Bookmark This : A Writer’s Toolbox
As each of the Emerging Voices Fellows embarks on a new beginning, and we look forward to our 2016 applicants, Oktavi Allison recalls her experience with Author Evenings, and expanding her tool box.
***
During my interview for PEN Center USA’s Emerging Voices Fellowship, we spoke about how I would like to see my work change. One of the challenges I faced was how to reshape and expand the box that I work in. After so many years of writing, I needed to sharpen my tools, and find some new ones as well. The Author Evenings proved challenging at first, but eventually fit the bill.
Most of the Author Evenings were held at the PEN Center USA office in Beverly Hills on Monday evenings. We read a new book each week––twenty-two in total––and generated a series of discussion questions for the visiting author.
Each evening began with our log lines, or brief synopsis of our projects. Loose conversations followed on publishing, author experiences, and the act of writing itself.
As I read and annotated my weekly discussion sheet, I began to track the tools that the authors gave us. I asked each author a question: “What tool would you add to our toolbox?”
The list lengthened––ranging from truth to passion to humility. Now, I look forward to the poem that will arise.
What lingers are moments throughout these months: David Ulin (author of The Lost Art of Reading), and our conversation about reading deeply; and James Ragan (author of The World Shouldering I), and our discussion about compassion and backdropping our stories.
All of my notes have been saved for now: the conclusion of the fellowship. Among them lies a treasure trove of book lists and quotes to pore over with morning coffee. I have a generous list of tools in my box, and more to come.
You could be a 2016 Emerging Voices Fellow! For more information and to apply: https://penusa.org/programs/emerging-voices.
