I finally finished DM-ing my first campaign... and here's the references to the coolest of the characters (in my opinion). Tracey Garnet, Sabbatha the Sun Witch, and Emelka Harstone. So much fun but so much work ><

Trick or treat!

🍬 Treat! Here's some information about Uneasy Money, my latest plot bunny:

It's set in the same universe as The Case-Files of Seo Yo-han. Yo-han himself doesn't appear, Phil might, and Alec and Davit definitely will. One of the protagonists is Alec's cousin.

It starts in 1919 and continues until at least 1924. I'll basically pick and choose what I want from real history, and I'll handwave the differences by pointing out it's a WW1-less alternate history.

The main inspirations are The Last Chronicle of Barset and Downton Abbey. The title is borrowed from a P. G. Wodehouse novel.

The main characters' surname is Millner. This is because I recently bought an 1870(!) edition of Alfred Lord Tennyson's poems, and it has a signature from someone named Philip Millner who owned it in 1875(!!). So I've borrowed his surname for my OCs.

There are four, possibly five main characters: Gilbert (named after Gilbert from Anne of Green Gables), his sister Helena, their brother Eric, and their cousin Helena. (Yes, there are two Helenas. Yes, this is confusing for everyone. Including me; I think I'll give one of them a nickname. I can't change one of their names because a major plot relies on no one knowing which Helena Millner is involved.) The fifth main character is Thomas, who is blackmailing one branch of the Millners.

The plot revolves around a large sum of money that was supposed to be donated to the hospital. Helena was asked to deliver it, so when it goes missing she's accused of stealing it. (The truth: the other Helena "borrowed" it to pay off Thomas. Thomas says he got the money from "Helena Millner", but doesn't say which one.)

Hmm ... How about a freshly-made treat? Please excuse any sloppiness for this excerpt I just cooked up (TWs for language, some blood, and a hint at cannibalism ... although, is it cannibalism if it's some rogue Fae creature eating your vampire crew??):

Benji’s eyes fluttered open. Something still seemed off. Leech was in a pair of dark-colored slacks and a white shirt open to the chest. Both were soaked and sticking to his frame. He’d never realized his hands and feet were webbed before, but now there seemed to be claws extending from them. But the strangest thing were the black tendrils extending from his body. They seemed to move of their own accord, as if underwater. Even his kelp-brown hair floated around him. “Oh, that was real stupid of you, Olsen,” he said. “I told you, call me Slaughter,” Slaughter Olsen said. Leech’s eyes were all-black. Blood dripped from his mouth down his shirtfront. “Glad I only sampled those men of yours,” he said. “Figured I’d need to save room for you. You stupid fuck.”

Happy STS! Are any of your characters really big procrastinators? If they are, why do they procrastinate? What names them finally start doing the Thing?

ooh this is a good question! thank you! I am a huge procrastinator, but let me think about if any of my characters are...

Fallon is not, she's freakishly organized most of the time, which is a very good thing. It would NOT be good if she as the Queen procrastinated with important things regarding her kingdom.

I imagine Theo would procrastinate anything they didn't enjoy doing or that wasn't important to them. It would be because if they don't enjoy what they're doing, it's like pulling teeth to sit down and get it done. (Yay for ADHD and autism, askdjaskd.) They only would start working on things if there was a deadline looming in their face. (Or as previously mentioned it was important to them for some other reason.)

I feel like Ashlin could also procrastinate on things they find "boring" or not fun. They're also probably more than a little ADHD, and struggle to sit down and get to work on things that they don't see the point in doing. She might start working if there's a looming deadline, but she also might just say "fuck it" and blow the thing off completely. It depends on what the task is.

Sebastian would absolutely procrastinate doing things just to piss off Heaven. He'd start doing things (begrudgingly and with much complaint) if Gabriel asked him to, though.

So far Lucian is pretty easy to write! He's very firm in his beliefs and often very predictable for me. Dialogue comes a little harder for the same reasons but other than that very easy to write!

Rowan is harder for similar reasons why Lucian is easy. They're harder for me to predict and plan out for and they introduce a lot of variables into the story.

