murph: Um, and you see he opens the doors to his quarters, um, and you see Mee Maw is in the center of the room. Moonshine: Mee Maw, this is also so wonderful because I've been wanting to talk to you, because, I've… been getting stronger, and I think I-- you know the druid change, where you suddenly live super long? Mee Maw (Murph): Oh. Moonshine: And I just-- it just feels really complicated. It's just really nice to have my mom and dad around right now. Mee Maw: Well it's so nice to have you around, Moonshine. Moonshine: Yeah. Mee Maw: Tell me, do you know the Shapechange spell yet? Murph: And you see she sticks out her tongue, and it appears forked. [Hisses] Then, the rest of her body turns into a giant snake. Moonshine: Um, actually I did just learn it, Mee Maw. I-- I could probly change into that too, if I wanted. [Laughs nervously] I didn't know you knew-- Lucanus: That won't be necessary. Freeze, right where you are. Murph: You see Lucanus holds his hand up and shoots a 9th level Cone of Cold at you. [Emily laughs in shock.] Murph: We cut over to-- Caldwell: Augh. Murph: Hardwon. Caldwell: Hey man, it's been a while since I said this, but fuck you! [Murph laughs. So does Jake.] Emily: (yelling) Oh my god! I like, literally was like-- I literally was like, "oh, like, I can't wait to see Lucanus and Mee Maw again," and that shit happened with Beverly, but I was like "well, gotta be truthful to exactly what Moonshine would want to have said to them!” Caldwell: Anyway, I'm excited for this Ol' Cobb reunion!

Murph: Hardwon. You follow Cobb back, he's kinda shooting the shit. Um, he takes you to the house that Cobb was sharing with Red and Gunther and Egwene and stuff. And he takes you into the house, and you see that Jaina and Maw Maw are there waiting for you. Jake: Aw, fuck off. [Caldwell laughs.] Jake: I-- I bend the knee to Maw Maw. [Murph laughs.] Maw Maw (Murph): Welcome home, my champion. Hardwon (Jake): My queen. My sister. And my best friend. What could be better? [Murph and Emily laugh.] Murph: Uh, you see Ol' Cobb walks over, and he pulls out a long case, and he goes-- Cobb (Murph): I got somethin' for you here, brother. Hardwon: For me? Cobb! You shouldn't have, uh-- but shit, I got you-- Jake: I pat my pockets. Hardwon: --I also got you a gift. Uh, you go first. Cobb: Alright. I got you… a belly fulla lead. Murph: You see he opens it up, pulls out a blunderbuss, and blasts you in the stomach Caldwell: Fuck. Murph: As Maw Maw goes for your neck and Jaina swings her hammer. Everybody roll initiative. Jake: Okay. Fuck this. [Caldwell laughs.] Emily: Owh…. [A dice rolls.]

Chapter Sixteen: One Hell of a Hire

Summary: The true surprise visitor is revealed, and the Phantomhive Manor attends Sebastian's funeral.

            “Well, now that the Professor has gone, I shall see to luncheon,” said Sebastian, smiling with (Y/N) as if they hadn’t just scared a man out of his wits and threatened him.

            “Wait,” said Ciel. “I kept silent because it seemed like you purposefully didn’t want to bring it up in front of him, but you haven’t yet explained how Phelps’s murder occurred.”

            “Oh, quite right,” said Sebastian.

            “In an interesting turn of events, Lau had the right idea,” said (Y/N). “We had a surprise visitor.”

            “What?!” cried Ciel.

            “Yes. While I was free to roam before arriving as Jeremy, I caught him and showed him special accommodations here,” said Sebastian, crouching and pulling a crate wrapped in chains from under the table.

            “You did? Oh, good. After seeing his little friend, I thought I’d have to track him through the woods,” said (Y/N).

            “The killer is in there?!” Ciel deadpanned.

            “Yes,” said Sebastian.

            “…Let me see what’s inside,” said Ciel.

            “Are you sure?” said Sebastian.

            “Don’t put on airs, open it!” commanded Ciel.

            “Very well,” said Sebastian, breaking the chain and opening the box.

            Two snakes lunged from the crate at Ciel, and (Y/N) caught them. Ciel jerked back in surprise.

            “Well, they certainly still seem to hold some ill will against you,” remarked (Y/NN), holding the snakes.

            From within the crate, a figure could be seen. (Y/N) nodded as their suspicions were confirmed, and Ciel’s eyes widened.

            “Y-You’re Snake!” he exclaimed.

            Snake, the circus performer, stood in plain clothes, bound in rope and gagged. He glared at the group sullenly.

            “Why are you here?!” demanded Ciel as Sebastian removed the gag.

