ooooh a Trevelyan solasmancer, so rare 👀 I wanna know more!! (that hawke x dumas too ??)
emerence (and, by extension, the emerence x solas in general) is everything to me, oh my god. i've always been a really big into solas x trevelyan, but i've finally taken the plunge and made a trevelyan of my own to get close to our favorite disaster elf. she's the most andrastian — eldest daughter, chose the path of a templar rather than remaining her father's heir, very very dutiful almost to the point of blindness. she's in her mid-40s during inquisition and manages the role of herald and inquisitor with an elegance and gravitas that drives solas absolutely insane. she frustrates him to the point of distraction, but when he looks at her for a moment too long, he gets lost in the thought of her.
and yes, yes, anais!! she's one of my oldest hawkes, truthfully, and i've always been absolutely obsessed with her dynamic with dumar, considering she's a blood mage and an openly practicing one, at that. she saves his son and pulls herself into his atmosphere in hopes of vertical growth for herself and her family. she fully does not expect to fall in love with him, but alas, some stories just turn out to be love stories, as well as tragedies. 🤷‍️

Dragon Age Question Meme
Tagged by @galadrieljones - thanks lethallan!  This is a long one - I’ll continue it under a cut.
Tagging forward to @schoute @viktuuri-fluff-saved-my-life @thevikingwoman @buttsonthebeach @charlatron @mrscullensrutherford @oops-gingermoment @iarollane @aban-asaara @irlaimsaaralath @wardsarefunctioning and anyone else who wants to play!
01) Favourite game of the series?
I haven’t played Origins yet, but between DA2 and DA:I, Inquisition is my jam! I’ve played it 3 times already and I’m not yet tired of it! So many places to explore, and I still haven’t heard all the banter yet, and the lore is just so rich, so many codex entries, yes yes.
02) How did you discover Dragon Age?
Basically all my Horizon Zero Dawn friends insisted - INSISTED - that I play Inquisition. For some reason I thought I wouldn’t like it, like “ahh everyone says it’s so great, how great can it be.” WELP LOL. I have no regrets, but my HZD friends might, given how HORRIBLY OBSESSED I have become LOL.
03) How many times you’ve played the games?
- Origins: 0 times, but looking to rectify that this year! - DA2: 1.5 times. Ughhh Act 2... - DA:I: 3.5 times and still loving it!
04) Favourite race to play as?
Elf. Hands down. I played a Trevelyan once and was like MEH BORING.
05) Favourite class?
MAGE. MAGE MAGE MAGE. Although I’ve been playing as Fenris a lot in DA2 and it’s surprisingly fun!! Good thing too since I’ll have to be a two-handed warrior during my Fenquisition playthrough
06) Do you play through the games differently or do you make the same decisions each time?
I’ll answer for Inquisition. There are some things I always do the same (e.g. Bull saving the Chargers, allying with Abelas, making Solas APPROVE OF ME LMAO), but other things I alternate. I’ve gone with the mages and the Templars twice, respectively; I prefer picking the mages, it just makes more sense and is more “ethical” to me, but I ADORE COLE and I think the whole envy demon storyline is very interesting, so I quite enjoy siding with the Templars too. I have done something different each time at the Winter Palace, and this time I plan to do something different yet again. I strongly prefer Cole as a spirit, but I’ve had him as a spirit and as human twice each.
My Fenris-as-Inquisitor playthrough will be interesting. I’ll be playing in character as him, so it’s going to be quite different than what I canonically do, and I’m quite interested to see what happens. Solas is going to hate me oh god
07) Go-to adventuring group?
- DA2: FENRIS and Anders, and then I alternate my rogues. I love both Varric and Isabela, but depending on how far into my Fenris romance I am, I often have to leave Isabela behind because I HATE WATCHING HER FLIRT WITH MY MAN <sobbing> - Inquisition: SOLAS, Cole and Blackwall is my favourite group, but I also love bringing Cass instead of Blackwall - I love Cass and Cole’s banter. But Solas and Cole are my FAVOURITE PAIRING. I could listen to their incomprehensible chatter forever.
08) Which of your characters did you put the most thought into?