10. Describe a photo they have saved on their phone.

Jayme has so many pictures on his phone. Squirrels, selfies, clothes, candid pictures of his friends, pictures with his friends... anything cute or pretty (like flowers)... he is a Collector. But I'd say one of his favorites is one he saved from his mom's phone that she took when he was twelve. She's hugging him close in a public garden and you can tell how much they love being together by the smiles on their faces. It's a fond memory for him.

15. Describe their computer. Is it a sticker covered laptop? A high-tech gaming computer?

This year Dell came out with a gaming laptop that's purple and I know he'd do just about anything to get it since it not only has good specs (which he needs for creating his designs) but is also his favorite color. He'd put some cute flower stickers in a couple of the corners for sure. Before this laptop he'd have one with a skin and/or lots of cute stickers on it so it's not so ugly. Takashti would take one look at his laptop and say something like "can't you own one thing without decorating it?"

20. What’s in their email inbox?

Jayme has an email for shopping site ads and social media which he never goes through so it's sort of like a drawer of junk mail he empties when it gets full. His other email is for more important emails like from his school or styling contests he's entered.

Beyond the Darkness is a loosely scifi, loosely fantasy, all heart novel by @avrablake. It's got magic and worldbuilding and fight scenes galore, but the best part about it is definitely its characters:

Thea is on the run from a Military Research facility after being horrifically experimented on. Reeling with trust issues and desperate not to get caught, she struggles with her powers and her fragile sense of self-worth. And yet, reading this girl is like watching a fawn slowly transform into a lioness.

Nix is broken. Tortured. You'll never find a poorer little meow meow and I absolutely love it. He's that grumpy, growly, scary character you just know has a heart of gold and then he DOES and it's so amazing, he even surprises himself. And he's also a war criminal. Y'know, obviously.

Gram is the kind of guy you wish would be your dad. Is that weird to say? Oh well, I said what I said. Only someone like Gram could put up with all these weirdos and love them so much anyway.

Kai is the sweetest and most supportive brother you can ever ask for. He's a rock for Thea and his presence on the page is so soothing. I swear I smile every time anything comes out of his mouth.

Lucan, Nolan, and Ryu are precious. You don't go into it expecting to love these guys and then oops they're your favorite

This book is for you if you like when a novel's biggest focus is its character arcs. Fans of hurt/comfort and found family (like an actual found family and not just an ensemble cast) will be really drawn to it. It's about healing, physically and mentally, and finding love despite your scars. And of course the powers, politics, and fight scenes are huge bonuses.

Okay I just HAD to devote the full Alibert inn scene from episode 5 here CUZ WE NEED TO TALK ABOUT YUGO GOING BACK TO EMELKA!! I know I already mentioned Chibi and Grougal (as well as the tree Tofu tower) in part 1 but part 2 will basically be about all the rest of the inn scene cuz tumblr couldn’t let me have more than ten images per post (I know the site apparently lets u have more but I always use the phone for it so shush.)

But first, we finally get to see Alibert again after all those years 💕

Alibert. Sweetie. Baby. You can take care of two (technically four) kids with the addition of a freaking INN, you COOK for the customers, AND, ON TOP OF ALL THAT, you’re the MAYOR of EMELKA, that same place where you run the inn and take care of your adopted sons.

You do much more than just “taking care of an inn”, you got three jobs AND you’re still sane. You’re three in one, a whole package, props to you king. He’s such a boss ass man I love him 💕💕

(Also is the wine a call back to Gustavio? Plz it would be so funny if the reason why Alibert is angry is cuz these ppl are saying how “bad” it is just so the prices can stay the same but also because he’s mad that they’re calling Gustavio’s wine “disgusting” even if they were all just trying to make him not raise the prices!)

Love how Yugo doesn’t say that same shit to Ruel after all those years of cooking for his ass and never getting anything from him.

Like even the whole Brotherhood calls Ruel a “cheapskate” but the only time where we see Yugo say that same shit is when he says that to his own CUSTOMERS?!?

THESE LITTLE TOFUS ARE OBVIOUSLY A SILLY PARALLEL TO THESE TWO AND NO ONE CAN TELL ME OTHERWISE.

Okay now the next part of the Alibert inn scene is very important to me so listen.

Recently, I came scrolling on @moths-are-better’s recent posts about Yugo and I came up on the one where he drinks the “milk” that was in the cup in the scene below.