            “The day after Black, Smile, and Cat snuck into the tents of Joker and the other first-stringers, they all went missing! It must have been your doing! -says Wilde,” said Snake. “So I followed the scent of Smile’s costume and went after him. -says Oscar. We found a townhouse, and two helpful men thought we were friends of Smile ‘Ciel’ and brought us here. -says Emily.”

            (Y/N), Sebastian, and Ciel deadpanned. Of course Agni and Soma had gotten it wrong.

            “Those fools!” Ciel gritted his teeth.

            “All the same, there is nothing we can do to rectify that now,” said Sebastian.

            “Soma really is too friendly,” said (Y/N).

            Ciel coughed and faced Snake again. “Uh, so, you’re saying they vanished because of us?”

            “Yes! The minute you three joined our troupe, they all started acting strange! -says Wordsworth. I knew somehow that Joker and the others were hiding something from me.” Snake looked down. “But! They called me their comrade and their friend even though I looked like this. They said we were family. You stole them from me! I’ll never forgive you for that! -says Wilde.”

            Poor thing. He had no idea what they were doing, thought (Y/N).

            Ciel enlightened Snake. “Your circus troupe was kidnapping children one after another from each stop on its tour. We joined up with you to seize any evidence of those crimes.”

            “Joker and the others were kidnappers…?” Snake’s eyes widened. “L-Lies! You’re trying to trick me with your nonsense! -says Oscar.”

            “Nonsense? Perhaps,” said Ciel. “Before I could gather the necessary proof, my identity was discovered, and they disappeared. In that sense, I may had indeed stolen your peace away. But I also wanted to rescue the children who were suffering because of your friends.”

            Sebastian and (Y/N) glanced at Ciel. So that was the story he was going with. Now that was a lie that could blow up in his face if it were discovered.

            “Naturally,” continued Ciel. “I would like to rescue you as well.”

            Snake watched in surprise as Ciel freed him. “What do you think you’re doing?! -says Wilde.”

            “Young Master!” warned Sebastian.

            “Snake,” said Ciel. He extended a hand. “Come to my manor.”

            Sebastian and (Y/N) blinked.

            “What are you saying?! -says Keats,” said Snake.

            “Didn’t you hear me? I said I would like to rescue you,” said Ciel. “Even now, we’re still on the hunt for Joker and company. Of course, I ask for the sake of solving the case, but…don’t you think that staying here would be the shortest route to seeing them again?”

            Lies like these always end up causing trouble. (Y/N) narrowed their eyes slightly.

            “Having lived with them in the circus, I know they’re not evil,” said Ciel. “They were nice to everyone they met and cheerful to boot. That’s why I want them to atone for their sins and obtain true happiness. All of them, including you.”

            “Including me…” Snake’s eyes fell to the ground. He reached out and took Ciel’s hand.

            “I never imagined you would install him in the manor,” said Sebastian as they left the greenhouse, leaving Snake to relax within.

            “It’s better than setting him free and having him make attempt after attempt on my life,” said Ciel. “His ability to manipulate snakes seems like it might come in handy as well. Besides, I’ve been wanting a pet.”

            “You lied to him,” said (Y/N). “Aren’t you concerned about the possible consequences?”

            “If I continue the ‘lie,’ it will eventually become the ‘truth,’ ” said Ciel. “It’s just a matter of swallowing it all up in the end.”

            “…Quite,” said Sebastian.

            (Y/N) wasn’t nearly so convinced.

            “More importantly, how do you explain yourself to the other servants?” said Ciel.

            “Ah, yes, they don’t know I’m alive…” said Sebastian.

            “I have an idea,” said (Y/N). They grinned. “And you’ll have fun, Sebastian.”

            Inside a coffin, Sebastian lay still as Agni, Tanaka, Baldroy, and Finny carried him from the church to the grave. Undertaker stood beside the gravestone, for once somber, and Elizabeth held back tears until they bubbled over. Finny and Mey-Rin were already sobbing, and the tears streamed down their faces as the coffin was lowered into the grave and covered by dirt.

            “Ciel!” She embraced him. “Sebastian is such a liar! He vowed he would never leave your side. How could he do this?!”

            Soma grabbed him from the other side. “Don’t cry, Ciel! ‘Cos we’ll always be together, okay? Forever and ever!”

            “Both he and I are truly fortunate to have people who care so much for us so much,” said Ciel. “Come, let’s return to the house.”

            The group turned from the grave, huddled in a group of black.

            Then the bell rang.

            (Y/N) smirked but let Finny be the one to turn in curiosity.

            “The bell on the headstone is ringing…?” Finny blinked. “But there’s not even a breeze.”

            “Oh, dear. Oh, dear.” Undertaker chuckled. “Is this really any time to be cooling your heels? That bell ringing, why…it means he’s still alive.”

            “Dig it up!” cried Agni, Finny, and Baldroy. They ran forward with the shovels they had just buried Sebastian in. Finny ripped open the coffin, and Sebastian sat up.