Damn. Umm... I put equal amounts of thought into Elia Lavellan (romanced with Solas), Athera Lavellan (romanced Abelas) and Rynne Hawke (romanced with Fenris). Before I started writing those ships, the question I had to answer was this: Why would Solas/Fenris/Abelas love her? I know why Elia loves Solas, and I know why Rynne loves Hawke and why Athera admires and eventually loves Abelas. But what is it about those OCs that those men fall in love with? I build my OCs around the men in their lives, not the other way around.
09) Favourite romance?
URGH WHY MUST YOU ASK ME THIS. GOD FINE. Fenris rivalmance, ok?? But I also love the Solasmance and the Blackwall romance to the point of swooning so just FUCK RIGHT OFF WITH THIS QUESTION THXBAI~
10) have you read any of the comics/books?.
Yes! Masked Empire and Asunder.
11) if you read them, which was your favorite book?
Masked Empire. I really liked getting more background on Celene/Briala and Gaspard (i.e. WHY THE FUCK I SHOULD GIVE A SHIT ABOUT THE WINTER PALACE MISSION AT ALL). I loved Felassan and Briala’s dalen/hahren relationship. And it was just better written than Asunder.
12) Favorite DLCs?
Must agree with Gala here; Trespasser is bae, and Jaws of Hakkon is just beautiful (and also AMERIDAN <sob>). But I also liked Mark of the Assassin quite a bit! So amusing!
13) Things that annoy you.
The fact that it takes a MILLION YEARS to get banter in DA:I, and also that you can’t just click on your companions in DA:I whenever you like if you just want to hear their voice. I KNOW I’M NOT THE ONLY ONE WHO CLICKED ON FENRIS CONSTANTLY TO HEAR HIM SAY “I enjoy following you”, OKAY? LIKE ALL I WANT IS FOR SOLAS  TO SAY “vhenan” TO ME WHILE WE’RE WANDERING THROUGH THE BLOODY WESTERN APPROACH
14) Orlais or Ferelden?
Ferelden? We seem to spend more time there. But I’m kind of neutral I guess.
15) Templars or mages?
Mages. Hands down. Sorry Templars.
16) if you have multiple characters, are they in different/parallel universes or in the same one?
All parallel universes. None of them coexist. Rynne Hawke doesn’t even coexist with any of my Lavellans because Fenris becomes the Inquisitor in my headcanon
17) What did you name your pets? (mabari, summoned animals, mounts, etc)
I have only one pet, Hawke’s mabari, and his name is Toby.
18) have you installed any mods?
Console only <sob>
19) Did your Warden want to become a Grey Warden?
n/a - haven’t played Origins yet!
20) Hawke’s personality?
PURPLE HAWKE, with a healthy dash of Isabela-level flirtiness. But Rynne (over?)uses humour to deflect pain and agitation and anger.
21) did you make matching armour for your companions in Inquisition?
...Maybe.
HAHAH so I made matching colour armour for Elia and Solas, yes. And I generally like to dress both Cole and myself in black and red!
22) if your character(s) could go back in time to change one thing, what would they change?
Ohhhh.... fuck. This is tough. - Elia Lavellan (romanced Solas): ...surprisingly, nothing really. She’s got a pretty zen kind of ‘what will be, will be’ attitude. In her darkest moments she might regret falling for Solas, but overall, she doesn’t really regret anything. - Arya Lavellan (romanced Blackwall): nothing. She is very confident.  - Athera Lavellan (romanced Abelas): honestly, she questions half of her decisions half the time. After Trespasser, she regrets not dissolving the Inquisition. (I haven’t decided yet if she eventually does dissolve it after all; perhaps we’ll see what DA4 brings us).  - Rynne Hawke (romanced Fenris): a LOT of things. She regrets letting Bethany attack that ogre. She regrets not bringing Carver to the Deep Roads, because maybe then he wouldn’t have joined the Templars to spite her. She regrets not following up more closely on Emeric’s murder investigation because otherwise maybe her mother wouldn’t have died. She basically blames herself anytime anything bad happens with her family (including the Merry Band of Misfits).
23) Do you have any headcanons about your character(s) that go against canon?
