A Review of ‘Lionheart’ directed by and starring Genevieve Nnaji, produced by Chinny Onwugbenu, screenplay by Emil B. Garuba and C. J. Obasi

Lionheart is a movie set in Nigeria which tells a story about a woman trying to prove her worth as a leader to her father, who has to step down as the leader of a transportation company called ‘Lionheart’ due to health issues, and she’s determined to show her father and everyone around her that she’s more than capable of taking on her father’s position. If you haven’t already I highly recommend watching this movie on Netflix because it’s such an amazing movie! It’s a brilliant movie for many reasons. Firstly, I love how the movie narrate’s the main character Adaeze’s story, which shouldn’t be too surprising since the director plays Adaeze. When watching the movie I had no idea the actress who plays Adaeze also directs this movie, and now I love it even more! As a woman of Eastern background and culture, I definitely understood Adaeze’s struggle and determination. She represents the hard-working, devoted, and intelligent girls who make society oddly uncomfortable, and I admire the movie for this. I love the scenes when characters of different ethnic background came together, I imagine these interactions would mean a great deal for someone who knows about the history of internal conflict in Nigeria. That scene towards the end of Adaeze’s father who’s Igbo coming together with Lionheart’s competition which is a company represented by a Yoruba man was a touching scene. Not in a corny that came off as forceful, just in a sweet and thoughtful moment.

This movie was in in media’s spotlight after being disqualified from the Oscars 2020 nomination pick for the Best International Film category. The reason why this film was disqualified is because of the film’s English dialogue, which is completely outrageous. The fact that the Oscars choose to be this oblivious in trying to understand how and why Nigerians speak English in Nigeria is insane. But that’s a rant for another post! 10/10! This movie deserves all the praise and attention, for bringing to light a touching story that many hard-working women who are not white can relate to, and for its execution from the directing, production, to casting.

Lionheart premiered at the 2018 Toronto International Film Festival in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. The movie was Nnaji's directorial debut[5] as well as Peter Okoye's acting debut. The film was released worldwide on 4 January 2019, by Netflix.

Running a company can be challenging, especially if you are a female in a male-dominated industry. Looking to prove her worth, Adaeze steps up to the challenge when her father, Chief Ernest Obiagu is forced to take a step back due to health issues. Ironically, he appoints his crude and eccentric brother, Godswill, instead to run the company with his young daughter. Complications arise when they discover that the family business is in dire financial straits and both Adaeze and Godswill try to save the company in their own way to crazy and often hilarious results.