            “Goodness,” he remarked. “I finally managed to get out of that. Everyone al—Eh?”

            While (Y/N) grinned, Mey-Rin, Finny, Baldroy, and Elizabeth tackled Sebastian in a hug. They wailed and cried their thanks and worry over him as they refused to let him get out of their hold.

            “Everyone, please calm yourselves,” sighed Sebastian, unable to escape the affection.

            “Glad we went with a safety coffin!” chirped Undertaker.

            “How lucky,” said (Y/N) brightly.

            “This is a miracle!” cried Agni, crying in joy. “Oh, gods! I thank you!”

            “Whew,” sighed Sebastian after he extricated him from the group and left them to cry for joy against each other. “What a relief to have fooled them with that level of shock tactic.” He glanced at (Y/N). “Though I believe you intended for me to be attacked.”

            “With hugs? Oh, absolutely,” said (Y/N) brightly. “It was entertaining.”

            “Sebastian.” Tanaka walked up to Sebastian. “I return this to you.” He pinned the butler emblem onto Sebastian’s tailcoat. “This is the proof that you are the butler to the Earl of Phantomhive. And right now, it belongs on your chest alone.” He smiled before turning away. “The butler of the Phantomhive family is not permitted to pass away before his master does. Remember that!”

            “And so, Sebastian, from this day forth, you are my butler once more,” said Ciel.

            Sebastian knelt and put a hand to his chest. ((Y/N) decided that although they had liked Sebastian leaning over them, him on his knees was nice) “Yes, my Lord. I shall devote myself wholly to serving you until the day when lies become truth comes to pass.” He smirked before standing. He paused and called to Elizabeth, “Oh, yes, Lady Elizabeth. Excuse me for my impertinence, but please allow me to correct you on one small matter.”

            Elizabeth blinked. “Did I say something?”

            Sebastian winked and put a finger to his lip. “I never tell lies.”

            (Y/N) grinned. Sebastian was well and truly back.

            “So, Snake is getting along with everyone,” said (Y/N). “What a relief after all that hard work.”

            “If I recall, I was the one who had to die,” said Sebastian in amusement. He sighed dramatically. “And you shed hardly a tear for me.”

            “Well, you weren’t dead,” said (Y/N), rolling their eyes. They smirked. “What a pity for Earl Grey when he finds out.”

            “Yes, I imagine he’ll be frustrated,” said Sebastian. He rather enjoyed the idea.

            “After causing you all that trouble, he deserves it,” said (Y/N). “He was quite brutal with you.”

            “And yet it still didn’t cause any grief in you,” sighed Sebastian.

            “Again, you weren’t dead,” chided (Y/N). “And you can handle a bit of pain.”

            “No sympathy?” Sebastian tilted his head and smirked. “You truly are a heartless demon.”

            “Who taught me to be that?” said (Y/N). They sighed. “But if you insist upon me humoring you, then yes, I wouldn’t be pleased if you died.” They glanced at him. “You’re my only friend, after all.”

            Sebastian paused, not anticipating the honesty. “You wouldn’t be pleased?”

            “Sebastian, you know I wouldn’t,” said (Y/N). They loved him. To lose him would be unthinkable. “I mean, I didn’t like seeing you in a coffin. Demons like us don’t deserve to be placed in little boxes.”

            “You didn’t enjoy your time in a coffin? Not ornate enough for someone like you?” said Sebastian with a smirk.

            “I didn’t go in a coffin,” said (Y/N). “Remember? I burned to death.”

            “Occasionally the humans still bury burned bodies, if I recall correctly,” said Sebastian.

            “Oh, they made sure there was nothing left of me,” said (Y/N). Their gaze was far away for a moment, and Sebastian realized he had touched too far. They snapped out of it and smiled at him. “Anyways, better not to be stuck in a coffin. Who else would torment humans if I’m not here?” They turned away and walked to their chores, clearly not looking to speak more.

            Sebastian watched them go. What was their human life? And what humans should I tear apart for daring to harm my love?

Concord Theatricals Recordings will release a live album of My Favorite Things: The Rodgers and Hammerstein 80th Anniversary Concert, which played London's Theatre Royal Drury Lane last year.

The album releases May 31st on streaming and CD and features 42 tracks (the full tracklist is in the article).