I actually quite enjoy sticking to canon for the most part, and expanding on facts that we already know. The one canon-ish(?) thing I don’t love is the idea of Dalish Inquisitors understanding or speaking a dialect of Elvhen that’s mutually intelligible with the dialect that Solas and Abelas speak. I let it slide in my Solavellan fics, but I mean, it’s been THOUSANDS OF YEARS between Arlathan and the Dragon Age. Dalish Elvhen (even if they have many many dialects, which is most certainly the case) is very unlikely to be mutually intelligible with ancient Elvhen. I’ve been meaning to write a full post about this for like a year oops
24) Are any of your character(s) based on someone?
They all contain some elements of self-insert, so... me, I guess? XD
25) Who did you leave in the Fade?
The first time I played Inquisition, I had not played DA2 yet, so I left Hawke in the Fade for LOGIC REASONS OK - Stroud was like the only senior Warden left, I thought they needed him! I’ve left Stroud there every time thereafter.
26) Favourite mount?
Well, it WOULD be any and all the harts, except for that FUCKING HORRENDOUS SOUND THEY MAKE. I thus prefer to ride dracolisks for the Coolness Factor™.

#complete and total agreement#let us blow up the chantry#anders’s incandescent rage is completely justified#and i still marvel at the dai writers saying your trevelyan mage liked their circle when its clear no circle is free of abuse#the system itself cannot allow it#and the templars being hooked on lyrium (i recall cassandra phrasing it as a ‘lyrium leash’ which is so terribly fitting)#means they MUST propegate the chantry’s rhetoric#either via deed or word#and templars are placed in a position where they personally benefit from active participation#and questioning as we see especially in DA2 leads to almost immediate consequences#most of them not even remotely above board disciplinary actions!#its abuse piled on abuse and painted as justice and peace#and like op said: orlesian chantry and nobility profits#even just looking at the starting approval score at halamshiral tells you all you need to know#even a noble trevelyan loses points for being a mage. automatically.#the only way to fix southern thedas is to scorched earth the chantry and its supporters and salt the earth afterwards (tags via @creativegoblin)
Correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe with Trevelyan you can also say you hated the Circle, right? I've never actually played them, but I assume it's like how as Lavellan you can decide whether or not your Quiz enjoys the Dalish lifestyle. In that context I'd say it's the same as how people say Kinloch Hold was "good" or Vivienne describing the Circle as "good"; it was "good" only in comparison to other, worse lives you could be living, because you were lucky enough to not catch the ire of any particularly violent or otherwise dangerous Templars rather than because it was actually a good life. I believe you can also say that your parents basically bribed the Templars to keep their hands off you, which sounds... much more in line with the Circles we see in the first two games than anything in DAI. Also once again shows us that this whole system only supports the nobility; your parents loved you, and were rich enough that they could afford to bribe the Templars for decent treatment and days out. What about everyone else?
And yeah, the way that the Templars work means any steps out of line are incredibly dangerous for them, because the lyrium addiction is devastating if you try to quit it. If a Templar like Thrask or Emeric were to try to defend mages from their superiors, the Chantry is liable to kick them to the curb for daring to speak up and then they're pretty much screwed. Look at Samson, left scrounging for cash on the streets because he sent a couple letters for a mage. If you're a halfway decent person in the Templars but not willing to sacrifice everything up to and including your life, you're... kind of stuck. Very stuck, when you consider that if you stay addicted to lyrium it'll eventually destroy your mind; being a Templar is very much a "damned if you do, damned if you don't" situation. A lot of them are scum, true, but it's still a pretty bad hand to be dealt! Especially for the ones like Alistair who weren't given a choice in the matter.