But like-

@moths-are-better STOP LYING TO YOURSELF THIS IS CLEARLY WINE!!!

Look at all the other people drinking in the inn before they left: they all had that same kind of cup, insinuating that they were drinking wine (and also cuz they confirmed it was wine while trying to avoid any possible future inflations with Alibert).

I just love how Ankama deliberately shows us small scenes like this to remind us that Yugo can do adult things even though he looks like a kid. Because THIS is one of those scenes! Just look at how Alibert quietly pulls the cup of wine away from Yugo as soon as the guy starts ranting about his problems.

That’s clearly not milk lol I just love your delusions @moths-are-better 💕💕

But not only did this scene made me realize that nothing can stop Yugo from doing adult things despite how he looks, it also helped me realize that Yugo is the type to only drink when he’s having problems. We clearly see him about to drink more while ranting to Alibert before he carefully pulls the wine away from Yugo cuz he KNOWS Yugo would drink more just for that.

That level of attention to detail is amazing and I’m so glad I managed to catch up to the hints early on.

Alibert be looking like Yugo’s bartender AND therapist in just that moment alone lol

Ngl I would’ve loved to see a drunk Yugo if he had been able to drink more before Alibert intervened.

This is making me wanna have kids too man….

His caring and calming attitude towards Yugo and the way he just treats him, cares for him, and acts like a responsible parent during all these years really makes me wanna do the same thing someday. Alibert is so good at his job(s) that he’s even beating a freaking goddess. Let that sink in. (actually any good parent like Alibert would beat the Eliatrope goddess’ parenting easily lol)

Alibert is genuinely so sweet, patient, thoughtful, and understanding of Yugo. Like even though he just heard Yugo say he finally found his true family, Alibert doesn’t take his words as insults and would rather just let him spill out all of his words to him.

When I said I missed these two like this, I really meant it. This inn is not only where Yugo was raised in but it’s also Yugo’s comfort place.

My ass knows this is foreshadowing.

It just knows.

Older Yugo where u at? We need to talk.

She couldn’t tell if she was equally as excited or if she was being buoyed by their emotions; either way, she was as jittery as she’d been before her first society event at seventeen. “Remember, everyone!” Dorian shouted, calling the crew’s attention to him. He stood at the top of the steps to the upper deck. “No killing, no fighting, and no getting arrested! No stealing, no matter how annoying the merchant is.” At this, he pointed to Jakub, which earned a laugh. “And if you engage the services of any of the lovely prostitutes who work in the city, what’s the rule?” The crew spoke as one. “Tip well.” “Excellent. I don’t want any of you sullying our perfect reputation around here,” he said. “Have fun, and if you’re not back by tomorrow’s sunrise you’re getting left here.”

Red (Chapter 4)

Runnicka woke but she didn’t open her eyes. She lay on a wooden surface and her whole body ached, especially her head. How long had she been laying there? It was night last she remembered but the sun shone red through her eyelids.

Orange (Chapter 6)

Runnicka picked up the dagger. Holding the blade in front of her face, she said, “Torok.” Orange flame sparked up from the blade.

Yellow (Chapter 9)

Runnicka followed the carved mossy stairs down to the river. The slow moving water made little sound, drowned out by the wind rustling through the branches above. It was late morning; Runnicka couldn’t be expected to show up any sooner than that. Yellow rays of the sun trickled down to the water’s surface, making it sparkle like gems.

Green (Chapter 2)

Three days and nights of avoiding human towns passed before they reached the Green River, their quarter-way point to Wistil.

Blue (Chapter 8)

They entered a candle-lit room with a short table and several blue cushions on the floor. Runnicka sat across the table from the Feio, admiring the room. Raekisho Feio had never had so many candles and cushions in his counsel room. The poverty of her beloved home became more evident the more she learned about Rossa.

Indigo

Violet

Purple (because I don't have Indigo or Violet) (Chapter 5)

When Farenna woke her in the morning, her leg had not improved. It had gotten worse. Her muscle was cramped, the bruise was dark purple, and the welt had swollen to twice its size.

Purple again (Chapter 5)

He turned to face her. Veins bulged in his forehead and his face was still reddish-purple. He matched her expression, projecting the same intensity of hatred that Runnicka felt for him.