🦇 Writer and barista Emily Hung is tired of hearing about the great Mark Chan, the son of her parents’ friends. You’d think he single-handedly stopped climate change and ended child poverty from the way her mother raves about him. But in reality, he’s just a boring, sweater-vest-wearing engineer, and when they’re forced together at Emily’s sister’s wedding, it’s obvious he thinks he’s too good for her. But now that Emily is her family’s last single daughter, her mother is fixated on getting her married and she has her sights on Mark. There’s only one solution: convince Mark to be in a fake relationship with her long enough to put an end to her mom’s meddling. He reluctantly agrees. With each fake date, though, Emily realizes that Mark’s not quite what she assumed and maybe that argyle sweater isn’t so ugly after all.

hello hello! audiobook reading persists into this week and for the forseeable future. basically any time that i have the bandwidth to be reading a physical book with my eyes i think "oh i should be working on my thesis" so audiobooks are what is keeping me from just sinking into a pile of work and never emerging

Bloom Into You, Vol. 4-5 by Nakatani Nio, translated by Jenny McKeon this manga continues to rule, giving me my cute romance fix

Ancillary Sword by Ann Leckie, narrated by Adjoa Andoh i'm liking that while this is like the sequel to Ancillary Justice, this was a pretty self contained story. Breq i love you. love the further exploration of ancillary-ship and imperialism and had a good chat with a friend about similarities to elements of Murderbot (we looked up publishing dates so if there was any inspiration taken, Imperial Radch came first)

Squire written by Nadia Shammas and Sara Alfageeh, art by Sara Alfageeh i felt a little undersold on the friendships the protagonist made in this, but the art was amazing the whole way through

Survivor Injustice: State-Sanctioned Abuse, Domestic Violence, and the Fight for Bodily Autonomy by Kylie Cheung, narrated by Dana Wing Lau a weird thing that's happened since i've dedicated my research brain to sexual violence is that any book written with an even slightly wider audience in mind very quickly becomes a bit tedious bc I've read all of this before. however i do think the portions of this that are about domestic violence and controlling how people vote, and the prevelance of sexual violence across all political parties in the US was the most worth the read part of this book for me

The Wicked + The Divine, Vol. 2: Fandemonium written by Kieron Gillen, art by Jamie McKelvie holy shit?? excited to read the next volume (tho i think i'm going to switch the the Big volumes that collect 10 issues at a time insted of the ones with 5-6)

Last Night at the Telegraph Club by Malinda Lo, narrated by Emily Woo Zeller really excellent YA lesbian historical fiction/romance set in Red Scare era san francisco chinatown. really nicely balances the protagonist finding herself, finding community, and finding love, with a realistic depiction of what life was like for a young lesbian during an intensely homophobic era

Rethinking Rape by Ann J. Cahill reading for my thesis! my undergrad college gets a shout out in the acknowledgements

Most Ardently by Gabe Cole Novoa, narrated by Harrison Knights ya romance remix of pride and prejudice where "Elizabeth" is actually a trans boy, Oliver Bennet. i think it's sweet but i have one issue with the book generally and one issue with the narrator. first, since i'm familiar with pride and prejudice and have read/watched a few different adaptations at this point, i'm finding the pacing of this book a bit odd. like the disastrous darcy proposal happens 75% of the way through instead of closer to the middle. this throws me off because it means there's gonna be less time afterward to build toward Oliver and Darcy actually understanding each other than i think they deserve. my issue with the audiobook is that Knights has some very distinct character voices, and yet sometimes reads lines with the wrong voice, and no one at the publisher noticed? you can't read one of Jane's lines with the lispy voice you gave Lydia and not expect me to be completely thrown out of the book. however, i do like hidden identity stuff, so the parts of the book where Oliver knows Darcy both as himself Oliver and when he is closeted/girlmoding as Elizabeth is like catnip to me up to a certain point

Unfortunately, lying isn’t enough. Family friends keep popping up at their supposed dates—including a bubble tea shop and cake-decorating class—so they’ll have to spend more time together to make their relationship look real. Review:

A writer with a meddling matchmaking mother insists she has found the perfect guy for her... so she decides to fake date him to get her mom off her back... except she might actually be falling for him. Emily Hung is a writer and a barista, she's chasing her dreams and just trying to get by. She isn't the daughter her parents hoped for and her mother is convinced that if she has a husband/boyfriend, she'll be perfect. Her mother is obsessed with getting Emily to date Mark Chan, the son of her parents's friends who is just so perfect. Emily just wants her mother to stop matchmaking her... so what better way than to get Mark to agree to fake date her after their very awkward first to meet ups. Mark surprisingly agrees, but with Emily's mother watching and having eyes everywhere to see all their dates... Emily and Mark have to actually go on the dates as proof. Yet the more time they spend together, the more Emily is beginning to realize that Mark might actually be the perfect guy (much as she hates to admit that her mother was right). Yet with Emily's family drama, a relationship that started out fake but is beginning to feel very real, and a book to be written, she's got her hands full and something might break. This was an overall pretty cute read. It's an easy read and the drama is fine, I think if you are looking for an easy contemporary romance read, this is for you. Mark is a sweet romance lead, I just was hoping for a bit more from their relationship, and I kinda wish Mark had more depth. Overall, it's a cute and fine read!