Actually, speaking of Samson. The "both sides" nonsense DAI tries to pull doesn't work at all, but you know what might have worked? Switching Samson and Cullen's roles and setting DAI up as a story about how badly the Chantry screwed over everyone under its watch. Cullen still holds to Chantry views to the point where he starts telling you to break your newly formed alliance just because he doesn't like mages and wants you to put an expansionist on the Orlesian throne to benefit Orlais; sure, the lyrium addiction plot is sad and he grumbles about having to deal with Chantry politics, but he's otherwise so firmly on the side of the Chantry that it hurts. Samson, meanwhile, is painfully aware of how badly the Chantry screws over both mages and Templars; he lost his job over sending a letter! Maddox was made Tranquil for it! Having Samson as the commander could easily have given us an advisor who was against helping the Chantry entirely, which would've been a better option for a lot of people than Cullen's general opinions. If nothing else he'd do a much better job of portraying the "Templars are victims too :(" thing that Bioware clearly wants us to take away from Inquisition, because... he was a victim. And he became a victim the moment he dared to treat a mage as a person who he wanted to help. Cullen, meanwhile, has (other than the lyrium thing) done nothing but benefit from the Chantry's system; the setup for his presence in DA2 was that his hatred of magic was deemed a better fit for the Gallows than Kinloch Hold, so they gave him a promotion and moved him into a position where he would be allowed to take his hatred of mages out on people who couldn't fight back! The suggestion that the Chantry treats their soldiers poorly rings a little hollow when the face of it is the guy who just keeps getting kicked further and further upstairs into positions where he can do more and more damage to mages; it wouldn't ring hollow if the face of it was the guy who lost everything because he did something nice for a mage just once and is also painfully aware of how dependant they made him on what they could give him. Meanwhile Cullen as Corypheus's right-hand man makes a lot more sense than Samson, given that Cullen was right next to the red lyrium idol for years and Samson was nowhere near it. Plus it also shows that the Chantry isn't actually better than its supposed enemies, just awful in a slightly different way; serving Corypheus and taking the red lyrium power boost that comes with that is a natural next step for someone who willingly served Meredith and only switched sides when it looked like they might not be able to handle the consequences, after all. Also, Samson was out of the Chantry for long enough that they could've said he'd already kicked his lyrium addiction, which would avoid the really uncomfortable part of the game where you either tell Cullen to keep taking lyrium which ultimately leads to his death or he quits cold turkey in the middle of a serious conflict in which he is the commander of your forces and so he really needs to be at his best and there isn't even an option to suggest he stop taking it once Corypheus is dealt with and he no longer needs to be in top form! Which... you know, would be nice.
And yeah, while I do mostly enjoy WEaWH (intrigue! Dancing! The ability to watch the empress of Orlais get stabbed and then put a puppet king controlled by an elf on the throne and then later judge the dead body of her killer! Yay!) the fact that literally the first thing any non-human noble Inquisitor gets is slapped in the face by Orlesian high society's hatred of anyone who isn't human nobility is like... well, that was certainly a decision that Bioware made! It was certainly a choice to have that be our introduction to the people we're supposed to be helping!
Sometimes I remember that if you play Surana or Amell in Origins the origin (hehe) of the conflict that ultimately leads to the death of the Archdemon is... the First Enchanter of one of the most "liberally run" Circles in southern Thedas leaving out a bunch of books on blood magic with the explicit hope that young apprentices will pick them up and become blood mages so that they can be handed over to the Templars as maleficars. With your best friend falling for this trick explicitly because he's terrified that the Circle is going to magically lobotomize him against his will just because he's not particularly good at magic so he feels his only hope is to run away whatever the cost. That's the starting point for your character. And again, Kinloch Hold is supposed to be one of the most liberally run Circles. This is one of the good Circles. And then in Awakening we learn that Anders was kept in solitary confinement for a year just because he wanted to live outside the Circle, and you can comment that he's lucky they didn't just kill him outright. And I know I've said this twice already this post, but this is supposed to be a good Circle. This is nice. The mages at places like the Gallows would probably kill to be at Kinloch Hold. And your introduction to it is first you, a young adult (or possibly in your late teens; you are mentioned to be young for a Harrowing, and Harrowings generally seem to be done when the mage is quite young to begin with), being thrown to demons without warning as a standard test, and then when you wake up you learn that your best and possibly only friend is likely to be magically lobotomized for not being great at magic unless you help him escape. And between those things and during the latter you'll hear about fun things like apprentices disappearing into thin air (with no one questioning it because it's that normal) and the Templars watching the female apprentices bathe! And when you return it's to find out that when things went tits up the Templars, who are supposedly there for your protection, locked every surviving mage in Kinloch Hold in the demon infested part of the tower and are waiting for permission to murder everyone inside down to the youngest child. Ten bucks says that the Templars also in there would've been allowed to live.
I think it hits a lot harder just because you don't learn that Kinloch Hold is considered a liberal Circle until after it leaves the series, apparently for good, with the Templars planning to hang out outside the door until they get legal cover for murdering everyone inside. Like, you see all that and then after that you learn that that? That was the best a Circle mage could hope for. Just a few life-threatening tests you're not allowed to prepare for. Just a bit of entrapment by the person who's supposed to stand between you and the Templars. Only rumours that the Templars will watch you while you bathe rather than confirmed fact. And only a small chance that they'll murder you the moment they're given the opportunity. That's a good life for a Circle mage.
And then in DAI they genuinely expected us to buy that actually the Circles weren't that bad and the Circle mages are just so whiny for not knowing how to survive outside the cage they've been trapped in their whole lives and also wanting to kill a lot of their jailors. It's like the writers forgot that we've seen that even the best the Circles offered was still absolutely fucking horrific. And that that was a lot of players' first introduction to the series.

She tries to find anything good to those she meets. Why Someone Might Hate Them: She has made a few questionable decisions during missions. Her tendency to offer redemption to others is not always liked. How They Change: It becomes harder to get her to talk about what’s going on in her head. The war took a toll on her, and she progressively closes more. Liara and Xavia have to give her space and let her decide when she’s ready to talk. Why You Love Them: She’s my first Mass Effect OC and I just love her so much ;-; She wants everyone to be safe, to the point where she endangers herself to make sure that the others make it.
That took me like an hour, wow x) It was great though, thanks!!

@ridethebull
Emer Trevelyan let out a soft sigh as she stepped off the train, making sure to leave a large gap between herself and a young, blond elf and his rather enthusiastic human mentor. The train ride had been agonisingly long, little twelve year old Joshua and his mentor had spent the whole time chatting about the most inane things. It had done nothing but sour the older girl’s mood. Foolish child, it was almost like he didn’t realise that they were raising him as a lamb to slaughter? Still, everyone had felt sorry for the young child who had been selected on the day of his twelfth birthday.
Everyone seemed to hope that he would beat the odds and win.
Of course, that had meant that she had gone unnoticed. No one cared about the broody, older competitor who had stayed in the background with a disgusted look on her face. Her own mentor had decided to wait until she’d gotten to the Capitol, as if it weren’t already obvious that she was unimportant, another tribute to be slain for the amusement of others.
"So...where is he?”
Tumblr media
The dark haired girl female crossed her arms, waiting to be approached by her mentor. It was their job to make sure that she could at least die in an interesting manner, right? There was no way in hell she was going to be the one to approach with that in mind.

3, 4 & 9 for the Trevelyans!
3: What outfit or style of clothing is your character most often seen wearing?
Emeria is really fond her Trevelyan riding garb, which manages to be a bit practical as well as ceremonious at the same time. It basically includes a blouse of her house color (which I imagine is a deep, rich eggplant purple, very royal) with billowing sleeves that gather at the wrist into an ornate cuff, an embossed leather bodice/vest, riding pants, and tall, light brown leather boots. Otherwise, she tends to wear much of the same; flowy blouses, tall embossed boots,
Emeric is used to wearing whatever was expected of him as a noble, whether it be appropriate for holding an audience with guests, going to the Chantry or holding a ceremony, but once he’s in the Inquisition I can see him having fun sporting more rugged, adventurer’s clothing like the Venture Forth or Venture Capital outfits in the Inquisitor’s wardrobe.
4: What would your character wear to a formal gathering such as a dance, a wedding, or a funeral?
Emeria likes dressing up but knows not to go overboard. She would opt for something understated but a bit slinky rather than overdressing. She loves jewel tones, so she plays up color over volume or accessory most of the time, opting for simple pieces that still manage to stand out.
Emeric is a bit like Emeria in this sense. He usually wears the basic nondescript uniform, like the default outfits the Inquisition sports at the Winter Palace, but he does have a weakness for flashy sashes. Emeric would be the sort of guy to wear a grey uniform but add a textured sash in emerald green or sapphire blue. He enjoys dressing up, and cleans up pretty damn well, if he says so himself, and loves adding little accents that aren’t too flashy but just unique enough to set him apart.
They’re both practical yet fashionable dressers ;)
9: Does your character have a dream job or life path for themselves?
Emeria had no direction in life before the Conclave. She was the last of the Trevelyans, and since the rest of her family had already settled into carefully arranged marriages or positions in the Chantry as scholars, sisters, or Templars, Emeria was going to inherit the Trevelyan Estate and manage the family household. She was fully expecting to live a carefree life of afternoon tea, gossip, parties, reading (she’s a fan of Varric’s work, she loves Hard in Hightown but never got into Swords and Shields), reciting poetry, watercolor painting and horseback riding (think: Emma Woodhouse). Once everything goes to shit and she becomes the Herald/Inquisitor she turns herself around and tries to better herself in every way she can, learn about the world and be people in it, become more physically capable/useful, and put what skills she has to good use.
Emeric, on the other hand, was set to be a Templar, which was expected of him as a devout Trevelyan and Adrastian, but upon seeing the rebel mages up close, hearing about Cassandra’s and Cullen’s experiences, and seeing what happened at Theirinfal Redoubt he begins to change his tune but realizes just how much needs to change for the better and that there is a lot more good he could do as part of the Inquisition than he ever could as a Templar, even despite the circumstances.

I'm so sorry, that question was meant to be a rhetorical dig at Bioware and its habit of acting like saying that the two sides are as bad as each other means that what the Templars do is okay, not you. I did not phrase that well at all.
But yeah, there were actually a lot of genuinely interesting directions Bioware could've gone with the Templars! And we have had sympathetic Templars in the past; Alistair is incredibly sympathetic and only escaped being a Templar by virtue of Duncan recruiting him! Keran suffers a great deal and if you let him stay as a Templar he will eventually leave the Order despite needing the money because he hates what Meredith is doing! Thrask genuinely thinks the Templars are good for mages (likely as a result of Chantry indoctrination) and will ultimately die trying to do right by his charges! Emeric cares enough about the mages under his "care" that he goes well out of his way to investigate the murder of one such mage (and in the process uncovers a bunch more while the Kirkwall guard sits around with their thumbs up their asses)! Templar Carver only joins the Order out of a need to provide for his family and will refuse to fight his mage sibling because he loves them and thinks that what Meredith is doing is wrong (I believe from what people have said that he's disgusted if Hawke sides with the Templars)! Samson ends up begging on the streets, being slowly killed by lyrium withdrawal, just because he did one nice thing for a mage! The Chantry does terrible things to its Templars, particularly the ones who are dragged into it as children or forced onto that path by circumstance; a lot of Templars are victims of the Chantry's actions! But they are all complicit in the Templar Order's atrocities for as long as they remain part of the Order. Some of them genuinely don't seem to have any other options, but that means that in the best case scenario they will no matter how unhappily accept being part of all that suffering if it helps them and theirs. Where Bioware really went wrong was acting like "villain" and "victim" are opposite ends of a binary, when the Templars are both. They are victims of the Chantry, and a lot of them have been backed into a corner with no good way out! But they are also all the mages' torturers and jailers. Suffering or having suffered in the past does not give you the right to make others suffer when those people have never done a thing to hurt you, and you can see through several of the characters in DAI especially (notably Cullen and Sera) that Bioware seems to have missed that.
And there's something genuinely uncomfortable in how DAI does not allow you to engage with playing an unwilling Inquisitor beyond letting you make it clear they are unwilling. This is someone being forced to play figurehead for a religion they may not even believe in and that (unless you're playing non-mage Trevelyan) actively oppresses their people! They can state explicitly and fairly regularly that they do not want to be here, but their advisors will basically threaten them into compliance by all but outright admitting that they'll just hand their "Herald" over to the Chantry to be dealt with if said Herald refuses to play ball! You could say that Quiz ultimately decides to stay because Corypheus is a pressing threat to the whole world and the Inquisition's resources will make stopping him easier... but then you start up Trespasser, and two years after Corypheus's defeat the Inquisition is still dragging itself along with Quiz still at the helm. But Bioware just doesn't do anything with that. Hey! Bioware! Less frantic retcons to make mages and elves less sympathetic, more engaging with the themes you yourselves lay out in the early game!
